Abstract
Gold-catalysed intramolecular reaction of unprotected/protected 3-dienyl indoles leads to the formation of functionalised terphenylamines with high efficiency; this reaction can also be accomplished in one pot by starting with 2-arylindole and propargylic alcohols. This reaction occurs via 3-dienyl indoles and proceeds likely by gold-catalysed cascade cyclisation, aromatisation and fragmentation of the indole heterocyclic moiety. We have also found that PTSA can work well giving comparable yields, but at least one mole equivalent of PTSA is required. On the other hand, 3-indenylindoles have been synthesised from indole-2-carboxylates (2-carboxyindoles) and propargylic alcohols through Brønsted acid mediation. Many of these indenylindoles exhibit isomerism (probably diastereomers) in the solution state (1H NMR). Two examples of indolo-indenyl acetates have been prepared by reacting the above terphenylanilines with PhI(OAc)2. Key products are characterised by X-ray crystallography.

Abstract
Initial rate studies have revealed dramatic acceleration in aerobic Pd(II)-catalyzed C-H olefination reactions of phenylacetic acids when mono-N-protected amino acids are used as ligands. In light of these findings, systematic ligand tuning was undertaken, which has resulted in drastic improvements in substrate scope, reaction rate, and catalyst turnover. We present evidence from intermolecular competition studies and kinetic isotope effect experiments that implies that the observed rate increases are a result of acceleration in the C-H cleavage step. Furthermore, these studies suggest that the origin of this phenomenon is a change in the mechanism of C-H cleavage from electrophilic palladation to proton abstraction.

Abstract
Oxidative annulations for the synthesis of carbocycles were developed using a catalytic palladium(II) system. Indoles with pendant olefin tethers were oxidatively cyclized to form annulated products. Electron-rich aromatic systems were also investigated, culminating in the synthesis of benzofurans and dihydrobenzofurans by a similar protocol. These reactions were demonstrated to proceed by an initial C-H bond functionalization event, followed by olefin insertion and β-hydride elimination.

Abstract
Direct synthesis of 2-substituted 5-oxazolecarbaldehydes was performed by intramolecular reaction of propargylamides through treatment with a catalytic amount of Pd(II) salts in the presence of a stoichiometric amount of reoxidant agent. The heterocyclization process was well-tolerated by a wide range of aryl, heteroaryl, and alkyl propargylamides. This protocol constitutes a valuable synthetic pathway to 5-oxazolecarbaldehydes, alternative to the formylation on oxazole rings, often unsatisfactory in term of regioselectivity and yields.

Abstract
During the last two decades there has been considerable growth in the development of catalytic reactions capable of activating unreactive C-H bonds. These methods allow for the synthesis of complex molecules from easily available and cheaper precursors in a fewer number of steps. Naturally, the development of C-H activation methods for direct functionalization of heterocyclic molecules, invaluable building blocks for pharmaceutical and synthetic chemistry and material science, has received substantial attention as well. This critical review summarizes the progress made in this field until November 2006 (117 references).

Abstract
Indoles react intramolecularly with alkynes in the presence of gold catalysts to give from six- to eight-membered-ring annulated compounds. The cationic Au(I) complex [Au(P{C(6)H(4)(o-Ph)}(tBu)(2))(NCMe)]SbF(6) is the best catalyst for the formation of six- and seven-membered rings by 6-endo-dig, 6-exo-dig, and 7-exo-dig cyclizations. Indoloazocines are selectively obtained with AuCl(3) as catalyst in a rare 8-endo-dig process. In this process allenes or tetracyclic annulated derivatives are also formed as a result of an initial fragmentation reaction. The intermolecular reaction of indoles with alkynes proceeds to form 3-alkenylated intermediates that react with a second equivalent of indole to give bisindolyl derivatives. Indoles that are substituted at the 3-position react intermolecularly with alkynes to give 2-alkenylated intermediates that can be trapped intramolecularly with the appropriate nucleophiles.

Abstract
New functionalizations of indoles via palladium-catalyzed reaction of indoles and 2-acetoxymethyl-substituted electron-deficient alkenes are reported. It was found that for N-protected indoles the reaction proceeded smoothly in the presence of 5 mol % of Pd(acac)2 and 10 mol % of PPh3 at 80 degrees C in HOAc, while for N-unprotected indoles, the reaction was carried out by using 5 mol % of Pd(dba)2 or 2.5 mol % of Pd2(dba)3.CHCl3 with 10 mol % of 2,2'-bipyridine as the catalyst in toluene. This strategy allows the selective installation of electron-deficient olefin functionality at the 3-position of indoles, which might be difficult to obtain by other methods and can be further elaborated.

[reaction: see text] A highly efficient construction of the benzene ring in carbazoles by palladium-catalyzed endo-mode oxidative cyclization of 3-(3'-alkenyl)indoles was developed. The reaction utilizes benzoquinone as the stoichiometric oxidant and is conducted under mild conditions.

Abstract
A novel three-step synthesis of 3-aryl beta-carbolin-1-ones from non-indole starting materials has been developed. The two nitrogen atoms in beta-carbolin-1-one were introduced efficiently by Michael addition of ethyl acetamidocyanoacetate to chalcone. The desired pyridone and indole rings were assembled by an intramolecular ketone-nitrile annulation mediated by aqueous HCl-HOAc and a Cu(I)-catalyzed intramolecular N-arylation of the amide, respectively. The target compounds were found to possess significant activity against tumor cell proliferation.

Abstract
The intermolecular coupling of unactivated alkenes to a range of heterocycles using a Rh(I) catalyst was investigated. A variety of functional groups were incorporated into the alkene, including esters, nitriles, acetals, and phthalimide. Furthermore, the heterocycle tolerated substitution with both electron-rich and electron-deficient groups. The intermolecular coupling became possible after it was discovered that weak acids dramatically increase the rate of both the inter- and intramolecular reactions. An extensive optimization of additives was performed, and HCl.PCy(3) (Cy = cyclohexyl) and HCl.P-t-Bu(2)Et were in general found to be the best additives for the reaction.

Abstract
A divergent synthesis of quinazolin-4-ones and 1,4-benzodiazepin-5-ones by Pd(II)-catalyzed intramolecular amination of tosylated N-allyl-anthranilamides is described. Both kinds of products were available in high yields depending on the different reaction conditions.

Abstract
An expedient synthetic route for 3-aryl beta-carbolin-1-ones was developed starting from ethyl acetamidocyanoacetate and chalcone derivatives. The five- and six-membered nitrogen-containing rings in the beta-carbolin-1-ones were elaborated efficiently by an intramolecular ketone-nitrile annulation and an intramolecular N-arylation of amide respectively.

Abstract
Indole 2-carboxamide derivatives 4 underwent palladium-catalyzed intramolecular cyclization reactions to afford beta-carbolinones or pyrazino[1,2-a]indoles according to different reaction pathways. The complete regioselectivity of the reactions was obtained in different reaction conditions.
