Fate of methidathion residues in biological waste during anaerobic digestion

Fate of organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs) in the "Cambi® TH + AAD" of sludge in a WWTP in Beijing, China

Organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs) are emerging environmental pollutants that cause endocrine disruption, neurotoxicity, and reproductive toxicity. Sewage sludge is an important source of tri-OPFRs that are released into the environment. The occurrence, distribution, and ecological risk of OPFRs in the full-scale "Cambi® thermal hydrolysis (TH) + advanced anaerobic digestion (AAD) + plate-frame pressure filtration" sludge treatment process is closely related to the application of sewage sludge. We tested sludge samples from a wastewater treatment plant in Beijing, China. Nine tri-OPFRs were detected in the sludge samples collected at different treatment units during four seasons. The ΣOPFRs decreased from 1,742.65-2,579.68 ng/g to 971.48-1,702.22 ng/g. The mass flow of tri-OPFRs in treated sludge decreased by 61.4%, 48.9%, 42.4%, and 63.9% in spring, summer, autumn and winter, respectively, effectively reducing the corresponding ecological risk. The ecological risk of tri-OPFRs in sludge in forestland utilization mainly lies in chlorinated tri-OPFRs, especially TCPP and TCEP. No >42.20 t/hm2 of sludge could be used continuously for one year to prevent tri-OPFRs from exceeding the low ecological risk level, indicating that the current commonly applied proportion of sludge (1.6-30 t/hm2) will likely not raise the ecological risk of tri-OPFRs.

Assessing the fate of antibiotics and agrochemicals during anaerobic digestion of animal manure

Antibiotics and pesticides are used extensively by the livestock industry. Agricultural chemicals can pose potential human and environmental health risks due to their toxicity and through their contributions to antimicrobial resistance, and strategies to reduce their emission into the environment are urgently needed. Anaerobic digestion (AD) is a sustainable technology for manure management that produces biogas while also providing an opportunity to degrade agricultural chemicals that are present in manure. While the effects of selected chemicals on biogas production have been investigated previously, little is known about chemical transformations during AD. Using lab-scale AD batch reactors containing dairy manure, degradation kinetics and transformation products (TPs) were investigated for twenty compounds that are likely to be present in manure management systems and that we hypothesized would transform during AD. Digestate samples were extracted using a modified quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged, and safe (QuEChERS) method and analyzed using liquid chromatography - high-resolution mass spectrometry. Eleven of the tested chemicals degraded, leading to the formation of 47 TPs. Three compounds degraded abiotically only, two degraded biotically only, and six degraded both abiotically and biotically. These results suggest that in addition to renewable energy generation, AD contributes to the degradation of chemical contaminants present in agricultural waste streams. However, the potential toxic effects of TPs require further investigation.

Recent Advances on Detection of Insecticides Using Optical Sensors

Insecticides are enormously important to industry requirements and market demands in agriculture. Despite their usefulness, these insecticides can pose a dangerous risk to the safety of food, environment and all living things through various mechanisms of action. Concern about the environmental impact of repeated use of insecticides has prompted many researchers to develop rapid, economical, uncomplicated and user-friendly analytical method for the detection of insecticides. In this regards, optical sensors are considered as favorable methods for insecticides analysis because of their special features including rapid detection time, low cost, easy to use and high selectivity and sensitivity. In this review, current progresses of incorporation between recognition elements and optical sensors for insecticide detection are discussed and evaluated well, by categorizing it based on insecticide chemical classes, including the range of detection and limit of detection. Additionally, this review aims to provide powerful insights to researchers for the future development of optical sensors in the detection of insecticides.

Determination of genotoxic effects of methidathion alkaline hydrolysis in human lymphocytes using the micronucleus assay and square-wave voltammetry

The interaction of pesticides with environmental factors, such as pH, may result in alterations of their physicochemical properties and should be taken into consideration in regard to their classification. This study investigates the genotoxicity of methidathion and its alkaline hydrolysis by-products in cultured human lymphocytes, using the square-wave voltammetry (square wave-adsorptive cathodic stripping voltammetry (SW-AdCSV) technique) and the cytokinesis block micronucleus assay (CBMN assay). According to the SW-AdCSV data the alkaline hydrolysis of methidathion results in two new molecules, one non-electro-active and a second electro-active which is more genotoxic than methidathion itself in cultured human lymphocytes, inducing higher micronuclei frequencies. The present study confirms the SW-AdCSV technique as a voltammetric method which can successfully simulates the electrodynamics of the cellular membrane.

Influence of organic amendment on fate of acetaminophen and sulfamethoxazole in soil

Land application of biosolids or compost constitutes an important route of soil contamination by emerging contaminants such as acetaminophen and sulfamethoxazole. Using (14)C labeling, we evaluated the influence of biosolids and compost on individual fate processes of acetaminophen and sulfamethoxazole in soil. The amendment of biosolids or compost consistently inhibited the mineralization of both compounds but simultaneously enhanced the dissipation of their extractable residues or parent form. Immediately after treatment, the majority of (14)C-residue became non-extractable, reaching 80.3-92.3% of the applied amount at the end of 84-d incubation. Addition of biosolids or compost appreciably accelerated the formation of bound residue, likely due to the fact that the organic material provided additional sites for binding interactions or introduced exogenous microorganisms facilitating chemical transformations. This effect of biosolids or compost should be considered in risk assessment of these and other emerging contaminants.

Persistent organic pollutants in source-separated compost and its feedstock materials--a review of field studies

Composting and the application of compost to the soil follow the principle of recycling and sustainability. Compost can also have a positive effect on physical, chemical, and biological soil parameters. However, little is known about the origin, concentration, and transformation of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in compost. We therefore compiled literature data on some priority POPs in compost and its main feedstock materials from more than 60 reports. Our data evaluation suggests the following findings. First, median concentrations of Sigma 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), Sigma 6 polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and Sigma 17 polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and -furans (PCDD/Fs) were higher in green waste (1803, 15.6 microg/kg dry wt., and 2.5 ng international toxicity equivalent [I-TEQ]/kg dry wt.) than in organic household waste (635, 14.6 microg/kg dry wt., and 2.2 ng I-TEQ/kg dry wt.) and kitchen waste (not available [NA], 14.9 microg/kg dry wt., 0.4 ng I-TEQ/kg dry wt.). The POP concentrations in foliage were up to 12 times higher than in other feedstock materials. Second, in contrast, compost from organic household waste and green waste contained similar amounts of Sigma 16 PAHs, Sigma 6 PCBs, and Sigma 17 PCDD/Fs (1915, 39.8 microg/kg dry wt., and 9.5 ng I-TEQ/kg dry wt., and 1715, 30.6 microg/kg dry wt., and 8.5 ng I-TEQ/kg dry wt., respectively). Third, concentrations of three-ring PAHs were reduced during the composting process, whereas five- to six-ring PAHs and Sigma 6 PCBs increased by roughly a factor of two due to mass reduction during composting. Sigma 17 PCDD/Fs had accumulated by up to a factor of 14. Fourth, urban feedstock and compost had higher POP concentrations than rural material. Fifth, the highest concentrations of POPs were usually observed in summer samples. Finally, median compost concentrations of POPs were greater by up to one order of magnitude than in arable soils, as the primary recipients of compost, but were well within the range of many urban soils. In conclusion, this work provides a basis for the further improvement of composting and for future risk assessments of compost application.

Fate of the fungicide dodemorph during anaerobic digestion of biological waste

The aim of this study was to examine the stability and distribution of the fungicide dodemorph during anaerobic digestion of biological waste, including a short subsequent aerobic treatment. Three reactor experiments were conducted. The influences of pH and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) were further studied in batch experiments. The reactor experiments showed no decrease in the concentration of dodemorph, indicating stability of the fungicide. In connection with the results of the batch experiments, a clear pH-dependency of the partitioning of dodemorph between solid and water phase could be shown. At pH values below the pK(a) value of 7.8, protonated dodemorph molecules predominate. However, a release into the water phase was only observed at pH values of 5 and below. It can be assumed that in the pH range between 5 and 7.8 dodemorph forms bonds with carboxyl groups of organic matter. Dodemorph was not completely extractable from the solid waste matrix due to strong bonds with the organic matter. Solubilising effects by water ingredients of the process water were not apparent.

Pesticide residues in biological waste

The aim of this study was to detect crop protection products (CPP) in single fractions of biological waste and to estimate pesticide concentrations in biological waste, depending on its composition. The composition of biological waste was determined from the literature, which provided information on its local and seasonal variability. The residue analysis included 17 pesticides for the analysis of tropical fruit peels and 48 pesticides for other fractions, e.g. vegetables, other fruits and ornamental flowers. The freeze-dried samples were extracted ultrasonically and purified by means of gel permeation chromatography. The analysis was carried out using gas chromatography with a mass selective detector in the selected ion monitoring mode. All tropical fruit peels contained CPP-residues. Thiabendazole was the most important contaminant with respect to the concentration and frequency of occurrence. The vegetables, other fruits and flowers also contained CPP-residues, such as the fungicides captan and dodemorph and the insecticide endosulfan. Based on import data and the composition of biological waste, the CPP-content of biological waste was estimated for rural and urban areas in summer and winter. Due to the higher percentage of tropical fruit peels, thiabendazole was the main contaminant in winter. The total concentration of CPP, summed up over all substances, ranged between 828 and 1829 microg(kg ww)(-1).
