Abstract
1,1′-Biisoquinolines are a class of bidentate nitrogen donor ligands in the heterocyclic diimine family. This review briefly discusses their properties and the key synthetic pathways available and then concentrates upon their coordination behaviour. The ligands are of interest as they exhibit the phenomenon of atropisomerism (hindered rotation about the C1–C1′ bond). A notation for depicting the stereochemistry in coordination compounds containing multiple stereogenic centers is developed. The consequences of the chirality within the ligand on the coordination behaviour is discussed in detail.

Abstract
The first fifty years of the chemistry of 2,2′-bipyridine are reviewed from its first discovery in 1888 to the outbreak of the second global conflict in 1939. The coordination chemistry and analytical applications are described and placed in the context of the increasingly sophisticated methods of characterization which became available to the chemist in this time period. Many of the “simple” complexes of 2,2′-bipyridine reported in the early literature have been subsequently shown to have more complex structures.

Abstract
We demonstrate that [Cp*Rh] complexes bearing substituted 2,2'-bipyridyl ligands are effective hydrogen evolution catalysts (Cp*=η5 -pentamethylcyclopentadienyl). Disubstitution (at the 4 and 4' positions) of the bipyridyl ligand (namely -tBu, -H, and -CF3 ) modulates the catalytic overpotential, in part due to involvement of the reduced ligand character in formally rhodium(I) intermediates. These reduced species are synthesized and isolated here; protonation results in formation of complexes bearing the unusual η4 -pentamethylcyclopentadiene ligand, and the properties of these protonated intermediates further govern the catalytic performance. Electrochemical studies suggest that multiple mechanistic pathways are accessible, and that the operative pathway depends on the applied potential and solution conditions. Taken together, these results suggest synergy in metal-ligand cooperation that modulates the mechanisms of fuel-forming catalysis with organometallic compounds bearing multiple non-innocent ligands.

Abstract
A metallo-supramolecular triblock copolymer polystyrene-b-polyisoprene-[Ni(2+)]-polystyrene (SI-[Ni(2+)]-S') has been efficiently prepared using a one-pot, two-step procedure, where the blocks are held by bis-terpyridine complexes at the junction of SI-S'. This specific metallo-supramolecular chemistry is demonstrated to be a robust approach to potentially broaden the diversity of block copolymers. The location of the metal-ligand complexes has a profound influence on the phase separation of the triblock copolymer in the bulk, which results in a distinctive phase segregation between the end blocks and leads to an unexpected asymmetry of the triblock copolymer. The metal-ligand complexes are found to be preferentially located on the adjacent spherical domain and form a core-shell structure. The resulting multiphase material exhibits distinct elastomeric properties with significant toughness and creep recovery behavior. This type of triblock copolymer is anticipated to be a novel class of hybrid thermo-plastic elastomeric material with wide tunability and functionality.

Abstract
While the forces responsible for the chelate effect are well-established in coordination chemistry, the origin and implementation of the related thermodynamic trans influence remains debatable. This work illustrates a simple approach for quantifying this effect in labile pseudo-octahedral [Zn(Lk)3](2+) complexes lacking stereochemical preferences (Lk = L1–L4 are unsymmetrical didentate α,α′-diimine ligands). In line with statistics, the triply degenerated meridional isomers mer-[Zn(Lk)3](2+) are stabilized by 0.8 ≤ ΔGexch(mer→fac) ≤ 4.2 kJ/mol over their nondegenerated facial analogues fac-[Zn(Lk)3](2+) and therefore display no apparent trans influence at room temperature. However, the dissection of the free energy terms into opposite enthalpic (favoring the facial isomers) and entropic (favoring the meridional isomers) contributions reveals a trans influence assigned to solvation processes occurring in polar solvents. Altogether, the thermodynamic trans influence operating in [Zn(α,α′-diimine)3](2+) complexes is 1–2 orders of magnitude smaller than the chelate effect. A weak templating effect provided by a noncovalent lanthanide tripod is thus large enough to produce the wanted facial isomer at room temperature.

Abstract
A tunable ESI-MS/MS strategy for differentiation of flavone and flavanone diglycoside isomers based on metal complexation with auxiliary ligands is reported. The addition of a metal salt and an auxiliary ligand to a flavonoid solution results in the formation of [M(II) (flavonoid-H) auxiliary ligand](+) complexes, where M(II) is a transition metal. A series of auxiliary ligands with electron-withdrawing substituents were synthesized to tailor the relative metal binding affinities of the ligands and thus directly influence the stabilities, and consequently the dissociation pathways, of the complexes. Upon collisionally activated dissociation, the complexes yield fragmentation patterns in which the abundances of key diagnostic ions are enhanced, thus facilitating isomer differentiation.
