Nuclear components with microtubule-organizing properties in multicellular eukaryotes: functional and evolutionary considerations

Algal Ocelloids and Plant Ocelli

Vision is essential for most organisms, and it is highly variable across kingdoms and domains of life. The most known and understood form is animal and human vision based on eyes. Besides the wide diversity of animal eyes, some animals such as cuttlefish and cephalopods enjoy so-called dermal or skin vision. The most simple and ancient organ of vision is the cell itself and this rudimentary vision evolved in cyanobacteria. More complex are so-called ocelloids of dinoflagellates which are composed of endocellular organelles, acting as lens- and cornea/retina-like components. Although plants have almost never been included into the recent discussions on organismal vision, their plant-specific ocelli had already been proposed by Gottlieb Haberlandt already in 1905. Here, we discuss plant ocelli and their roles in plant-specific vision, both in the shoots and roots of plants. In contrast to leaf epidermis ocelli, which are distributed throughout leaf surface, the root apex ocelli are located at the root apex transition zone and serve the light-guided root navigation. We propose that the plant ocelli evolved from the algal ocelloids, are part of complex plant sensory systems and guide cognition-based plant behavior.

Biomolecular Basis of Cellular Consciousness via Subcellular Nanobrains

Cells emerged at the very beginning of life on Earth and, in fact, are coterminous with life. They are enclosed within an excitable plasma membrane, which defines the outside and inside domains via their specific biophysical properties. Unicellular organisms, such as diverse protists and algae, still live a cellular life. However, fungi, plants, and animals evolved a multicellular existence. Recently, we have developed the cellular basis of consciousness (CBC) model, which proposes that all biological awareness, sentience and consciousness are grounded in general cell biology. Here we discuss the biomolecular structures and processes that allow for and maintain this cellular consciousness from an evolutionary perspective.

Archaeal Origins of Eukaryotic Cell and Nucleus

Symbiosis is a major evolutionary force, especially at the cellular level. Here we discuss several older and new discoveries suggesting that besides mitochondria and plastids, eukaryotic nuclei also have symbiotic origins. We propose an archaea-archaea scenario for the evolutionary origin of the eukaryotic cells. We suggest that two ancient archaea-like cells, one based on the actin cytoskeleton and another one based on the tubulin-centrin cytoskeleton, merged together to form the first nucleated eukaryotic cell. This archaeal endosymbiotic origin of eukaryotic cells and their nuclei explains several features of eukaryotic cells which are incompatible with the currently preferred autogenous scenarios of eukaryogenesis.

The botanical multiverse of Peter Barlow

Dr Peter Barlow, who died in 2017, was one of the most respected botanists and biologists of the latter half of the 20th Century. His interests covered a wide range of plant biological topics, e.g. root growth and development, plant cytoskeleton, effects of gravity, plant intelligence, pattern formation, and evolution of eukaryotic cells. Here we consider Peter's numerous contributions to the: elucidation of plant patterns; understanding of root biology; role of the plant cytoskeleton in growth and development; influence of the Moon on terrestrial vegetation; Cell Body concept; and plant neurobiology. In so doing we attempt not only to provide an overview of Peter's important work in many areas of plant biology, but also to place that work in the context of recent advances in plant and biological sciences.

Energide-cell body as smallest unit of eukaryotic life

Background

The evolutionary origin of the eukaryotic nucleus is obscure and controversial. Currently preferred are autogenic concepts; ideas of a symbiotic origin are mostly discarded and forgotten. Here we briefly discuss these issues and propose a new version of the symbiotic and archaeal origin of the eukaryotic nucleus.

Scope and Conclusions

The nucleus of eukaryotic cells forms via its perinuclear microtubules, the primary eukaryotic unit known also as the Energide-cell body. As for all other endosymbiotic organelles, new Energides are generated only from other Energides. While the Energide cannot be generated de novo, it can use its secretory apparatus to generate de novo the cell periphery apparatus. We suggest that Virchow's tenet Omnis cellula e cellula should be updated as Omnis Energide e Energide to reflect the status of the Energide as the primary unit of the eukaryotic cell, and life. In addition, the plasma membrane provides feedback to the Energide and renders it protection via the plasma membrane-derived endosomal network. New discoveries suggest archaeal origins of both the Energide and its host cell.

Strasburger's legacy to mitosis and cytokinesis and its relevance for the Cell Theory

Eduard Strasburger was one of the most prominent biologists contributing to the development of the Cell Theory during the nineteenth century. His major contribution related to the characterization of mitosis and cytokinesis and especially to the discovery of the discrete stages of mitosis, which he termed prophase, metaphase and anaphase. Besides his observations on uninucleate plant and animal cells, he also investigated division processes in multinucleate cells. Here, he emphasised the independent nature of mitosis and cytokinesis. We discuss these issues from the perspective of new discoveries in the field of cell division and conclude that Strasburger's legacy will in the future lead to a reformulation of the Cell Theory and that this will accommodate the independent and primary nature of the nucleus, together with its complement of perinuclear microtubules, for the organisation of the eukaryotic cell.

Cell-cell channels, viruses, and evolution: via infection, parasitism, and symbiosis toward higher levels of biological complexity

Between prokaryotic cells and eukaryotic cells there is dramatic difference in complexity which represents a problem for the current version of the cell theory, as well as for the current version of evolution theory. In the past few decades, the serial endosymbiotic theory of Lynn Margulis has been confirmed. This results in a radical departure from our understanding of living systems: the eukaryotic cell represents de facto"cells-within-cell." Higher order "cells-within-cell" situations are obvious at the eukaryotic cell level in the form of secondary and tertiary endosymbiosis, or in the male and female gametophytes of higher plants. The next challenge of the current version of the cell theory is represented by the fact that the multicellular fungi and plants are, in fact, supracellular assemblies as their cells are not physically separated from each other. Moreover, there are also examples of alliances and mergings between multicellular organisms. Infection, especially the viral one, but also bacterial and fungal infections, followed by symbiosis, is proposed to act as the major force that drives the biological evolution toward higher complexity.

Radial microtubule organization by histone H1 on nuclei of cultured tobacco BY-2 cells

In acentriolar higher plant cells, the surface of the nucleus acts as a microtubule-organizing center, substituting for the centrosome. However, the protein factors responsible for this microtubule organization are unknown. The nuclear surfaces of cultured tobacco BY-2 cells possess particles that generate microtubules. We attempted to isolate the proteins in these particles to determine their role in microtubule organization. When incubated with plant or mammalian tubulin, some, but not all, of the isolated nuclei generated abundant microtubules radially from their surfaces. The substance to induce the formation of radial microtubules was confirmed by SDS-PAGE to be a protein with apparent molecular mass of 38 kDa. Partial analysis of the amino acid sequences of the peptide fragments suggested it was a histone H1-related protein. Cloning and cDNA sequence analysis confirmed this and revealed that when the recombinant protein was incubated with tubulin, it could organize microtubules as well as the 38-kDa protein. Histone H1 and tubulin formed complexes immediately, even on ice, and then clusters of these structures were formed. These clusters generated radial microtubules. This microtubule-organizing property was confined to histone H1; all other core histones failed to act as organizers. On immunoblot analysis, rabbit antibodies raised against the 38-kDa protein cross-reacted with histone H1 proteins from tobacco BY-2 cells. These antibodies virtually abolished the ability of the nucleus to organize radial microtubules. Indirect immunofluorescence showed that the antigen was distributed at the nuclear plasm and particularly at nuclear periphery independently from DNA.

A novel function of plant histone H1: microtubule nucleation and continuous plus end association

In higher plant cells, various microtubular arrays can be seen despite of their lack of structurally defined microtubule-organizing centers (MTOCs) like centrosomes in animal cells. Little is known about the molecular properties of the microtubule-organizing centers in higher plant cells. The nuclear surface contains one of these microtubule-organizing centers and generates microtubules radially toward the cell periphery (radial microtubules). Previously, we reported that histone H1 possessed the microtubule-organizing activity, and it was suggested that histone H1 localized on the nuclear surfaces in Tobacco BY-2 cells (Nakayama, T., Ishii, T., Hotta, T., and Mizuno, K. J. Biol. Chem. (submitted)). Here we show that histone H1 forms ring-shaped complexes with tubulin, and these complexes nucleated and elongated the radial microtubules continuously (processively) associating with their proximal ends where the incorporation of tubulin occurred. Furthermore, the polarity of radial microtubules was determined to be proximal end plus. Immunofluorescence microscopy of the isolated nuclei revealed that histone H1 localized on the nuclear surfaces, distinct from that in the chromatin. These results indicate that radial microtubules are organized by a novel MTOC that is totally different from MTOCs previously found in either plant or animal cells.

Cytokinesis in plant and animal cells: endosomes 'shut the door'

For many years, cytokinesis in eukaryotic cells was considered to be a process that took a variety of forms. This is rather surprising in the face of an apparently conservative mitosis. Animal cytokinesis was described as a process based on an actomyosin-based contractile ring, assembling, and acting at the cell periphery. In contrast, cytokinesis of plant cells was viewed as the centrifugal generation of a new cell wall by fusion of Golgi apparatus-derived vesicles. However, recent advances in animal and plant cell biology have revealed that many features formerly considered as plant-specific are, in fact, valid also for cytokinetic animal cells. For example, vesicular trafficking has turned out to be important not only for plant but also for animal cytokinesis. Moreover, the terminal phase of animal cytokinesis based on midbody microtubule activity resembles plant cytokinesis in that interdigitating microtubules play a decisive role in the recruitment of cytokinetic vesicles and directing them towards the cytokinetic spaces which need to be plugged by fusing endosomes. Presently, we are approaching another turning point which brings cytokinesis in plant and animal cells even closer. As an unexpected twist, new studies reveal that both plant and animal cytokinesis is driven not so much by Golgi-derived vesicles but rather by homotypically and heterotypically fusing endosomes. These are generated from cytokinetic cortical sites defined by preprophase microtubules and contractile actomyosin ring, which induce local endocytosis of both the plasma membrane and cell wall material. Finally, plant and animal cytokinesis meet together at the physical separation of daughter cells despite obvious differences in their preparatory events.

The origin of the eukaryotic cell based on conservation of existing interfaces

Current theories about the origin of the eukaryotic cell all assume that during evolution a prokaryotic cell acquired a nucleus. Here, it is shown that a scenario in which the nucleus acquired a plasma membrane is inherently less complex because existing interfaces remain intact during evolution. Using this scenario, the evolution to the first eukaryotic cell can be modeled in three steps, based on the self-assembly of cellular membranes by lipid-protein interactions. First, the inclusion of chromosomes in a nuclear membrane is mediated by interactions between laminar proteins and lipid vesicles. Second, the formation of a primitive endoplasmic reticulum, or exomembrane, is induced by the expression of intrinsic membrane proteins. Third, a plasma membrane is formed by fusion of exomembrane vesicles on the cytoskeletal protein scaffold. All three self-assembly processes occur both in vivo and in vitro. This new model provides a gradual Darwinistic evolutionary model of the origins of the eukaryotic cell and suggests an inherent ability of an ancestral, primitive genome to induce its own inclusion in a membrane.

Disruption of actin microfilaments causes cortical microtubule disorganization and extra-phragmoplast formation at M/G1 interface in synchronized tobacco cells

The roles of actin microfilaments (MFs) in the organization of microtubules (MTs) at the M/G1 interface were investigated in transgenic tobacco BY-2 cells stably expressing a GFP-tubulin fusion protein, using the MF-disrupting agent, Bistheonellide A (BA). When MFs were disrupted by BA treatment, cortical MTs (CMTs) did not become reorganized even 3 h after phragmoplast collapse, whereas non-treated cells completed CMT reorganization within 1 h. Furthermore, in the absence of MFs, the tubulin proteins did not show appropriate recruitment but remained at the site where the phragmoplast had existed, or extra-phragmoplasts were organized. These extra-phragmoplasts could functionally form extra-cell plates. This is the first observation of the formation of multiple cell plates during one nuclear division, and of phragmoplast generation irrespective of the position of the mitotic spindle or nuclei. The significance of these observations on the role of MFs at the M/G1 interface is discussed.

Gamma-tubulin distribution during cortical microtubule reorganization at the M/G1 interface in tobacco BY-2 cells

Cortical microtubules are considered to regulate the direction of cellulose microfibril deposition. Despite their significant role in determining cell morphology, cortical microtubules completely disappear from the cell cortex during M phase and become reorganized at G1 phase. The mechanism by which these microtubules become properly formed again is, however, still unclear. We have proposed that the origin of cortical microtubules is on the daughter nuclear surface, but further cortical microtubule reorganization occurs at the cell cortex. Hence it is probable that the locations of microtubule organizing centers (MTOCs) are actively changing. However, the actual MTOC sites of cortical microtubules were not clearly determined. In this paper, we have examined the distribution of gamma-tubulin, one of the key molecules of MTOCs in various organisms, during cortical microtubule reorganization using both immunofluorescence and a GFP reporter system. Using a monoclonal antibody (clone G9) that recognizes highly conserved residues in y-tubulin, y-tubulin was found to be constitutively expressed and to be clearly localized to microtubule structures, such as the preprophase bands, spindles, and phragmoplasts, specific to each cell cycle stage. This distribution pattern was confirmed by the GFP reporter system. During cortical microtubule reorganization at the M to G1 transition phase, gamma-tubulin first accumulated at the daughter nuclear surfaces, and then seemed to spread onto the cell cortex along with microtubules elongating from the daughter nuclei. Based on the results, it was confirmed that daughter nuclear surfaces acted as origins of cortical microtubules, and that further reorganization occurred on the cell cortex.

Mastoparan alters subcellular distribution of profilin and remodels F-actin cytoskeleton in cells of maize root apices

Indirect immunofluorescence localization of profilin in cells of maize root apices revealed that this abundant protein was present both in the cytoplasm and within nuclei. Nucleo-cytoplasmic partitioning of profilin exhibits tissue-specific and developmental features. Mastoparan-mediated activation of heterotrimeric G-proteins, presumably through triggering a phosphoinositide-signaling pathway based on phosphatidylinositol-4,5-bisphosphate (PIP(2)), induced relocalization of profilin from nuclei into the cytoplasm of root apex cells. In contrast, PIP(2) accumulated within nuclei of mastoparan-treated root cells. Intriguingly, cytoplasmic accumulation of profilin was associated with remodeling of F-actin arrays in root apex cells. Specifically, dense F-actin networks were dismantled and distinct actin patches became associated with the periphery of small vacuoles. On the other hand, disruption of F-actin with the G-actin sequestering agent latrunculin B does not affect the subcellular distribution of profilin or PIP(2). These data suggest that nuclear profilin can mediate a stimulus-response action on the actin cytoskeleton which is somehow linked to a phosphoinositide-signaling cascade.

Mechanism of localization of betaII-tubulin in the nuclei of cultured rat kidney mesangial cells

Tubulin is an alphabeta heterodimer. Both the alpha and beta polypeptides exist as multiple isotypes. Although tubulin was generally thought to exist only in the cytoplasm, we have previously reported the presence of the betaII isotype of tubulin in the nuclei of cultured rat kidney mesangial cells, smooth-muscle-like cells that reside in the glomerular mesangium; nuclear betaII exists as an alphabetaII dimer, capable of binding to colchicine, but in non-microtubule form [Walss et al., 1999: Cell Motil. Cytoskeleton 42:274-284]. We have now investigated the nature of the process by which alphabetaII enters the nuclei of these cells. By micro-injecting fluorescently labeled alphabetaII into mesangial cells, we found that alphabetaII was present in the nuclei of cells only if they were allowed to go through mitosis. In contrast, there were no circumstances in which microinjected fluorescently labeled abetaII or alphabetaIV dimers entered the nuclei. These findings, together with the absence of any nuclear localization signal in alphabetaII, strongly favor the model that alphabetaII, rather than being transported into the intact nucleus, co-assembles with the nucleus at the end of mitosis. Our results also indicate that the nuclear localization mechanism is specific for alphabetaII. This result raises the possibility that alphabetaII may have a specific function that requires its presence in the nuclei of cultured rat kidney mesangial cells.

A mechanism for nuclear positioning in fission yeast based on microtubule pushing

The correct positioning of the nucleus is often important in defining the spatial organization of the cell, for example, in determining the cell division plane. In interphase Schizosaccharomyces pombe cells, the nucleus is positioned in the middle of the cylindrical cell in an active microtubule (MT)-dependent process. Here, we used green fluorescent protein markers to examine the dynamics of MTs, spindle pole body, and the nuclear envelope in living cells. We find that interphase MTs are organized in three to four antiparallel MT bundles arranged along the long axis of the cell, with MT plus ends facing both the cell tips and minus ends near the middle of the cell. The MT bundles are organized from medial MT-organizing centers that may function as nuclear attachment sites. When MTs grow to the cell tips, they exert transient forces produced by plus end MT polymerization that push the nucleus. After an average of 1.5 min of growth at the cell tip, MT plus ends exhibit catastrophe and shrink back to the nuclear region before growing back to the cell tip. Computer modeling suggests that a balance of these pushing MT forces can provide a mechanism to position the nucleus at the middle of the cell.

Motile plant cell body: a "bug" within a "cage"

Analysis of the cytoskeleton in morphogenetically active plant cells allows us to propose a unified concept for the structural organization of eukaryotic cells. Their cytoarchitecture is determined by two principal structural complexes: nucleus-microtubule-based cell bodies ("bugs") and plasma-membrane-F-actin-based cell periphery complexes ("cages"). There are dynamic interactions between each of these entities in response to extracellular and intracellular signals. In the case of the cell body, these signals determine its polarization, rotation and migration. Interactions between cell body and cell periphery complexes determine cell growth polarity and morphogenesis throughout the eukaryotic kingdom.

Root hair formation: F-actin-dependent tip growth is initiated by local assembly of profilin-supported F-actin meshworks accumulated within expansin-enriched bulges

Plant root hair formation is initiated when specialized elongating root epidermis cells (trichoblasts) assemble distinct domains at the plasma membrane/cell wall cell periphery complexes facing the root surface. These localities show accumulation of expansin and progressively transform into tip-growing root hair apices. Experimentation showed that trichoblasts made devoid of microtubules (MTs) were unaffected in root hair formation, whereas those depleted of F-actin by the G-actin sequestering agent latrunculin B had their root hair formation blocked after the bulge formation stage. In accordance with this, MTs are naturally depleted from early outgrowing bulges in which dense F-actin meshworks accumulate. These F-actin caps remain associated with tips of emerging and growing root hairs. Constitutive expression of the GFP-mouse talin fusion protein in transgenic Arabidopsis, which visualizes all classes of F-actin in a noninvasive mode, allowed in vivo confirmation of the presence of distinct F-actin meshworks within outgrowing bulges and at tips of young root hairs. Profilin accumulates, at both the protein and the mRNA levels, within F-actin-enriched bulges and at tips of emerging hairs. ER-based calreticulin and HDEL proteins also accumulate within outgrowing bulges and remain enriched at tips of emerging hairs. All this suggests that installation of the actin-based tip growth machinery takes place only after expansin-associated bulge formation and requires assembly of profilin-supported dynamic F-actin meshworks.

NuMA: a nuclear protein involved in mitotic centrosome function

Nuclear mitotic apparatus protein, NuMA, is an abundant 240 kDa protein with microtubule (MT) binding capacity via its carboxyl terminal region. Structurally, it has been shown to be a double-strand coiled-coil that has a high potential to form filamentous polymers. During interphase, NuMA locates within the nucleus but rapidly redistributes to the separating centrosomes during early mitosis. Xenopus NuMA associates with MT minus end-directed motor cytoplasmic dynein and its motility-activating complex dynactin at mitotic centrosomal regions. This NuMA-motor complex binds the free ends of MTs, converging and tethering spindle MT ends to the poles. A similar scenario appears to be true in higher vertebrates as well. As a mitotic centrosomal component, NuMA is essential for the organization and stabilization of spindle poles from early mitosis until at least the onset of anaphase. The cell cycle-dependent distribution and function of NuMA is regulated by phosphorylation and dephosphorylation, and p34/CDC2 activity is important to the mitotic role of NuMA. This review summarizes data about the structural features and mitotic function of NuMA with particular emphasis on the newly discovered NuMA-motor complex in spindle organization. Furthermore, NuMA may represent a large group of proteins whose mitotic function is sequestered in the nucleus during interphase.

CYTOSKELETAL PERSPECTIVES ON ROOT GROWTH AND MORPHOGENESIS

Growth and development of all plant cells and organs relies on a fully functional cytoskeleton comprised principally of microtubules and microfilaments. These two polymeric macromolecules, because of their location within the cell, confer structure upon, and convey information to, the peripheral regions of the cytoplasm where much of cellular growth is controlled and the formation of cellular identity takes place. Other ancillary molecules, such as motor proteins, are also important in assisting the cytoskeleton to participate in this front-line work of cellular development. Roots provide not only a ready source of cells for fundamental analyses of the cytoskeleton, but the formative zone at their apices also provides a locale whereby experimental studies can be made of how the cytoskeleton permits cells to communicate between themselves and to cooperate with growth-regulating information supplied from the apoplasm.

Cloning, sequencing, and nucleolar targeting of the basal-body-binding nucleolar protein BN46/51

BN46/51 is an acidic protein found in the granular component of the nucleolus of the amebo-flagellate Naegleria gruberi. When Naegleria amebae differentiate into swimming flagellates, BN46/51 is found associated with the basal body complex at the base of the flagella. In order to determine the factors responsible for targeting BN46/51 to a specific subnucleolar region, cDNAs coding for both subunits were isolated and sequenced. Two clones, JG4.1 and JG12.1 representing the 46 kDa and 51 kDa subunits, respectively, were investigated in detail. JG12.1 encoded a polypeptide of 263 amino acids with a predicted size of 30.1 kDa that co-migrated with the 51 kDa subunit of BN46/51 when expressed in yeast. JG4.1 encoded a polypeptide of 249 amino acids with a predicted size of 28.8 kDa that co-migrated with the 46 kDa subunit of BN46/51. JG4.1 was identical to JG12.1 except for the addition of an aspartic acid between positions 94 and 95 of the JG12.1 sequence and the absence of 45 amino acids beginning at position 113. The predicted amino acid sequences were not closely related to any previously reported. However, the sequences did have 26–31% identity to a group of FKPBs (FK506 binding proteins) but lacked the peptidyl-prolyl cis-trans isomerase domain of the FKBPs. Both subunits contained two KKE and three KKX repeats found in other nucleolar proteins and in some microtubule binding proteins. Using ‘Far Western’ blots of nucleolar proteins, BN46/51 bound to polypeptides of 44 kDa and 74 kDa. The 44 kDa component was identified as the Naegleria homologue of fibrillarin. BN46/51 bound specifically to the nucleoli of fixed mammalian cells, cells which lack a BN46/51 related polypeptide. When the JG4.1 and JG12.1 cDNAs were expressed in yeast, each subunit was independently targeted to the yeast nucleolus. We conclude that BN46/51 represents a unique nucleolar protein that can form specific complexes with fibrillarin and other nucleolar proteins. We suggest that the association of BN46/51 with the MTOC of basal bodies may reflect its role in connecting the nucleolus with the MTOC activity for the mitotic spindle. This would provide a mechanism for nucleolar segregation during the closed mitosis of Naegleria amebae.

The plant nucleoskeleton: ultrastructural organization and identification of NuMA homologues in the nuclear matrix and mitotic spindle of plant cells

In the present work we investigate the structural organization of the nucleoskeleton of Allium cepa meristematic root cells. Resinless sections reveal for the first time a residual filamentous network in plant nuclei. This network is composed of branched knobbed filaments with associated globular structures, connected to the lamina and to the dense aggregates of different sizes. Results of immunoblotting show that many components of this network are homologues of intermediate filament-type proteins. NuMA, a coiled-coil protein related to intermediate filaments, found in animal cells, can also be detected in this plant nuclear matrix system. Immunofluorescence reveals a diffuse distribution of the animal NuMA homologues in plant nuclear core filaments in interphase. Resinless immunoelectron microscopy further reveals a distribution along the extended filaments and the dense aggregates. During mitosis, in contrast to the accumulation at the poles in animal cells, NuMA homologues in plant onion cells show a diffuse pattern, which may correspond to the spindle matrix. Our data are the first report of the conservation in plants of NuMA proteins, which may be involved in both nuclear and mitotic spindle organizations.

Mechanisms of nuclear positioning

The mechanisms underlying two types of microtubule-dependent nuclear positioning are discussed. ‘MTOC-dependent nuclear positioning’ occurs when a nucleus is tightly associated with a microtubule organizing center (MTOC). ‘Nuclear tracking along microtubules’ is analogous to the motor-driven motility of other organelles and occurs when the nucleus lacks an associated MTOC. These two basic types of microtubule-dependent nuclear positioning may cooperate in many proliferating animal cells to achieve proper nuclear positioning. Microtubule polymerization and dynamics, motor proteins, MAPs and specialized sites such as cortical anchors function to control nuclear movements within cells.

Gravity and developmental plasticity

Living organisms, especially plants, show some plasticity in their overall development, usually as a response to the external environment. Plasticity may apply not only to the external form of organisms but also to their physiology as well as to the detailed structure of their genome. A further example of plasticity may be developmental instability, where anomalous development seems to appear spontaneously, probably as a result of some transient environmental perturbation. Whether the absence of gravity would have sufficient impact on any living process to evoke a specific course of plastic development is unknown, though it is possible that in certain circumstances special forms, or 'agravimorphs', could be produced. Through such new forms, it should be possible to identify processes required for development in which 1 x g gravity is a necessary participant.
