Abstract
Acute Parvovirus B19 (PVB19) infection is responsible for erythema infectiosum in children and non-specific polyarthralgias in immunocompetent adults associated with skin lesions and rarer manifestations (hepatic, neurological, cardiac or nephrological). In immunocompromised patients, cytopenias are more frequent and in some cases, viremia persists and is responsible for PVB19 chronic infection. PVB19 is responsible for pure red cell aplasia during chronic hemolytic diseases. Acute PVB19 infection is a differential diagnosis of some autoimmune diseases and has been suspected to be a trigger for some autoimmune diseases because of its ability to promote the emergence of autoimmune markers. Mechanisms of molecular mimicry, induction of apoptosis and activation of enzymes have been demonstrated, explaining in part the production of autoantibodies during infection. However, the demonstration of a causal relationship in the triggering of autoimmune disease remains to be done. This review provides a synthesis of the PVB19 infection clinical data in adults with a particular focus on these links with autoimmunity.

Abstract
Pancytopenia due to malnutrition sometimes occurs after gastric bypass but is rare after sleeve gastrectomy. A 35-year-old patient underwent sleeve gastrectomy for severe obesity. Twelve months after the operation, rapid progression of macrocytic anemia with leukopenia and thrombocytopenia occurred, and a decrease in some vitamins and trace elements due to an insufficient food intake was also detected. Haptoglobin decreased, suggesting the presence of hemolysis. In addition, IgM antibody against parvovirus B19 was detected, followed by IgG antibody. Parvovirus B19 infection was suggested to be involved in the rapid progression of anemia in this malnourished patient after bariatric surgery.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION A wide variety of viruses can cause rash diseases (RDs) or acute febrile illness (AFIs) in children, adolescents and adults; however, approximately 19% of RD cases and 40% of AFI cases remain without a defined etiology. Parvovirus B19 (B19V) and herpesvirus infection can also cause RD and/or AFI, and in some risk groups, these infections can become persistent (or latent) and may require hospital treatment. Since these infections do not have mandatory reporting, they can be hidden by other diseases, such as those caused by arboviruses (e.g., dengue virus). In this context, the aim of this study was to pursue the differential laboratory diagnoses of B19V and herpesvirus infections in patients with RD and AFI, without a defined etiology, seen in hospitals and/or reference centers for infectious diseases in Rio de Janeiro. METHODS A total of 114 participants were enrolled in the study, including 54 children and 60 adults. B19V infection was assessed by real-time PCR (qPCR) and ELISA (anti-B19V IgM and IgG). EBV was assessed through qPCR, and betaherpesviruses (HCMV, HHV-6 and HHV-7) were assessed through multiplex qPCR. Sociodemographic and clinical data were obtained from the medical record data of these participants. RESULTS The median age of children with RD was 2 years (interquartile range (IQR): 5), and 55.6% were male. Among adults with AFI, the median age was 38 years (IQR: 21), and 56.7% were female. Regarding RD patients, viral prevalence (and load) were 5.5%(104IU/mL), 3.4%(104IU/mL), 5.5%(104IU/mL) and 11.1%(105IU/mL) for B19V, EBV, HCMV and HHV-6 infection, respectively, and in AFI patients they were 6.6%(105IU/mL), 1.6%(103IU/mL), 3.3%(104IU/mL) for B19V, HCMV and HHV-6, respectively. HHV-7 was not detected in RD or AFI patients. CONCLUSION These results suggest the importance of including B19V and herpesviruses in the differential laboratory diagnoses for patients with RD and AFI, not only for epidemiological purposes but also for the proper management of the patient.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) is a hyperinflammatory condition with uncontrolled activation of lymphocytes and macrophages. Besides a primary (genetic) form, HLH can also be triggered by malignant, autoimmune and infectious diseases. HLH recurrences are rarely described, usually only in primary HLH. Parvovirus B19 (PVB19) Infection is one of the rare and rather benign causes of HLH. Since the infection usually results in long-lasting immunity, recurrent viremia is very uncommon. CASE PRESENTATION We report an unusual case of a young female with recurrent PVB19 infection that led to repeated episodes of HLH. The first episode occurred at the age of 25 years with a three-week history of high fever and nonspecific accompanying symptoms. The diagnosis of HLH was confirmed by HLH-2004 criteria and HScore, PVB19 viremia was detected as underlying cause. Following guideline-based therapy, the patient was symptom-free for one year, before similar symptoms recurred in a milder form. Again, PVB19 was detected and HLH was diagnosed according to HScore. After successful treatment and a nine-month symptom-free interval, a third phase of hyperinflammation with low PVB19 viremia occurred; this time, treatment with a corticosteroid and intravenous immunoglobulin was initiated before the presence of clear diagnostic criteria for HLH. No further events occurred in the following three years. CONCLUSIONS In the case of our patient, the recurrent viremia triggered three episodes of hyperinflammation, two of which were clearly diagnosed as HLH. To our knowledge, this is the first published case of recurrent HLH due to PVB19 infection. Therefore, the case gives new insights in triggering mechanisms for HLH.

Abstract
Parvovirus B19 (B19V) and human bocavirus 1 (HBoV1), members of the large Parvoviridae family, are human pathogens responsible for a variety of diseases. For B19V in particular, host features determine disease manifestations. These viruses are prevalent worldwide and are culturable in vitro, and serological and molecular assays are available but require careful interpretation of results. Additional human parvoviruses, including HBoV2 to -4, human parvovirus 4 (PARV4), and human bufavirus (BuV) are also reviewed. The full spectrum of parvovirus disease in humans has yet to be established. Candidate recombinant B19V vaccines have been developed but may not be commercially feasible. We review relevant features of the molecular and cellular biology of these viruses, and the human immune response that they elicit, which have allowed a deep understanding of pathophysiology.

Abstract
Human parvovirus B19 is a minute ssDNA virus that causes a wide variety of diseases, including erythema infectiosum, arthropathy, anemias and fetal death. In addition to the B19 prototype, two new variants (B19 types 2 and 3) have been identified. After primary infection, B19 genomic DNA has been shown to persist in solid tissues of not only symptomatic but also of constitutionally healthy, immunocompetent individuals. The viral DNA persists as an intact molecule without persistence-specific mutations, and via a storage mechanism with life-long capacity. Thus, the mere presence of B19 DNA in tissue cannot be used as a diagnostic criterion, although a possible role in the pathology of diseases, for example through mRNA or protein production, cannot be excluded. The molecular mechanism, host-cell type and possible clinical significance of tissue persistence are yet to be elucidated.

Abstract
Previous studies suggest a role of viral infection in the development of Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT). Here we report a patient with HT in whom human parvovirus B19 (B19) DNA has been persistently detected in the thyroid regardless of the presence or absence of B19 DNA in peripheral blood mononuclear cells. In contrast to the DNA persistence, however, VP1 capsid protein was not detected in the thyroid by immunohistochemical studies. Thyroid specimens obtained by fine needle aspiration biopsy from two patients with HT and two with Graves' disease were negative for B19 DNA. Thus, whereas a causal link between B19 infection and HT remains to be determined, B19 DNA may persist in the thyroid and B19 infection may facilitate the intrathyroidal inflammatory process in HT patients.

Abstract
A subset of parvovirus B19 (B19) infected patients retains the infection for years, as defined by detection of B19 DNA in bone marrow. Thus far, analysis of B19-specific humoral immune responses and viral genome variations has not revealed a mechanism for the absent viral clearance. In this study, ex-vivo cellular immune responses were assessed by enzyme linked immunospot assay mounted against the majority of the translated viral genome. Compared to seropositive healthy individuals, individuals with B19 persistence (2-8 years) showed larger number of responses to the structural proteins (P = 0.0022), whereas responses to the non-structural protein were of lower magnitude (P = 0.012). These observations provide the first findings of immunological discrepancies between individuals with B19 persistence and healthy individuals, findings that may reflect both failed immunity and antigenic exhaustion.

Abstract
PURPOSE Parvovirus B19 (B19) causes many clinical disorders, of which the most common are erythema infectiosum, aplastic crisis complicating chronic hemolytic anemia, and hydrops fetalis. In young adults, the skin eruption caused by B19 is accompanied by polyarthritis and polyarthralgia in 60% of the cases. Rheumatoid factors and other antibodies including antinuclear antibodies, anti-ADN, and antiphospholipids can be produced in the wake of B19 infection. CURRENT KNOWLEDGE AND KEY POINTS These features may simulate systemic diseases as rheumatoid arthritis (RA), systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) (lupus-like eruption over the cheeks, cytopenia, etc.) or vasculitis (purpura, renal involvement). In addition, there have been a few reports of SLE, vasculitis and other connective tissue diseases developing shortly after a B19 infection associated with virus clearance suggesting that B19 can act as a trigger of systemic disease. However, studies in large series indicate that in fact B19 is probably an extremely rare cause of RA, SLE or vasculitis. FUTURE PROSPECTS AND PROJECTS In fundamental studies B19 interacts with inflammatory cells by regulation of cytokines. More recently, two studies suggest that viral infection due to B19 may affect the course of SLE, leading to specific biological subsets. These preliminary findings require confirmation to elucidate the significance of the presence of B19 in systemic disease.

Abstract
The development of new technologies leads to the discovery of new viruses. For each of these new infectious agents, relevance to transfusion, including transmissibility by transfusion, pathogenicity, prevalence in blood donors, persistence and the availability of screening assays needs to be assessed. Since 1995, one virus and a new family of viruses have been identified. GB virus-C/hepatitis G virus (GBV-C/HGV), a flavi virus with some homology with and epidemiological features of HCV, is not related to post-transfusion hepatitis but seems to positively interfere with human immunodeficiency virus replication. Human circoviruses include TT virus (TTV) and SEN-V. Both are highly variable, constituting a large family of distantly related viruses. They appear ubiquitous, infecting humans very early in life and are largely persistent. No clinical symptoms or pathogenicity is associated with TTV, but SEN-V might be associated with some non-A-E post-transfusion hepatitis. Parvovirus B19 has been known for many years, but its transmission to recipients of plasma derivatives despite viral inactivation raised the issue of screening plasma pools by nucleic acid testing. Most fractionators quantify B19 DNA in plasma pools to ensure a viral load of <10(4) IU mL-1.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the prevalence of recent parvovirus B19 infection in a cohort of children presenting with acute arthropathy and to determine the prevalence of a subsequent diagnosis of juvenile rheumatoid arthritis in this cohort. METHOD In this prospective study, parvovirus B19 IgM antibody was investigated in 75 patients who were referred to our clinic with acute joint complaints and also in 75 healthy controls. One patient in each group was excluded due to neuroblastoma and acute lymphoblastic leukaemia. The characteristics of parvovirus B19 IgM positive patients who were accepted as parvovirus B19 arthropathy were further evaluated. All the patients were followed up for at least 6 weeks and the patients with chronic progression of joint complaints were followed for at least 6 months to determine their progress. The cases of juvenile rheumatoid arthritis in this chronic group were identified. RESULTS Parvovirus B19 IgM was detected in 16 of 74 patients (21.6%) with acute arthropathy compared with 3 of 74 (4.1%) in the healthy control group (chi(2) = 8.67; P = 0.003). The parvovirus B19 positive patients with arthropathy were more likely to become chronic (P = 3.7 x 10(-7)) and to be diagnosed as juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (P = 0.03) than the parvovirus B19 IgM negative group with arthropathy. Additional joint destruction developed in one case who was parvovirus B19 IgM positive in whom juvenile rheumatoid arthritis was diagnosed during follow up. CONCLUSION These data support the hypothesis that parvovirus B19 infection may be associated with the onset of juvenile rheumatoid arthritis in a proportion of patients.

Abstract
Human parvovirus B19 infection causes various clinical symptoms, such as rash, arthropathy, anemias and fetal death, but it can also remain asymptomatic. The arthropathies and anemias can become chronic for several years, not infrequently resembling autoimmune syndromes. B19 replicates only in red blood cell precursors of bone marrow or fetal liver, resulting in high-titred short-lived viremia, but viral DNA is detectable also in cells of several other types. Recently B19 DNA has been found, by very sensitive amplification tests, in certain tissues not only of symptomatic but also of healthy individuals for several years or decades after B19 infection. The mere presence of B19 DNA in these tissues of a symptomatic patient (e.g. joints in chronic arthritis or skin in dermatomyositis) thereby does not prove that the present disease is caused by B19. The diagnosis has to be verified by other innovative means. How and why viral DNA persists in the tissues of healthy individuals is under investigation.

Abstract
Parvovirus B19 is the causative agent of erythema infectiosum. In addition, the infection may be associated with other disease manifestations: anemia and aplastic crisis, thrombo- or granulocytopenies; spontaneous abortion or hydrops fetalis in pregnant women; acute and chronic arthritis in adults and children, myocarditis and hepatitis. Both acute and persistent courses of B19-infections have been reported. All patients develop IgG against the capsid proteins VP1 and VP2, the majority of virus neutralizing antibodies that offer life-long protection against reinfections are directed against the VP1-unique region. IgM is mainly directed against VP2-specific epitopes. These antibodies may be present for only a rather short period of two to ten weeks after acute infection. IgG-antibodies against the nonstructural protein NS1 are preferentially found in patients which are unable to eliminate the virus and develop persisting viremia or virus persistence in distinct organs, e.g. synovial fluid, liver, bone marrow.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE: To study parvovirus B19 infection in immunocompromised subjects such as renal transplantation recipients. METHODS: Two cases of B19 infection in renal transplant recipients have been included in the study. The outcome of the infection has been studied by both serologic and virologic methods. A monitoring of the DNAemia was done by a nested PCR in endpoint titration assays. RESULTS: In one patient with severe anemia an acute B19 infection was diagnosed by PCR 26 days after the transplant; a high level of DNAemia persisted until an intravenous immunoglobulin treatment. Then a sharp decrease of the DNAemia was shown, without full clearance of B19 virus. In a lymphocyte suspension from the organ donor, B19 DNA was detected. In the other patient, who recovered spontaneously from anemia, a persistent B19 infection was demonstrated at day 106 after transplantation and was still demonstrable after 470 days. CONCLUSIONS: A high level of B19 DNAemia was associated with symptomatic infection, with severe anemia, whereas low-level DNAemia was long-lasting in asymptomatic subjects with impaired immunologic responses. The endpoint titration assay by nested PCR was very useful for the monitoring of B19 infection, particularly following the therapeutic intravenous immunoglobulin administration.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Human parvovirus B19 (B19) is regarded as a potential risk factor for certain patient populations receiving plasma components. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS The prevalence of B19 was determined in a limited plasma donor population. Conditions for high-titer screening PCR were designed to allow the removal of plasma donations in the acute phase of infection with virus loads >or=10(7) genome equivalents per milliliter before manufacturing. Antithrombin III lots originating from screened plasma were compared to lots originating from untested plasma with respect to their B19 DNA load by a sensitive PCR assay. RESULTS B19 was shown to have a prevalence of about 1 per 800 plasma donations. Only a minority (1/8000) of occurrences were in the acute phase of infection. Removing plasma units with high virus load as determined by high-titer screening PCR significantly decreased peak virus loads of plasma pools for fractionation. Together with a virus-removal capacity of 10.4 log(10) of the manufacturing process, this screening resulted in a final antithrombin III product that was nonreactive for B19 on PCR. CONCLUSION Combining the strategy of high-titer screening PCR with the virus reduction capacity of the manufacturing process considerably increased the margin of B19 virus safety of antithrombin III. This strategy should have positive impact on other plasma components as well.

Abstract
Parvovirus B19 has been associated by some investigators with cases of severe hepatitis. The aim of the present study was to determine the presence of active parvovirus B19 infection among 129 Brazilian patients with non-A-E hepatitis. The patients were assayed for antibodies against parvovirus B19, IgM class, by ELISA. In IgM-positive cases, parvovirus B19 DNA was assayed by PCR in serum and liver tissue and parvovirus VP1 antigen in liver tissue was assayed by immunohistochemistry. Antibodies against parvovirus B19, IgM class, were detected in 3 (2.3%) of 129 patients with non-A-E hepatitis. Previous surgery and blood transfusions were reported by these 3 patients. One patient was a 56-year-old female with severe hepatitis, with antimitochondrial antibody seropositivity and submassive necrosis at liver biopsy, who responded to corticosteroid therapy. Strong evidence for active parvovirus B19 infection was found in this patient, with parvovirus B19 DNA being detected by PCR in liver tissue. Furthermore, parvovirus VP1 antigen was also detected in liver tissue by immunohistochemistry. The other two IgM-positive patients were chronic hepatitis cases, but active infection was not proven, since neither viral DNA nor antigen were detected in their liver tissues. This and other reports suggest a possible relation between parvovirus B19 infection and some cases of hepatitis.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE We report an 11-year-old boy presenting with splenomegaly, chronic thrombocytopenia and concordant neutropenia. RESULTS In contrast to autoantibodies against platelets, there were no detectable neutrophil-specific autoantibodies present in this patient. Extensive serologic investigations revealed increased IgM- and IgG-antibody titers against parvovirus B19. A nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR) showed parvovirus B19-specific sequences in the patient's bone-marrow cells but not in the serum. Specific antibodies against the structural proteins VP1 and VP2 in addition to those against non-structural protein NS1 of parvovirus B19 were detected by Western blot analysis. Thrombocytopenia and neutropenia responded to immunosuppressive therapy and subsequent splenectomy, the latter being necessary due to severe side-effects of steroid medication. CONCLUSION Autoimmune thrombocytopenia/neutropenia may have been triggered and/or sustained by a chronic parvovirus B19 infection. Patients with this very rare disorder should be screened for this virus.

Abstract
Human parvovirus B19 is the cause of several distinct clinical syndromes. The most common is erythema infectiosum (fifth disease), a febrile exanthem occurring primarily in children. Recent studies have shown that parvovirus B19 can cause acute arthritis and occasionally a chronic arthropathy, both in children and adults. Parvovirus B19 DNA has been detected in studies in the synovial tissue of patients with rheumatoid arthritis, but other studies have varied in their findings. Recent studies also indicate a possible connective tissue disease-like syndrome with parvoviral infections. The common features of this syndrome are malar eruption, arthralgias, arthritis, and laboratory abnormalities including antinuclear antibody and rheumatoid factor positivity. However, the data indicate it is unlikely that B19 infection causes rheumatoid arthritis or systemic lupus erythematosus. Continued studies of the pathogenesis of acute and chronic parvoviral B19 infections and arthropathy may provide insights into virus-host interactions and mechanisms of joint disease and connective tissue disease.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To determine the clinical significance of human parvovirus B19 infection in patients with primary Sjögren's syndrome (SS) and to investigate the immunologic and hematologic features related to B19 infection. METHODS We included 80 consecutive patients with primary SS (74 women and 6 men), with a mean age of 62 years (range, 24 to 87 years) that were seen in our Unit. All patients fulfilled the European Community criteria for SS. As controls, we included 140 consecutive sera samples analyzed for B19 antibodies in our Microbiology Department and obtained from adult inpatients and outpatients of our Hospital. Serum from all patients and controls was tested for antibodies to B19 by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Additionally, the presence of B19 DNA in serum and in circulating leukocytes was investigated by nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR). RESULTS Serological evidence of past B19 infection (positive IgG antibodies without IgM antibodies) was present in 28 (35%) patients with primary SS. None of these patients showed evidence for B19 viremia, and B19 virus DNA was not detected in the circulating leukocytes of IgG-B19(+) patients. Positivity for IgM antibodies to B19 was not detected in any patient. When compared with patients without evidence of past B19 infection, those with primary SS and past B19 infection showed a higher prevalence of cytopenia (57% v 15%; P < .001), and, specifically, of leukopenia (36% v 4%; P < .001). Additionally, when compared with controls positive for IgG-B19, SS patients with these antibodies had a higher prevalence of cytopenia (57% v 13%; P < .001), leukopenia (36% v 3%; P < .001) and thrombocytopenia (21% v 0%; P = .003). CONCLUSIONS Serological evidence of past B19 infection is associated with the presence of cytopenia in our patients with primary SS. A possible relationship between B19 infection and the presence of cytopenia in primary SS may occur in some patients immunologically or genetically predisposed.

Abstract
PURPOSE The spectrum of clinical and biological expressions of parvovirus B19 infection is incompletely described. METHODS We report 16 retrospective cases of primary parvovirus B19 infection that occurred in immunocompetent adults and were diagnosed by serology. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION Most cases conformed to the classical descriptions of parvovirus-induced arthropathy (transient polyarthritis often accompanied by erythema, dysesthesia and pruritus). However, the diagnosis of primary parvovirus B19 infection should also be considered in other clinical and biological situations such as edema, acute anemia or cytopenia, vascular purpura, neuro-ophthalmologic manifestations, and hepatitis. Parvovirus infection may mimic diseases such as lupus erythematosus or systemic necrotizing vasculitis. The risk for confusion with both diseases is increased, as immunological abnormalities such as hypocomplementemia, when they are systematically searched for, prove to be common.

Abstract
Viral arthritis occurs transiently in most cases, because the infection is self limiting. The arthropathy associated with human parvovirus B19, however, often lasts for more than 2 years and their clinical symptoms may resemble with those of rheumatoid arthritis. Data have been accumulating for the link of B19 infection with chronic polyarthropathy or rheumatoid arthritis (RA), and we discuss the possible mechanism for the role of B19 in the etiopathology of RA.

Abstract
Human parvovirus B19 (B19) DNA was detected in the synovial tissues in 30 of 39 patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), and infrequently in those with osteoarthritis and traumatic joints. On the other hand, the expression of the B19 antigen VP-1 was specific (27/27) in RA synovium with active synovial lesions, but not in osteoarthritis and controls. The target cells of B19 were macrophages, follicular dendritic cells, T cells, and B cells, but not synovial lining cells in the synovium. B19-negative bone marrow cells, tonsil cells, and macrophage cell line U-937 cells became positive for the expression of VP-1, and more productive for interleukin 6 and tumor necrosis factor alpha when cocultured with RA synovial cells. The expression of VP-1 and the production of interleukin 6 and tumor necrosis factor alpha was significantly inhibited by the addition of neutralizing antibody for B19, suggesting that B19 detected in RA synovial cells is infective. B19 is involved in the initiation and perpetuation of RA synovitis, leading to joint lesions.

Abstract
Postinfection arthritis represents a significant portion of the referrals to pediatric rheumatology centers, particularly in the United States. Many viral and common bacterial infections can be associated with arthritis, and their recognition can sometimes be difficult on a clinical basis. In patients with acute onset of arthritis, the clinician should actively seek epidemiologic, clinical, or laboratory evidence of infection. Diagnostic tests should be used rationally and results interpreted carefully. Some infections, once recognized, require antibiotic treatment, but in most cases anti-inflammatory therapy is successful in treating articular symptoms.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Human B19 parvovirus (B19), identified in 1975, was only recognised as the causative agent of fifth disease in 1983. The incidence of viraemia is low, around 1 in 1,000, but is sufficient to ensure that most plasma pools for fractionation contain some virus. While infection usually occurs in childhood and is benign, chronic infection sometimes occurs and may be of concern in certain patient groups. MATERIALS AND METHODS This review is based on a meeting held in March 1995, and addresses recent concerns regarding the potential transmission of B19 infection by pooled plasma products. RESULTS Recent data on the pathophysiology and assay of this virus are summarised along with possible approaches to donor screening, product screening, and virus removal. Only five cases of symptomatic infection have been reported in persons with haemophilia, but no technology for virus removal is established, and infection may be of concern in pregnant women, and in patients with enhanced red cell turnover or who are immunosuppressed, including those infected with human immunodeficiency virus, but only rarely in immunocompetent patients. CONCLUSIONS For the future, well-validated assays relevant to virus infectivity are required if blood donations, plasma pools, or plasma products are to be screened, and an in-process virus inactivation step for B19 would be highly desirable. In the interim, non-plasma or recombinant products or a selective transfusion policy might be used in patient groups in which B19 infection is of particular concern. Further clinical data on the prognosis and impact of B19 infection are needed to justify both such policies and the future adoption of new technologies designed to reduce any excess B19 infectivity arising from transfused products.

Abstract
A previously healthy 33-year-old male patient presented with fever, rash and polyarthritis. Subsequently, he developed pleuropneumonitis, pericardial effusion and hepatitis. The diagnosis of parvovirus B19 infection was based on the detection of parvovirus DNA by PCR in a skin biopsy, bone marrow cells and serum. The patient had high parvovirus IgG antibody titres but remained negative for IgM at a three month follow-up, suggesting persistence of the virus or reinfection. It is concluded that detection of viral DNA is needed to verify a parvovirus B19 infection even in an immunologically healthy host.
