Abstract
A large portion of global grape production has been utilized for wine production, accompanied by tremendous pressure to dispose grape pomace. To achieve circular economy, the high-value recycling of grape pomace must be considered. The social level barriers to circular economy promotion are also important constraints, like the acceptability of upcycled products. The main components of grape pomace and their utilization are summarized, and critical reviews of green extraction methods analyzed the key points of grape pomace recycling process to achieve the goal of sustainability in the production process, culminating in discussions of the factors affecting the acceptability of upcycled products. Grape pomace bioactive substances have higher added value. To realize its green extraction, various emerging technologies need to be made a comprehensive choice. Nevertheless, the acceptability of upcycled products is influenced by personal, context and product factors, optimizing them is essential to remove the constraints of circular economy development.

Abstract
Sulfur-containing compounds are naturally found in crude oil, and they can be partially removed during the refining process. The wide use of fossil fuels has a significant contribution to sulfur emissions into the atmosphere, and Governments are striving to reduce the amount of the fuels by environmental regulations. The reduction of sulfur levels in diesel and other transportation fuels is beneficial from economic and environmental points, but meeting this standard represents a major operational and economic challenge for the oil and gas industry. Quantitative measurement of the sulfur amount must be taken along the oil refining chains guided by standards of measurement and recommended analytical methods such as various American Society for Testing and Materials methods (ASTM D2622, ASTM D5453, ASTM D7039, and ASTM D7220). Advancement in the refining processes and environmental regulations also require reliable measurements and well-defined criteria for compliance assessment. This work presented a brief review of the ASTM Standards used in the laboratories of the Brazilian oil and gas industry to determine the total sulfur content in fuels. We also presented an approach based on the reproducibility of the measurement methods and the guard band concept to evaluate the conformity statement.

Abstract
Of late, DESs have occupied the centre stage due to their eco-friendly and resource-efficient nature and their low toxicity. In this work, we have investigated the structural and thermal stability of hemoglobin (Hb) in two choline chloride ([Ch]Cl)-based DESs namely urea [Ch]Cl-urea (DES1) and [Ch]Cl-glycerol (Gly); (DES 2). Different biophysical techniques reveal that the presence of DESs facilitates the stability of Hb in a concentration-dependent manner and the extent of stability is more pronounced in [Ch]Cl-Gly as compared to [Ch]Cl-urea. Additionally, for a better understanding of the role of DESs in modulating the thermal and structural stability of Hb, studies have been performed on Hb in the presence of individual constituents of DESs, i.e., [Ch]Cl, urea, and Gly. Altogether, it was observed that the effect on the stability of Hb was by the presence of the DESs rather than their individual constituents. For instance, urea itself is a destabilizing co-solvent for biomolecules. However, the harmful effects of urea were surpassed when a DES is formed in the presence of [Ch]Cl. Therefore, overall, it can be concluded that both DESs can be described as potential non-harmful, green, and promising solvents for enhancing the structural and thermal stability of Hb.

Abstract
Red microalgae represent a natural reservoir of beneficial substances with applications in different industrial sectors. They are rich in natural biomolecules known for their antihypertensive, antioxidant, antimicrobial, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, antitumor, and anticoagulant activities. Many red microalgae are a source of vitamins, minerals, photochemicals, polyunsaturated fatty acids, and a wide spectrum of polysaccharides. The content of their valuable compounds and their activities have turned red microalgae into cellular factories of special interest in food, nutraceutical, and pharmaceutical industries. Like all microalgae, the red ones are superior to traditional crops for the aims of biotechnology as they are renewable sources widely available in great quantities and are easy to culture. Moreover, some of the most studied red microalgae are generally recognized as safe. This review summarizes the valuable biochemicals from red microalgae and highlights their health and nutritional benefits.

Abstract
Plant-derived bioactive compounds have been extensively studied and used within food industry for the last few decades. Those compounds have been used to extend the shelf-life and improve physico-chemical and sensory properties on food products. They have also been used as nutraceuticals due to broad range of potential health-promoting properties. Unlike the synthetic additives, the natural plant-derived compounds are more acceptable and often regarded as safer by the consumers. This chapter summarizes the extraction methods and sources of those plant-derived bioactives as well as recent findings in relation to their health-promoting properties, including cardio-protective, anti-diabetic, anti-inflammatory, anti-carcinogenic, immuno-modulatory and neuro-protective properties. In addition, the impact of applying those plant-derived compounds on seafood products is also investigated by reviewing the recent studies on their use as anti-microbial, anti-oxidant, coloring and flavoring agents as well as freshness indicators. Moreover, the current limitations of the use of plant-derived bioactive compounds as well as future prospects are discussed. The discoveries show high potential of those compounds and the possibility to apply on many different seafood. The compounds can be applied as individual while more and more studies are showing synergetic effect when those compounds are used in combination providing new important research possibilities.

Abstract
Peppers of the Capsicum genus have a rich nutritional composition and are widely consumed worldwide. Thus, they find numerous applications in the food, pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries. One commercial application is oleoresin production, a nonpolar fraction rich in bioactive compounds, including capsaicinoids and carotenoids. Among the technologies for pepper processing, special attention is given to supercritical fluid technologies, such as supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) with pure solvents and CO2 plus modifiers, and SFE assisted by ultrasound. Supercritical fluid-based processes present advantages over the classical extraction techniques like using less solvents, short extraction times, specificity and scalability. In this review, we present a brief overview of the nutritional aspects of peppers, followed by studies that apply supercritical fluid technologies to produce extracts and concentrate bioactives, besides oleoresin encapsulation. Furthermore, we present related phase equilibrium, cost estimation, and the gaps and needs for the full use of peppers from a sustainable perspective.

Abstract
Benzene compounds that are prevalent in the soil as organic pollutants mainly include BTEX (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and three xylene isomers) and PAHs (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons). These pose a severe threat to many aspects of human health. Therefore, the accurate measurement of BTEX and PAHs concentrations in the soil is of great importance. The samples for analysis of BTEX and PAHs need to be suitable for the various detection methods after pretreatment, which include Soxhlet extraction, ultrasonic extraction, solid-phase microextraction, supercritical extraction, and needle trap. The detection techniques mainly consist of gas chromatography (GC), mass spectrometry (MS), and online sensors, and provide comprehensive information on contaminants in the soil. Their performance is evaluated in terms of sensitivity, selectivity, and recovery. Recently, there has been rapid progress in the pretreatment and analysis methods for the quantitative and qualitative analyses of BTEX and PAHs. Therefore, it is necessary to produce a timely and in-depth review of the emerging pretreatment and analysis methods, which is unfortunately absent from the recent literature. In this work, state-of-art extraction techniques and analytical methods have been summarized for the determination of BTEX and PAHs in soil, with a particular focus on the potential and limitations of the respective methods for different aromatic hydrocarbons. Accordingly, the paper will describe the basic methodological knowledge, as well as the recent advancement of pretreatment and analysis methods for samples containing BTEX and PAHs.

Abstract
The valorization of by-products is currently a matter of great concern to improve the sustainability of the food industry. High quality by-products derived from the food chain are omega-3 fatty acids, being fish the main source of docosahexaenoic acid and eicosapentaenoic acid. The search for economic and sustainable sources following the standards of circular economy had led to search for strategies that put in value new resources to obtain different omega-3 fatty acids, which could be further employed in the development of new industrial products without producing more wastes and economic losses. In this sense, seeds and vegetables, fruits and crustaceans by products can be an alternative. This review encompasses all these aspects on omega-3 fatty acids profile from marine and agri-food by-products together with their extraction and purification technologies are reported. These comprise conventional techniques like extraction with solvents, cold press, and wet pressing and, more recently proposed ones like, supercritical fluids fractionation and purification by chromatographic methods. The information collected indicates a trend to combine different conventional and emerging technologies to improve product yields and purity. This paper also addresses encapsulation strategies for their integration in novel foods to achieve maximum consumer acceptance and to ensure their effectiveness.

Abstract
The unique properties of supercritical fluid technology have found wide application in various industry sectors. Supercritical fluids allow for the obtainment of new types of products with special characteristics, or development and design of technological processes that are cost-effective and friendly to the environment. One of the promising areas where supercritical fluids, especially carbon dioxide, can be used is the oil industry. In this regard, the present review article summarizes the results of theoretical and experimental studies of the use of supercritical fluids in the oil and gas industry for supercritical extraction in the course of oil refining, increasing oil recovery in the production of heavy oil, hydraulic fracturing, as well as processing and disposal of oil sludge and asphaltenes. At the end of the present review, the issue of the impact of supercritical fluid on the corrosion of oil and gas equipment is considered. It is found that supercritical fluid technologies are very promising for the oil industry, but supercritical fluids also have disadvantages, such as expansion or incompatibility with materials (for example, rubber).

Red ginseng oil (RGO), rather than the conventional aqueous extract of red ginseng, has been receiving much attention due to accumulating evidence of its functional and pharmacological potential. In this review, we describe the key extraction technologies, chemical composition, potential health benefits, and safety of RGO. This review emphasizes the proposed molecular mechanisms by which RGO is involved in various bioactivities. RGO is mainly produced using organic solvents or supercritical fluid extraction, with the choice of method greatly affecting the yield and quality of the end products. RGO contains a high unsaturated fatty acid levels along with considerable amounts of lipophilic components such as phytosterols, tocopherols, and polyacetylenes. The beneficial health properties of RGO include cellular defense, antioxidation, anti-inflammation, anti-apoptosis, chemoprevention, hair growth promotion, and skin health improvement. We propose several molecular mechanisms and signaling pathways that underlie the bioactivity of RGO. In addition, RGO is regarded as safe and nontoxic. Further studies on RGO must focus on a deeper understanding of the underlying molecular mechanisms, composition–functionality relationship, and verification of the bioactivities of RGO in clinical models. This review may provide useful information in the development of RGO-based products in nutraceuticals, functional foods, and functional cosmetics.

Abstract
The crustacean processing industry has experienced significant growth over recent decades resulting in the production of a great number of by-products. Crustacean by-products contain several valuable components such as proteins, lipids, and carotenoids, especially astaxanthin and chitin. When isolated, these valuable compounds are characterized by bioactivities such as anti-microbial, antioxidant, and anti-cancer ones, and that could be used as nutraceutical ingredients or additives in the food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic industries. Different innovative non-thermal technologies have appeared as promising, safe, and efficient tools to recover these valuable compounds. This review aims at providing a summary of the main compounds that can be extracted from crustacean by-products, and of the results obtained by applying the main innovative non-thermal processes for recovering such high-value products. Moreover, from the perspective of the circular economy approach, specific case studies on some current applications of the recovered compounds in the seafood industry are presented. The extraction of valuable components from crustacean by-products, combined with the development of novel technological strategies aimed at their recovery and purification, will allow for important results related to the long-term sustainability of the seafood industry to be obtained. Furthermore, the reuse of extracted components in seafood products is an interesting strategy to increase the value of the seafood sector overall. However, to date, there are limited industrial applications for this promising approach.

Abstract
Astaxanthin is a xanthophyll carotenoid widely used in aquaculture and nutraceutical industries. Among natural sources, the microalga Haematococcus pluvialis is the non-genetically modified organism with the greatest capacity to accumulate astaxanthin. Therefore, it is important to understand emerging strategies in upstream and downstream processing of astaxanthin from this microalga. This review covers all aspects regarding the production and the market of natural astaxanthin from H. pluvialis. Astaxanthin biosynthesis, metabolic pathways, and nutritional metabolisms from the green vegetative motile to red hematocyst stage were reviewed in detail. Also, traditional and emerging techniques on biomass harvesting and astaxanthin recovery were presented and evaluated. Moreover, the global market of astaxanthin was discussed, and guidelines for sustainability increasing of the production chain of astaxanthin from H. pluvialis were highlighted, based on biorefinery models. This review can serve as a baseline on the current knowledge of H. pluvialis and encourage new researchers to enter this field of research.

Abstract
Near-infrared persistent luminescent (or afterglow) nanoparticles with the biologically appropriate size are promising materials for background-free imaging applications, while the conventional batch synthesis hardly allows for reproducibility in controlling particle size because of the random variations of reaction parameters. Here, highly efficient chemistry was matched with an automated continuous flow approach for directly synthesizing differently sized ZnGa2O4:Cr3+ (ZGC) nanoparticles exhibiting long persistent luminescence. The key flow factors responsible for regulating the particle formation process, especially the high pressure-temperature and varied residence time, were investigated to be able to tune the particle size from 2 to 6 nm and to improve the persistent luminescence. Upon silica shell encapsulation of the nanoparticles accompanied by an annealing process, the persistent luminescence of the resulting particles was remarkably enhanced. High-fidelity automated flow chemistry demonstrated here offers an alternative for producing ZGC nanoparticles and will be helpful for other compositionally complex metal oxide nanoparticles.

Abstract
With the increasing global demand for edible oils and the restriction of arable land minimum in China, woody oil plants have gradually become the optimal solution to cover the shortage of current edible oil supply and to further improve the self-sufficiency rate. However, due to the lack of knowledge and technique, problems like “how to make full use of these plant resources?” and “how to guide consumers with reasonable data?” limit the development of woody oilseed industry towards a sustainable circular economy. In this review, several emerging unique woody oil plants in China were introduced, among which Litsea cubeba as a new woody oil plant was highlighted as a reference case based on its current research progress. Unlike other woody oil plants, essential oil rather than oil from Litsea cubeba has always been the main product through the years due to its interesting biological activities. Most importantly, its major component, citral, could be the base for other synthesized perfume compounds with added value. Moreover, the sustainable biorefinery of large amounts of waste residual after Litsea cubeba essential oil processing is now technically feasible, which could inspire a total valorization pathway for other woody oil plants to make more competitive plant-based products with both economic, social, and ecological benefits.

Abstract
Abstract Bioflavonoids such as hesperidin and hesperetin as anticancer and antioxidant agents are widely used in the formulation of many herbal drugs. Recently, promising evidence for the prevention and treatment of COVID 19 using these compounds has been reported. Unfortunately, these compounds are often insoluble in aqueous media and have low stability in gastric acid environment. These factors reduced the bioavailability of related oral dosage forms in digestive system. Reduction of particle size and controlled release delivery system can decline the mentioned problems. In the presented research, extraction of bioflavonoids from Citrus sinensis L. (sweet orange) peels was performed using supercritical carbon dioxide. Experimental central composite design was employed for determination of optimal conditions. Qualification analysis was performed using LC–MS, and hesperidin and hesperetin were identified in herbal extract. Micronization and coating of the flavonoids nanoparticles on sugar spheres have been performed using an inhouse developed supercritical technique. Characterization of coated nanoparticles was done using FESEM and ImageJ software. The in vitro antioxidant activity of coated samples was investigated by ferrous ion chelating activity. According to the extraction results, concentration of ethanol as organic co-solvent has the greatest effect on the extraction yield. Analysis of FESEM images illustrated that nanoparticles of extract components with particle size distribution of 5–100 nm were coated successfully. The solubility and antioxidant activity of nanoparticles in aqueous media have increased significantly compared to original form. This process led to increasing dissolution rate and improving the oral bioavailability of flavonoids. Graphical abstract ![]()

Abstract
Background: Khella (Ammi visnaga Lam.) fruits (Apiaceae) are rich in furanochromones, mainly khellin and visnagin, and are thus incorporated in several pharmaceutical products used mainly for treatment of renal stones. Methods: The objective of this study was to compare the yield of khellin and visnagin obtained using different conventional solvents and supercritical fluid extraction (SCFE) with carbon dioxide (containing 5% methanol as co-solvent). Water, acetone and ethanol (30% and 95%) were selected as conventional solvents. Results: Highest extract yield was obtained from 30% ethanol (15.44%), while SCFE gave the lowest yield (4.50%). However, the percentage of furanochromones were highest in SCFE (30.1%), and lowest in boiling water extract (5.95%). HPLC analysis of conventional solvent extracts showed other coumarins that did not appear in supercritical fluid extraction chromatogram due to non-selectivity of solvent extraction. Ammi visnaga extracts as well as standard khellin and visnagin were tested for their cytotoxic activity using sulforhodamine B assay on breast cancer (MCF-7) and hepatocellular carcinoma (Hep G2) cell lines. Results revealed a strong cytotoxic activity (IC50 < 20 µg/mL) for the SCFE and standard compounds (khellin and visnagin) (IC50 ranging between 12.54 ± 0.57 and 17.53 ± 1.03 µg/mL). However, ethanol and acetone extracts had moderate cytotoxic activity (IC50 20–90 µg/mL) and aqueous extract had a weak activity (IC50 > 90 µg/mL). Conclusions: Thus, supercritical fluid extraction is an efficient, relatively safe, and cheap technique that yielded a more selective purified extract with better cytotoxic activity.

Abstract
As part of the continuing efforts in lignin-first biorefinery concepts, this study concerns a consolidated green processing approach to obtain high yields of hemicelluloses and lignin with a close to native molecular structure, leaving a fiber fraction enriched in crystalline cellulose. This is done by subcritical water extraction of hemicelluloses followed by organosolv lignin extraction. This initial report focuses on a detailed characterization of the lignin component, with the aim of unravelling processing strategies for the preservation of the native linkages while still obtaining good yields and high purity. To this effect, a static cycle process is developed as a physical protection strategy for lignin, and advanced NMR analysis is applied to study structural changes in lignin. Chemical protection mechanisms in the cyclic method are also reported and contrasted with the mechanisms in a reference batch extraction process where the role of homolytic cleavage in subsequent repolymerization reactions is elucidated.

Abstract
Plants consist of triterpenoids such as phytosterols (PT) (C29H50O) with steroidal nuclei, including sitosterol, stigmasterol, brassicasterol and campesterol. They are hydrophobic but soluble in alcohol and other organic solvents and are isolated from industrial waste deodorizer distillates of various edible oil industries. They exist as free PT or their ester derivatives in soybean, rice, wheat, oat, cottonseed and corn fiber, and other cereals and grains. Conventional isolation techniques such as solvent extraction, distillation, evaporative fractionation, saponification and chemical esterification are employed for isolation and purification of PT. The present article reviews the various advanced separation techniques like solvent crystallization, supercritical fluid extraction, high speed counter-current chromatography and enzymatic process as strategic methods to isolate and purify sterols.

Abstract
The present study described the optimization of the extraction process with carbon dioxide in supercritical state for obtaining extractives, especially polyphenols from softwood bark, Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.). Using a full 23 factorial design of experiments, the effect of varying the working parameters on the yield of extractives was studied for the following ranges: temperature 40-100 °C, pressure 1050-9000 psi (7.2-62 MPa), and concentration of EtOH/water co-solvent mixture 40-96.6%. In addition, total phenolics content and the antioxidant capacity of the spruce bark extract were determined. The optimum operating conditions for the yield of extractives were identified as 73 °C, 6465 psi (44.5 MPa), and 58% EtOH/water cosolvent concentration for a yield of 8.92%. The optimum conditions for achieving a total phenolics content of 13.89 mg gallic acid equivalent (GAE)/g dry extract were determined as: 45 °C, 1050 psi (7.2 MPa), and 96.6% EtOH/water mixture.

Abstract
In this study, we investigated the potential of mixtures of tetrahydrofuran (THF) and water as tunable solvents for the microextraction of contaminants in solid and in liquid matrices. These two miscible solvents have very different dielectric constant and Hildebrand solubility parameters, so that tunable mixtures spanning a wide range of dispersion and hydrogen bonding forces could be easily prepared by simply changing their composition. In this way, rapid and more efficient extraction methods can be developed. A liquid-liquid and a solid-liquid microextraction method for the determination of bisphenol A (BPA) in urine and ochratoxin A (OTA) in cereal baby food were developed as a proof of concept. Both, the chemical composition and the relative solvency of the THF-water mixtures, expressed as Teas solubility parameters, were studied in order to gain some insights into the chemical interactions governing analyte extraction. For urine, the salting-out extraction with THF:water and NaCl was evaluated, a process which is still scarcely investigated for analytical purposes. These methods featured good recoveries (above 95%), satisfactory standard deviation (5-6%) and good sensitivity (detection limits of 0.l μg L-1 for BPA and of 0.l ng g-1 for OTA) with the advantages of simplicity, rapidity and low consumption of reagents. Recoveries for other compounds and matrices (bisphenols ad phosphorus flame retardants in dust and in tap water, dyes in tap water and OTA in powder milk) were also assessed to prove the wide potential of these tunable solvent mixtures.

Abstract
Polyphenols are one of the largest and most widespread groups of secondary metabolites in the plants world. These compounds are of particular interest due to their occurrence and the properties they possess. The main sources of phenolic compounds are fruits and vegetables, but lately, more and more studies refer to woody vascular plants, especially to bark, as an important source of phenolic compounds with a potential biological effect. This study aims to bring together information on the phenolic compounds present in the bark of woody vascular plants by discussing extraction methods, the chemical composition of the extracts and potential biological effects. The literature data used in this paper were collected via PubMed (2004⁻2019). Search terms were: bark, rhytidome, woody vascular plant, polyphenols, phenolic compounds, biologic activity, antioxidant, immunostimulatory, antimutagenic, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and antitumoral. This paper intends to highlight the fact that the polyphenolic extracts obtained from the bark of woody vascular plants represent sources of bioactive compounds with antioxidant, immunostimulatory, antimutagenic, antibacterial properties, etc. Future research directions should be directed towards identification and isolation of bioactive compounds. Consequently, biologically active compounds obtained from the bark of woody plants could be exploited on an industrial scale.

Abstract
This paper describes a pioneer on-line hyphenation between a supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) and an ion mobility spectrometry (IMS) detector through a Tenax TA sorbent trap as retention interface. By means of a simple design, taking advantage of both techniques, this new coupling allows us to extract and preconcentrate analytes and in a second step to determine them. As result, an increase in the accuracy of the analytical process was achieved by elimination of sample transfer from one device to another. In addition, this new coupling reduces the time needed for the optimization of a new SFE method, since the detector can monitor on-line the efficiency of the extraction. The parameters affecting the coupling and its success have been studied in detail via the extraction of benzene and toluene from soil samples. Finally, the suitability of IMS as on-line detector to monitor compounds of industrial interest extracted by SFE was evaluated taking as a model, the extraction and detection of 1,8-cineole (eucalyptol) in rosemary aromatic plants, which could be extrapolated on an industrial scale.

Abstract
Optimization process is an important aspect in the natural product extractions. Herein, an alternative approach is proposed for the optimization in extraction, namely, the Generalized Likelihood Uncertainty Estimation (GLUE). The approach combines the Latin hypercube sampling, the feasible range of independent variables, the Monte Carlo simulation, and the threshold criteria of response variables. The GLUE method is tested in three different techniques including the ultrasound, the microwave, and the supercritical CO2 assisted extractions utilizing the data from previously published reports. The study found that this method can: provide more information on the combined effects of the independent variables on the response variables in the dotty plots; deal with unlimited number of independent and response variables; consider combined multiple threshold criteria, which is subjective depending on the target of the investigation for response variables; and provide a range of values with their distribution for the optimization.

Abstract
Various innovations have so far been devised to extract cholesterol from foods. Achieving a supercritical fluid is perhaps one of the greatest human successes in the field of extraction from foodstuffs in last 2 decades. Supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) offers a rapid, environment-friendly and selective method for extracting cholesterol from foods. This review aims at investigating the application of supercritical fluids in extraction of cholesterol. Various factors affecting the SFE, collection systems, examples of cholesterol extraction and SFE benefits are some of the issues discussed in this study.

Abstract
Supercritical fluid technology (SFT) offers many advantages as a potential complexation method compared to the conventional kneading technique. Its applicability to processess in which solvents are not required is a significant benefit. The main aim of this study was to evaluate, experimentally and computationally, the applicability of SFT in the preparation of β-cyclodextrin complexes with two selected essential oils, namely, carvacrol and linalool. Preparation of the complexes was performed using kneading and SFT method. Several methods were used in the solid-state characterization. These include thermal analysis, powder X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance. Besides, molecular dynamics simulations of all studied systems were conducted in order to have a deeper and a detailed insight, at the atomic level, of the nature of the two used techniques. Despite all the advantages of SFT, better results of guest molecule entrapment inside β-cyclodextrin were obtained with the kneading method. The percentages of oil content for linalool samples were 70 ± 14 and 84 ± 9% for SFT and kneading method, respectively, while the drug content values for carvacrol samples were 67 ± 15 and 81 ± 13% for SFT and kneading method, respectively. Interestingly, simulation results were in perfect agreement with the experimental ones and, moreover, they provided a plausible explanation for the obtained results. In conclusion, our results showed that the SFT was unsuccessful in enhancing the stability of the studied complexes contrary to that of the conventational kneading method, and in both cases, molecular dynamics simulations correctly predicted the expected outcomes.

Abstract
Marine microalgae and seaweeds (microalgae) represent a sustainable source of various bioactive natural carotenoids, including β-carotene, lutein, astaxanthin, zeaxanthin, violaxanthin and fucoxanthin. Recently, the large-scale production of carotenoids from algal sources has gained significant interest with respect to commercial and industrial applications for health, nutrition, and cosmetic applications. Although conventional processing technologies, based on solvent extraction, offer a simple approach to isolating carotenoids, they suffer several, inherent limitations, including low efficiency (extraction yield), selectivity (purity), high solvent consumption, and long treatment times, which have led to advancements in the search for innovative extraction technologies. This comprehensive review summarizes the recent trends in the extraction of carotenoids from microalgae and seaweeds through the assistance of different innovative techniques, such as pulsed electric fields, liquid pressurization, supercritical fluids, subcritical fluids, microwaves, ultrasounds, and high-pressure homogenization. In particular, the review critically analyzes technologies, characteristics, advantages, and shortcomings of the different innovative processes, highlighting the differences in terms of yield, selectivity, and economic and environmental sustainability.

Abstract
Supercritical fluid technology offers several advantages in preparation of microparticles. These include uniformity in particle size, morphology, and drug distribution without degradation of the product. One of the recent advantages is preparation of porous aerogel carrier with proper aerodynamic properties. In this study, we aimed to prepare chitosan aerogel microparticles using supercritical fluid (SCF) technology and compare that with microparticles produced by freeze drying (FD). Loading the prepared carriers with a model drug (salbutamol) was also performed. Comparisons of the particle properties and physicochemical characterizations were undertaken by evaluating particle size, density, specific surface area, and porosity. In vitro drug release studies were also investigated. The effect of many variables, such as molecular weight of chitosan oligomers, concentrations of chitosan, and concentrations of tripolyphosphate on the release, were also investigated. Chitosan aerogels were efficiently produced by SCF technology with an average particle size of 10 μm with a tapped density values around 0.12 g/mL, specific surface area (73-103) m(2)/g, and porosity (0.20-0.29) cc/g. Whereas, microparticles produced by FD method were characterized as cryogels with larger particle size (64 microns) with clear cracking at the surface. Sustained release profile was achieved for all prepared microparticles of salbutamol produced by the aforementioned methods as compared with pure drug. The results also demonstrates that chitosan molecular weight, polymer concentration, and tripolyphosphate concentration affected the release profile of salbutamol from the prepared microparticles. In conclusion, SCF technology was able to produce chitosan aerogel microparticles loaded with salbutamol that could be suitable for pulmonary drug delivery system.
