Laboratory sand column study of encapsulated buffer release for potential in situ pH control

Remediation of nitrate-nitrogen contaminated groundwater using a pilot-scale two-layer heterotrophic-autotrophic denitrification permeable reactive barrier with spongy iron/pine bark

A novel two-layer heterotrophic-autotrophic denitrification (HAD) permeable reactive barrier (PRB) was proposed for remediating nitrate-nitrogen contaminated groundwater in an oxygen rich environment, which has a packing structure of an upstream pine bark layer and a downstream spongy iron and river sand mixture layer. The HAD PRB involves biological deoxygenation, heterotrophic denitrification, hydrogenotrophic denitrification, and anaerobic Fe corrosion. Column and batch experiments were performed to: (1) investigate the NO3(-)-N removal and inorganic geochemistry; (2) explore the nitrogen transformation and removal mechanisms; (3) identify the hydrogenotrophic denitrification capacity; and (4) evaluate the HAD performance by comparison with other approaches. The results showed that the HAD PRB could maintain constant high NO3(-)-N removal efficiency (>91%) before 38 pore volumes (PVs) of operation (corresponding to 504d), form little or even negative NO2(-)-N during the 45 PVs, and produce low NH4(+)-N after 10 PVs. Aerobic heterotrophic bacteria played a dominant role in oxygen depletion via aerobic respiration, providing more CO2 for hydrogenotrophic denitrification. The HAD PRB significantly relied on heterotrophic denitrification. Hydrogenotrophic denitrification removed 10-20% of the initial NO3(-)-N. Effluent total organic carbon decreased from 403.44mgL(-1) at PV 1 to 9.34mgL(-1) at PV 45. Packing structure had a noticeable effect on its denitrification.

Use of silicate minerals for pH control during reductive dechlorination of chloroethenes in batch cultures of different microbial consortia

In chloroethene-contaminated sites undergoing in situ bioremediation, groundwater acidification is a frequent problem in the source zone, and buffering strategies have to be implemented to maintain the pH in the neutral range. An alternative to conventional soluble buffers is silicate mineral particles as a long-term source of alkalinity. In previous studies, the buffering potentials of these minerals have been evaluated based on abiotic dissolution tests and geochemical modeling. In the present study, the buffering potentials of four silicate minerals (andradite, diopside, fayalite, and forsterite) were tested in batch cultures amended with tetrachloroethene (PCE) and inoculated with different organohalide-respiring consortia. Another objective of this study was to determine the influence of pH on the different steps of PCE dechlorination. The consortia showed significant differences in sensitivities toward acidic pH for the different dechlorination steps. Molecular analysis indicated that Dehalococcoides spp. that were present in all consortia were the most pH-sensitive organohalide-respiring guild members compared to Sulfurospirillum spp. and Dehalobacter spp. In batch cultures with silicate mineral particles as pH-buffering agents, all four minerals tested were able to maintain the pH in the appropriate range for reductive dechlorination of chloroethenes. However, complete dechlorination to ethene was observed only with forsterite, diopside, and fayalite. Dissolution of andradite increased the redox potential and did not allow dechlorination. With forsterite, diopside, and fayalite, dechlorination to ethene was observed but at much lower rates for the last two dechlorination steps than with the positive control. This indicated an inhibition effect of silicate minerals and/or their dissolution products on reductive dechlorination of cis-dichloroethene and vinyl chloride. Hence, despite the proven pH-buffering potential of silicate minerals, compatibility with the bacterial community involved in in situ bioremediation has to be carefully evaluated prior to their use for pH control at a specific site.

Application of encapsulation (pH-sensitive polymer and phosphate buffer macrocapsules): a novel approach to remediation of acidic ground water

Macrocapsules, composed of a pH-sensitive polymer and phosphate buffer, offer a novel remediation alternative for acidic ground waters. To test their potential effectiveness, laboratory experiments were carried out followed by a field trial within a coal pile runoff (CPR) acidic contaminant plume. Results of traditional limestone and macrocapsule treatments were compared in both laboratory and field experiments. Macrocapsules were more effective than limestone as a passive treatment for raising pH in well water from 2.5 to 6 in both laboratory and field experiments. The limestone treatments had limited impact on pH, only increasing pH as high as 3.3, and armoring by iron was evident in the field trial. Aluminum, iron and sulfate concentrations remained relatively constant throughout the experiments, but phosphate increased (0.15-32 mg/L), indicating macrocapsule release. This research confirmed that macrocapsules may be an effective alternative to limestone to treat highly acidic ground water.

Preparation of acidic and alkaline macrocapsules for pH control

A series of experiments was performed to prepare acidic macroencapsulated buffers composed of 20% Ca(H2PO4)(2) and 80% Eudragit S 100 polymer and alkaline macrocapsules composed of 65% K2HPO4 and 35% Eudragit E PO polymer (the powdered form of Eudragit E 100). Eudragit S 100 was shown to be soluble at a pH greater than 7.0, while Eudragit E 100 was soluble at a pH less than 7.0. Both polymers did not impart significant biochemical oxygen demand. The Eudragit E PO polymer solution showed low toxicity (EC50=91%) based on the Microtox Acute Toxicity Test compared to the 0.1mM background phosphate buffer solution (EC50=100%) while the Eudragit S 100 polymer solution showed higher toxicity (EC50=53%). Batch tests showed that the acidic macrocapsules reduced the pH of a 0.1mM phosphate solution from 11 to neutral, while the alkaline macrocapsules increased the pH of a 0.1mM phosphate solution from 3 to neutral. The macrocapsules could potentially be used as an in situ proportional pH controller for groundwater remediation.

Use of pyrite for pH control during hydrogenotrophic denitrification using metallic iron as the ultimate electron donor

Maintenance of stable pH through provision of adequate buffering is of importance to many pollutant removal processes where either acid or base is produced as a reaction product. The objective of this study was to evaluate the suitability of pyrite (FeS2) as an in situ buffering agent for arresting pH increase during metallic iron assisted hydrogenotrophic denitrification. Pyrite is considered promising for this purpose because it is a mineral which is unstable under moderately reducing, i.e., anoxic conditions, where such denitrification takes place, and therefore expected to consume hydroxide ions produced due to hydrogenotrophic denitrification reactions and get oxidized to ferrous hydroxide Fe(OH)2. The theoretical basis for this buffering action was established through chemical speciation studies using the chemical speciation software, MINEQL+. Experimental evaluation of the buffering efficiency of pyrite showed that it was effective in arresting pH increase associated with denitrification in both batch systems and during flow through reactive porous media. Further, addition of pyrite had no demonstrable toxic effect on the denitrifying microorganisms, though elevated sulfate concentration was seen in the effluent after denitrification.

Theoretical analysis of the influence of process parameters on the use of an encapsulated phosphate buffer to control pH in a soil column

A one-dimensional mathematical model was developed to analyze the influence of different physical and chemical parameters on the performance of an encapsulated phosphate buffer for controlling pH and enhancing a pH-dependent process in a soil column. Three scenarios were investigated where base equivalents are produced through the degradation of the target compound (scenario I), through reactions in the matrix (scenario II), and a combination of both mechanisms (scenario III). In all three scenarios, the production of base equivalents is countered by the release of the acidic core of the encapsulated phosphate, resulting in an enhanced removal of the target compound. A sensitivity analysis on the model shows that under the conditions investigated, the removal of the target compound is dependent on the flowrate, porosity. dispersion coeflicient, reaction rate constants, mass of added capsules, and the point of addition of the capsules. The approach can be used to analyze scenarios where encapsulated buffers can control pH and optimize pH-dependent processes in a soil column.
