Abstract
It has long been claimed that the anion of the DES or IL is critical for controlling the redox properties of metal ions. In this study we investigate the effect of different salt anions on the copper redox properties and speciation, and compare that with the effect of the different solvent anions, when a single copper salt is used in a range of solvents. It is shown that the effect of the solvent anion is much more significant than that of the salt anion on the redox properties. It is also found that copper species remain the same copper tetrachloride species despite the starting salt. An exception is seen for the copper(I) salt, which makes linear dichloride species, as well as the copper(II) acetate system, which displays concentration dependence. When the anion of the ionic liquid is changed, the copper species change correspondingly with the coordinating strength of the solvent anion, leading to a greater difference in redox response, which is due to the different species present. Thus, these speciation differences can be used to modify the redox potentials in the solution.

Abstract
Photocatalyzed Giese-type alkylations of C(sp3 )-H bonds are very attractive reactions in the context of atom-economy in C-C bond formation. The main limitation of such reactions is that when using highly polymerizable olefin acceptors, such as unsubstituted acrylates, acrylonitrile, or methyl vinyl ketone, radical polymerization often becomes the dominant or exclusive reaction pathway. Herein, we report that the polymerization of such olefins is strongly limited or suppressed when combining the photocatalytic activity of benzophenone (BP) with a catalytic amount of Cu(OAc)2 . Under mild and operationally simple conditions, the Giese adducts resulting from the C(sp3 )-H functionalization of amines, alcohols, ethers, and cycloalkanes could be synthesized. Preliminary mechanistic studies have revealed that the reaction does not proceed through a radical chain, but through a dual BP/Cu photocatalytic process, in which both CuII and low-valent CuI/0 species, generated in situ by reduction by the BP ketyl radical, may react with α-keto or α-cyano intermediate radicals, thus preventing polymerization.

Abstract
The ability of the fungal carcinogen, ochratoxin A (OTA, 1), to facilitate copper-promoted oxidative DNA damage has been assessed using supercoiled plasmid DNA (Form I)-agarose gel electrophoresis and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry with selected-ion monitoring (GC-MS-SIM). OTA is shown to promote oxidative cleavage of Form I DNA with optimal cleavage efficiency occurring under excess Cu(II) conditions. As the concentration of OTA was increased and present in excess of Cu(II) the cleavage was less effective. Parallel findings were found for the ability of the OTA-Cu mixture to facilitate oxidative base damage. Yields (lesions per 10(6) DNA bases) of modified bases upon exposure of calf-thymus DNA (CT-DNA) to OTA-H(2)O(2)-Cu(II) were diminished when the OTA:Cu ratio was increased to 5:1. Electrochemical studies carried out in methanol implicate a ligand-centered 2e oxidation of OTA in the presence of excess Cu(II), while product analyses utilizing electrospray mass spectrometry support the intermediacy of the quinone, OTQ (3), in Cu-promoted oxidation of OTA. The implications of these findings with regard to the mutagenicity of OTA are discussed.
