Modulations of event-related potentials by tactile negative priming

Negative priming (NP) refers to the finding that responses to previously irrelevant stimuli are impeded relative to responses to new stimuli. To date, NP has been demonstrated in the visual, auditory, and tactile sensory modalities with both inhibitory processes and retrieval-based processes contributing to the effect. To gain deeper insights into the role of both processes, event-related potentials (ERPs) have been measured during NP tasks with visual and separately with auditory stimuli. The specific patterns of ERP correlates are mixed, yet it can generally be concluded from previous research that amplitudes of both the N2 and the P3 reflect important components of NP. We present the first study to assess the ERP correlates of NP in the tactile modality. We observe a significant modulation of the P3 but not of the N2, thus providing tentative support for the existence of modality-specific differences in the ERP correlates of NP.

The negative priming paradigm: An update and implications for selective attention

Negative Priming (NP) is an influential paradigm in cognitive psychology that was originally developed to measure attentional selection. Yet, up to the mid-1990s, a large number of experimental reports questioned whether the NP effect is based on attentional inhibition and/or episodic retrieval processes. In this review, we summarize findings since the mid-1990s and discuss new and old theoretical approaches to Negative Priming. We conclude that more than one process contributes to NP and that future research should analyze the conditions under which a particular process contributes to NP. Moreover, we argue that the paradigm--although it does not measure a single cognitive process alone--is still a useful tool for understanding selection in cognition. In fact, it might be a virtue of the paradigm that several cognitive processes work here together as selection in nonexperimental contexts is surely a multidimensional process. From this perspective, research on NP is relevant for all research fields analyzing selection. We therefore close our review by discussing the implications of the new evidence on NP for theories of selective attention.

Hyperactivation of right inferior frontal cortex in young binge drinkers during response inhibition: a follow-up study

AIMS

The objective of this study was to examine brain activity, with particular attention to prefrontal function, during response execution and inhibition in youths who have engaged in binge drinking (BD) for at least 2 years.

DESIGN

Event-related potentials (ERPs) were recorded twice within 3 years, during performance of a Go/NoGo task.

SETTING

The study was part of a longitudinal study of the neurocognitive effects of BD.

PARTICIPANTS

A total of 48 undergraduate students, 25 controls (14 females) and 23 binge drinkers (10 females), with no personal or family history of alcoholism or psychopathological disorders.

MEASUREMENTS

The Go-P3 and NoGo-P3 components of the ERPs were examined by principal component analysis and exact low-resolution tomography analysis (eLORETA).

FINDINGS

Binge drinkers showed larger Go-P3 amplitudes than controls in the first and second evaluations (P = 0.019). They also showed larger NoGo-P3 amplitude in the second evaluation (P = 0.002). eLORETA analyses in the second evaluation revealed significantly greater activation of the right inferior frontal cortex (rIFC) in binge drinkers than in controls during successful inhibition (P < 0.05).

CONCLUSIONS

Young binge drinkers appear to show abnormal brain activity as measured by event-related potentials during response execution and inhibition which may represent a neural antecedent of difficulties in impulse control.

Frontally mediated inhibitory processing and white matter microstructure: age and alcoholism effects

RATIONALE

The NOGO P3 event-related potential is a sensitive marker of alcoholism, relates to EEG oscillation in the δ and θ frequency ranges, and reflects activation of an inhibitory processing network. Degradation of white matter tracts related to age or alcoholism should negatively affect the oscillatory activity within the network.

OBJECTIVE

This study aims to evaluate the effect of alcoholism and age on δ and θ oscillations and the relationship between these oscillations and measures of white matter microstructural integrity.

METHODS

Data from ten long-term alcoholics to 25 nonalcoholic controls were used to derive P3 from Fz, Cz, and Pz using a visual GO/NOGO protocol. Total power and across trial phase synchrony measures were calculated for δ and θ frequencies. DTI, 1.5 T, data formed the basis of quantitative fiber tracking in the left and right cingulate bundles and the genu and splenium of the corpus callosum. Fractional anisotropy and diffusivity (λL and λT) measures were calculated from each tract.

RESULTS

NOGO P3 amplitude and δ power at Cz were smaller in alcoholics than controls. Lower δ total power was related to higher λT in the left and right cingulate bundles. GO P3 amplitude was lower and GO P3 latency was longer with advancing age, but none of the time-frequency analysis measures displayed significant age or diagnosis effects.

CONCLUSIONS

The relation of δ total power at CZ with λT in the cingulate bundles provides correlational evidence for a functional role of fronto-parietal white matter tracts in inhibitory processing.

Inhibiting Irrelevant Information in Adult Children of People With Alcoholism

Adult children of people with alcoholism (ACAs; n = 21) and adults with no family history of alcoholism (non-ACAs; n = 24) completed a task designed to test inhibitory ability using a reaction-time based negative priming task. Although participants in the ACA group responded more slowly overall, they did not differ on this task as compared with participants in the non-ACA group. This pattern of results suggests that inhibitory ability is preserved in ACAs, at least within the context of the current negative priming task. The authors discuss study limitations and inconsistencies in the ACA literature.

Negative Priming as a Memory Phenomenon

Abstract. Reactions to recently ignored stimuli are slowed down or more error prone when compared to reactions to control stimuli. This so-called negative priming effect has been traditionally investigated in the area of selective attention. More recent theory developments conceptualize the negative priming effect as a memory phenomenon. This review presents four models to explain the phenomenon as well as their essential empirical evidence. The review also considers several negative priming characteristics - that is stimulus modality, prime selection and prime response requirement, probe interference, stimulus repetition, aging and thought disorders, and physiological correlates. On these bases, it is concluded that only the distractor inhibition and the episodic retrieval models have survived empirical testing so far. Whereas evidence has increased that negative priming clearly obeys memory retrieval principles, the distractor inhibition model has lost much of its persuasiveness within recent years.

Tobacco Use, Alcohol Dependence, and Cognitive Performance

Chronic alcohol abuse has long been associated with a mild, generalized pattern of cognitive decrements. However, it is important to note that problem drinking rarely occurs in isolation from abuse of other drugs. For people dependent upon alcohol, tobacco is one of the mostly commonly coabused substances. Recent research suggests that individuals with alcohol dependency may gravitate toward tobacco use, in part, because of the positive effects of nicotine on aspects of cognitive performance that may be compromised as a consequence of chronic alcohol misuse. In this article, the author focuses on the effects of nicotine on behavioral and electrophysiological indexes of cognitive performance, and the impact of these effects on alcohol-related cognitive decrements. The author discusses implications of these findings in the context of treatment and recovery of people with alcoholism.

Event-related brain potential variations during location and identity negative priming

Event-related brain potential (ERP) correlates of the negative priming (NP) effect were studied in this experiment. One task required responses to targets which were or were not distractors in the preceding trial (identity priming); in the other task, the location of the distractor in the preceding trial was or was not the same as the location of the actual target (location priming). Whereas both tasks were associated with reaction time increases for negative priming, we obtained differential effects for ERP data. The parieto-occipital P1-N1 amplitude was reduced and P3 latency was delayed in response to location NP targets. No such effects were found for identity NP. The P3 amplitude was significantly larger after identity NP but not after location NP targets. It was concluded that location NP appears to be related to the early inhibition of sensory processing and to a slowing of the stimulus evaluation process. No ERP indications of inhibitory mechanisms were found with the identity NP task. The larger P3 amplitudes in the identity priming task may indicate increased attentional resources that are necessary for the processing of NP targets.

Perceptual Learning in Detoxified Alcoholic Men: Contributions From Explicit Memory, Executive Function, and Age

BACKGROUND

Visuospatial and visuoperceptual deficits have consistently been observed in detoxified alcoholics; however, the severity of impairment varies with test and task type. Identifying the component processes and factors that underlie a particular deficit may reveal why some visuospatial and visuoperceptual tasks are more compromised than others and may lead to the specification of neural systems that are particularly vulnerable in alcoholism.

METHODS

We examined visuoperception and perceptual learning with a picture fragment identification task in 51 recently detoxified nonamnesic alcoholic men (aged 29-66 years) compared with 63 normal control men (aged 21-70 years). Executive function and explicit declarative memory were also assessed.

RESULTS

Despite deficits in the primary components of visuoperception and explicit memory for visuospatial stimuli, the alcoholics showed normal perceptual learning. Although the alcoholics and controls performed at comparable levels on the perceptual learning task, multiple regression analyses indicated that the factors accounting for perceptual learning variance differed between and within groups. Visuoperceptual abilities consistently predicted perceptual learning in the control subjects but not the alcoholic subjects. Explicit memory contributed to perceptual learning performance in both the alcoholic and control groups. Frontal executive ability consistently predicted perceptual learning in the alcoholic subjects, but it had predictive ability only in the control subjects as time elapsed. Age was significantly correlated with perceptual learning performance in both groups. Lifetime alcohol consumption, but not alcoholism duration, was an independent predictor of 1-hr perceptual learning.

CONCLUSIONS

These correlational analyses suggest that controls invoke basic visuospatial processes to perform a perceptual learning task, whereas alcoholics invoke higher-order cognitive processes (i.e., frontal executive systems) to perform the same task at normal levels. Use of more demanding cognitive systems by the alcoholics may be less efficient and more costly to processing capacity than those invoked by controls.
