Abstract
Biomarkers are critical for diagnostic, monitoring and management of cardiovascular diseases. Opportunities to improve how biomarkers are used are important. This editorial on biomarkers in coronary artery disease provides commentary on the study as well as broad benchmarks on what make ideal biomarkers. Biomarker discovery is difficult and opportunities to expand and improve their use should be encouraged.

Abstract
Objective Assessing subclinical atherosclerosis (sAT) is crucial for preventing cardiovascular disease. The Mediterranean diet is considered the gold standard for cardiovascular protection, but cultural and economic barriers can hinder adherence to it. The prudent dietary pattern (DP) has been associated with protective effects against chronic diseases. However, its impact on primary cardiovascular prevention remains uncertain. This study examined adherence to various DPs and their effect on sAT, measured by total carotid plaque area (TPA). Methods This cross-sectional study included 116 adults enrolled in a cardiovascular prevention program. Demographic, clinical, laboratory, and TPA data were collected. Adherence to DPs was assessed using a food frequency questionnaire. Participants were categorized according to their adherence to 4 mutually exclusive DPs: prudent, traditional, sweet, and mixed. Generalized linear models were used to assess the effect of DPs on TPA, adjusting for relevant cardiovascular variables. Results The traditional, sweet, and mixed DPs were associated with higher TPA values than the prudent DP, with medians (interquartile range) of 27 (99), 39 (49), 27.5 (58), and 0 (36) mm2, respectively. Gamma regression analysis found that the beta exponents for the traditional, sweet, and mixed DPs versus the prudent DP were 3.78 (p=0.046); 3.73 (p=0.013), and 2.20 (p=0.072), respectively. Systolic blood pressure values were higher for the sweet and mixed DPs than for the prudent DP (133.9±11.7; 132.5±13.9 and 122.7±8.8 mmHg, respectively; p<0.05). Conclusion These findings underscore the importance of additional research and targeted interventions to promote healthier DPs to promote improvements in cardiovascular health.

Abstract
Myocardial infarction (MI) is a cardiovascular disease that occurs when there is an elevated demand for myocardial oxygen as a result of the rupture or erosion of atherosclerotic plaques. Globally, the mortality rates associated with MI are steadily on the rise. Traditional diagnostic biomarkers employed in clinical settings for MI diagnosis have various drawbacks, prompting researchers to investigate fast, precise, and highly sensitive biosensor platforms and technologies. Biosensors are analytical devices that combine biological elements with physicochemical transducers to detect and quantify specific compounds or analytes. These devices play a crucial role in various fields including healthcare, environmental monitoring, food safety, and biotechnology. Biosensors developed for the detection of cardiac biomarkers are typically electrochemical, mass, and optical biosensors. Nanomaterials have emerged as revolutionary components in the field of biosensing, offering unique properties that significantly enhance the sensitivity and specificity of the detection systems. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the advancements and applications of nanomaterial-based biosensing systems. Beginning with an exploration of the fundamental principles governing nanomaterials, we delve into their diverse properties, including but not limited to electrical, optical, magnetic, and thermal characteristics. The integration of these nanomaterials as transducers in biosensors has paved the way for unprecedented developments in analytical techniques. Moreover, the principles and types of biosensors and their applications in cardiovascular disease diagnosis are explained in detail. The current biosensors for cardiac biomarker detection are also discussed, with an elaboration of the pros and cons of existing platforms and concluding with future perspectives.

Abstract
NLRP3 (NOD-, LRR-, and pyrin domain-containing protein 3) inflammasome pathway has a critical role in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis. Activation of this pathway is implicated in the subendothelial inflammation and atherosclerosis progression. The NLRP3 inflammasome are cytoplasmic sensors with the distinct capacity to identify a wide range of inflammation-related signals, which enhance NLRP3 inflammasome assembly and allow it to trigger inflammation. This pathway is triggered by a variety of intrinsic signals which exist in atherosclerotic plaques, like cholesterol crystals and oxidized LDL. Further pharmacological findings indicated that NLRP3 inflammasome enhanced caspase-1-mediated secretion of pro-inflammatory mediators like interleukin (IL)- 1β/18. Newly published cutting-edge studies suggested that non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs) including microRNAs (miRNAs, miRs), long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs), and circular RNAs (circRNAs) are major modulators of NLRP3 inflammasome in atherosclerosis. Therefore, in this review, we aimed to discuss the NLRP3 inflammasome pathway, biogenesis of ncRNAs as well as the modulatory role of ncRNAs in regulating the various mediators of NLRP3 inflammasome pathway including TLR4, NF-kB, NLRP3, and caspase 1. We also discussed the importance of NLRP3 inflammasome pathway-related ncRNAs as a diagnostic biomarker in atherosclerosis and current therapeutics in the modulation of NLRP3 inflammasome in atherosclerosis. Finally, we speak about the limitations and future prospects of ncRNAs in regulating inflammatory atherosclerosis via the NLRP3 inflammasome pathway.

NT-proBNP Levels Influence the Prognostic Value of Mineral Metabolism Biomarkers in Coronary Artery Disease. J Clin Med 2022; 11:jcm11144153. Abstract
Background. Mineral metabolism (MM) system and N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide (NT-ProBNP) have been shown to add prognostic value in patients with stable coronary artery disease (SCAD). However, the influence of NT-ProBNP on the prognostic role of MM in patients with SCAD has not been shown yet. The objective of this study is to assess the influence of NT-ProBNP on the prognostic role of MM markers in patients with SCAD. Methods: We analyzed the prognostic value of MM markers (parathormone (PTH), klotho, phosphate, calcidiol (25-hydroxyvitamin D3), and fibroblast growth factor-23) in 964 patients with SCAD and NT-ProBNP > 125 pg/mL vs. patient with NT-ProBNP ≤ 125 pg/mL included in five hospitals in Spain. The main outcome was the combination of death, heart failure, and ischemic events (any acute coronary syndrome, ischemic stroke, or transient ischemic attack). Results: A total of 622 patients had NT-proBNP > 125 pg/mL and 342 patients had NT-ProBNP ≤ 125 pg/mL. The median follow-up was 5.1 years. In the group of NT-proBNP > 125 pg/mL, the patients were older, and there were more females and smokers than in the group of patients with normal NT-proBNP. Additionally, the proportion of patients with hypertension, atrial fibrillation, ejection fraction < 40%, cerebrovascular attack, or prior coronary artery bypass graft was higher in the high NT-proBNP group. In the high NT-proBNP patients, the predictors of poor prognosis were PTH (HR = 1.06 (1.01−1.10), p < 0.001) and NT-proBNP (HR = 1.02 (1.01−1.03), p = 0.011), along with age (HR = 1.039 (1.02−1.06), p < 0.001), prior coronary artery bypass graft (HR = 1.624 (1.02−2.59), p = 0.041), treatment with statins (HR = 0.32 (0.19−0.53), p < 0.001), insulin (HR = 2.49 (1.59−4.09), p < 0.001), angiotensin receptor blockers (HR = 1.73 (1.16−2.56), p = 0.007), nitrates (HR = 1.65 (1.10−2.45), p = 0.014), and proton pump inhibitors (HR = 2.75 (1.74−4.36), p < 0.001). In the NT-proBNP ≤ 125 pg/mL subgroup, poor prognosis predictors were plasma levels of non-high-density lipoprotein (non-HDL) cholesterol (HR = 1.01 (1.00−1.02), p = 0.014) and calcidiol (HR = 0.96 (0.92−0.99), p = 0.045), as well as treatment with verapamil (HR = 11.28 (2.54−50.00), p = 0.001), and dihydropyridines (HR = 3.16 (1.63−6.13), p = 0.001). Conclusion: In patients with SCAD and NT-ProBNP > 125 pg/mL, PTH and NT-ProBNP, which are markers related to ventricular damage, are predictors of poor outcome. In the subgroup of patients with NT-ProBNP ≤ 125 pgm/L, calcidiol and non-HDL cholesterol, which are more related to vascular damage, are the independent predictors of poor outcome. Then, in patients with SCAD, baseline NT-ProBNP may influence the type of biomarker that is effective in risk prediction.

Abstract
As a major cause of deaths in developed countries, cardiovascular disease (CVD) has been a big burden for human health systems. Its early and rapid detection is crucial to efficiently apply appropriate on time therapy and to ultimately reduce the associated mortality rate. Aptamers, known as single-stranded DNA/RNA or oligonucleotides containing receptors and/or catalytic properties, have been widely employed in biodetection platforms due to their beneficial properties. Like antibodies, aptamers have served as artificial target receptors in affinity biosensors. Currently, advanced biosensors with improved sensitivity and specificity are fabricated by the synergistic combination of aptamers and diverse nanomaterials. Herein, we review the current development and applications of nanomaterial-based aptasensors for the recognition of CVD biomarkers with special emphasis on electrochemical and optical technologies. The performance of aptasensors has been assessed further in terms of key quality assurance metrics along with discussions on recent technologies developed for the amplification of signals with enhanced portability.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are the leading cause of death and disability worldwide. The aim of this study was to assess the association and diagnostic value of a novel uric acid index (UA index) to cardiovascular risk (CVR). DESIGN and Methods: An analytical cross-sectional study was performed. We analyzed data from the Plan for Prevention and Surveillance of Communicable and Non-Communicable Diseases at the Hospital de Huaycan, Peru. The QRISK model was used to measure the CVR. Stepwise regression models were performed to determine significant factors to predict CVR and formulate the UA index, then the association of UA index and high CVR was evaluated by Poisson regression models, and the diagnostic accuracy was verified through ROC curves. RESULTS In total 291 participants (206 women and 85 men) were analyzed. The correlation between UA index to CVR was stronger (R 2 :0.31, p < 0.001) than uric acid (UA) alone (R 2 :0.19, p < 0.001), and the contribution of UA was stronger than triglycerides or glucose in the stepwise regression model. In the Poisson models, the UA index adjusted model (PRa: 1.58, CI95% 1.11-2.24) presented significant independent association to CVR. The diagnostic accuracy was similar in men (cut-off: 10.8, AUC:0.81; 0.75-0.87) and women (cut-off: 10.0; AUC: 0.77, 0.71-0.84). CONCLUSION UA index presented a good diagnostic accuracy and independent significant association to high CVR in adults from Peru. This marker can be used to assess CVR and follow therapeutic progress in primary health care.

Abstract
This study examines the use of a conductive carbon fiber to construct a flexible biosensing platform for monitoring biomarkers in sweat. Cortisol was chosen as a model analyte. Functionalization of the conductive carbon yarn (CCY) with ellipsoidal Fe2O3 has been performed to immobilize the antibodies specific to cortisol. 1-Ethyl-3-(3-dimethylaminopropyl) carbodiimide (EDC) and N-Hydroxysuccinimide (NHS) chemistry has been used to immobilize the antibodies onto the Fe2O3 modified CCY. Crystallinity, structure, morphology, flexibility, surface area, and elemental analysis were studied using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), Raman spectroscopy, Field emission scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (FE-SEM/EDS) and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) analysis. Mechanical properties of the fiber such as tensile strength, young’s modulus have also been investigated. Under optimal parameters, the fabric sensor exhibited a good linearity (r2 = 0.998) for wide a linear range from 1 fg to 1 μg with a detection limit of 0.005 fg/mL for the sensitive detection of cortisol. Repeatability, reliability, reproducibility, and anti-interference properties of the current sensor have been investigated. Detection of cortisol levels in human sweat samples has also been investigated and the results were validated with commercial chemiluminescence immunoassay (CLIA) method.

Abstract
Early diagnosis of cardiovascular disease (CVD) is critically important for successful treatment and recovery of patients. At present, detection of CVD at early stages of its progression becomes a major issue for world health. The nanoscale electrochemical biosensors exhibit diverse outstanding properties, rendering them extremely suitable for the determination of CVD biomarkers at very low concentrations in biological fluids. The unique advantages offered by electrochemical biosensors in terms of sensitivity and stability imparted by nanostructuring the electrode surface together with high affinity and selectivity of bioreceptors have led to the development of new electrochemical biosensing strategies that have introduced as interesting alternatives to conventional methodologies for clinical diagnostics of CVD. This review provides an updated overview of selected examples during the period 2005-2018 involving electrochemical biosensing approaches and signal amplification strategies based on nanomaterials, which have been applied for determination of CVD biomarkers. The studied CVD biomarkers include AXL receptor tyrosine kinase, apolipoproteins, cholesterol, C-reactive protein (CRP), D-dimer, fibrinogen (Fib), glucose, insulin, interleukins, lipoproteins, myoglobin, N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP), tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) and troponins (Tns) on electrochemical transduction format. Identification of new specific CVD biomarkers, multiplex bioassay for the simultaneous determination of biomarkers, emergence of microfluidic biosensors, real-time analysis of biomarkers and point of care validation with high sensitivity and selectivity are the major challenges for future research.

Abstract
Burn patients suffer from immunological dysfunction for which there are currently no successful interventions. Similar to previous observations, we find that burn shock patients (≥15% Total Burn Surface Area (TBSA) injury) have elevated levels of the innate immune cytokines Interleukin-6 (IL-6) and Monocyte Chemoattractant Protein-1 (MCP-1)/CC-motif Chemokine Ligand 2(CCL2) early after hospital admission (0–48 Hours Post-hospital Admission (HPA). Functional immune assays with patient Peripheral Blood Mononuclear Cells (PBMCs) revealed that burn shock patients (≥15% TBSA) produced elevated levels of MCP-1/CCL2 after innate immune stimulation ex vivo relative to mild burn patients. Interestingly, treatment of patient PBMCs with the Nuclear Factor-Erythroid-2-Related Factor 2 (NRF2) agonist, CDDO-Me(bardoxolone methyl), reduced MCP-1 production but not IL-6 or Interleukin-10 (IL-10) secretion. In enriched monocytes from healthy donors, CDDO-Me(bardoxolone methyl) also reduced LPS-induced MCP1/CCL2 production but did not alter IL-6 or IL-10 secretion. Similar immunomodulatory effects were observed with Compound 7, which activates the NRF2 pathway through a different and non-covalent Mechanism Of Action (MOA). Hence, our findings with CDDO-Me(bardoxolone methyl) and Compound 7 are likely to reflect a generalizable aspect of NRF2 activation. These observed effects were not specific to LPS-induced immune responses, as NRF2 activation also reduced MCP-1/CCL2 production after stimulation with IL-6. Pharmacological NRF2 activation reduced Mcp-1/Ccl2 transcript accumulation without inhibiting either Il-6 or Il-10 transcript levels. Hence, we describe a novel aspect of NRF2 activation that may contribute to the beneficial effects of NRF2 agonists during disease. Our work also demonstrates that the NRF2 pathway is retained and can be modulated to regulate important immunomodulatory functions in burn patient immune cells.

Abstract
The purpose of this review is to analyze the biochemical progression of atherosclerotic plaque and its association with diet and diabetes. This study shows the scientific evidence of demonstrating that diabetic patients present high levels of fatty acids like palmitic acid and linoleic acid in their atheroma plaques in comparison with non-diabetic patients. This study also establishes how patients with diabetes mellitus have a higher prevalence of atherosclerotic heart diseases in the form of Coronary Thrombosis and have different anatomopathological appearance like higher necrotic core and thin fibrotic layer than the general population. Furthermore this review describes the different anatomopathological appearance and cellular changes involved in the formation of these plaques and how diet can affect the development of these plaques.

Abstract
Cardiovascular disease (CD) and peripheral vascular disease (PVD) are leading causes of mortality and morbidity in western countries and also responsible of a huge burden in terms of disability, functional decline, and healthcare costs. Biomarkers are measurable biological elements that reflect particular physiological or pathological states or predisposition towards diseases and they are currently widely studied in medicine and especially in CD. In this context, biomarkers can also be used to assess the severity or the evolution of several diseases, as well as the effectiveness of particular therapies. Genomics, transcriptomics, and proteomics have opened new windows on disease phenomena and may permit in the next future an effective development of novel diagnostic and prognostic medicine in order to better prevent or treat CD. This review will consider the current evidence of novel biomarkers with clear implications in the improvement of risk assessment, prevention strategies, and medical decision making in the field of CD.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to evaluate the prognostic value of soluble CD40 ligand (sCD40L) in patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) undergoing a primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). BACKGROUND The prognostic value of sCD40L has been documented in patients with acute coronary syndrome; however, its value in acute STEMI remains unclear. MATERIALS AND METHODS We prospectively enrolled 499 consecutive STEMI patients (397 men, 102 women) undergoing primary PCI. The study population was divided into tertiles on the basis of admission sCD40L values. The high sCD40L group (n=168) included patients with a value in the third tertile (≥0.947 mg/l) and the low sCD40L group (n=331) included patients with a value in the lower two tertiles (<0.947 mg/l). Clinical characteristics and in-hospital and 1-year primary PCI outcomes were analyzed. RESULTS The patients in the high sCD40L group were older (mean age 57.3±12.7 vs. 54.8±11.9, P=0.029). Higher in-hospital and 1-year all-cause mortality rates were observed in the high sCD40L group (7.7 vs. 3.3%, P=0.029; 16.1 vs. 4.8%, P<0.001, respectively). The results of Cox multivariate analysis indicated that a high sCD40L value at admission (>0.947 mg/l) is a powerful independent predictor of 1-year all-cause mortality (odds ratio: 3.68; 95% confidence interval: 1.54-8.77; P=0.003). CONCLUSION The results of this study suggest that a high sCD40L level at admission is associated with increased in-hospital and 1-year all-cause mortality rates in patients with STEMI undergoing primary PCI.

Abstract
The vital importance of early and accurate diagnosis of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) to prevent the irreversible damage or even death of patients has driven the development of biosensor devices for detection and quantification of cardiac biomarkers. Electrochemical biosensors offer rapid sensing, low cost, portability and ease of use. Over the past few years, nanotechnology has contributed to a tremendous improvement in the sensitivity of biosensors. In this review, the authors summarise the state-of-the-art of the application of one particular type of nanostructured material, i.e. nanofibres, for use in electrochemical biosensors for the ultrasensitive detection of cardiac biomarkers. A new way of classifying the nanofibre-based electrochemical biosensors according to the electrical conductance and the type of nanofibres is presented. Some key data from each article reviewed are highlighted, including the mechanism of detection, experimental conditions and the response range of the biosensor. The primary aim of this review is to emphasise the prospects for nanofibres for the future development of biosensors in diagnosis of CVDs as well as considering how to improve their characteristics for application in medicine.

Abstract
BACKGROUND One of the greatest challenges in cardiovascular medicine is to define the best tools for performing an accurate risk stratification for the recurrence of ischemic events in acute coronary syndrome (ACS) patients. METHODS We followed 65 ACS patients enrolled in a previous pilot study for 2 years after being discharged, focusing on the occurrence of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE). The relationship between serum tryptase levels on admission, SYNergy between percutaneous coronary intervention with the TAXUS drug-eluting stent and the cardiac surgery score (SX-score), cardiovascular complexity and MACE at 2 years follow-up were analyzed. RESULTS The ACS population was divided in two groups: patients with MACE (n = 23) and patients without MACE (n = 42). The tryptase measurement at admission (T0) and at discharge (T3) and SX-score were higher in patients who experienced MACE than in those without (p = 0.0001, p < 0.0001 and p = 0.006, respectively). Conversely, we found no significant association between MACE and C-reactive protein (CRP), and between MACE and maximum level of high-sensitivity troponin (hs-Tn) values. Among all patients with MACE, 96% belonged to the group that presented with cardiovascular complexity at the beginning of ACS index admission (p < 0.0001). The predictive accuracy of serum tryptase for MACE at follow up set at the cut-off point of 4.95 ng/ml at T0 and of 5.2 ng/ml at T3. Interestingly, patients with both the above cut-off tryptase values at T0 and at T3 presented a 1320% increase in the odds of developing MACE (p < 0.0001). CONCLUSION In ACS patients, serum tryptase measured during index admission is significantly correlated to the development of MACE up to 2 years, demonstrating a possible long-term prognostic role of this biomarker.

Abstract
Relationship between hyperfibrinogenemia (HF), oxidative stress, and atherogenesis was established. Effect of atorvastatin (Ator) was assessed. Wistar male (6 months) rats were studied: Ctr, control, without HF induction; Ctr-Ator, without HF treated with atorvastatin; AI, atherogenesis induced, and AI-Ator, atherogenesis induced and treated with atorvastatin. Atherogenesis was induced by daily adrenaline injection (0.1 mL/day/rat) for 90 days; treatment started 15 days after induction. Fibrinogen (mg/dL) and nitric oxide (NO) were measured in plasma (mM) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) (U/mL) in red cell lysate by spectrophotometry. Slices of aorta were analyzed by electron microscopy (EM). ANOVA and chi-square test were used; P < 0.05 was established. There were no significant differences between Ctr and Ctr-Atorv in fibrinogen, NO, and SOD values. Comparing Ctr with AI an increase of fibrinogen is observed (P < 0.001), but it decreased after administration of atorvastatin in AI-Ator (P < 0.001). NO diminished in AI relative to Ctr and increased in AI-Ator (P < 0.001). SOD showed an increase in AI and AI-Ator compared to Ctr (P < 0.001). EM revealed expansion of intermembrane space and disorganization of crests in AI. In AI-Ator mitochondrial areas and diameters were similar to control. Atorvastatin normalizes HF, stabilizes NO, increases SOD, and produces a partial regression of mitochondrial lesions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hispanics have a high rate of diabetes that exposes them to an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. We hypothesized that many of the pathophysiological mechanisms that cause atherosclerotic disease may be present in young Hispanics who do not have clinical diabetes but are at increased risk of developing it. METHODS We studied 36 young Hispanic adults without diabetes (ages 18-40). Seventeen participants were at increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes given by overweight and a family history of diabetes on one or both parents (at risk group). Nineteen participants with normal body-mass index and no parental history of diabetes constituted the control group. We measured and compared plasma markers of endothelial dysfunction, disturbed coagulation and fibrinolysis, subclinical inflammation and adipose tissue dysfunction in the at risk and control groups. RESULTS Participants at risk of diabetes were more insulin-resistant according to different indicators, and had significantly higher levels of soluble intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (sICAM-1), tissue plasminogen activator (tPA), inhibitor of plasminogen activator-1 (PAi-1), high sensitivity C-reactive protein and free fatty acids, signaling the presence of multiple proatherogenic alterations despite the absence of overt diabetes. Levels of the prothrombotic molecule PAi-1 were most elevated in participants who were not only at risk of diabetes by the study definition, but also abdominally obese. CONCLUSIONS Young adult Hispanics at risk of type 2 diabetes but without overt disease already bear considerably high levels of markers reflecting processes that lead to the development of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease.

Abstract
Atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease remains the major cause of premature death in developed and developing countries. Nevertheless, surveys show that most patients still do not achieve the lifestyles, risk factor levels, and therapeutic targets recommended in primary and secondary prevention. Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the effects of Qushuanling Capsule ( QSLC) on thrombus formation and platelet aggregation in rats. METHODS Arteriovenous bypass, venous thrombosis, and middle cerebral artery thrombosis models were used in rats to investigate the anti-thrombotic effects of QSLC, a compound of nine Chinese herbs. The platelet aggregation induced by adenosine diphosphate (ADP), thrombin or arachidonic acid (AA), as well as the contents of thromboxane B(2) (TXB(2)) and 6-keto-prostaglandin F1α (6-keto-PGF1α) in rat plasma and aortic walls, were determined to investigate the possible mechanisms of the anti-thrombotic effects of QSLC. RESULTS After oral administration with QSLC for 7 days, arteriovenous bypass thrombosis was obviously suppressed compared with the model group, venous thrombosis was also obviously suppressed, rat behaviors were obviously improved, and brain infarct size as well as water content were also reduced. The platelet aggregation induced by ADP or thrombin was inhibited by QSLC, but the drug had no effect on AA-induced platelet aggregation and content of TXB(2) and 6-keto-PGF1α in plasma and the aortic wall. CONCLUSION These results suggest that QSLC can be used in the prevention and treatment of thrombotic diseases, and that its mechanism of action may be related to inhibition of platelet aggregation.

Abstract
This review focuses on the neurobiology of integrins, pathophysiological roles of integrins in neuroplasticity and nervous system disorders, and therapeutic implications of integrins as potential drug targets and possible delivery pathways. Neuroplasticity is a central phenomenon in many neurological conditions such as seizures, trauma, and traumatic brain injury. During the course of many brain diseases, in addition to intracellular compartment changes, alterations in non-cell compartments such as extracellular matrix (ECM) are recognized as an essential process in forming and reorganizing neural connections. Integrins are heterodimeric transmembrane receptors that mediate cell-ECM and cell-cell adhesion events. Although the mechanisms of neuroplasticity remain unclear, it has been suggested that integrins undergo plasticity including clustering through interactions with ECM proteins, modulating ion channels, intracellular Ca(2+) and protein kinase signaling, and reorganization of cytoskeletal filaments. As cell surface receptors, integrins are central to the pathophysiology of many brain diseases, such as epilepsy, and are potential targets for the development of new drugs for neurological disorders.

Abstract
Heat shock proteins (HSP) are a family of proteins induced in cells exposed to different insults. This induction of HSPs allows cells to survive stress conditions. Mammalian HSPs have been classified into six families according to their molecular size: HSP100, HSP90, HSP70, HSP60, HSP40 and small HSPs (15 to 30kDa) including HSP27. These proteins act as molecular chaperones either helping in the refolding of misfolded proteins or assisting in their elimination if they become irreversibly damaged. In recent years, proteomic studies have characterized several different HSPs in various tumor types which may be putative clinical biomarkers or molecular targets for cancer therapy. This has led to the development of a series of molecules capable of inhibiting HSPs. Numerous studies speculated that over-expression of HSP is in part responsible for resistance to many anti-tumor agents and chemotherapeutics. Hence, from a pharmacological point of view, the co-administration of HSP inhibitors together with other anti-tumor agents is of major importance in overcoming therapeutic resistance. In this review, we provide an overview of the current status of HSPs in autoimmune, cardiovascular, and neurodegenerative diseases with special emphasis on cancer.

Abstract
In this study, a highly sensitive and label-free multianalyte capacitive immunosensor was developed based on gold interdigitated electrodes (GID) capacitor arrays to detect a panel of disease biomarkers. C-reactive protein (CRP), TNFalpha, and IL6 have strong and consistent relationships between markers of inflammation and future cardiovascular risk (CVR) events. Early detection of a panel of biomarkers for a disease could enable accurate prediction of a disease risk. The detection of protein biomarkers was based on relative change in capacitive/dielectric properties. Two different lab-on-a-chip formats were employed for multiple biomarker detection on GID-capacitors. In format I, capacitor arrays were immobilized with pure forms of anti-CRP, -TNFalpha, and -IL6 antibodies in which each capacitor array contained a different immobilized antibody. Here, the CRP and IL6 were detected in the range 25 pg/ml to 25 ng/ml and 25 pg/ml to 1 ng/ml for TNFalpha in format I. Sensitive detection was achieved with chips co-immobilized (diluted) with equimolar mixtures of anti-CRP, -IL6, and -TNFalpha antibodies (format II) in which all capacitors in an array were identical and tested for biomarkers with sequential incubation. The resulting response to CRP, IL6, and TNFalpha in format II for all biomarkers was found to be within 25 pg/ml to 25 ng/ml range. The capacitive biosensor for panels of inflammation and CVR markers show significant clinical value and provide great potential for detection of biomarker panel in suspected subjects for early diagnosis.
