Comparison of the volatile constituents in cold-pressed bergamot oil and a volatile oil isolated by vacuum distillation

The vacuum distillation of bergamot peels furnishes a high-quality essential oil that is totally bergapten-free. This oil was compared with that produced by distillation of cold-pressed oils and those commercially available. The oil obtained by vacuum distillation of the bergamot vegetable matrix shows a composition quite similar to that of the cold-pressed oil. It also displays qualitative characteristics that are superior with respect to those normally observed for essential oils isolated by distillation of cold-pressed oils. Oils isolated by the method presented here can constitute ideal candidates in producing foods, for example, Earl Grey tea, and cosmetic preparations.

A method for quantitative determination of furanocoumarins in capsules and tablets of phytochemical preparations

A method for sample preparation and analysis by high-performance liquid chromatography with UV detection (HPLC-UV) was developed for analysis of psoralen, bergapten and 5-[3-(4,5-dihydro-5,5-dimethyl-4-oxo-2-furanyl)-butoxy]-7H-furo[3-2-g][1]benzopyran-7-one in capsules and tablets employed in Brazil for certain illnesses. The linearity, accuracy, the inter- and intra-day precision of the procedure were evaluated. Analytical curves for furanocoumarins were linear in the range of 1.0-50.0 microg/ml. The recoveries of the furanocoumarins in the products analyzed were 97.3-99.5%, and the percent coefficient of variation for the quantitative analysis of the furanocoumarins in the analyses was under 5%. For inter-equipment study gas chromatography (GC) was employed.

Quantitative Determination of Jatrophone in "Cachaca" Prepared with Jatropha elliptica

A method for sample preparation and analysis by high performance liquid chromatography with UV detection (HPLC-UV) was developed for analysis of jatrophone in "cachaça" prepared with Jatropha elliptica, administered orally, employed in Brazil for the treatment of venomous snake bites. The linearity, accuracy, precision of the procedure was evaluated. Analytical curve for jatrophone was linear in the range of 16.24-81.20 microg ml(-1). The recovery of the jatrophone in the samples analyzed was 98.99-99.89%. The percent coefficient of variation for the quantitative analysis of the "cachaça" in the analyses was under 2%.

A method for fast determination of psoralens in oral solutions of phytomedicines using liquid chromatography

A method for sample preparation and analysis by high performance liquid chromatography with UV detection (HPLC-UV) has been developed for routine analysis of psoralen and bergapten, photosensitizing compounds, in oral solutions of phytomedicines employed in Brazil for some illnesses. The linearity, accuracy, the inter- and intra-day precision of the procedure were evaluated. Calibration curves for psoralen and bergapten were linear in the range of 1.0-600.0 microg ml(-1) and 1.0-400.0 microg ml(-1) respectively. The recoveries of the psoralens in the oral solutions analysed were 94.43-99.97%. The percentage coefficient of variation (CV) of the quantitative analysis of the psoralens in the products analysis was within 5%. In inter-equipment study was employed gas chromatography-flame ionization (CG-FID) detection.

Chemical and biological diversity of Bergamot (Citrus bergamia) in relation to environmental factors

Oil of bergamot is receiving renewed popularity in aromatherapy. The biovariability of Citrus bergamia grown wild in Calabria (Italy) was investigated as far as chemical markers (linalool, linalyl acetate and bergapten) content and antioxidant and antifungal activities of the methanolic extracts. The average content in the markers presents slight variations with the altitude and more evident changes with the latitude of the areas of plant collection.
