Bio-derived carbon-based materials for sustainable environmental remediation and wastewater treatment

Biosynthesized nanocomposites, particularly those incorporating carbon-based materials, exhibit exceptional tunability and multifunctionality, surpassing the capabilities of conventional materials in these aspects. Developing practical solutions is critical to address environmental toxins from pharmaceuticals, heavy metals, pesticides, and dyes. Biomass waste is a readily available carbon source, which emerges as a promising material for producing biochar due to its inherent advantages: abundance, low cost, and environmentally friendly nature. This distribution mainly uses carbon-based materials (CBMs) and biomass waste in wastewater treatment. This review paper investigates several CBM types, including carbon aerogels, nanotubes, graphene, and activated carbon. The development of bio-derived carbon-based nanomaterials are discussed, along with the properties and composition of carbon materials derived from biomass waste and various cycles, such as photodegradation, adsorption, and high-level oxidation processes for natural remediation. In conclusion, this review examines the challenges associated with biochar utilization, including cost, recovery, and practical implementation.

CuNi alloy anchored on dual-substrate TiOx/N-doped carbon nanofibers as a bifunctional electrocatalyst for rechargeable zinc-air batteries

Development of non-noble metal-based electrocatalysts to enhance the performance of zinc-air batteries (ZABs) is of great significance, but it remains a formidable challenge due to their poor stability and activity. Herein, a bifunctional CuNi-TiOx/NCNFS electrocatalyst, featuring with electron-rich copper-nickel (CuNi) alloy nanoparticles anchored on titanium oxide/N-doped carbon nanofibers (TiOx/NCNFS), is constructed by a dual-substrate loading strategy. The introduction of TiOx has led to a significant increase in the stability of the dual-substrate. The strong electronic interaction between CuNi and TiOx strengthens the anchoring of active metal sites, thus accelerating the electron transfer. Theoretical calculations unclose that NCNFS can regulate the charge distribution of TiOx, inducing the charge transfer from NCNFS → TiOx → CuNi, thereby reducing the d-band center of Cu and Ni, which is beneficial to the desorption of intermediate oxide species of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Therefore, CuNi-TiOx/NCNFS delivers a remarkable bifunctional performance with a low OER overpotential of 258 mV at 10 mA cm-2 and an ORR half-wave potential of 0.85  V. When assembled into ZABs, CuNi-TiOx/NCNFS shows a low potential gap of 0.64 V, a higher power density of 149.6 mW cm-2 at 330 mA cm-2, and an outstanding stability for 250 h at 5mA cm-2. This study provides a novel approach by constructing dual-substrate to tune the electronic structure of active metal sites for efficient rechargeable ZABs.

Utilizing triethylenetetramine-functionalized MIP-206 for highly efficient removal of Pb(II) from wastewater

The global concern over heavy metal pollution necessitates urgent measures to safeguard human health and the environment. This study focuses on employing triethylenetetramine (TETA)-functionalized MIP-206-OH (TMIP-206) as an effective adsorbent for removing Pb(II) from wastewater. TMIP-206 was synthesized via a hydrothermal method followed by functionalization with TETA. Kinetic studies demonstrate that lead removal on TMIP-206 conforms to the pseudo-second-order model, indicating an efficient removal process. Experimental results reveal that TMIP-206 aligns with the Langmuir isotherm, exhibiting a maximum removal capacity of 267.15 mg/g for lead ions. The sorption efficiency of TMIP-206 for Pb ions remains stable across six cycles, with a reduction of less than 15%. Optimal adsorption performance is observed at a pH of 6. These findings underscore the potential of TMIP-206 as an alternative for adsorbing Pb(II) from aqueous environments, addressing the global challenge of heavy metal pollution. Future research should explore the scalability and long-term stability of TMIP-206-based adsorbents to enhance their practical applicability in diverse environmental contexts and contribute to broader strategies for mitigating heavy metal contamination.

Nanosized tubular clay minerals as inorganic nanoreactors for energy and environmental applications: A review to fill current knowledge gaps

Modern society pays further and further attention to environmental protection and the promotion of sustainable energy solutions. Heterogeneous photocatalysis is widely recognized as one of the most economically viable and ecologically sound technologies to combat environmental pollution and the global energy crisis. One challenge is finding a suitable photocatalytic material for an efficient process. Inorganic nanotubes have garnered attention as potential candidates due to their optoelectronic properties, which differ from their bulk equivalents. Among them, clay nanotubes (halloysite, imogolite, and chrysotile) are attracting renewed interest for photocatalysis applications thanks to their low production costs, their unique physical and chemical properties, and the possibility to functionalize or dope their structure to enhance charge-carriers separation into their structure. In this review, we provide new insights into the potential of these inorganic nanotubes in photocatalysis. We first discuss the structural and morphological features of clay nanotubes. Applications of photocatalysts based on clay nanotubes across a range of photocatalytic reactions, including the decomposition of organic pollutants, elimination of NOx, production of hydrogen, and disinfection of bacteria, are discussed. Finally, we highlight the obstacles and outline potential avenues for advancing the current photocatalytic system based on clay nanotubes. Our aim is that this review can offer researchers new opportunities to advance further research in the field of clay nanotubes-based photocatalysis with other vital applications in the future.

Carbon Nanomaterials for Biomedical Applications: Progress and Outlook

Recent developments in nanoscale materials have found extensive use in various fields, especially in the biomedical industry. Several substantial obstacles must be overcome, particularly those related to nanostructured materials in biomedicine, before they can be used in therapeutic applications. Significant concerns in biomedicine include biological processes, adaptability, toxic effects, and nano-biointerfacial properties. Biomedical researchers have difficulty choosing suitable materials for drug carriers, cancer treatment, and antiviral uses. Carbon nanomaterials are among the various nanoparticle forms that are continually receiving interest for biomedical applications. They are suitable materials owing to their distinctive physical and chemical properties, such as electrical, high-temperature, mechanical, and optical diversification. An individualized, controlled, dependable, low-carcinogenic, target-specific drug delivery system can diagnose and treat infections in biomedical applications. The variety of carbon materials at the nanoscale is remarkable. Allotropes and other forms of the same element, carbon, are represented in nanoscale dimensions. These show promise for a wide range of applications. Carbon nanostructured materials with exceptional mechanical, electrical, and thermal properties include graphene and carbon nanotubes. They can potentially revolutionize industries, including electronics, energy, and medicine. Ongoing investigation and expansion efforts continue to unlock possibilities for these materials, making them a key player in shaping the future of advanced technology. Carbon nanostructured materials explore the potential positive effects of reducing the greenhouse effect. The current state of nanostructured materials in the biomedical sector is covered in this review, along with their synthesis techniques and potential uses.

Electrochemical Regeneration of Highly Stable and Sustainable Cellulose/Graphene Adsorbent Saturated with Dissolved Organic Dye

Electrochemical regeneration of adsorbents presents a cost-effective and environmentally friendly approach. Yet, its application to 3D structured adsorbents such as cellulose/graphene-based aerogels remains largely unexplored. This study introduces a method for producing these aerogels, highlighting their significant adsorption capacity for dissolved organic pollutants and resilience during electrochemical regeneration. By adjusting the ratio of hydrophobized cellulose nanofibers to graphene, the aerogels demonstrate a tunable adsorption capacity, ranging from 56 to 228 mg/g. Hydrophobization using oleic acid is vital for maintaining the aerogels' structural stability in water. Notably, the aerogels maintain structural integrity and efficiency over at least 18 electrochemical regeneration cycles, underscoring their potential for long-term environmental applications. The increase in adsorption capacity observed after regeneration cycles, approximately 10-20% by the fifth cycle, is attributed to electrochemical surface roughening and the creation of new adsorption sites. The tunability and durability of these aerogels offer a sustainable solution for adsorption with electrochemical regeneration technology.

Role of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in transgenic plant development

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are nanostructures, allotropes of carbon which are made up of graphene sheets wrapped around it forming cylindrical structures. Having unique properties such as small size, larger surface area is useful in delivering DNA into mammalian cells as well. Modifications in CNTs can make nucleic acids adhere to them even more efficiently. Also, MWCNTs are crucial in delivery DNA into the cytoplasm. Based on other methods, the CNTs-DNA are a preferred choice and the inclination toward double-stranded DNA is used over single-stranded DNA in gene delivery shows effective results. The only downside of CNTs is that they are hydrophobic and are difficult to form an aqueous solution, thus limiting their applicability. A cohesive effort to assess the suitability and disparity of carbon nanotubes for water treatment

Population growth, industrialization, and the extensive use of chemicals in daily life have all contributed to an increase in waste generation and an intensified release of organic pollutants into the aquatic environment. To ensure the quality of water (including natural resources), the removal of these pollutants from wastewater has become a challenging task for scientific community. Conventional physical, chemical, and biological treatment methods are commonly used in combinations and are not very effective. Recently, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) emerged as the most reliable and adaptable choice for efficient water treatment due to their extraordinary material properties appearing as a single-step solution for water treatment. High surface area, exceptional porosities, hollow and layered structures, and ease of chemical activation and functionalization are some properties which makes it excellent adsorption material. Hence, this review paper discusses the recent advances in the synthesis, purification, and functionalization of CNTs for water and wastewater treatment. In addition, this study also also provides a quick overview of CNTs-based advance technologies employed in water treatment and carefully assesses the benefits versus risks during large-scale water treatment. Furthermore, it concludes that identified risks to the environment and human health cannot be easily ignored and strict regulatory requirements are a must for producing low-cost innoxious CNTs.

Carbon nanotube-wastewater treatment nexus: Where are we heading to?

Water treatment is crucial in solving the rising people's appetite for water and global water shortages. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have considerable promise for water treatment because of their adjustable and distinctive arbitrary, physical, as well as chemical characteristics. This illustrates the benefits and risks of integrating CNT into the traditional water treatment resource. Due to their outstanding adsorbent ability and chemical and mechanical properties, CNTs have gained global consideration in environmental applications. The desalination and extraction capability of CNT were improved due to chemical or physical modifications in pure CNTs by various functional groups. The CNT-based composites have many benefits, such as antifouling performance, high selectivity, and increased water permeability. Nevertheless, their full-scale implementations are still constrained by their high costs. Functionalized CNTs and their promising nanocomposites to eliminate contaminants are advised for marketing and extensive water/wastewater treatment.

Structural and functional perspectives of carbon filter media in constructed wetlands for pollutants abatement from wastewater

Constructed wetlands (CWs) represent the most viable artificial wastewater treatment system that works on the principles of natural wetlands. Filter media are integrally linked to CWs and have substantial impacts on their performance for pollutant removal. Carbon-derived substrates have been in the spotlight for decades due to their abundance, sustainability, reusability, and potential to treat complex contaminants. However, the efficiency and feasibility of carbon substrates have not been fully explored, and there are only a few studies that have rigorously analyzed their performance for wastewater treatment. This critical synthesis of the literature review offers comprehensive insights into the utilization of carbon-derived substrates in the context of pollutant removal, intending to enhance the efficiency and sustainability of CWs. It also compares several carbon-based substrates with non-carbon substrates with respect to physiochemical properties, pollutant removal efficiency, and cost-benefit analysis. Furthermore, it addresses the concerns and possible remedies about carbon filtration materials such as configuration, clogging minimization, modification, and reusability to improve the efficacy of substrates and CWs. Recommendations made to address these challenges include pretreatment of wastewater, use of a substrate with smaller pore size, incorporation of multiple filter media, the introduction of earthworms, and cultivation of plants. A current scientific scenario has been presented for identifying the research gaps to investigate the functional mechanisms of modified carbon substrates and their interaction with other CW components.

Carbon Nanofiber Growth Rates on NiCu Catalysts: Quantitative Coupling of Macroscopic and Nanoscale In Situ Studies

Since recently, gas-cell transmission electron microscopy allows for direct, nanoscale imaging of catalysts during reaction. However, often systems are too perturbed by the imaging conditions to be relevant for real-life catalyzed conversions. We followed carbon nanofiber growth from NiCu-catalyzed methane decomposition under working conditions (550 °C, 1 bar of 5% H2, 45% CH4, and 50% Ar), directly comparing the time-resolved overall carbon growth rates in a reactor (measured gravimetrically) and nanometer-scale carbon growth observations (by electron microscopy). Good quantitative agreement in time-dependent growth rates allowed for validation of the electron microscopy measurements and detailed insight into the contribution of individual catalyst nanoparticles in these inherently heterogeneous catalysts to the overall carbon growth. The smallest particles did not contribute significantly to carbon growth, while larger particles (8-16 nm) exhibited high carbon growth rates but deactivated quickly. Even larger particles grew carbon slowly without significant deactivation. This methodology paves the way to understanding macroscopic rates of catalyzed reactions based on nanoscale in situ observations.

A new capacity of gut microbiota: Fermentation of engineered inorganic carbon nanomaterials into endogenous organic metabolites

Carbon-based nanomaterials (CNMs) have recently been found in humans raising a great concern over their adverse roles in the hosts. However, our knowledge of the in vivo behavior and fate of CNMs, especially their biological processes elicited by the gut microbiota, remains poor. Here, we uncovered the integration of CNMs (single-walled carbon nanotubes and graphene oxide) into the endogenous carbon flow through degradation and fermentation, mediated by the gut microbiota of mice using isotope tracing and gene sequencing. As a newly available carbon source for the gut microbiota, microbial fermentation leads to the incorporation of inorganic carbon from the CNMs into organic butyrate through the pyruvate pathway. Furthermore, the butyrate-producing bacteria are identified to show a preference for the CNMs as their favorable source, and excessive butyrate derived from microbial CNMs fermentation further impacts on the function (proliferation and differentiation) of intestinal stem cells in mouse and intestinal organoid models. Collectively, our results unlock the unknown fermentation processes of CNMs in the gut of hosts and underscore an urgent need for assessing the transformation of CNMs and their health risk via the gut-centric physiological and anatomical pathways.

Green composites based on volcanic red algae Cyanidiales, cellulose, and coffee waste biomass modified with magnetic nanoparticles for the removal of methylene blue

In this paper, green nanocomposites based on biomass and superparamagnetic nanoparticles were synthesized and used as adsorbents to remove methylene blue (MB) from water with magnetic separation. The adsorbents were synthesized through the wet co-precipitation technique, in which iron-oxide nanoparticles coated the cores based on coffee, cellulose, and red volcanic algae waste. The procedure resulted in materials that could be easily separated from aqueous solutions with magnets. The morphology and chemical composition of the nanocomposites were characterized by SEM, FT-IR, and XPS methods. The adsorption studies of MB removal with UV-vis spectrometry showed that the adsorption performance of the prepared materials strongly depended on their morphology and the type of the organic adsorbent. The adsorption studies presented the highest effectiveness in neutral pH with only a slight effect on ionic strength. The MB removal undergoes pseudo-second kinetics for all adsorbents. The maximal adsorption capacity for the coffee@Fe₃O₄-2, cellulose@Fe₃O₄-1, and algae@Fe₃O₄-1 is 38.23 mg g^-1, 41.61 mg g^-1, and 48.41 mg g^-1, respectively. The mechanism of MB adsorption follows the Langmuir model using coffee@Fe₃O₄ and cellulose@Fe₃O₄, while for algae@Fe₃O₄ the process fits to the Redlich-Peterson model. The removal efficiency analysis based on UV-vis adsorption spectra revealed that the adsorption effectiveness of the nanocomposites increased as follows: coffee@Fe₃O₄-2 > cellulose@Fe₃O₄-1 > algae@Fe₃O₄-1, demonstrating an MB removal efficiency of up to 90%.

Recent innovation and impacts of nano-based technologies for wastewater treatment on humans: a review

Sustainable wastewater management requires environment-friendly, efficient, and cost-effective methods of water treatment. The ever-growing list of emerging contaminants in municipal wastewater requires advanced, efficient, and cost-effective techniques for its treatment to combat the increasing water demand. The nano-based technologies hold great potential in improving water treatment efficiency and augmenting the water supply. However, the environmental effects of these technologies are still questionable among the public and scientific community. The present review discusses risks to human health due to the use of nano-based technology for the removal of emerging contaminants in water. The discussion will be about the impacts of these technologies on humans. Recommendations about safe and environmentally friendly options for nano-based technology for water treatment have been included. Safest options of nano-based technologies for water treatment and steps to minimize the risk associated with them have also been incorporated in this article. Since all biological systems are different, separate risk analyses should be performed at the environmentally relevant concentration for different durations. There is little/no information on the quantitative impact on humans and requires more understanding. The quantitative measurement of the cellular uptake of nanoparticles is usually difficult. We hope this article will serve its purpose for water researchers, medical researchers, environmentalists, policymakers, and the government.

MWCNT supported V2O5 quantum dot nanoparticles decorated Bi2O3 nanosheets hybrid system: Efficient visible light driven photocatalyst for degradation of ciprofloxacin

A novel composite of multiwall carbon nanotube (MWCNT) supported V₂O₅ quantum dots decorated Bi₂O₃ hybrid was prepared by the simple wet-impregnation method, and the photocatalytic performance of the prepared samples was investigated against the photodegradation of ciprofloxacin (CIP). Herein, different samples of pristine, V₂O₅/Bi₂O₃ and MWCNT@V₂O₅/Bi₂O₃ hybrid photocatalyst were prepared and systematically characterized by various physicochemical techniques. The characterization results demonstrated that the introduction of MWCNT can change the energy band gap of V₂O₅/Bi₂O₃, and the band energies vary with a constituent of MWCNT@V₂O₅/Bi₂O₃ catalyst, in which MWCNT@V₂O₅/Bi₂O₃-5 (0.05 g@0.50 g:0.50 g) has the optimal band gap energy of 2.46 eV. The photocatalytic test demonstrates that the MWCNT@V₂O₅/Bi₂O₃-5 hybrid composites exhibited enhanced photocatalytic activity in CIP degradation compared to that pure and other photocatalyst and its degradation efficiency did not decrease significantly even after five cyclic experiments. The enhanced photocatalytic activity was due to the formation of heterojunction among MWCNT, V₂O₅ and Bi₂O₃, which distinctly improved the separation efficiency of the photogenerated charge carrier, thus increasing the degradation performance. This work gives a new approach to designing an efficient photocatalyst for contaminants degradation.

Polyaniline/Multi Walled Carbon Nanotubes-A Promising Photocatalyst Composite for Reactive Blue 4 Oxidation

For the photocatalytic removal of the Reactive Blue 4 dye from an aqueous stream, new polyaniline/multi walled carbon nanotube nanocomposites (PANI-MWCNTs) were applied as a promising photocatalyst. The PANI-MWCNT nanocomposites were fabricated by aniline oxidation in the presence of MWCNTs using the typical direct oxidation polymerization route. The morphology, the Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra and the UV-Vis absorbance spectra of the fabricated nanocomposites were studied and the attained data confirmed the good interaction between the MWCNTs and PANI matrix. The PANI-MWCNTs nanocomposites were varied according to the wt%, the MWCNTs, which ranged from 0–10 wt% and the corresponding resultant samples are labeled as P-0, P-3, P-5, P-5, P-7 and P-10, respectively. Such composites showed the high potential for the removal of the Reactive Blue 4 dye containing pollutants from wastewater. The starting concentration of the dye pollutants was halved during the first 5 min of UV illumination. The oxidation technique of Reactive Blue 4 over the prepared nanocomposites were processed in a different way and the highest catalytic activity corresponded to P-7. The process reached the complete dye removal in low concentrations of contaminants. The kinetics of the removal followed the pseudo-second order regime which possesses high correlation coefficients with the k₂ in the range of 0.0036–0.1115 L.mg⁻¹.min⁻¹ for the Reactive Blue 4 oxidation. In this regard, the combination of the PANI and MWCNTs showed a superior novel photocatalytic activity in the oxidation of commercial textile dying wastewater, namely Reactive Blue 4. This study is the starting point for future applications on an industrial scale since the successful performances of the PANI-MWCNT on commercial dye oxidation.

Green, Sustainable Synthesis of γ-Fe2O3/MWCNT/Ag Nano-Composites Using the Viscum album Leaf Extract and Waste Car Tire for Removal of Sulfamethazine and Bacteria from Wastewater Streams

Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) decorated with Ag nanoparticles (NPs) are bifunctional adsorbent nanomaterials with antibacterial activity. They can be magnetically recovered from wastewater in case of coupling with γ-Fe₂O₃. In this study, for the first time, an environmentally friendly technique was applied to prepare a nanocomposite (NC) material composed of γ-Fe₂O₃/MWCNT/Ag by using Bridgestone disposable tires and Viscum album leaves extract. γ-Fe₂O₃/MWCNTs/Ag NC was employed for the removal of sulfamethazine (SMT) from aqueous solutions. Under the optimized conditions determined via the Taguchi method, the highest SMT adsorption capacity of the γ-Fe₂O₃/MWCNT/Ag NC was measured to be 47.6 mg/g. The experimental data fitted well with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Langmuir isotherm. The thermodynamic parameters implied that the adsorption process was endothermic. In addition to adsorption of the drug pollutant, the NC demonstrated a superior antibacterial activity against Gram-positive bacteria. The reusability test also showed that over 79% SMT can be removed using γ-Fe₂O₃/MWCNTs/Ag NC even after four adsorption cycles. Taken together, γ-Fe₂O₃/MWCNTs/Ag NC was proven to be a promising antibacterial nano-adsorbent for wastewater treatment.

Recent advances of bismuth titanate based photocatalysts engineering for enhanced organic contaminates oxidation in water: A review

Over more than three decades, the scientific community has been contentiously interested in structuring varying photocatalytic materials with unique properties for appropriate technology transfer. Most of the existing reported photocatalysts in the literature show pros and cons by considering the type of application and working conditions. Bismuth titanate oxides (BTO) are novel photocatalysts that raised recently towards energy and environmental-related applications. Most recent advances to developing bismuth titanate-based photocatalysts for the oxidation of organic pollutants in the water phase were reviewed in this report. To counter the potential drawbacks of BTO materials, i.e., rapid recombination of photoproduced charges, and further promote the photoactivity, most reported approaches were discussed, including creating direct Z-scheme junctions, conventional heterojunctions, metal/non-metal doping, coupling with carbon materials, surface modification and construction of oxygen vacancies. In the end, the review addresses the future trends for better engineering and application of BTO based photocatalysts towards the photodegradation of organic pollutants in water under controlled lab and large scales conditions.

Design of nanomaterials for the removal of per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in water: Strategies, mechanisms, challenges, and opportunities

Due to their persistent and pervasive distribution and their adverse effects on human health, the removal of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) from the environment has been the focus of current research. Recent studies have shown that engineered nanomaterials provide great opportunities for their removal by chemical, physical and electrochemical adsorption methods, or as photo- or electrocatalysts that promote their degradation. This review summarizes and discusses the performance of recently reported nanomaterials towards PFAS removal in water treatment applications. We discuss the performance, mechanisms, and PFAS removal conditions of a variety of nanomaterials, including carbon-based, non-metal, single-metal, and multi-metal nanomaterials. We show that nanotechnology provides significant opportunities for PFAS remediation and further nanomaterial development can provide solutions for the removal of PFAS from the environment. We also provide an overview of the current challenges.

Leachate treatment potential of nanomaterial based assemblies: a systematic review on recent development

Rapid development of the population has brought about a serious problem of waste generation and management. Open dumping and land filling are two of the preferred options for waste management and treatment. As a consequence of this, the accumulation of leachates has become one of the concerns for environmental sustainability. In this regard, various treatment methodologies have been developed in recent decades. Among them, the nanomaterial-based approaches are the emerging ones in the current scenario due to their various unique properties. Furthermore, nanomaterial-based assemblies (i.e., nanomaterials combined with microbes, chemical catalysts, enzymes, and so on) have been introduced as a novel modification for leachate treatment. This work, therefore, has been dedicated to comprehensively reviewing all nanomaterial based leachate treatment techniques. In this regard, the first part of this review will discuss the nano catalyst, nano adsorbent along with their synthesis and mechanistic view of pollutant removal potential. In the second part, the nanomaterial-based microbial conjugates applied in the leachate treatments have been discussed. Apart from this, various other nanomaterial-based methods have been discussed in the third part of the review. Hence this review is providing an insight of all the recent developments pertaining to the nano material based leachate treatment techniques.

Sorption Potential of Different Forms of TiO2 for the Removal of Two Anticancer Drugs from Water

Anticancer drugs pose a potential risk to the environment due to their significant consumption and biological effect even at low concentrations. They can leach into soils and sediments, wastewater, and eventually into drinking water supplies. Many conventional technologies with more effective advanced oxidation processes such as photocatalysis are being extensively studied to find an economical and environmentally friendly solution for the removal of impurities from wastewater as the main source of these pharmaceuticals. Since it is impossible to treat water by photocatalysis if there is no sorption of a contaminant on the photocatalyst, this work investigated the amount of imatinib and crizotinib sorbed from an aqueous medium to different forms of photocatalyst. In addition, based on the sorption affinity studied, the applicability of sorption as a simpler and less costly process was tested in general as a potential route to remove imatinib and crizotinib from water. Their sorption possibility was investigated determining the maximum of sorption, influence of pH, ionic strength, temperature, and sorbent dosage in form of the suspension and immobilized on the fiberglass mesh with only TiO2 and in combination with TiO2/carbon nanotubes. The sorption isotherm data fitted well the linear, Freundlich, and Langmuir model for both pharmaceuticals. An increasing trend of sorption coefficients Kd was observed in the pH range of 5–9 with CRZ, showing higher sorption affinity to all TiO2 forms, which was supported by KF values higher than 116 (μg/g)(mL/μg)1/n. The results also show a positive correlation between Kd and temperature as well as sorbent dosage for both pharmaceuticals, while CRZ sorbed less at higher salt concentration. The kinetic data were best described with a pseudo-second-order model (R2 > 0.995).

Advancements in heavy metals removal from effluents employing nano-adsorbents: Way towards cleaner production

Due to the development in science field which gives not only benefit but also introducesundesirable pollution to the environment. This pollution is due to poor discharge activities of industrial effluents into the soil and water bodies, surface run off from fields of agricultural lands, dumping of untreated wastes by municipalities, and mining activites, which deteriorates the cardinal virtue of our environment and causes menace to human health and life. Heavy metal(s), a natural constituent on earth's crust and economic important mineral, due to its recalcitrant effects creates heavy metal pollution which affects food chain and also reduces the quality of water. For this, many researchers have performed studies to find efficient methods for wastewater remediation. One of the most promising methods from economic point of view is adsorption, which is simple in design, but leads to use of a wide range of adsorbents and ease of operations. Due to advances in nanotechnology, many nanomaterials were used as adsorbents for wastewater remediation, because of their efficiency. Many researchers have reported that nanoadsorbents are unmitigatedly a fruitful solution to address this world's problem. This review presents a potent view on various classes of nanoadsorbents and their application to wastewater treatment. It provides a bird's eye view of the suitability of different types of nanomaterials for remediation of wastewater and Backspace gives up-to-date information about polymer based and silica-based nanoadsorbents.

Experimental determination of the curvature-induced intra-wall polarization of inorganic nanotubes

Inspired by a natural nano-mineral known as imogolite, aluminosilicate inorganic nanotubes are appealing systems for photocatalysis. Here, we studied two types of synthetic imogolites: one is completely hydrophilic (IMO-OH), while the other has a hydrophilic exterior and a hydrophobic interior (IMO-CH₃), enabling the encapsulation of organic molecules. We combined UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy of imogolite powders and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy of deposited imogolite films and isolated nanotubes agglomerates to obtain not only the band structure, but also the quantitative intra-wall polarization of both synthetic imogolites for the first time. The potential difference across the imogolite wall was determined to be 0.7 V for IMO-OH and around 0.2 V for IMO-CH₃. The high curvature of the nanotubes, together with the thinness of their wall, favors efficient spontaneous charge separation and electron exchange reactions on both the internal and external nanotube surfaces. In addition, the positions of their valence and conduction band edges make them interesting candidates for co-catalysts or doped catalysts for water splitting, among other possible photocatalytic reactions relevant to energy and the environment.

Insights into Solar Disinfection Enhancements for Drinking Water Treatment Applications

Poor access to drinking water, sanitation, and hygiene has always been a major concern and a main challenge facing humanity even in the current century. A third of the global population lacks access to microbiologically safe drinking water, especially in rural and poor areas that lack proper treatment facilities. Solar water disinfection (SODIS) is widely proven by the World Health Organization as an accepted method for inactivating waterborne pathogens. A significant number of studies have recently been conducted regarding its effectiveness and how to overcome its limitations, by using water pretreatment steps either by physical, chemical, and biological factors or the integration of photocatalysis in SODIS processes. This review covers the role of solar disinfection in water treatment applications, going through different water treatment approaches including physical, chemical, and biological, and discusses the inactivation mechanisms of water pathogens including bacteria, viruses, and even protozoa and fungi. The review also addresses the latest advances in different pre-treatment modifications to enhance the treatment performance of the SODIS process in addition to the main limitations and challenges.

Titanium Dioxide-Based Photocatalysts for Degradation of Emerging Contaminants including Pharmaceutical Pollutants

Contamination of the environment has been a growing problem in recent years. Due to the rapid growth in human population, the expansion of cities, along with the development of industry, more and more dangerous chemicals end up in the environment, especially in soil and water. For the most part, it is not possible to effectively remove chemicals through traditional remediation techniques, because those used in treatment plants are not specifically designed for this purpose. Therefore, new approaches for water remediation are in great demand. Many efforts have been focused on applications of photocatalysis for the remediation of chemical pollutants including drugs. Titanium(IV) oxide nanoparticles have particularly been considered as potential photocatalysts due to their favorable properties. In this article, we present the problem of emerging contaminants including drugs and discuss the use of photocatalysts based on titanium(IV) oxide nanoparticles for their degradation. A wide selection of materials, starting from bare TiO2, via its hybrid and composite materials, are discussed including those based on carbonaceous materials or connections with macrocyclic structures. Examples of photodegradation experiments on TiO2-based materials including those performed with various active pharmaceutical ingredients are also included.

Synergistic photocatalytic activity of a combination of carbon nanotubes-graphene-nickel foam nanocomposites enhanced by dielectric barrier discharge plasma technology for water purification

Degradation activity of plasma catalysis between dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) and carbon nanotubes-graphene-nickel foam (CNTs-G-Ni_f) has been studied in treatment of dye wastewater. CNTs-G-Ni_f was prepared through a two-step chemical vapor deposition (CVD) approach. The composite has been characterized by different techniques such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and Raman spectroscopy. SEM results showed that the Ni_f as the growth substrate was evenly wrapped by G and then CNTs were successfully grown on G as the support. The growth mechanism of composite was proposed. The possible coupled catalytic mechanism between DBD and CNTs-G-Ni_f were addressed. In addition, the modification on G-Ni_f was found by SEM during the discharge process in liquid phase. And the modification mechanism of DBD plasma (DBDP) acting on composites was discussed. Finally, by means of analyses of ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS), the general degradation pathway and stepwise degradation pathways of alizarin green (AG) were proposed in detail.

Removal of decidedly lethal metal arsenic from water using metal organic frameworks: a critical review

Water contamination is worldwide issue, undermining whole biosphere, influencing life of a large number of individuals all over the world. Water contamination is one of the chief worldwide danger issues for death, sickness, and constant decrease of accessible drinkable water around the world. Among the others, presence of arsenic, is considered as the most widely recognized lethal contaminant in water bodies and poses a serious threat not exclusively to humans but also towards aquatic lives. Hence, steps must be taken to decrease quantity of arsenic in water to permissible limits. Recently, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with outstanding stability, sorption capacities, and ecofriendly performance have empowered enormous improvements in capturing substantial metal particles. MOFs have been affirmed as good performance adsorbents for arsenic removal having extended surface area and displayed remarkable results as reported in literature. In this review we look at MOFs which have been recently produced and considered for potential applications in arsenic metal expulsion. We have delivered a summary of up-to-date abilities as well as significant characteristics of MOFs used for this removal. In this review conventional and advanced materials applied to treat water by adsorptive method are also discussed briefly.

Effects of temperature on caffeine and carbon nanotubes co-exposure in Ruditapes philippinarum

In the marine environment, organisms are exposed to a high and increasing number of different contaminants that can interact among them. In addition, abiotic factors can change the dynamics between contaminants and organisms, thus increasing or even decreasing the toxic effect of a particular compound. In this study, the effects of caffeine (CAF) and functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (f-MWCNTs) induced in the clam Ruditapes philippinarum were evaluated, acting alone and in combination (MIX), under two temperature levels (18 and 21 °C). To assess the impact of such compounds, their interaction and the possible influence of temperature, biochemical and histopathological markers were investigated. The effects of f-MWCNTs and caffeine appear to be clearly negative at the control temperature, with lower protein content in contaminated clams and a significant decrease in their metabolism when both pollutants were acting in combination. Also, at control temperature, clams exposed to pollutants showed increased antioxidant capacity, especially when caffeine was acting alone, although cellular damages were still observed at CAF and f-MWCNTs treatments. Increased biotransformation capacity at 18 °C and MIX treatment may explain lower caffeine concentration observed. At increased temperature differences among treatments were not so evident as at 18 °C, with a similar biological pattern among contaminated and control clams. Higher caffeine accumulation at MIX treatment under warming conditions may result from clams' inefficient biotransformation capacity when exposed to increased temperatures.

Nanotechnology in Wastewater Management: A New Paradigm Towards Wastewater Treatment

Clean and safe water is a fundamental human need for multi-faceted development of society and a thriving economy. Brisk rises in populations, expanding industrialization, urbanization and extensive agriculture practices have resulted in the generation of wastewater which have not only made the water dirty or polluted, but also deadly. Millions of people die every year due to diseases communicated through consumption of water contaminated by deleterious pathogens. Although various methods for wastewater treatment have been explored in the last few decades but their use is restrained by many limitations including use of chemicals, formation of disinfection by-products (DBPs), time consumption and expensiveness. Nanotechnology, manipulation of matter at a molecular or an atomic level to craft new structures, devices and systems having superior electronic, optical, magnetic, conductive and mechanical properties, is emerging as a promising technology, which has demonstrated remarkable feats in various fields including wastewater treatment. Nanomaterials encompass a high surface to volume ratio, a high sensitivity and reactivity, a high adsorption capacity, and ease of functionalization which makes them suitable for application in wastewater treatment. In this article we have reviewed the techniques being developed for wastewater treatment using nanotechnology based on adsorption and biosorption, nanofiltration, photocatalysis, disinfection and sensing technology. Furthermore, this review also highlights the fate of the nanomaterials in wastewater treatment as well as risks associated with their use.

Carbon-based sustainable nanomaterials for water treatment: State-of-art and future perspectives

The supply of safe drinking and clean water is becoming increasingly challenging proposition throughout the world. The deployment of environmentally sustainable nanomaterials with unique advantages namely high efficiency and selectivity, earth-abundance, recyclability, low-cost of production processes, and stability, has been a priority although several important challenges and constraints still remained unresolved. Carbon nanomaterials namely activated carbon, multi-walled- and single-walled carbon nanotubes, have been developed and applied as adsorbents for wastewater treatment and purification; graphene and graphene oxide-based nanomaterials as well as carbon and graphene quantum dots-derived nanomaterials have shown significant promise for water and wastewater treatment and purification, especially, for industrial- and pharmaceutical-laden wastes. This review encompasses advanced carbonaceous nanomaterials and methodologies that are deployed for the elimination of contaminants and ionic metals in aqueous media, and as novel nanosorbents for wastewater, drinking and ground water treatment. Additionally, recent trends and challenges pertaining to the sustainable carbon and graphene quantum dots-derived nanomaterials and their appliances for treating and purifying wastewater are highlighted.

Synthesis and characterization of hexagonal boron nitride used for comparison of removal of anionic and cationic hazardous azo-dye: kinetics and equilibrium studies

The purpose of this study was to compare the adsorption behavior of cationic and anionic dyes onto a hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) nanostructure that was rich in a negative charge. Herein, the hBN nanostructure was synthesized using boric acid as a precursor material. The characteristic peaks of the hBN nanostructure were performed using Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) and Raman spectroscopies. The morphology and the particle size of hBN nanostructure were determined by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). During the studies, various essential adsorption parameters were investigated, such as the initial dye concentration, pH of the dye solution, adsorbent dose, and contact time. Under optimal conditions, the removal of 42.6% Metanil yellow (MY) and 90% Victoria blue B (VBB) from aqueous solution was performed using a 10-mg hBN nanostructure. Furthermore, the equilibrium studies showed that the Freundlich isotherm model fitted well for the removal of MY. However, the Langmuir isotherm model fitted well for the removal of VBB. Moreover, according to the results obtained from the kinetic studies, while the first-order kinetic model was suited for the adsorption of the MY, the second-order kinetic model was found to well fit for the adsorption of VBB.

Cytotoxic aquatic pollutants and their removal by nanocomposite-based sorbents

Water is an extremely essential compound for human life and, hence, accessing drinking water is very important all over the world. Nowadays, due to the urbanization and industrialization, several noxious pollutants are discharged into water. Water pollution by various cytotoxic contaminants, e.g. heavy metal ions, drugs, pesticides, dyes, residues a drastic public health issue for human beings; hence, this topic has been receiving much attention for the specific approaches and technologies to remove hazardous contaminants from water and wastewater. In the current review, the cytotoxicity of different sorts of aquatic pollutants for mammalian is presented. In addition, we will overview the recent advances in various nanocomposite-based adsorbents and different approaches of pollutants removal from water/wastewater with several examples to provide a backdrop for future research.

Nanoadsorbents for water and wastewater remediation

Water has a wide-ranging effect on all aspects of human life, such as health and food. However, the water has often become polluted by the waste of our industrial, agricultural, and day-to-day activities due to the impact of humans. Therefore, there is an urgent need for new technologies to remove the contaminants from water and wastewater. Thence, many ways and techniques have been developed for water and wastewater remediation. Among all the methods of water and wastewater remediation techniques, the adsorption process has gained tremendous importance as a suitable water and wastewater remediation. The application of nanoadsorbent materials is a growing solution to solving this environmental problem. The unique physical and chemical properties of nanoadsorbents enhance their application due to its higher in ranking, status, and quality and beneficial in different fields compared to traditional adsorbents. Recently, numerous studies reported that the nanosorbent materials have a great and quite promising effect on water and wastewater treatment such as carbon tube, polymeric, zeolites, metal and metal oxides nanosorbents. Thus, the aim of this review article is to provide new data on the study and the improvement in this specific field, and to provide a version of the uses, benefits and restrictions of nanosorbents in water and wastewater remediation.

Efficient technologies for carwash wastewater treatment: a systematic review

Carwash wastewater (CWW) is considered as an important source of either water pollution or water consumption. Therefore, its treatment is critical not only from the prevention of environmental contamination but also from the recycling of such high-volume water source. Unfortunately, the effective treatment of CWW is almost unknown, complex, and expensive. To overcome the former challenge, this study aimed to systematically review different technologies for CWW treatment. For this, a comprehensive literature survey was conducted and 48 research articles were found suitable to be included in the investigation. The included studies were of coagulation and adsorption (n = 5), membrane-based technologies (n = 15), and electrochemical (n = 11) and combined (n = 17) systems. This comprehensive review showed that the treatment methods of advanced filtration membrane techniques, electrical and chemical coagulation, and advanced oxidation processes can be effective in the removal of pollutants from carwash wastewater (CWW). The mining of different studies, however, showed that the combined methods are the most promising option in the remediation of such wastewater.

Carbon Nanotubes (CNTs): A Potential Nanomaterial for Water Purification

Nanomaterials such as carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have been used as an excellent material for catalysis, separation, adsorption and disinfection processes. CNTs have grabbed the attention of the scientific community and they have the potential to adsorb most of the organic compounds from water. Unlike, reverse osmosis (RO), nanofiltration (NF) and ultrafiltration (UF) membranes aligned CNT membranes can act as high-flow desalination membranes. CNTs provide a relatively safer electrode solution for biosensors. The article is of the utmost importance for the scientists and technologists working in water purification technologies to eliminate the water crisis in the future. This review summarizes about the application of CNTs in water purification.

Removal of 17β-Estradiol by Activated Charcoal Supported Titanate Nanotubes (TNTs@AC) through Initial Adsorption and Subsequent Photo-Degradation: Intermediates, DFT calculation, and Mechanisms

A low-cost composite of activated charcoal supported titanate nanotubes (TNTs@AC) was developed via the facile hydrothermal method to remove the 17β-estradiol (E2, a model of pharmaceutical and personal care products) in water matrix by initial adsorption and subsequent photo-degradation. Characterizations indicated that the modification occurred, i.e., the titanate nanotubes would be grafted onto the activated charcoal (AC) surface, and the micro-carbon could modify the tubular structure of TNTs. E2 was rapidly adsorbed onto TNTs@AC, and the uptake reached 1.87 mg/g from the dual-mode model fitting. Subsequently, the adsorbed E2 could be degraded 99.8% within 2 h under ultraviolet (UV) light irradiation. TNTs@AC was attributed with a unique hybrid structure, providing the hydrophobic effect, π−π interaction, and capillary condensation for E2 adsorption, and facilitating the electron transfer and then enhancing photocatalytic ability for E2-degradation. In addition, the removal mechanism of E2 was elucidated through the density functional theory calculation. Our study is expected to provide a promising material for environmental application.

Increased Adsorption of Heavy Metal Ions in Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotubes with Improved Dispersion Stability

In recent years, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have been intensively studied as an effective adsorbent for the removal of pollutants from wastewater. One of the main problems for its use corresponds to the agglomeration of the CNTs due to the interactions between them, which prevents using their entire surface area. In this study, we test the effect of dispersion of oxidized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) on the removal of heavy metals from acidic solutions. For this, polyurethane filters were dyed with a well-dispersed oxidized MWCNTs solution using chemical and mechanical dispersion methods. Filters were used in column experiments, and the sorption capacity increased more than six times (600%) compared to experiments with suspended MWCNTs. Further, kinetic experiments showed a faster saturation on MWCNTs in column experiments. These results contribute to a better understanding of the effect of dispersion on the use of CNTs as heavy metal ions adsorbent.
