Nonequilibrium steady states in coupled asymmetric and symmetric exclusion processes

We propose and study a one-dimensional (1D) model consisting of two lanes with open boundaries. One of the lanes executes diffusive and the other lane driven unidirectional or asymmetric exclusion dynamics, which are mutually coupled through particle exchanges in the bulk. We elucidate the generic nonuniform steady states in this model. We show that in a parameter regime, where hopping along the TASEP lane, diffusion along the SEP lane, and the exchange of particles between the TASEP and SEP lanes compete, the SEP diffusivity D appears as a tuning parameter for both the SEP and TASEP densities for a given exchange rate in the nonequilibrium steady states of this model. Indeed, D can be tuned to achieve phase coexistence in the asymmetric exclusion dynamics together with spatially smoothly varying density in the diffusive dynamics in the steady state. We obtain phase diagrams of the model using mean field theories, and corroborate and complement the results with stochastic Monte Carlo simulations. This model reduces to an isolated open totally asymmetric exclusion process (TASEP) and an open TASEP with bulk particle nonconserving Langmuir kinetics (LK), respectively, in the limits of vanishing and diverging particle diffusivity in the lane executing diffusive dynamics. Thus, this model works as an overarching general model, connecting both pure TASEPs and TASEPs with LK in different asymptotic limits. We further define phases in the SEP and obtain phase diagrams and show their correspondence with the TASEP phases. In addition to its significance as a 1D driven, diffusive model, this model also serves as a simple reduced model for cell biological transport by molecular motors undergoing diffusive and directed motion inside eukaryotic cells.

Nonequilibrium currents in stochastic field theories: A geometric insight

We introduce a formalism to study nonequilibrium steady-state probability currents in stochastic field theories. We show that generalizing the exterior derivative to functional spaces allows identification of the subspaces in which the system undergoes local rotations. In turn, this allows prediction of the counterparts in the real, physical space of these abstract probability currents. The results are presented for the case of the Active Model B undergoing motility-induced phase separation, which is known to be out of equilibrium but whose steady-state currents have not yet been observed, as well as for the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation. We locate and measure these currents and show that they manifest in real space as propagating modes localized in regions with nonvanishing gradients of the fields.

Asymmetric coupling induces two-directional reentrance transition in three-lane exclusion process

Inspired by vehicular traffic phenomena, we study a three-lane open totally asymmetric simple exclusion process with both-sided lane switching in the companionship of Langmuir kinetics. We calculate the phase diagrams, density profiles, and phase transitions through mean-field theory and successfully validate these findings with Monte Carlo simulation results. It has been found that both the qualitative and quantitative topology of phase diagrams crucially rely on the ratio of lane-switching rates called coupling strength. The proposed model has various unique mixed phases, including a double shock resulting in bulk-induced phase transitions. The interplay between both-sided coupling, third lane, and Langmuir kinetics produces unusual features, including a back-and-forth phase transition, also called a reentrance transition, in two directions for relatively nominal values of coupling strength. The presence of reentrance transition and peculiar phase boundaries leads to a rare type of phase division in which one phase lies entirely within another region. Moreover, we scrutinize the shock dynamics by analyzing four different types of shock and finite-size effects.

Interplay of reservoirs in a bidirectional system

Motivated by the interplay of multiple species in several real world transport processes, we propose a bidirectional totally asymmetric simple exclusion process with two finite particle reservoirs regulating the inflow of oppositely directed particles corresponding to two different species. The system's stationary characteristics, such as densities, currents, etc., are investigated using a theoretical framework based on mean-field approximation and are supported by extensive Monte Carlo simulations. The impact of individual species populations, quantified by filling factor, has been comprehensively analyzed considering both equal and unequal conditions. For the equal case, the system exhibits the spontaneous symmetry-breaking phenomena and admits both symmetric as well as asymmetric phases. Moreover, the phase diagram exhibits a different asymmetric phase and displays a nonmonotonic variation in the number of phases with respect to the filling factor. For unequal filling factors, the phase schema can display at most five phases including a phase that shows maximal current for one of the species.

Modelling of transport processes: Theory and simulations

The transport processes, being a non-equilibrium system, have been a point of interest for physicists since many years revealing and explaining several unexpected effects. Such systems are often dealt with an archetypal model, known as totally asymmetric simple exclusion process, with two different types of boundary conditions: open and periodic. Moreover, these models are analyzed in two varieties of dynamics, random sequential and parallel updates, even at the micro level which play an important role in the global dynamics of the system. On contrary to the random sequential rule, the parallel updates introduce correlations in the system. Using theoretical and numerical methods in the framework based on mean-field approaches, the system properties are analyzed in both transient and steady state.•Both the updating rules are realized using Monte Carlo simulations.•In simplest form, mean-field approach ignores all the correlations and the results coincide with the random sequential update.•Correlations are induced in the system due to parallel update, therefore, a cluster mean-field theory is also discussed to handle them.

Flocking in one dimension: Asters and reversals

We study the one-dimensional active Ising model in which aligning particles undergo diffusion biased by the signs of their spins. The phase diagram obtained varying the density of particles, their hopping rate, and the temperature controlling the alignment shows a homogeneous disordered phase but no homogeneous ordered one, as well as two phases with localized dense structures. In the flocking phase, large ordered aggregates move ballistically and stochastically reverse their direction of motion. In what we termed the "aster" phase, dense immobile aggregates of opposite magnetization face each other, exchanging particles, without any net motion of the aggregates. Using a combination of numerical simulations and mean-field theory, we study the evolution of the shapes of the flocks, the statistics of their reversal times, and their coarsening dynamics. Solving exactly for the zero-temperature dynamics of an aster allows us to understand their coarsening, which shows extremal dynamics, while mean-field equations account for their shape.

Microemulsions in the driven Widom-Rowlinson lattice gas

An investigation of the two-dimensional Widom-Rowlinson lattice gas under an applied drive uncovered a remarkable nonequilibrium steady state in which uniform stripes (reminiscent of an equilibrium lamellar phase) form perpendicular to the drive direction [R. Dickman and R. K. P. Zia, Phys. Rev. E 97, 062126 (2018)10.1103/PhysRevE.97.062126]. Here we study this model at low particle densities in two and three dimensions, where we find a disordered phase with a characteristic length scale (a "microemulsion") along the drive direction. We develop a continuum theory of this disordered phase to derive a coarse-grained field-theoretic action for the nonequilibrium dynamics. The action has the form of two coupled driven diffusive systems with different characteristic velocities, generated by an interplay between the particle repulsion and the drive. We then show how fluctuation corrections in the field theory may generate the characteristic features of the microemulsion phase, including a peak in the static structure factor corresponding to the characteristic length scale. This work lays the foundation for understanding the stripe phenomenon more generally.

Nonequilibrium phase transition in an Ising model without detailed balance

We study a two-dimensional ferromagnetic Ising model in which spins are updated using modified versions of the Metropolis and Glauber algorithms. These update rules do not obey the detailed balance condition. The steady-state behavior of the model is studied using molecular field theory and Monte Carlo simulations. This model is found to exhibit a nonequilibrium phase transition from a "paramagnetic" state with zero magnetization to a "ferromagnetic" state with nonzero magnetization as the variable that plays the role of temperature in the spin updates is decreased. From detailed Monte Carlo simulations using the modified Metropolis algorithm, we demonstrate explicitly the nonequilibrium nature of the transition and show that it cannot be described as an equilibrium transition with an effective temperature different from the temperature used in the spin updates. The critical exponents that characterize the singular behavior near this continuous phase transition are calculated from finite size scaling of specific heat, magnetization, susceptibility, and correlation length. We find that the values of these exponents are the same (within error bars) as those of the equilibrium Ising model in two dimensions.

Current-density relation in the exclusion process with dynamic obstacles

We investigate the totally asymmetric simple exclusion process (TASEP) in the presence of obstacles that dynamically bind and unbind from the lattice. The model is motivated by biological processes such as transcription in the presence of DNA-binding proteins. Similar models have been studied before using the mean-field approximation, but the exact relation between the particle current and density remains elusive. Here, we first show using extensive Monte Carlo simulations that the current-density relation in this model assumes a quasiparabolic form similar to that of the ordinary TASEP without obstacles. We then attempt to explain this relation using exact calculations in the limit of low and high density of particles. Our results suggest that the symmetric, quasiparabolic current-density relation arises through a nontrivial cancellation of higher-order terms, similarly as in the standard TASEP.

Separation of dense colloidal suspensions in narrow channels: A stochastic model

The flow of a colloidal suspension in a narrow channel of periodically varying width is described by the one-dimensional generalized asymmetric exclusion process. Each site admits multiple particle occupancy. We consider particles of two different sizes. The sites available to particles form a comblike geometry: entropic traps due to variation of channel width are modeled by dead ends, or pockets, attached individually to each site of a one-dimensional chain. This geometry, combined with periodically alternating external driving, leads to a ratchet effect which is very sensitive to particle size, thus enabling particle sorting. A typical behavior is reversal of the current orientation when we change the density of small and big particles. In an optimal situation, the two types of particles move in opposite directions, and particle separation is in principle perfect. We show that in the simplest situation with one type of particles only, this model is exactly soluble. In the general case we use enhanced mean-field approximation as well as direct numerical simulations.

Transverse temperature interfaces in the Katz-Lebowitz-Spohn driven lattice gas

We explore the intriguing spatial patterns that emerge in a two-dimensional spatially inhomogeneous Katz-Lebowitz-Spohn (KLS) driven lattice gas with attractive nearest-neighbor interactions. The domain is split into two regions with hopping rates governed by different temperatures T>T_{c} and T_{c}, respectively, where T_{c} indicates the critical temperature for phase ordering, and with the temperature boundaries oriented perpendicular to the drive. In the hotter region, the system behaves like the (totally) asymmetric exclusion processes (TASEP), and experiences particle blockage in front of the interface to the critical region. To explain this particle density accumulation near the interface, we have measured the steady-state current in the KLS model at T>T_{c} and found it to decay as 1/T. In analogy with TASEP systems containing "slow" bonds, we argue that transport in the high-temperature subsystem is impeded by the lower current in the cooler region, which tends to set the global stationary particle current value. This blockage is induced by the extended particle clusters, growing logarithmically with system size, in the critical region. We observe the density profiles in both high- and low-temperature subsystems to be similar to the well-characterized coexistence and maximal-current phases in (T)ASEP models with open boundary conditions, which are respectively governed by hyperbolic and trigonometric tangent functions. Yet if the lower temperature is set to T_{c}, we detect marked fluctuation corrections to the mean-field density profiles, e.g., the corresponding critical KLS power-law density decay near the interfaces into the cooler region.

Dynamical phase behavior of the single- and multi-lane asymmetric simple exclusion process via matrix product states

The open asymmetric simple exclusion process (ASEP) has emerged as a paradigmatic model of nonequilibrium behavior, in part due to its complex dynamical behavior and wide physical applicability as a model of driven diffusion. We compare the dynamical phase behavior of the one-dimensional (1D) ASEP and the multi-lane ASEP, a previously unstudied extension of the 1D model that may be thought of as a finite-width strip of the fully two-dimensional (2D) system. Our characterization employs large deviation theory (LDT), matrix product states (MPS), and the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) algorithm, to compute the current cumulant generating function and its derivatives, which serve as dynamical order parameters. We use this measure to show that when particles cannot exit or enter the lattice vertically, the phase behavior of the multi-lane ASEP mimics that of its 1D counterpart, exhibiting the macroscopic and microscopic signatures of the maximal current, shock, and high-density-low-density coexistence phases. Conversely, when particles are allowed to freely enter and exit the lattice, no such transition is observed. This contrast emphasizes the complex interplay between latitudinal and longitudinal hopping rates and the effect of current biasing. Our results support the potential of tensor networks as a framework to understand classical nonequilibrium statistical mechanics.

Driving driven lattice gases to identify their universality classes

The critical behaviors of driven lattice gas models have been studied for decades as a paradigm to explore nonequilibrium phase transitions and critical phenomena. However, there exists a long-standing controversy in their universality classes. This is of paramount importance as it implies the question of whether or not a microscopic model and its mesoscopic field theory may possess different symmetries in nonequilibrium critical phenomena in contrast to their equilibrium counterparts. Here, we heat with finite rates two generic models of driven lattice gases across their respective nonequilibrium critical points into further nonequilibrium situations. Employing the theory of finite-time scaling, we are able to unambiguously discriminate the universality classes between the two models. In particular, the infinitely driven lattice gas and the randomly driven lattice gas models belong to different universality classes. These results show that finite-time scaling is effective even in nonequilibrium phase transitions.

Steady-state entropy: A proposal based on thermodynamic integration

Defining an entropy function out of equilibrium is an outstanding challenge. For stochastic lattice models in spatially uniform nonequilibrium steady states, definitions of temperature T and chemical potential μ have been verified using coexistence with heat and particle reservoirs. For an appropriate choice of exchange rates, T and μ satisfy the zeroth law, marking an important step in the development of steady-state thermodynamics. These results suggest that an associated steady-state entropy S_{th} be constructed via thermodynamic integration, using relations such as (∂S/∂E)_{V,N}=1/T, ensuring that derivatives of S_{th} with respect to energy and particle number yield the expected intensive parameters. We determine via direct calculation the stationary nonequilibrium probability distribution of the driven lattice gas with nearest-neighbor exclusion, the Katz-Lebowitz-Spohn driven lattice gas, and a two-temperature Ising model so that we may evaluate the Shannon entropy S_{S} as well as S_{th} defined above. Although the two entropies are identical in equilibrium (as expected), they differ out of equilibrium; for small values of the drive, D, we find |S_{S}-S_{th}|∝D^{2}, as expected on the basis of symmetry. We verify that S_{th} is not a state function: changes ΔS_{th} depend not only on the initial and final points, but also on the path in parameter space. The inequivalence of S_{S} and S_{th} implies that derivatives of S_{S} are not predictive of coexistence. In other words, a nonequilibrium steady state is not determined by maximizing the Shannon entropy. Our results cast doubt on the possibility of defining a state function that plays the role of a thermodynamic entropy for nonequilibrium steady states.

Effects of collectively induced scattering of gas stream by impurity ensembles: Shock-wave enhancement and disorder-stimulated nonlinear screening

We report on specific effects of collective scattering for a cloud of heavy impurities exposed to a gas stream. Formation is presented of a common density perturbation and shock waves, both generated collectively by a system of scatterers at sudden application of the stream-inducing external field. Our results demonstrate that (i) the scattering of gas stream can be essentially amplified, due to nonlinear collective effects, upon fragmentation of a solid obstacle into a cluster of impurities (heterogeneously fractured obstacle); (ii) a cluster of disordered impurities can produce considerably stronger scattering accompanied by enhanced and accelerated shock wave, as compared to a regularly ordered cluster. We also show that the final steady-state density distribution is formed as a residual perturbation left after the shock front passage. In particular, a kinklike steady distribution profile can be formed as a result of shock front stopping effect. The possibility of the onset of solitary diffusive density waves, reminiscent of precursor solitons, is shown and briefly discussed.

Driven Widom-Rowlinson lattice gas

In the Widom-Rowlinson lattice gas, two particle species (A, B) diffuse freely via particle-hole exchange, subject to both on-site exclusion and prohibition of A-B nearest-neighbor pairs. As an athermal system, the overall densities are the only control parameters. As the densities increase, an entropically driven phase transition occurs, leading to ordered states with A- and B-rich domains separated by hole-rich interfaces. Using Monte Carlo simulations, we analyze the effect of imposing a drive on this system, biasing particle moves along one direction. Our study parallels that for a driven Ising lattice gas, the Katz-Lebowitz-Spohn (KLS) model, which displays atypical collective behavior, e.g., structure factors with discontinuity singularities and ordered states with domains only parallel to the drive. Here, other interesting features emerge, including structure factors with kink singularities (best fitted to |q|), maxima at nonvanishing wave-vector values, oscillating correlation functions, and ordering into multiple striped domains perpendicular to the drive, with a preferred wavelength depending on density and drive intensity. Moreover, the (hole-rich) interfaces between the domains are statistically rough (whether driven or not), in sharp contrast with those in the KLS model, in which the drive suppresses interfacial roughness. Defining an order parameter that accounts for the emergence of multistripe states, we map out the phase diagram in the density-drive plane and present preliminary evidence for a critical phase in this driven lattice gas.

Exact Fluctuations of Nonequilibrium Steady States from Approximate Auxiliary Dynamics

We describe a framework to reduce the computational effort to evaluate large deviation functions of time integrated observables within nonequilibrium steady states. We do this by incorporating an auxiliary dynamics into trajectory based Monte Carlo calculations, through a transformation of the system's propagator using an approximate guiding function. This procedure importance samples the trajectories that most contribute to the large deviation function, mitigating the exponential complexity of such calculations. We illustrate the method by studying driven diffusion and interacting lattice models in one and two spatial dimensions. Our work offers an avenue to calculate large deviation functions for high dimensional systems driven far from equilibrium.

Influence of turbulent mixing on critical behavior of directed percolation process: Effect of compressibility

Universal behavior is a typical emergent feature of critical systems. A paramount model of the nonequilibrium critical behavior is the directed bond percolation process that exhibits an active-to-absorbing state phase transition in the vicinity of a percolation threshold. Fluctuations of the ambient environment might affect or destroy the universality properties completely. In this work, we assume that the random environment can be described by means of compressible velocity fluctuations. Using field-theoretic models and renormalization group methods, we investigate large-scale and long-time behavior. Altogether, 11 universality classes are found, out of which 4 are stable in the infrared limit and thus macroscopically accessible. In contrast to the model without velocity fluctuations, a possible candidate for a realistic three-dimensional case, a regime with relevant short-range noise, is identified. Depending on the dimensionality of space and the structure of the turbulent flow, we calculate critical exponents of the directed percolation process. In the limit of the purely transversal random force, critical exponents comply with the incompressible results obtained by previous authors. We have found intriguing nonuniversal behavior related to the mutual effect of compressibility and advection.

Universal Gaussian behavior of driven lattice gases at short times

The dynamic and static critical behaviors of driven and equilibrium lattice gas models are studied in two spatial dimensions. We show that in the short-time regime immediately following a critical quench, the dynamics of the transverse anisotropic order parameter, its autocorrelation, and Binder cumulant are consistent with the prediction of a Gaussian, i.e., noninteracting, effective theory, both for the nonequilibrium lattice gases and, to some extent, their equilibrium counterpart. Such a superuniversal behavior is observed only at short times after a critical quench, while the various models display their distinct behaviors in the stationary states, described by the corresponding, known universality classes.

Current quantization and fractal hierarchy in a driven repulsive lattice gas

Driven lattice gases are widely regarded as the paradigm of collective phenomena out of equilibrium. While such models are usually studied with nearest-neighbor interactions, many empirical driven systems are dominated by slowly decaying interactions such as dipole-dipole and Van der Waals forces. Motivated by this gap, we study the nonequilibrium stationary state of a driven lattice gas with slow-decayed repulsive interactions at zero temperature. By numerical and analytical calculations of the particle current as a function of the density and of the driving field, we identify (i) an abrupt breakdown transition between insulating and conducting states, (ii) current quantization into discrete phases where a finite current flows with infinite differential resistivity, and (iii) a fractal hierarchy of excitations, related to the Farey sequences of number theory. We argue that the origin of these effects is the competition between scales, which also causes the counterintuitive phenomenon that crystalline states can melt by increasing the density.

Variational calculation of transport coefficients in diffusive lattice gases

A diffusive lattice gas is characterized by the diffusion coefficient depending only on the density. The Green-Kubo formula for diffusivity can be represented as a variational formula, but even when the equilibrium properties of a lattice gas are analytically known, the diffusion coefficient can be computed only in the exceptional situation when the lattice gas is gradient. In the general case, minimization over an infinite-dimensional space is required. We propose an approximation scheme based on minimizing over finite-dimensional subspaces of functions. The procedure is demonstrated for one-dimensional generalized exclusion processes in which each site can accommodate at most two particles. Our analytical predictions provide upper bounds for the diffusivity that are very close to simulation results throughout the entire density range. We also analyze nonequilibrium density profiles for finite chains coupled to reservoirs. The predictions for the profiles are in excellent agreement with simulations.

Nonlinear diffusion in multicomponent liquid solutions

Mutual diffusion in multicomponent liquids is studied. It is taken into consideration that the influence of complex formation on the diffusion process may be substantial. The theory is applied to analyze mass transfer in an acetone-chloroform solution. The molecular complex concentration was obtained from the analysis of Fourier transform infrared spectra of this solution. Taking into account molecular complex formation allows one to explain the experimental dependence of diffusion coefficients on the composition (components concentration). The accuracy of experimental and theoretical data descriptions in the frame of our model is compared to the accuracy for some other approaches.

Effects of gas interparticle interaction on dissipative wake-mediated forces

We examine how the short-range repulsive interaction in a gas of Brownian particles affects behavior of the nonequilibrium depletion forces between obstacles embedded into the gas flow. It is shown that for an ensemble of small and widely separated obstacles the dissipative wake-mediated interaction belongs to the type of induced dipole-dipole interaction governed by an anisotropic screened Coulomb-like potential. For closely located obstacles, formation of a common density perturbation "coat" around them leads to enhancement of dissipative interaction, manifested by characteristic peaks in its dependence on both the bath fraction and the external driving field. Moreover, additional screening of the gas flow due to nonlinear blockade effect gives rise to generation of a pronounced step-like profile of gas density distribution around the obstacles. This can lead to additional enhancement of dissipative interaction between obstacles. The possibility of the dissipative pairing effect and dissipative interaction switching provoked by wake inversion is briefly discussed. All the results are obtained within the classical lattice-gas model.

Short-Time Behavior and Criticality of Driven Lattice Gases

The nonequilibrium short-time critical behaviors of driven and undriven lattice gases are investigated via Monte Carlo simulations in two spatial dimensions starting from a fully disordered initial configuration. In particular, we study the time evolution of suitably defined order parameters, which account for the strong anisotropy introduced by the homogeneous drive. We demonstrate that, at short times, the dynamics of all these models is unexpectedly described by an effective continuum theory in which transverse fluctuations, i.e., fluctuations averaged along the drive, are Gaussian, irrespective of this being actually the case in the stationary state. Strong numerical evidence is provided, in remarkable agreement with that theory, both for the driven and undriven lattice gases, which therefore turn out to display the same short-time dynamics.

Phase separation transition in a nonconserved two-species model

A one-dimensional stochastic exclusion process with two species of particles, + and -, is studied where density of each species can fluctuate but the total particle density is conserved. From the exact stationary state weights we show that, in the limiting case where density of negative particles vanishes, the system undergoes a phase separation transition where a macroscopic domain of vacancies form in front of a single surviving negative particle. We also show that the phase-separated state is associated with a diverging correlation length for any density and that the critical exponents characterizing the behavior in this region are different from those at the transition line. The static and the dynamical critical exponents are obtained from the exact solution and numerical simulations, respectively.

Phase-plane analysis of the totally asymmetric simple exclusion process with binding kinetics and switching between antiparallel lanes

Motor protein motion on biopolymers can be described by models related to the totally asymmetric simple exclusion process (TASEP). Inspired by experiments on the motion of kinesin-4 motors on antiparallel microtubule overlaps, we analyze a model incorporating the TASEP on two antiparallel lanes with binding kinetics and lane switching. We determine the steady-state motor density profiles using phase-plane analysis of the steady-state mean field equations and kinetic Monte Carlo simulations. We focus on the density-density phase plane, where we find an analytic solution to the mean field model. By studying the phase-space flows, we determine the model's fixed points and their changes with parameters. Phases previously identified for the single-lane model occur for low switching rate between lanes. We predict a multiple coexistence phase due to additional fixed points that appear as the switching rate increases: switching moves motors from the higher-density to the lower-density lane, causing local jamming and creating multiple domain walls. We determine the phase diagram of the model for both symmetric and general boundary conditions.

Association-dissociation process with aging subunits: Recursive solution

The coupling of stochastic growth and shrinkage of one-dimensional structures to random aging of the constituting subunits defines the simple association-dissociation-aging process which captures the essential features of the nonequilibrium assembly of cytoskeletal filaments. Because of correlations, previously employed mean-field methods fail to correctly describe filament growth. We study an alternative formulation of the full master equation of the stochastic process. An ansatz for the steady-state solution leads to a recursion relation which allows for the calculation of all emergent quantities with increasing accuracy and in excellent agreement with stochastic simulations.

Dynamical Quasicondensation of Hard-Core Bosons at Finite Momenta

Long-range order in quantum many-body systems is usually associated with equilibrium situations. Here, we experimentally investigate the quasicondensation of strongly interacting bosons at finite momenta in a far-from-equilibrium case. We prepare an inhomogeneous initial state consisting of one-dimensional Mott insulators in the center of otherwise empty one-dimensional chains in an optical lattice with a lattice constant d. After suddenly quenching the trapping potential to zero, we observe the onset of coherence in spontaneously forming quasicondensates in the lattice. Remarkably, the emerging phase order differs from the ground-state order and is characterized by peaks at finite momenta ±(π/2)(ℏ/d) in the momentum distribution function.

Unraveling the puzzling intermediate states in the Biham-Middleton-Levine traffic model

The Biham-Middleton-Levine (BML) traffic model, a cellular automaton with eastbound and northbound cars moving by turns on a square lattice, has been an underpinning model in the study of collective behavior by cars, pedestrians, and even internet packages. Contrary to initial beliefs that the model exhibits a sharp phase transition from freely flowing to fully jammed, it has been reported that it shows intermediate stable phases, where jams and freely flowing traffic coexist, but there is no clear understanding of their origin. Here, we analyze the model as an anisotropic system with a preferred fluid direction (northeast) and find that it exhibits two differentiated phase transitions: the system is either longer in the flow direction (longitudinal) or perpendicular to it (transversal). The critical densities where these transitions occur enclose the density interval of intermediate states and can be approximated by mean-field analysis, all derived from the anisotropic exponent relating the longitudinal and transversal correlation lengths. Thus, we arrive at the interesting result that the puzzling intermediate states in the original model are just a superposition of these two different behaviors of the phase transition, solving by the way most mysteries behind the BML model, which turns out to be a paradigmatic example of such anisotropic critical systems.

Failure of steady-state thermodynamics in nonuniform driven lattice gases

To be useful, steady-state thermodynamics (SST) must be self-consistent and have predictive value. Consistency of SST was recently verified for driven lattice gases under global weak exchange. Here I verify consistency of SST under local (pointwise) exchange, but only in the limit of a vanishing exchange rate; for a finite exchange rate the coexisting systems have different chemical potentials. I consider the lattice gas with nearest-neighbor exclusion on the square lattice, with nearest-neighbor hopping, and with hopping to both nearest and next-nearest neighbors. I show that SST does not predict the coexisting densities under a nonuniform drive or in the presence of a nonuniform density provoked by a hard wall or nonuniform transition rates. The steady-state chemical potential profile is, moreover, nonuniform at coexistence, contrary to the basic principles of thermodynamics. Finally, I discuss examples of a pair of systems possessing identical steady states but which do not coexist when placed in contact. The results of these studies confirm the validity of SST for coexistence between spatially uniform systems but cast serious doubt on its consistency and predictive value in systems with a finite rate of particle exchange between coexisting regions exhibiting a nonuniform particle density.

Nonequilibrium statistical mechanics of a two-temperature Ising ring with conserved dynamics

The statistical mechanics of a one-dimensional Ising model in thermal equilibrium is well-established, textbook material. Yet, when driven far from equilibrium by coupling two sectors to two baths at different temperatures, it exhibits remarkable phenomena, including an unexpected "freezing by heating." These phenomena are explored through systematic numerical simulations. Our study reveals complicated relaxation processes as well as a crossover between two very different steady-state regimes.

Exclusion processes with avalanches

In an exclusion process with avalanches, when a particle hops to a neighboring empty site which is adjacent to an island the particle on the other end of the island immediately hops, and if it joins another island this triggers another hop. There are no restrictions on the length of the islands and the duration of the avalanche. This process is well defined in the low-density region ρ < 1/2. We describe the nature of steady states (on a ring) and determine all correlation functions. For the asymmetric version of the process, we compute the steady state current, and we describe shock and rarefaction waves which arise in the evolution of the step-function initial profile. For the symmetric version, we determine the diffusion coefficient and examine the evolution of a tagged particle.

Driven surface diffusion with detailed balance and elastic phase transitions

Driven surface diffusion occurs, for example, in molecular beam epitaxy when particles are deposited under an oblique angle. Elastic phase transitions happen when normal modes in crystals become soft due to the vanishing of certain elastic constants. We show that these seemingly entirely disparate systems fall under appropriate conditions into the same universality class. We derive the field-theoretic Hamiltonian for this universality class, and we use renormalized field theory to calculate critical exponents and logarithmic corrections for several experimentally relevant quantities.

Spatiotemporally complete condensation in a non-Poissonian exclusion process

We investigate a non-Poissonian version of the asymmetric simple exclusion process, motivated by the observation that coarse graining the interactions between particles in complex systems generically leads to a stochastic process with a non-Markovian (history-dependent) character. We characterize a large family of one-dimensional hopping processes using a waiting-time distribution for individual particle hops. We find that when its variance is infinite, a real-space condensate forms that is complete in space (involves all particles) and time (exists at almost any given instant) in the thermodynamic limit. The mechanism for the onset and stability of the condensate is rather subtle and depends on the microscopic dynamics subsequent to a failed particle hop attempt.

Living clusters and crystals from low-density suspensions of active colloids

Recent studies aimed at investigating artificial analogs of bacterial colonies have shown that low-density suspensions of self-propelled particles confined in two dimensions can assemble into finite aggregates that merge and split, but have a typical size that remains constant (living clusters). In this Letter, we address the problem of the formation of living clusters and crystals of active particles in three dimensions. We study two systems: self-propelled particles interacting via a generic attractive potential and colloids that can move toward each other as a result of active agents (e.g., by molecular motors). In both cases, fluidlike "living" clusters form. We explain this general feature in terms of the balance between active forces and regression to thermodynamic equilibrium. This balance can be quantified in terms of a dimensionless number that allows us to collapse the observed clustering behavior onto a universal curve. We also discuss how active motion affects the kinetics of crystal formation.

Restoration ecology: two-sex dynamics and cost minimization

We model a spatially detailed, two-sex population dynamics, to study the cost of ecological restoration. We assume that cost is proportional to the number of individuals introduced into a large habitat. We treat dispersal as homogeneous diffusion in a one-dimensional reaction-diffusion system. The local population dynamics depends on sex ratio at birth, and allows mortality rates to differ between sexes. Furthermore, local density dependence induces a strong Allee effect, implying that the initial population must be sufficiently large to avert rapid extinction. We address three different initial spatial distributions for the introduced individuals; for each we minimize the associated cost, constrained by the requirement that the species must be restored throughout the habitat. First, we consider spatially inhomogeneous, unstable stationary solutions of the model’s equations as plausible candidates for small restoration cost. Second, we use numerical simulations to find the smallest rectangular cluster, enclosing a spatially homogeneous population density, that minimizes the cost of assured restoration. Finally, by employing simulated annealing, we minimize restoration cost among all possible initial spatial distributions of females and males. For biased sex ratios, or for a significant between-sex difference in mortality, we find that sex-specific spatial distributions minimize the cost. But as long as the sex ratio maximizes the local equilibrium density for given mortality rates, a common homogeneous distribution for both sexes that spans a critical distance yields a similarly low cost.

Interacting nonequilibrium systems with two temperatures

We investigate a simplified model of two fully connected magnetic systems maintained at different temperatures by virtue of being connected to two independent thermal baths while simultaneously being interconnected with each other. Using generating functional analysis, commonly used in statistical mechanics, we find exactly soluble expressions for their individual magnetization that define a two-dimensional nonlinear map, the equations of which have the same form as those obtained for densely connected equilibrium systems. Steady states correspond to the fixed points of this map, separating the parameter space into a rich set of nonequilibrium phases that we analyze in asymptotically high and low (nonequilibrium) temperature limits. The theoretical formalism is shown to revert to the classical nonequilibrium steady state problem for two interacting systems with a nonzero heat transfer between them that catalyzes a phase transition between ambient nonequilibrium states.

Surface criticality at a dynamic phase transition

In order to elucidate the role of surfaces at nonequilibrium phase transitions, we consider kinetic Ising models with surfaces subjected to a periodic oscillating magnetic field. Whereas, the corresponding bulk system undergoes a continuous nonequilibrium phase transition characterized by the exponents of the equilibrium Ising model, we find that the nonequilibrium surface exponents do not coincide with those of the equilibrium critical surface. In addition, in three space dimensions, the surface phase diagram of the nonequilibrium system differs markedly from that of the equilibrium system.

Nonequilibrium relaxation and critical aging for driven Ising lattice gases

We employ Monte Carlo simulations to study the nonequilibrium relaxation of driven Ising lattice gases in two dimensions. Whereas the temporal scaling of the density autocorrelation function in the nonequilibrium steady state does not allow a precise measurement of the critical exponents, these can be accurately determined from the aging scaling of the two-time autocorrelations and the order parameter evolution following a quench to the critical point. We obtain excellent agreement with renormalization group predictions based on the standard Langevin representation of driven Ising lattice gases.

Phase diagram and density large deviations of a nonconserving ABC model

The effect of particle-nonconserving processes on the steady state of driven diffusive systems is studied within the context of a generalized ABC model. It is shown that in the limit of slow nonconserving processes, the large deviation function of the overall particle density can be computed by making use of the steady-state density profile of the conserving model. In this limit one can define a chemical potential and identify first order transitions via Maxwell's construction, similarly to what is done in equilibrium systems. This method may be applied to other driven models subjected to slow nonconserving dynamics.

Long-range steady-state density profiles induced by localized drive

We show that the presence of a localized drive in an otherwise diffusive system results in steady-state density and current profiles that decay algebraically to their global average value, away from the drive in two or higher dimensions. An analogy to an electrostatic problem is established, whereby the density profile induced by a driving bond maps onto the electrostatic potential due to an electric dipole located along the bond. The dipole strength is proportional to the drive, and is determined self-consistently by solving the electrostatic problem. The profile resulting from a localized configuration of more than one driving bond can be straightforwardly determined by the superposition principle of electrostatics. This picture is shown to hold even in the presence of exclusion interaction between particles.

Slow relaxation and aging kinetics for the driven lattice gas

We numerically investigate the long-time behavior of the density-density autocorrelation function in driven lattice gases with particle exclusion and periodic boundary conditions in one, two, and three dimensions using precise Monte Carlo simulations. In the one-dimensional asymmetric exclusion process on a ring with half the lattice sites occupied, we find that correlations induce extremely slow relaxation to the asymptotic power law decay. We compare the crossover functions obtained from our simulations with various analytic results in the literature and analyze the characteristic oscillations that occur in finite systems away from half-filling. As expected, in three dimensions correlations are weak and consequently the mean-field description is adequate. We also investigate the relaxation toward the nonequilibrium steady state in the two-time density-density autocorrelations, starting from strongly correlated initial conditions. We obtain simple aging scaling behavior in one, two, and three dimensions, with the expected power laws.

Fluctuations and symmetries in two-dimensional active gels

Motivated by the unique physical properties of biological active matter, e.g., cytoskeletal dynamics in eukaryotic cells, we set up effective two-dimensional (2d) coarse-grained hydrodynamic equations for the dynamics of thin active gels with polar or nematic symmetries. We use the well-known three-dimensional (3d) descriptions (K. Kruse et al., Eur. Phys. J. E 16, 5 (2005); A. Basu et al., Eur. Phys. J. E 27, 149 (2008)) for thin active-gel samples confined between parallel plates with appropriate boundary conditions to derive the effective 2d constitutive relations between appropriate thermodynamic fluxes and generalised forces for small deviations from equilibrium. We consider three distinct cases, characterised by spatial symmetries and boundary conditions, and show how such considerations dictate the structure of the constitutive relations. We use these to study the linear instabilities, calculate the correlation functions and the diffusion constant of a small tagged particle, and elucidate their dependences on the activity or nonequilibrium drive.

Monte Carlo study of the phase transition in the critical behavior of the Ising model with shear

The critical behavior of the Ising model with nonconserved dynamics and an external driving field mimicking a shear profile is analyzed by studying its dynamical evolution in the short-time regime. Starting from high-temperature disordered configurations (fully disordered configurations, FDC), the critical temperature Tc is determined when the order parameter, defined as the absolute value of the transversal spin profile, exhibits a power-law behavior with an exponent that is a combination of some of the critical exponents of the transition. For each value of the shear field magnitude, labeled as gamma, Tc has been estimated and two stages have been found: (1) a growing stage at low values of gamma, where Tc approximately gammapsi and psi=0.52(3), and (2) a saturation regime at large gamma. The same values of Tc(gamma) were found studying the dynamical evolution from the ground-state configuration with all spins pointing in the same direction. By combining the exponents of the corresponding power laws obtained from each initial configuration, the set of critical exponents was calculated. These values, at large external field magnitude, define a critical behavior different from that of the Ising model and of other driven lattice gases.

Fermionized photons in an array of driven dissipative nonlinear cavities

We theoretically investigate the optical response of a one-dimensional array of strongly nonlinear optical microcavities. When the optical nonlinearity is much larger than both losses and intercavity tunnel coupling, the nonequilibrium steady state of the system is reminiscent of a strongly correlated Tonks-Girardeau gas of impenetrable bosons. Signatures of strong correlations are identified in the transmission spectrum of the system, as well as in the intensity correlations of the transmitted light. Possible experimental implementations in state-of-the-art solid-state devices are discussed.

Driven on- and off-lattice gas

An on- and off-lattice analog of the driven lattice gas has been studied by molecular-dynamics simulation. In the model, particles move on a two-dimensional lattice potential under a constant driving force. They also interact with each other by an attractive square-well pair potential. A heat bath removes as heat the work done by the driving field. The case of zero field recovers equilibrium two-dimensional lattice and continuous-space results. With nonzero field and a strong lattice potential, the system is comparable to the driven lattice gas. As in the driven lattice gas, the anisotropic single-strip configuration persists to higher kinetic energy as the field strength increases. In the case of zero lattice strength, the model reduces to an off-lattice two-dimensional driven square-well fluid. Single-strip steady states are not observed off lattice.

Scaling exponents and transition behavior of the generalized conserved lattice gas model at zero temperature

We study a generalized conserved lattice gas model in two dimensions by introducing an effective temperature to the conserved lattice gas model, where the number of particles is conserved during the dynamical process. We apply Monte Carlo simulation with the Metropolis transition rate. At zero temperature we find two transition behaviors; one between the localized active states and absorbing states and the other between the localized active states and active states. With a different definition of the order parameter for the second transition behavior, we obtain the critical exponents at the transition point.

Boundary-induced abrupt transition in the symmetric exclusion process

We investigate the role of the boundary in the symmetric simple exclusion process with competing nonlocal and local hopping events. With open boundaries, the system undergoes a first-order phase transition from a finite density phase to an empty road phase as the nonlocal hopping rate increases. Using a cluster stability analysis, we determine the location of such an abrupt nonequilibrium phase transition, which agrees well with numerical results. Our cluster analysis provides physical insight into the mechanism behind this transition. We also explain why the transition becomes discontinuous in contrast to the case with periodic boundary conditions, in which the continuous phase transition has been observed.
