Abstract
BACKGROUND Instead of completely suppressing blood vessels inside tumors, vascular normalization therapy is proposed to normalize and prune the abnormal vasculature in tumor microenvironment (TME) to acquire a normal and stable blood flow and perfusion. The theoretical basis for the use of "blood-activating and stasis-resolving" formulas in Traditional Chinese Medicine to treat cancer is highly consistent with the principle of vascular normalization therapy, suggesting the potential application of these traditional formulas in vascular normalization therapy. PURPOSE To study the underlying mechanisms of a classical "blood-activating and stasis-resolving" formula, Taohong Siwu decoction (TSD), in enhancing the efficacy of chemotherapy for breast cancer treatment. STUDY DESIGN HUVECs and transgenic zebrafish embryos were used as the major model in vitro. A 4T1 mouse breast cancer model was applied to study tumor vasculature normalization of TSD and the combination effects with DOX. RESULTS Our data showed that TSD exhibited anti-angiogenic potential in HUVECs and transgenic zebrafish embryos. After 20 days treatment, TSD significantly normalized the tumor vasculature by remodeling vessel structure, reducing intratumoral hypoxia and vessel leakage, and promoting vessel maturation and blood perfusion in 4T1 breast tumor-bearing mice. Moreover, the anti-tumor efficacy of doxorubicin liposome in 4T1 breast tumors was significantly improved by TSD, including the suppression of tumor cell proliferation, angiogenesis, hypoxia, and the increase of cell apoptosis, which is likely through the vascular normalization induced by TSD. TSD also shifted the macrophage polarization from M2 to M1 phenotype in TME during the combination therapy, as evidenced by the reduced number of CD206+ macrophages and increased number of CD86+ macrophages. Additionally, TSD treatment protected against doxorubicin-induced cardiotoxicity in animals, as evidenced by the reduced cardiomyocytes apoptosis and improved heart function. CONCLUSION This study demonstrated for the first time that TSD as a classical Chinese formula can enhance the drug efficacy and reduce the side effects of doxorubicin. These findings can support that TSD could be used as an adjuvant therapy in combination with conventional chemotherapy for the future breast cancer treatment.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Breast cancer (BC) is the second leading cause of tumor-related mortality after lung cancer. Chemotherapy resistance remains a major challenge to progress in BC treatment, warranting further exploration of feasible and effective alternative therapies. AIM To analyzed the quality of life (QoL) and survival of patients with BC treated with integrated traditional Chinese and Western medicine (TCM-WM). METHODS This study included 226 patients with BC admitted to the First Affiliated Hospital of Guangxi University of Traditional Chinese Medicine between February 2018 and February 2023, including 100 who received conventional Western medicine treatment (control group) and 126 who received TCM-WM treatment (research group). The total effective rate, side effects (alopecia, nausea and vomiting, hepatorenal toxicity, and myelosuppression), QoL assessed using the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Core Quality of Life Questionnaire (EORTC QLQ-C30), 1-year overall survival (OS), recurrence and metastasis rates, and serum inflammatory factors [interleukin (IL)-6, IL-10, and tumor necrosis factor alpha] were comparatively analyzed. RESULTS The research group showed statistically better overall efficacy, EORTC QoL-C30 scores, and 1-year OS than the control group, with markedly lower side effects and 1-year recurrence and metastasis rates. Moreover, the posttreatment levels of serum inflammatory in the research group were significantly lower than the baseline and those in the control group. CONCLUSION Overall, TCM-WM demonstrated significantly improved therapeutic efficacy while ensuring drug safety in BC, which not only improved patients' QoL and prolonged survival, but also significantly inhibited the inflammatory response.

Abstract
Background Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), has been used for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) at every therapeutic stage, even before tumor formation. However, the efficacy of TCM in reducing the incidence of HCC in patients with chronic hepatitis B-related cirrhosis remains unclear. This study aims to address this gap. Methods Publications were collected from PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, CNKI, Sino Med, VIP, and Wan Fang Databases. Relative risk (RR) was calculated with a 95 % confidence interval (CI). Heterogeneity was assessed. The Cochrane Collaboration's tool was used to assess the risk of bias. Results 10 studies with 2702 patients showed that the combination therapy significantly reduced the incidence of HCC in patients with post-hepatitis B cirrhosis at 1, 3, and 5 years. However, the preventive effects of TCM were in compensated cirrhosis, but not the decompensated cirrhosis. Furthermore, TCM correlated with improved liver function and enhanced virological response. Conclusion Combination therapy with TCM demonstrated the certain potential in reducing the incidence of HCC in patients with hepatitis B cirrhosis. This is attrinuted to the improvement of liver function and enhancement of the viral response. However, the efficacy of TCM in the field still needs more high-quality RCTs to provide stronger evidence in the future.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study aims to investigate the knowledge of rural general practitioners (GPs) in esophageal cancer (EC) prevention and treatment in China and analyze relevant influencing factors, so as to improve the ability of rural GPs in EC prevention and treatment. METHODS This cross-sectional study was conducted from November 5, 2021, to November 20, 2021. A self-designed questionnaire was used to conduct an online survey. Multivariable logistic regression models were used to identify the influencing factors of knowledge proficiency of GPs in rural China for EC prevention and treatment. RESULTS This study included 348 participants from 12 rural areas in Hebei Province. The mean accuracy rate on all question items was 42.3% ± 10.67%. Sex (OR = 2.870, 95% CI: 1.519-5.423), educational level (OR = 3.256, 95% CI: 1.135-9.339), and comprehension of clinical practice guidelines for EC (OR = 4.305, 95% CI: 2.023-9.161) were significant predictors for GPs' knowledge proficiency of EC prevention and treatment (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS The study indicated that knowledge proficiency of rural GPs of EC prevention and control still awaits to be improved. Sex, educational level, and comprehension of clinical practice guidelines for EC were significant predictors for their proficiency.

Abstract
Cancer is one of the deadliest diseases affecting the health of human beings. With limited therapeutic options available, complementary and alternative medicine has been widely adopted in cancer management and is increasingly becoming accepted by both patients and healthcare workers alike. Chinese medicine characterized by its unique diagnostic and treatment system is the most widely applied complementary and alternative medicine. It emphasizes symptoms and ZHENG (syndrome)-based treatment combined with contemporary disease diagnosis and further stratifies patients into individualized medicine subgroups. As a representative cancer with the highest degree of malignancy, pancreatic cancer is traditionally classified into the "amassment and accumulation". Emerging perspectives define the core pathogenesis of pancreatic cancer as "dampness-heat" and the respective treatment "clearing heat and resolving dampness" has been demonstrated to prolong survival in pancreatic cancer patients, as has been observed in many other cancers. This clinical advantage encourages an exploration of the essence of dampness-heat ZHENG (DHZ) in cancer and investigation into underlying mechanisms of action of herbal formulations against dampness-heat. However, at present, there is a lack of understanding of the molecular characteristics of DHZ in cancer and no standardized and widely accepted animal model to study this core syndrome in vivo. The shortage of animal models limits the ability to uncover the antitumor mechanisms of herbal medicines and to assess the safety profile of the natural products derived from them. This review summarizes the current research on DHZ in cancer in terms of the clinical aspects, molecular landscape, and animal models. This study aims to provide comprehensive insight that can be used for the establishment of a future standardized ZHENG-based cancer animal model.

Abstract
Objective To explore the difference in gut microbiota between different traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) syndromes in patients with colorectal cancer (CRC) and its internal relationship. Methods From June 2020 to August 2021, 109 colorectal cancer patients with a clear pathological diagnosis who had not yet undergone surgery or chemotherapy were classified according to the TCM syndrome classification, and the feces samples of 109 patients with preoperative colorectal cancer were collected. 16s rRNA gene sequencing was used to determine gut microbiota diversity and abundance in CRC patients with different TCM syndrome, and LEfSe analysis was made to screen different TCM syndrome for differential representative microbiota. Results 109 patients were divided into 5 syndromes by TCM syndrome classification, which were Liver and Kidney Yin Deficiency Syndrome (LKYDS, n = 19), Spleen Deficient Qi Stagnation Syndrome (SDQSS, n = 30), Stasis and Poison Obstruction Syndrome (SPOS, n = 17), Damp-Heat Syndrome (DHS, n = 30), Qi and Blood Deficiency Syndrome (QBDS, n = 13). Alpha diversity index showed significant differences among the five groups of TCM syndromes, with Shannon index being highest in the SDQSS group and lowest in the LKYDS (p = 0.003). ACE index being highest in the SDQSS group and lowest in the SPOS (p = 0.010). PD whole tree index being highest in the SDQSS group and lowest in the SPOS (p = 0.017). Similarly, beta diversity showed significant differences among the five groups of TCM syndromes, with principal coordinate analysis (PCo1 = 31.86 %, PCo2 = 5.62 %) showing separation and coincidence between the groups, and Adonis group differences showing coincidence between the QBDS-LKYDS (p = 0.702), QBDS-DHS (p = 0.133), and SDQSS-DHS (p = 0.260) groups. LEfSe analysis revealed that the representative microbiota of DHS patients was Dialister sp Marseille P5638 (LDA = 3.05, p<0.001), the representative microbiota of SPOS patients was Oscillospirales (LDA = 4.78, p = 0.029), the representative microbiota of SDQSS patients was Selenomonadaceae (LDA = 3.94, p = 0.003), the representative microbiota of LKYDS patients was Dialister (LDA = 4.19, p = 0.001), and the representative microbiota of QBDS patients was Akkermansia muciniphila (LDA = 4.23, p = 0.006). Conclusions There are significant differences in gut microbiota between different TCM syndromes in CRC patients. The five microbiota, Dialister sp Marseille P5638, Oscillospirales, Selenomonadaceae, Dialister, and Akkermansia muciniphila, may be differential markers of TCM syndrome in CRC and are expected to be one of the bases for accurate TCM syndrome differentiation of CRC.

Abstract
Yiwei decoction (YWD) is a formula of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) that is clinically effective for the prevention and treatment of gastric cancer recurrence and metastasis. According to the theory of TCM, YWD tonifies the body and strengthens the body's resistance to gastric cancer recurrence and metastasis potentially via the immune regulation of the spleen. The aims of the present study were to investigate whether YWD-treated spleen-derived exosomes in rats inhibit the proliferation of tumor cells, to elucidate the anticancer effects of YWD, and to provide evidence supporting the use of YWD as a new clinical treatment for gastric cancer. Spleen-derived exosomes were obtained by ultracentrifugation and identified by transmission electron microscopy, nanoparticle tracking analysis, and western blot analysis. The location of the exosomes in tumor cells was then determined by immunofluorescence staining. After tumor cells were treated with different concentrations of exosomes, the effect of exosomes on cell proliferation was determined by cell counting kit 8 (CCK8) and colony formation assays. Tumor cell apoptosis was detected by flow cytometry. Particle analysis and western blot analysis identified the material extracted from spleen tissue supernatant as exosomes. Immunofluorescence staining showed that spleen-derived exosomes were taken up by HGC-27 cells, and the CCK8 assay confirmed that the relative tumor inhibition rate of YWD-treated spleen-derived exosomes in the 30 μg/mL reached 70.78% compared to control exosomes in the 30 μg/mL (p < 0.05). Compared to control exosomes in the 30 μg/mL, the colony formation assay indicated that YWD-treated spleen-derived exosomes in the 30 μg/mL colonies have decreased by 99.03% (p < 0.01). Moreover, flow cytometry analysis showed that treatment with YWD-treated exosomes in the 30 μg/mL increased the apoptosis rate to 43.27%, which was significantly higher than that of the control group in the 30 μg/mL (25.91%) (p < 0.05). In conclusion, spleen-derived exosomes from YWD-treated animals inhibit the proliferation of HGC-27 cells via inducing apoptosis, suggesting that spleen-derived exosomes are involved in mediating the antitumor effect of YWD. These results demonstrated a novel exosome-mediated anticancer effect of YWD as a TCM formula, thereby supporting the use of YWD-treated exosomes as a new approach for the clinical treatment of gastric cancer.

Abstract
Lung cancer is one of the most common malignant tumors in China. Most patients are already in the mid to advanced stages during the consultation and the survival rate is less than 23 % with a poor prognosis. Therefore, effective dialectical diagnosis of advanced cancer can guide individualized treatment to improve survival. Phospholipids are the building blocks of cell membranes and abnormal phospholipid metabolism is associated with plentiful diseases. Most studies of disease markers use blood as a sample. However, urine covers extensive metabolites that are produced during the body's metabolic processes. Therefore, the study of markers in urine can be used as a complement to improve the diagnosis rate of marker diseases. Moreover, urine is characterized by high water content, high polarity, and high inorganic salt, therefore the detection of phospholipids in urine is challenging. In this study, an original Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)-titanium dioxide (TiO2) composite film for sample pre-treatment coupled with the LC-MS/MS method for the determination of phospholipids in the urine with high selectivity and low matrix effects was prepared and developed. The extraction process was scientifically optimized by the single-factor test. After systematic validation, the established method was successfully applied to the accurate determination of phospholipid substances in the urine of lung cancer patients and healthy subjects. In conclusion, the developed method has great potential for the development of lipid enrichment analysis in urine and can be used as a beneficial tool for cancer diagnosis and Chinese medicine syndrome typing.

Abstract
Tongue diagnosis is a unique aspect of traditional Chinese medicine for diagnosing diseases before determining proper means of treatment, but it also has the disadvantage of relying on the subjective experience of medical practitioners and lack objective basis. The purpose of this article is to elucidate tongue-coating microbiota and metabolic differences in primary liver cancer (PLC) patients with thick or greasy tongue coatings. Tongue-coating samples were analyzed in 60 PLC patients (30 PLC with thick or greasy tongue-coating patients and 30 PLC with tongue-coating neither thick nor greasy) and 25 healthy controls (HC) using 16S rRNA gene sequencing technology. As compared to healthy individuals, tongue coatings of patients with PLC had elevated levels of Firmicutes and Actinobacteria. The abundance of Fusobacteria, SR1_Absconditabacteria_, and Spirochaete were higher in tongue coatings of healthy controls compared to samples in patients with PLC. In addition to site-specific differences, higher abundances of Fusobacteria and Actinobacteria were observed in thick or greasy tongue-coating patients as compared to non-thick and greasy tongue-coating patients. The inferred metagenomic pathways enriched in the PLC tongue-coating patients were mainly those involved in replication, recombination, and repair of protein. We also identify a tongue-coating microbiome signature to discriminate HC and PLC, including 15 variables on genus level. The prediction performance of the signature showed well in the training and validation cohorts. This research illustrates specific clinical features and bacterial structures in PLC patients with different tongue coatings, which facilitates understanding of the traditional tongue diagnosis.

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE Salvia miltiorrhiza Bunge and Panax ginseng C. A. Meyer have special curative effect on cancer treatment. The optimizing component formula (OCF) extracted from those two herbs was in line with the anti-lung cancer treatment principle of activating blood and supplementing 'Qi'. However, the study on the mechanism of component formula has always been an insurmountable challenge. Nowadays, the application of network pharmacology and artificial intelligence (AI) in the field of TCM provides new ideas for the study of new targets and mechanisms of TCM, which promotes the modernization of TCM. AIM OF THE STUDY This study aims to further explore the anti-lung cancer mechanism of OCF by using an integrated strategy of network pharmacology and AI technology. MATERIALS AND METHODS Bioinformatic analysis was used to analyze the expression levels, prognosis and survival of DTL and PDCD4 in cancer patients. The binding strength of OCF and DTL was simulated by molecular docking, and the affinity between them was detected by Bio-layer interferometry. Network pharmacology was used to predict the active components, potential targets and pathways of OCF. The association between key targets and their corresponding components and DTL was analyzed by Ingenuity Pathway Analysis (IPA). MTT assay, colony formation assay, wound-healing assay and transwell assay were used to verify the inhibitory effects of OCF on lung cancer cells in vitro. qRT-PCR and Western blot assay were used to detect the effects of OCF on mRNA and protein expression of DTL, PDCD4 and key genes in MAPK/JNK pathways. RESULTS Bioinformatics analysis showed that DTL was significantly up-regulated in lung cancer, which was associated with high malignancy rate, high metastasis rate and poor prognosis of primary tumor. PDCD4 was down-regulated in lung cancer, and associated with high metastasis rate and poor prognosis. The good affinity between OCF and DTL was predicted and verified by molecular docking and Bio-layer interferometry. Based on the network pharmacological databases, 40 active components and 220 corresponding targets of OCF were screened out. KEGG analysis showed that OCF component targets were mainly enriched in MAPK signaling pathway. IPA results showed the interrelationship between DTL, PDCD4, MAPK pathway genes and their corresponding OCF components. In addition, in vitro experiments demonstrated anti-lung cancer activity of OCF, as validated, via impairing cell viability and cell proliferation, as well as inhibiting migration and invasion abilities in lung cancer cells. qRT-PCR showed that OCF down-regulated the mRNA expression of DTL, MAP4K1, JNK, c-Jun and c-Myc, and up-regulated the mRNA expression of PDCD4 and P53 genes in A549 lung cancer cells. Western blot suggested that OCF suppressed the protein level of DTL and blocked the ubiquitination of PDCD4 in A549 lung cancer cells, and down-regulated the protein levels of MAP4K1, p-JNK and p-c-Jun while up-regulated the proteins expression level of P53. CONCLUSIONS OCF might elicit an anti-lung cancer effect by blocking DTL-mediated PDCD4 ubiquitination and suppression of the MAPK/JNK pathway. Meanwhile, our work revealed that network pharmacology and AI technology strategy are cogent means of studying the active components and mechanism of TCM.

Abstract
Chinese herbal medicines offer a rich source of anti-cancer drugs. Differences between the pharmacology of Chinese herbal medicines and modern synthetic chemicals hinder the development of drugs derived from herbal products. To address this challenge, novel omics approaches including transcriptomics, proteomics, genomics, metabolomics, and microbiomics have been applied to dissect the pharmacological benefits of Chinese herbal medicines in cancer treatments. Numerous Chinese herbal medicines have shown potential anti-tumor effects on different gastrointestinal (GI) cancers while eliminating the side effects associated with conventional cancer therapies. The present study aimed to provide an overview of recent research focusing on Chinese herbal medicines in GI cancer treatment, based on omics approaches. This review also illustrates the potential utility of omics approaches in herbal-derived drug discovery. Omics approaches can precisely and efficiently reveal the key molecular targets and intracellular interaction networks of Chinese herbal medicines in GI cancer treatment. This study summarizes the application of different omics-based approaches in investigating the effects and mechanisms of Chinese herbal medicines in GI cancers. Future research directions are also proposed for this area of study.

Abstract
Objective This paper aims to explore the relationship between the syndrome differentiation of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) in colorectal cancer and the clinical laboratory indicators of patients, and to further seek the laboratory indicators to assist TCM syndrome differentiation. Methods From May 2020 to June 2021, 122 colorectal cancer patients with a clear pathological diagnosis who had not undergone surgery or chemotherapy were classified according to the TCM syndrome classification. The clinical laboratory indicators of 122 patients with preoperative colorectal cancer were collected, and the correlation between preoperative colorectal cancer TCM syndromes and Karnofsky score and clinical laboratory indicators was analyzed. The indicators affecting TCM syndromes were included in the disordered multivariate logistic regression analysis model to analyze the relative risk of the influencing factors. Results The syndromes of colorectal cancer patients were classified into excess syndrome, deficiency syndrome, and syndrome of intermingled deficiency & excess. The differences in total bilirubin (TBIL), hemoglobin (HB), uric acid (UA), and hematocrit (HCT) between the three groups were statistically significant (P < 0.05). The indexes such as TBIL, HB, UA, and HCT in preoperative patients with excess syndrome of colorectal cancer were higher than those in patients with syndrome of intermingled deficiency & excess and deficiency syndrome, and the comparison between groups using the LSD method showed that UA and HCT were different between the excess syndrome and deficiency syndrome groups (P < 0.05). Multivariate logistic regression analysis indicated that Gender, Tumor location, TNM stage, Total protein (TP), Red blood cell (RBC), HB, HCT, Platelet (PLT) and Fibrinogen (FIB) were all risk factors affecting TCM syndromes of preoperative colorectal cancer (P < 0.05). Conclusion There is a correlation between the TCM syndromes of colorectal cancer and the clinical laboratory indicators of the patients. Gender, Tumor location, TNM stage, TP, RBC, HB, HCT, PLT and FIB are the risk factors of TCM syndrome differentiation in preoperative patients with colorectal cancer. TBIL, UA, HB, and HCT may be the four relevant indicators of TCM syndrome differentiation in colorectal cancer.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Ziyin Huatan Recipe (ZYHT), a traditional Chinese medicine comprised of Lilii Bulbus, Pinelliae Rhizoma, and Hedyotis Diffusa, has shown promise in treating gastric cancer (GC). However, its potential mechanism has not yet been clearly addressed. This study aimed to predict targets and molecular mechanisms of ZYHT in treating GC by network pharmacology analysis and to explore the role of ZYHT in GC both in vitro and in vivo. METHODS Targets and molecular mechanisms of ZYHT were predicted via network pharmacology analysis. The effects of ZYHT on the expression of metastasis-associated targets were further validated by Western blot and quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction. To explore the specific molecular mechanisms of the effects of ZYHT on migration and invasion, the runt-related transcription factor 3 (RUNX3) gene was knocked out by clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats/Cas9, and lentiviral vectors were transfected into SGC-7901 cells. Then lung metastasis model of GC in nude mice was established to explore the anti-metastasis effect of ZYHT. Western blot and immunohistochemistry were used to explore the impact of ZYHT on the expression of metastasis-related proteins with or without RUNX3 gene. RESULTS The network pharmacology analysis showed that ZYHT might inhibit focal adhesion, migration, invasion and metastasis of GC. ZYHT inhibited the proliferation, migration and invasion of GC cells in vitro via regulating the expression of metastasis-associated targets. Knocking out RUNX3 almost completely reversed the cell phenotypes (migration and invasion) and protein expression levels elicited by ZYHT. In vivo studies showed that ZYHT inhibited the metastasis of GC cells to the lung and prolonged the survival time of the nude mice. Knocking out RUNX3 partly reversed the metastasis of GC cells to the lung and the protein expression levels elicited by ZYHT. CONCLUSION ZYHT can effectively inhibit the invasion and migration of GC in vitro and in vivo, and its molecular mechanism may relate to the upregulation of RUNX3 expression.

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE Previously, the total bioflavonoids extract from Selaginella doederleinii (SDTBE) presented favorable in vitro and in vivo activities against non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), hinting at its medicinal potential. However, up to nowadays, targets and integrative action mechanisms of SDTBE are still not very clear, which presents an obstacle to the development of herbal medicine. AIM OF THE STUDY The present study aimed to disclose the potential targets and integrative action mechanism of SDTBE against NSCLC. MATERIALS AND METHODS A system pharmacology-based strategy including target fishing, network pharmacology analysis and molecular docking were applied to predict the potential targets and pathways for the seven main active ingredients in SDTBE. A proteomics study was subsequently performed for validating the affected pathways and possible targets. Western blot assay, mouse xenograft tumor model and immunofluorescence assays were used to further confirm the key targets and integrative action mechanisms of SDTBE against NSCLC. RESULTS By system pharmacology, it was inferred that SDTBE could mainly act on mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) and PI3K-AKT signaling pathways by targeting epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), protein kinase B (AKT) and mitogen-activated or extracellular signal-regulated protein kinase (MEK), which was validated by proteomics results, and further confirmed in vitro and in vivo by Western blot and immunofluorescence assays. CONCLUSION SDTBE targeting multi-targets including EGFR, AKT and MEK could exert its anti-NSCLC effect mainly via MAPK and PI3K-AKT signaling pathways.

Abstract
Background Lung cancer remains the leading cause of mortality from malignant tumors, non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) accounts for the majority of lung cancer cases, and individualized diagnosis and treatment is an effective trend. The individual characteristics of different traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) syndromes of NSCLC patients may be revealed by highly specific molecular profiles. Methods In this study, 10 NSCLC patients with Qi deficiency and Yin deficiency (QDYD) syndrome and 10 patients with Qi deficiency of lung-spleen (QDLS) syndrome in TNM stage III-IV as well as 10 healthy volunteers were enrolled. Aiming at the varied syndromes of NSCLC patients with “Yin deficiency” as the main difference, a proteomics research based on data-independent acquisition (DIA) was developed. Of the dysregulated proteins in NSCLC patients, lipid metabolism was significantly enriched. Thereafter, nontargeted lipidomics research based on UPLC-Q-TOF/MS was performed in 16 patients, with 8 individuals randomly selected from each syndrome group. Furthermore, the considerably different characteristics between the syndromes and pathological mechanisms of NSCLC were screened by statistical and biological integrations of proteomics and lipidomics and the differential metabolic pathways of the two similar syndromes were further explored. Besides, lipids biomarkers were verified by a clinically used anticancer Chinese medicine, and the level of key differential proteins in the two syndromes was also validated using ELISA. Results The results showed that glycerophospholipid metabolism, sphingolipid metabolism, glycolipid metabolism, and primary bile acid biosynthesis were altered in NSCLC patients and that glycerophospholipid metabolism was significantly changed between the two syndromes in lipidomics analysis. Among the proteins and lipids, ALDOC and lysophosphatidylcholine (LPCs) were revealed to have a strong relationship by statistical and biological integration analysis, and could effectively distinguish QDLS and QDYD syndromes. Notably, the patients with different syndromes had the most typical metabolic patterns in glycerophospholipid metabolism and glycolysis, reflecting the differences in the syndromes dominated by “Yin deficiency”. Conclusions ALDOC and LPCs could be employed for the differentiation of NSCLC patients with QDLS and QDYD syndromes, and “Yin deficiency” might be associated with glycerophospholipid metabolism and glycolysis pathway. The results provided a theoretical basis for “Syndrome differentiation” in TCM diagnosis. Moreover, the developed integrated strategy could also provide a reference for individualized diagnosis and treatment of other diseases. Abstract
Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the most common primary cancers, and its pathogenesis is complicated and difficult to screen. Currently, there is no effective treatment. In traditional Chinese medicine, a large proportion of patients with HCC have been diagnosed with spleen deficiency (SD) syndrome and treated with tonifying traditional Chinese medicine, which has significant clinical efficacy. However, the role and molecular mechanism of SD in HCC remain unclear. In this study, 40 mice were randomly divided into four groups: control, SD, HCC, and SD-HCC groups. The liver cancer model of SD was established by reserpine induction and orthotopic transplantation. The effects of SD on the proliferation, apoptosis, invasion, and metastasis of HCC cells were studied by cell proliferation, cell apoptosis, cell scratch, and transwell assay. We found that compared with the HCC group, the protein expressions of cytotoxic T lymphocyte antigen 4 (CTLA-4), programmed cell death protein 1 (PD-1), phosphatase and tensin homolog (PTEN), and AKT (also known as protein kinase B or PKB) in the exosomes of the SD-HCC group were upregulated. In addition, the metastases and self-renewal of exosomes in the SD-HCC group were more aggressive than those in the HCC group, which could be partially reversed with the addition of CTLA-4 inhibitors. Further studies showed that in the internal environment of SD, CTLA-4 promoted tumor invasion and metastasis by regulating the PTEN/CD44 pathway. In conclusion, our findings suggest that during SD in the internal environment, exosome CTLA-4 regulates the PTEN/CD44 signal pathway to promote the proliferation, self-renewal, and metastasis of liver cancer.

Abstract
Recent advances in nanotechnology have opened up new avenues for the controlled synthesis of nanoparticles for biomedical and pharmaceutical applications. Chinese herbal medicine is a natural gift to humanity, and it has long been used as an antibacterial and anticancer agent. This study will highlight recent developments in the phytonanotechnological synthesis of Chinese herbal medicines to utilize their bioactive components in biomedical and therapeutic applications. Biologically synthesized silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have emerged as a promising alternative to chemical and physical approaches for various biomedical applications. The comprehensive rationale of combinational or synergistic effects of Chinese herb-based AgNPs synthesis was investigated with superior physicochemical and biological properties, and their biomedical applications, including antimicrobial and anticancer activity and wound healing properties. AgNPs can damage the cell ultrastructure by triggering apoptosis, which includes the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), DNA disintegration, protein inactivation, and the regulation of various signaling pathways. However, the anticancer mechanism of Chinese herbal medicine-based AgNPs is more complicated due to the potential toxicity of AgNPs. Further in-depth studies are required to address Chinese herbs' various bioactive components and AgNPs as a synergistic approach to combat antimicrobial resistance, therapeutic efficiency of drug delivery, and control and prevention of newly emerged diseases.

Abstract
The cold-heat syndrome type (ZHENG) is one of the essential elements of syndrome differentiation in East Asian Medicine. This pilot study aimed to explore the characteristics of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients treated with immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) based on the cold-heat syndrome type. Twenty NSCLC patients treated with ICI monotherapy were included in the study and completed the cold-heat syndrome differentiation questionnaire. Demographic and clinical characteristics of the included patients were obtained through electronic medical records. Additionally, blood samples of 10 patients were analyzed with cytokine level and immune profiling. Patients were divided into two groups of cold type (n = 9) and non-cold type (n = 11), according to the cold symptoms questionnaire's cutoff point. No significant difference between the two groups was observed in clinical response to ICIs (p=0.668). Progression-free survival (PFS) seemed to be longer in patients with non-cold type than cold type (p=0.332). In patients with adenocarcinoma, the non-cold type showed longer PFS than the cold type (p=0.036). Also, there were more patients with PD-L1 negative in the cold type compared to the non-cold type (p=0.050). In immune profiling, the proportion of effector memory CD8 T-cells was higher in patients with cold type than with non-cold type (p=0.015), and the proportion of terminal effector CD8 T-cells was lower in patients with cold type than with non-cold type (p=0.005). This pilot study has shown the potential for differences in prognosis and immune status between patients with cold and non-cold types. Hopefully, it provides essential information and insight into NSCLC patients' characteristics from the perspective of syndrome differentiation. Further large-scale observational studies and intervention studies are required.

Abstract
Ovarian cancer is a type of common gynecological tumors with high incidence and poor survival. The anticancer effects of the traditional Chinese medicine Solanum lyratum Thunb (SLT) have been intensively investigated in various cancers but in ovarian cancer is rare. The current study is aimed at investigating the effect of SLT on ovarian cancer cells. Lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and MTT assays indicated that SLT concentrations of 0.25 and 0.5 μg/mL were not cytotoxic and had significant inhibitory effects on the cell viabilities of A2780 and SKOV3 cells, hence were used for subsequent experiments. Flow cytometric and western blot analysis revealed that SLT effectively suppressed ovarian cancer cell proliferation via inducing cell cycle arrest and increasing apoptosis. Cell cycle and apoptosis-related protein expressions were also regulated in SLT-treated cells. Moreover, DCFH-DA and western blot assays demonstrated that SLT enhanced ROS accumulation and subsequently activated the p53 signaling pathway. However, SLT-regulated ovarian cancer cell proliferation, apoptosis, migration, invasion, and EMT were significantly reversed by an ROS inhibitor (NAC, N-acetyl-L-cysteine). Furthermore, A2780 and SKOV3 cells cocultured with M0 macrophages showed that SLT activated the polarization of M0 macrophages to M1 macrophages and inhibited the polarization to M2 macrophages, with the increased percentage of CD86+ cells and decreased percentage of CD206+ cells were detected. In summary, this study illustrated the anticancer effects of SLT on ovarian cancer cells, suggesting that SLT may have the potential to provide basic evidence for the discovery of antiovarian cancer agents.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To explore the molecular bases of Chinese medicine (CM) syndrome classification in chronic hepatitis B (CHB) patients in terms of DNA methylation, transcription and cytokines. METHODS Genome-wide DNA methylation and 48 serum cytokines were detected in CHB patients (DNA methylation: 15 cases; serum cytokines: 62 cases) with different CM syndromes, including dampness and heat of Gan (Liver) and gallbladder (CHB1, DNA methylation: 5 cases, serum cytokines: 15 cases), Gan stagnation and Pi (Spleen) deficiency (CHB2, DNA methylation: 5 cases, serum cytokines: 15 cases), Gan and Shen (Kidney) yin deficiency (CHB3, DNA methylation: 5 cases, serum cytokines: 16 cases), CHB with hidden symptoms (HS, serum cytokines:16 cases) and healthy controls (DNA methylation: 6 cases). DNA methylation of a critical gene was further validated and its mRNA expression was detected on enlarged samples. Genome-wide DNA methylation was detected using Human Methylation 450K Assay and furthered verified using pyrosequencing. Cytokines and mRNA expression of gene were evaluated using multiplex biometric enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA)-based immunoassay and reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR), respectively. RESULTS Totally 28,667 loci, covering 18,403 genes were differently methylated among CHB1, CHB2 and CHB3 (P<0.05 and |Δβ value| > 0.17). Further validation showed that compared with HS, the hg19 CHR6: 29691140 and its closely surrounded 2 CpG loci were demethylated and its mRNA expressions were significantly up-regulated in CHB1 (P<0.05). However, they remained unaltered in CHB2 (P>0.05). Levels of Interleukin (IL)-12 were higher in CHB3 and HS than that in CHB1 and CHB2 groups (P<0.05). Levels of macrophage inflammatory protein (MIP)-1α and MIP-1β were higher in CHB3 than other groups and leukemia inhibitory factor level was higher in CHB1 and HS than CHB2 and CHB3 groups (P<0.05). IL-12, MIP-1α and MIP-1β concentrations were positively correlated with human leukocyte antigen F (HLA-F) mRNA expression (R2=0.238, P<0.05; R2=0.224, P<0.05; R=0.447, P<0.01; respectively). Furthermore, combination of HLA-F mRNA and differential cytokines greatly improved the differentiating accuracy among CHB1, CHB2 and HS. CONCLUSIONS Demethylation of CpG loci in 5' UTR of HLA-F may up-regulate its mRNA expression and HLA-F expression was associated with IL-12, MIP-1α and MIP-1β levels, indicating that HLA-F and the differential cytokines might jointly involve in the classification of CM syndromes in CHB. Abstract
Integrative oncology has developed for about 20 years in some countries; however, integrative oncology is still a relative new term for most China's oncologists. Thus, it is essential to summarize the experience and expertise, share details of differing existing models and discuss future perspectives to help define and guide practice in integrative oncology in China. This study presents a summary of the basic characteristics, status, and challenges of integrative oncology in China, and also reports on China's integrative physicians' service delivery, clinical practice and research patterns of integrative oncology by an online national survey, including 405 oncologists. It is easy for cancer patients to access to integrative therapies in China. Public funding is sufficient for integrative oncology in China, and services are often provided through general hospitals and academic hospitals. Most (95.3%) of oncologists showed a positive attitude toward the development of integrative oncology. More than half (55.6%) of the oncologists worried about the influence on integrative oncology of COVID-19, especially for routine treatment, follow-up and holding seminars. We found that integrative oncology in China has swiftly developed in recent years. However, we suggest that standard diagnosis and treatment patterns and national professional guidelines should be set up as soon as possible.

Abstract
Background To explore the activity of Modified Tongyou Decoction (MTD) against Eca109 esophageal cancer (EC) cell invasion and metastasis and to ascertain the mechanism of its anticancer activity during the epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) as mediated by the HIF-1α-Snail axis. Methods Herbal compounds were prepared by ethanol extraction, and 6 herbs composing into MTD were dipped in water-free ethanol and filtered. The filtrate was collected and centrifuged. The remains were concentrated into a paste which was adjusted to 5000mg/mL concentration with DMSO. PBS was used to dilute the herbal solution to the half maximal inhibitory concentration. A hypoxic microenvironment was induced with CoCl2 in RPMI 1640 medium, in which Eca109 cells were cultured. The cytotoxicity of MTD was determined with CCK-8 assay. The activity of MTD against cell invasion and metastasis was explored with scratch assay and transwell assay. Western blot analysis was conducted to analyze the anticancer effects of MTD on the expression of HIF-1α-Snail axis- and EMT-related proteins. Quantitative RT-PCR was used to assess the mRNA expression of Snail. Immunofluorescence labeling was performed to examine how MTD affected the coexpression of Snail and HIF-1α. Results The fifty percent inhibitory dose of MTD was 1410 μg/mL in the normoxic environment and 1823 μg/mL in the hypoxic environment based on the CCK-8 assay. The scratch assay showed that MTD significantly inhibited cell migration in both the normoxic and hypoxic microenvironments compared with the control groups (P < 0.05). The transwell assay showed that MTD significantly inhibited cell invasion in both the normoxic and hypoxic environments compared with the control groups (P < 0.05). Western blot showed that MTD significantly inhibited the expression of the HIF-1α, Snail, Vimentin, MMP-2, MMP-9, and VE-cadherin proteins and significantly induced the expression of E-cadherin in both the normoxic and hypoxic microenvironments compared with the control groups (P < 0.05). qRT-PCR indicated that MTD significantly inhibited Snail mRNA expression compared with that in the control groups (P < 0.05). Immunofluorescence assay showed that MTD significantly inhibited the coexpression of HIF-1α and Snail in both the normoxic and hypoxic microenvironments compared with the control groups (P < 0.05). Conclusion MTD downregulated HIF-1α-Snail axis- and EMT-related proteins to inhibit EC cell invasion and metastasis in both the normoxic and hypoxic environments.

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE Laryngeal carcinoma (LC) is one of the most common malignant head and neck cancers with high incidence and mortality rates. Erchen decoction plus Huiyanzhuyu decoction (EHD) is commonly used for treating LC patients and produces beneficial results. However, the mechanisms underlying the effects of EHD remain unclear. AIM OF THE STUDY The present study aimed to analyse the anticancer effects of EHD on the LC cell cycle, apoptosis, migration and invasion in vitro and to explore the underlying biological mechanisms. MATERIALS AND METHODS TU212 and Hep-2 cells were used. The antitumour effects of EHD were detected by CCK8, microscopy, flow cytometry, EdU incorporation, Hoechst 33342 staining, wound-healing, and transwell assays to assess viability, morphology, apoptosis, cell cycle, migration and invasion, respectively. Furthermore, STAT3 and related proteins were evaluated in laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC) cells by Western blot (WB) analysis. RESULTS EHD treatment significantly decreased STAT3 and p-STAT3 protein expression levels in LSCC cells. EHD blocked the cell cycle at the G0/G1 phase and induced LSCC apoptosis. Moreover, the viability, migration, and invasion of LSCC cells were markedly inhibited by EHD. In addition, the expression of the cell cycle-related proteins cyclin D1 and cyclin B1 was downregulated in LSCC cells, but P27 expression was increased after EHD treatment. Regarding apoptosis-related proteins, EHD also reduced Bcl-2 expression but upregulated Bax and caspase-3 expression in LSCC cells. In the migration- and invasion-related protein analyses, EHD downregulated MMP-9 expression and upregulated E-cadherin expression. CONCLUSIONS These results suggest that EHD has an anticancer effect in LSCC. EHD treatment induces apoptosis and inhibits the cell cycle, migration and invasion of LSCC cells, but further work is warranted to address the mechanisms.

Abstract
Cancer cachexia is a multifactorial metabolic syndrome that affects ∼50%-80% of cancer patients, and no effective therapy for cancer cachexia is presently available. In traditional Chinese medicine, a large portion of patients with cancer cachexia was diagnosed as spleen deficiency syndrome and treated with tonifying TCMs that produce clinic benefits. In this study we established a new animal model of spleen deficiency and cancer cachexia in mice and evaluated the therapeutic effects of atractylenolide I, an active component of tonifying TCM BaiZhu, in the mouse model. Cancer cachexia was induced in male BALB/c mice by inoculation of mouse C26 colon adenocarcinoma cells, whereas spleen deficiency syndrome was induced by treating the mice with spleen deficiency-inducing factors, including limited feeding, fatigue, and purging. The mouse model was characterized by both cachexia and spleen deficiency characteristics, including significant body weight loss, cancer growth, muscle atrophy, fat lipolysis, spleen, and thymus atrophy as compared with healthy control mice, cancer cachexia mice, and spleen deficiency mice. Oral administration of atractylenolide I (20 mg· kg-1per day, for 30 days) significantly ameliorated the reduction in body weight and atrophy of muscle, fat, spleen, and thymus in mice with spleen deficiency and cachexia. The established model of spleen deficiency and cancer cachexia might be useful in the future for screening possible anticachexia TCMs and clarifying their mechanisms.

Abstract
Background Chemotherapy after surgery for breast cancer plays a fundamental role in reducing the risk of distant and local recurrence. An increasing number of patients seek traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) during adjuvant chemotherapy to relieve symptom discomfort and side effects as well as to strengthen the body’s defenses. However, evidence on how concurrent TCM treatment affects prognosis is scarce. This trial aims to evaluate the association between TCM treatment and disease-free survival outcomes for patients with early breast cancer who are undergoing adjuvant chemotherapy. Methods/design This is a non-randomized, single center, prospective cohort study begun in November 2018 in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. A sample of 310 participants diagnosed with early breast cancer was recruited from the Breast Cancer Research Team and will be followed up every 3 to 6 months until October 2023. Detailed information of the participants, including general information, history of cancer, quality of life, side effects and safety of treatment, TCM body constitution, and meridian energy analysis, was collected face to face at baseline. Discussion This is the first prospective observational cohort study on TCM in patients with early breast cancer who are receiving adjuvant chemotherapy to evaluate the prognosis. Through this trial, we hope to assess the feasibility of a larger-scale clinical trial in the future and formulate an integrated TCM care program. Trial registration ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT03797248. Abstract
BACKGROUND A growing number of studies suggest that Gualou Xiebai Banxia (GLXBBX) decoction, a well-known Chinese herbal formula, has beneficial effects on eliminating angina pectoris symptoms and improving condition of stable angina pectoris (SAP) patients. However, whether this treatment is effective and safe for SAP or not, evidence supporting the effectiveness and safety of this treatment is still incomplete. Besides, there is lack of systematic review to assess the detailed situation (including risk of bias and methodology) of current related clinical studies. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of GLXBBX in treating SAP. METHODS The major databases (MEDLINE, Embase, the Cochrane Library, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Chinese Scientific Journals Database (VIP) Database, Chinese Biomedical Database (CBM), Chinese Biomedical Literature Service System (SinoMed), and Wanfang Database) were searched from inception to March 2019. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of GLXBBX alone or combined with conventional drugs against conventional drugs for SAP were identified. Two assessors reviewed each trial independently. The methodological quality of the eligible studies was evaluated according to the Cochrane Collaboration's tool for assessing risk of bias. Both the data extraction and the literature quality screening evaluation were conducted independently by 2 researchers. RESULT Totally 17 clinical RCTs were included in this study, involving 1676 patients. Due to the high probability of bias of the included studies, it was inappropriate to undertake a meta-analysis. Thus, we only conducted a systematic review and mainly discussed the methodology and limitation of the included studies. CONCLUSION Although the current evidence prompted that GLXBBX might benefit SAP patients in improvement of angina pectoris, ECG, and blood lipid on a certain extent, this systematic review revealed no definite conclusion about the application of GLXBBX for SAP due to the poor methodological quality, high risk of bias, and inadequate reporting on clinical data. More rigorous, multicenter, sufficient-sample, and double-blind randomized clinical trials are warranted.

Abstract
This meta analysis evaluated the comparative safety and efficacy for the addition of Astragalus-based Chinese medicines combined with chemotherapy and chemotherapy alone for colorectal cancer (CRC) treatment. Systematic literature search was performed by PubMed, EMBSAE, Ovid, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, Chinese Science and Technology Journals (CQVIP), China Academic Journals (CNKI), and Chinese Biomedical Literature database. A total of 22 studies which reported on 1,409 subjects were identified. This meta-analysis indicated that the combination of Astragalus-based Chinese medicines and chemotherapy may increase the efficiency of tumor response rate (TRR) for the treatment of CRC patients (RR: 1.52; 95% CI: 1.24–1.87; p < 0.0001), improve their life quality based on KPS (RR: 2.51; 95% CI: 1.85–3.42; p < 0.00001 and WMD: 10.96; 95% CI: 9.45–12.47; p < 0.00001), and reduce the adverse reactions, including neutropenia (RR: 0.52; 95% CI: 0.44–0.62; p < 0.00001), anemia (RR: 0.49; 95% CI: 0.34–0.70; p < 0.0001), thrombocytopenia (RR: 0.59; 95% CI: 0.46–0.77; p = 0.0001), nausea and vomiting (RR: 0.56; 95% CI: 0.46–0.68; p < 0.00001), diarrhea (RR: 0.55; 95% CI: 0.40–0.75; p = 0.0001), and neurotoxicity (RR: 0.56; 95% CI: 0.49–0.65; p < 0.00001). Hepatic dysfunction (RR: 0.76; 95% CI: 0.53–1.09; p = 0.13) and renal dysfunction (RR: 0.95; 95% CI: 0.51–1.76; p = 0.87) were similar between two groups. The results showed that Astragalus-based Chinese medicines combined with chemotherapy in the treatment of CRC may increase the efficiency of TRR, reduce chemotherapeutic agents-associated adverse reactions, and improve their life quality when compared with chemotherapy alone, but further randomized studies are warranted.

Abstract
Background Modern medicine has suggested exercise therapy is one of the main treatments for postoperative rehabilitation of tumors. It can influence the recovery of cancer patients by changing the body’s material metabolism and energy metabolism. However, studies on metabolic changes of exercise therapy on hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients after surgery are limited. The aim of this study was to explore the effect of aerobic exercise on mice after orthotopic HCC surgery by serum metabolomics test and explore the related mechanism. Material/Methods A total of 60 C57Bl/6 mice were used to establish an orthotopic xenograft model of H22 mouse hepatoma cells. Mice were randomly divided into 6 groups and it was found that the metabolic products of the early postoperative exercise group and sedentary group mainly included L-tryptophan, citric acid, and other energy-related metabolites. Results Energy metabolites, such as succinic acid of the high-intensity exercise group were increased after surgery, whereas phospholipid metabolites, including phosphatidylethanolamine (18: 0/0: 0), were decreased. In the moderate-intensity exercise group, the change tendency was consistent, and the level of various metabolites decreased. Conclusions Thus, it is likely that aerobic exercise reduced the degree of postoperative stress responses and improved energy metabolism in mice. The underlying mechanism involves improving the tricarboxylic acid cycle, intervening in energy metabolism, reorganization caused by the tumor, reducing the abnormal increase of phospholipase activity caused by the stress of liver cancer, reducing the level of hemolytic phospholipids, thereby inhibiting mitochondrial pathway-initiated apoptosis.

Abstract
Background: Ruyiping is an effective traditional Chinese herbal medicine formula for preventing postoperative recurrence and metastasis of breast cancer. However, the exact function and underlying mechanism of Ruyiping in breast cancer remain unclear. Materials and Methods: After breast cancer cell lines MDA-MB-231 and MDA-MB-468 were treated with Ruyiping, the CCK8, colony formation, wound-healing, and transwell invasion assays were used to examine cell proliferation, migration, and invasion, respectively. Flow cytometry was performed to examine the effect of Ruyiping on cell cycle distribution. Western blot was performed to examine the expression of related proteins, and the activity of MMP9 was detected using Gelatin zymography assay. Results: Ruyiping treatment significantly inhibited cell proliferation and viability of MDA-MB-231 and MDA-MB-468 cells. Ruyiping was also revealed to trigger cell cycle arrest at the G2 phase in MDA-MB-231 and MDA-MB-468 cells. Moreover, Ruyiping suppressed the migration and invasion abilities of MDA-MB-231 and MDA-MB-468 cells in vitro. Furthermore, Ruyiping blocked the activity of MMP9 in MDA-MB-231 and MDA-MB-468 cells. Additionally, western blotting showed that Ruyiping attenuated epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT) of breast cancer through downregulation of N-cadherin, Vimentin, Snail1, and Snail2 and upregulation of E-cadherin. The authors observed that the components of Ruyiping Pseudobulbus Cremastra seu pleiones polysaccharide and curcumol showed significant suppression in the growth and invasion of breast cancer cell. Conclusions: The observations of this study suggest the antitumor properties of Ruyiping in cell growth and invasion of breast cancer, which are modulated by induction of cell cycle arrest and reduction of MMP9 and EMT.

Abstract
PURPOSE ApcMin/+ mouse is an excellent animal model bearing multiple intestinal neoplasia, used to simulate human familial adenomatous polyposis and colorectal tumors. The key point of this model is the mutation of Apc gene, which is a significant tumor-suppressor gene in the Wnt signaling pathway. There are also some other possible mechanisms responsible for the development of colorectal tumors in the ApcMin/+ mouse model, such as tumor-associated signaling pathways activation, the changes of tumor-related genes, and the involvement of some related proteins or molecules. METHODS The relevant literatures about ApcMin/+ mouse model from PUBMED databases are reviewed in this study. RESULTS In recent years, increasing studies have focused on the application of ApcMin/+ mouse model in colorectal tumor, trying to find effective therapeutic targets for further use. CONCLUSION This article will give a brief review on the related molecular mechanisms of the ApcMin/+ mouse model and its application in colorectal tumor researches.

Abstract
Background Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) syndromes (ZHENG in Chinese) constitute the basis of understanding the disorders of patients and guiding the use of the Chinese herbs. Colorectal cancer is divided into various subtypes mainly according to the ZHENG identification. Objective We aimed to determine the molecular basis underlying Pi-Xu (spleen deficiency) and Shi-Re (dampness-heat) ZHENG that are commonly found in colorectal cancer patients. Methods About 80 colorectal cancer patients, including 47 Pi-Xu ZHENG and 33 Shi-Re ZHENG were enrolled. Blood and tissue samples of these patients were available for protein and mRNA expression. The protein expression was determined by Immunohistochemistry (IHC) staining and mRNA profiling was detected by expression microarray. Furthermore, mRNA fold change was evaluated by qRT-PCR. Results The colorectal cancer patients with Shi-Re ZHENG had a poor prognosis, compared with Pi-Xu ZHENG (95% CI: 0.05–0.33; p < 0.0001). Moreover, there was a significant difference in protein expression levels (especially for mutant TP53, PCNA, PD-L1 and Ki-67) among Pi-Xu and Shi-Re ZHENG (p < 0.01). Meanwhile, mRNA expression (especially for wild type TP53, KDM6A, PCNA, PD-L1, Ki-67, CCL-2, IL-1a and COX-2) was also remarkably different between Pi-Xu and Shi-Re groups (p < 0.01). Conclusion Our results suggest that Shi-Re ZHENG conditions may contribute to poor overall survival in patients with colorectal cancer. Compared with Pi-Xu ZHENG, high expression of mutant TP53, PCNA, PD-L1, Ki-67, CCL-2, IL-1a and COX-2 may serve as potential biomarkers for diagnosis and prognosis of colorectal cancer patients displayed Shi-Re ZHENG.

Abstract
Ginseng is often prescribed together with cisplatin for treatment of cancer, but the interaction between ginseng and cisplatin is still unknown. This study employed ginsenoside Rb1 (Rb1), one of the major components in ginseng, to explore the effects and involved mechanisms of cisplatin on the pharmacokinetics of ginseng. The effects of cisplatin on the pharmacokinetics of Rb1 and its bioactive metabolites Rd, Rg3, and F2 were investigated by using A549-bearing mice with and without cisplatin intervention. Our data showed that cisplatin could significantly decrease the AUC(0-t) and Cmax of Rd, Rg3, and F2, except Rb1. To evaluate the involved mechanisms, feces and intestinal mucosa were collected to explore the effects of cisplatin on the gut metabolism of Rb1 in vitro; meanwhile, Caco-2 cell model and small intestine histological characters were examined to evaluate the effects of cisplatin on the gut absorptive areas and permeability. The mechanisms involved may be mainly related to the comprehensive contributions of inhibited intestinal bacteria and mucosa metabolisms, narrowed intestinal absorptive area, increased efflux ratio of intestinal absorption and enhanced intestinal permeability. All these findings suggested that the dosage of ginseng traditionally used for health protection should be adjusted when it was prescribed together with cisplatin in the treatment of cancer.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Stable angina pectoris (SAP) is one of the most common symptoms of coronary heart disease. Chinese herbal medicine (CHM) has been used to treat SAP increasingly due to its less side effects. The subject of this study is to explore the effectiveness and safety of Gualou Xiebai Banxia (GLXBBX) decoction as a kind of CHM for SAP. METHODS A systematic literature search for articles up to June 2018 will be performed in following electronic databases: PubMed, Embase, the Cochrane Library, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Chinese Scientific Journals Database, Chinese Biomedical Database, Chinese Biomedical Literature Service System (SinoMed), and Wanfang Database. Inclusion criteria are randomized controlled trials of modified GLXBBX decoction applied on patients with SAP. The primary outcome measures will be coronary heart disease-related clinical evaluation (frequency of acute attack angina, severity of angina pectoris, electrocardiographic changes, and amount of nitroglycerin) and adverse events. RevMan 5.3 software will be used for data synthesis, sensitivity analysis, metaregression, subgroup analysis, and risk of bias assessment. A funnel plot will be developed to evaluate reporting bias and Egger tests will be used to assess funnel plot symmetries. We will use the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation system to assess the quality of evidence. RESULTS This systematic review study will provide an evidence of GLXBBX decoction for SAP. CONCLUSION The study will give an explicit evidence to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of GLXBBX decoction for SAP. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION This systematic review does not require ethics approval and will be submitted to a peer-reviewed journal. PROSPERO REGISTRATION NUMBER CRD 42018094538.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is regarded as an important treatment for gastric cancer patients, especially for those in advanced stage. To evaluate the effects of TCM treatment on gastric cancer patients, the authors performed a retrospective study to report the result of the integrated treatment of TCM with chemotherapy for stage IV non-surgical gastric cancer. METHODS In this study, 182 patients with stage IV and non-surgical gastric cancer were retrospectively analyzed to evaluate the effects of TCM integrated with chemotherapy. Among the 182 cases, 88 cases received integrated therapy consisting of TCM and chemotherapy, while 94 cases received chemotherapy alone. The overall survival and Karnofsky performance status (KPS) score were measured as the main outcome. RESULTS The median overall survival of the integrated therapy group and chemotherapy group were 16.9 and 10.5 months, respectively. The 1-, 3- and 5-year survival rates of integrated therapy group vs. chemotherapy group were 70% vs. 32%, 18% vs. 4%, and 11% vs. 0%, respectively. There was a significant difference between the two groups (χ2 = 42.244, P > 0.001). After six-month treatment, KPS scores of the integrated therapy group and the chemotherapy group were 75.00 ± 14.78 and 60.64 ± 21.39, respectively (P > 0.001). The Cox regression analysis showed that TCM treatment is a protective factor for patients' overall survival. CONCLUSION This study demonstrated that TCM integrated with chemotherapy may prolong overall survival and improve survival rate and life quality of patients with stage IV non-surgical gastric cancer.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) has been widely used by cancer patients and oncologists in the past decades. The present study aimed to examine and compare the characteristics and registration status of published studies in a sample of recently published CAM randomized controlled trial (RCT) reports of oncology in leading journals of 3 categories: general and internal medicine (GIM), clinical oncology (CO), and CAM. METHODS Articles published in the top 5 journals of the 3 categories from 2006 to 2015 were searched in PubMed. Basic characteristics, registration information, impact factor, and citations were identified and extracted from the included RCTs. Data were summarized by frequency, mean, and median and compared using χ2 test and Kruskal-Wallis H test. RESULTS A total of 59 RCTs were included; among them, 34 (58%) could be identified with a registration number. GIM journals (15) enjoyed the highest average number of citations per article, followed by CO (12) and CAM (3) journals ( P < .0001). ClinicalTrials.gov was the most popular registry for these RCTs. Of the RCTs registered in ClinicalTrials.gov , 24% (4/17) of the published studies in CO journals put their results in the registry; however, no study in GIM and CAM journals put the result in the registry ( P = .372). CONCLUSION The top GIM, CO, and CAM journals rarely published CAM RCTs of oncology from 2006 to 2015, and the CAM articles of oncology were less cited. However, there was a clear improvement in the trial registration rate over the past decades.

Abstract
PURPOSE Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) has been widely used by cancer patients but rarely discussed by oncologists. This study was designed to evaluate the communication gap between China's oncologists and cancer patients on CAM. METHODS Two parallel cross-sectional studies assessed 83 oncologists and 402 cancer patients on CAM communication between patients and oncologists, and attitudes toward CAM use and clinical decisions about CAM. RESULTS A majority (75.1%) of the cancer patients (302/402) were identified as CAM users within the most recent three months while 77.6% of the cancer patients (312/402) were identified as CAM users since diagnosis of cancer. Oncologists and patients responded differently ( P < .001) on CAM communications. Both oncologists and patients expected that CAM could improve the immune system. They both agreed that oncologists usually discouraged their patients from using CAM. Regarding the effectiveness of CAM, cancer patients were more likely to believe that CAM was effective while oncologists had more concerns about adverse effects of CAM use. CAM use by patients was predicted by disease duration (≥9 months) in the multivariable logistic regression model. CONCLUSION China's oncologists and cancer patients may hold discrepant views on CAM. China's oncologists are encouraged to improve their knowledge on CAM and to initiate more discussions with their patients regarding effective and the safe use of CAM.

Abstract
Background Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is the most common kidney cancer, accounting for approximately 80–90% of all primary kidney cancer. Treatment for patients with advanced RCC remains unsatisfactory. Rare cancer stem cells (CSCs) are proposed to be responsible for failure of current treatment. Methods OncoLnc was used as a tool for interactively exploring survival correlations. Gene manipulation and expression analysis were carried out using siRNA, RT-PCR and Western blotting. Wound healing and invasion assays were used for phenotypical characterization. Aldefluor assay and FACS sorting Sphere culture were used to determine the “stemness” of CSCs. Co-Immunoprecipitation (Co-IP) was used to examine the interaction between OCT4 and CBFA2T2. Student’s t-test and Chi square test was used to analyze statistical significance. Results CBFA2T2 expression can significantly predict the survival of RCC patients. Knocking-down of CBFA2T2 can inhibit cell migration and invasion in RCC cells in vitro, and reduce ALDHhigh CSCs populations. CBFA2T2 expression is necessary for sphere-forming ability and cancer stem cells marker expression in RCC cell lines. Conclusions Our data suggest that CBFA2T2 expression correlates with aggressive characteristics of RCC and CBFA2T2 is required for maintenance of “stemness” through regulation of stem cells factors, thereby highlighting CBFA2T2 as a potential therapeutic target for RCC treatment. Abstract
Systems biology and bioinformatics provide the feasibility for the basic research associated with “same traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) syndrome in different diseases”. In this study, the plasma proteins in postoperative colorectal (PCC) and postoperative liver cancer (PLC) patients with YDLKS (Yin deficiency of liver-kidney syndrome) were screened out using iTRAQ combined with LC-MS/MS technology. The results demonstrated that, KNG1, AMBP, SERPING1, etc, were all differentially expressed in both PCC and PLC patients with YDLKS, and associated closely with complement and coagulation cascades pathway. C7 and C2 were another two representative factors involving in former pathway. Further validation showed that, the C7 levels were increased significantly in PLC (P < 0.05) and PCC (P < 0.05) with YDLKS group compared to those of NS (no obvious TCM syndromes) group. The AMBP levels were down-regulated significantly in PLC with YDLKS group compared to those of PCC with YDLKS group (P < 0.05). The significant differences of SERPING1 levels (and C2 levels) were shown between YDLKS and NS in PCC (P < 0.01). There were also significant differences of C2 levels between PCC and PLC patients with YDLKS (P < 0.05). Moreover, significant differences of C2 levels were also found between PLC and PCC patients with YDLKS (P < 0.01). ROC curves indicated that, C7 and SERPING1 independently had a potential diagnostic value in distinguishing YDLKS from NS in PLC and PCC, providing the evidences for the material basis of “same TCM syndrome in different diseases” in PCC and PLC patients with YDLKS.

Abstract
It is common for cancer patients to use complementary and alternative medicine (CAM). This study was designed to explore China's oncologists’ knowledge, attitudes and clinical practices regarding CAM use by their patients. An online survey was conducted of China's oncologists. Among 11,270 participants who completed the online survey, 6,007 (53.3%) were identified as oncologists. Most were men (75.2%), with a mean age of 33.4 (standard deviation: 6.5) years. The 6,007 oncologists discussed with 36.5% of their patients about CAM. Most of them (75.6%) did not want to initiate discussions due to lack of knowledge on CAM. Oncologists estimated that 40.0% of their patients used CAM treatments. Oncologists reported that 28.7% of their patients underwent anticancer therapy with the concurrent use of CAM. Four out of five of the responding oncologists self-reported inadequate knowledge and only 22.0% reported receiving professional education on CAM. Nearly half (44.9%) of the oncologists believed CAM treatment was effective for symptoms and treatment of cancer. Physician factors associated with initiating discussions with patients about CAM use included sex, age (≥ 33 years), medical license for traditional Chinese medicine, enough knowledge and professional education experience. China's oncologists infrequently discussed with their patients about CAM due to lack of knowledge. Most of the oncologists did not encourage CAM use.

Abstract
Intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms (IPMNs) are deadly exocrine mucinous tumors. Currently the molecular features and diagnostic markers of IPMNs are not well understood. In this study, we performed microRNA (miRNA) profiling assays to study the potential roles of miRNAs in IPMNs using 78 cases of IPMN patients and controls. When comparing the miRNA expression between IPMN patient samples and controls, we found that miR-210, miR-223, miR-221, miR-155 and miR-187 were differentially expressed in normal pancreas and IPMNs. We further studied the miRNA expression profiles in different pancreatic diseases and identified miRNA features that are associated with Chronic pancreatitis (CP), IPMN, and Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). Therefore, these miRNAs might serve as new risk biomarkers of IPMN and could be useful for future targeted therapies.

Abstract
Background Jolkinolide A (JA) and Jolkinolide B (JB) are diterpenoids extracted from the roots of Euphorbia fischeriana Steud and have been shown to have anti-tumor activity. However, their effects on the ability of tumor cells to invade blood vessels and metastasize remain largely unknown. Investigations into the effects of JA and JB on the angiogenesis of tumor tissues may facilitate the identification of new natural drugs with anti-tumor growth and metastasis activities. Material/Methods We used different concentrations of JA and JB (20 μg/ml, 40 μg/ml, 60 μg/ml, 80 μg/ml, and 100 μg/ml) to stimulate A549 cells and then studied the effects on the growth and metastasis of lung cancers. In addition, we used conditional media from A549 cells (A549-CM) stimulated by either JA or JB in different concentrations to culture human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs). Results We found that both JA and JB significantly inhibited the Akt-STAT3-mTOR signaling pathway and reduced the expression of VEGF in A549 cells, but JB exhibited more significant inhibitory effects than JA. The JB-stimulated A549 cell conditional media had a greater inhibitory effect on the proliferation and migration of HUVECs than did the conditional media of JA-stimulated A549 cells. This effect gradually increased with increasing concentrations of either type of Jolkinolide. Conclusions Our results suggest that JA and JB inhibited VEGF expression in A549 cells through the inhibition of the Akt-STAT3-mTOR signaling pathway, and directly inhibited the proliferation and migration of HUVECs. These findings are of great significance for the development of new plant-derived chemotherapy agents for the treatment of cancer.

Abstract
Background: Many cancer patients seek traditional Chinese medicine
(TCM), the prevalence varying with diagnosis, comorbidities, and demographics.
Interventions sought include acupuncture, massage, herbs, diet, and exercise,
usually combined with conventional therapies. It is not known what proportion of
TCM practitioners care for cancer patients, their cancer specific training or
caseload, what interventions they employ, their outcomes, and their
communication patterns with conventional oncologists. Methods: A
survey was mailed to all 2213 licensed acupuncturists in the 9-county San
Francisco Bay Area gathering descriptive statistics. Results: A
total of 472 (21%) responded by mail or web-based Research Electronic Data
Capture (REDCap) tool. Most respondents (77%) reported caring for patients with
cancer, with 29% reporting having 6 to 10 years of practice experience, and
44.2% having 0 to 20 hours of training specific to the needs of patients with
cancer. Improving quality of life was reported by 94% as what their treatment
offered cancer patients as well as the area where treatment was felt to have the
greatest impact. The most useful TCM modalities were acupuncture (98%), herbs
(79%), diet (72%), moxibustion (46%), and meditation instruction (44%). Absence
of adverse reactions was noted by 95%. Ninety-one percent reported “never” or
“hardly ever” having been contacted by patients’ oncologists to discuss
treatment. Conclusions: Many acupuncturists seeing cancer patients
have significant clinical experience and have sought specialized training.
Improved communication is needed between TCM practitioners and oncologists
sharing care of cancer patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To systematically evaluate the clinical efficacy and safety of Salvianolate injection in the treatment of unstable angina pectoris (UAP). METHODS Using literature databases, we conducted a thorough and systematic retrieval of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that using Salvianolate injection for treating UAP. The Cochrane Risk of Bias Assessment Tool was used to evaluate the methodological quality of the RCTs, and then the data were extracted and meta-analyzed by RevMan5.2 software. RESULTS A total of 22 RCTs with 2050 participants were included. The meta-analysis indicated that the combined use of Salvianolate injection and western medicine (WM) in the treatment of UAP can achieve a superior effect in angina pectoris total effective rate (risk ratio [RR] = 1.22, 95% confidence interval [CI] (1.17, 1.27), Z = 10.15, P < 0.00001], and the total effectiveness rate of electrocardiogram [RR = 1.26, 95% CI (1.19,1.34), Z = 7.77, P < 0.00001]. In addition, Salvianolate injection can improve the nitroglycerin withdrawal rate and the serum level of NO, decrease high-sensitivity C-reactive protein. Adverse drug reactions (ADRs) or adverse drug events (ADEs) were reported in 6 RCTs involving 15 cases; however, there were no serious ADRs/ADEs. CONCLUSION Based on the systematic review, the combined use of Salvianolate injection and WM in the treatment of UAP can achieve a better effect; however, there was no definitive conclusion about its safety. More the large-sample and multicenter RCTs are needed to support its clinical usage.

Efficacy of Compound Kushen Injection in Combination with Induction Chemotherapy for Treating Adult Patients Newly Diagnosed with Acute Leukemia. Abstract
We assessed the clinical effectiveness and safety of CKI (compound Kushen injection) plus standard induction chemotherapy for treating adult acute leukemia (AL). We randomly assigned 332 patients with newly diagnosed AL to control (n = 165, receiving DA (daunorubicin and cytarabine) or hyper-CVAD (fractionated cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, vincristine, and dexamethasone)) or treatment (n = 167, receiving CKI and DA or hyper-CVAD) groups. Posttreatment, treatment group CD3+, CD4+, CD4+/CD8+, natural killer (NK) cell, and immunoglobulin (IgG, IgA, and IgM) levels were significantly higher than those of the control group (p < 0.05), and CD8+ levels were lower in the treatment group than in the control group (p < 0.05). Treatment group interleukin- (IL-) 4 and IL-10 levels were significantly higher compared to the control posttreatment (both p < 0.05) as were complete remission, overall response, and quality of life (QoL) improvement rates (p < 0.05). The control group had more incidences of grade 3/4 hematologic and nonhematologic toxicity (p < 0.05). Responses to induction chemotherapy, QoL improvement, and adverse events incidence between control group patients with acute myeloid leukemia and acute lymphocytic leukemia were not significantly different. CKI plus standard induction chemotherapy is effective and safe for treating AL, possibly by increasing immunologic function.
