Abstract
Case study methodology is useful for generating a holistic understanding of a complex and context-bound case or phenomenon. This editorial is the first in a series titled "Focus on Qualitative Data Analysis." It aims to help researchers choose appropriate methods for conducting rigorous qualitative analyses across varied approaches. Future articles will address qualitative description, phenomenology, grounded theory, and narrative inquiry.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Earthquakes cause significant psychological and physical trauma in children, especially when leading to amputations, as they disrupt physical, emotional, and social well-being. AIM This study was conducted phenomenologically to explore the experiences of children amputated in the Kahramanmaraş earthquake and their parents/caregivers. METHOD This study was conducted as a phenomenological study with children who were amputated in the Kahramanmaraş earthquake and their parents/caregivers between August and October 2023. The sample of the study consisted of seven children and their parents/caregivers who met the inclusion criteria and volunteered to participate in the study through purposive sampling method. Data were collected through in-depth interviews using an introductory information form and a semistructured interview form developed by the researcher. RESULTS It was found that 57.2% of the children who participated in our study were male and their mean age was 11.25 ± 4.02 years. It was found that all the children's houses were destroyed in the earthquake, they were trapped under the debris, and they experienced losses in their family members and relatives. As a result of data analysis, nine themes were identified as apocalypse, pain, fear, and hopelessness for children and apocalypse, helplessness, pain, anger, and hopelessness for parents/caregivers. CONCLUSIONS This study found that earthquake-affected amputee children perceived the earthquake as an apocalypse, experienced prolonged pain during hospitalization, continued to fear the earthquake, and felt hopeless about the future. The children's parents/caregivers also reported that they perceived the earthquake as an apocalypse, that they felt helpless and hopeless for themselves and the children, and that the children had angry/irritable behavior with pain after the disaster.

Abstract
Background: There is currently no standardised guidance that supports any particular method of debridement. Maggot debridement therapy (MDT) is often used as a last-resort therapy over more conventional treatments, despite mounting evidence of its benefits. Objectives: This review aimed to critically analyse the systemic and individual barriers to MDT implementation and utilisation. As the primary providers of wound care, discussions are primarily focused on nursing care. Search strategy: The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) was used to conduct a literature search of the studies published between 2012 and 2022 across four databases: CINAHL, Cochrane, British Nursing Index and PubMed. The keywords used for this search were based on the PICO (Population, Intervention, Comparison, Outcome) framework. Twenty-three main articles met the inclusion criteria. All the studies were quality appraised using a risk of bias tool and data were extracted using a predesigned form. The evidence base of the four main themes were discussed: (1) effectiveness of MDT compared to conventional treatments, (2) perceptions and stigma, (3) cost, training and accessibility and (4) side-effects. Conclusions: The findings of this review suggest that MDT is an underused and potentially very effective method of debridement compared to conventional treatments. The identified barriers could be mitigated with relatively low-cost solutions. More high-quality research is needed across all the barriers.

Abstract
ABSTRACT This article highlights the essential role of reflexivity in research, using a qualitative project involving interviews with nurse practitioners during the COVID-19 pandemic as an example. It discusses the potential biases inherent in research, particularly when the researcher's experiences closely align with those of the participants. Drawing on the perspective of a nurse practitioner engaged in both research and health care provision, this article explores the importance of reflexivity in addressing these biases. Examining the lead author's experiences conducting interviews with fellow nurse practitioners, the article illustrates how reflexivity was used, particularly in data collection and analysis, to enhance transparency and minimize subjectivity. By advocating for the integration of reflexivity in qualitative research, this article emphasizes the significance of shared experiences between nurse practitioner researchers and participants in reducing biases and improving research outcomes. It demonstrates how reflexivity contributes to a more authentic and comprehensive methodology, especially when researchers share similar experiences with participants. Furthermore, this article offers practical suggestions to assist nurse practitioners in enhancing reflexivity throughout the research process, thereby contributing to ongoing discussion and strategy development in the field.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Grounded theory (GT) has become one of the foremost tools in qualitative nursing research. There are different approaches to GT but a feature common to all of them is theoretical sensitivity, which facilitates GT's iterative process. However, differences between the approaches in how to apply theoretical sensitivity and how much influence existing knowledge should play have contributed to tribalism. AIM To critically evaluate the role of theoretical sensitivity and reflexivity in GT and the involvement they can have, as well as explore what steps researchers can take to improve their insight. DISCUSSION Theoretical sensitivity enables researchers to steer their studies to answer their research questions, gain insight into their study's findings and develop theory grounded in the data. However, reflection is required for researchers to understand their effect on the theories that emerge, prevent them from applying preconceived ideas and allow for the unfettered emergence of theory. CONCLUSION Researchers who do not demonstrate insight into their own philosophical positions and influences risk being accused of bias; this may result in the perceived value of their theoretical outcomes being reduced. Applying a reflexive process may mitigate this, enabling them to understand and refine their methodological processes and produce high-quality GT research. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE All researchers should consider using reflexivity when conducting research. Understanding influences and positionality in qualitative methodologies allows for transparency and improves the rigour of their outcomes.

Abstract
Marital concerns can trigger emotional stress, especially among long-term hospitalised individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia, significantly affecting their treatment and recovery. Unfortunately, rehabilitation programs tend to overlook the marital needs of individuals with diagnosed schizophrenia. This research aimed to investigate the content related to marital concerns of Chinese individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia who were undergoing extended hospitalisation. Fifteen participants diagnosed with schizophrenia were recruited through purposive sampling for face-to-face semi-structured interviews. The gathered data were analysed using Colaizzi's method, revealing three themes: (1) manifestations of marriage-related concerns, (2) effects of marriage on disease progression, and (3) the need for support from family and the hospital. This study offers new insights into marital concerns among long-term schizophrenia inpatients and underscores the significance of screening and intervention for such concerns. Healthcare professionals and family members should extend support to patients to foster confidence within their marital relationships.

Abstract
Introduction The family, at community, must be an important part of elderly care. However, most of the elderly experience a decrease in psychological well-being and quality of life. This is not in accordance with the concept of the family-centered care (FCC) model and can endanger the continuity of the elderly with chronic illnesses. Objective The aim of this study was to explore experience of FCC among patients with chronic illness, nurses, families, and volunteers. Methods This study examines the contextual-based FCC model qualitatively. In-depth interviews and focus group discussions were conducted by 12 elderly people, 3 nurses, 10 family members, and 3 volunteers. In total, 36 people, where several were FGD participants, were also interviewed in depth. Data were analyzed using thematic analysis, with codes organized into larger themes. Result In total, 36 interviews and FGDs were conducted. The concept of information interaction, the phenomenon of emotional interaction, the practical interaction, and various factors that can either facilitate or impede interaction, were considered the four significant themes. Conclusion FCC acceptance is found in interactions between parents, nurses, family, and volunteers who are not optimistic. Lack of communication and collaboration was noted between community nurses and volunteers. Offer a new perspective on developing and implementing interventions that facilitate positive interactions, reduce family burdens, provide high-quality treatment for parents with chronic diseases, and improve the quality of care for those with advanced chronic conditions. Recommendation These insights provide a fresh perspective on how to develop and implement effective interventions in this context. It is recommended that future research should employ multiple methodologies to investigate FCC across diverse health practices for the elderly population.

Abstract
Technology is transforming service delivery and practice in many regulated professions, altering required skills, scopes of practice, and the organization of professional work. Professional regulators face considerable pressure to facilitate technology-enabled work while adapting to digital changes in their practices and procedures. However, our understanding of how regulators are responding to technology-driven risks and the impact of technology on regulatory policy is limited. To examine the impact of technology and digitalization on regulation, we conducted an exploratory case study of the regulatory bodies for nursing, law, and social work in Ontario, Canada. Data were collected over two phases. First, we collected documents from the regulators' websites and regulatory consortiums. Second, we conducted key informant interviews with two representatives from each regulator. Data were thematically analyzed to explore the impact of technological change on regulatory activities and policies and to compare how regulatory structure and field shape this impact. Five themes were identified in our analysis: balancing efficiency potential with risks of certain technological advances; the potential for improving regulation through data analytics; considering how to regulate a technologically competent workforce; recalibrating pandemic emergency measures involving technology; and contemplating the future of technology on regulatory policy and practice. Regulators face ongoing challenges with providing equity-based approaches to regulating virtual practice, ensuring practitioners are technologically competent, and leveraging regulatory data to inform decision-making. Policymakers and regulators across Canada and internationally should prioritize risk-balanced policies, guidelines, and practice standards to support professional practice in the digital era.

Abstract
PURPOSE Mucopolysaccharidosis increases morbidity and mortality by causing physical and mental limitations in children. Parents experience various difficulties, mostly due to delayed diagnosis and difficult treatment processes. This study aims to examine the experiences of parents regarding their child's illness process. DESIGN AND METHODS In this qualitative study, semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted with parents (n = 10) who had a child who had suffered from MPS for at least six months. Interviews were conducted and recorded after the parents were contacted through the MPS-LH association and informed consent was obtained. The conducting and reporting of the research were carried out according to the "Consolidated criteria for reporting qualitative research (COREQ)" checklist. RESULTS The mean age of the parents was 41.3 ± 7.83. The diagnosis for most of the children was MPS type 4 A (n = 4) and the mean age of the children was 11.3 ± 6.0. Three main themes were identified: 1) psychosocial effects; 2) difficulties and needs; and 3) coping resources. CONCLUSIONS It was determined that the parents were affected socially and emotionally due to the child's diagnosis and the subsequent process. IMPLICATIONS TO PRACTICE It will be possible to provide the necessary support to parents with comprehensive nursing care that is planned according to the differing needs of children with MPS.

Abstract
ABSTRACT Care provided by Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)-prepared Registered Nurses (RNs) has been shown to lead to more positive patient outcomes compared to care provided by non-BSN-prepared RNs. A Fall 2021 study explored barriers of requiring a BSN degree of staff nurses from the perspective of hospital and long-term care facility nurse leaders in Tennessee (N = 89), strategies to increase the number of nurses with BSNs, and association between leadership goals and the number of BSN-prepared nurses in the facilities. Seven barriers to requiring the BSN and nine strategies to increase BSNs were identified. Significant association was found between having plans to increase the number of BSN nurses and the percentage of nurses in the facility with BSN degrees.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Students' academic motivation is crucial to their academic performance, success, and future career performance. Understanding the experiences of students regarding academic motivation can help address this issue. This qualitative study aimed to explore the experiences of dentistry students of Tabriz University of Medical Sciences regarding academic motivation. METHODS This qualitative content analysis study collected data through semi-structured individual interviews with open-ended questions. The collected data were then organized into codes, subcategories, categories, and themes. Extensive interviews, meetings, and active engagement with the participants were conducted to ensure the strength of the data collected. RESULTS The results of this study yielded 20 subclasses and 11 classes. These codes, categories, and sub-categories were summarized into seven themes: self-efficacy, outcome expectations, outcome expectancies, emotional coping, self-regulation, situational perception, and environment. CONCLUSION This study showed that various concepts, from personal processes to environmental and social processes, play a role in students' academic motivation. This study's findings can contribute to developing more effective interventions to improve the motivation level of dentistry students.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Mental health service utilization remains a challenge in developing countries, with numerous barriers affecting access to care. Albeit data suggest poor utilization of mental health services in the Bolgatanga Municipality in Ghana, no studies have explored the barriers to the utilization of mental health services. Therefore, this study explored the perspectives of family caregivers, service providers, and mental health service administrators on the barriers to mental health service utilization in the Bolgatanga Municipality, Ghana. METHODS A qualitative descriptive design was employed for the study. Nineteen participants were purposively sampled from two hospitals including fifteen family caregivers, two service providers, and two mental health administrators. Data were collected through individual in-depth interviews using a semi-structured interview guide. Audio-recorded interviews were transcribed verbatim and thematically analyzed using NVivo 12 pro software. RESULTS Five main themes emerged including individual-level barriers, interpersonal barriers, community-level barriers, organizational-level barriers, and policy-level barriers. At the individual level, lack of insight, poor treatment compliance, and financial challenges were prominent barriers. Interpersonal barriers included family pressure influenced by cultural and spiritual beliefs. At the community level, stigma and mental health illiteracy were identified as significant barriers. At the organizational level, barriers encompassed inadequate staffing, limited space, and staff attitudes. Policy-level barriers included the neglect of mental health in policies and the non-inclusion of mental health services in the National Health Insurance Scheme. CONCLUSION This study highlights the complexity of barriers to mental health service utilization and underscores the need for a comprehensive approach to address them. Collaborative efforts involving healthcare providers, policymakers, communities, and families are essential to mitigate these barriers. It is imperative to consider these barriers when developing strategies to improve the utilization of mental health services in Ghana.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to explore the school re-entry experiences of Turkish survivors of childhood and adolescent cancer. DATA SOURCES In this qualitative study, semistructured in-depth interviews were undertaken with parents of childhood cancer survivors who had completed treatment for at least 2 years (n = 20). Interviews were conducted via telephone or video conferencing. The study was conducted and reported according to the COREQ (Consolidated Criteria for Reporting Qualitative Research) guidelines. The components of qualitative rigor were considered to ensure confidence in the methods and data. CONCLUSIONS The average age of parents was 43.20 ± 4.66 years (range 37-55) (n = 20). The mean age of survivors was 8.45 ± 2.03 years at diagnosis and 15.05 ± 2.08 years during the study. The diagnosis of most of the survivors was lymphoma (35%). Four main themes were developed: worry; challenging situations; negative effects of the disease process; and facilitating situations. Parents stated that both children and parents need support during the school re-entry process. IMPLICATION FOR NURSING PRACTICE This study revealed that survivors may experience problems that make school re-entry difficult. With cooperation between the health team and the school, arrangements should be made to ensure survivors have a positive experience on school re-entry. Pediatric oncology nurses should know survivors' requirements and take action to deliver school re-entry adjustment programs.

Abstract
Objective During the period of COVID-19, government regulation (GR) played an important role in healthcare. This study examines the current research situation of GR in healthcare, discusses the research hotspots, the most productive authors and countries, and the most common journals, and analyzes the changes in GR in healthcare before and after the outbreak of COVID-19. Methods This study followed PRISMA guidelines to collect literature on GR in healthcare. And the VOSviewer software was used to perform a quantitative analysis of these documents to obtain a visual map, including year, country, institution, journal, author, and research topic. Results A total of 1,830 papers that involved 976 academic journals, 3,178 institutions, and 133 countries were identified from 1985 to 2023. The United States was the country with the highest production (n = 613), followed by the United Kingdom (n = 289). The institution with the largest number of publications was the University of London in the UK (n = 103); In the author collaboration network, the biggest cluster is Bomhoff M, Bouwman R, Friele R, et al. The top five journals in terms of the number of articles were BMC Health Services Research (n = 70), Plos One (n = 35), Health Policy (n = 33), Social Science & Medicine (n = 29), Health Policy and Planning (n = 29), and Frontiers in Public Health (n = 27). The existing literature mainly focused on "health policy," "public health," "China," "mental health," "India," "qualitative research," "legislation," and "governance," et al. Since 2020, research on "COVID-19" has also become a priority in the domain of healthcare. Conclusion This study reveals the overall performance of the literature on GR published in healthcare. Healthcare needs GR, especially in response to the COVID-19 epidemic, which has played an irreplaceable role. The outbreak of COVID-19 not only tested the health systems of various countries, but also changed GR in healthcare. With the end of COVID-19, whether these changes will end remains to be further studied.

Abstract
The COVID-19 pandemic and its related stresses such as short-staffing, heavy workloads, and burnout are prompting nurses to re-consider institutional employment, bringing a renewed interest in self-employed nursing and its regulation. There is limited research on the regulation of self-employed nursing roles, and published work focuses on nurses' experiences rather than on regulatory practices themselves. This qualitative case study research aimed to examine the regulation of self-employed nurses by comparing the regulatory policies and processes of nursing regulatory bodies in Ontario, Alberta, and Saskatchewan. The findings demonstrated wide variation in the regulation of self-employed nurses across these jurisdictions. The article includes recommendations to clarify and harmonize the processes used to regulate self-employed nurses.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has incurred a health challenge. Patients suffer from many physical and mental disorders. To accurately identify the experience of patients with Covid-19 in the Iranian society. MATERIALS AND METHODS This qualitative research was conducted using the grounded theory. The data of this grounded theory study were collected using 32 semi-structured interviews with participants and field notes including the patients with Covid-19, nurses, physicians, and the patients' families. Data analysis was performed using Corbin and Strauss (2008) approach for concepts, context, process, and categories' integration. RESULTS Qualitative analysis of data led to the extraction of 54 sub-categories and 7 final categories. "Isolation, fear of death, and fear of infection of relatives and family members" were identified as the main issue. The context to this concern was the "unfamiliarity with the virus due to its ambiguous nature that was obtained with a wide range of symptoms." Facing this issue, the patients used the strategy of "adherence to health protocol in the coronavirus infection process" that was recognized as the central variable. CONCLUSION The ambiguous and complex nature of the emerging virus, the appearance of different symptoms in different people, and the fear of infecting others, death and anxiety due to unknown complications of the disease make patients go through the most difficult experience of their lives. That requires ongoing training on up-to-date prevention and treatment protocols, along with the emergence of mutated viruses and new symptoms.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Timely and systematic professional treatment is crucial in schizophrenia prognosis, but the global rate of mental health service, now, use or help-seeking behavior is low. METHODS In-depth semi-structured interviews were conducted with 13 participants with the diagnosis of schizophrenia between October to December 2021. The participants were purposively sampled from a psychiatric hospital's. Interviews were recorded and transcribed verbatim into NVivo 12.0. RESULTS The findings were summarized under 3 themes and 12 subthemes: (1) capability (lack of knowledge due to insufficient mental health literacy or lack of insight, inability to access disease information due to a lack of mental health literacy, and symptoms-related barriers); (2) opportunity (lack of disease information sources, inability to balance work and study during prolonged hospitalization, accessibility and convenience of medical resources, and the acquisition and utilization of social support); and (3) motivation (awareness of the disease and professional treatment, negative experiences of disease episodes, past medical experience, confidence in tcuring the disease, and the fulfillment of daily life and self-worth). CONCLUSION The medical help-seeking behavior of people with the diagnosis of schizophrenia is the result of the interaction of many barriers and facilitators, and challenges persist today. Interventions can be implemented with the BCW framework and our results to precisely eliminate delays in the diagnosis and treatment of mental problems.

Abstract
AIM The purpose of this study was to investigate the cultural and linguistic appropriateness of the content, images and layout of the web-based breastfeeding educational resource for Saudi women using a consensus development approach. BACKGROUND Although the World Health Organization highly recommends exclusive breastfeeding, there is a decline in breastfeeding rates in Saudi Arabia, especially during hospital stay. The combining of health professional support with e-technology tools has been proposed as a method to increase exclusive breastfeeding. However, the cultural and linguistic appropriateness of an e-technology-based approach has not been explored in Saudi women. METHODS After developing a content draft of the web-based breastfeeding educational resource specific to Saudi culture, an online consensus development conference was organised with ten participants including two university researchers and eight health care providers to investigate the cultural and linguistic appropriateness of the educational content. The participants from Saudi Arabia were Saudi mothers who had breastfeeding experiences and were key maternity health professionals employed at the Maternity and Children Hospital of Dammam, Saudi Arabia. The SQUIRE checklist was used in the reporting of this study. RESULTS Feedback received prior to the meeting showed that 81% of the content was acceptable and minor changes were required. Changes were made to the content based on the suggestions and feedback received. The consensus group accepted all the changes and the content was finalised. CONCLUSIONS The online consensus development conference was found to be a very convenient way to decide on the cultural and linguistic appropriateness of the content of the web-based breastfeeding educational resource allowing the participation of experts from different countries; this was considered a critical step in ensuring the successful implementation of the intervention.

Abstract
Background Everyone becomes aware due to the epidemic, especially primary department nurses. The significance of their experiences teaches nurses how to take care of themselves and be successful in their caregiving. Objective The purpose of this study was to investigate the perceptions of nurses working in primary care settings in rural regions during the omicron variant pandemic. Methods On the basis of the Nvivo 12 analytic approach, extensive semi-structured interviews were used to perform this qualitative study. 20 interviews later, data saturation had been reached. Data collecting was place from February to March 2022 for a month. The following participant characteristics were discovered through semi-structured interviews with 20 nurse participants. Ages of the participants, who were split between eight men and twelve women, varied from 28 to 43 years (average age 36.4 years). The majority (75% of them) had a vocational education, and their years of experience ranged from five to fifteen (average 11 years). Results 4 topics and 7 sub-themes' results. The results' fundamental message is: The Nursing Clinical Practice Dilemma, school district, virus type uncertainty Indigenous peoples do not adhere to the concept of the afterlife. Must Be Excited and Alert; School Cluster; Virus Type Confusion; Non-Belief in Covid; and the Dilemma of Nursing in Clinical Practice are the Overarching Themes of This Study. Conclusion Making innovations to increase motivation thereby reducing mental and physical fatigue are the implications of the results of this study. Further exploration of the readiness of nurses to treat patients in the main department is believed to be beneficial for the results of this study.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Expected rise in the demand for healthcare and a dropping supply of healthcare professionals, has generated an increased interest in the most effective deployment of healthcare professionals. Consequently, task shifting has become a common strategy to redistribute tasks between established professional groups, however, little is known about the effects of shifting tasks to emerging professional groups. The aim of this study was to evaluate a legal amendment to facilitate task shifting to an emerging profession in Dutch healthcare: Clinical Technologists (CTs). CTs were introduced and provided an Extended Scope of Practice (ESP) to perform nine 'reserved procedures' independently. METHODS A concurrent multi-phase mixed methods study was used to evaluate whether a legal amendment to facilitate task shifting to CTs was effective and efficient. RESULTS The results show that CTs use their ESP frequently to perform five categories of reserved procedures independently and suggest that the ESP increased the efficiency of care delivery for those procedures. Additionally, the findings highlight that task shifting was influenced by the setting in which CTs worked, time allotted to patient-contact as well as external factors (e.g., financing). CONCLUSIONS This study provides tentative lessons for policymakers on how task shifting to emerging professional groups can be improved. Providing a legal amendment to facilitate task shifting to CTs seems to be effective and efficient. However, it also poses multiple challenges. While established professional groups can face similar challenges, it is likely that these are exacerbated for emerging professional groups, particularly when shifting tasks occurs horizontally.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Nursing education in Iran is one of the disciplines of medical sciences and it needs a design tailored to the community needs in terms of theoretical and clinical approaches. This system is currently faced with various challenges. This study aims to explore the challenges of Iranian nursing education system to address community needs. METHODS A study was carried out through an exploratory descriptive qualitative design with content analysis method. In-depth semi-structured interviews were conducted with 21 participants from the nursing society, selected through purposive sampling. The interviews were continued until data saturation. Data analysis was performed simultaneous with data collection by using Graneheim & Lundman approach. RESULTS Based on the interviews and simultaneous analyses, a total of 471 codes, 14 subcategories, six main categories, and two themes were extracted. The first theme, "system structure," consisted of three categories: "the need for ongoing revision of curriculum," "the need to recruit qualified students," and "the need for a proportionate educational environment." The second theme was "the education process" with three categories "the need for purposive educational design," "the need for purposive monitoring and feedback," and "the need for appropriate and early interaction with the community." The participants emphasized the continuous revision of the educational curriculum based on the current needs of the community and community-based nursing education. CONCLUSIONS In general, the results showed that Iranian nursing education system is faced with many challenges in the educational system structure and processes. It is necessary to make appropriate plans to enhance the status of the educational system structure and develop educational designs to address community needs using a hospital/community-based approach.

Abstract
Introduction Since novice nurses need support at the beginning of their work, knowing workplace support resources can help them to experience fewer challenges at the beginning of their work and improve the quality of patient care. Objectives The present qualitative study aimed to explore novice nurses' experiences of supporting the workplace at the beginning of their work. Design This qualitative study was performed using a content analysis method. Methods This qualitative study was conducted with 14 novice nurse participants using the conventional content analysis method, unstructured in-depth interviews were used to collect data. All data were recorded, transcribed, and analyzed based on the Graneheim and Lundman method. Results Two major categories and four subcategories were extracted during data analysis as follows: (1) An intimate work environment with subcategories of cooperative work atmosphere and empathetic behaviors, (2) Educational support available for improvement contains subcategories conducting orientation courses and holding retraining courses. Conclusion The present study showed that such experiences as an intimate work environment, and educational support help novice nurses to have a supportive workplace and improve their performance. A welcoming and supportive atmosphere should be created for newcomers to ease their anxiety and frustration. Furthermore, they can improve their performance and provide quality care by giving themselves the motivation and spirit of improvement. Relevance to Clinical Practice This research highlights the need for new nurses to have support resources in the work environment, and healthcare managers can improve the quality of care by allocating sufficient support resources to this group of nurses.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Recent pandemics have provided important lessons to inform planning for public health emergencies. Despite these lessons, gaps in implementation during the COVID-19 pandemic are evident. Additionally, research to inform interventions to support the needs of front-line nurses during a prolonged pandemic are lacking. We aimed to gain an understanding of critical care nurses' perspectives of the ongoing pandemic, including their opinions of their organization and governments response to the pandemic, to inform interventions to improve the response to the current and future pandemics. METHODS This sub-study is part of a cross-sectional online survey distributed to Canadian critical care nurses at two time points during the pandemic (March-May 2020; April-May 2021). We employed a qualitative descriptive design comprised of three open-ended questions to provide an opportunity for participants to share perspectives not specifically addressed in the main survey. Responses were analyzed using conventional content analysis. RESULTS One hundred nine of the 168 (64.9%) participants in the second survey responded to the open-ended questions. While perspectives about effectiveness of both their organization's and the government's responses to the pandemic were mixed, most noted that inconsistent and unclear communication made it difficult to trust the information provided. Several participants who had worked during previous pandemics noted that their organization's COVID-19 response failed to incorporate lessons from these past experiences. Many respondents reported high levels of burnout and moral distress that negatively affected both their professional and personal lives. Despite these experiences, several respondents noted that support from co-workers had helped them to cope with the stress and challenges. CONCLUSION One year into the pandemic, critical care nurses' lived experiences continue to reflect previously identified challenges and opportunities for improvement in pandemic preparedness and response. These findings suggest that lessons from the current and prior pandemics have been inadequately considered in the COVID-19 response. Incorporation of these perspectives into interventions to improve the health system response, and support the needs of critical care nurses is essential to fostering a resilient health workforce. Research to understand the experience of other front-line workers and to learn from more and less successful interventions, and leaders, is needed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Continuing medical education is essential for nurses to provide quality patient care and upgrade their professional skills and competence. The need for continuing medical education (CME) has become more apparent in the face of advances in medical science, the ever-changing healthcare system, and nurses' vital role in improving health care. It is, therefore, imperative to explore the nurses' experience of CME courses and the extent to which such programs are effective. OBJECTIVE The present qualitative study aimed to explore and describe nurses' experiences of the effect of CE programs in promoting their competencies toward non-communicable diseases. METHODS This qualitative content analysis study was conducted from December 2019 to April 2020 at various hospitals affiliated to Shiraz University of Medical Sciences (Shiraz, Iran) and based on the principles of conventional content analysis. The target population was nurses who actively worked in the chronic wards of these hospitals. The participants were selected using maximum variation sampling, including nine nursing managers, education and clinical supervisors, and staff nurses. Data were collected through individual, face-to-face, semi-structured interviews guided by an interview guide, and data collection continued until data saturation was achieved. Each interview took about 30-45 min. Follow up questions were used for clarification when needed. Data trustworthiness was assessed according to the criteria proposed by Guba and Lincoln. RESULTS Analysis of the interview data resulted in 230 primary codes, based on 8 categories, and three themes were identified. The extracted themes were gaps in the planning of the CME program, problematic context, and training to improve professional skills and competency. The associated categories were gaps in the planning of the CME program, problematic context, and training to improve professional skills and competency. CONCLUSION Professional competence and performance of nurses can be improved through intrinsic motivation stimulation, planning, and implementation of training programs based on professional needs and effective assessment of the teaching/learning process.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study aimed to explore the experience and views of mothers with children who have been diagnosed with retinoblastoma. DESIGN AND METHODS A descriptive qualitative study was conducted in the period of 2019-2021. Interviews were conducted with 21 mothers of children diagnosed with retinoblastoma in Indonesia. Data were collected by semi-structured interviews and examined by content analysis. RESULTS Mothers evolved from a sense of unacceptability to accepting challenges and gaining inner strength. Three themes were identified: 1) physical and psychological suffering, 2) awareness of changes and demands, and 3) keep moving forward. Mothers developed positive adaptive mechanisms for coping with the problems associated with having a child with retinoblastoma. Psychological adjustment and religious beliefs were key elements in their journeys toward embracing life in the moment. CONCLUSION Findings illuminated psychological adaptation and coping strategies of mothers with seriously ill children and highlighted how difficulties and cultural norms shaped the adaptative process. Religion and health beliefs played varied and important roles in helping mothers to manage their stress and enhance their coping strategies. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS Our findings revealed that it is important to routinely assess social support, traditional health beliefs, and spirituality on mothers, facilitate mentoring to help mothers find their inner strengths, and develop intervention programs designed to promote psychological adjustment without delaying treatment.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to explore adolescent survivors' views and expectations about long-term follow-up care. METHODS Semi-structured, in-depth interviews were conducted with 16 adolescent survivors of childhood acute lymphoblastic leukaemia. Survivors who had completed treatment at least 2 years ago were involved in the study. Interviews were audio-recorded and transcribed verbatim. An inductive thematic approach was used to analyse the data. RESULTS Four main themes and sub-themes were identified from the analysis as follows: information needs with three sub-themes 'long-term follow-up, healthy life and social life', support needs with three sub-themes 'psychosocial (peer relations etc.), school related and social-emotional (fear of relapse, body image, self-esteem, etc.)', perceived benefits with two sub-themes 'social-emotional and related to long-term follow-up' and perceived barriers 'medical-hospital related and social life'. CONCLUSIONS Adolescent survivors mainly need support in terms of psychosocial aspects: self-esteem-body image, school, peer relations and social activities during follow-up. Identified barriers related to follow-up were school absence and not able to participate social activities. Adolescents specify health promotion approaches as benefits aspects of follow-up. The findings of this study will guide nurses in the long-term follow-up care of adolescent survivors of acute lymphoblastic leukaemia and provide an opportunity to plan individualised follow-up care.

Aiming to characterize the types of clinical judgment and decision-making adopted by nursing students in clinical education, we designed a qualitative, exploratory and descriptive study, with data collection obtained through documental analysis of nursing student’s reflective journals, in clinical education settings. Data analysis was performed according to Bardin using the webQDA software. Thirty-four students participated in the study, while attending the Clinical Learning Curricular Unit: Caring for Clients with Increased Vulnerability and Families in Transition, producing a total of 40 reflective journals. Of the 248 identified registration units, we highlight the evaluation decision-making with 45 registration units and the intervention decision-making, with 55 registration units. It is concluded that student´s reflections in the context of clinical teaching, are mainly about the assessment of the care situation and the decision-making related to the action. This study is intended to guide the learning of these competencies in nursing education.

Abstract
Purpose: The pandemic makes everyone alert, including nurses who are in emergency rooms at community health centers, the importance of their experiences is a lesson for nurses to maintain themselves and be effectivein providing services. This study aimed to explore the experience of nurses who are in emergency rooms at rural area during the coronavirus disease pandemic. Methods: This qualitative research was conducted based on the Nvivo 12 analysis method using in-depth semistructured interviews. Data saturation was reached after 20 interviews were completed. Data collection lasted for 1 month from February to March 2020. Results: Semistructured interviews with 20 nurse participants obtained the following participant characteristics. Eight participants were males and 12 were females with an age ranged from 28 to 43 years (average age 36.4 years). The majority had vocational education (75%), with long experience that ranged from 5 to 15 years (average 11 years). The findings of four themes and seven subthemes. The theme of the findings is Expressions of care, Compliance increases using Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), Focus to refer to, Triage at the forefront. Conclusion: This research reveals that Expressions of care, Compliance increases using PPE, Focus to refer to, Triage at the forefront is the main theme identified in this study. Further investigation of the readiness of nurses in handling patients in the emergency room is considered to be of benefit to the results of this study.

Abstract
PURPOSE Gender affirmation lessens mental health disparities among transgender and gender nonbinary (TGNB) persons. However, the concept of what it means to be affirmed in one's gender has not been fully explored, nor has the impact of gender affirmation on other health indicators been determined. The purpose of this study was to explore the meaning of gender affirmation among a sample of TGNB persons. METHODS This qualitative, narrative inquiry study consisted of individual, in-depth, semi-structured interviews with a convenience sample of 20 TGNB persons. Descriptive content analysis was conducted to discover themes. RESULTS This study identified salient themes regarding the multiple levels of affirmation (including internal, external and societal) needed to achieve the overall goal of living an optimal life described as "being seen, heard and even celebrated" as TGNB. CONCLUSION Results of this study have clinical, educational, research, and policy implications. Future research should explore the impact of gender affirmation on important health indicators in the TGNB community, differences in the experiences and needs among subgroups of TGNB persons, and the potential impact of nurses on the health experience of TGNB persons across the spectrum of transition.

Abstract
As the COVID-19 pandemic diminishes, it is expected that patients will seek more outpatient appointments resulting in adverse patient and clinic experiences if there is a corresponding increase in missed appointments. This study's purpose was to determine if there was an association between advanced access scheduling, also known as open access or same day scheduling, and missed appointment rates for patients scheduled with preferred primary care physicians vis-a-vis nonpreferred primary care physicians. Patients prescheduled with primary care providers and over the age of 18 years were included in the study, which totaled 4815 visits. Study results demonstrated a statistically significant mean proportion difference between the national no-show rate and the study's no-show rate as well as a significant association between physician type and visit status. The results suggested the potential for improving the patient experience with advanced access scheduling if patients are scheduled with their preferred primary care physician. This study may promote positive patient experiences by providing patients and clinicians with an understanding of the significance surrounding advanced access scheduling thus decreasing missed appointments.

Abstract
Academic educators in universities are well positioned to detect early signs and symptoms of unexplained behaviour change in students that could be the beginning of mental health issues. The purpose of this research was to explore the attitudes, beliefs, knowledge and practices of university academics in Japan towards health science students with psychological/mental health issues. This study used a qualitative descriptive design. Three focus groups using a semi-structured interview guide were conducted with 15 academics teaching health science students. Data were collected between March to October 2019. Themes revealed three areas of interest: 1) Reflection on mental health issues in Japan with sub-themes "family issues"; "society expectations and changes", and "stigma"; 2) Reflection on students' mental health issues with sub-themes "student behaviors", "staff involvement", "barriers encountered"; and, 3) Potential supports with sub-themes "university assistance", "communication and connection", and "interventions and prevention." The findings provide insight and can benefit student populations across diverse cultural university settings. Further research to investigate academic staff support with early recognition of mental ill-health and ability to provide information and advice to students is warranted. Recommendations include mental health education for academics and for students to encourage healthy university campuses and well-being within the community.

Abstract
BACKGROUND As places of both residence and work, what constitutes "good quality care" in residential aged care requires consideration of staffs' perspectives. OBJECTIVE A meta-synthesis of the qualitative literature was conducted exploring residential aged care staff perspectives on "quality of care." METHODS Six electronic databases were searched for articles that met the screening inclusion criteria. This meta-synthesis was informed by the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines, and included studies were critically appraised using JBI SUMARI. Two independent reviewers conducted thematic network mapping and analysis of included articles, with oversight from three additional reviewers. RESULTS Forty-seven articles were included, with findings summarised into four organising themes and nine basic themes. The four organising themes about quality care from staff perspectives include direct care, professional values and competence, the care environment and organisational/regulatory factors. CONCLUSION Staff describe a wide range of factors that they perceived to influence the quality of care. Some may feel motivated to leave employment in aged care, due to organisational pressures that make staff unable to uphold what they perceive as an acceptable standard of care. There is tension between professional values and organisation/regulatory factors-regulation should be enacted at a level that supports good practice and staff's moral integrity. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE This review found that while person-centred care is now well established as the benchmark of quality care in residential aged care homes, achieving it in reality remains challenged by limitations on staff members' time, resources and sometimes their competencies and the regularity of their employment.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To describe and analyze the current nursing regulations across countries in the Region of the Americas. METHODS A country comparative analysis was carried out by gathering information from the ministries of health, nursing schools, councils, associations, and boards in 2018. The main categories evaluated were type of regulatory bodies, requirements for initial professional registration, and registration renewal. RESULTS All countries regulate the nursing profession through a regulatory body. Competency exams for initial registration are required in the United States, Canada, and most Caribbean countries. Registration renewal is required in 54.3% of the countries. Continuing education is required for professional registration renewal in the United States, Canada, and 53% of Caribbean countries. Labor hours are required in the United States and Canada. CONCLUSION Regulations promote and protect professional integrity. The Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization recommends that countries make efforts to evaluate competency and training, consider the use of competency exams for initial registration, and add continuing education as requirements for registration renewal.

Abstract
AIMS AND OBJECTIVES To describe the views on the needs of health specialists to consider when developing a digital gaming solution for children and families in a paediatric day surgery. BACKGROUND Children's day surgery treatment is often cancelled at the last minute for various reasons, for example due to the lack of information. Digital gaming solutions could help families to be better oriented to the coming treatment. Despite the increasing demands for mHealth systems, there is not enough evidence-based information from the health specialist perspective for developing a digital gaming solution. DESIGN A qualitative descriptive study was conducted. METHODS Health specialists (N = 15) including 11 nurses, one physiotherapist and four doctors from different areas from one university hospital in Finland were recruited using a snowball sampling method. Semi-structured, face-to-face interviews were conducted in March and April 2019. The data were analysed using inductive conduct analyses. The COREQ checklist was used to report the data collection, analysis and the results. RESULTS The data yielded 469 open codes, 21 sub-categories, three upper categories and one main category. The main category the digital gaming solution to support knowledge, care and guidance in children's day surgery included three upper categories: (a) support for preoperative information and guidance, (b) support for intra-operative information and care, and (c) support for postoperative information, care and guidance. CONCLUSION Digital gaming solutions could be used to help children and families to be better prepared for upcoming treatments, to support communication in different languages and to improve children's pain management after operations. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE Evidence-based information is important to ensure that future digital solutions answer the real needs of the staff and patients. There is a need for families and children's views to be taken into consideration when developing digital gaming solutions in the hospital context.

Abstract
AIMS The purpose of this paper was to perform a bibliometric analysis of the production of qualitative research in scientific journals through aggregation by levels and to identify factors of diversity, such as types of designs, in qualitative research on the experience of having an intestinal stoma between 2002 and 2018. DESIGN Descriptive bibliometric study focused on the production of qualitative research on the subject of study, on three levels: micro, meso and macro. METHODS Databases such as PubMed, CINAHL, Web of Knowledge, Scopus, SciELO, CUIDEN, Lilacs and Google Scholar were used to collect the data, between August - November 2018. RESULTS Nursing was the main area of knowledge. Brazil was the predominant country of origin. The most productive journal was the Journal of Wound, Ostomy & Continence Nursing. English and Portuguese were the main languages of scientific communication. The number of authors was typically between 2 and 6. Authors conducted descriptive and phenomenological studies. CONCLUSION The present bibliometric study helps us to map the qualitative research on the experiences of individuals with an intestinal stoma and to understand patterns in the designs, methods, disciplines and journals involved in this area of research. This will allow nurses to have a leading contribution to stoma care at their disposal.
