Abstract
BACKGROUND The present study aimed to investigate how depressive symptoms affect bodyweight change (gain and loss), and how this association is intertwined with other psychosocial and biomedical factors in the adult general population. METHODS In a population-based, prospective, observational single-center cohort study in the Rhine-Main-Region, Germany (Gutenberg Health Study GHS) with N = 12,220 participants, we analyzed baseline and five year follow-up data with logistic regressions separately for bodyweight gain and loss (vs. stable bodyweight). RESULTS Overall, 19.8 % of participants gained bodyweight of at least 5 %. More female participants were affected than male participants (23.3 % vs. 16.6 %). Regarding weight loss, overall, 12.4 % lost >5 % of bodyweight; participants were more often female than male (13.0 % vs. 11.8 %). Depressive symptoms at baseline were associated with weight gain (OR = 1.03, 95 % CI = 1.02-1.05). In models controlling for psychosocial and biomedical factors, female gender, younger age, lower socioeconomic status and smoking cessation were associated with weight gain. In weight loss, there was no overall significant effect of depressive symptoms (OR = 1.01 [0.99; 1.03]). Weight loss was associated with female gender, diabetes, less physical activity, and higher BMI at baseline. Only in women, smoking and cancer were associated with weight loss. LIMITATIONS Depressive symptoms were assessed via self-report. Voluntary weight loss cannot be determined. CONCLUSIONS Significant weight change frequently occurs in middle to old adulthood resulting from a complex interplay of psychosocial and biomedical factors. Associations with age, gender, somatic illness and health behavior (e.g. smoking cessation) provide important information for the prevention of unfavorable weight change.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Depression in older adults is becoming an increasing concern. As depressive symptoms change over time, it is important to understand the determinants of change in depressive symptoms. The aim of our study is to use a longitudinal study design to explore the predictors of change, remission and incident depression in older patients with multimorbidity. METHODS Data from the MultiCare cohort study were used. The cohort studied 3,189 multimorbid general practice patients aged 65-85. Data were collected during personal interviews. Depressive symptoms were assessed using the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS-15). Predictors of change in depressive symptoms were determined using multivariate linear regression, while multivariate logistic regression was used to analyze predictors of remission and incident depression. Models included depressive symptoms at baseline and follow-up, socio-demographics and data on health status and social support. RESULTS Overall, 2,746 participants with complete follow-up data were analyzed. Mean age was 74.2 years, 59.2% were female, and 11.3% were classified as depressed at baseline. Burden of multimorbidity and social support were statistically significant predictors in all regression analyses. Further predictors of change in depressive symptoms were: income, pain, nursing grade, self-rated health and self-efficacy. LIMITATIONS The sample size for prediction of remission limited statistical certainty. Assessment of depressive symptoms using GDS-15 differs from routine clinical diagnoses of depression. CONCLUSIONS Predictors of change in depressive symptoms in older multimorbid patients are similar to those predicting remission and incident depression, and do not seem to differ significantly from other older patient populations with depressive symptoms.

Abstract
Social support from a spouse, long-term partner, or someone who provides emotional or instrumental support may protect against consequences of aging, including mediating behavioral stress reactivity and altering neurobiological process that underlie short-term stress responses. Therefore, long-term social bonding may have behavioral and neurobiological benefits. The socially monogamous prairie vole provides a valuable experimental model for investigating the benefits of long-term social bonds on short-term stress reactivity in aging animals, given their unique social structure of forming enduring opposite-sex bonds, living in family groups, and bi-parental rearing strategies. Male-female pairs of long-term, cohabitating prairie voles were investigated for short-term behavioral and neuroendocrine stress reactivity following either long-term social pairing (control), or a period of social isolation. In Experiment 1, social isolation was associated with altered behavioral reactivity to an acute swim stressor, and greater neural activation in the hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus, as well as specifically the parvocellular region, following the swim stressor (vs. control). In Experiment 2, social isolation was associated with greater corticosterone reactivity following an acute restraint stressor (vs. control). No sex differences were observed. Exploratory correlation and subgroup analyses revealed systematic relationships among various demographic variables (such as age of the subjects, amount of time the pair cohabitated together, and number of litters the pair reared together) and the behavioral and neuroendocrine outcome measures. These findings may inform our understanding of the benefits of long-term social bonding on modulating short-term behavioral and neuroendocrine responses to stress.LAY SUMMARYReceiving social support from a long-term spouse or partner, or having a strong support network from friends, may have important health benefits as people age. In aging monogamous prairie voles, social isolation from a long-term social partner disrupted behaviors and short-term stress responses, whereas living with a long-term partner protected against these disruptions. This research is important for our understanding of the benefits of social support on stress responses as we age.

Abstract
MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are short, noncoding RNAs functioning as regulators of the
transcription of protein-coding genes in eukaryotes. During the last two decades,
studies on miRNAs indicate that they have potential as diagnostic and prognostic
biomarkers for a wide range of cancers. Research interest in miRNAs has moved to
embrace further medical disciplines, including neuropsychiatric disorders, comparing
miRNA expression and mRNA targets between patient and control blood samples and
postmortem brain tissues, as well as in animal models of neuropsychiatric disorders.
This manuscript reviews recent findings on miRNAs implicated in the pathology of mood
disorders, schizophrenia, and autism, as well as their diagnostic potential, and
their potential as tentative targets for future therapeutics. The plausible
contribution of X chromosome miRNAs to the larger prevalence of major depression
among women is also evaluated.
