Prevalence of thinness, overweight and obesity among Tibetan adolescents aged 12-17 years

The Association between Obesity Susceptibility and Polymorphisms of MC4R, SH2B1, and NEGR1 in Tibetans

Background: A high-altitude environment has inhibitory effects on obesity. Tibetans are not a high-risk population for obesity, but there are still obese individuals within that population. Obesity has become a worldwide health problem, and previous studies have found that obesity is closely associated with hereditary factors. Few studies have investigated obesity in Tibetans, and the association between gene polymorphisms and obesity in Tibetans remains unclear. Methods: Our study investigated the fat mass of 140 native Tibetan individuals (70 men and 70 women) from Lhasa and analyzed the associations between polymorphisms of melanocortin 4 receptor (MC4R), Src homology 2B adapter protein 1 (SH2B1), and neuronal growth regulator 1 (NEGR1) and obesity. Result: Among Tibetan individuals, there were differences in genotype and allele frequencies between those in the obesity group and those in the healthy group at MC4R (rs17782313) and SH2B1 (rs7359397). The polymorphisms of MC4R (rs17782313) were associated with fat mass and obesity in Tibetan men and women, and there was an association between SH2B1 (rs7359397) polymorphisms and fat mass and obesity in Tibetan men. However, polymorphisms of NEGR1 (rs3101336) were not associated with fat mass or obesity in Tibetan individuals. Conclusion: Among Tibetan individuals, polymorphisms of MC4R (rs17782313) and SH2B1 (rs7359397) were associated with obesity, but NEGR1 (rs3101336) polymorphisms were not associated with obesity.

Relationship between a body shape index and muscle strength index in Chinese university students: a cross-sectional survey

BACKGROUND

The problem of overweight obesity and decrease in muscle strength among university students has become an indisputable fact. In this study, a comprehensive index reflecting obesity degree a body shape index (ABSI) and a comprehensive index reflecting muscle strength muscle strength index (MSI) were studied to analyze the cross-sectional correlations existing between them.

METHODS

This study began recruiting participants and conducting the test survey in April 2022 and closed in July 2022. Basic condition, height, weight, waist circumference, grip strength, pull-up (boys), bent-leg sit-up (girls), and standing long jump were tested on 12,046 (boys: 6011, 49.90%) university students aged 19-22 years in China, and ABSI and MSI were calculated separately. ABSI was categorized into 5 groups according to age and sex, namely ABSI < 5th percentile (A), 5th ≤ ABSI < 25th percentile (B), 25th ≤ ABSI < 75th percentile (C), 75th ≤ ABSI < 95th percentile (D) and ABSI ≥ 95th percentile (E). The comparison of MSI between different ABSI groups was performed using effect size, and the association between them was performed by curve estimation analysis.

RESULTS

The association between ABSI and MSI of Chinese university students showed an inverted "U" curve. The effect of increased ABSI on MSI was greater in university girls compared to boys. The ABSI of boys was (0.080 ± 0.010) and MSI was (-0.005 ± 2.080); the ABSI of girls was (0.079 ± 0.008) and MSI was (-0.017 ± 1.867). Overall, university students ABSI was at a relatively high point for MSI between 0.050 and 0.100. The university students ABSI at 0.150 had an MSI of -1.229 for boys and - 2.779 for girls.

CONCLUSION

The ABSI of Chinese university students showed an inverted "U"-shaped curve relationship with MSI, and university students with low or high ABSI had lower MSI. The effect of increasing ABSI on the decrease of MSI was more obvious for girls than for boys.

Somatotype altitudinal variation and its relationship with the nutritional status of children in the Jujuy province, Argentina

OBJECTIVES

To study the somatotype variations adjusted by altitude, age, sex, and BMI categories, and to assess the health status of the children population.

METHODS

A sample of 460 children aged 8-13 years was assessed in a cross-sectional study conducted on anthropometric measurements between 2011 and 2015. Data were categorized into two age groups: Group 8-10, Group 11-13 and two altitudes: Highland (>2000 masl), lowland (<2000 masl). The somatotypic profile was determined by the Heath and Carter's study method and the Body Mass Index was used to assess children nutritional status. Generalized linear latent variable models (GLLVM) were performed to test the association between somatotype and geographic altitude. Individual age-sex specific somatotypes were plotted in a two-dimension somatochart, and group dispersion was displayed by the somatotype attitudinal mean.

RESULTS

The sample has an overall endomorph-mesomorph body type, exhibiting different patterns when altitude and sex were considered. The GLLVM showed that the whole somatotype was different by altitude. Highland children occupied central to endomorphic-mesomorphic places in the somatochart with lower variation. In both altitudes, girls exhibited higher endomorphy than boys. Several discrepancies between the BMI categorization and the somatotype were observed.

CONCLUSIONS

Jujenean children show differential body patterns across geographic altitude which exhibit age and sex variations. Children have a differential tendency to a fat mass gain. The BMI showed some inconsistencies with somatotype, leading to a misclassification of the child nutritional status, this highlights the importance of not to treat the BMI in isolation but with other determinants of the health status.

Secular trends and sociodemographic determinants of thinness, overweight and obesity among Chinese children and adolescents aged 7-18 years from 2010 to 2018

Background

Most studies have focused on overweight/obesity and its secular trend, with insufficient studies on the factors influencing thinness and trends recently. To examine the trends of prevalence and sociodemographic determinants of thinness, overweight, and obesity among Chinese children and adolescents aged 7 to 18 years from 2010 to 2018.

Methods

This study was based on cross-sectional data of 11,234 children and adolescents aged 7 to 18 years from the Chinese Family Panel Studies (CFPS) in 2010, 2014, and 2018, including anthropometric and sociodemographic characteristics variables. The nutritional status of each individual was determined according to China and WHO criteria. The demographic characteristics of different subgroups were tested by chi-square, and log-binomial regression was used to analyze the trend of prevalence and the relationship between sociodemographic characteristics and different nutritional statuses.

Results

After adjusting for age, from 2010 to 2018, the overall prevalence of thinness decreased, and the prevalence of overweight increased in Chinese children and adolescents. The overall prevalence of obesity declined in boys and increased in girls, but in adolescents aged 16-18 years, it increased significantly. Log-binomial regression analysis showed that among all subjects, time (years), 16-18 years were negatively associated with thinness, while 13-15 years, walking to school, large family size, and paternal age at childbirth older than 30 years old were positively associated with thinness; 10-12/13-15/16-18 years, boarding at school, medium and large family sizes, and mother's education at junior middle school/junior high school and above were negatively associated with overweight/obesity, while time (years), boys were positively associated with overweight/obesity in the multivariate model by adjusting for the statistically significant factors (all p < 0.05).

Conclusion

Chinese children and adolescents are facing a double burden of malnutrition. Future public health policies and interventions should prioritize high-risk groups specifically young age groups, boys, larger family sizes and so on.
