Effect of a theory-based educational intervention for enhancing nutrition and physical activity among Iranian women: a randomised control trial

Nutrition self-efficacy intervention to improve nutritional status of Iranian older adults

OBJECTIVES

Older adults are a vulnerable group that is at risk of poor nutritional status, which can lead to disease and increase their healthcare costs. Our study aimed to investigate the impact of a self-efficacy intervention on the nutritional status of older adults.

METHODS

A controlled before and after study was conducted on 110 older adults in the Mashhad, Iran, from 2020 to 2022. Participants were randomly allocated to the intervention (n = 55) and control groups (n = 55). Participants in the intervention group received educational training that was based on the self-efficacy theory. The control group received the routine care. Data collection tools included demographic information questionnaire, Mini Nutritional Assessment Questionnaire, and standard self-efficacy questionnaire. The questionnaires were completed at baseline (before intervention), instantly after the intervention, and at 3-months follow-up by participants in both groups. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 25 and the significance level was considered less than 0.05.

RESULTS

The Mean of nutritional status in the intervention group, at the baseline, immediately after intervention and 3 months of follow-up were 25.1 ± 2.3, 28.3 ± 5.2 and 27.6 ± 6., respectively. This increase was significant (p < 0.001). Our findings revealed that self-efficacy among participants in the intervention group significantly changed (P < 0.001) across time from baseline through follow-up. There was no significant difference in the mean of self-efficacy and nutritional status in the control group during the study period (P > 0.05).

CONCLUSION

This current study provided a basis to examine in the effectiveness of such intervention using a properly powered randomized controlled study. Therefore, it can be concluded that self-efficacy interventions are a promising approach to improving the nutritional behaviors of the older adults.

The Impact of Training Based on the Pender Health Promotion Model on Self-Efficacy: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

OBJECTIVE

The concept of self-efficacy is a determining factor in many behaviours related to health promotion and health education. Several pilot studies have been conducted in different parts of the world on different populations regarding the impact of training based on the Pender Health Promotion Model on self-efficacy, yielding conflicting results. Therefore, the present systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted with the aim of evaluating and summarizing the results of studies on the impact of training based on the Pender Health Promotion Model on self-efficacy.

STUDY INCLUSION AND EXCLUSION CRITERIA

Original scientific research articles; Interventional studies; Studies investigating the effects of education based on the Pender Health Promotion Model on self-efficacy; Studies irrelevant to the objective; Cross-sectional studies; case reports; and papers presented in conferences; letters to the editor; systematic and meta-analysis studies.

DATA EXTRACTION

Two independent reviewers extracted data and assessed the quality of the 18 included studies using a pre-prepared checklist for the systematic review and meta-analysis process.

DATA SYNTHESIS

We conducted meta-analyses and reported the characteristics, outcomes, and risk of bias of studies.

METHODS

The present study was conducted according to PRISMA guidelines until December 2022. The quality assessment of the included articles for meta-analysis was performed using the JBI checklist. Heterogeneity of the studies was calculated using the I2 statistics, and Egger's regression intercept was used to assess publication bias.

RESULTS

In the initial search, 13,943 studies were found, and after excluding studies irrelevant to the research objective, a total of 18 articles were included in the meta-analysis. These articles represented a sample size of 1015 individuals in the intervention group and 999 individuals in the control group. The combined results of the studies showed a significant increase in self-efficacy in the intervention group when compared to the control group (1.788 ± .267; CI: 95%, P < .001). With an increase in the year of study and the quality assessment score of the articles, the effect of the intervention decreased (P < .001).

CONCLUSION

The results of this study indicated that training based on the Pender Health Promotion Model significantly increased self-efficacy. Therefore, it seems that training based on this model can have positive effects on individuals' self-efficacy.

An educational intervention based on family-centered empowerment model to modify high-risk behaviors of brucellosis via mother education

The relative contribution of a theory-based intervention to modify high-risk behaviors in training programs is a major priority that remains an open question. Here, we tested whether the family-centered empowerment model used in the educational intervention was effective to modify high-risk behaviors of brucellosis via mother education. A quasi experimental study was conducted on 200 women presenting to healthcare practices in rural areas of Torbat-e Jam, Iran, from April 2020 to February 2021. Four rural areas were randomly assigned to the control and intervention groups. The intervention group received the training program, which included four 2-h sessions and consulting support via social network and messaging service. The control group did not receive any training. SPSS₁₆ was implemented to test multiple statistical analyses. Our finding showed in the intervention group compared with the control group, knowledge, attitude, self-efficacy, self-esteem, and behavior outcomes were significantly changed (P < 0.001) across time during baseline through follow-up. Likewise, there are no differences (P > 0.05) in the change in construct of the family-centered empowerment model and risk behaviors in the control group from baseline to follow-up. Intervention based on a family-centered empowerment model is possible and very acceptable to modify high-risk behaviors of brucellosis by increasing an individual's knowledge, changing attitude, and promoting self-efficacy and self-esteem.Trial registration: Iranian Registry of Clinical Trials (IRCT), IRCT20160619028529N12. Effect of educational intervention on improvement of physical activities of middle-aged women

BACKGROUND

Regular physical activity has important health benefits for women. The present study aimed to investigate the effect of theory-based educational interventions on the improvement of physical activities of middle-aged women.

METHODS

This experimental study was conducted on 160 middle-aged women referred to Ahwaz health centers Iran in 2017 who were selected through the cluster sampling method. They were randomly divided into two groups: intervention (n = 80) and control (n = 80). The educational intervention for the experimental group consisted of 4 consultation and 4 follow-up sessions. The study outcomes included physical activity change, self-efficacy, decision-making balance, and the International Physical Activity Questionnaire, which were measured before the intervention and 2 months after that. The data were analyzed using the SPSS19 software as well as the Chi-square, independent t-test and paired t-test.

RESULTS

After the intervention, the mean scores of preparedness for change, decision-making balance, perceived self-efficacy, pre-thinking, thinking, preparation, practice and maintenance were significantly different in both the experimental and control groups (P value < 0.05). The t-test showed that after the educational intervention, the mean score of physical activity was significantly higher in the experimental group than in the control group (726.3 ± 201.6 and 339.8 ± 90.2, respectively) (P value < 0.001).

CONCLUSION

The findings of this study showed that the theory-based educational intervention was effective on the improvement of the middle-aged women's physical activities. Therefore, it is suggested that a theory-based educational program be designed and implemented in order to increase the physical activities of this group.
