Abstract
In nursery diets, ingredients with high protein content and highly digestible nutrients, such as corn-fermented protein product with added yeast mass (GDDY), can be included as an alternative to common protein sources. This study investigated the dietary inclusion of GDDY as an alternative protein source on growth performance and intestinal health of weaned pigs. A total of 594 weaned pigs (5.7 ± 0.9 kg; 18.5 days of age) were allotted to 36 pens in a randomized incomplete block design. Pens were assigned to one of 4 dietary treatments: CON: a common nursery feeding program; SBM75: CON diet replacing 75% of soybean meal (SBM) with GDDY; FM/ESBM: CON diet without fish meal (FM) and enzyme-treated SBM (ESBM) + GDDY; GDDY50: CON diet replacing 50% of SBM, FM, and ESBM with GDDY. Experimental diets were formulated to meet nutrient requirements of nursery pigs and provided in meal form through four phases during the nursery period. Pig growth performance was assessed on days 7, 14, 21, 28, 42, and 53. Pen fecal score was assessed daily from days 0 to 14, and 3 times per week from days 15 to 35. Intestinal health was assessed based on plasma immunoglobulin A (IgA) concentration and the differential sugar absorption test. The total tract digestibility of dry matter (DM), crude protein (CP), gross energy (GE), and phosphorus was also evaluated. From days 0 to 7 and days 7 to 14, dietary treatment had no effect (P > 0.05) on BW, ADG, and ADFI. For the rest of the experimental period, ADG and ADFI were greater (P < 0.05) in pigs fed CON in comparison with those fed SBM75 and GDDY50 and did not differ from pigs fed FM/ESBM. Pigs fed GDDY50 tended (P = 0.082) to have greater serum IgA concentration on day 20 when compared with SBM75 and FM/ESBM pigs. There were no differences among dietary treatments for DM, CP, and GE digestibility. Phosphorus digestibility was higher in FM/ESBM (P < 0.05) compared with SBM75 and GDDY50. These results supported the hypothesis that GDDY can be incorporated in nursery pig diets during the first couple weeks after weaning without affecting growth performance. However, in the late nursery period, inclusion levels starting at 14% can compromise performance.

Abstract
Nitrogen (N) excretion and emissions can be reduced in fattening pigs by reducing dietary crude protein (CP) levels. Effects of this strategy are well documented for moderate CP reduction, but little literature exists on further CP reduction made possible by free isoleucine, histidine, and leucine. This trial evaluated the effects of 2 levels of reduction in CP on growth performance, N balance, and gaseous emissions. Forty-eight pigs were allocated to 12 gaseous emission-measuring chambers at 28 kg live weight. Three dietary treatments (CTRL; -1.2pt; -2.4pt), with a CP content, respectively, of 18.1%, 16.9%, and 15.0% in phase 1 (28 to 48 kg) and 16.1%, 15.0%, and 13.8% in phase 2 (48 to 80 kg), were fed ad libitum. Growth performance was recorded for each phase. Body lipid and protein composition were analyzed by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry in 2 animals per chamber at the beginning and end of the trial. These results were used to calculate the N balance. Slurry volume and composition were measured at the end of the trial. Ammonia, methane, and nitrous oxide emissions were recorded continuously. Data were analyzed with a general linear model including the linear and quadratic effect of CP reduction and phase as fixed effects. A trend for a quadratic effect of CP reduction on feed intake was observed (P = 0.085) with a decrease from CTRL to -1.2pt and then an increase with the -2.4pt treatment. Daily gain and gain to feed were improved by the low CP diets in phase 1 but were degraded in phase 2 (phase × CP interaction, P < 0.001) while body composition was not affected. Nitrogen excretion decreased with CP reduction (linear effect, P = 0.023) but tended to plateau with the low CP diets (quadratic effect, P = 0.081). Methane emissions per kg of gain were reduced with CP reduction (linear effect, P = 0.031). Ammonia emissions decreased with CP reduction, mostly in phase 1 (phase × CP interaction, P = 0.015); however, the emission factor (g N-NH3 / g urinary N) was not affected. Nitrous oxide emissions were not affected by CP reduction and its emission factor (g N-N2O / g N) tended to increase (linear effect, P = 0.07). Slurry ammonia-N decreased (linear effect, P < 0.023; quadratic effect, P = 0.049), but other slurry components were not significantly impacted. In this trial, a plateau in N excretion and emission reduction was reached with the -2.4pt treatment. Nevertheless, it is important to study such a reduction in conditions closer to commercial ones.

Abstract
The objectives were to evaluate the effects of standardized ileal digestible (SID) His:Lys ratio above the current NRC requirement on growth performance, intestinal health, and mobilization of His-containing proteins, including hemoglobin, carnosine, and trypsinogen, in nursery pigs from 7 to 11 kg body weight (BW). Forty pigs (26 d of age; initial BW of 7.1 ± 0.5 kg) were allotted to 5 dietary treatments based on a randomized complete block design with sex and initial BW as blocks. Dietary treatments were supplemented with varying SID His to Lys ratios of 26%, 32%, 38%, 43%, and 49% and fed to pigs for 14 d (SID Lys = 1.22%). Feed intake and BW were recorded at d 0, 7, and 14 to measure growth performance. Blood samples were collected on d 12. Pigs were euthanized on d 14 to collect pancreas, longissimus dorsi muscles, mid-jejunum, and jejunal mucosa. Data were analyzed using the Proc Mixed of SAS. Growth performance was not affected, whereas varying SID His to Lys ratio affected hemoglobin (P < 0.05, max: 12 g/dL at 36%), immunoglobulin A (IgA, P < 0.05, min: 1.25 μg/mg at 35%) in jejunal mucosa, villus height (P = 0.065, max: 536 μm at 40%) in jejunum, trypsinogen (P = 0.083, max: 242 pg/mg at 41%) in pancreas, and carnosine (P = 0.051, max: 4.7 ng/mg at 38%) in muscles. Varying SID His to Lys ratios linearly increased (P < 0.05, from 1.95 to 2.80 nmol/mg) protein carbonyl in muscles and decreased (P < 0.05, from 29.1% to 26.9%) enterocyte proliferation. In conclusion, SID His to Lys ratio between 35% and 41% in diets fed to nursery pigs at 7 to 11 kg enhanced intestinal health and maximized concentrations of His-containing proteins, indicating that His-containing proteins are effective response criteria when determining His requirement.

Abstract
Infant mortality of low birth body weight (LBBW) piglets can reach 10% and is mainly due to gut and immune system immaturity which can lead to a higher risk in the long term. This study aimed to assess the impact of birth body weight (BBW) on piglet metabolism, gut status, and microbial profile from weaning to 21 d postweaning. At birth, 32 piglets were selected for their BBW and inserted into the normal BBW (NBBW:1.38 ± 0.09 g) or the LBBW (0.92 ± 0.07 g) group. The piglets were weighed weekly from weaning (d0) to d21. At d9 and d21, 8 piglets/group were slaughtered to obtain the distal jejunum for morphology, immunohistochemistry, and gene expression analysis, colon content for microbiota and short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) analysis, and intestinal content for pH measurement. Blood was collected for metabolomic, haptoglobin (Hp), and reactive oxygen metabolite (ROM) analysis. The LBBW group had a lower body weight (BW) throughout the study (P < 0.01), a lower average daily gain from d9-d21 (P = 0.002), and lower feed intake (P = 0.02). The LBBW piglets had lower Hp at d9 (P = 0.03), higher ROMs at d21 (P = 0.06), and a net alteration of the amino acid (AA) metabolism at d9 and d21. A higher expression of NFKB2 was observed in the LBBW piglets at d9 (P = 0.003) and d21 (P < 0.001). MYD88 expression was enhanced in NBBW piglets at d9 (P < 0.001). The LBBW piglets had a lower villus height, absorptive mucosal surface (P = 0.01), and villus height:crypt depth ratio (P = 0.02), and a greater number of T-lymphocytes in both the epithelium and the crypts (P < 0.001) at d21. At d21, the LBBW piglets had higher lactic acid, acetate, butyrate, and valerate, and also higher SCFA in the colon (P < 0.05). The LBBW piglets had a higher Shannon index (P = 0.01) at d9 and a higher abundance of SCFA-fermenting bacteria. In conclusion, the present study confirmed that LBBW could impact the gut mucosal structure, immunity, and inflammatory and oxidative status, leading to an altered AA metabolism, and delaying the recovery from weaning.

Abstract
A total of 300 pigs (DNA 400 × 200, Columbus, NE), initially 11.1 kg, were used in a study to evaluate the effects of increasing amounts of high-protein distillers dried grains (HP DDG) on growth performance and to estimate its energy value relative to corn. Pigs were weaned, placed in pens with five pigs each, and fed a common diet for 21 d after weaning. Then, pens were assigned to treatments in a randomized complete block design. There were 5 treatments with 12 replicates per treatment. Treatments consisted of 0, 10, 20, 30, or 40% HP DDG, formulated by changing only the amounts of corn and feed-grade amino acids. Pigs were weighed weekly for 21 d to evaluate average daily gain (ADG), average daily feed intake (ADFI), and gain-to-feed ratio (G:F). Caloric efficiency was obtained by multiplying ADFI by kcal of net energy (NE) per kg of diet and dividing by ADG. The NE values for corn and soybean meal were obtained from NRC (2012), and initial estimates for HP DDG NE were derived from the Noblet et al. (1994) equation. The energy of HP DDG was estimated based on caloric efficiency relative to the diet without HP DDG. Pigs fed diets with increasing HP DDG had a linear decrease (P < 0.01) in ADG, ADFI, and final body weight. There was a tendency for a quadratic response (P = 0.051) in G:F, with the greatest G:F observed for pigs fed diets with 40% HP DDG. There was a linear reduction (P < 0.05) in caloric efficiency with increasing amounts of HP DDG, indicating the initial NE estimate of HP DDG was underestimated. The use of caloric efficiency to estimate the energy value of HP DDG presents several limitations. This approach assumes that the NE values of corn and soybean meal are accurate and does not take into account possible changes in body composition, which can influence the G:F response as leaner pigs are more efficient. In conclusion, increasing HP DDG in the diet linearly decreased ADG and ADFI. Using caloric efficiency to estimate energy content relative to corn, the HP DDG used in this study was estimated to be 97.3% of the energy value of corn. Direct or indirect calorimetry is needed to confirm this value.

Abstract
Previous study showed that low protein diet-fed pigs are characterized by lower histidine concentration in the serum and muscle, suggesting that histidine may involve in protein-restricted response. Thus, the current study mainly investigated the effects of dietary histidine on growth performance, blood biochemical parameters and amino acids, intestinal morphology, and microbiota communities in low protein diet-challenged-piglets. The results showed that protein restriction inhibited growth performance, blood biochemical parameters and amino acids, and gut microbiota but had little effect on intestinal morphology. Dietary supplementation with histidine markedly enhanced serum histidine level and restored tryptophan concentration in low protein diet-fed piglets, while growth performance and intestinal morphology were not markedly altered in histidine-treated piglets. In addition, histidine exposure failed to affect bacterial diversity (observed species, Shannon, Simpson, Chao1, ACE, and phylogenetic diversity), but histidine-treated piglets exhibited higher abundances of Butyrivibrio and Bacteroides compared with the control and protein-restricted piglets. In conclusion, dietary histidine in low protein diet enhanced histidine concentration and affected gut microbiota (Butyrivibrio and Bacteroides) but failed to improve growth performance and intestinal morphology.

Abstract
An experiment was conducted to test the hypothesis that excess dietary Leu affects metabolism of branched-chain amino acids (BCAA) in growing pigs. Forty barrows (initial body weight [BW]: 30.0 ± 2.7 kg) were housed individually in metabolism crates and allotted to 5 dietary treatments (8 replicates per treatment) in a randomized complete block design. The 5 diets were based on identical quantities of corn, soybean meal, wheat, and barley and designed to contain 100%, 150%, 200%, 250%, or 300% of the requirement for standardized ileal digestible Leu. Initial and final (day 15) BW of pigs were recorded. Daily feed consumption was also recorded. Urine and fecal samples were collected for 5 d following 7 d of adaptation to the diets. At the end of the experiment, blood and tissue samples were collected to analyze plasma urea N (PUN), plasma and hypothalamic serotonin, tissue BCAA, serum and tissue branched-chain α-keto acids, and messenger ribonucleic acid abundance of genes involved in BCAA metabolism. Results indicated that acid detergent fiber, average daily feed intake, and gain-to-feed ratio decreased (linear, P < 0.05) as dietary Leu increased. A trend (linear, P = 0.082) for decreased N retention and decreased (linear, P < 0.05) biological value of dietary protein was also observed, and PUN increased (linear, P < 0.05) as dietary Leu increased. A quadratic reduction (P < 0.05) in plasma serotonin and a linear reduction (P < 0.05) in hypothalamic serotonin were observed with increasing dietary Leu. Concentrations of BCAA in liver increased (linear, P < 0.001), whereas concentrations of BCAA in skeletal muscle decreased (linear, P < 0.05) as dietary Leu increased. Concentration of α-ketoisovalerate was reduced (linear and quadratic, P < 0.001) in liver, skeletal muscle, and serum, and α-keto-β-methylvalerate was reduced (linear, P < 0.001; quadratic, P < 0.001) in skeletal muscle and serum. In contrast, α-keto isocaproate increased (linear, P < 0.05) in liver and skeletal muscle and also in serum (linear and quadratic, P < 0.001) with increasing dietary Leu. Expression of mitochondrial BCAA transaminase and of the E1α subunit of branched-chain α-keto acid dehydrogenase increased (linear, P < 0.05) in skeletal muscle as dietary Leu increased. In conclusion, excess dietary Leu impaired growth performance and nitrogen retention, which is likely a result of increased catabolism of Ile and Val, which in turn reduces availability of these amino acids resulting in reduced protein retention, and excess dietary Leu also reduced hypothalamic serotonin synthesis.

Abstract
Dose-response studies of dietary leucine (Leu) in weaners are needed for a proper diet formulation. Dietary Leu effect was assessed in a 3-weeks dose-response trial with a 2 (genotype) x 5 (diets) factorial arrangement on one-hundred weaned pigs (9 to 20 kg body weight (BW)). Pigs differed for a polymorphism at the aminoadipate-semialdehyde synthase (AASS) gene, involved in lysine (Lys) metabolism. Pigs received experimental diets (d7 to d28) differing for the standardized ileal digestible (SID) Leu:Lys: 70%, 85%, 100%, 115%, 130%. Daily feed intake (ADFI), daily gain (ADG) and feed:gain (F:G) in all pigs and ADG and F:G in two classes of BW were analyzed using regression analysis with curvilinear-plateau (CLP) and linear quadratic function (LQ) models. Amino acid (AA) concentrations in plasma, liver, muscle and urine were determined. AASS genotype did not affect the parameters. Dietary Leu affected performance parameters, with a maximum response for ADG and F:G between 100.5% and 110.7% SID Leu:Lys, higher than the usually recommended one, and between 110.5% and 115.4% and between 94.9% and 110.2% SID Leu:Lys for ADG for light and heavy pigs respectively. AA variations in tissues highlighted Leu role in protein synthesis and its influence on the other branched chain AAs.

Abstract
Following a request from the European Commission, the Panel on Additives and Products or Substances used in Animal Feed (FEEDAP) was asked to deliver a scientific opinion on l-histidine monohydrochloride (HCl) monohydrate produced by fermentation using Corynebacterium glutamicum KCCM 80172 when used as a nutritional additive in feed and water for drinking for all animal species. The production strain is genetically modified. The production strain and its recombinant DNA were not detected in the final product. l-Histidine HCl monohydrate manufactured by fermentation using C. glutamicum KCCM 80172 does not give rise to any safety concern regarding the genetic modification. The use of l-histidine HCl monohydrate produced by fermentation using C. glutamicum KCCM 80172 is safe for the target species when used as a nutritional additive to supplement the diet in appropriate amounts to cover the requirements, depending on the species, the physiological state of the animal, the performance level, the environmental conditions, the background amino acid composition of the unsupplemented diet and the status of some essential trace elements such as copper and zinc. l-Histidine HCl monohydrate produced using C. glutamicum KCCM 80172 supplemented at levels appropriate for the requirements of the target species is considered safe for the consumer. l-Histidine HCl monohydrate produced using C. glutamicum KCCM 80172 is not irritant to skin, is a mildly irritant to eyes, and it is not a skin sensitiser. The additive does not pose a risk to users by inhalation. The use of l-histidine HCl monohydrate produced by C. glutamicum KCCM 80172 in animal nutrition is not expected to represent a risk to the environment. l-Histidine HCl monohydrate is considered an efficacious source of the essential amino acid l-histidine for non-ruminant animal species. For the supplemental l-histidine to be as efficacious in ruminants as in non-ruminant species, it would require protection against degradation in the rumen.

Abstract
Histidine may be the sixth limiting amino acid (AA) in practical nursery diets supplemented with high amounts of feed-grade AA. Therefore, 2 experiments were conducted to determine the standardized ileal digestible (SID) His:Lys ratio requirement estimate for growth performance of 7- to 11-kg nursery pigs. A total of 360 and 350 pigs (DNA 241 × 600, Columbus, NE; initially 7.1 ± 0.31 and 6.6 ± 0.36 kg) were used in Exp. 1 and 2, respectively. There were 5 pigs per pen with 12 replicates per treatment in Exp. 1 and 10 replicates per treatment in Exp. 2. After weaning, pigs were fed a common pelleted diet for 10 d in Exp. 1 and 7 d in Exp. 2. Then, pens were assigned to treatments in a randomized complete block design with body weight (BW) as the blocking factor. Dietary treatments consisted of SID His:Lys ratios of 24%, 28%, 32%, 36%, 40%, and 44% in Exp. 1 and 24%, 28%, 30%, 32%, 34%, 36%, and 42% in Exp. 2. Experimental diets were fed in pellet form for 10 or 14 d in Exp. 1 and 2, followed by a common mash diet for 15 or 14 d, respectively. Data were analyzed using the GLIMMIX and NLMIXED procedures of SAS, fitting data with heterogeneous variance when needed. The competing statistical models utilized were quadratic polynomial, broken-line linear (BLL), and broken-line quadratic. In Exp. 1, increasing SID His:Lys ratio increased (quadratic, P = 0.001) ADG, ADFI, G:F, and day 10 BW. In Exp. 2, ADG, G:F, and day 14 BW increased (quadratic, P = 0.001), and ADFI increased linearly (P = 0.001) with increasing SID His:Lys ratio. The best-fitting model for all response variables analyzed was the BLL. In Exp. 1, requirement estimates were 29.7%, 29.1%, and 29.8% SID His:Lys ratio for ADG, ADFI, and G:F, respectively. In Exp. 2, the SID His:Lys ratio requirement estimates were 31.0% for ADG and 28.6% for G:F. These results suggest that the SID His requirement estimate for growth performance is no more than 31% of Lys and that the NRC (2012) SID His requirement of 34% of Lys may be overestimated for 7- to 11-kg pigs.
