Abstract
The online coupling of microchip electrophoresis (ME) as a fast, highly efficient, and low-cost miniaturized separation technique to mass spectrometry (MS) as an information-rich and sensitive characterization technique results in ME-MS an attractive tool for various applications. In this paper, we review the basic concepts and latest advances in technology for ME coupled to MS during the period of 2016-2021, covering microchip materials, structures, fabrication techniques, and interfacing to electrospray ionization (ESI)-MS and matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization-MS. Two critical issues in coupling ME and ESI-MS include the electrical connection used to define the electrophoretic field strength along the separation channel and the generation of the electrospray for MS detection, as well as, a miniaturized ESI-tip. The recent commercialization of ME-MS in zone electrophoresis and isoelectric focusing modes has led to the widespread application of these techniques in academia and industry. Here we summarize recent applications of ME-MS for the separation and detection of antibodies, proteins, peptides, carbohydrates, metabolites, and so on. Throughout the paper these applications are discussed in the context of benefits and limitations of ME-MS in comparison to alternative techniques.

Abstract
By combining separation efficiency data as a function of flow rate with the column permeability, the kinetic plot method allows to determine the limits of separation power (time vs. efficiency) of different chromatographic techniques and methods. The technique can be applied for all different types of chromatography (liquid, gas, or supercritical fluid), for different types of column morphologies (packed beds, monoliths, open tubular, micromachined columns), for pressure and electro-driven separations and in both isocratic and gradient elution mode. The present contribution gives an overview of the methods and calculations required to correctly determine these kinetic performance limits and their underlying limitations.

Abstract
Bulk micromachining of Si is demonstrated by the well-known metal-assisted chemical etching (MaCE). Si microstructures, having lateral dimension from 5 μm up to millimeters, are successfully sculpted deeply into Si substrate, as deep as >100 μm. The key ingredient of this success is found to be the optimizations of catalyst metal type and its morphology. Combining the respective advantages of Ag and Au in the MaCE as a Ag/Au bilayer configuration leads to quite stable etch reaction upon a prolonged etch duration up to >5 h. Further, the permeable nature of the optimized Ag/Au bilayer metal catalyst enables the etching of pattern features having very large lateral dimension. Problems such as the generation of micro/nanostructures and chemical attacks on the top of pattern surface are successfully overcome by process optimizations such as post-partum sonication treatment and etchant formulation control. The method can also be successful to vertical micromachining of Si substrate having other crystal orientations than Si(100), such as Si(110) and Si(111). The simple, easy, and low-cost nature of present approach may be a great help in bulk micromachining of Si for various applications such as microelectromechanical system (MEMS), micro total analysis system (μTAS), and so forth.

Abstract
We present a novel electrode configuration consisting of coplanar side electrode pairs integrated at the half height of the microchannels for the creation of a homogeneous electric field distribution as well as for synchronous optical and electrical measurements. For the integration of such electrodes in fused silica microsystems, a dedicated microfabrication method was utilized, whereby an intermediate bonding layer was applied to lower the temperature for fusion bonding to avoid thereby metal degradation and subsequently to preserve the electrode structures. Finally, we demonstrate the applicability of our devices with integrated electrodes for single cell electrical lysis and simultaneous fluorescence and impedance measurements for both cell counting and characterization.

Abstract
A previously proposed foil definition is applied in the design of injector/distributor structures for solid microfabricated column structures for capillary electrochromatography. In addition to a typical bifurcated distributor, an optimized design alternative with two different configurations is experimentally evaluated. Optimized designs yielded a flat profile for the injected sample with a maximum of 3% variation from the mean width, while it went up to 18% for the typical bifurcated distributor. The implemented electrokinetic injection approach enabled controlling the volume of the injected sample accurately without sacrificing the compactness of the device design. The width of the injected sample was directly proportional to the injection time, namely 165 and 218 μm base widths were obtained for 0.6 and 0.8s of feeding, respectively. Reducing the external porosity of the distributor by 85% compared to the typical design, optimized distributors caused a decrease in the mean flow velocity of up to 70%. However, having a flat initial plug shape enabled the separation of a mixture of Coumarin 440, 460, 480 and 540 at 1 mm downstream of the injection point in 80s, while it was even not possible to detect the C440 signal for a typical bifurcated design.
