Application of Dissolvable Layered Double Hydroxides As Sorbent in Dispersive Solid-Phase Extraction and Extraction by Co-Precipitation for the Determination of Aromatic Acid Anions

Development of a dispersive solid phase microextraction method based on the application of MgAl, NiAl, and CoAl-layered double hydroxides for the efficient removal of α- and β-naphthol isomers from water samples by capillary electrophoresis

The present work describes a quick, simple, and efficient method based on the use of layered double hydroxides (LDH) coupled to dispersive solid phase micro-extraction (DSPME) to remove α-naphthol (α-NAP) and β-naphthol (β-NAP) isomers from water samples. Three different LDHs (MgAl-LDH, NiAl-LDH, and CoAl-LDH) were used to study how the interlayer anion and molar ratio affected the removal performance. The critical factors in the DSPME procedure (pH, LDH amount, contact time) were optimized by the univariate method under the optimal conditions: pH, 4-8; LDH amount, 5 mg; and contact time, 2.5 min. The method can be successfully applied in real sample waters, removing NAP isomers even in ultra-trace concentrations. The large volume sample stacking (LVSS-CE) technique provides limits of detections (LODs) of 5.52 µg/L and 6.36 µg/L for α-naphthol and β-naphthol, respectively. The methodology's precision was evaluated on intra- and inter-day repeatability, with %RSD less than 10% in all cases. The MgAl/Cl--LDH selectivity was tested in the presence of phenol and bisphenol A, with a removal rate of >92.80%. The elution tests suggest that the LDH MgAl/Cl--LDH could be suitable for pre-concentration of α-naphthol and β-naphthol in future works.

The magnetic layered double hydroxide/zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 nanocomposite coupled with HPLC-MS/MS for the detection of heterocyclic aromatic amines in thermally processed meat

In this research, a novel magnetic nanocomposite (Fe3O4@Zn/Al-LABSA-LDH/ZIF-8) was synthesized using Fe3O4 as the magnetic core, layered double hydroxide (LDH) with linear alkylbenzene sulfonic acid (LABSA) intercalation and zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) as the shell. Benefiting from the intercalation of LABSA into LDH combined with ZIF-8, the multiple interactions, including π-π stacking, hydrogen bonding, and electrostatic interactions, conferred high selectivity and good extraction capability to the material towards heterocyclic aromatic amines (HAAs). Fe3O4@Zn/Al-LABSA-LDH@ZIF-8 was used as an adsorbent for magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) to enrich HAAs in thermally processed meat samples, followed by high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS) detection. The method exhibited a low detection limit (0.021-0.221 ng/g), good linearity (R2 ≥ 0.9999), high precision (RSD < 7.2 %), and satisfactory sample recovery (89.7 % -107.5 %). This research provides a promising approach for developing novel adsorbents in sample preparation and improving analytical performance.

Highly sensitive enantioselective spectrofluorimetric determination of R-/S-mandelic acid using l-tryptophan-modified amino-functional silica-coated N-doped carbon dots as novel high-throughput chiral nanoprobes

Amino-functional silica-coated N-doped carbon dots (NH2-SiO2-CDs) were covalently modified by l-tryptophan (chiral selector) by producing an amide bond between carboxyl groups of L-try and amino groups of NH2-SiO2-CDs to develop a novel high throughput chiral nanoprobes (L-try-CONH-SiO2-CDs) for highly sensitive and enantioselective quantification of S-/R-mandelic acid (S-/R-Man). The method showed a great difference between S- and R-isomers (enantioselectivity coefficient = 4.17) due to the ultra-stability of the Meisenheimer complex that was formed between S-isomer and nanoprobe (KS-Man/KR-man = 2122.7, where K is the binding-constant). At optimal experimental conditions, two linear ranges of 0.5-25.0 (LOD of 0.05 μM) and 0.5-22.0 μM (LOD of 0.27 μM) for S- and R-Man, respectively, along with an enhanced sensitivity toward S-isomer (about 5.7-fold higher than R-isomer) were attained. High selectivity for the determination of mandelic acid was achieved compared to metal ions, amino acids, and sugars that commonly coexist with it. Intra-day as well as inter-day assays, respectively, showed RSD values of about 3.2 and 3.9%. The mechanistic studies were performed for proving the enantioselective behavior of the developed nanoprobe. The method was then used for S-/R-mandelic acid determination in bio-samples. The figures of merit for the method were found to be better than those already reported for enantioselective detection of R-/S-Man.

Photocatalytic degradation of bisphenol A by temperature-sensitive magnetic hydrogel with enhanced service life

Easy diffusion and low reusability limit the practicality of photocatalysts. In this study, a hollow sphere (HS) heterojunction was synthesized based on oxygen-doped carbon nitride (OCN) and layered double hydroxides (LDHs). A thermosensitive HS hydrogel (HS Gel) was prepared by mixing HS with N-isopropylacrylamide. Bisphenol A (BPA), being widely manufactured and used in commercial and domestical products and its high toxicity, was chosen as the target pollutant to demonstrate the photocatalytic ability and practicality of the HS Gel. HS Gel presented effective BPA degradation (95% degradation in 70 mins, 4.2 × 10-2 min-1 of kobs) at ambient temperature which is much better than kobs = 1.8 × 10-2 min-1 of OCN and kobs = 0.08 × 10-2 min-1 of LDH), and increased by two-fold the recycling service life (retention of >80% degradation efficiency after 13 usage cycles) compared to other carbon-based photocatalysts (retention of >80% degradation efficiency after 5-6 usage cycles). This is due to its multifunctional characteristics (magnetic property and thermal sensitivity). Under ambient temperature, the hydrophilic HS Gel swelled in the aqueous solution, which promoted the photocatalytic reaction between HS and BPA in the gel state. After the reaction, the HS Gel was subjected to shrinkage by high temperature heating to enhance the mechanical strength for recovery. The magnetic recovery was realized by the paramagnetic properties of layered double oxide to reduce environmental interference. Detailed studies of HS gel related to enhanced service life were conducted including structural changes, catalyst leaking and magnetic changing. A new kind of type Ӏ plus Z-scheme mechanism was also proposed based on the Kubelka-Munk equation, UV diffuse reflectance spectroscopy and Mott-Schotty technique.

Recent advancements in zero- to three-dimensional carbon networks with a two-dimensional electrode material for high-performance supercapacitors

Supercapacitors have gained significant attention owing to their exceptional performance in terms of energy density and power density, making them suitable for various applications, such as mobile devices, electric vehicles, and renewable energy storage systems. This review focuses on recent advancements in the utilization of 0-dimensional to 3-dimensional carbon network materials as electrode materials for high-performance supercapacitor devices. This study aims to provide a comprehensive evaluation of the potential of carbon-based materials in enhancing the electrochemical performance of supercapacitors. The combination of these materials with other cutting-edge materials, such as Transition Metal Dichalcogenides (TMDs), MXenes, Layered Double Hydroxides (LDHs), graphitic carbon nitride (g-C₃N₄), Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs), Black Phosphorus (BP), and perovskite nanoarchitectures, has been extensively studied to achieve a wide operating potential window. The combination of these materials synchronizes their different charge-storage mechanisms to attain practical and realistic applications. The findings of this review indicate that hybrid composite electrodes with 3D structures exhibit the best potential in terms of overall electrochemical performance. However, this field faces several challenges and promising research directions. This study aimed to highlight these challenges and provide insights into the potential of carbon-based materials in supercapacitor applications.

Green bioanalysis: an innovative and eco-friendly approach for analyzing drugs in biological matrices

Green bioanalytical techniques aim to reduce or eliminate the hazardous waste produced by bioanalytical technologies. A well-organized and practical approach towards bioanalytical method development has an enormous contribution to the green analysis. The selection of the appropriate sample extraction process, organic mobile phase components and separation technique makes the bioanalytical method green. UHPLC-MS is the best option, whereas supercritical fluid chromatography is one of the most effective green bioanalytical procedures. Nevertheless, there remains excellent scope for further research on green bioanalytical methods. This review details the various sample preparation techniques that follow green analytical chemistry principles. Furthermore, it presents green solvents as a replacement for conventional organic solvents and highlights the strategies to convert modern analytical techniques to green methods.

An alternative analytical strategy based on QuEChERS and dissolvable layered double hydroxide dispersive micro-solid phase extraction for trace determination of sulfonylurea herbicides in wolfberry by LC-MS/MS

In this work, a combination of QuEChERS and dispersive micro-solid phase extraction (D-μ-SPE) based on dissolvable layered double hydroxide (LDH) has been established for preconcentration and enrichment of sulfonylurea herbicides (SUHs) in wolfberry samples. The QuEChERS was used for extraction and purification of SUHs, followed by D-μ-SPE for further enrichment of targeted analytes to obtain superior extraction performance. Dissolvable LDH nanosheets were used as absorbents, thus eliminating the elution step needed in traditional D-μ-SPE. The main influence experimental variables including pH of sample solution, amount of LDH, vortex time and volume of acidic solution were optimized in detail. Under the optimized conditions, the proposed method shows high precision (RSDs < 12.7%), low limits of detection (0.01-0.5 ng/g) and limits of quantitation (0.1-2.0 ng/g), acceptable recovery (80.1%-97.1%), thus making it a good alternative analytical strategy for the determination of SUHs residues at the low nanogram per gram range with desirable sensitivity.

Polyoxometalate-based materials in extraction, and electrochemical and optical detection methods: A review

Polyoxometalates (POMs) as metal-oxide anions have exceptional properties like high negative charges, remarkable redox abilities, unique ligand properties and availability of organic grafting. Moreover, the amenability of POMs to modification with different materials makes them suitable as precursors to further obtain new composites. Due to their unique attributes, POMs and their composites have been utilized as adsorbents, electrodes and catalysts in extraction, and electrochemical and optical detection methods, respectively. A survey of the recent progress and developments of POM-based materials in these methods is therefore desirable, and should be of great interest. In this review article, POM-based materials, their properties as well as their identification methods, and analytical applications as adsorbents, electrodes and catalysts, and corresponding mechanisms of action, where relevant, are reviewed. Some current issues of the utilization of these materials and their future prospects in analytical chemistry are discussed.

Magnetic layered double hydroxide/zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 nanocomposite as a novel adsorbent for enrichment of four endocrine disrupting compounds in milk samples

For the first time, a novel nanocomposite, zeolitic imidazolate framework/magnetic layered double hydroxide (Fe₃O₄@LDH/ZIF), was successfully fabricated through in situ synthetic method with Fe₃O₄ as magnetic core and composite as shell. The resulting materials were characterized by XRD, TEM, FT-IR, VSM, TGA and nitrogen adsorption-desorption analysis. The Fe₃O₄@LDH/ZIF was employed as a sorbent in dispersive micro-solid phase extraction (D-μ-SPE) for enrichment of four endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs) from milk samples prior to ultra-high performance liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS) analysis. The synthesized nanocomposite showed bigger specific surface area and better absorption capacity than Fe₃O₄@LDH. The equilibrium adsorption capacities (Qe, mg/g) of EDCs on the Fe₃O₄@LDH/ZIF reached up to 47.4-138.8 mg/g, mainly resulting from hydrogen bonding, π-π interaction and electrostatic interaction between EDCs and nanocomposite. Several variables affecting the extraction efficiency were investigated and optimized. The method displays low limits of detection (3-15 ng L^-1), good linearity (10-5000 ng L^-1), acceptable precision (RSD < 7.8%) and accuracy (RE < 5.2%). Satisfactory repeatability was obtained with RSD in the range of 1.2-7.8%. This work provides a promising approach for the development of new sorbent media in sample preparation for the improvement of analytical performance.

Co-precipitation based on layered double hydroxides and anionic surfactants for preconcentration of six benzoylurea insecticides in soft drinks before simultaneous analysis by high-performance liquid chromatography

Layered-double hydroxides (LDHs) modified with anionic surfactants via a co-precipitation method were developed for preconcentrating and simultaneous analysis of six benzoylurea insecticides (BUs) by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The anionic surfactants with different chain lengths, including sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate (SDBS), sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), sodium 1-nonane sulfonate (SNS), and sodium 1-hexane sulfonate monohydrate (SHS) were investigated to improve the extraction efficiency of LDHs. The SDBS-LDHs provided the highest efficiency for the enrichment of the BUs studied. Under the chosen conditions, enrichment factors in the range of 38-69 and detection limits in the range of 0.1-0.3 μg L^-1 were achieved. Good reproducibilities (RSD < 13.8%) and recoveries (71.4-118.7%) were also obtained. The proposed preconcentration method, used as an in situ procedure offers rapid and simple simultaneous preparation of LDHs and extraction of BUs. The method was successfully applied for residue analysis of BUs in fruit- and flower-derived soft drink samples.

Recent Advances in Layered Double Hydroxide-Based Electrochemical and Optical Sensors

Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) have attracted considerable attention as promising materials for electrochemical and optical sensors owing to their excellent catalytic properties, facile synthesis strategies, highly tunable morphology, and versatile hosting ability. LDH-based electrochemical sensors are affordable alternatives to traditional precious-metal-based sensors, as LDHs can be synthesized from abundant inorganic precursors. LDH-modified probes can directly catalyze or host catalytic compounds that facilitate analyte redox reactions, detected as changes in the probe's current, voltage, or resistance. The porous and lamellar structure of LDHs allows rapid analyte diffusion and abundant active sites for enhanced sensor sensitivity. LDHs can be composed of conductive materials such as reduced graphene oxide (rGO) or metal nanoparticles for improved catalytic activity and analyte selectivity. As optical sensors, LDHs provide a spacious, stable structure for synergistic guest-host interactions. LDHs can immobilize fluorophores, chemiluminescence reactants, and other spectroscopically active materials to reduce the aggregation and dissolution of the embedded sensor molecules, yielding enhanced optical responses and increased probe reusability. This review discusses standard LDH synthesis methods and overviews the different electrochemical and optical analysis techniques. Furthermore, the designs and modifications of exemplary LDHs and LDH composite materials are analyzed, focusing on the analytical performance of LDH-based sensors for key biomarkers and pollutants, including glucose, dopamine (DA), H2O2, metal ions, nitrogen-based toxins, and other organic compounds.

Fe3O4-FeMoS4: Promise magnetite LDH-based adsorbent for simultaneous removal of Pb (II), Cd (II), and Cu (II) heavy metal ions

There have always been numerous challenges to designing a cost-effectiveness, reusable and robust adsorbents for simultaneous heavy metal ion remediations from wastewaters. Herein, a novel kind of nanocomposite relying on the synergic impact of magnetic Fe₃O₄, FeMoS₄^-2, and magnesium-aluminum layered double hydroxide (MgAl-LDH) using loading the FeMoS₄^-2 on protonated Fe₃O₄ and adhered to the surface of Mg/Al-LDH (Fe₃O₄/FeMoS₄/MgAl-LDH). The nanocage structures adsorbent was characterized via FT-IR, XRD, FE-SEM, EDX, and VSM techniques and demonstrated having an efficient adsorption capability to common cationic pollutants (Pb (II), Cd (II) and Cu (II) by batch experiments. Disparate chief parameters affecting adsorption performance, including Fe₃O₄/FeMoS₄/MgAl-LDH mass, metal ion concentrations, solution pH, and contact time were considered and optimized through central composite design (CCD) in detail. Its supreme adsorption efficiency toward Pb (II), Cd (II), and Cu (II) accounted for 190.75, 140.50, and 110.25 mg g^-1, respectively, which acquired by the Langmuir model under the parameter set at 60 min contact time, solution pH at 5, 0.03 g the Fe₃O₄/FeMoS₄/MgAl-LDH and metal ion concentrations ranging from 10 to 300 mg L^-1. Such enhancement stemmed from the coordinated complexes in the LDH interlayer region and electrostatic attraction between Fe₃O₄/FeMoS₄/MgAl-LDH and metal ions. Furthermore, the adsorption conducts were more consistent with the pseudo-second-order model and the Langmuir isotherm model, respectively. Likewise, the features such as the superior regeneration and reusability allow the Fe₃O₄/FeMoS₄/MgAl-LDH nanocomposite to constitute as one of the promising materials for heavy metals remediation in wastewater.

Determination of seven tetracyclines in milk by dissolvable layered double hydroxide-based solid-phase extraction coupled with high-performance liquid chromatography

A dissolvable layered double hydroxide-based solid-phase extraction combined with high-performance liquid chromatography was developed for the analysis of minocycline, oxytetracycline, tetracycline, demeclocycline, metacycline, chlortetracycline and doxycycline in milk samples. In situ formation of the layered double hydroxide was achieved by the addition of MgCl₂-AlCl₃ solution to alkaline deproteinized milk. The analytes were efficiently extracted by the Mg/Al layered double hydroxide. After centrifugation, the co-precipitates were dissolved in 0.1 mol L^-1 Na₂EDTA-McIlvaine buffer prior to HPLC analysis. Under optimized conditions, the method achieved low detection limits of 0.414-0.986 μg L^-1 and quantification limits of 1.38-3.29 μg L^-1, and good recoveries of 93.5-100% with intra- and inter-day RSDs of 0.498-4.08% and 1.23-10.0%, respectively. This method is convenient, accurate, sensitive, rapid, cost-effective, eco-friendly, and suitable for the determination of seven tetracycline antibiotics in milk samples.

Phase transition of Mg/Al-flocs to Mg/Al-layered double hydroxides during flocculation and polystyrene nanoplastics removal

Nanoplastics, a kind of emerging pollutant in natural environments, have now drawn tremendous attention worldwide. Flocculation with Mg/Al-layered double hydroxides (LDH) precursor solutions has showed great potential for removing negatively charged nanoparticles from water. In this study, the flocculation behavior and mechanism for the removal of polystyrene nanoplastics (PSNP) with Mg/Al flocs or Mg/Al LDH were systematically analyzed and investigated. During the process of flocculation, it was observed that in situ Mg/Al LDH can be gradually formed with increasing pH, in addition, PSNP were captured or attached to the surface of LDH with a turning point around pH of 5.0. In acidic solutions with pH < 5.0, the negative surface charges of PSNP were diminished mainly due to the high concentrations of hydrogen ions and the positive charges from Mg and Al ions. In a moderately alkaline solution, Mg and Al ions gradually formed crystals capturing PSNP. Electrostatic adsorption and intermolecular force are the main mechanisms via which PSNP are captured on Mg/Al flocs. Herein, PSNP removal efficiencies from water were more than 90.0%. As the problem of plastic pollution becomes more severe, in situ LDH growth flocculation can provide an efficient way for the removal of PSNP.

Extraction and electrochemical sensing of pesticides in food and environmental samples by use of polydopamine-based materials

Polydopamine has high adsorption capacities for pollutants such as pesticides in food and environmental matrices. Consequently, it has found applications in some sorbent-based micro-extraction techniques such as solid phase micro-extraction and magnetic solid phase extraction. This paper gives a detailed review of the application of polydopamine-based adsorbents for the extraction of pesticides in food and environmental matrices using these techniques. The adhesive properties of polydopamine have made it to be a suitable material for the immobilisation of the components of electrochemical sensors used to detect pesticides in food and environmental matrices. This paper also gives a comprehensive review on the application of polydopamine in electrochemical sensors such as acetylcholinesterase sensors, molecularly imprinted sensors and aptasensors. The use of polydopamine-based adsorbents during the extraction and electrochemical sensing of pesticides in food and environmental matrices is not free of challenges. In this review, the challenges encountered during the use of polydopamine-based adsorbents are also discussed.

Dissolvable Mg/Al layered double hydroxides and surfactant as an extractant for trace analysis of benzoylurea insecticides by high performance liquid chromatography

A rapid and simple preconcentration method using dissolvable Mg/Al layered-double hydroxides (LDHs) and high performance liquid chromatography-photodiode array detection (HPLC-PDA) was developed for the analysis of benzoylurea insecticides (BUs) in water and honey samples. The proposed dissolvable LDHs for the extraction can be prepared in one step by the sequential addition of sodium hydroxide, magnesium chloride, aluminium chloride, and sodium dodecyl sulfate into the sample solution containing the target BUs. The co-precipitate phase was simply obtained after centrifugation, and the phase was then dissolved with formic acid before analysis by HPLC. The developed method provided an enrichment factor of 12.5-23.7. LODs were obtained in the range of 0.1-0.3 μg L^-1 for deionized water, 0.2-2.0 μg L^-1 for environmental waters, and 0.5-2.0 μg L^-1 for the analyzed honey samples. Good recoveries ranging from 78.4 to 117.8% and 72.7 to 117.9% for water and honey samples, respectively, were obtained.

Electrochemically synthesized NiFe layered double hydroxide modified Cu(OH)2 needle-shaped nanoarrays: A novel sorbent for thin-film solid phase microextraction of antifungal drugs

Herein, we applied a simple electrosynthesis process to deposit nickel-iron layered double hydroxides (NiFe LDH) on the surface of copper hydroxide (Cu(OH)₂) needle-shaped nanoarrays and introduce a new sorbent for thin-film solid phase microextraction (TF-SPME). For this purpose, the nanoarrays were grown via electrochemical anodization on a copper foil's surface and then modified with NiFe LDH. The synthesized sorbent was characterized by field emission-scanning electron microscopy, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), and Barrett-Joiner-Halenda (BJH) analysis, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction. The Cu(OH)₂-NiFe LDH based TF-SPME method was used to measure antifungal drugs in veterinary plasma samples followed by HPLC-UV analysis. The effects of various parameters in the extraction efficiency, including pH (5.0), extraction time (20 min), stirring rate (500 rpm), and salt effect (5.0%), type of eluent (acetonitrile), eluent volume (100 μL) and desorption time (5 min) were thoroughly optimized. Under the optimum conditions, limits of detection for ketoconazole, clotrimazole, and miconazole were obtained below 10 ng mL^-1. Intra-day, inter-day and film-to-film RSDs% were obtained less than 6.2%, 7.3% and 7.0%, respectively. Moreover, calibration plots were linear from 30 to 5000 ng mL^-1 for ketoconazole, 8.0-1000 ng mL^-1 for clotrimazole, and 15-1000 ng mL^-1 for miconazole, with determination coefficients between 0.9937 and 0.9971. Finally, good relative recoveries (%) in the range of 85-97% were obtained for measuring trace amounts of antifungal drugs in dogs' plasma samples. As a result, the method can be considered as an appropriate alternative to the conventional sample preparation methods for measuring trace amounts of antifungal drugs in biological samples.

Surface area expansion by flower-like nanoscale layered double hydroxides for high efficient stir bar sorptive extraction

Enhancing the surface area of stationary phase is essential in chromatographic science. In this work, nanoscale NiAl-layered double hydroxides (NiAl-LDHs) with flower-like structure was used as a platform for supporting the stationary phase. Then strong hydrophobic p-naphtholbenzein molecule was immobilized onto the LDHs layer as sorbent for stir bar sorptive extraction (SBSE). The flower-like LDHs layer significantly increased the extraction efficiency through increasing the specific surface area and immobilized amounts of stationary phase. In addition, the LDHs can also provide anion exchange ability, which expanded the application of this stir bar for analysis of not only hydrophobic but also anionic analytes. For improving the workability, a poly(ether ether ketone) (PEEK) jacket stir bar with detachable dumbbell-shaped structure was employed. The PEEK jacket with high mechanical strength and dumbbell-shaped structure improved the durability of stir bar and the detectable design allowed elution to be realized with less solvent that enhanced the enrichment factor. The proposed stir bar showed good performance for the extraction of multiple analytes including flavonoids, non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs and chlorophenoxy acids. By coupling with high performance liquid chromatography-ultraviolet detection (HPLC-UV), the SBSE-HPLC-UV method was applied for the extraction of three active components including bavachin, isobavachalcone and bavachinin in Psoralea corylifolia L. herb with low limit detection of 0.01-0.02 ng/mL.

Layered double hydroxide/poly(vinylpyrrolidone) coated solid phase microextraction Arrow for the determination of volatile organic compounds in water

Today, wide variety of adsorbents have been developed for sample pretreatment to concentrate and separate harmful substances. However, only a few solid phase microextraction Arrow adsorbents are commercially available. In this study, we developed a new solid phase microextraction Arrow coating, in which nanosheets layered double hydroxides and poly(vinylpyrrolidone) were utilized as the extraction phase and poly(vinyl chloride) as the adhesive. This new coating entailed higher extraction capacity for several volatile organic compounds (allyl methyl sulfide, methyl propyl sulfide, 3-pentanone, 2-butanone, and methyl isobutyl ketone) compared to the commercial Carboxen 1000/polydimethylsiloxane coating. Fabrication parameters for the coating were optimized and extraction and desorption conditions were investigated. The validation of the new solid phase microextraction Arrow coating was accomplished using water sample spiked with volatile organic compounds. Under the optimal conditions, the limits of quantification for the five volatile organic compounds by the new solid phase microextraction Arrow coating and developed gas chromatography with mass spectrometry method were in the range of 0.2-4.6 ng/mL. The proposed method was briefly applied for enrichment of volatile organic compounds in sludge.

Recent advances in the application of layered double hydroxides in analytical chemistry: A review

In recent years, layered double hydroxides (LDHs) have garnered a lot of attention in analytical chemistry, due to their advantages such as relatively simple synthesis, low cost, possession of large specific surface area and high catalytic activity, and biocompatibility. The most common applications of LDH in analytical chemistry such as sorbents in sample extraction, electrode materials in electrochemical sensing and color indicators in colorimetric detection have been well reported. Generally, the LDHs are prepared as composites with nanomaterials, or constructed with specific three-dimensional structures, befitting the applications desired for them. However, the applications of LDHs (as extraction sorbents, color indicators and in electrochemical sensing) are usually limited in these scenarios. To help address these challenges, future trends and developmental prospects of LDHs materials in analytical chemistry are discussed in this article. Besides, the strategies associated with the design of LDHs, including the structural aspects, for potential analytical applications are presented and reviewed.

Materials for Solid-Phase Extraction of Organic Compounds

This review provides an overview of the most recent developments involving materials for solid-phase extraction applied to determine organic contaminants. It mainly concerns polymer-based sorbents that include high-capacity, as well as selective sorbents, inorganic-based sorbents that include those prepared using sol-gel technology along with structured porous materials based on inorganic species, and carbon nanomaterials, such as graphene and carbon nanotubes. Different types of magnetic nanoparticles coated with these materials are also reviewed. Such materials, together with their main morphological and chemical features, are described, as are some representative examples of their application as solid-phase extraction materials to extract organic compounds from different types of samples, including environmental water, biological fluids, and food.
