Abstract
The objectives of this work were to develop and extend the previously proposed approaches to control the structure of nanoscale planar systems based on modular fluorophore compounds capable of efficient analyte binding and to optimize the architecture of ultrathin films formed from them to create a thin-film sensor element for mercury cations. The possibility of applying the ratiometric approach to the fluorescence measurements to obtain a quantitative analytical signal was shown. It was found that films with the Langmuir-Schaefer film architecture, in which the receptor crown ether groups of the fluoroionophore are oriented toward the studied solution, allow the quantitative determination of mercury cations in water at concentrations below the threshold limit value and are especially effective in the analyte concentration range of 10-10-10-5 M. High selectivity of the obtained thin-film sensitive elements with respect to mercury cations and the possibility of regeneration of such elements after quantitative determination of mercury cations in aqueous solutions are demonstrated.

Abstract
Recently, an anthraquinone-supported thiourea group linking a 1-aza-18-crown-6 macrocycle L has been the subject of extensive attention due to the perfect affinity towards metal cations. This work systematically researched the effects of different metal cations ([Formula: see text], [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text]) on the second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of macrocycle L by density functional theory (DFT). DFT calculations revealed that the values of first hyperpolarizabilities ([Formula: see text] decrease significantly when alkaline earth metal cations ([Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text]) were injected into macrocycle L due to the smaller charge transfer (CT) transition and larger transition energy. Conversely, the variations of [Formula: see text] values in alkali metal cations ([Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] and transition metal cations ([Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text]) derivatives are not obvious compared to the [Formula: see text] value of macrocycle L. Therefore, the NLO properties of macrocycle can be effectively regulated by alkaline earth metal cations. Furthermore, we found that the [Formula: see text] value of anion-controlled complex Na(L)(ClO4) is larger than that of L*Na+ complex because the anion [Formula: see text] improves the planarity of anthraquinone-supported thiourea group leading to the enhancement of the CT ability. In addition, the influence of frequency-dependent on the first hyperpolarizabilities is weak for the current systems. Hence, we look forward to the conception of this work will offer a fundamental guideline and reference for further research for novel NLO materials.

Abstract
The present review is mainly focused on the overview of carrier mediated extraction (principles and applications) being reported over the last two decades and discusses the extraction process through carriers in various extraction methods such as Bulk liquid membranes, supported liquid membranes, emulsion liquid membranes and polymer inclusion membranes. Several types of carriers such as neutral, anionic, cationic, macrocyclic and supramulecular carriers are discussed. Also their application for metal, anions, drugs and environmental compounds are investigated. Carriers have been demonstrated to be useful for the selective extraction and recovery of numerous cations and anions enhancing the extraction properties of traditional solvent extraction and ion-exchange processes. Several types of carriers have different transport mechanisms. In these mechanisms, transport configurations are addressed and emphasized and the detailed information on the type of carrier are presented along with their specific separation modes. The performance of different carriers in terms of selectivity as well as efficiency are also discussed. Finally, the application of different carriers for the extraction of various compounds are compared and reviewed. To our best knowledge no reviews have been published on carrier-mediated extraction methods.

Abstract
This study takes a novel approach to the enhancement of receptor properties of thin-film sensors based on hemicyanine dyes with dithia-aza-crown-ionophoric moiety. By means of in situ UV-vis and X-ray reflectivity (XRR) measurements, it was revealed that the introduction of up to 0.25 mmol of Hg2+ under a preliminarily compressed monolayer, formed on pure water, does not lead to cation binding. This is due to the formation of "head-to-tail" aggregates (H-type), in which ionophoric group is blocked by the neighboring molecule. However, the presence of barium cations in the subphase under the forming Langmuir monolayer of the mentioned compound causes codirectional (head-to-head) orientation of chromoionophore fragments. This provides preorganization of a monolayer structure that facilitates the binding of complementary mercury cations, even in a compressed state: asymmetric sandwich complexes containing two dye molecules coordinate a Hg2+ cation between them. This complex structure was confirmed by molecular modeling based on the electron density distribution calculated from XRR measurement data. Such preorganization of supramolecular ensembles induced by cations, which do not participate in the complex formation with macroheterocyclic receptors, may have applications in fields where strict control of molecular orientation at the interface is required, such as nanoelectronics, sensorics, catalysis, etc.

Abstract
The two ionophores N'(N',N‴E,N',N‴E)-N',N‴-((((oxybis(ethane-2,1-diyl))bis(oxy)) bis(2,1-phenylene))bis(methanylylidene))di(isonicotinohydrazide) (I1) and (N',N‴E,N',N‴E)-N',N‴-(((propane-1,3-diylbis(oxy))bis(2,1-phenylene))bis(methanylylidene))di(isonicotinohydrazide) (I2) were synthesised and investigated as neutral carrier in the fabrication of Mn(2+) ion selective sensor. Several membranes were prepared by incorporating different plasticizers and anionic excluders and their effect on potentiometric response was studied. The best analytical performance was obtained with the electrode having a membrane of composition of I2: PVC: o-NPOE: NaTPB in the ratio of 6:34:58:2 (w/w, mg). Comparative studies of coated graphite electrode (CGE) and coated pyrolytic graphite electrode (CPGE) based on I2 reveal the superiority of CPGE. The CPGE exhibits wide working concentration range of 1.23×10(-8)-1.0×10(-1) mol L(-1) and a detection limit down to 4.78×10(-9) mol L(-1) with a Nernstian slope of 29.5±0.4 mV decade(-1) of activity. The sensor performs satisfactorily over a wide pH range (3.5-9.0) and exhibited a quick response time (9s). The sensor can work satisfactorily in water-acetonitrile and water-methanol mixtures. It can tolerate 30% acetonitrile and 20% methanol content in the mixtures. The sensor could be used for a period of four months without any significant divergence in performance. The sensor reflects its utility in the quantification of Mn(2+) ion in real samples and has been successfully employed as an indicator electrode in the potentiometric titration of Mn(2+) ion with ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA).

Abstract
The syntheses of novel adamantane thialactones 5-12 are reported, and the results of the heavy- and transition-metal cation extraction experiments are described. The results are compared with those obtained with similar thiamacrocyclic ligands that have flexible chains of methylene groups incorporated into the macrocyclic framework as in 13-20. The results show that most of the hosts studied are very good in complexing the Ag(+) ion. The formation of complexes has also been demonstrated using NMR titration experiments for macrocycles 13 and 14 with AgTFA. Introduction of a single polycyclic molecule into the 15- to 18-membered rings increases the rigidity and preorganizes the ligand for complexation. However, two adamantane molecules embedded in the ring usually diminish the complexing ability of the ligand, primarily due to sterical effects of the bulky adamantane moiety that obstructs formation of an optimal geometry for binding the desired metal ion. The structures of macrocycles 5, 7, 9, 11, and 19 were determined by X-ray structure analysis, and their conformational properties are discussed. In the solid state, 7, 11, and 19 are organized into tubular fashion using C-H...O interactions. Also, two silver complexes with thialactone 13, Ag13 and Ag(13)(2), were prepared and characterized. The structure analysis of Ag13 and Ag(13)(2) reveals the formation of mononuclear and binuclear species with silver in ambivalent, tetrahedral coordination via sulfur and oxygen from trifluoroacetate anion.

Abstract
Two new mixed aza-thia crowns 5-aza-2,8-dithia[9]-(2,9)-1,10-phenanthrolinophane (L(4)) and 2,8-diaza-5-thia[9]-(2,9)-1,10-phenanthrolinophane (L(7)) have been synthesized and characterized. The coordination behavior of L(4) and L(7) toward the metal ions Cu(II), Zn(II), Pb(II), Cd(II), Hg(II), and Ag(I) was studied in aqueous solution by potentiometric methods, in CD3CN/D2O 4:1 (v/v) by (1)H NMR titrations and in the solid state. The data obtained were compared with those available for the coordination behavior toward the same metal ions of structurally analogous mixed donor macrocyclic ligands L(1)-L(3), L(5), L(6): all these contain a phenanthroline subunit but have only S/O/N(aromatic) donor groups in the remaining portion of the ring and are, therefore, less water-soluble than L(4) and L(7). The complexes [Cd(NO3)2(L(5))], [Pb(L(7))](ClO4)2 x 1/2MeCN, [Pb(L(4))](ClO4)2 x MeCN, and [Cu(L(7))](ClO4)2 x 3/2MeNO2 were characterized by X-ray crystallography. The efficacy of L(1)-L(7) in competitive liquid-liquid metal ion extraction of Cu(II), Zn(II), Cd(II), Pb(II), Ag(I), and Hg(II) was assessed. In the absence of Hg(II), a clear extraction selectivity for Ag(I) was observed in all systems investigated.

Abstract
Plasticized membranes using 3-(2-pyridinyl)-2H-pyrido[1,2,-a]-1,3,5-triazine-2,4(3H)-dithione (L1) and acetoacetanilide (L2) have been prepared and explored as Cu2+-selective sensors. Effect of various plasticizers, viz. chloronaphthalene (CN), benzyl acetate (BA), o-nitrophenyloctyl ether (o-NPOE), and anion excluders, sodium tetraphenylborate (NaTPB) and oleic acid (OA) was studied in detail and improved performance was observed at several instances. Optimum performance was observed with dithione derivative (L1) having a membrane composition of L1 (5):PVC (120):o-NPOE (240):OA (10). The sensor works satisfactorily in the concentration range 5.0 x 10(-8) to 1.0 x 10(-2) M (detection limit 4.0 x 10(-8) M) with a Nernstian slope of 29.5 mV decade(-1) of activity. Wide pH range (3.0-9.5), fast response time (12s), non-aqueous tolerance (up to 20%) and adequate shelf life (4 months) indicate the vital utility of the proposed sensor. The potentiometric selectivity coefficient values as determined by match potential method (MPM) indicate good response for Cu2+ in presence of interfering ions. The proposed electrode comparatively shows good selectivity with respect to alkali, alkaline earth, transition and some rare earth metals ions. The electrode was used for the determination of copper in different milk powder, water samples and as indicator electrode in potentiometric titration of copper ion with EDTA.

Abstract
[structure: see text] The jewel pendant ligand has multiple chromogenic units combined in a single molecule with the dyes linked to a semiselective binding site by three heteroatoms (O, N, S) having different HSAB characteristics, to indicate diverse response to individual transition metal ions. Using a single-molecular multianalyte sensor, multiple analytes could be determined with a minimal sensing system.

Abstract
To examine the directivity for improving the silver ion discrimination ability of a Schiff base, three kinds of tridentate ligands were synthesized and compared with the similar quadridentate ligand as the silver ionophore. Among the Schiff base derivatives tested, 3-(2-pyridylethylimino)-2-butanoneoxime, having one oxime and a pyridine substituent, was found to be the best ionophore for a silver-ion electrode. The electrode based on this derivative exhibited good silver-ion selectivity, -log Kpot(Ag+,K+) = 3.8, comparable to that of a quadridentate Schiff base, N,N'-bis(2'-hydroxyimino-1'-phenylpropyleden)-1,3-propanediamine, reported previously, except for a pseudo Nernstian response (35.6 mV decade(-1)) with a wide silver-ion activity change in the activity change from 5.0 x 10(-7) to 7.9 x 10(-2) mol dm(-3).

Abstract
A novel membrane coated platinum-wire electrode (MCPWE) based on N,N'-bis(2-thienylmethylene)-1,2-diaminobenzene (BTMD) for highly selective determination of Ag+ ion has been developed. The influences of membrane composition and pH on the potentiometric responses of electrode were investigated. The potentiometric responses are independent of the pH of the test solution in the range of 5.0 - 9.0. The electrode shows a linear response for Ag+ ion over the concentration range of 1.0 x 10(-60 to 1.0 x 10(-1) M with a lower detection limit of 6.0 x 10(-7) M. The electrode possesses a Nernstian slope of 59.7 mV decade(-1) and a fast response time of < or = 17 s and can be used for at least 2 months without any observable deviation. The proposed electrode displayed very good selectivity for Ag+ ion with respect to NH4+ and alkali, alkaline earth and some common transition metal ions. The practical utility of the electrode has been demonstrated by its use as the indicator electrode in the potentiometric titration of an AgNO3 solution with a NaI solution and in determination of the silver content of a developed radiological film.

Abstract
A new wire-coated silver ion-selective electrode with a wider concentration range (10(-7) M - 10(-1) M) was developed using 2-mercaptobenzothiazole (MBT) as a neutral ionophore. An optimum mixture of PVC, ionophore, dioctylphtalate (DOP) as a plasticizer and sodium tetraphenylborate (NaTPB) as an ion-pairing agent was used in preparing the coatings. The effect of various parameters, such as the electrode bed nature, coating composition and solution pH, on the efficiency of the electrode is described. It has been shown that platinum acts as a more suitable bed for electrode preparation, and exhibits a slope of 59.5 +/- 1 mV over the whole range of studied concentrations. The selectivity coefficient of the electrode towards various interfering cations as well as its reproducibility, response time and lifetime of the electrode were estimated. The developed electrode was successfully used for the determination of trace amounts of silver in human hair and photographic waste as real samples and in the potentiometric titration of halides as an indicator electrode.
