Electrochemistry of Multilayer Electrodes: From the Basics to Energy Applications

Efficient electrochemical generation of active chlorine to mediate urea and ammonia oxidation in a hierarchically porous-Ru/RuO2-based flow reactor

The electrochemical chlorination of urea to CO₂ and N₂ end-products, via active-chlorine-mediated oxidation under nearly neutral conditions, is an effective treatment for medium-concentrated urea-containing wastewater. Herein, we design a novel flow reactor integrated with three-dimensional hierarchically porous Ru/RuO₂ architectures anchored on a Ti mesh. The hierarchically macroporous electrode can create sufficient exposure of catalytically active sites and facilitate the microscopic mass transport and diffusion inside the active layer, thereby contributing to the increased removal efficiency of urea-N and ammonia-N. The combined results of electrochemical measurements, UV-visible spectrometry and in situ Raman spectrometry, show that the OCl^- species produced by chlorine evolution reaction (CER) are the main active constituents for removing urea-N. Theoretical calculations reveal thLTWAat the Ru/RuO₂ possesses a moderate Cl binding strength, lower theoretical overpotentials of CER and a higher conductivity, compared with pure RuO₂. On this basis, we assemble a circular flow reactor with the hierarchically porous electrodes in a two-electrode system to obtain an enhanced microfluidic process, which during 9 days of uninterrupted operation, at a high electrolysis current of 500 mA, achieve a total nitrogen removal of 92.6% and an energy consumption of 7.94 kWh kg^-1 N, demonstrating the promising application of the novel process.

Layer-by-Layer Construction of a Nanoarchitecture by Polyoxometalates and Polymers: Enhanced Electrochemical Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

In this contribution, a nanoarchitectural approach was employed to produce a nanolayer of polyoxometalate (POM) on the surface of a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) to achieve a higher surface area with higher electrocatalytic activity toward the electrochemical hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). To accomplish this, the well-known layer-by-layer (LbL) technique was employed, which involved the alternate adsorption of the POM, Na_0.3[N(C₄H₉)₄]_7.7 [(Mo₃O₈)₄(O₃PC(O)(C₃H₆NH₂CH₂C₄H₃S)PO₃)₄], abbreviated as [(TBA)Mo₁₂(AleThio)₄], and polyethyleneimine (PEI) polymer. This nanolayered electrode exhibited catalytic properties toward the HER in 0.5 M H₂SO₄ with the resulting polarization curves indicating an increase in the HER activity with the increasing number of POM layers, and the overpotential required for this reaction was lowered by 0.83 V when compared with a bare GCE. The eighth PEI/[(TBA)Mo₁₂(AleThio)₄] bilayer exhibited a significantly lower HER overpotential of -0.077 V at a current density of 10 mA cm^-2. Surface characterization of the LbL-assembled nanolayers was carried out using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. We believe that the synergetic effect of the positively charged PEI polymer and the catalytically active molybdate POM is the cause for the successful response to the electrochemical HER.

Scalable Dry-Pressed Electrodes Based on Holey Graphene

ConspectusHoley graphene (hG) is a structural derivative of graphene with arrays of through-thickness holes of a few to tens of nanometers in diameter, randomly distributed across the nanosheet surfaces. In most bulk preparation methods, the holes on hG sheets are preferentially generated from the pre-existing defects on graphene. Therefore, contrary to intuitive belief, hG is not necessarily more defective than the intact graphene. Instead, it retains essential parent properties, including high electrical conductivity, high surface area, mechanical robustness, and chemical inertness. Furthermore, the added holey structural motif imparts unique properties that are not present in unmodified graphene, making hG advantageous in numerous applications such as sensing, membranes, reinforcements, and electrochemical energy storage. In particular, the presence of holes enhances the mass transport through the nanosheet plane and thus significantly reduces tortuosity. This difference is a key advantage for using hG in energy storage applications where the transport of ions through the thickness becomes more hindered as the electrode thickness increases to meet practical energy density requirements.An unexpected discovery is that the holes of the hG sheets enable the dry hG powder to be directly compressed into robust monoliths. hG not only can be pressed into monoliths by itself but also can host other electrochemically active materials as a compressible matrix. This important yet unique property, which is not available for other carbon materials including intact graphene, significantly broadens the application horizon in energy storage applications. With the dry compressibility, electrodes with ultrahigh mass loading and thus ultrahigh areal capacity may be conveniently fabricated without toxic solvents or parasitic binders, which are required in conventional slurry-based approaches for electrode fabrication. The dry-press electrode preparation process can be completed within minutes regardless of mass loading. In comparison, high-mass-loading electrodes for advanced battery chemistries using conventional fabrication methods often need stringent and time-consuming process control. hG can also be combined with electrochemically active battery materials while maintaining dry compressibility. This has allowed the unprecedented, convenient manipulation of a wide variety of thick electrode compositions and architectures, which provides not only outstanding performance but also new physical insights for various battery chemistries.In this Account, we first present some basic observations on the dry compressibility of hG as well as the mechanistic investigations from atomistic modeling rationalizing this unique property. We then showcase the applications of neat and composite dry-pressed hG electrodes for various energy storage platforms including supercapacitors, lithium (Li) ion batteries, Li-O₂ batteries, and Li-S/Se batteries. The preparation and performance of thick electrodes with practical mass loadings and unique electrode architecture manipulation, both enabled by the dry compressibility of hG, are highlighted and discussed.

Multilayer Conductive Hybrid Nanosheets as Versatile Hybridization Matrices for Optimizing the Defect Structure, Structural Ordering, and Energy-Functionality of Nanostructured Materials

The hybridization of conductive nanospecies has garnered significant research interest because of its high efficacy in improving the diverse functionalities of nanostructured materials. In this study, a novel synthetic strategy is developed to optimize the defect structure, structural ordering, and energy-related functionality of nanostructured-materials by employing a multilayer multicomponent two-dimenstional (2D) graphene/metal oxide/graphene nanosheet (NS) as a versatile hybridization matrix. The hybridization of the robust trilayer, polydiallyldiammonium (PDDA)-anchored reduced-graphene oxide (prGO)/metal oxide/prGO NS effectively enhance the structural ordering and porosity of the hybridized MoS₂ /MnO₂ NS through suppression of defect formation and tight stacking. In comparison with monolayer rGO/RuO₂ NS-based homologs, the 2D superlattice trilayer prGO/RuO₂ /prGO NS hybrids deliver better functionalities as a hydrogen evolution electrocatalyst and as a supercapacitor electrode, demonstrating the merits of hybridization with multilayer NSs. The advantages of using multilayer multicomponent conductive NSs as hybridization matrices arise from the enhancement of charge and mass transport through the layer flattening or defect suppression of the hybridized NSs and the increase in porosity, as evidenced by density functional theory calculations. Finally, the universal utility of multilayer NSs is confirmed by investigating the strong effect of the stacking order on the electrocatalytic functionality of MoS₂ /rGO/RuO₂ films fabricated through layer-by-layer deposition.

Nanoarchitectonics: what's coming next after nanotechnology?

In science and technology today, the crucial importance of the regulation of nanoscale objects and structures is well recognized. The production of functional material systems using nanoscale units can be achieved via the fusion of nanotechnology with the other research disciplines. This task is a part of the emerging concept of nanoarchitectonics, which is a concept moving beyond the area of nanotechnology. The concept of nanoarchitectonics is supposed to involve the architecting of functional materials using nanoscale units based on the principles of nanotechnology. In this focus article, the essences of nanotechnology and nanoarchitectonics are first explained, together with their historical backgrounds. Then, several examples of material production based on the concept of nanoarchitectonics are introduced via several approaches: (i) from atomic switches to neuromorphic networks; (ii) from atomic nanostructure control to environmental and energy applications; (iii) from interfacial processes to devices; and (iv) from biomolecular assemblies to life science. Finally, perspectives relating to the final goals of the nanoarchitectonics approach are discussed.
