Metal-N-Heterocyclic Carbene Chemistry Directed toward Metallosupramolecular Synthesis and Beyond

A [2.2]Isoindolinophanyl-Based Carbene (iPC) Ligand: Synthesis, Electronic and Photophysical Properties, and Application in Photocatalysis

Cyclic amino(alkyl) and cyclic amino(aryl) carbenes (cAACs/cAArCs) have been established as very useful ligands for catalytic and photonic applications of transition metal complexes. Herein, we describe the synthesis of a structurally related sterically demanding, electrophilic [2.2]isoindolinophanyl-based carbene (iPC) that bears a [2.2]paracyclophane moiety. The latter leads to more delocalized frontier orbitals and intense green fluorescence of (HiPC)OTf (2) from an intra-ligand charge transfer (1ILCT) state in the solid state. Base-promoted synthesis of the free carbene led to an unusual ring expansion and subsequent dimerization reaction, but the beneficial ligand properties can be exploited by trapping in situ at a metal center. The iPC ligand is a very potent π-chromophore, which participates in low energy metal-to-ligand (ML)CT transitions in [RhCl(CO)2(iPC)] (4) and IL-"through-space"-CT transitions in [Au(iPC)2]OTf (5). The steric demand of the iPC leads to high stability of 5 against air, moisture, or solvent attack, and ultralong-lived green phosphorescence with a lifetime of 185 μs is observed in solution. The beneficial photophysical and electronic properties of the iPC ligand, including a large accessible π surface area, were exploited by employing highly efficient energy transfer (EnT) photocatalysis in a [2+2] styrene cycloaddition reaction using 5, which outperformed other established photocatalysts in comparison.

Synthesis of a Metalla[2]catenane, Metallarectangles and Polynuclear Assemblies from Di(N-Heterocyclic Carbene) Ligands

The 2,7-fluorenone-linked bis(6-imidazo[1,5-a]pyridinium) salt H2-1(PF6)2 reacts with Ag2O in CH3CN to yield the [2]catenane [Ag4(1)4](PF6)4. The [2]catenane rearranges in DMF to yield two metallamacrocycles [Ag2(1)2](PF6)2. 2,7-Fluorenone-bridged bis-(imidazolium) salts H2-L(PF6)2 (L=2 a, 2 b) react with Ag2O in CH3CN to yield metallamacrocycles [Ag2(L)2](PF6)2 with interplanar distances between the fluorenone rings too small for [2]catenane formation. Intra- and intermolecular π⋅⋅⋅π interactions between the fluorenone groups were observed by X-ray crystallography. The strongly kinked 2,7-fluorenone bridged bis(5-imidazo[1,5-a]pyridinium) salt H2-4(PF6)2 reacts with Ag2O to yield [Ag2(4)(CN)](PF6), while the tetranuclear assembly [Ag4(4)2(CO3)](PF6)2 was obtained in the presence of K2CO3.

Advancing Heterogeneous Organic Synthesis With Coordination Chemistry-Empowered Single-Atom Catalysts

For traditional metal complexes, intricate chemistry is required to acquire appropriate ligands for controlling the electron and steric hindrance of metal active centers. Comparatively, the preparation of single-atom catalysts is much easier with more straightforward and effective accesses for the arrangement and control of metal active centers. The presence of coordination atoms or neighboring functional atoms on the supports' surface ensures the stability of metal single-atoms and their interactions with individual metal atoms substantially regulate the performance of metal active centers. Therefore, the collaborative interaction between metal and the surrounding coordination environment enhances the initiation of reaction substrates and the formation and transformation of crucial intermediate compounds, which imparts single-atom catalysts with significant catalytic efficacy, rendering them a valuable framework for investigating the correlation between structure and activity, as well as the reaction mechanism of catalysts in organic reactions. Herein, comprehensive overviews of the coordination interaction for both homogeneous metal complexes and single-atom catalysts in organic reactions are provided. Additionally, reflective conjectures about the advancement of single-atom catalysts in organic synthesis are also proposed to present as a reference for later development.

The Use of Photocycloaddition Reactions to Drive Mechanical Motions Resembling Humanoid Movements

With the aim of producing a photomechanical material for incorporation in soft microrobots, a one-dimensional diene coordination polymer (CP) [Cd(F-bpeb)(3-CBA)2]n (CP1, F-bpeb=4,4'-((1E,1'E)-(2,5-difluoro-1,4-phenylene)bis(ethene-2,1-diyl))dipyridine, 3-HCBA=3-chlorobenzoic acid) was synthesized and characterized. Irradiation of CP1 with ultraviolet (UV) or visible light causes [2+2] photocycloaddition reactions resulting in the introduction of crystal strain which triggers various types of crystal movements. Composite films of CP1-PVA (SC) fabricated by dispersing CP1 crystals into polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) solution allow amplification of the crystal movement so that the film strips exhibit fast and flexible curling upon photoirradiation. The composite films may be cut into long rectangular strips and folded to simulate soft microrobots which exhibit a variety of fast, flexible and continuous photomechanical movements resembling a human performing various gymnastic exercises.

Discrete Quadruple Stacks Formed in a Nanosized Metallorectangle

An iridium-cornered nanosized metallorectangle was obtained by combining a quinoxalinophenanthrophenazine-connected Janus-di-imidazolylidene ligand and 4,4'-bipyridine. This metallorectangle was used as host for a series of planar molecules, including pyrene, triphenylene, perylene, coronene, and N,N'-dimethyl-naphthalenetetracarboxy-diimide (NTCDI). The binding of coronene and NTCDI followed a strongly positive cooperative 1:2 stoichiometric binding model, as the inclusion of the first guest generates the geometrical requirements for the optimum encapsulation of the second planar molecule. The simultaneous encapsulation of coronene and NTCDI produces a heteroguest inclusion system, whose exchange dynamics was studied by means of variable temperature 1H NMR spectroscopy.

General and Modular Synthesis of Covalent Organic Cages for Efficient Molecular Recognition

Cage-type structures based on coordination and dynamic covalent chemistry have the characteristics of facile and efficient preparation but poor stability. Chemically stable organic cages, generally involving fragment coupling and multi-step reactions, are relatively difficult to synthesize. Herein, we offer a general and modular strategy to customize covalent organic cages with diverse skeletons and sizes. First, one skeleton (S) module with three extension (E) modules and three reaction (R) modules are connected by one- or two-step coupling to get the triangular monomer bearing three reaction sites. Then one-pot Friedel-Crafts condensation of the monomer and linking module of paraformaldehyde produces the designed organic cages. The cage forming could be regulated by the geometrical configuration of monomeric blocks. The S-E-R angles in the monomer is crucial; only 120° (2,4-dimethoxyphen as reaction module) or 60° (2,5-dimethoxyphen as reaction module) angle between S-E-R successfully affords the resulting cages. By the rational design of the three modules, a series of organic cages have been constructed. In addition, the host-guest properties show that the representative cages could strongly encapsulate neutral aromatic diimide guests driven by solvophobic interactions in polar solvents, giving the highest association constant of (2.58±0.18)×105 M-1.

An N-heterocyclic carbene-based pincer system of palladium and its versatile reactivity under oxidizing conditions

NHC-based pincers (NHC = N-heterocyclic carbene) have been broadly employed as supporting platforms, and their palladium complexes have found many synthetic applications. However, previous studies mainly focused on the NHC pincers of palladium featuring an oxidation number of +II. In contrast, oxidation of these well-defined Pd(II) species and the study of their fundamental high-valent Pd chemistry remain largely undeveloped. In addition, from a perspective of PdII/PdIV catalysis, the reactivity and degradation of NHC pincers in catalytically relevant reactions have not been well understood. In this work, a series of Pd(II) complexes supported by a well-known NHC^Aryl^NHC pincer platform have been prepared. Their reactivity towards various oxidizing reagents, including halogen surrogates, electrophilic fluorine reagents, and alkyl/aryl halides, has been examined. In some cases, ambient-characterizable high-valent Pd NHCs, which have been scarcely reported, were obtained. The carbenes incorporated into the pincer framework proved to be effective spectator donors. In contrast, the central aryl moiety exhibits versatile reactivity and collapse pathways, allowing it to function either as a spectator or a non-innocent actor.

Sintering of Platinum-Containing Conjugated Polymers: Gas Adsorption and Catalysis of the Formed Pt-Carbon Composites

Pt-containing meta- and para-linked poly(phenyleneethynylene)s were synthesized by the dehydrochlorination coupling polymerization of PtCl2(PBu3)2 with m- and p-diethynylbenzenes. The formed polymers were sintered at 900 °C to obtain Pt-graphene hybrids, whose structures were examined by Raman scattering spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements. Shapes─facets, terraces, and steps─with average diameters of 2.0-3.4 μm were observed by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM). The Pt-graphene hybrids moderately adsorbed CO2 and O2 and slightly adsorbed ethylene and methane. Epoxidation of stilbene was carried out using Pt-graphene hybrids as catalysts to obtain stilbene oxide.

Construction of olefinic coordination polymer single crystal platforms: precise organic synthesis, in situ exploration of reaction mechanisms and beyond

Olefin [2+2] photocycloaddition reactions based on coordination-bond templates provide numerous advantages for the selective synthesis of cyclobutane compounds. This review outlines the recent advances in the design and construction of single crystal platforms of olefinic coordination polymers for precise organic synthesis, in situ exploration of reaction mechanisms, and possible developments as comprehensively as possible. Numerous examples are presented to illustrate how the arrangements of the olefin pairs influence the solid-state photoreactivity and examine the types of cyclobutane products. Furthermore, the photocycloaddition reaction mechanisms are investigated by combining advanced techniques such as single crystal X-ray diffraction, powder X-ray diffraction, nuclear magnetic resonance, infrared spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, laser scanning confocal microscopy and theoretical calculations. Finally, potential applications resulting from promising physicochemical properties before and after photoreactions are discussed, and existing challenges and possible solutions are also proposed.

Covalent Post-Synthetic Modification of Metal-Organic Cages: Concepts and Recent Progress

Metal-organic cages (MOCs) are supramolecular coordination complexes that have internal cavities for hosting guest molecules and exhibiting various properties. However, the functions of MOCs are limited by the choice of the building blocks. Post-synthetic modification (PSM) is a technique that can introduce new functional groups and replace existing ones on the MOCs without changing their geometry. Among many PSM methods, covalent PSM is a promising approach to modify MOCs with tailored structures and functions. Covalent PSM can be applied to either the internal cavity or the external surface of the MOCs, depending on the functionality expected to be customized. However, there are still some challenges and limitations in the field of covalent PSM of MOCs, such as the balance between the stability of MOCs and the harshness of organic reactions involved in covalent PSMs. This concept article introduces the organic reaction types involved in covalent PSM of MOCs, their new applications after modification, and summarizes and provides an outlook of this research field.

Molecular Face-Rotating Polyhedra: Chiral Cages Inspired by Mathematics

ConspectusMolecular polyhedral cages, notable for their enclosed inner cavities, can possess varying degrees of symmetry, spanning from regular Platonic polyhedra to lower symmetry forms that may display chirality. Crafting chiral molecular cages typically involves using building blocks containing stereogenic elements or arranging achiral components in a manner that lacks mirror and inversion symmetries. Achieving precise control over their chirality poses both significance and challenges.In this Account, we present an overview of our research endeavors in the realm of chiral molecular polyhedral cages, drawing inspiration from Buckminster Fuller's "Face-Rotating Polyhedra (FRP)". Mathematically, FRP introduce a unique form of chirality distinguished by a rotating pattern around the center of each face, setting it apart from regular polyhedra.Molecular FRP can be constructed using two types of facial building blocks. The first includes rigid, planar molecules such as truxene and triazatruxene, which exhibit either clockwise or counterclockwise rotations in two dimensions. The second category involves propeller-like molecules, e.g., tetraphenylethylene, 1,2,3,4,5-penta(4-phenylaldehyde)pyrrole, and tridurylborane, displaying dynamic stereochemistry.The synthesis of FRP may potentially yield a diverse array of stereoisomers. Achieving high stereoselectivity becomes feasible through the selection of building blocks with specific substitution patterns and rigidity. Prominent noncovalent repulsive forces within the resulting cages often play a pivotal role in the dynamic covalent assembly process, ultimately leading to the formation of thermodynamically stable FRP products.The capacity to generate a multitude of stereoisomers, combined with the integration of chiral vertices, has facilitated investigations into phenomena such as chiral self-sorting and the "sergeant and soldiers" chiral amplification effect in FRP. Even the inclusion of one chiral vertex significantly impacts the stereochemical configuration of the entire cage. While many facial building blocks establish a stable rotational pattern in FRP, other units, such as tridurylborane, can dynamically transition between P and M configurations within the cage structures. The kinetic characteristics of such stereolabile FRP can be elucidated through physicochemical investigations.Our research extends beyond the FRP concept to encompass mathematical analysis of these structures. Graph theory, particularly the coloring problem, sheds light on the intricate facial patterns exhibited by various FRP stereoisomers and serves as an efficient tool to facilitate the discovery of novel FRP structures. This approach offers a fresh paradigm for designing and analyzing chiral molecular polyhedral cages, showcasing in our work the synergy between mathematics and molecular design.

Guest-Shuttling in a Nanosized Metallobox

An iridium-conjoined long and narrow metallorectangle was obtained by combining a quinoxalinophenanthrophenazine-connected Janus-di-imidazolylidene ligand and pyrazine. The size and shape of this assembly together with the fused polyaromatic nature of its panels provides it with properties that are uncommon for other metallosupramolecular assemblies. For example, this nanosized 'slit-like' metallobox is able show very large binding affinities with planar organic molecules in such a way, that the cavity is asymmetrically occupied by the guest molecule. This unsymmetrical conformation leads to the existence of a large amplitude motion of these guests, which slide between the two sides of the cavity of the host, thus constituting rare examples of molecular shuttles.

Half-sandwich Ni(II) complexes bearing enantiopure bidentate NHC-carboxylate ligands: efficient catalysts for the hydrosilylative reduction of acetophenones

Chiral nickel complexes containing NHC-carboxylate chelate ligands derived from the (S)-isomeric form of amino acids have been synthesised from the corresponding imidazolium salt and nickelocene. The presence of the carboxylate on the N-side arm of the heterocycle results in the competing formation of mixtures of mono- and bis-NHC complexes (i.e., [Ni(η5-Cp)(κ2-C,O-NHC)] and [Ni(κ2-C,O-NHC)2]), both of which retain the (S)-configuration of the stereogenic center and which can be separated by chromatography. Both the 18e- and 16e- complexes are found to be very stable and cannot be interconverted. The composition of the resulting mixtures depends mainly on the entity of the amino acid residue and, of more practical interest, on the reaction conditions. Thus, microwave heating and MeCN as a solvent favor the formation of the half-sandwich nickel complexes, rather than the bis-NHC compounds. Some of the [Ni(η5-Cp)(κ2-C,O-NHC)] complexes turn out to be among the best nickel catalysts for the hydrosilylative reduction of p-acetophenones described to date, although without chiral induction, in the absence of activating additives and under mild catalytic conditions.

Unravelling the Roles of Solvophobic Effects and π⋅⋅⋅π Stacking Interactions in the Formation of [2]Catenanes Featuring Di-(N-Heterocyclic Carbene) Building Blocks

A series of [2]catenanes has been prepared from di-NHC building blocks by utilizing solvophobic effects and/or π⋅⋅⋅π stacking interactions. The dinickel naphthobiscarbene complex syn-[1] and the kinked biphenyl-bridged bipyridyl ligand L2 yield the [2]catenane [2-IL](OTf)4 by self-assembly. Solvophobic effects are pivotal for the formation of the interlocked species. Substitution of the biphenyl-linker in L2 for a pyromellitic diimide group gave ligand L3 , which yielded in combination with syn-[1] the [2]catenane [3-IL](OTf)4 . This assembly exhibits enhanced stability in diluted solution, aided by additional π⋅⋅⋅π stacking interactions. The π⋅⋅⋅π stacking was augmented by the introduction of a pyrene bridge between two NHC donors in ligand L4 . Di-NHC precursor H2 -L4 (PF6 )2 reacts with Ag2 O to give the [Ag2 L4 2 ]2 [2]catenane [4-IL](PF6 )4 , which shows strong π⋅⋅⋅π stacking interactions between the pyrene groups. This assembly was readily converted into the [Au2 L4 2 ]2 gold species [5-IL](PF6 )4 , which exhibits exceptional stability based on the strong π⋅⋅⋅π stacking interactions and the enhanced stability of the Au-CNHC bonds.

Carbenes from cyclopropanated aromatics

Although a ripe old discipline by now, carbene chemistry continues to flourish as both theorists and experimentalists have shown sustained interest in this area of research. While there are numerous ways of generating carbenes, the thermal and/or photochemical decomposition of diazo compounds and diazirines remains, by far, the most commonly used method of producing these intermediates. There is no disputing the fact that these nitrogenous precursors have served carbene researchers well, but their use is not without problems. They are often sensitive and hazardous to handle and, sometimes, the desired nitrogenous precursor simply may not be available, e.g., for synthetic reasons, to study the particular carbene of interest. Furthermore, there is a legitimate concern that the photochemical generation of carbenes in solution from diazo compounds and diazirines may be contaminated by reactions in the excited states (RIES) of the precursors themselves. As an alternative, several laboratories, including ours, have used cyclopropanated aromatic systems to generate a wide range of carbenes. In each case, the cheleotropic extrusion of carbenes is accompanied by the formation of stable aromatic by-products such as phenanthrene, indane, naphthalene, and 1,4-dihydronaphthalene. The emergence of these "non-traditional" carbene sources, their versatility, and promise are reviewed in this work.

Silver and Gold Pillarplex Pseudorotaxanes from α,ω-Dicarboxylic Acids

A series of pseudorotaxanes with supramolecular organometallic silver(I) and gold(I) pillarplexes acting as rings and different α,ω-dicarboxylic acids as axle components are reported. The successful formation of the host-guest complexes is shown by 1 H NMR spectroscopy and respective NMR titration. Additional evaluation with ITC titration experiments yielded dissociation constants (Kd ) ranging from 10-5 to 10-7  M. Single-crystal X-Ray diffraction analysis reveals a particularly exciting pore alignment of different examples in the solid state depending on the length of the guest. The work highlights, that dicarboxylic acids can penetrate the tight tubular pillarplex pore, paving the way to future mechanically interlocked molecules and materials.

A Coordination-Driven Self-Assembly and NIR Photothermal Conversion Study of Organometallic Handcuffs

Due to their fascinating topological structures and application prospects, coordination supramolecular complexes have continuously been studied by scientists. However, the controlled construction and property study of organometallic handcuffs remains a significant and challenging research subject in the area of supramolecular chemistry. Hence, a series of tetranuclear organometallic and heterometallic handcuffs bearing different size and metal types were rationally designed and successfully synthesized by utilizing a quadridentate pyridyl ligand (tetra-(3-pyridylphenyl)ethylene) based on three Cp*Rh (Cp* = η5-C5Me5) fragments bearing specific longitudinal dimensions and conjugated planes. These results were determined with single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis technology, ESI-MS NMR spectroscopy, etc. Importantly, the photoquenching effect of Cp* groups and the discrepancy of intermolecular π-π stacking interactions between building block and half-sandwich fragments promote markedly different photothermal conversion results. These results will further push the synthesis of topological structures and the development of photothermal conversion materials.
