DNA liquid crystals with AIE effect toward humidity-indicating biomaterials

In this study, by fabricating DNA doped with tetraphenylethene-containing ammonium surfactant, the resulting solvent-free DNA ionic complex could undergo a humidity-induced phase change that could be well tracked by the fluorescence signal of the surfactant. Taking advantage of the humidity-induced change in fluorescence, the reported ionic DNA complex could accurately indicate the humidity in real time.

EQCM Analysis of the Insertion Phenomena in a n-Doped Poly-Alkyl-Terthiophene With Regioregular Pattern of Substitution

In the present work, we have undertaken the study of the n-doping process in poly-3,3″-didodecyl-2,2':5',2″-terthiophene (poly-33″-DDTT) employing the electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance (EQCM). The present study aims at understanding how cathodic charge in n-doped poly-33″-DDTT is compensated. For this purpose, the in situ analysis of the variations of the polymeric mass has been considered. Poly-33″-DDTT was obtained as a thin coating onto a metallic substrate via the anodic coupling of the corresponding monomer 3,3″-didodecyl-2,2':5',2″-terthiophene (33″-DDTT). When subjected to electrochemical n-doping in the polarization interval -2.5 ≤ E _appl ≤ 0 V vs. Ag/Ag⁺, the films of poly-33″-DDTT varied their mass according to a mechanism of cations insertion during n-doping and cations extraction during polymer neutralization. In fact, the electrochemical doping of polythiophenes requires the accompanying exchange of charged species to maintain the electroneutrality within the structure of the polymer in all states of polarization. At the end of a full electrochemical cycle (consisting of the n-doping and the successive neutralization of poly-33″-DDTT), the polymer retains a fraction of the mass acquired during n-doping, thus manifesting the phenomena of mass trapping. The combined analysis of electrochemical and microgravimetric data suggests that poly-33″-DDTT in the n-doped state undergoes (or electrocatalyzes) uncontrolled electrochemical reactions that are not accompanied by mass variations.

Controlled Synthesis of Poly[(3-alkylthio)thiophene]s and Their Application to Organic Field-Effect Transistors

Regioregular polythiophenes have been widely used in organic electronic applications due to their solution processability with chemical modification through side chain engineering, as well as their microstructural organization and good hole transport properties. Here, we introduce alkylthio side chains, (poly[(3-alkylthio)thiophene]s; P3ATTs), with strong noncovalent sulfur molecular interactions, to main chain thienyl backbones. These P3ATTs were compared with alkyl-substituted polythiophene (poly(3-alkylthiophene); P3AT) variants such that the effects of straight (hexyl and decyl) and branched (2-ethylhexyl) side chains (with and without S atoms) on their thin-film morphologies and crystalline states could be investigated. P3ATTs with linear alkylthio side chains (P3HTT, hexylthio; P3DTT, decylthio) did not attain the expected higher organic field-effect transistor (OFET) mobilities with respect to P3HT (hexyl) and P3DT (decyl) mainly due to their lower regioregularity (76-78%), although P3ATTs exhibit an enhanced tendency for aggregation and compact molecular packing, as indicated by the red-shifting of the absorption spectra and the shortening of the π-π stacking distance, respectively. Moreover, the loss of regioregularity issue can be solved by introducing more soluble 2-ethylhexylthio branched side chains to form poly[3-(2-ethylhexylthio)thiophene] (P3EHTT), which provides enhanced crystallinity and efficient charge mobility (increased by up to a factor of 3) with respect to the poly(2-ethylhexylthiophene) (P3EHT) without S atoms in the side moieties. This study demonstrates that the presence of side chain alkylthio structural motifs with nonbonded interactions in polythiophene semiconductors has a beneficial impact on the molecular conformation, morphologies, structural packing, and charge transport in OFET devices.

Tunable Properties of Nature-Inspired N,N'-Alkylated Riboflavin Semiconductors

A series of novel soluble nature-inspired flavin derivatives substituted with short butyl and bulky ethyl-adamantyl alkyl groups was prepared via simple and straightforward synthetic approach with moderate to good yields. The comprehensive characterization of the materials, to assess their application potential, has demonstrated that the modification of the conjugated flavin core enables delicate tuning of the absorption and emission properties, optical bandgap, frontier molecular orbital energies, melting points, and thermal stability. Moreover, the thin films prepared thereof exhibit smooth and homogeneous morphology with generally high stability over time.

Supramolecular Assembly of Thiophene-Based Oligomers into Nanostructured Fluorescent Conductive and Chiral Microfibers

The implementation of nano/microelectronic devices requires efficient strategies for the realization of supramolecular structures with desired function and supported on appropriate substrates. This article illustrates a strategy based on the synthesis of thiophene oligomers having the same "sulfur-overrich" quaterthiophene inner core (non bonding interactional algorithm) and different terminal groups. Nano/microfibers are formed on surfaces having a morphology independent of the nature of the deposition substrate and displaying a wide tuning of properties that make the fibers optoelectronically suitable for application in devices.

Methyl Scanning for Mechanochemical Chalcogen-Bonding Cascade Switches

Chalcogen-bonding cascade switching was introduced recently to produce the chemistry tools needed to image physical forces in biological systems. In the original flipper probe, one methyl group appeared to possibly interfere with the cascade switch. In this report, this questionable methyl group is replaced by a hydrogen. The deletion of this methyl group in planarizable push-pull probes was not trivial because it required the synthesis of dithienothiophenes with four different substituents on the four available carbons. The mechanosensitivity of the resulting demethylated flipper probe was nearly identical to that of the original. Thus methyl groups in the switching region are irrelevant for function, whereas those in the twisting region are essential. This result supports the chalcogen-bonding cascade switching concept and, most importantly, removes significant synthetic demands from future probe development.

Nitropyridine-1-Oxides as Excellent π-Hole Donors: Interplay between σ-Hole (Halogen, Hydrogen, Triel, and Coordination Bonds) and π-Hole Interactions

In this manuscript, we use the primary source of geometrical information, i.e., Cambridge Structural Database (CSD), combined with density functional theory (DFT) calculations (PBE0-D3/def2-TZVP level of theory) to demonstrate the relevance of π-hole interactions in para-nitro substituted pyridine-1-oxides. More importantly, we show that the molecular electrostatic potential (MEP) value above and below the π–hole of the nitro group is largely influenced by the participation of the N-oxide group in several interactions like hydrogen-bonding (HB) halogen-bonding (XB), triel bonding (TrB), and finally, coordination-bonding (CB) (N⁺–O⁻ coordinated to a transition metal). The CSD search discloses that p-nitro-pyridine-1-oxide derivatives have a strong propensity to participate in π-hole interactions via the nitro group and, concurrently, N-oxide group participates in a series of interactions as electron donor. Remarkably, the DFT calculations show from strong to moderate cooperativity effects between π–hole and HB/XB/TrB/CB interactions (σ-bonding). The synergistic effects between π-hole and σ-hole bonding interactions are studied in terms of cooperativity energies, using MEP surface analysis and the Bader’s quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM).

Mechanosensitive Fluorescent Probes to Image Membrane Tension in Mitochondria, Endoplasmic Reticulum, and Lysosomes

Measuring forces inside cells is particularly challenging. With the development of quantitative microscopy, fluorophores which allow the measurement of forces became highly desirable. We have previously introduced a mechanosensitive flipper probe, which responds to the change of plasma membrane tension by changing its fluorescence lifetime and thus allows tension imaging by FLIM. Herein, we describe the design, synthesis, and evaluation of flipper probes that selectively label intracellular organelles, i.e., lysosomes, mitochondria, and the endoplasmic reticulum. The probes respond uniformly to osmotic shocks applied extracellularly, thus confirming sensitivity toward changes in membrane tension. At rest, different lifetimes found for different organelles relate to known differences in membrane organization rather than membrane tension and allow colabeling in the same cells. At the organelle scale, lifetime heterogeneity provides unprecedented insights on ER tubules and sheets, and nuclear membranes. Examples on endosomal trafficking or increase of tension at mitochondrial constriction sites outline the potential of intracellularly targeted fluorescent tension probes to address essential questions that were previously beyond reach.

Streptavidin interfacing as a general strategy to localize fluorescent membrane tension probes in cells

To image the mechanical properties of biological membranes, twisted push-pull mechanophores that respond to membrane tension by planarization in the ground state have been introduced recently. For their application in biological systems, these so-called fluorescent flippers will have to be localized to specific environments of cellular membranes. In this report, we explore streptavidin as a versatile connector between biotinylated flipper probes and biotinylated targets. Fluorescence spectroscopy and microscopy with LUVs and GUVs reveal the specific conditions needed for desthiobiotin-loaded streptavidin to deliver biotinylated flippers selectively to biotinylated membranes. Selectivity for biotinylated plasma membranes is also observed in HeLa cells, confirming the compatibility of this strategy with biological systems. Streptavidin interfacing does not affect the mechanosensitivity of the flipper probes, red shift in the excitation maximum and fluorescence lifetime increase with membrane order and tension, as demonstrated, inter alia, using FLIM.

Unexpected chalcogen bonds in tetravalent sulfur compounds

Combined CSD analysis and theoretical calculations show the importance of the polarizability in chalcogen bonding interactions. We provide evidence that the Lewis base has a preference in some cases for the σ-hole that is opposite to the more polarizable group instead of the more electron withdrawing one.

Self-Assembly of a Structurally Defined Chiro-Optical Peptide-Oligothiophene Hybrid Material

Conducting polymers are routinely used in optoelectronic biomaterials, but large polymer polydispersity and poor aqueous compatibility complicate integration with biomolecular templates and development of discrete and defined supramolecular complexes. Herein, we report on a chiro-optical hybrid material generated by the self-assembly of an anionic peptide and a chemically defined cationic pentameric thiophene in aqueous environment. The peptide acts as a stereochemical template for the thiophene and adopts an α-helical conformation upon association, inducing optical activity in the thiophene π-π* transition region. Theoretical calculations confirm the experimentally observed induced structural changes and indicate the importance of electrostatic interactions in the complex. The association process is also probed at the substrate-solvent interface using peptide-functionalized gold nanoparticles, indicating that the peptide can also act as a scaffold when immobilized, resulting in structurally well-defined supramolecular complexes. The hybrid complex could rapidly be assembled, and the kinetics of the formation could be monitored by utilizing the local surface plasmon resonance originating from the gold nanoparticles. We foresee that these findings will aid in designing novel hybrid materials and provide a possible route for the development of functional optoelectronic interfaces for both biomaterials and energy harvesting applications.

Novel Riboflavin-Inspired Conjugated Bio-Organic Semiconductors

Flavins are known to be extremely versatile, thus enabling routes to innumerable modifications in order to obtain desired properties. Thus, in the present paper, the group of bio-inspired conjugated materials based on the alloxazine core is synthetized using two efficient novel synthetic approaches providing relatively high reaction yields. The comprehensive characterization of the materials, in order to evaluate the properties and application potential, has shown that the modification of the initial alloxazine core with aromatic substituents allows fine tuning of the optical bandgap, position of electronic orbitals, absorption and emission properties. Interestingly, the compounds possess multichromophoric behavior, which is assumed to be the results of an intramolecular proton transfer.

Impact of helical organization on the photovoltaic properties of oligothiophene supramolecular polymers

Higher order structures of semiconducting supramolecular polymers have a huge impact on their BHJ-OPV device performance.

Helical self-assembly of functional π-conjugated molecules offers unique photochemical and electronic properties in the spectroscopic level, but there are only a few examples that demonstrate their positive impact on the optoelectronic device level. Here, we demonstrate that hydrogen-bonded tapelike supramolecular polymers of a barbiturated oligo(alkylthiophene) show notable improvement in their photovoltaic properties upon organizing into helical nanofibers. A tapelike hydrogen-bonded supramolecular array of barbiturated oligo(butylthiophene) molecules was directly visualized by STM at a liquid–solid interface. TEM, AFM and XRD revealed that the tapelike supramolecular polymers further organize into helical nanofibers in solution and bulk states. Bulk heterojunction solar cells of the helical nanofibers and soluble fullerene showed a power conversion efficiency of 4.5%, which is markedly high compared to that of the regioisomer of butyl chains organizing into 3D lamellar agglomerates.

Directing intracellular supramolecular assembly with N-heteroaromatic quaterthiophene analogues

Self-assembly in situ, where synthetic molecules are programmed to organize in a specific and complex environment i.e., within living cells, can be a unique strategy to influence cellular functions. Here we present a small series of rationally designed oligothiophene analogues that specifically target, locate and dynamically self-report their supramolecular behavior within the confinement of a cell. Through the recognition of the terminal alkyl substituent and the amphiphilic pyridine motif, we show that the cell provides different complementary pathways for self-assembly that can be traced easily with fluorescence microscopy as their molecular organization emits in distinct fluorescent bands. Importantly, the control and induction of both forms are achieved by time, temperature and the use of the intracellular transport inhibitor, bafilomycin A1. We showcase the importance of both intrinsic (cell) and extrinsic (stimulus) factors for self-organization and the potential of such a platform toward developing synthetic functional components within living cells.

Thiophene-Based Organic Semiconductors

Thiophene-based π-conjugated organic small molecules and polymers are the research subject of significant current interest owing to their potential use as organic semiconductors in material chemistry. Despite simple and similar molecular structures, the hitherto reported properties of thiophene-based organic semiconductors are rather diverse. Design of high performance organic semiconducting materials requires a thorough understanding of inter- and intra-molecular interactions, solid-state packing, and the influence of both factors on the charge carrier transport. In this chapter, thiophene-based organic semiconductors, which are classified in terms of their chemical structures and their structure-property relationships, are addressed for the potential applications as organic photovoltaics (OPVs), organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) and organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs).

Planarizable Push-Pull Probes: Overtwisted Flipper Mechanophores

Planarizable push-pull fluorescent probes, also referred to as flipper probes, have been introduced as conceptually innovative mechanophores that report on forces in their local environment in lipid bilayer membranes. The best flipper probes respond to a change from liquid disordered to solid ordered membranes with a red shift in excitation of 50-90 nm. A simultaneous increase in fluorescence lifetime and negligible background fluorescence from the aqueous phase qualifies these fluorescent probes for meaningful imaging in live cells. Here, we report that the replacement of methyl with isobutyl substituents along the scaffold of a dithienothiophene dimer strongly reduces fluorescence intensity but increases solvatochromism slightly. These trends imply that the large substituents in "leucine flippers" hinder the planarization in the first excited state to result in twisted intramolecular charge transfer (TICT). As a result of this overtwisting, the leucine flippers form interesting fluorescent micelles in water but fail to respond to changes in membrane order. These dramatic changes in function provide one of the most impressive illustrations for the hypersensitivity of fluorescent membrane probes toward small changes in their structure.

Green-to-Red Electrochromic Fe(II) Metallo-Supramolecular Polyelectrolytes Self-Assembled from Fluorescent 2,6-Bis(2-pyridyl)pyrimidine Bithiophene

The structure and properties of metallo-supramolecular polyelectrolytes (MEPEs) self-assembled from rigid 2,6-bis(2-pyridyl)pyrimidine and the metal ions Fe^II and Co^II are presented. While FeL1-MEPE (L1 = 1,4-bis[2,6-bis(2-pyridyl)pyrimidin-4-yl]benzene) is deep blue, FeL2- and CoL2-MEPE (L2 = 5,5'-bis[2,6-bis(2-pyridyl)pyrimidin-4-yl]-2,2'-bithiophene) are intense green and red in color, respectively. These novel MEPEs display a high extinction coefficient and solvatochromism. Ligand L2 shows a high absolute fluorescence quantum yield (Φ_f = 82%). Viscosity and static light-scattering measurements reveal that the molar masses of these MEPEs are in the range of 1 × 10⁸ g/mol under the current experimental conditions. In water, FeL1-MEPE forms a viscous gel at 20 °C (c = 8 mM). Thin films of high optical quality are fabricated by dip coating on transparent conducting indium tin oxide (ITO) glass substrate. Optical, electrochemical, and electrochromic properties of the obtained MEPEs are presented. Green to red and blue to colorless electrochromism is observed for FeL2-MEPE and FeL1-MEPE, respectively. The results show that the electrochromic properties are affected by the ligand topology. The Fe-MEPEs show a reversible redox behavior of the Fe^II/Fe^III couple at 0.86 and 0.82 V versus Fc⁺/Fc and display an excellent redox cycle stability under switching conditions. FeL2-MEPE in its oxidized state exhibits a broad absorption band covering the near-IR region (ca. 1500 nm) due to the ligand-to-metal charge transfer transition originating due to charge delocalization in the bithiophene spacer.

Anion Transport with Chalcogen Bonds

In this report, we introduce synthetic anion transporters that operate with chalcogen bonds. Electron-deficient dithieno[3,2-b;2',3'-d]thiophenes (DTTs) are identified as ideal to bind anions in the focal point of the σ holes on the cofacial endocyclic sulfur atoms. Anion binding in solution and anion transport across lipid bilayers are found to increase with the depth of the σ holes of the DTT anionophores. These results introduce DTTs and related architectures as a privileged motif to engineer chalcogen bonds into functional systems, complementary in scope to classics such as 2,2'-bipyrroles or 2,2'-bipyridines that operate with hydrogen bonds and lone pairs, respectively.

Filling nanoporous polymer thin films: an easy route toward the full control of the 3D nanostructure

A fully controllable interpenetrated 3D nanostructure is obtained by filling a nanoporous polymer ultrathin film with a second organic component.
