Hierarchical Assemblies of Supramolecular Coordination Complexes

Hierarchical supramolecules composed of starch-based nanocluster aggregates with light-responsive mechanical strain for remotely rapid and precise actuation

Hierarchical supramolecular systems, characterized by nanoscale sensitivity and macroscopic tangible changes, offer promising perspectives for the design of remotely controllable, rapid, and precise actuation materials, serving as a potential substitution for non-intelligent and complex actuation switches. Herein, we reported on the disassembly of orderly and rigid starch helical covalent structures, and their subsequent reassembly into a hierarchical supramolecular gel composed of nanocluster aggregates, integrating supramolecular interactions of three different scales. The incorporation of photo-sensitive FeIIITA, a complex of trivalent iron ions and tannic acid, significantly enhances the photo-responsive strain capacity of the hierarchical supramolecular gel. The supramolecular gel exhibits its features in a rapid light-responsive rate of hardness and viscosity, enabling the actuation of objects within 22 s under light exposure when employed as a remote actuation switch. Meanwhile, this actuation mechanism of the hierarchical supramolecular gel also has a promising perspective in precise control, identifying and actuating one of the two objects in distances of 0.8 mm even smaller scales. Our work provides a reliable reference for replacing complex actuation switches with intelligent materials for remote, rapid, and accurate actuation, and offers valuable insights for actuation in harsh and vacuum outdoor environments.

Modulation of the isomerization of iminothioindoxyl switches by supramolecular confinement

Here we present the formation of an iminothioindoxyl (ITI)⊂Cage complex that retains the photochemical properties of the photoswitch within a confined environment in water. At the same time, besides ultrafast switching inside the cage, the ITI photoswitch displays an intriguing bifurcation of the excited state isomerization pathway when encapsulated.

Discrete Quadruple Stacks Formed in a Nanosized Metallorectangle

An iridium-cornered nanosized metallorectangle was obtained by combining a quinoxalinophenanthrophenazine-connected Janus-di-imidazolylidene ligand and 4,4'-bipyridine. This metallorectangle was used as host for a series of planar molecules, including pyrene, triphenylene, perylene, coronene, and N,N'-dimethyl-naphthalenetetracarboxy-diimide (NTCDI). The binding of coronene and NTCDI followed a strongly positive cooperative 1:2 stoichiometric binding model, as the inclusion of the first guest generates the geometrical requirements for the optimum encapsulation of the second planar molecule. The simultaneous encapsulation of coronene and NTCDI produces a heteroguest inclusion system, whose exchange dynamics was studied by means of variable temperature 1H NMR spectroscopy.

Supramolecular cage-mediated cargo transport

A steady stream of material transport based on carriers and channels in living systems plays an extremely important role in normal life activities. Inspired by nature, researchers have extensively applied supramolecular cages in cargo transport because of their unique three-dimensional structures and excellent physicochemical properties. In this review, we will focus on the development of supramolecular cages as carriers and channels for cargo transport in abiotic and biological systems over the past fifteen years. In addition, we will discuss future challenges and potential applications of supramolecular cages in substance transport.

Sintering of Platinum-Containing Conjugated Polymers: Gas Adsorption and Catalysis of the Formed Pt-Carbon Composites

Pt-containing meta- and para-linked poly(phenyleneethynylene)s were synthesized by the dehydrochlorination coupling polymerization of PtCl2(PBu3)2 with m- and p-diethynylbenzenes. The formed polymers were sintered at 900 °C to obtain Pt-graphene hybrids, whose structures were examined by Raman scattering spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements. Shapes─facets, terraces, and steps─with average diameters of 2.0-3.4 μm were observed by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM). The Pt-graphene hybrids moderately adsorbed CO2 and O2 and slightly adsorbed ethylene and methane. Epoxidation of stilbene was carried out using Pt-graphene hybrids as catalysts to obtain stilbene oxide.

7Li NMR Spectroscopy: A Tool for Determining Dimerization Constants and Averaged Dimerization Constants of the Monomer/Dimer Equilibrium of Hierarchical Helicates

7Li nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy is an ideal tool to study hierarchically assembled helicates of the form Li[Li3L6Ti2]. Internally bound and external lithium ions can be well distinguished by solution- or solid-state NMR spectroscopy and dimerization constants of the monomer/dimer equilibrium can be easily determined in solution. Averaged dimerization constants can be estimated in case of statistical mixtures of helicates formed from mixtures of ligands.

Stabilization of Lantern-Type Metal-Organic Cages (MOCs) by Protective Control of Ligand Exchange Rates

Self-assembling systems in nature display remarkable complexity with assemblies of different sub-units to generate functional species. Synthetic analogues of such systems are a challenge, often requiring the ability to bias distributions that are under thermodynamic assembly control. Using lantern-type MOCs (metal-organic cages) as a prototypical self-assembling system, herein we explore the role that steric bulk plays in controlling the exchange rate of ligands in paddlewheel-based assemblies, and thus the stability of cages, in competitive self-assembling scenarios. The effective lifetime of the lantern-type MOCs varies over an order of magnitude depending on the steric bulk proximal to the metal nodes with lifetimes of the cages ranging from tens of minutes to several hours. The bulk of the coordinating solvents likewise reduces the rate of ligand exchange, and thus yields longer-lived species. Understanding this subtle effect has implications for controlling the stability of complex assemblies in competitive environments with implications for guest release and application.

Supramolecular Coordination Complexes for Synergistic Cancer Therapy

Supramolecular coordination complexes (SCCs) are predictable and size-tunable supramolecular self-assemblies constructed through directional coordination bonds between readily available organic ligands and metallic receptors. Based on planar and 3D structures, SCCs can be mainly divided into two categories: metallacycles (e.g., rhomboidal, triangular, rectangular, and hexagonal) and metallacages (e.g., tetrahedral, hexahedral, and dodecahedral). The directional coordination bonds enable the efficient formation of metallacycles and metallacages with well-defined architectures and geometries. SCCs exhibit several advantages, including good directionality, strong interaction force, tunable modularity, and good solution processability, making them highly attractive for biomedical applications, especially in cellular imaging and cancer therapy. Compared with their molecular precursors, SCCs demonstrate enhanced cellular uptake and a strengthened tumor accumulation effect, owing to their inherently charged structures. These properties and the chemotherapeutic potential inherent to organic platinum complexes have promoted their widespread application in antitumor therapy. Furthermore, the defined structures of SCCs, achieved via the design modification of assembly elements and introduction of different functional groups, enable them to combat malignant tumors through multipronged treatment modalities. Because the development of cancer-treatment methodologies integrated in clinics has evolved from single-modality chemotherapy to synergistic multimodal therapy, the development of functional SCCs for synergistic cancer therapy is crucial. While some pioneering reviews have explored the bioapplications of SCCs, often categorized by a specific function or focusing on the specific metal or ligand types, a comprehensive exploration of their synergistic multifunctionality is a critical gap in the current literature.In this Account, we focus on platinum-based SCCs and their applications in cancer therapy. While other metals, such as Pd-, Rh-, Ru-, and Ir-based SCCs, have been explored for cancer therapy by Therrien and Casini et al., platinum-based SCCs have garnered significant interest, owing to their unique advantages in antitumor therapy. These platinum-based SCCs, which enhance antitumor efficacy, are considered prominent candidates for cancer therapies owing to their desirable properties, such as potent antitumor activity, exceptionally low systemic toxicity, active tumor-targeting ability, and enhanced cellular uptake. Furthermore, diverse diagnostic and therapeutic modalities (e.g., chemotherapy, photothermal therapy, and photodynamic therapy) can be integrated into a single platform based on platinum-based SCCs for cancer therapy. Consequently, herein, we summarize our recent research on platinum-based SCCs for synergistic cancer therapy with particular emphasis on the cooperative interplay between different therapeutic methods. In the Conclusions section, we present the key advancements achieved on the basis of our research findings and propose future directions that may significantly impact the field.

Boron-Nitrogen-Embedded Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon-Based Controllable Hierarchical Self-Assemblies through Synergistic Cation-π and C-H···π Interactions for Bifunctional Photo- and Electro-Catalysis

Boron-Nitrogen-embedded polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (BN-PAHs) as novel π-conjugated systems have attracted immense attention owing to their superior optoelectronic properties. However, constructing long-range ordered supramolecular assemblies based on BN-PAHs remains conspicuously scarce, primarily attributed to the constraints arising from coordinating multiple noncovalent interactions and the intrinsic characteristics of BN-PAHs, which hinder precise control over delicate self-assembly processes. Herein, we achieve the successful formation of BN-PAH-based controllable hierarchical assemblies through synergistically leveraged cation-π and C-H···π interactions. By carefully adjusting the solvent conditions in two progressive assembly hierarchies, the one-dimensional (1D) supramolecular assemblies with "rigid yet flexible" assembled units are first formed by cation-π interactions, and then they can be gradually fused into two-dimensional (2D) structures under specific C-H···π interactions, thus realizing the precise control of the transformation process from BN-PAH-based 1D primary structures to 2D higher-order assemblies. The resulting 2D-BNSA, characterized by enhanced electrical conductivity and ordered 2D layered structure, provides anchoring and dispersion sites for loading two appropriate nanocatalysts, thus facilitating the efficient photocatalytic CO2 reduction (with a remarkable CH4 evolution rate of 938.7 μmol g-1 h-1) and electrocatalytic acetylene semihydrogenation (reaching a Faradaic efficiency for ethylene up to 98.5%).

Strategies to address key challenges of metallacycle/metallacage-based supramolecular coordination complexes in biomedical applications

Owing to their capacity for dynamically linking two or more functional molecules, supramolecular coordination complexes (SCCs), exemplified by two-dimensional (2D) metallacycles and three-dimensional (3D) metallacages, have gained increasing significance in biomedical applications. However, their inherent hydrophobicity and self-assembly driven by heavy metal ions present common challenges in their applications. These challenges can be overcome by enhancing the aqueous solubility and in vivo circulation stability of SCCs, alongside minimizing their side effects during treatment. Addressing these challenges is crucial for advancing the fundamental research of SCCs and their subsequent clinical translation. In this review, drawing on extensive contemporary research, we offer a thorough and systematic analysis of the strategies employed by SCCs to surmount these prevalent yet pivotal obstacles. Additionally, we explore further potential challenges and prospects for the broader application of SCCs in the biomedical field.

Programming peptide-oligonucleotide nano-assembly for engineering of neoantigen vaccine with potent immunogenicity

Background: Neoantigen nanovaccine has been recognized as a promising treatment modality for personalized cancer immunotherapy. However, most current nanovaccines are carrier-dependent and the manufacturing process is complicated, resulting in potential safety concerns and suboptimal codelivery of neoantigens and adjuvants to antigen-presenting cells (APCs). Methods: Here we report a facile and general methodology for nanoassembly of peptide and oligonucleotide by programming neoantigen peptide with a short cationic module at N-terminus to prepare nanovaccine. The programmed peptide can co-assemble with CpG oligonucleotide (TLR9 agonist) into monodispersed nanostructures without the introduction of artificial carrier. Results: We demonstrate that the engineered nanovaccine promoted the codelivery of neoantigen peptides and adjuvants to lymph node-residing APCs and instigated potent neoantigen-specific T-cell responses, eliciting neoantigen-specific antitumor immune responses with negligible systemic toxicity. Furthermore, the antitumor T-cell immunity is profoundly potentiated when combined with anti-PD-1 therapy, leading to significant inhibition or even complete regression of established melanoma and MC-38 colon tumors. Conclusions: Collectively, this work demonstrates the feasibility and effectiveness of personalized cancer nanovaccine preparation with high immunogenicity and good biosafety by programming neoantigen peptide for nanoassembly with oligonucleotides without the aid of artificial carrier.

Recent Developments of Fluorescence Sensors Constructed from Pillar[n]arene-Based Supramolecular Architectures Containing Metal Coordination Sites

The field of fluorescence sensing, leveraging various supramolecular self-assembled architectures constructed from macrocyclic pillar[n]arenes, has seen significant advancement in recent decades. This review comprehensively discusses, for the first time, the recent innovations in the synthesis and self-assembly of pillar[n]arene-based supramolecular architectures (PSAs) containing metal coordination sites, along with their practical applications and prospects in fluorescence sensing. Integrating hydrophobic and electron-rich cavities of pillar[n]arenes into these supramolecular structures endows the entire system with self-assembly behavior and stimulus responsiveness. Employing the host-guest interaction strategy and complementary coordination forces, PSAs exhibiting both intelligent and controllable properties are successfully constructed. This provides a broad horizon for advancing fluorescence sensors capable of detecting environmental pollutants. This review aims to establish a solid foundation for the future development of fluorescence sensing applications utilizing PSAs. Additionally, current challenges and future perspectives in this field are discussed.

Hierarchical Self-Assembly of Curved Aromatics: From Donor-Acceptor Porphyrins to Triply Periodic Minimal Surfaces

A saddle-shaped π-extended zinc porphyrin containing a peripheral pyridyl ligand undergoes quantitative self-assembly into a cyclic trimer. The trimer has a prismatic structure with negatively curved side walls, which promote the formation of supramolecular organic frameworks stabilized by dispersion interactions. The first framework type, UWr-1, has the npo topology, with a hexagonal structure analogous to the Schwartz H triply periodic minimal surface. Co-crystallization of the trimer with either C60 and C70 produces the isomorphous cubic UWr-2 and UWr-3 phases, characterized by the ctn network topology and a structural relationship to the Fischer-Koch minimal surface S. All three phases contain complex labyrinths of solvent-filled channels, corresponding to very large probe-accessible volumes (68 % to 76 %). The UWr-2 network could be partly desolvated while retaining its long range dimensional order, indicating remarkable strength of the dispersion interactions in the crystal. A theoretical analysis of noncovalent interactions shows the role of geometrical matching between the negatively curved porphyrin units and positively curved fullerenes.

Construction and Hierarchical Self-Assembly of a Supramolecular Metal-Carbene Complex with Multifunctional Units

Hierarchical combinations involving metal-ligand interactions and host-guest interactions can consolidate building blocks with unique functions into material properties. This study reports the construction and hierarchical self-assembly of multifunctional trinuclear AuI tricarbene complex containing three crown ether units and three ferrocene units. Host-guest interactions between the multifunctional trinuclear AuI tricarbene complex and organic ammonium salts were investigated, revealing that crown ether-based host-guest interactions can effectively regulate the electrochemical properties of the complex. Utilizing bisammonium salt as the cross-linker and multifunctional trinuclear AuI tricarbene complex as the core, a stimuli-responsive and self-healing supramolecular gel with different functional units was obtained.

Hierarchical 2D honeycomb-like network from barium-seamed nanocapsules

We report on a two-dimensional hexagonal "honeycomb" network comprising barium-seamed metal-organic nanocapsules involving a hexameric assembly of pyrogallol[4]arene ligands. The incorporated barium ions act as spacers to generate a solvent-accessible void, hierarchical self-assembly having an individual void volume near 13 000 Å3. This work illustrates the surprising chemistry that remains to be discovered by integrating large or classically non-reactive metal ions within supramolecular assemblies, networks, and organic nanocapsules.

Mechanistic insights into an NH4OAc-promoted imine dance in Rh-catalysed multicomponent double C-H annulations through an N-retention/exchange dual channel

Developing new and understanding multicomponent reactions (MCRs) is an appealing but challenging task. Herein, Rh(iii)-catalyzed multicomponent double C-H annulations of cyclic diimines (or diketones and acetone), alkynes, and ammonium acetate to assemble functionalized 1,1'-biisoquinolines and C-bridged 1,1'-bisisoquinolines with controllable 14N/15N editing in one shot has been developed. Through a combination of isotopic-labeling (2H, 18O, and 15N) experiments, crystallography, and time-dependent ESI-MS, the reaction process was studied in detail. Ammonium acetate accounts for two rounds of Hofmann elimination and iminization, thus leading to an unprecedented imine dance, cyclic imine → N-alkenyl imine → NH imine. The N-alkenyl imine can immediately guide a C-H annulation (N-retention channel), and some of it is converted into NH-imine to trigger another annulation (N-exchange channel). The channels and 15N ratios can be regulated by the reaction mode and acidity. Moreover, the resulting 1,1'-biisoquinolines are a privileged ligand scaffold which is exemplified herein by a hydrazine-iodine exchange reaction to form drug-like benzo[c]cinnolines.

Controllable hierarchical self-assembly: systematic study forming metallosupramolecular frameworks on the basis of helical beta-oligoamides

Self-assembly is a key guiding principle for the design of complex nanostructures. Substituted beta oligoamides offer versatile building blocks that can have inherent folding characteristics, offering geometrically defined functionalities that can specifically bind and assemble with predefined morphological characteristics. In this work hierarchical self-assembly is implemented based on metal coordinating helical beta-oligoamides crosslinked with transition metals selected for their favourable coordination geometries, Fe2+, Cu2+, Ni2+, Co2+, Zn2+, and two metalates, MoO42-, and WO42-. The oligoamide Ac-β3Aβ3Vβ3S-αHαHαH-β3Aβ3Vβ3A (3H) was designed to allow crosslinking via three distinct faces of the helical unit, with a possibility of forming three dimensional framework structures. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) confirmed the formation of specific morphologies that differ characteristically with each metal. X-Ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) results reveal that the metal centres can be reduced in the final structures, confirming strong chemical interaction. Time of flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) confirmed the spatial distribution of metals within the self-assembled networks, also revealing molecular fragments that confirm coordination to histidine and carboxyl moieties. The metalates MoO42- and WO42- were also able to induce the formation of specific superstructure morphologies. It was observed that assembly with either of nickel, copper, and molybdate form thin films, while cobalt, zinc, and tungstate produced specific three dimensional networks of oligoamides. Iron was found to form both a thin film and a complex hierarchical assembly with the 3H simultaneously. The design of the 3H substituted beta oligoamide to readily form metallosupramolecular frameworks was demonstrated with a range of metals and metalates with a degree of control over layer thicknesses as a function of the metal/metalate. The results validate and broaden the metallosupramolecular framework concept and establish a platform technology for the design of functional thin layer materials.

A Biodegradable Nucleotide Coordination Polymer for Enhanced NSCLC Therapy in Combination with Metabolic Modulation

Epidermal growth factor receptor tyrosine kinase inhibitors (EGFR-TKIs) in the treatment of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) still face challenges of acquired resistance and non-negligible side effects. To overcome these limitations, a biodegradable coordination polymer using guanine deoxynucleotide and ferrous iron (dGNP) is developed for targeted delivery of EGFR-TKIs. dGNPs can efficiently target nucleoside transporters in tumor cells that are regulated by fasting-mimicking diet (FMD). Meanwhile, FMD can augment the therapeutic efficacy of EGFR-TKIs by suppressing EGFR tyrosine kinase phosphorylation and related downstream pathways. In vivo results demonstrate that EGFR-TKIs-laden dGNPs combined with FMD treatment exhibit superior antitumor efficacy and reduced side effect. This study provides an innovative approach to enhance the therapeutic efficacy of EGFR-TKIs through nucleotide nanocarrier and metabolic modulation.

Supramolecular Architectures Bearing Half-Sandwich Iridium- or Rhodium-Based Carboranes: Design, Synthesis, and Applications

The utilization of carboranes in supramolecular chemistry has attracted considerable attention. The unique spatial configuration and weak interaction forces of carboranes can help to explore the properties of supramolecular complexes, particularly via host-guest chemistry. Additionally, certain difficulties encountered in carborane development─such as controlled B-H bond activation─can be overcome by judiciously selecting metal centers and their adjacent ligands. However, few studies are being conducted in this nascent research area. With advances in this field, novel carborane-based supramolecular complexes will likely be prepared, structurally characterized, and intrinsically investigated. To expedite these efforts, we present major findings from recent studies, including π-π interactions, host-guest associations, and steric effects, which have been leveraged to implement a regioselective process for activating B(2,9)-, B(2,8)-, and B(2,7)-H bonds of para-carboranes and B(4,7)-H bonds of ortho-carboranes. Future studies should clarify the unique weak interactions of carboranes and their potential for enhancing the utility of supramolecular complexes. Although carboranes exhibit several unique weak interactions (such as dihydrogen-bond [Bδ+-Hδ-···Hδ+-Cδ-], Bδ+-Hδ-···M+, and Bδ+-Hδ-···π interactions), the manner in which they can be utilized remains unclear. Supramolecular complexes, particularly those based on host-guest chemistry, can be utilized as a platform for demonstrating potential applications of these weak interactions. Owing to the importance of alkane separation, applications related to the recognition and separation of alkane isomers via dihydrogen-bond interactions are primarily summarized. Advances in the research of unique weak interactions in carboranes will certainly lead to more possibilities for supramolecular chemistry.

Double Cation-π Directed Two-Dimensional Metallacycle-Based Hierarchical Self-Assemblies for Dual-Mode Catalysis

Hierarchical self-assembly of Pt(II) metallacycles for the construction of functional materials has received considerable research interest, owing to their potential to meet increasing complexity and functionality demands while being based on well-defined scaffolds. However, the fabrication of long-range-ordered Pt(II) metallacycle-based two-dimensional hierarchical self-assemblies (2D HSAs) remains a challenge, primarily because of the limitations of conventional orthogonal noncovalent interaction (NCI) motifs and the intrinsic characteristics of Pt(II) metallacycles, making the delicate self-assembly processes difficult to control. Herein, we prepare well-regulated Pt(II)-metallacycle-based 2D HSAs through a directed strategy involving double cation-π interactions derived from C3-symmetric hexagonal Pt(II) metallacycles and C2-symmetric sodium phenate monomers. Spatially confined arrays of planar Pt(II) metallacycles and the selective growth of self-assemblies at desired locations are achieved by employing strong cation-π driving forces with well-defined directionality as the second orthogonal NCI, realizing the bottom-up, three-stage construction of Pt(II)-metallacycle-based 2D HSAs. The resultant 2D HSAs are applied as dual-mode catalysis platforms, which are loaded with two different nanocatalysts, one promoting catalytic oxidation and the other promoting photocatalytic reduction.

pH-Activatable copper-axitinib coordinated multifunctional nanoparticles for synergistic chemo-chemodynamic therapy against aggressive cancers

Chemodynamic therapy (CDT) is an emerging oncological treatment that eliminates tumor cells by generating lethal hydroxyl radicals (˙OH) through Fenton or Fenton-like reactions within tumors. However, the effectiveness of CDT is limited by the overexpression of glutathione (GSH) and low reaction efficiency in the tumor microenvironment (TME). To address these challenges and enhance tumor treatment, we developed a novel pH-activatable metal ion-drug coordinated nanoparticle (Cu-AXB NPs) system, incorporating a CDT agent (Cu2+) and a chemotherapeutic agent (axitinib, AXB). The obtained Cu-AXB NPs exhibited exceptional characteristics, including ultrahigh drug loading capacity (87.55%) and an average size of 180 nm. These nanoparticles also demonstrated excellent plasma stability and pH-responsive drug release, enabling prolonged circulation in the bloodstream and targeted therapy at weakly acidic tumor sites. Upon release, AXB acted as a chemotherapeutic agent, effectively eliminating tumor cells, while Cu2+ ions were reduced to Cu+ by GSH, further generating toxic ˙OH with hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) for CDT through a Fenton-like reaction. Additionally, the Cu-AXB NPs efficiently disrupted the copper metabolic balance and increased the intracellular Cu content, further amplifying the therapeutic impact of CDT. In vitro studies assessing cytotoxicity and apoptosis confirmed the superior tumor cell-killing efficacy of the Cu-AXB NPs. This enhanced efficacy can be attributed to the synergistic effect of CDT and chemotherapy. Moreover, the Cu-AXB NPs exhibited excellent tumor targeting capabilities, resulting in significant tumor inhibition (77.53% inhibition) while maintaining favorable biocompatibility in tumor-bearing mice. In conclusion, this study presents a promising and safe strategy for cancer therapy by combining CDT with chemotherapy, offering a potential breakthrough in the field of oncology.

Aqueous coordination polymer complexes: From colloidal assemblies to bulk materials

1-dimensional (1D) coordination polymers refer to the macromolecules that have metal ions incorporated in their pendent groups or main chain through metal-binding ligand groups. They have intrinsic advantages over traditional polymers to regulate the polymer structures and functions owing to the nature of the metal-ligand bond. Consequently, they have great potential for the development of smart and functional structures and materials and therapeutic agents. Water-soluble 1D coordination polymers and assemblies are an important subtype of coordination polymers with distinctive interests for demanding applications in aqueous systems, such as biological and medical applications. This review highlights the recent progress and research achievements in the design and use of water-soluble 1D coordination polymers and assemblies. The overview covers the design and structure control of 1D coordination polymers, their colloidal assemblies, including nanoparticles, nanofibers, micelles and vesicles, and fabricated bulk materials such as membraneless liquid condensates, security ink, hydrogel actuators, and smart fabrics. Finally, we discuss the potential applications of several of these coordination polymeric structures and materials and give an outlook on the field of aqueous coordination polymers.

Engineering Two-Dimensional Multilevel Supramolecular Assemblies from a Bifunctional Ligand on Au(111)

Herein, we demonstrate the supramolecular assemblies from a bifunctional ligand on Au(111), towards engineering two-dimensional (metal-) organic multilevel nanostructures. The bifunctional ligand employed, including two Br atoms and one carboxylic terminal, offers multiple bonding motifs with different configurations and binding energies. These bonding motifs are highly self-selective and self-recognizable, and thus afford the formation of subunits that contribute to engineering multilevel self-assemblies. Our scanning tunneling microscopy experiments, in combination with the density functional theory calculations, revealed various hydrogen, halogen and alkali-carboxylate bonding motifs dictating the different levels of the assemblies. The multilevel assembly protocol based on a judicious choice of multiple bonding motifs guarantees a deliberate control of surface-confined (metal-) organic nanostructures. Our findings may present new opportunities for the fabrication of complex two-dimensional (metal-) organic nanostructures with potential in applications of functionally diverse nanomaterials.

Elucidation of the key role of isomerization in the self-assembly and luminescence properties of AIEgens

Due to the hierarchical nature of the self-assembly process, it is effective to control assembled nanostructures by tuning the spatial configurations of the building blocks through Z-/E-isomerization. A pair of AIE stereoisomers termed (Z)-/(E)-TPE-UPy was reported with different self-assembly mechanisms, morphologies and luminescence properties. In this study, we present a multiscale modeling combining MD simulations, hybrid QM/MM calculations and the PCM model, to systematically clarify the molecular configuration-molecular assembly-photophysical property relationship of (Z)-/(E)-TPE-UPy. Our study shows that (Z)-TPE-UPy follows a concentration-dependent ring-chain polymerization mechanism. At low concentration, (Z)-TPE-UPy tends to form ring-like (Z)-close-dimers with all H-bond sites occupied, while at high concentration, the H-bond backbone in the chain-like structures is more planar and stronger, making the zig-zag chain-like conformations more favorable. For the (E)-isomer, the H-bond backbone is quite planar and rigid, which makes it linearly elongate one-by-one at the whole range of concentrations via the isodesmic polymerization mechanism. (Z)-TPE-UPy oligomers exhibit large flexibility and diverse conformations, leading to sharply enhanced viscosity at high concentration in experiments. Moreover, the fluorescence spectrum of (Z)-/(E)-TPE-UPy aggregate is conformation-dependent and the enhanced emission in the aggregated state is attributed to the restriction of the low-frequency intramolecular rotations of the phenyl rings and the distortion of the CC plane, as well as the reduction of electron-vibration couplings. Our work not only offers valuable insights into the key role of stereoisomerism in assembled morphologies and luminescence properties, but also provides a theoretical basis for the rational design of new building blocks based on stereoisomers.

BODIPY as a Multifunctional Theranostic Reagent in Biomedicine: Self-Assembly, Properties, and Applications

The use of boron dipyrromethene (BODIPY) in biomedicine is reviewed. To open, its synthesis and regulatory strategies are summarized, and inspiring cutting-edge work in post-functionalization strategies is highlighted. A brief overview of assembly model of BODIPY is then provided: BODIPY is introduced as a promising building block for the formation of single- and multicomponent self-assembled systems, including nanostructures suitable for aqueous environments, thereby showing the great development potential of supramolecular assembly in biomedicine applications. The frontier progress of BODIPY in biomedical application is thereafter described, supported by examples of the frontiers of biomedical applications of BODIPY-containing smart materials: it mainly involves the application of materials based on BODIPY building blocks and their assemblies in fluorescence bioimaging, photoacoustic imaging, disease treatment including photodynamic therapy, photothermal therapy, and immunotherapy. Lastly, not only the current status of the BODIPY family in the biomedical field but also the challenges worth considering are summarized. At the same time, insights into the future development prospects of biomedically applicable BODIPY are provided.

Achieving higher hierarchical structures by cooperative assembly of tripeptides with reverse sequences

Hierarchical self-assembly based on peptides in nature is a multi-component interaction process, providing a broad platform for various bionanotechnological applications. However, the study of controlling the hierarchical structure transformation via the cooperation rules of different sequences is still rarely reported. Herein, we report a novel strategy of achieving higher hierarchical structures through cooperative self-assembly of hydrophobic tripeptides with reverse sequences. We unexpectedly found that Nap-FVY and its reverse sequence Nap-YVF self-assembled into nanospheres, respectively, while their mixture formed nanofibers, obviously exhibiting a low-to-high hierarchical structure transformation. Further, this phenomenon was demonstrated by the other two collocations. The cooperation of Nap-VYF and Nap-FYV afforded the transformation from nanofibers to twisted nanoribbons, and the cooperation of Nap-VFY and Nap-YFV realized the transformation from nanoribbons to nanotubes. The reason may be that the cooperative systems in the anti-parallel β-sheet conformation created more hydrogen bond interactions and in-register π-π stacking, promoting a more compact molecular arrangement. This work provides a handy approach for controlled hierarchical assembly and the development of various functional bionanomaterials.

Rheological dynamics and structural characteristics of supramolecular assemblies of β-cyclodextrin and sulfonic surfactants

Cyclodextrins are highly functional compounds with a hydrophobic cavity capable of forming supramolecular inclusion complexes with various classes of molecules including surfactants. The resultant rich nanostructures and their dynamics are an interesting research problem in the area of soft condensed matter and related applications. Herein, we report novel dynamical supramolecular assemblies based on the complexation of β-cyclodextrin with 3 different sulfonic surfactants, which are sodium hexadecylsulfate, sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate, and myristyl sulfobetaine. It was observed that a β-cyclodextrin : surfactant/2 : 1 molar ratio was ideal for inducing axial growth and imparting large viscosities in the suspensions. Such complexation processes were accompanied by intriguing nanostructural phase behaviors and rheological properties that were very sensitive to the molecular architecture of sulfonic surfactants. The presence of an amino group in the head group of the surfactant allowed for large viscosities that reached 2.4 × 10⁴ Pa s which exhibited gel-like behavior. In contrast, smaller viscosity values with a lower consistency index were observed when a bulky aromatic ring was present instead. DIC microscopy was used to visually probe the microstructure of the systems with respect to sulfonate molecular architecture. Additionally, surface tension measurements, and FTIR and NMR spectroscopies were used to gain insights into the nature of interactions that lead to the complexation and nanostructural characteristics. Finally, mechanics correlating the supramolecular morphologies to the rheological properties were proposed.

Construction and Hierarchical Self-Assembly of Multifunctional Coordination Cages with Triangular Metal-Metal-Bonded Units

Herein, a series of face-capped (Tr₂M₃)₄L₄ (Tr = cycloheptatrienyl cationic ring; M = metal; L = organosulfur ligand) tetrahedral cages 1-3 functionalized with 12 appended crown ether moieties were designed and synthesized. The reversible binding of ammonium cations with peripheral crown ether moieties to adjust internal guest-binding was realized. Combination of a bisammonium linker and cage 3 led to the formation of a supramolecular gel SPN1 via host-guest interactions between the crown ether moieties and ammonium salts. The obtained supramolecular gel exhibited multiple-stimuli responsiveness, injectability, and excellent self-healing properties and could be further developed to a SPN1-based drug delivery system. In addition, the storage modulus of SPN1 was 20 times higher than that of the model gel without Pd-Pd bonded blocks, and SPN1 had better self-healing properties compared with the latter, demonstrating the importance of such cages in improving mechanical strength without losing the dynamic properties of the material. The cytotoxicity in vitro of the drug-loaded (doxorubicin or methotrexate) SPN1 was significantly improved compared to that of free drugs.

Structural Evolution and Properties of Praseodymium Antimony Oxochlorides Based on a Chain-like Tertiary Building Unit

Unveiling the structural evolution of single-crystalline compounds based on certain building units may help greatly in guiding the design of complex structures. Herein, a series of praseodymium antimony oxohalide crystals have been isolated under solvothermal conditions via adjusting the solvents used, that is, [HN(CH2CH3)3][FeII(2,2′-bpy)3][Pr4Sb12O18Cl15]·EtOH (1) (2,2′-bpy = 2,2′-bipyridine), [HN(CH2CH3)3][FeII(2,2′-bpy)3]2[Pr4Sb12O18Cl14)2Cl]·N(CH2CH3)3·2H2O (2), and (H3O)[Pr4Sb12O18Cl12.5(TEOA)0.5]·2.5EtOH (3) (TEOA = mono-deprotonated triethanolamine anion). Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that all the three structures feature an anionic zig-zag chain of [Pr4Sb12O18Cl15−x]n as the tertiary building unit (TBU), which is formed by interconnections of praseodymium antimony oxochloride clusters (denoted as {Pr4Sb12}) as secondary building units. Interestingly, different arrangements or linkages of chain-like TBUs result in one-dimensional, two-dimensional layered, and three-dimensional structures of 1, 2, and 3, respectively, thus demonstrating clearly the structural evolution of metal oxohalide crystals. The title compounds have been characterized by elemental analysis, powder X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, and UV-Vis spectroscopy, and the photodegradation for methyl blue in an aqueous solution of compound 1 has been preliminarily studied. This work offers a way to deeply understand the assembly process of intricate lanthanide-antimony(III) oxohalide structures at the atomic level.

Fascinating isomeric covalent organic frameworks

Isomeric covalent organic frameworks possessing the same chemical constitutions but different atomic arrangement structures and physicochemical properties are fascinating branches of covalent organic frameworks (COFs). However, the rational design and targeted synthesis of isomeric COFs remain conundrums, so the investigation of isomeric COFs is still in a fledging period. According to the diversity of frameworks, positional isomers with similar structures and framework isomers having distinct constructions are the main existing subspecies of isomeric COFs. In this review, we focus on the research progress and substantial achievements in this fascinating embranchment and systematically summarize and highlight the design principles of both positional isomeric and framework isomeric COFs, which will potentially facilitate further exploitation and investigation of novel isomeric COFs. The application and structure-property relationship of these isomeric COFs have been briefly introduced. Moreover, key constraints of current isomeric COFs and further advancement of this promising field are proposed and anticipated.

Advanced supramolecular design for direct ink writing of soft materials

The exciting advancements in 3D-printing of soft materials are changing the landscape of materials development and fabrication. Among various 3D-printers that are designed for soft materials fabrication, the direct ink writing (DIW) system is particularly attractive for chemists and materials scientists due to the mild fabrication conditions, compatibility with a wide range of organic and inorganic materials, and the ease of multi-materials 3D-printing. Inks for DIW need to possess suitable viscoelastic properties to allow for smooth extrusion and be self-supportive after printing, but molecularly facilitating 3D printability to functional materials remains nontrivial. While supramolecular binding motifs have been increasingly used for 3D-printing, these inks are largely optimized empirically for DIW. Hence, this review aims to establish a clear connection between the molecular understanding of the supramolecularly bound motifs and their viscoelastic properties at bulk. Herein, extrudable (but not self-supportive) and 3D-printable (self-supportive) polymeric materials that utilize noncovalent interactions, including hydrogen bonding, host-guest inclusion, metal-ligand coordination, micro-crystallization, and van der Waals interaction, have been discussed in detail. In particular, the rheological distinctions between extrudable and 3D-printable inks have been discussed from a supramolecular design perspective. Examples shown in this review also highlight the exciting macroscale functions amplified from the molecular design. Challenges associated with the hierarchical control and characterization of supramolecularly designed DIW inks are also outlined. The perspective of utilizing supramolecular binding motifs in soft materials DIW printing has been discussed. This review serves to connect researchers across disciplines to develop innovative solutions that connect top-down 3D-printing and bottom-up supramolecular design to accelerate the development of 3D-print soft materials for a sustainable future.

Targeted Synthesis of Isomeric Naphthalene-Based 2D Kagome Covalent Organic Frameworks

Targeted synthesis of kagome (kgm) topologic 2D covalent organic frameworks remains challenging, presumably due to the severe dependence on building units and synthetic conditions. Herein, two isomeric "two-in-one" monomers with different lengths of substituted arms based on naphthalene core (p-Naph and m-Naph) are elaborately designed and utilized for the defined synthesis of isomeric kgm Naph-COFs. The two isomeric frameworks exhibit splendid crystallinity and showcase the same chemical composition and topologic structure with, however, different pore channels. Interestingly, C₆₀ is able to uniformly be encapsulated into the triangle channels of m-Naph-COF via in situ incorporation method, while not the isomeric p-Naph-COF, likely due to the different pore structures of the two isomeric COFs. The resulting stable C₆₀ @m-Naph-COF composite exhibits much higher photoconductivity than the m-Naph-COF owing to charge transfer between the conjugated skeletons and C₆₀ guests.

Single-Crystal Superstructures via Hierarchical Assemblies of Giant Rubik's Cubes as Tertiary Building Units

Intricate superstructures possess unusual structural features and promising applications. The preparation of superstructures with single-crystalline nature are conducive to understanding the structure-property relationship, however, remains an intriguing challenge. Herein we put forward a new hierarchical assembly strategy towards rational and precise construction of intricate single-crystal superstructures. Firstly, two unprecedented superclusters in Rubik's cube's form with a size of ≈2×2×2 nm³ are constructed by aggregation of eight {Pr₄ Sb₁₂ } oxohalide clusters as secondary building units (SBUs). Then, the Rubik's cubes further act as isolable tertiary building units (TBUs) to assemble diversified single-crystal superstructures. Importantly, intermediate assembly states are captured, which helps illustrate the evolution of TBU-based superstructures and thus provides a profound understanding of the assembly process of superstructures at the atomic level.

Photoresponsive Supramolecular Polymers: From Light-Controlled Small Molecules to Smart Materials

Photoresponsive supramolecular polymers are well-organized assemblies based on highly oriented and reversible noncovalent interactions containing photosensitive molecules as (co-)monomers. They have attracted increasing interest in smart materials and dynamic systems with precisely controllable functions, such as light-driven soft actuators, photoresponsive fluorescent anticounterfeiting and light-triggered electronic devices. The present review discusses light-activated molecules used in photoresponsive supramolecular polymers with their main photo-induced changes, e.g., geometry, dipole moment, and chirality. Based on these distinct changes, supramolecular polymers formed by light-activated molecules exhibit photoresponsive disassembly and reassembly. As a consequence, photo-induced supramolecular polymerization, "depolymerization," and regulation of the lengths and topologies are observed. Moreover, the light-controlled functions of supramolecular polymers, such as actuation, emission, and chirality transfer along length scales, are highlighted. Furthermore, a perspective on challenges and future opportunities is presented. Besides the challenge of moving from harmful UV light to visible/near IR light avoiding fatigue, and enabling biomedical applications, future opportunities include light-controlled supramolecular actuators with helical motion, light-modulated information transmission, optically recyclable materials, and multi-stimuli-responsive supramolecular systems.

Cation-Induced Fibrillation of Microbial Glycolipid Biosurfactant Probed by Ion-Resolved In Situ SAXS

Biological amphiphiles are molecules with a rich phase behavior. Micellar, vesicular, and even fibrillar phases can be found for the same molecule by applying a change in pH or by selecting the appropriate metal ion. The rich phase behavior paves the way toward a broad class of soft materials, from carriers to hydrogels. The present work contributes to understanding the fibrillation of a microbial glycolipid, glucolipid G-C18:1, produced by Starmerella bombicola ΔugtB1 and characterized by a micellar phase at alkaline pH and a vesicular phase at acidic pH. Fibrillation and prompt hydrogelation is triggered by adding either alkaline earth, Ca²⁺, or transition metal, Ag⁺, Fe²⁺, Al³⁺, ions to a G-C18:1 micellar solution. A specifically designed apparatus coupled to a synchrotron SAXS beamline allows the performing of simultaneous cation- and pH-resolved in situ monitoring of the morphological evolution from spheroidal micelles to crystalline fibers, when Ca²⁺ is employed, or to wormlike aggregates, when Fe²⁺ or Al³⁺ solutions are employed. The fast reactivity of Ag⁺ and the crystallinity of Ca²⁺-induced fibers suggest that fibrillation is driven by direct metal-ligand interactions, while the shape transition from spheroidal to elongated micelles with Fe²⁺ or Al³⁺ rather suggest charge screening between the lipid and the hydroxylated cation species.

Supramolecular Combination Cancer Therapy Based on Macrocyclic Supramolecular Materials

Supramolecular combination therapy adopts supramolecular materials to design intelligent drug delivery systems with different strategies for cancer treatments. Thereinto, macrocyclic supramolecular materials play a crucial role in encapsulating anticancer drugs to improve anticancer efficiency and decrease toxicity towards normal tissue by host-guest interaction. In general, chemotherapy is still common therapy for solid tumors in clinics. However, supramolecular combination therapy can overcome the limitations of the traditional single-drug chemotherapy in the laboratory findings. In this review, we summarized the combination chemotherapy, photothermal chemotherapy, and gene chemotherapy based on macrocyclic supramolecular materials. Finally, the application prospects in supramolecular combination therapy are discussed.

Fabrication of Multilayered Two-Dimensional Micelles and Fibers by Controlled Self-Assembly of Rod-Coil Block Copolymers

Fabricating hierarchical nanomaterials by self-assembly of rod-coil block copolymers attracts great interest. However, the key factors that affect the formation of the hierarchical nanomaterials have not been thoroughly researched. Herein, we have synthesized two diblock copolymers composed of poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) and polyethylene glycol (PEG). Through a heating, cooling, and aging process, a series of multilayered hierarchical micelles and fibers were prepared in alcoholic solutions. The transition from fibers to hierarchical micelles are strictly influenced by the strength of the π-π stacking interaction, the PEG chain length, and solvent. In isopropanol, the P3HT₂₂-b-PEG₄₃ could self-assemble into hierarchical micelles composed of several two-dimensional (2D) laminar layers, driven by the π-π stacking interaction and van der Waals force. The P3HT₂₂-b-PEG₄₃ could not self-assemble into well-defined nanostructures in methanol and ethanol, but could self-assemble into fibers in isobutanol. However, the P3HT₂₂-b-PEG₁₁₃ with a longer corona block only self-assembled into fibers in four alcoholic solutions, due to the increase in dissolving capacity and steric hindrance. The sizes and the size distributions of the nanostructures both increased with the increase in polymer concentration and the decrease in solvent polarity. This study shows a method to fabricate the hierarchical micelles.

A self-complementary macrocycle by a dual interaction system

Self-complementary assembly is one of the most promising phenomena for the formation of discrete assemblies, e.g., proteins and capsids. However, self-complementary assembly based on multiple host-guest systems has been scarcely reported due to the difficulty in controlling each assembly. Herein, we report a dual interaction system in which the key assembly direction is well regulated by both π-π stacking and hydrogen bonding to construct a self-complementary macrocycle. Continuous host-guest behavior of anthracene-based molecular tweezers during crystallization leads to successful construction of a cyclic hexamer, which is reminiscent of Kekulé’s monkey model. Furthermore, the cyclic hexamer in a tight and triple-layered fashion shows hierarchical assembly into cuboctahedron and rhombohedral assemblies in the presence of trifluoroacetic acid. Our findings would be potentially one of metal-free strategies for constructing anthracene-based supramolecular assemblies with higher-order structure.

In nature, HIV capsid consists of single class of protein unit by self-complementarity. Here, the authors find that a molecular tweezer forms a cyclic hexamer by its continuous host-guest behavior, and constructs a large cuboctahedron by hierarchical assembly.

Positive Cooperativity Induced by Interstrand Interactions in Silver(I) Complexes with α,α′‐Diimine Ligands

The allosteric positive cooperativity accompanying the formation of compact [Cu^I(α,α′‐diimine)₂]⁺ building blocks contributed to the historically efficient synthesis of metal‐containing catenates and knotted assemblies. However, its limited magnitude can easily be overcome by the negative chelate cooperativity that controls the overall formation of related polymetallic multistranded helicates and grids. Despite the more abundant use of analogous dioxygen‐resistant [Ag^I(α,α′‐diimine)₂]⁺ units in modern entangled metallo‐supramolecular assemblies, a related thermodynamic justification was absent. Solid‐state structural characterizations show the successive formation of [Ag^I(α,α′‐diimine)(CH₃CN)][X] and [Ag^I(α,α′‐diimine)₂][X] upon the stepwise reactions of α,α′‐diimine=2,2′‐bipyridine (bpy) or 1,10‐phenanthroline (phen) derivatives with AgX (X=BF₄⁻, ClO₄⁻, PF₆⁻). In room‐temperature, 5–10 mM acetonitrile solutions, these cationic complexes exist as mixtures in fast exchange on the NMR timescale. Spectrophotometric titrations using the unsubstituted bpy and phen ligands point to the statistical (=non‐cooperative) binding of two successive bidentate ligands around Ag^I, a mechanism probably driven by the formation of hydrophobic belts, that overcomes the unfavorable decrease in the positive charge borne by the metallic cation. Surprisingly, the addition of methyl groups adjacent to the nitrogen donors (6,6′ positions in dmbpy; 2,9 positions in dmphen) induces positive cooperativity for the formation of [Ag(dmbpy)₂]⁺ and [Ag(dmphen)₂]⁺, a trend assigned to additional stabilizing interligand interactions. Adding rigid and polarizable phenyl side arms in [Ag(Brdmbpy)₂]⁺ further reinforces the positively cooperative process, while limiting the overall decrease in metal–ligand affinity.

Phenylthiol-BODIPY-based supramolecular metallacycles for synergistic tumor chemo-photodynamic therapy

The development of more effective tumor therapy remains challenging and has received widespread attention. In the past decade, there has been growing interest in synergistic tumor therapy based on supramolecular coordination complexes. Herein, we describe two triangular metallacycles (1 and 2) constructed by the formation of pyridyl boron dipyrromethene (BODIPY)-platinum coordination. Metallacycle 2 had considerable tumor penetration, as evidenced by the phenylthiol-BODIPY ligand imparting red fluorescent emission at ∼660 nm, enabling bioimaging, and transport visualization within the tumor. Based on the therapeutic efficacy of the platinum(II) acceptor and high singlet oxygen (¹O₂) generation ability of BODIPY, 2 was successfully incorporated into nanoparticles and applied in chemo-photodynamic tumor therapy against malignant human glioma U87 cells, showing excellent synergistic therapeutic efficacy. A half-maximal inhibitory concentration of 0.35 μM was measured for 2 against U87 cancer cells in vitro. In vivo experiments indicated that 2 displayed precise tumor targeting ability and good biocompatibility, along with strong antitumor effects. This work provides a promising approach for treating solid tumors by synergistic chemo-photodynamic therapy of supramolecular coordination complexes.

Complex-as-Ligand Strategy as a Tool for the Design of a Binuclear Nonsymmetrical Chromium(III) Assembly: Near-Infrared Double Emission and Intramolecular Energy Transfer

The chromium(III) polypyridyl complexes are appealing for their long-lived near-infrared (NIR) emission reaching the millisecond range and for the strong circularly polarized luminescence of their isolated enantiomers. However, harnessing those properties in functional polynuclear Cr^III devices remains mainly inaccessible because of the lack of synthetic methods for their design and functionalization. Even the preparation and investigation of most basic nonsymmetrical Cr^III dyads exhibiting directional intramolecular intermetallic energy transfer remain unexplored. Taking advantage of the inertness of heteroleptic chromium(III) polypyridyl building blocks, we herein adapt the "complex-as-ligand" strategy, largely used with precious 4d and 5d metals, for the preparation of a binuclear nonsymmetrical Cr^III complex (3d metal). The resulting [(phen)₂Cr(L)Cr(tpy)]⁶⁺ dyad shows dual long-lived NIR emission and a directional intermetallic energy transfer that is controlled by the specific arrangements of the different coordination spheres. This strategy opens a route for building predetermined polynuclear assemblies with this earth-abundant metal.

Self-Assembly of Miktoarm Star Polyelectrolytes in Solutions with Various Ionic Strengths

We studied the self-assembly of miktoarm star polyelectrolytes with different numbers of arms in solutions with various ionic strengths using coarse-grained molecular dynamic simulations. Spherical micelles are obtained for star polyelectrolytes with fewer arms, whereas wormlike clusters are obtained for star polyelectrolytes with more arms at a low ionic strength environment, with hydrophilic arms showing a stretched conformation. The number of clusters shows an overall decreasing tendency with increasing the number of arms in star polyelectrolytes due to strong electrostatic coupling between polycations and polyanions. The formation of wormlike clusters follows an overall stepwise pathway with an intermittent association-dissociation process for star polyelectrolytes with weak electrostatic coupling. These computational results can provide relevant physical insights to understand the self-assembly mechanism of star polyelectrolytes in solvents with various ionic strengths and to design star polyelectrolytes with functional groups that can fine-tune self-assembled structures for specific applications.
