Nonporous Adaptive Crystals of Pillararenes

Novel pillar[n]arenes magnetic nanoparticles: Preparation and application in quantitative analysis of trace perfluorinated compounds from aqueous samples

BACKGROUND

Perfluorinated compounds (PFCs) are a class of widely manufactured and used emerging persistent pollutants. The recent discovered new class of macrocycles pillararenes have garnered significant attention for the applications in environmental pollutant adsorption, with abundant π electron cavities, a symmetrical rigid structure, and host-guest recognition capabilities.

RESULTS

In this work, we designed and synthesized novel cationic pillar [n]arenes magnetic nanoparticles (CWPA5@MNPs), and investigated its adsorption performance and mechanism as a type of new adsorbent for the enrichment of PFCs. The results indicate that CWPA5@MNPs exhibits selectively strong affinity for perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) and long-chain (C9-C14) perfluorocarboxylic acids (PFCAs), with the adsorption efficiency exceeding 80 % within 12 min. The maximum adsorption capacity of CWPA5@MNPs for PFOS was measured to be 29.02 mg/g. CWPA5@MNPs can be rapidly isolated from the solution using external magnets, offering a quick and easy separation. Consequently, this study established a CWPA5@MNPs-assisted magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) coupled with high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (CWPA5@MNPs-MSPE-HPLC-MS/MS) method for the rapid detection of trace levels of PFCs in environmental water samples. The analysis of 7 PFCs yielded recovery rates ranging from 86.1 % to 107.5 %, with intraday and interday relative standard deviations (RSD) of 3.6-6.4 % and 1.3-7.0 %, respectively.

SIGNIFICANCE AND NOVELTY

The study reveals the synthesis and application of novel cationic pillar [n]arenes magnetic nanoparticles (CWPA5@MNPs) as highly efficient adsorbents for selective perfluorinated compounds (PFCs) in water samples. It demonstrates the potential of the newly developed CWPA5@MNPs-MSPE-HPLC-MS/MS method for the quantitative analysis of PFCs in environment, with high sensitivity, accuracy and stability.

Bispillar[5]arene-Based Slide-Ring Polyrotaxanation Enables Enhanced Toughness, Recyclability, Impact, and Puncture Resistance of Polyisoprene Elastomers

A series of slide-ring polyrotaxanes (SRPs) have been constructed by the solvent-free blending of a ditopic pillar[5]arene (DP5A) and polyisoprene (PIP) after thermal annealing. Solid-state 13C NMR experiments supported the fact that the pillar[5]arene rings of DP5A were threaded by PIP chains to afford physically interlocked networks. Tensile tests revealed that 1% of DP5A can improve the elongation at break from 50 to 239%, the tensile modulus from 2.1 to 3.9 MPa, and the toughness from 0.35 to 4.5 MJ/m3. Impact and puncture resistance experiments show that the DP5A-doped materials exhibit remarkable enhancement of protective and impalement-resistant performance. The samples can be also recycled repeatedly due to their physical crosslinking nature. The important stress delocalization effects have been attributed to the pulley effect of DP5A in the SRP materials, which represents a supramolecular approach for improving the performance of PIP elastomers.

Host-Guest Interactions Induced Enhancement in Oxidase-Like Activity of a Benzothiadiazole Dye Inside an Aqueous Pd8L4 Barrel

The effect of host-guest interactions on the chemistry of encapsulated molecules is a fascinating field of research that has gained momentum in recent years. Much of the work in this field has been focused on the effect of such interactions on catalysis and photoluminescence of encapsulated dyes. However, the effect of such interactions on related photoinduced processes, such as photoregulated oxidase-mimicking activity, has not been explored much. Herein, we report a unique example of enhancement of oxidase-like activity of a benzothiadiazole dye (G1) in water through encapsulation within a M8L4 molecular barrel (1). Favorable host-guest interactions helped the encapsulated guest G1 to have better photoinduced electron transfer to molecular oxygen leading to increased production of superoxide radical anions and oxidase-like activity. Furthermore, encapsulation inside 1 also caused a change in the redox potentials of the guest (G1) which after photoinduced electron transfer produced a better oxidizing agent than free G1. These phenomena combined to enhance the oxidase-like activity of dye G1 upon encapsulation inside cage 1. The present report demonstrates a unique effect of host-guest chemistry on photoregulated processes.

A Pillar[5]arene-Containing Metal-Organic Framework for Rapid and Highly Capable Adsorption of a Mustard Gas Simulant

Mustard gas causes irreversible damage upon inhalation or contact with the human body. Consequently, the development of adsorbents for effective interception of mustard gas at low concentrations and high flow rates is an urgent necessity. Here we report a stable porous pillar[5]arene-containing metal-organic framework (MOF) based on zirconium (EtP5-Zr-scu), demonstrating that embedding pillar[5]arene units in MOFs can provide specific binding sites for efficient adsorption of a mustard gas simulant, 2-chloroethyl ethyl sulfide (CEES). EtP5-Zr-scu achieves a higher capacity and more rapid adsorption compared to its counterpart without embedded pillar[5]arene units (H4tcpt-Zr-scu) and perethylated pillar[5]arene (EtP5) alone. Single crystal X-ray diffraction and solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance reveal that the enhanced performance of EtP5-Zr-scu is derived from the host-guest complexation between CEES and pillar[5]arene moieties. Moreover, breakthrough experiments confirmed that the interception performance of EtP5-Zr-scu against CEES (800 ppm, 120 mL/min) was significantly improved (566 min/g) compared with H4tcpt-Zr-scu (353 min/g) and EtP5 (0.873 min/g), attributed to the integration of open channels with specific recognition sites. This work marks a significant advancement in the development of macrocycle-incorporated crystalline framework materials with recognition sites for the efficient capture of guest molecules.

Calix[2]azolium[2]benzimidazolone hosts for selective binding of neutral substrates in water

The separation and purification of chemical raw materials, particularly neutral compounds with similar physical and chemical properties, represents an ongoing challenge. In this study, we introduce a class of water-soluble macrocycle compound, calix[2]azolium[2]benzimidazolone (H), comprising two azolium and two benzimidazolone subunits. The heterocycle subunits form a hydrophobic binding pocket that enables H1 to encapsulate a series of neutral guests in water with 1:1 or 2:1 stoichiometry, including aldehydes, ketones, and nitrile compounds. The host-guest complexation in the solid state was further confirmed through X-ray crystallography. Remarkably, H1 was shown to be a nonporous adaptive crystal material to separate valeraldehyde from the mixture of valeraldehyde/2-methylbutanal/pentanol with high selectivity and recyclability in the solid states. This work not only demonstrates that azolium-based macrocycles are promising candidates for the encapsulation of organic molecules but also shows the potential application in separation science.

Acyclic Cucurbit[n]uril Receptors Function as Solid State Sequestrants for Organic Micropollutants

The accumulation of organic micropollutants (OMP) in aquatic systems is a major societal problem that can be addressed by approaches including nanofiltration, flocculation, reverse osmosis and adsorptive methods using insoluble materials (e.g. activated carbon, MOFs, nanocomposites). More recently, polymeric versions of supramolecular hosts (e.g. cyclodextrins, calixarenes, pillararenes) have been investigated as OMP sequestrants. Herein, we report our study of the use of water insoluble dimethylcatechol walled acyclic cucurbit[n]uril (CB[n]) hosts as solid state sequestrants for a panel of five OMPs. A series of hosts (H1-H4) were synthesized by reaction of glycoluril oligomer (monomer-tetramer) with 3,6-dimethylcatechol and fully characterized by spectroscopic means and x-ray crystallography. The solid hosts sequester OMPs from water with removal efficiencies exceeding 90 % in some cases. The removal efficiencies of the new hosts parallel the known molecular recognition properties of analogous water soluble acyclic CB[n]. OMP uptake by solid host occurs rapidly (≈120 seconds). Head-to-head comparison with CB[6] in batch-mode separation and DARCO activated carbon in flow-through separation mode show that tetramer derived host (H4) performs very well under identical conditions. The work establishes insoluble acyclic CB[n]-type receptors as a promising new platform for OMP sequestration.

Vapochromic separation of toluene and pyridine azeotropes using adaptive macrocycle co-crystals

The separation of toluene (Tol) and pyridine (Py) azeotropes is significant in the chemical industry. Herein, we present a new method for the energy-efficient separation of Tol and Py using pillar[5]arene-based adaptive macrocycle co-crystals (MCCs) that can selectively separate Py from a Py/Tol equimolar mixture with 99.2% purity, accompanied by vapochromic behavior from white to yellow.

A Visible-Light Regulated ATP Transport in Retinal-Modified Pillar[6]arene Layer-by-Layer Self-Assembled Sub-Nanochannel

Natural light-responsive rhodopsins play a critical role in visual conversion, signal transduction, energy transmission, etc., which has aroused extensive interest in the past decade. Inspired by these gorgeous works of living beings, scientists have constructed various biomimetic light-responsive nanochannels to mimic the behaviors of rhodopsins. However, it is still challenging to build stimuli-responsive sub-nanochannels only regulated by visible light as the rhodopsins are always at the sub-nanometer level and regulated by visible light. Pillar[6]arenes have an open cavity of 6.7 Å, which can selectively recognize small organic molecules. They can be connected to ions of ammonium or carboxylate groups on the rims. Therefore, we designed and synthesized the amino and carboxyl-derived side chains of pillar[6]arenes with opposite charges. The sub-nanochannels were constructed through the electrostatic interaction of layer-by-layer self-assembled amino and carboxyl-derived pillar[6]arenes. Then, the natural chromophore of the retinal with visible light-responsive performance was modified on the upper edge of the sub-nanochannel to realize the visible light switched on and off. Finally, we successfully constructed a visible light-responsive sub-nanochannel, providing a novel method for regulating the selective transport of energy-donating molecules of ATP.

Solvent-Responsive Nonporous Adaptive Crystals Derived from Pyridinium Hydrochloride and the Application in Iodine Adsorption

Nonporous adaptive crystals (NACs) are crystalline nonporous materials that can undergo a structural adaptive phase transformation to accommodate specific guest via porous cavity or lattice voids. Most of the NACs are based on pillararenes because of their flexible backbone and intrinsic porous structure. Here a readily prepared organic hydrochloride of 4-(4-(diphenylamino)phenyl)pyridin-1-ium chloride (TPAPyH), exhibiting the solvent dimension-dependent adaptive crystallinity is reported. Wherein it forms a nonporous α crystal in a solvent with larger dimensions, while forming two porous β and γ crystals capable of accommodating solvent molecules in solvent with small size. Furthermore, the thermal-induced single-crystal-to-single-crystal (SCSC) transition from the β to α phase can be initiated. Upon exposure to iodine vapor or immersion in aqueous solution, the nonporous α phase transforms to porous β phase by adsorbing iodine molecules. Owing to the formation of trihalide anion I2Cl- within the crystal cavity, TPAPyH exhibits remarkable performance in iodine storage, with a high uptaking capacity of 1.27 g g-1 and elevated iodine desorption temperature of up to 110 and 82 °C following the first and second adsorption stage. The unexpected adaptivity of TPAPyH inspires the design of NACs for selective adsorption and separation of volatile compound from organic small molecules.

High-resolution performance of pillar[6]arene functionalized with imidazolium ionic liquids for gas chromatography

Pillar[n]arenes (P[n]A, n = 5-10) have attracted much attention because of their highly symmetric pillar-shaped architecture with π-electron rich cavity. Nevertheless, the use of ionic liquid functionalized P[n]A in chromatography has not been reported up to data. This work reports the investigation of the imidazolium ionic liquids functionalized pillar[6]arene (P6A-C10-IM-C8[NTf2]) as the stationary phase for gas chromatography (GC). The statically coated P6A-C10-IM-C8[NTf2] column (0.25 mm i.d.) showed moderate polarity and high column efficiency of 4733 plates/m determined by n-dodecane at 120 °C (k = 2.29). Owing to its unique amphiphilic conformation, the P6A-C10-IM-C8[NTf2] showed good column inertness and resolving capability for a wide range of analytes and isomers. Particularly, the P6A-C10-IM-C8[NTf2] column exhibited distinctly advantageous performance for the challenging isomers of halogenated benzenes, benzaldehydes, phenols and anilines over the common commercial columns, namely 5% phenyl methyl polysiloxane (HP-5) and 35% phenyl methyl polysiloxane (HP-35). In addition, it exhibited good column repeatability and reproducibility with RSD values on the retention times less than 0.05% for run-to-run, 0.38% for day-to-day and 2.94% for column-to-column, respectively. This work demonstrates the promising future of ionic liquid P[n]A stationary phases for chromatographic separations.

Host-Guest Cocrystallization of Phenanthrene[2]arene Macrocycles Facilitating Structure Determination of Liquid Organic Molecules

Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis has emerged as the most reliable method for determining the structures of organic molecules. However, numerous analytes, such as liquid organic molecules, pose challenges in crystallization, making their structures directly elusive via X-ray crystallography methods. Herein, we introduced the rapid cocrystallization of a macrocycle named phenanthrene[2]arene (PTA, host) with 15 liquid organic molecules (guests). The guest liquid organic molecules were successively cocrystallized with the aid of the PTA host. Moreover, the chemical structures of the liquid organic molecules could be determined through single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. PTA exhibited high adaptivity and was capable of encapsulating liquid organic molecules without forming covalent bonds or strong directional interactions. The results revealed that the adaptive crystals of PTA exhibited excellent cocrystallization capacity. Weak noncovalent interactions between the host and guest molecules were crucial for organizing the guests in an ordered pattern.

Solid-State Emissive Pillar[6]arene Derivative Having Alternate Methylene and Nitrogen Bridges

Macrocyclic arenes show conformational adaptability, which allows host-guest complexations with the size-matched guest molecules. However, their emission properties are often poor in the solid states due to the self-absorption. Herein, we newly synthesized pillar[6]arene derivatives having alternate methylene and nitrogen bridging structures. Solvatochromic study reveals that the nitrogen-embedding into the cyclic structures can strengthen the intramolecular charge transfer (CT) nature compared to that of the linear nitrogen-bridged precursor. Owing to the large Stokes shift in the solid state, one of the nitrogen-embedded pillar[6]arenes shows high absolute photoluminescence quantum yield (ΦPL=0.36). Furthermore, it displays a turn-off sensing ability toward nitrobenzene (NB) vapor; a fluorescence quenching is observed when exposed to the NB vapor. From the structural analysis before and after the exposure of NB vapor, the amorphous nitrogen-embedded pillar[6]arene efficiently co-crystallize with NB and formed non-emissive intermolecular CT complexes with NB.

Double-cavity cucurbiturils: synthesis, structures, properties, and applications

Double-cavity Q[n]s are relatively new members of the Q[n] family and have garnered significant interest due to their distinctive structures and novel properties. While they incorporate n glycoluril units, akin to their single-cavity counterparts, their geometry can best be described as resembling a figure-of-eight or a handcuff, distinguishing them from single-cavity Q[n]s. Despite retaining the core molecular recognition traits of single-cavity Q[n]s, these double-cavity variants introduce fascinating new attributes rooted in their distinct configurations. This overview delves into the synthesis, structural attributes, properties, and intriguing applications of double-cavity Q[n]s. Some of the applications explored include their role in supramolecular polymers, molecular machinery, supra-amphiphiles, sensors, artificial light-harvesting systems, and adsorptive separation materials. Upon concluding this review, we discuss potential challenges and avenues for future development and offer valuable insights for other scholars working in this area with the aim of stimulating further exploration and interest.

Fluorinated Nonporous Adaptive Cages for the Efficient Removal of Perfluorooctanoic Acid from Aqueous Source Phases

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) accumulate in water resources and pose serious environmental and health threats due to their nonbiodegradable nature and long environmental persistence times. Strategies for the efficient removal of PFAS from contaminated water are needed to address this concern. Here, we report a fluorinated nonporous adaptive crystalline cage (F-Cage 2) that exploits electrostatic interaction, hydrogen bonding, and F-F interactions to achieve the efficient removal of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) from aqueous source phases. F-Cage 2 exhibits a high second-order kobs value of approximately 441,000 g mg-1 h-1 for PFOA and a maximum PFOA adsorption capacity of 45 mg g-1. F-Cage 2 can decrease PFOA concentrations from 1500 to 6 ng L-1 through three rounds of flow-through purification, conducted at a flow rate of 40 mL h-1. Elimination of PFOA from PFOA-loaded F-Cage 2 is readily achieved by rinsing with a mixture of MeOH and saturated NaCl. Heating at 80 °C under vacuum then makes F-Cage 2 ready for reuse, as demonstrated across five successive uptake and release cycles. This work thus highlights the potential utility of suitably designed nonporous adaptive crystals as platforms for PFAS remediation.

Advanced Soft Porous Organic Crystal with Multiple Gas-Induced Single-Crystal-to-Single-Crystal Transformations for Highly Selective Separation of Propylene and Propane

Soft porous organic crystals with stimuli-responsive single-crystal-to-single-crystal (SCSC) transformations are important tools for unraveling their structural transformations at the molecular level, which is of crucial importance for the rapid development of stimuli-responsive systems. Carefully balancing the crystallinity and flexibility of materials is the prerequisite to construct advanced organic crystals with SCSC, which remains challenging. Herein, a squaraine-based soft porous organic crystal (SPOC-SQ) with multiple gas-induced SCSC transformations and temperature-regulated gate-opening adsorption of various C1-C3 hydrocarbons is reported. SPOC-SQ is featured with both crystallinity and flexibility, which enable pertaining the single crystallinity of the purely organic framework during accommodating gas molecules and directly unveiling gas-framework interplays by SCXRD technique. Thanks to the excellent softness of SPOC-SQ crystals, multiple metastable single crystals are obtained after gas removals, which demonstrates a molecular-scale shape-memory effect. Benefiting from the single crystallinity, the molecule-level structural evolutions of the SPOC-SQ crystal framework during gas departure are uncovered. With the unique temperature-dependent gate-opening structural transformations, SPOC-SQ exhibits distinctly different absorption behaviors towards C3 H6 and C3 H8 , and highly efficient and selective separation of C3 H6 /C3 H8 (v/v, 50/50) is achieved at 273 K. Such advanced soft porous organic crystals are of both theoretical values and practical implications.

Clamparene: Synthesis, Structure, and Its Application in Spontaneous Formation of 3D Porous Crystals

Macrocyclic arenes have emerged as pivotal scaffolds in supramolecular chemistry. Despite their significant contributions to molecular recognition and diverse applications, challenges persist in the development of macrocyclic arene-based crystalline materials, particularly in achieving porosity and addressing limitations in adsorption efficiency resulting from the small cavity sizes of existing macrocyclic arenes. In this study, we present the design and synthesis of a novel macrocyclic arene, clamparene (CLP), featuring a rigid backbone, easy synthesis, and a sizable cavity. CLP self-assembles into one-dimensional sub-nanotubes that further organize into a three-dimensional porous framework in the solid state. The crystalline solid of CLP exhibits potential as a porous crystalline adsorbent for various benzene-based contaminants with rapid adsorption kinetics, large uptake amounts, and good recyclability.

Recent progress in iodine capture by macrocycles and cages

The effective capture of radioiodine is vital to the development of the nuclear industry and ecological environmental protection. There is, therefore, a continuously growing research exploration in various types of solid-state materials for iodine capture. During the last decade, the potential of using macrocycle and cage-based supramolecular materials in effective uptake and separation of radioactive iodine has been demonstrated. Interest in the application of these materials in iodine capture originates from their diversified porous characteristics, abundant host-guest chemistry, high iodine affinity and adsorption capacity, high stability in various environments, facile modification and functionalization, and intrinsic structural flexibility, among other attributes. Herein, recent progress in macrocycle and cage-based solid-state materials, including pure discrete macrocycles and cages, and their polymeric forms, for iodine capture is summarized and discussed with an emphasis on iodine capture capacities, mechanisms, and design strategies.

Pillararene-Based Supramolecular Polymers for Adsorption and Separation

Supramolecular polymers have attracted increasing attention in recent years due to their perfect combination of supramolecular chemistry and traditional polymer chemistry. The design and synthesis of macrocycles have driven the rapid development of supramolecular chemistry and polymer science. Pillar[n]arenes, a new generation of macrocyclic compounds possessing unique pillar-shaped structures, nano-sized cavities, multi-functionalized groups, and excellent host-guest complexation abilities, are promising candidates to construct supramolecular polymer materials with enhanced properties and functionalities. This review summarizes recent progress in the design and synthesis of pillararene-based supramolecular polymers (PSPs) and illustrates their diverse applications as adsorption and separation materials. All performances are evaluated and analyzed in terms of efficiency, selectivity, and recyclability. Typically, PSPs can be categorized into three typical types according to their topologies, including linear, cross-linked, and hybrid structures. The advances made in the area of functional supramolecular polymeric adsorbents formed by new pillararene derivatives are also described in detail. Finally, the remaining challenges and future perspectives of PSPs for separation-based materials science are discussed. This review will inspire researchers in different fields and stimulate creative designs of supramolecular polymeric materials based on pillararenes and other macrocycles for effective adsorption and separation of a variety of targets.

Spontaneous and Selective Macrocyclization in Nitroaldol Reaction Systems

Through a dynamic polymerization and self-sorting process, a range of lowellane macrocycles have been efficiently generated in nitroaldol systems composed of aromatic dialdehydes and aliphatic or aromatic dinitroalkanes. All identified macrocycles show a composition of two repeating units, resulting in tetra-β-nitroalcohols of different structures. The effects of the building block structure on the macrocyclization process have been demonstrated, and the influence from the solvent has been explored. In general, the formation of the lowellanes was amplified in response to phase-change effects, although solution-phase structures were, in some cases, favored.

Highly Selective p-Xylene Separation from Mixtures of C8 Aromatics by a Nonporous Molecular Apohost

High and increasing production of separation of C8 aromatic isomers demands the development of purification methods that are efficient, scalable, and inexpensive, especially for p-xylene, PX, the largest volume C8 commodity. Herein, we report that 4-(1H-1,2,4-triazol-1-yl)-phenyl-1H-benzo[de]isoquinoline-1,3(2H)-dione (TPBD), a molecular compound that can be prepared and scaled up via solid-state synthesis, exhibits exceptional PX selectivity over each of the other C8 isomers, o-xylene (OX), m-xylene (MX), and ethylbenzene (EB). The apohost or α form of TPBD was found to exhibit conformational polymorphism in the solid state enabled by rotation of its triazole and benzene rings. TPBD-αI and TPBD-αII are nonporous polymorphs that transformed to the same PX inclusion compound, TPBD-PX, upon contact with liquid PX. TPBD enabled highly selective capture of PX, as established by competitive slurry experiments involving various molar ratios in binary, ternary, and quaternary mixtures of C8 aromatics. Binary selectivity values for PX as determined by 1H NMR spectroscopy and gas chromatography ranged from 22.4 to 108.4, setting new benchmarks for both PX/MX (70.3) and PX/EB (59.9) selectivity as well as close to benchmark selectivity for PX/OX (108.4). To our knowledge, TPBD is the first material of any class to exhibit such high across-the-board PX selectivity from quaternary mixtures of C8 aromatics under ambient conditions. Crystallographic and computational studies provide structural insight into the PX binding site in TPBD-PX, whereas thermal stability and capture kinetics were determined by variable-temperature powder X-ray diffraction and slurry tests, respectively. That TPBD offers benchmark PX selectivity and facile recyclability makes it a prototypal molecular compound for PX purification or capture under ambient conditions.

Study of Drug Delivery Using Purely Organic Macrocyclic Containers-Cucurbit[7]uril and Pillararene

An impaired immune system is the root of various human ailments provoking the urge to find vehicle-mediated quick delivery of small drug molecules and other vital metabolites to specific tissues and organs. Thus, drug delivery strategies are in need of improvement in therapeutic efficacy. It can be achieved only by increasing the drug-loading capacity, increasing the sustained release of a drug to its target site, easy relocation of drug molecules associated with facile complexation-induced properties of molecular vehicles, and high stimuli-responsive drug administration. Supramolecular drug delivery systems (SDDS) provide a much needed robust yet facile platform for fabricating innovative drug nanocarriers assembled by thermodynamically noncovalent interaction with the tunable framework and above-mentioned properties. Measures of cytotoxicity and biocompatibility are the two main criteria that lie at the root of any promising medicinal applications. This Review features significant advancements in (i) supramolecular host-guest complexation using cucurbit[7]uril (CB[7]), (ii) encapsulation of the drug and its delivery application tailored for CB[7], (iii) self-assembly of supramolecular amphiphiles, (iv) supramolecular guest relay using host-protein nanocavities, (v) pillararene (a unique macrocyclic host)-mediated SDDS for the delivery of smart nanodrugs for siRNA, fluorescent molecules, and insulin for juvenile diabetes. Furthermore, fundamental questions and future hurdles related to smart SDDS based on CB[7] and pillararenes and their future promising breakthrough implementations are also distinctly outlined in this Review.

Stimuli-Responsive, Dynamic Supramolecular Organic Frameworks

Supramolecular organic frameworks (SOFs) are a class of three-dimensional, potentially porous materials obtained by the self-assembly of organic building blocks held together by weak interactions such as hydrogen bonds, halogen bonds, π⋅⋅⋅π stacking and dispersion forces. SOFs are being extensively studied for their potential applications in gas storage and separation, catalysis, guest encapsulation and sensing. The supramolecular forces that guide their self-assembly endow them with an attractive combination of crystallinity and flexibility, providing intelligent dynamic materials that can respond to external stimuli in a reversible way. The present review article will focus on SOFs showing dynamic behaviour when exposed to different stimuli, highlighting fundamental aspects such as the combination of tectons and supramolecular interactions involved in the framework formation, structure-property relationship and their potential applications.

Arylazopyrazole as a photo-switch for controllable self-assembly of pillar[6]arene-based supramolecular amphiphiles

A photo-responsive host-guest molecular recognition between a cationic pillar[6]arene host and an arylazopyrazole derived guest was established. Based on this novel recognition motif, a photo-controllable supra-amphiphile was constructed. The spontaneous aggregation can be reversibly controlled by irradiation with UV (365 nm) and green light (520 nm), leading to a switch between spherical nanoparticles and vesicle-like aggregates.

Modular Synthesis of Biphen[n]arenes Directed by Five-Membered Heterocycles

Modular synthesis of novel biphen[n]arenes (n = 2-4) with customizable heterocycle blocks, functional skeletons, binding sites, and topological structures could be facilely achieved through the rational design and replacement of reaction modules (furan and thiophene), functional modules (substituted benzene, biphenyl, and naphthalene), and linking modules (methylene). These biphen[n]arenes were characterized by NMR, HRMS, and X-ray crystalline diffraction, complemented by DFT calculations. Their photophysical properties were thoroughly studied.

Applications of macrocycle-based solid-state host-guest chemistry

Macrocyclic molecules have been used in various fields owing to their guest binding properties. Macrocycle-based host-guest chemistry in solution can allow for precise control of complex formation. Although solution-phase host-guest complexes are easily prepared, their limited stability and processability prevent widespread application. Extending host-guest chemistry from solution to the solid state results in complexes that are generally more robust, enabling easier processing and broadened applications. Macrocyclic compounds in the solid state can encapsulate guests with larger affinities than their soluble counterparts. This is crucial for use in applications such as separation science and devices. In this Review, we summarize recent progress in macrocycle-based solid-state host-guest chemistry and discuss the basic physical chemistry of these complexes. Representative macrocycles and their solid-state complexes are explored, as well as potential applications. Finally, perspectives and challenges are discussed.

Smart organic materials based on macrocycle hosts

Innovative design of smart organic materials is of great importance for the advancement of modern technology. Macrocycle hosts, possessing cyclic skeletons, intrinsic cavities, and specific guest binding properties, have demonstrated pronounced potential for the elaborate fabrication of a variety of functional organic materials with smart stimuli-responsive characteristics. In this tutorial review, we outline the current development of smart organic materials based on macrocycle hosts as key building blocks, focusing on the design principles and functional mechanisms of the tailored systems. Three main types of macrocycle-based smart organic materials are exemplified as follows according to the distinct forms of construction patterns: (1) supramolecular polymeric materials and nanoassemblies; (2) adaptive molecular crystals; (3) smart porous organic materials. The responsive performances of macrocycle-containing smart materials in versatile aspects, including mechanically adaptive polymers, soft optoelectronic devices, data encryption, drug delivery systems, artificial transmembrane channels, crystalline-state gas adsorption/separation, and fluorescence sensing, are illustrated by discussing the representative studies as paradigms, where the roles of macrocycles in these systems are highlighted. We also provide in the conclusion part the perspectives and remaining challenges in this burgeoning field.

Grinding-induced supramolecular charge-transfer assemblies with switchable vapochromism toward haloalkane isomers

Synthetic macrocycles have proved to be of great application value in functional charge-transfer systems in the solid state in recent years. Here we show a switchable on-off type vapochromic system toward 1-/2-bromoalkane isomers by constructing solid-state charge-transfer complexes between electron-rich perethylated pillar[5]arene and electron-deficient aromatic acceptors including 4-nitrobenzonitrile and 1,4-dinitrobenzene. These charge-transfer complexes with different colors show opposite color changes upon exposure to the vapors of 1-bromoalkanes (fading) and 2-bromoalkanes (deepening). Single-crystal structures incorporating X-ray powder diffraction and spectral analyses demonstrate that this on-off type vapochromic behavior is mainly attributed to the destruction (off) and reconstruction (on) of the charge-transfer interactions between perethylated pillar[5]arene and the acceptors, for which the competitive host-guest binding of 1-bromoalkanes and the solid-state structural transformation triggered by 2-bromoalkanes are respectively responsible. This work provides a simple colorimetric method for distinguishing positional isomers with similar physical and chemical properties.

Harnessing Pillar[5]arene Host-Guest Complexation To Improve pH Stability and Affect Enzymatic Degradation of the Anticancer Prodrug Capecitabine: A 19 F NMR Study

Cancer is a global health problem, and supramolecular chemotherapy is emerging as a novel strategy to battle the disease. Here, we first evaluated the thermodynamic and kinetic stability of the complexes formed between several water-soluble per-substituted pillar[5]arene derivatives and capecitabine (1), a widely used oral chemotherapeutic prodrug. The exchange rate was studied, for the first time in pillararene chemistry, by the 19 F guest exchange saturation transfer (GEST) NMR technique. Importantly, when we evaluated the effect of complexation on the characteristics of 1, we found that the complexation of 1 with such pillar[5]arene hosts increased capecitabine stability at acidic pH very significantly and slowed its enzymatic degradation by the carboxylesterase enzyme in a manner that depended on the host. These interesting findings could have implications on the clinical use of this heavily used prodrug and might affect the management of cancer patients.

Industrial Separation Challenges: How Does Supramolecular Chemistry Help?

The chemical industry and the chemical processes underscoring it are under intense scrutiny as the demands for the transition to more sustainable and environmentally friendly practices are increasing. Traditional industrial separation systems, such as thermally driven distillation for hydrocarbon purification, are energy intensive. The development of more energy efficient separation technologies is thus emerging as a critical need, as is the creation of new materials that may permit a transition away from classic distillation-based separations. In this Perspective, we focus on porous organic cages and macrocycles that can adsorb guest molecules selectively through various host-guest interactions and permit molecular sieving behavior at the molecular level. Specifically, we summarize the recent advances where receptor-based adsorbent materials have been shown to be effective for industrially relevant hydrocarbon separations, highlighting the underlying host-guest interactions that impart selectivity and permit the observed separations. This approach to sustainable separations is currently in its infancy. Nevertheless, several receptor-based adsorbent materials with extrinsic/intrinsic voids or special functional groups have been reported in recent years that can selectively capture various targeted guest molecules. We believe that the understanding of the interactions that drive selectivity at a molecular level accruing from these initial systems will permit an ever-more-effective "bottom-up" design of tailored molecular sieves that, in due course, will allow adsorbent material-based approaches to separations to transition from the laboratory into an industrial setting.

Potential of nonporous adaptive crystals for hydrocarbon separation

Hydrocarbon separation is an important process in the field of petrochemical industry, which provides a variety of raw materials for industrial production and a strong support for the development of national economy. However, traditional separation processes involve huge energy consumption. Adsorptive separation based on nonporous adaptive crystal (NAC) materials is considered as an attractive green alternative to traditional energy-intensive separation technologies due to its advantages of low energy consumption, high chemical and thermal stability, excellent selective adsorption and separation performance, and outstanding recyclability. Considering the exceptional potential of NAC materials for hydrocarbon separation, this review comprehensively summarizes recent advances in various supramolecular host-based NACs. Moreover, the current challenges and future directions are illustrated in detail. It is expected that this review will provide useful and timely references for researchers in this area. Based on a large number of state-of-the-art studies, the review will definitely advance the development of NAC materials for hydrocarbon separation and stimulate more interesting studies in related fields.

Efficient separation of monobromotoluene isomers by nonporous adaptive perbromoethylated pillar[5]arene crystals

Herein we report an efficient adsorptive separation approach for monobromotoluene isomers using nonporous adaptive crystals of perbromoethylated pillar[5]arene (BrP5). The purity of separated m-bromotoluene from an equal volume mixture of m-bromotoluene and o-bromotoluene reaches 96.6% in one cycle and the adsorbent BrP5 can be reused without losing separation performance.

Highly Selective Transport and Enrichment of Lithium Ions through Bionic Ion Pair Receptor Nanochannels

Inspired by ion pair cotransport channels in biological systems, a bionic nanochannel modified with lithium ion pair receptors is constructed for selective transport and enrichment of lithium ions (Li⁺). NH₂-pillar[5]arene (NP5) is chosen as ion pair receptors, and the theoretical simulation and NMR titration experiments illustrate that NP5 has good affinity for the ion pair of LiCl through a strong host-guest interaction at the molecular level. Due to the confinement effect and ion pair cooperation recognition, an NP5-based receptor was introduced into an artificial PET nanochannel. An I-V test indicated that the NP5 channel realized the highly selective recognition for Li⁺. Meanwhile, transmembrane transport and COMSOL simulation experiments proved that the NP5 channel achieved the transport and enrichment of Li⁺ through the cooperative interaction between NP5 and LiCl. Moreover, the receptor solution of transmembrane transport LiCl in the NP5 channel was used to cultivate wheat seedlings, which obviously promoted their growth. This nanochannel based on the ion pair recognition will be much useful for practical applications like metal ion extraction, enrichment, and recycle.

Separation of Cyclohexanone and Cyclohexanol by Adaptive Pillar[5]arene Cocrystals Accompanied by Vapochromic Behavior

The separation of cyclohexanone (CHA-one) and cyclohexanol (CHA-ol) mixtures is of great importance in the chemical industry. Current technology exploits multiple steps of energy-intensive rectification due to their close boiling points. Herein, we report a new and energy-efficient adsorptive separation method employing binary adaptive macrocycle cocrystals (MCCs) built with π-electron-rich pillar[5]arene (P5) and an electron-deficient naphthalenediimide derivative (NDI) that can selectively separate CHA-one from an equimolar CHA-one/CHA-ol mixture with >99% purity. Intriguingly, this adsorptive separation process is accompanied by vapochromic behavior from pink to dark brown. Single-crystal and powder X-ray diffraction analyses reveal that the adsorptive selectivity and vapochromic property are derived from the CHA-one vapor inside the cocrystal lattice voids triggering solid-state structural transformations to yield charge-transfer (CT) cocrystals. Moreover, the reversible transformations make the cocrystalline materials highly recyclable.

Time-Dependent Solvent-Driven Solid-State Fluorescence-based Numeric Coding

Controllable solid-state transformations can provide a basis for novel functional materials. Herein, we report a series of solid-state systems that can be readily transformed between amorphous, co-crystalline, and mixed crystalline states via grinding or exposure to solvent vapors. The present solid materials were constructed using an all-hydrocarbon macrocycle, cyclo[8](1,3-(4,6-dimethyl)benzene) (D_4d-CDMB-8) (host), and neutral aggregation-caused quenching dyes (guests), including 9,10-dibromoanthracene (1), 1,8-naphtholactam (2), diisobutyl perylene-3,9-dicarboxylate (3), 4,4-difluoro-1,3,5,7-tetramethyl-4-bora-3a,4a-diaza-s-indacene (4), 4,7-di(2-thienyl)-benzo[2,1,3]thiadiazole (5), and 4-imino-3-(pyridin-2-yl)-4H-quinolizine-1-carbonitrile (6). Seven co-crystals and six amorphous materials were obtained via host-guest complexation. Most of these materials displayed turn-on fluorescence emission (up to 20-fold enhancement relative to the corresponding solid-state guests). The interconversion between amorphous, co-crystalline states, and crystalline mixtures could be induced by exposure to solvent vapors or by subjecting to grinding. The transformations could be monitored readily by means of single-crystal and powder X-ray diffraction analyses, as well as solid-state fluorescent emission spectroscopy. The externally induced structural interconversions resulted in time-dependent fluorescence changes. This allowed sets of privileged number array codes to be generated.

Regulating Chemistry Composition on a Crystal Surface by Introducing a Cation Trapping Agent: A Novel Strategy to Tune Moisture Sensitivity of Crystals

The crystal moisture sensitivity can be tuned by the chemical composition on the crystal surface. Ammonium dinitramide (ADN) crystal is a promising oxidizer for solid propellants. However, its strong moisture sensitivity greatly limits its practical applications. Here, we report a novel strategy to reduce moisture sensitivity by trapping ammonium cations with montmorillonite (MMT) to modulate the chemistry composition on the ADN crystal surface. An extraordinary phenomenon can be found: the crystal surface of the recrystallized ADN with 1% MMT (ADN-1% MMT) is rearranged with more low-surface-energy -NO₂ groups (65.84%) and less high-surface-energy NH₄⁺ groups (4.8%). In addition, ADN-1% MMT presents a more homogeneous low surface energy feature with a narrower surface energy distribution. As a result, ADN-1% MMT exhibits a noticeably lower hygroscopicity at 20 °C and 60% RH, which is accordant with the simulated hygroscopicity based on XRD and moisture sensitivity prediction based on surface energy. This study brings out a novel modification idea to adjust crystal moisture sensitivity by tuning the chemistry composition on the crystal surface based on trapping cations.

Water-Soluble Pd6L3 Molecular Bowl for Separation of Phenanthrene from a Mixture of Isomeric Aromatic Hydrocarbons

Phenanthrene is a high-value raw material in chemical industries. Separation of phenanthrene from isomeric anthracene continues to be a big challenge in the industry due to their very similar physical properties. Herein, we report the self-assembly of a water-soluble molecular bowl (TB) from a phenothiazine-based unsymmetrical terapyridyl ligand (L) and a cis-blocked 90° Pd(II) acceptor. TB featured an unusual bowl-like topology, with a wide rim diameter and a hydrophobic inner cavity fenced by the aromatic rings of the ligand. The above-mentioned features of TB allow it to bind polyaromatic hydrocarbons in its confined cavity. TB shows a higher affinity for phenanthrene over its isomer anthracene in water, which enables it to separate phenanthrene with ∼93% purity from an equimolar mixture of phenanthrene and anthracene. TB is also able to extract pyrene with around ∼90% purity from an equimolar mixture of coronene, perylene, and pyrene. Moreover, TB can be reused for several cycles without significant degradation in its performance as an extracting agent. This clean strategy of separation of phenanthrene and pyrene from a mixture of hydrophobic hydrocarbons by aqueous extraction is noteworthy.

Substrate-Responsive Pillar[5]arene-Based Organic Room-Temperature Phosphorescence

Room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) is a photophysical phenomenon typically associated with a long-lived emission that can be detected by the unaided eye. Several natural proteins display RTP, as do certain artificial polymers. In both cases, the RTP is ascribed to effective intramolecular through-space electronic communication. However, small molecules with internal electronic communication that enable RTP are relatively rare. Herein, we describe an alkyl halide-responsive RTP system consisting of a meta-formylphenyl-bearing pillar[5]arene derivative that supports effective through-space charge transfer (TSCT) within the pillararene cavity. Treatment with bromoethane, a heavy atom-containing guest for the pillar[5]arene host, serves to enhance the emission. An isomeric para-formylphenyl-bearing pillar[5]arene system proved ineffective in producing an RTP effect. Quantum chemical calculations based on single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses provided insights into the structural determinants governing TSCT between the 1,4-dimethoxybenzene donor units and the formylphenyl groups of the pillar[5]arene, as well as the associated energy gaps and intersystem crossing channels. We believe that the present system and the associated mechanistic analysis provide the foundation for design of new small molecule with tunable RTP features.

Electricity-Wettability Controlled Fast Transmission of Dopamine in Nanochannels

Achieving fast transmembrane transmission of molecules in organisms is a challenging problem. Inspired by the transport of Dopmine (DA) in organisms, the DA transporter (DAT) binds to DA in a way that has a ring recognition (the recognition group is the tryptophan group). Herein, D-Tryptophan-pillar[5]arene (D-Trp-P5) functionalized conical nanochannel is constructed to achieve fast transmission of DA. The D-Trp-P5 functionalized nanochannel enables specific wettability recognition of DA molecules and has great cycle stability. With the controlling of voltage to wettability, the transport flux of DA is up to 499.73 nmol cm^-2 h^-1 at -6 V, 16.88 times higher than that under positive voltages. In response to these results, a high-throughput DA transport device based on controlled electricity-wettability is provided.

Macrocycle-Based Crystalline Supramolecular Assemblies Built with Intermolecular Charge-Transfer Interactions

Synthetic macrocycles have served as principal tools for supramolecular chemistry, have greatly extended the scope of organic charge transfer (CT) complexes, and have proved to be of great practical value in the solid state during the past few years. In this Minireview, we summarize the research progress on the macrocycle-based crystalline supramolecular assemblies primarily driven by intermolecular CT interactions (a.k.a. macrocycle-based crystalline CT assemblies, MCCAs for short), which are classified by their donor-acceptor (D-A) constituent elements, including simplex macrocyclic hosts, heterogeneous macrocyclic hosts, and host-guest D-A pairs. Particular attention will be focused on their diverse functions and applications, as well as the underlying CT mechanisms from the perspective of crystal engineering. Finally, the remaining challenges and prospects are outlined.

Pillararenes as Promising Carriers for Drug Delivery

Since their discovery in 2008 by N. Ogoshi and co-authors, pillararenes (PAs) have become popular hosts for molecular recognition and supramolecular chemistry, as well as other practical applications. The most useful property of these fascinating macrocycles is their ability to accommodate reversibly guest molecules of various kinds, including drugs or drug-like molecules, in their highly ordered rigid cavity. The last two features of pillararenes are widely used in various pillararene-based molecular devices and machines, stimuli-responsive supramolecular/host-guest systems, porous/nonporous materials, organic-inorganic hybrid systems, catalysis, and, finally, drug delivery systems. In this review, the most representative and important results on using pillararenes for drug delivery systems for the last decade are presented.

Aza-phenol Based Macrocyclic Probes Design for "CHEF-on" Multi Analytes Sensor: Crystal Structure Elucidation and Application in Biological Cell Imaging

Metal bound macrocyclic compounds found in biological systems inspired us to design and synthesize two Robson-type macrocyclic Schiff-base chemosensors, H ₂ L1 (H ₂ L1=1,11-dimethyl-6,16-dithia-3,9,13,19-tetraaza-1,11(1,3)-dibenzenacycloicosaphane-2,9,12,19-tetraene-1,11-diol) and H ₂ L2 (H ₂ L2=1,11-dimethyl-6,16-dioxa-3,9,13,19-tetraaza-1,11(1,3)-dibenzenacycloicosaphane-2,9,12,19-tetraene-1,11-diol). Both the chemosensors have been characterized with different spectroscopic techniques. They act as multianalyte sensor and exhibit "turn-on" fluorescence toward different metal ions in 1X PBS (Phosphate Buffered Saline) solution. In presence of Zn²⁺, Al³⁺, Cr³⁺ and Fe³⁺ ions, H ₂ L1 exhibits ∼6-fold enhancement of emission intensity, while H ₂ L2 shows ∼6-fold enhancement of emission intensity in the presence of Zn²⁺, Al³⁺ and Cr³⁺ ions. The interaction between the different metal ion and chemosensor have been examined by absorption, emission, and ¹H NMR spectroscopy as well as by ESI-MS⁺ analysis. We have successfully isolated and solved the crystal structure of the complex [Zn(H ₂ L1)(NO₃)]NO₃ (1) by X-ray crystallography. The crystal structure of 1 shows 1:1 metal:ligand stoichiometry and helps to understand the observed PET-Off-CHEF-On sensing mechanism. LOD values of H ₂ L1 and H ₂ L2 toward metal ions are found to be ∼10^-8 and ∼10^-7 M, respectively. Large Stokes shifts of the probes against analytes (∼100 nm) make them a suitable candidate for biological cell imaging studies. Robson type phenol based macrocyclic fluorescence sensors are very scarce in the literature. Therefore, the tuning of structural parameters as the number and nature of donor atoms, their relative locations and presence of rigid aromatic groups can lead to the design of new chemosensors, which can accommodate different charged/neutral guest(s) inside its cavity. The study of the spectroscopic properties of this type of macrocyclic ligands and their complexes might open a new avenue of chemosensors.

Engineering solid nanochannels with macrocyclic host-guest chemistry for stimuli responses and molecular separations

Biological channels in the cell membrane play a critical role in the regulation of signal transduction and transmembrane transport. Researchers have been committed to building biomimetic nanochannels to imitate the above significant biological processes. Unlike the fragile feature of biological channels, numerous solid nanochannels have aroused extensive interests for their controllable chemical properties on the surface and superior mechanical properties. Surface functionalization has been confirmed to be vital to determine the properties of solid nanochannels. Macrocyclic hosts (e.g., the crown ethers, cyclodextrins, calix[n]arenes, cucurbit[n]urils, pillar[n]arenes, and trianglamine) can be tailored to the interior surface of the nanochannels with the performance of stimuli response and separation. Macrocycles have good reversibility and high selectivity toward specific ions or molecules, promoting functionalies of solid nanochannels. Hence, the combination of macrocyclic hosts and solid nanochannels is conducive to taking both advantages and achieving applications in functional nanochannels (e.g., membranes separations, biosensors, and smart devices). In this review, the most recent advances in nanochannel membranes decorated by macrocyclic host-guest chemistry are briefed. A variety of macrocyclic hosts-based responsive nanochannels are organized (e.g., the physical stimuli and specific molecules or ions stimuli) and nanochannels are separated (e.g., water purifications, enantimerseparations, and organic solvent nanofiltration), respectively. Hopefully, this review can enlighten on how to effectively build functional nanochannels and facilitate their practical applications in membrane separations.

Probing the Importance of Host Symmetry on Carbohydrate Recognition

The design of molecular cages with low symmetry could allow for more specific tuning of their properties and better mimic the unsymmetrical and complex environment of protein pockets. However, the added value of lowering symmetry of molecular receptors has been rarely demonstrated. Herein, C₃ - and C₁ -symmetrical cages, presenting the same recognition sites, have been synthesized and investigated as hosts for carbohydrate recognition. Structurally related derivatives of glucose, galactose and mannose were found to have greater affinity to the receptor with the lowest symmetry than to their C₃ -symmetrical analogue. According to the host cavity modelling, the C₁ symmetry receptor exhibits a wider opening than its C₃ -symmetrical counterpart, providing easier access and thus promoting guest proximity to binding sites. Moreover, our results show the high stereo- and substrate selectivity of the C₁ symmetry cage with respect to its C₃ counterpart in the recognition of sugars.

Supramolecular Enhancement of Charge Transport through Pillar[5]arene-Based Self-Assembled Monolayers

Intermolecular charge transport is one of the essential modes for modulating charge transport in molecular electronic devices. Supermolecules are highly promising candidates for molecular devices because of their abundant structures and easy functionalization. Herein, we report an efficient strategy to enhance charge transport through pillar[5]arene self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) by introducing cationic guests. The current density of pillar[5]arene SAMs can be raised up to about 2.1 orders of magnitude by inserting cationic molecules into the cavity of pillar[5]arenes in SAMs. Importantly, we have also observed a positive correlation between the charge transport of pillar[5]arene-based complex SAMs and the binding affinities of the pillar[5]arene-based complexation. Such an enhancement of charge transport is attributed to the efficient host-guest interactions that stabilize the supramolecular complexes and lower the energy gaps for charge transport. This work provides a predictive pattern for the regulation of intermolecular charge transport in guiding the design of next generation switches and functional sensors in supramolecular electronics.

Pillararene-Based Variable Stoichiometry Co-Crystallization: A Versatile Approach to Diversified Solid-State Superstructures

Variable stoichiometry co-crystals are important in solid-state supramolecular chemistry as they allow studies of structure-property relationships while permitting the synthesis of new scaffolds using identical synthons. In this work, we extend the concept of variable stoichiometry co-crystals into the realm of pillararene chemistry and show that this permits the rational construction of a diverse set of supramolecular structures in the solid state. Specifically, we report a series of variable stoichiometry co-crystals based on pillar[n]arenes and tetracyanobenzene (TCNB) and show that the combination of in-cavity complexation by pillar[n]arenes (n = 5,6) and outside binding with TCNB allows several types of co-crystals with different self-assembled superstructures to be isolated. The variable stoichiometry co-crystals of this study display different solid-state physicochemical properties, including colors and luminescence features. Among these pillar[n]arene-based co-crystals, we discovered unique crystallographic architectures wherein two sets of individual host-guest complexes co-exist in the solid state. These mixed co-crystal systems allow for vapochromic-based detection of n-bromoalkanes. This work highlights a new strategy for the construction of self-assembled superstructures in the solid state and for tuning their intrinsic characteristics, including their luminescent and substrate-responsive features.

Cluster-Based Crystalline Materials for Iodine Capture

The treatment of radioactive iodine in nuclear waste has always been a critical issue of social concern. The rational design of targeted and efficient capture materials is of great significance to the sustainable development of the ecological environment. In recent decades, crystalline materials have served as a molecular platform to study the binding process and capture mechanism of iodine molecules, enabling people to understand the interaction between radioactive iodine guests and pores intuitively. Cluster-based crystalline materials, including molecular clusters and cluster-based metal-organic frameworks, are emerging candidates for iodine capture due to their aggregative binding sites, precise structural information, tunable pores/packing patterns, and abundant modifications. Herein, recent progress of different types of cluster materials and cluster-dominated metal-organic porous materials for iodine capture is reviewed. Research prospects, design strategies to improve the affinity for iodine and possible capture mechanisms are discussed.

Simultaneous Recognition and Separation of Organic Isomers Via Cooperative Control of Pore-Inside and Pore-Outside Interactions

Despite the desirability of organic isomer recognition and separation, current strategies are expensive and complicated. Here, a simple strategy for simultaneously recognizing and separating organic isomers using pillararene-based charge-transfer cocrystals through the cooperative control of pore-inside and pore-outside intermolecular interactions is presented. This strategy is illustrated using 1-bromobutane (1-BBU), which is often produced as an isomeric mixture with 2-bromobutane (2-BBU). According to its structure, perethylated pillar[5]arene (EtP5) and 3,5-dinitrobenzonitrile (DNB) are strategically chosen as a donor and an acceptor. As a result, their cocrystal exhibited stronger pore-inside interactions and much weaker pore-outside interactions with 1-BBU than with 2-BBU. Consequently, nearly 100% 1-BBU selectivity is achieved in two-component mixtures, even in those containing trace 1-BBU (1%), whereas free EtP5 only achieved 89.80% selectivity. The preference for linear bromoalkanes is retained in 1-bromopentane/3-bromopentane and 1-bromohexane/2-bromohexane mixtures, demonstrating the generality of this strategy. Selective adsorption of linear bromoalkanes induced a naked-eye-detectable color change from red to white. Moreover, the cocrystal are used over multiple cycles without losing selectivity.
