Nanoparticles and plants: a focus on analytical characterization techniques

Nanotechnology has brought about significant progress through the use of goods based on nanomaterials. However, concerns remain about the accumulation of these materials in the environment and their potential toxicity to living organisms. Plants have the ability to take in nanomaterials (NMs), which can cause changes in their physiology and morphology. On the other hand, nanoparticles (NPs) have been used to increase plant development and control pests in agriculture by including them into agrochemicals. The challenges of the interaction, internalization, and accumulation of NMs within plant tissues are enormous, mainly because of the various characteristics of NMs and the absence of reliable analytical tools. As our knowledge of the interactions between NMs and plant cells expands, we are able to create novel NMs that are tailored, targeted, and designed to be safe, thus minimizing the environmental consequences of nanomaterials. This review provides a thorough examination and comparison of the main microscopy techniques, spectroscopic methods, and far-field super-resolution methodologies used to examine nanomaterials within the cell walls of plants.

Secondary Ion Mass Spectral Imaging of Metals and Alloys

Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (SIMS) is an outstanding technique for Mass Spectral Imaging (MSI) due to its notable advantages, including high sensitivity, selectivity, and high dynamic range. As a result, SIMS has been employed across many domains of science. In this review, we provide an in-depth overview of the fundamental principles underlying SIMS, followed by an account of the recent development of SIMS instruments. The review encompasses various applications of specific SIMS instruments, notably static SIMS with time-of-flight SIMS (ToF-SIMS) as a widely used platform and dynamic SIMS with Nano SIMS and large geometry SIMS as successful instruments. We particularly focus on SIMS utility in microanalysis and imaging of metals and alloys as materials of interest. Additionally, we discuss the challenges in big SIMS data analysis and give examples of machine leaning (ML) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) for effective MSI data analysis. Finally, we recommend the outlook of SIMS development. It is anticipated that in situ and operando SIMS has the potential to significantly enhance the investigation of metals and alloys by enabling real-time examinations of material surfaces and interfaces during dynamic transformations.

Spatial pharmacology using mass spectrometry imaging

The emerging and powerful field of spatial pharmacology can map the spatial distribution of drugs and their metabolites, as well as their effects on endogenous biomolecules including metabolites, lipids, proteins, peptides, and glycans, without the need for labeling. This is enabled by mass spectrometry imaging (MSI) that provides previously inaccessible information in diverse phases of drug discovery and development. We provide a perspective on how MSI technologies and computational tools can be implemented to reveal quantitative spatial drug pharmacokinetics and toxicology, tissue subtyping, and associated biomarkers. We also highlight the emerging potential of comprehensive spatial pharmacology through integration of multimodal MSI data with other spatial technologies. Finally, we describe how to overcome challenges including improving reproducibility and compound annotation to generate robust conclusions that will improve drug discovery and development processes.

Thermal Recovery of the Electrochemically Degraded LiCoO2/Li7La3Zr2O12:Al,Ta Interface in an All-Solid-State Lithium Battery

All-solid-state lithium batteries are promising candidates for next-generation energy storage systems. Their performance critically depends on the capacity and cycling stability of the cathodic layer. Cells with a garnet Li₇La₃Zr₂O₁₂ (LLZO) electrolyte can show high areal storage capacity. However, they commonly suffer from performance degradation during cycling. For fully inorganic cells based on LiCoO₂ (LCO) as cathode active material and LLZO, the electrochemically induced interface amorphization has been identified as an origin of the performance degradation. This study shows that the amorphized interface can be recrystallized by thermal recovery (annealing) with nearly full restoration of the cell performance. The structural and chemical changes at the LCO/LLZO heterointerface associated with degradation and recovery were analyzed in detail and justified by thermodynamic modeling. Based on this comprehensive understanding, this work demonstrates a facile way to recover more than 80% of the initial storage capacity through a thermal recovery (annealing) step. The thermal recovery can be potentially used for cost-efficient recycling of ceramic all-solid-state batteries.
