Method for Ultratrace Level 241Am Determination in Large Soil Samples by Sector Field-Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry: With Emphasis on the Removal of Spectral Interferences and Matrix Effect

Determination of ultra-trace level 241Am in marine sediment and seawater by combining TK200-TK221 tandem-column extraction chromatography and SF ICP-MS

Sound strategies for marine chemical monitoring call for measurement systems capable of producing comparable analytical results with demonstrated quality. This work presents the development and validation of a new analytical procedure for the determination of the 241Am mass fraction in marine sediment and seawater samples at low levels. The procedure includes a tandem-column extraction chromatography for separation of 241Am and sector field-inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (SF ICP-MS) for its determination. The separation is based on the application of two new extraction resins, TK200 and TK221. The acid leaching method was employed for the pre-treatment of marine sediments, while Fe(OH)3 co-precipitation was used for Am pre-concentration in seawater samples. The extraction behaviors of Am on TK221 resins in the different acidic mediums were investigated. The removal capabilities of the tandem TK200-TK221 columns for the 241Am in the presence of interfering elements including Pu, Pb, Hg, Bi, Tl, Pt, Hf, U, and Th were carefully investigated and the corresponding decontamination factors (DFs) estimated to be in the range from 104 to 106. The main interfering element Pu was efficiently removed with a DF of about 6 × 105. Matrix rare earth elements (REEs) in marine sediments were further removed by the application of TEVA resins. 241Am mass fraction was quantified by the application of external calibration and SF ICP-MS. Following the recommendations of the ISO/IEC 17025 guidelines, the validation of the analytical procedure was accomplished by executing it on the certified reference material (CRM) IAEA-385 (marine sediment) and the seawater IAEA-443 reference materials (RM). The obtained results showed that 241Am mass fractions were accurately determined in both reference samples, with excellent reproducibility (2.1 % and 7.6 %) and low LODs (0.4 fg g-1 and 0.2 fg g-1). The relative expanded uncertainties (k = 2) obtained were 17.1 % and 29.0 %, respectively. The overall analytical times for the application of the proposed procedure on the marine sediment and seawater samples were evaluated to be only about 9 h and 6.5 h, respectively. It shows great advantages for its potential applications for emergency monitoring of 241Am contamination in the marine environment.

Simultaneous Determination of Transuranium Radionuclides in Urine by Tandem Quadrupole ICP-MS/MS with Mass-Shift Mode Combined with Chemical Separation

The urine bioassay method for transuranium nuclides (237Np, 239,240,241Pu, 241Am, and 244Cm) is needed to quickly assess the potential internal contamination in emergency situations. However, in the case that the analysis of multiple radionuclides is required in the same sample, time-consuming/tedious sequential analytical procedures using multiple chromatographic separation resins would have to be employed for the separation of every single radionuclide. In this work, a rapid method for the simultaneous determination of transuranium nuclides in urine was developed by using triple quadrupole inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS/MS) combined with a single DGA resin column. The chemical behaviors of Np/Pu and Am/Cm on the DGA resin were consistent in 8-10 mol/L HNO3 and 0.005-0.02 mol/L NaNO2 when 242Pu and 243Am were selected as tracers for Np/Pu and Am/Cm yield monitoring. Based on their different reaction rates with O2, 237Np, 239,240,241Pu, 241Am, and 244Cm in the same solution were simultaneously measured by ICP-MS/MS in the same run. The elimination efficiency of 238U+ tailing (7.43 × 10-9), 238U1H16O2+/238U16O2+ (8.11 × 10-8) and cross contamination of 241Pu and 241Am (<1%) were achieved using 10.0 mL/min He-0.3 mL/min O2 even if the eluate was directly measured without any evaporation. The detection limits of transuranium nuclides were at the femtogram level, demonstrating the feasibility of ICP-MS/MS for simultaneous transuranic radionuclides urinalysis. The developed method was validated by analyzing the spiked urine samples.

Distributions of fallout 137Cs, 239+240Pu and 241Am in a soil core from South Central China

The source and vertical distribution of ¹³⁷Cs,^239+240Pu and ²⁴¹Am activity concentrations in a soil core from Hunan Province, China were investigated. The maximum ¹³⁷Cs and ^239+240Pu activity concentrations were 15.45 ± 0.76 mBq/g and 0.819 ± 0.066 mBq/g, respectively. While the maximum ²⁴¹Am activity concentration in samples obtained from the core was 0.341 ± 0.019 mBq/g. The ²⁴⁰Pu/²³⁹Pu atom ratio and the ¹³⁷Cs/^239+240Pu activity ratio were 0.183 ± 0.011 and 19.5 ± 1.8, respectively, and both were consistent with the characteristic value of global fallout. The integrated ²⁴¹Am/^239+240Pu activity ratio for global fallout was also re-estimated. The measured ²⁴¹Am/^239+240Pu activity ratio (average 0.43 ± 0.07) in the samples was very close to the estimated value (0.45), which suggested their ²⁴¹Am also came from the global fallout. Regarding the vertical distribution of ¹³⁷Cs, ^239+240Pu and ²⁴¹Am in these red soil samples, all these radionuclides had higher concentrations in upper layers of several centimeters of soil while they had slightly lower concentrations in lower soil layers down to 30 cm. Vertical distributions of ¹³⁷Cs/^239+240Pu and ²⁴¹Am/^239+240Pu activity ratios indicated the migration velocity was Am ≈ Pu > Cs. The intrinsic chemical properties of the radionuclides as well as soil type and properties (acidic, nutrient-deficient and low in organic matter and cation exchange capacity) might be reasons for the differences in their migration behaviors.

Determination of 241Am in Environmental Samples: A Review

The determination of ²⁴¹Am in the environment is of importance in monitoring its release and assessing its environmental impact and radiological risk. This paper aims to give an overview about the recent developments and the state-of-art analytical methods for ²⁴¹Am determination in environmental samples. Thorough discussions are given in this paper covering a wide range of aspects, including sample pre-treatment and pre-concentration methods, chemical separation techniques, source preparation, radiometric and mass spectrometric measurement techniques, speciation analyses, and tracer applications. The paper focuses on some hyphenated separation methods based on different chromatographic resins, which have been developed to achieve high analytical efficiency and sample throughput for the determination of ²⁴¹Am. The performances of different radiometric and mass spectrometric measurement techniques for ²⁴¹Am are evaluated and compared. Tracer applications of ²⁴¹Am in the environment, including speciation analyses of ²⁴¹Am, and applications in nuclear forensics are also discussed.

Simultaneous determination of actinides and 90Sr in large-size soil and sediment samples

A simultaneous analytical method for sequential separation and determination of actinides and ⁹⁰Sr in large-size environmental samples has been developed. In this method, successive co-precipitation steps were firstly conducted to remove matrix elements, then sequential column separation method was applied for simultaneous separation and purification of actinides and ⁹⁰Sr/⁹⁰Y. By using vacuum box technology, the total analytical time was minimized and batch processing allowed analyzing 12 samples in four days. The activity of ⁹⁰Sr was obtained immediately by measuring its daughter radionuclide (⁹⁰Y) with triple-to-double coincidence ratio (TDCR) Cherenkov counting, while the concentrations of Pu isotopes and ²⁴¹Am could be measured by alpha spectrometry and mass spectrometric techniques. The overall recoveries of Pu, Am, Sr and Y were higher than 70% for the entire procedure, while the recovery ratios of Sr/Y were between 0.95 and 1.04 before chromatographic separation. The developed method was verified using 20 g and 50 g of environmental soil samples spiked with certified reference materials IAEA-384 or IAEA-385 and standard solution of ⁹⁰Sr/⁹⁰Y, and good agreement between the expected values and measured results has been achieved.

An efficient method for the removal of Pb prior to the ultra-trace Am measurement by ICP-MS

The existence of Pb which formed polyatomic ions such as PbCl+, PbAr+ would interfere the determination of ultra-trace Am by ICP-MS. An extraction chromatography method for the removal of Pb interference was provided in this work to improve the determination accuracy of ultra-trace Am by ICP-MS. In this study, Sr resin was applied to separate Am and Pb because of the great difference between Am and Pb on adsorption ability. The variable parameters including nitric acid concentration, loading volume, column height and loading amount were investigated to optimize the separation conditions for high recovery of Am (R(Am)) as well as high decontamination factor of Pb (DF(Pb)). The optimal separation method was recommended in the study with the recovery of Am over 99% and the decontamination factor of Pb over 2 × 105. Moreover, the method was successfully applied to the analysis of 241Am in the simulated samples.

237Np and 241Am as Fingerprints in the Major River Basins of Southern China and North South China Sea: A Land-Sea Perspective

During the global nuclear weapon tests, large amounts of radioactive elements are released into the environment. Long-period actinide elements such as Np, Pu, and Am exhibit different behaviors in various environments, and their isotope characteristic fingerprints are of great significance for studying the distribution, migration, and prediction of radioactive pollutants. To investigate the distribution of ²⁴¹Am and ²³⁷Np in southern China, activities of ²⁴¹Am (0.008 ± 0.012-0.932 ± 0.066 Bq/kg) and ²³⁷Np (0.037 ± 0.003-1.458 ± 0.063 mBq/kg), ²³⁷Np/²³⁹Pu atom ratios (0.055 ± 0.003-0.864 ± 0.054), and ²⁴¹Am/^239+240Pu activity ratios (0.033 ± 0.075-15.870 ± 0.477) in 95 surface sediment samples collected from the northern South China Sea and major river basins were analyzed for the first time. Due to the different scavenging mechanisms of Am and Pu, ²⁴¹Am is preferentially concentrated by sinking the particulate, while plutonium is scavenged in the coastal area, resulting in a higher ²⁴¹Am/^239+240Pu activity ratio in estuary and coastal areas. The distribution of ²³⁷Np shows obvious spatial inhomogeneity as the high migration rate. The relevant fingerprint characteristic has changed greatly and needs to be updated urgently. As a result of the convergence of land and sea, ²⁴¹Am, ^239,240Pu, and ²³⁷Np are dominated by terrestrial sediments and deposited in the coastal area of southern China, which should be paid more attention to. This work can establish China's current neptunium radioactivity database, and the difference in Np, Pu, and Am scavenging processes may be a powerful tool for evaluating the impact of the Pearl River Estuary salt tide.

A rapid, automated system for the separation, preconcentration and measurement of 90Sr, and U, Am and Pu isotopes

An online separation and preconcentration method, using an automated flow injection setup and solid phase extraction followed by ICP-MS/MS, was developed for the analysis of ⁹⁰Sr, and U, Am and Pu isotopes in various liquid sample matrices. The radionuclide analytes were separated from interferences and complex matrices using DGA-branched resin and Sr resin, then specific gases were used in the reaction/collision cell in the ICP-MS/MS to measure the different analytes. The system requires smaller sample volumes (10 mL), less sample preparation and shorter processing time (46 min per sample) compared to traditional radiometric and other MS techniques. Based on a 10 mL sample, the limits of detection were 1.48 pg L^-1 (8257 mBq L^-1) for ⁹⁰Sr, 1.75 pg L^-1 (0.40 mBq L^-1) for ²³⁴U, 0.65 pg L^-1 (77.65 mBq L^-1) for ²⁴¹Am, and 0.56 pg L^-1 (1.25 mBq L^-1) for ²³⁹Pu when all target analytes were measured in one analysis. The analytical figures of merit were evaluated for a range of sample matrices including lake water, seawater and urine and were comparable to those reported in the literature. This online system thus provides a novel, fully automated analytical tool with faster analysis time, smaller sample requirements, minimum sample preparation, low detection limits and the flexibility to handle single and multiple measurements of various radionuclides.

Method for determination of Pu isotopes in soil and sediment samples by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry after simple chemical separation using TK200 resin

Plutonium has been extensively studied in the environment, for the purpose of radiological assessment, environmental behavior study and nuclear emergency response. To determine Pu isotopes in environmental soil and sediment, a novel analytical method was established in this study using a new type of extraction resin, TK200 resin. Firstly an investigation was performed to study the extraction behaviors of Pu, U, Th, Hg, Tl, Pb, Bi and Hf on TK200 resin. On the basis of the results, a new chromatographic procedure was then proposed to separate Pu from the elements that interfere the accurate determination of Pu isotopes by mass spectrometry. Owing to the excellent separation efficiency between Pu and interfering elements (IEs) of the developed procedure, high decontamination factors (DFs) were obtained for IEs, e.g. the DF(U) (>7.5 × 10⁷) was the highest reported value. The separation procedure was finally combined with HNO₃ leaching, CaF₂/LaF₃ coprecipitation and sector field-inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (SF-ICPMS) measurement to establish a complete method. The established method was evaluated by analyzing four standard reference materials (soil, sediment), and the results showed that both ^239+240Pu activity and ²⁴⁰Pu/²³⁹Pu isotopic ratio were accurately determined, with stable and high Pu chemical recoveries (81-91%). The whole analytical method only took about 15 h, and the limits of detection were calculated to be 0.13-0.24 fg g^-1 for Pu isotopes (for 2 g soil or sediment), guaranteeing the rapid determination of ultra-trace level Pu in soil and sediment samples.

Distinctive distributions and migrations of 239+240Pu and 241Am in Chinese forest, grassland and desert soils

The vertical distributions and downward migrations of the global fallout derived ^239+240Pu and ²⁴¹Am in diverse types of Chinese soils (forest, grassland and desert) were studied. The mean ^239+240Pu and ²⁴¹Am activity concentrations in the investigated soil cores were 0.28-0.69 mBq/g and 0.13-0.37 mBq/g, respectively, while the accumulative inventories were 61.53-138.99 Bq/m² for ^239+240Pu and 28.29-61.05 Bq/m² for ²⁴¹Am. The convection-dispersion equation (CDE) was used to calculate the migration parameters of ^239+240Pu and higher apparent dispersion coefficients (D) were observed for the acidic forest soils compared with the alkaline grassland and desert soils; meanwhile a compartment model was employed to compare the migration of ^239+240Pu and ²⁴¹Am in successive soil layers which showed that the migration behaviors of ^239+240Pu and ²⁴¹Am were rather similar; both velocities were less than 0.3 cm/y in diverse types of soils and these findings were compatible with those of short-term laboratory simulation experiments in China.

Applications and Uncertainty Estimation of Single Level Standard Addition Method ICP-MS for Elemental Analysis in Various Matrix

The standard addition method (SAM) based on gravimetric sample preparation was investigated as an approach for the removal or cancelling of matrix effects in measurements by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Deduction of the equations and experimental confirmation of the method are both given in the present work. After measuring both spiked and non-spiked samples by ICP-MS, the concentration of an element could be calculated based on the signal intensity ratio to an internal standard. A practical example was provided for the measurement of Fe in a certified reference material (CRM), i.e. NMIJ CRM 7512-a (milk powder). The validity of the method had been confirmed by the results of international comparisons with various kinds of matrix, including bioethanol, human serum, biodiesel fuel, drinking water, infant formula milk power, and seafood. The suggested method had been applied to measurements of multiple elements in three CRMs, including tap water, milk powder, and tea leave powder, respectively.
