Chemical Diversity for Tailoring Negative Thermal Expansion

Biphenyl tetracarboxylic acid-based metal-organic frameworks: a case of topology-dependent thermal expansion

The large inherent flexibility and highly modular nature of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) make them ideal candidates for the study of negative thermal expansion (NTE). Among diverse organic ligands, the biphenyl unit, which can unrestrictedly rotate along its C-C single bond, can largely enhance the structural flexibility. Herein, we explored the thermal expansion behaviors of four indium biphenyl tetracarboxylates (BPTCs). Owing to the different dihedral angles of BPTC ligands and coordination mode of In3+, they show distinct topologies: InOF-1 (nti), InOF-2 (unc), InOF-12 (pts) and InOF-13 (nou). Intriguingly, it is found that the thermal expansion is highly dependent on the specific topology. The MOFs featuring mononuclear nodes show normal positive thermal expansion (PTE), and the magnitudes of coefficients follow the trend of InOF-2 < InOF-12 < InOF-13, inversely related to averaged molecular volumes. In contrast, the InOF-1, composed of a 1D chain of corner-shared InO6 octahedrons, shows pronounced NTE. Detailed high-resolution synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction and lattice dynamic analyses shed light on the fact that NTE in the InOF-1 is a synergy effect of the spring-like distortion of the inorganic 1D helical chain and twisting of the BPTC ligands. The present work shows how the topological arrangement of building blocks governs the thermal expansion behaviors.

Regulating the thermal expansion of a [FePt(CN)4] layer by axial coordination and dimensional reduction

Thermal expansion regulation by chemical decoration at a molecular level is of great technological value for materials science. Herein, we show that the spin crossover active compound Fe(pyz)Pt(CN)4 (pyz = pyrazine) shows a rare 2D negative thermal expansion (NTE) in the ab-plane. By introducing axial coordination iodine ions or reducing the framework dimension from 3D to 2D, the NTE behavior can be effectively switched to positive thermal expansion (PTE) or even zero thermal expansion (ZTE). Moreover, it is found that different spin states of Fe2+ also influence the magnitude of NTE. Compared with the low-spin (LS) sate, the high-spin (HS) state tends to enhance the magnitude of NTE. Combined in situ structural and Raman spectral analyses revealed that the NTE mainly originates from the transverse vibration of a bridging cyano group and the tailorable thermal expansion is closely related to the state of the Fe-CN-Pt linkage. The present study shows how the rational regulation of the building unit and framework dimensions can effectively control thermal expansion behaviors. This insight can serve as guidance for designing and synthesizing novel NTE materials.

Exploring negative thermal expansion materials with bulk framework structures and their relevant scaling relationships through multi-step machine learning

Discovering new negative thermal expansion (NTE) materials is a great challenge in experiment. Meanwhile, the machine learning (ML) method can be another approach to explore NTE materials using the existing material databases. Herein, we adopt the multi-step ML method with efficient data augmentation and cross-validation to identify around 1000 materials, including oxides, fluorides, and cyanides, with bulk framework structures as new potential NTE candidate materials from ICSD and other databases. Their corresponding coefficients of negative thermal expansion (CNTE) and temperature ranges are also well predicted. Among them, about 57 materials are predicted to have an NTE probability of 100%. Some predicted NTE materials were tested by the first-principles calculations with quasi-harmonic approximation (QHA), which indicates that the ML results are in good agreement with the first principles calculation results. Based on the comprehensive analysis of the existing and predicted NTE materials, we established three universal relationships of CNTE with an average electronegativity, porosity, and temperature range. From these, we also identified some important critical values characterizing the NTE property, which can serve as an important criterion for designing new NTE materials.

High-performance Pyroelectric Property Accompanied by Spin Crossover in a Single Crystal of Fe(II) Complex

Pyroelectric materials hold significant potential for energy harvesting, sensing, and imaging applications. However, achieving high-performance pyroelectricity across a wide temperature range near room temperature remains a significant challenge. Herein, we demonstrate a single crystal of Fe(II) spin-crossover compound shows remarkable pyroelectric properties accompanied by a thermally controlled spin transition. In this material, the uniaxial alignment of polar molecules results in a polarization of the lattice. As the molecular geometry is modulated during a gradual spin transition, the polar axis experiences a colossal thermal expansion with a coefficient of 796×10-6 K-1. Consequently, the material's polarization undergoes significant modulation as a secondary pyroelectric effect. The considerable shift in polarization (pyroelectric coefficient, p=3.7-22 nC K-1cm-2), coupled with a low dielectric constant (ϵ'=4.4-5.4) over a remarkably wide temperature range of 298 to 400 K, suggests this material is a high-performance pyroelectric. The demonstration of pyroelectricity combined with magnetic switching in this study will inspire further investigations in the field of molecular electronics and magnetism.

Regulating luminescence thermal enhancement in negative thermal expansion metal-organic frameworks

Overcoming thermal quenching is generally essential for the practical application of luminescent materials. It has been recently found that frameworks with negative thermal expansion (NTE) could be a promising candidate to engineer unconventional luminescence thermal enhancement. However, the mechanism through which luminescence thermal enhancement can be well tuned remains an open issue. In this work, enabled by altering ligands in a series of UiO-66 derived Eu-based metal-organic frameworks, it was revealed that the changes in the thermal expansion are closely related to luminescence thermal enhancement. The NTE of the aromatic ring part favors luminescence thermal enhancement, while contraction of the carboxylic acid part plays the opposite role. Modulation of functional groups in ligands can change the thermal vibration of aromatic rings and then achieve luminescence thermal enhancement in a wide temperature window. Our findings pave the way to manipulate the NTE and luminescence thermal enhancement based on ligand engineering.

Continuous strain tuning of oxygen evolution catalysts with anisotropic thermal expansion

Compressive strain, downshifting the d-band center of transition metal oxides, is an effective way to accelerate the sluggish kinetics of oxygen evolution reaction (OER) for water electrolysis. Here, we find that anisotropic thermal expansion can produce compressive strains of the IrO6 octahedron in Sr2IrO4 catalyst, thus downshifting its d-band center. Different from the previous strategies to create constant strains in the crystals, the thermal-triggered compressive strains can be real-timely tuned by varying temperature. As a result of the thermal strain accelerating OER kinetics, the Sr2IrO4 exhibits the nonlinear lnjo - T-1 (jo, exchange current density; T, absolute temperature) Arrhenius relationship, resulting from the thermally induced low-barrier electron transfer in the presence of thermal compressive strains. Our results verify that the thermal field can be utilized to manipulate the electronic states of Sr2IrO4 via thermal compressive strains downshifting the d-band center, significantly accelerating the OER kinetics, beyond the traditional thermal diffusion effects.

Negative to positive axial thermal expansion switching of an organic crystal: contribution to multistep photoactuation

Materials displaying negative thermal expansion (NTE), in contrast to typical materials with positive thermal expansion (PTE), are attractive for both fundamental research and practical applications, including the development of composites with near-zero thermal expansion. A recent data mining study revealed that approximately 34% of organic crystals may present NTE, indicating that NTE in organic crystals is much more common than generally believed. However, organic crystals that switch from NTE to PTE or vice versa have rarely been reported. Here, we report the crystal of N-3,5-di-tert-butylsalicylide-3-nitroaniline in the enol form (enol-1) as the first organic crystal in which the axial thermal expansion changes from negative to positive at around room temperature. When heated, the crystal shrinks along the a-axis below 30 °C and then it expands above 30 °C. Geometric calculations revealed that below 30 °C, the decrease in the tilt angle of the molecule exceeds the increase in the interplanar distance, causing NTE, whereas above 30 °C, the increase in the interplanar distance outweighs the decrease in the tilt angle, resulting in PTE. By combining photoisomerisation and the NTE-PTE switching induced by the photothermal effect, multistep crystal photoactuation was achieved. Moreover, actuation switching of the same crystal sample by changing atmosphere temperature was realised by utilising the NTE-PTE change. Such NTE-PTE switching without a thermal phase transition provides not only new insight into organic crystals but also a new strategy for designing crystal actuators.

Antiferroelectricity-Induced Negative Thermal Expansion in Double Perovskite Pb2 CoMoO6

Materials with negative thermal expansion (NTE) attract significant research attention owing to their unique physical properties and promising applications. Although ferroelectric phase transitions leading to NTE are widely investigated, information on antiferroelectricity-induced NTE remains limited. In this study, single-crystal and polycrystalline Pb2 CoMoO6 samples are prepared at high pressure and temperature conditions. The compound crystallizes into an antiferroelectric Pnma orthorhombic double perovskite structure at room temperature owing to the opposite displacements dominated by Pb2+ ions. With increasing temperature to 400 K, a structural phase transition to cubic Fm-3m paraelectric phase occurs, accompanied by a sharp volume contraction of 0.41%. This is the first report of an antiferroelectric-to-paraelectric transition-induced NTE in Pb2 CoMoO6 . Moreover, the compound also exhibits remarkable NTE with an average volumetric coefficient of thermal expansion αV = -1.33 × 10-5 K-1 in a wide temperature range of 30-420 K. The as-prepared Pb2 CoMoO6 thus serves as a prototype material system for studying antiferroelectricity-induced NTE.

Delicate Softness in a Temperature-Responsive Porous Crystal for Accelerated Sieving of Propylene/Propane

Soft nanoporous crystals with structural dynamics are among the most exciting recently discovered materials. However, designing or controlling a porous system with delicate softness that can recognize similar gas pairs, particularly for the promoted ability at increased temperature, remains a challenge. Here, we report a soft crystal (NTU-68) with a one-dimensional (1D) channel that expands and contracts delicately around 4 Å at elevated temperature. The completely different adsorption processes of propane (C3H8: kinetic dominance) and propylene (C3H6: thermodynamic preference) allow the crystal to show a sieving separation of this mixtures (9.9 min·g-1) at 273 K, and the performance increases more than 2-fold (20.4 min·g-1) at 298 K. This phenomenon is contrary to the general observation for adsorption separation: the higher the temperature, the lower the efficiency. Gas-loaded in situ powder X-ray analysis and modeling calculations reveal that slight pore expansion caused by the increased temperature provides plausible nanochannel for adsorption of the relatively smaller C3H6 while maintaining constriction on the larger C3H8. In addition, the separation process remains unaffected by the general impurities, demonstrating its true potential as an alternative sorbent for practical applications. Moving forward, the delicate crystal dynamics and promoted capability for molecular recognition provide a new route for the design of next-generation sieve materials.

Sintering Temperature Effect of Near-Zero Thermal Expansion Mn3Zn0.8Sn0.2N/Ti Composites

Metal matrix composites with near-zero thermal expansion (NZTE) have gained significant popularity in high-precision industries due to their excellent thermal stability and mechanical properties. The incorporation of Mn3Zn0.8Sn0.2N, which possesses outstanding negative thermal expansion properties, effectively suppressed the thermal expansion of titanium. Highly dense Mn3Zn0.8Sn0.2N/Ti composites were obtained by adjusting the fabrication temperature. Both composites fabricated at 650 °C and 700 °C exhibited NZTE. Furthermore, finite element analysis was employed to investigate the effects of thermal stress within the composites on their thermal expansion performance.

Equation of state predictions for ScF3 and CaZrF6 with neural network-driven molecular dynamics

In silico property prediction based on density functional theory (DFT) is increasingly performed for crystalline materials. Whether quantitative agreement with experiment can be achieved with current methods is often an unresolved question, and may require detailed examination of physical effects such as electron correlation, reciprocal space sampling, phonon anharmonicity, and nuclear quantum effects (NQE), among others. In this work, we attempt first-principles equation of state prediction for the crystalline materials ScF3 and CaZrF6, which are known to exhibit negative thermal expansion (NTE) over a broad temperature range. We develop neural network (NN) potentials for both ScF3 and CaZrF6 trained to extensive DFT data, and conduct direct molecular dynamics prediction of the equation(s) of state over a broad temperature/pressure range. The NN potentials serve as surrogates of the DFT Hamiltonian with enhanced computational efficiency allowing for simulations with larger supercells and inclusion of NQE utilizing path integral approaches. The conclusion of the study is mixed: while some equation of state behavior is predicted in semiquantitative agreement with experiment, the pressure-induced softening phenomenon observed for ScF3 is not captured in our simulations. We show that NQE have a moderate effect on NTE at low temperature but does not significantly contribute to equation of state predictions at increasing temperature. Overall, while the NN potentials are valuable for property prediction of these NTE (and related) materials, we infer that a higher level of electron correlation, beyond the generalized gradient approximation density functional employed here, is necessary for achieving quantitative agreement with experiment.

The Structure of Terbium in the Ferromagnetic State

Metals typically crystallize in highly symmetric structures due to their nondirectional and nonsaturated metallic bonds. Here, we report that terbium metal in its ferromagnetic state adopts an unusual low-symmetry orthorhombic structure with a Cmcm space group. A similar structure has been previously observed only in a few actinide metals with bonding 5f electrons at ambient pressure, such as uranium, neptunium, and plutonium, but with different nearest coordination numbers and bond-length variations. The Tb atom occupies the 4c site (0, ∼0.1661, 1/4), building up -[Tb-Tb]- layers stacking along the b-axis. Our first-principles many-body calculations of the crystal field splitting in the correlated Tb 4f-shell demonstrate that the Cmcm structure for ferromagnetic terbium is stabilized by magneto-elastic forces due to a secondary order of quadrupolar moments in the ferromagnetic state. These findings are significant for further understanding of the nature of terbium, including its electron structure, energy bands, phonons, and magnetism.

Interplanar Ferromagnetism Enhanced Ultrawide Zero Thermal Expansion in Kagome Cubic Intermetallic (Zr,Nb)Fe2

A cubic metal exhibiting zero thermal expansion (ZTE) over a wide temperature window demonstrates significant applications in a broad range of advanced technologies but is extremely rare in nature. Here, enabled by high-temperature synthesis, we realize tunable thermal expansion via magnetic doping in the class of kagome cubic (Fd-3m) intermetallic (Zr,Nb)Fe2. A remarkably isotropic ZTE is achieved with a negligible coefficient of thermal expansion (+0.47 × 10-6 K-1) from 4 to 425 K, almost wider than most ZTE in metals available. A combined in situ magnetization, neutron powder diffraction, and hyperfine Mössbauer spectrum analysis reveals that interplanar ferromagnetic ordering contributes to a large magnetic compensation for normal lattice contraction upon cooling. Trace Fe-doping introduces extra magnetic exchange interactions that distinctly enhance the ferromagnetism and magnetic ordering temperature, thus engendering such an ultrawide ZTE. This work presents a promising ZTE in kagome metallic materials.

Colossal negative thermal expansion in a cucurbit[8]uril-enabled uranyl-organic polythreading framework via thermally induced relaxation

It is an ongoing goal to achieve the effective regulation of the thermal expansion properties of materials. In this work, we propose a method for incorporating host-guest complexation into a framework structure and construct a flexible cucurbit[8]uril uranyl-organic polythreading framework, U₃(bcbpy)₃(CB8). U₃(bcbpy)₃(CB8) can undergo huge negative thermal expansion (NTE) and has a large volumetric coefficient of -962.9 × 10^-6 K^-1 within the temperature range of 260 K to 300 K. Crystallographic snapshots of the polythreading framework at various temperatures reveal that, different from the intrinsic transverse vibrations of the subunits of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) that experience NTE via a well-known hinging model, the remarkable NTE effect observed here is the result of a newly-proposed thermally induced relaxation process. During this process, an extreme spring-like contraction of the flexible CB8-based pseudorotaxane units, with an onset temperature of ∼260 K, follows a period of cumulative expansion. More interestingly, compared with MOFs that commonly have relatively strong coordination bonds, due to the difference in the structural flexibility and adaptivity of the weakly bonded U₃(bcbpy)₃(CB8) polythreading framework, U₃(bcbpy)₃(CB8) shows unique time-dependent structural dynamics related to the relaxation process, the first time this has been reported in NTE materials. This work provides a feasible pathway for exploring new NTE mechanisms by using tailored supramolecular host-guest complexes with high structural flexibility and has promise for the design of new kinds of functional metal-organic materials with controllable thermal responsive behaviour.

Switch of Thermal Expansions Triggered by Itinerant Electrons in Isostructural Metal Trifluorides

Manageable thermal expansion (MTE) of metal trifluorides can be achieved by introducing local structure distortion (LSD) in the negative thermal expansion ScF₃. However, an open issue is why isostructural TiF₃, free of LSD, exhibits positive thermal expansion. Herein, a combined analysis of synchrotron X-ray diffraction, X-ray pair distribution function, and rigorous first-principles calculations was performed to reveal the important role of itinerant electrons in mediating soft phonons and lattice dynamics. Metallic TiF₃ demonstrates itinerant electrons and a suppressed Grüneisen parameter γ ≈ -20, while insulating ScF₃ absence of itinerant electrons has a considerable γ ≈ -120. With increasing electron doping concentrations in ScF₃, soft phonons become hardened and the γ is repressed significantly, identical to TiF₃. The presented results update the thermal expansion transition mechanism in framework structure analogues and provide a practical approach to obtaining MTE without inducing sizable structure distortion.

Hydrogen Bond-Driven Order-Disorder Phase Transition in the Near-Room-Temperature Nonlinear Optical Switch [Ag(NH3)2]2SO4

Herein, we report a near-room-temperature nonlinear optical (NLO) switch material, [Ag(NH₃)₂]₂SO₄, exhibiting switching performance with strong room-temperature second harmonic generation (SHG) intensity that outperforms the UV-vis spectral region industry standard KH₂PO₄ (1.4 times stronger). [Ag(NH₃)₂]₂SO₄ undergoes a reversible phase transition (T _c = 356 K) from the noncentrosymmetric room-temperature phase (P4̅2₁ c, RTP) to a centrosymmetric high-temperature phase (I4/mmm, HTP) where both the SO₄ ^2- anions and [Ag(NH₃)₂]⁺ cations are highly disordered. The weakening of hydrogen bond interactions in the HTP is also evidenced by the lower energy shift of the stretching vibration of the N-H···O bonds revealed by the in situ FT-IR spectra. Such weakening leads to an unusual negative thermal expansion along the c axis (-3%). In addition, both the atomic displacement parameters of the single-crystal diffraction data and the molecular dynamics-simulated mean squared displacements suggest the motions of the O and N atoms. Such a structural disorder not only hinders the phonon propagation and dramatically drops the thermal conductivity to 0.22 W m^-1 K^-1 at 361 K but also significantly weakens the optical anisotropy and SHG as verified by the DFT theoretical studies.

Unexpected low thermal expansion coefficients of pentadiamond

A new carbon allotrope, pentadiamond, was recently reported in the literature. Herein, we investigate its thermal expansion and thermoelastic properties by first principles. It is observed that the bulk modulus and hardness of pentadiamond are far less than those of diamond, but the thermal expansion of pentadiamond is lower than that of diamond in the range of 0 K to 2000 K, and even negative in the temperature range of 0-190 K. The negative thermal expansion at low temperature originates from the transverse vibrations of the edge-shared atoms in the coplanar double-pentagon. The low thermal expansion at high temperature is contributed by the strong bonds in pentadiamond. Benefiting from the low thermal expansion, the elastic constants of pentadiamond decrease very slowly with respect to temperature compared with those of diamond. The low sensitivity of thermodynamic and thermoelastic properties to temperature makes pentadiamond a promising material for high anti-thermal-shock and accurate electronic device applications.

Diverse Thermal Expansion Behaviors in Ferromagnetic Cr1-δTe with NiAs-Type, Defective Structures

Negative thermal expansion (NTE) and zero thermal expansion (ZTE) properties are of great significance for the long-life stable operation of precision equipment. However, there are still existing challenges in finding new materials that exhibit NTE or ZTE over a wide temperature range. Here, we report negative, zero, and positive thermal expansion in NiAs-type, defective Cr_1-δTe, containing three compounds: hexagonal CrTe, monoclinic Cr₃Te₄, and trigonal Cr₅Te₈. CrTe shows the NTE behavior from 280 to 340 K with the volume coefficient of thermal expansion α_V = -27.6 × 10^-6 K^-1. Cr₃Te₄ shows the ZTE behavior over a wide temperature range of 180-320 K (α_V = 0.16 × 10^-6 K^-1). And Cr₅Te₈ holds the PTE behavior over the whole temperature range (α_V = 38.5 × 10^-6 K^-1). All of the samples show obvious anisotropic thermal expansion on heating. Combined with the magnetic measurements, it can be confirmed that the NTE and ZTE properties in ferromagnetic Cr_1-δTe originate from the magnetovolume effect (MVE). Such NiAs-type, defective compounds with similar compositions but different structures provide a new perspective for tuning the NTE properties of materials and searching for new materials with ZTE over a wide temperature range.

Negative Thermal Expansion in Fluoroapatite Pb5(VO4)3F Enhanced by the Steric Effect of Pb2

Negative thermal expansion (NTE) is an unusual thermophysical phenomenon and has gained attention as a way of controlling thermal expansion. Here, we report a substantial NTE in fluoroapatite Pb₅(VO₄)₃F in a limited temperature range. The dilatometric study revealed volume shrinkage below 150 K, giving a linear thermal expansion coefficient of α_L = -44 ppm/K in the temperature range from 140 to 120 K upon heating. The NTE behavior is associated with a structural transition from the hexagonal (P6₃/m) phase to the monoclinic (P2₁/b) phase. Such a structural transition has been found in other apatite-type compounds, but the magnitude of the volume change in Pb₅(VO₄)₃F is remarkable. Our structural analysis revealed that the structural transition is classified as an antiferroelectric-to-paraelectric transition and the volume change during the transition is enhanced by the steric effect of 6s² lone-pair electrons of Pb²⁺.

Thermal Enhancement of Luminescence for Negative Thermal Expansion in Molecular Materials

Overcoming thermal quenching is an essential issue in the practical application of luminescent materials. Herein, we found that negative thermal expansion (NTE) can achieve the thermal enhancement of luminescence in molecular materials based on three metal-organic frameworks CuX-bpy (X = Cl, Br, I; bpy = 4,4'-bipyridine). All complexes exhibit NTE on the c-axis, and the strongest NTE leads to a contraction of the Cu...Cu distance in CuCl-bpy, which further intensifies the luminescence emission. This phenomenon indicates the existence of thermally enhanced charge transfer. Moreover, the origin of the distinction in charge transfer attributed to the different valence states of the copper is investigated through the combined studies of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray absorption near-edge structure, and density functional theory calculations. This research provides a new approach to modulating the luminescence thermal enhancement by NTE.

Two-Dimensional Negative Thermal Expansion in a Facile and Low-Cost Oxalate-Based Metal-Organic Framework

Two-dimensional negative thermal expansion (NTE) is achieved in a tetragonal oxalate-based metal-organic framework (MOF), CdZrSr(C₂O₄)₄, within a temperature range from 123 to 398 K [space group I4̅m2, α_a = -2.4(7) M K^-1, α_c = 11.3(3) M K^-1, and α_V = 6.4(1) M K^-1]. By combining variable-temperature X-ray diffraction, a high-resolution synchrotron X-ray pair distribution function, and thermogravimetry-differential scanning calorimetry, we shows that NTE within the ab plane derives from the oriented rotation of an oxalate ligand in zigzag chains (-CdO₈-ox-ZrO₈-ox-)_∞. That is simplified to the Zr atom rotating with an unchanged Zr···Cd distance as the radius, which also gives rise to the deformation of a hingelike connection along the c axis and results in its positive thermal expansion. By virtue of the facile and low-cost oxalate ligand, the present NTE MOF may show application prospects in the future.

Bi0.33Zr2(PO4)3, a negative thermal expansion material with a Nasicon-type structure

A new negative thermal expansion ceramic material, Bi0.33Zr2(PO4)3, with a sodium zirconium phosphate structure, has been investigated and the results are presented.

Molecular tiltation and supramolecular interactions induced uniaxial NTE and biaxial PTE in bis-imidazole-based co-crystals
