Recent Development of Halide Perovskite Materials and Devices for Ionizing Radiation Detection

Interlamellar-Spacing Engineering of Stable and Toxicity-Reduced 2D Perovskite Single Crystal for High-Resolution X-ray Imaging

Two-dimensional (2D) lead halide perovskites are excellent candidates for X-ray detection due to their high resistivity, high ion migration barrier, and large X-ray absorption coefficients. However, the high toxicity and long interlamellar distance of the 2D perovskites limit their wide application in high sensitivity X-ray detection. Herein, we demonstrate stable and toxicity-reduced 2D perovskite single crystals (SCs) realized by interlamellar-spacing engineering via a distortion self-balancing strategy. The engineered low-toxicity 2D SC detectors achieve high stability, large mobility-lifetime product, and therefore high-performance X-ray detection. Specifically, the detectors exhibit a record high sensitivity of 13488 μC Gy1- cm-2, a low detection limit of 8.23 nGy s-1, as well as a high spatial resolution of 8.56 lp mm-1 in X-ray imaging, all of which are far better than those of the high-toxicity 2D lead-based perovskite detectors. These advances provide a new technical solution for the low-cost fabrication of low-toxicity, scalable X-ray detectors.

On the Feasibility of an LCD-Based Real-Time Converter for Ionizing Radiation Imaging

Here we present the cascade converter (CC), which provides real-time imaging of ionizing radiation (IoR) distribution. It was designed and manufactured with the simplest architecture, utilizing liquid crystal display (LCD) technology. Based on two merged substrates with transparent electrodes, armed with functional layers, with the cell filled with nematic liquid crystal, a display-like, IoR-stimulated CC was achieved. The CC comprises low-absorbing polymer substrates (made of polyethylene terephthalate-PET) armed with a transparent ITO electrode covered with a thin semipermeable membrane of polymer (biphenylperfluorocyclobutyl: BP-PFCB) doped with functional nanoparticles (NPs) of Lu2O3:Eu. This stack was covered with a photoconductive layer of α-Se and finally with a thin polyimide (PI) layer for liquid crystal alignment. The opposite substrate was made of LCD-type glass with ITO and polyimide aligning layers. Both substrates form a cell with a twisted structure of nematic liquid crystal (TN) driven with an effective electric field Eeff. An effective electric field driving TN structure is generated with a sum of (1) a bias voltage VBIAS applied to ITO transparent electrodes and (2) the photogenerated additional voltage VXray induced between ITO and α-Se layers with a NPs-doped BP-PFCB polymer layer in-between. The IoR (here, X-ray) conversion into real imaging of the IoR distribution was achieved in the following stages: (1) conversion of IoR distribution into non-ionizing red light emitted with functional NPs, (2) transformation of red light into an electric charge distributed in a layer of the photoconductive α-Se, which is what results in the generation of distributed voltage VXray, and (3) a voltage-mediated, distributed switching of the TN structure observed with the naked eye. The presented imaging device is characterized by a simple structure and a simple manufacturing process, with the potential for use as a portable element of IoR detection and as a dosimeter.

Dion-Jacobson Type Lead-Free Double Perovskite with Ultra-Narrow Aromatic Interlayer Spacing for Highly Sensitive and Stable X-ray Detection

The low-toxic and environmentally friendly 2D lead-free perovskite has made significant progress in the exploration of "green" X-ray detectors. However, the gap in detection performance between them and their lead-based analogues remains a matter of concern that cannot be ignored. To reduce this gap, shortening the interlayer spacing to accelerate the migration and collection of X-ray carriers is a promising strategy. Herein, a Dion-Jacobson (DJ) lead-free double perovskite (4-AP)2AgBiBr8 (1, 4-AP = 4-amidinopyridine) with an ultra-narrow interlayer spacing of 3.0 Å, is constructed by utilizing π-conjugated aromatic spacers. Strikingly, the subsequent enhanced carrier transport and increased crystal density lead to X-ray detectors based on bulk single crystals of 1 with a high sensitivity of 1117.3 µC Gy-1 cm-2, superior to the vast majority of similar double perovskites. In particular, the tight connection of the inorganic layers by the divalent cations enhances structural rigidity and stability, further endowing 1 detector with ultralow dark current drift (3.06 × 10-8 nA cm-1 s-1 V-1, 80 V), excellent multiple cycles switching X-ray irradiation stability, as well as long-term environmental stability (maintains over 94% photoresponse after 90 days). This work brings lead-free double perovskites one step closer to realizing efficient practical green applications.

Cyano-Coordinated Tin Halide Perovskites for Wearable Health Monitoring and Weak Light Imaging

Low-toxicity tin halide perovskites with excellent optoelectronic properties are promising candidates for photodetection. However, tin halide perovskite photodetectors have suffered from high dark current owing to uncontrollable Sn2+ oxidation. Here, 2-cyanoethan-1-aminium iodide (CNI) is introduced in CH(NH2)2SnI3 (FASnI3) perovskite films to inhibit Sn2+ oxidation by the strong coordination interaction between the cyano group (C≡N) and Sn2+. Consequently, FASnI3-CNI films exhibit reduced nonradiative recombination and lower trap density. The self-powered photodetector based on FASnI3-CNI exhibits low dark current (1.04 × 10-9 A cm-2), high detectivity (2.2 × 1013 Jones at 785 nm), fast response speed (2.62 µs), and good stability. Mechanism studies show the increase in the activation energy required for thermal emission and generated carriers, leading to a lower dark current in the FASnI3-CNI photodetector. In addition, flexible photodetectors based on FASnI3-CNI, exhibiting high detectivity and fast response speed, are employed in wearable electronics to monitor the human heart rate under weak light and zero bias conditions. Finally, the FASnI3-CNI perovskite photodetectors are integrated with a 32 × 32 thin-film transistor backplane, capable of ultraweak light (170 nW cm-2) real-time imaging with high contrast, and zero power consumption, demonstrating the great potential for image sensor applications.

Lead-Free Perovskite Single Crystal Linear Array Detector for High-Resolution X-Ray Imaging

0D Bi-based 329-type halide perovskite is demonstrated as a promising semiconductor for X-ray detection due to its strong X-ray absorption, superior stability, availability of large single crystals (SCs) and solution processibility at low temperature. However, its low mobility-lifetime product (µτ) limits its further improvement in detection sensitivity. Based on the first-principles calculations, this work designs a new 2D Bi-based 329-type halide perovskite using a mixed-halide-induced structural dimension regulation strategy. By using a continuous supply of a precursor solution, this work successfully grows inch-sized high-quality SCs. These SCs exhibit large µτ product, high resistivity, and low ion migration. The detectors fabricated using the SCs show X-ray detection sensitivity as high as 24,509 µC Gyair -1 cm-2, short response time of 315 µs, low detection limit of 4.3 nGy s-1, and superior stability. These properties are the best among all lead-free perovskite detectors and are comparable to those of the best lead-based perovskite detectors. The linear array detector assembled on the SCs for the first time also shows a high spatial resolution of 10.6 lp mm-1 during X-ray imaging. The high performance combined with superior stability of these new 329-type lead-free halide perovskite SCs is expected to promote a new generation of X-ray detection technologies.

Synergetic Electrostatic and Steric Effects in α-FAPbI3 Single Crystals For X-Ray Detection and Imaging

It is still challenging to stabilize α-FAPbI3 perovskite for high performance optoelectrical devices. Herein, a novel strategy is proposed utilizing the synergetic electrostatic and steric effect to stabilize the α-FAPbI3 phase and suppress the ion migration. Dimethylamine (DMA+) cations are chosen as the dopant to fabricate FA0.96DMA0.04PbI3 single crystals (SCs). DFT calculations reveal that DMA+ cations can improve the stability of α-FAPbI3 phase in both thermodynamics (lower Gibbs free energy) and kinetics (higher defect formation and migration energy). The resulting SCs exhibit an environmental stability over 100 days and an extraordinary low dark current drift of 3.7 × 10-7 nA cm-1 s-1 V-1, comparable to 2D perovskite SCs. The X-ray detectors have also achieved the-state-of-the-art performance in X-ray detection and imaging. This work demonstrates the significance of electrostatic and steric effects in improving the phase and operational stability of perovskites.

Bulk Photovoltaic Effect Induced by Non-Covalent Interactions in Bilayered Hybrid Perovskite for Efficient Passive X-Ray Detection

Hydrogen bonding as a multifunctional tool has always influenced the structure of hybrid perovskites. Compared with the research on hydrogen bonding, the study of halogen-halogen interactions on the structure and properties of hybrid perovskites is still in its early stages. Herein, a polar bilayered hybrid perovskite (IEA)2FAPb2I7 (IEA+ is 2-iodoethyl-1-ammonium, FA is formamidinium) with iodine-substituted spacer is successfully constructed by changing the configuration of interlayer cations and regulating non-covalent interactions at the organic-inorganic interface, which shows a shorter interlayer spacing and higher density (ρ = 3.862 g cm-3). The generation of structure polarity in (IEA)2FAPb2I7 is caused by the synergistic effect of hydrogen bonding and halogen-halogen interactions. Especially, as the length of the carbon chain in organic cations decreases, the I---I interaction in the system gradually strengthens, which may be the main reason for the symmetry-breaking. Polarity-induced bulk photovoltaics (Voc = 1.0 V) and higher density endow the device based on (I-EA)2FAPb2I7 exhibit a high sensitivity of 175.6 µC Gy-1 cm-2 and an ultralow detection limit of 60.4 nGy s-1 at 0 V bias under X-ray irradiation. The results present a facile approach for designing polar multifunctional hybrid perovskites, also providing useful assistance for future research on halogen-halogen interactions.

Aminoazanium of A-site Cations in Metal-Free Halide Perovskite Single Crystals to Reduce Thermal Expansion for Efficient X-ray Detection

Metal-free perovskites (MFPs) have recently become a newcomer in X-ray detection due to their flexibility and low toxicity characteristics. However, their photoelectronic properties and stability should be further improved mainly through materials design. Here, the aminoazanium of DABCO2+ was developed for the preparation of NDABCO-NH4Br3 (NDABCO = N-amino-N'-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octonium) single crystals (SCs), and its physical properties, intermolecular interactions, and device performance were systematically explored. Notably, NDABCO-NH4Br3 can achieve improved stability by enlarging defect formation energy and inducing abundant intermolecular forces. Moreover, the slight lattice distortion could ensure the weakening electron-phonon coupling for improving carrier transport. In particular, the slight lattice distortion after the long-chain NDABCO2+ introduction could retard thermal expansion for the preparation of high-quality crystals. Finally, the corresponding X-ray detector delivered a moderate sensitivity of 623.3 μC Gyair-1 cm-2. This work provides a novel strategy through rationally designed organic cations to balance the material stability and device performance.

Layered Chalcogenide Scintillators Enabled by Reversible Hydrous-Induced Phase Transformation for High-Resolution X-ray Imaging

Scintillation materials have been widely used in various fields, such as medical diagnosis and industrial detection. Chalcogenides have the potential to become a new generation of high-performance scintillation materials due to their high effective atomic number and good resistance to radiation damage. However, research on their application in radiation detection is currently very scarce. Herein, single crystals of rare earth ion-doped ternary chalcogenides NaGaS2/Eu were grown by a high-temperature solid-phase method. It exhibits unique characteristics of structure transformation by absorbing water molecules from the air. To maintain the anhydrous phase of the material, we have used a strategy of organic-inorganic composites of epoxy resin and NaGaS2/Eu to prepare devices for radiation detection and discuss the irradiation luminescence properties of the two phases. The anhydrous phase of NaGaS2/Eu demonstrates excellent sensitivity to X-rays, with a low detection limit of 250 nGy s-1, which is approximately 1/22 of the medical imaging dose. Additionally, composite flexible films were prepared, which exhibited excellent performance in X-ray imaging. These films enable clear observation of a wide range of objects with a high spatial resolution of up to 13.2 line pairs per millimeter (lp mm-1), indicating that chalcogenide holds promising prospects in the realm of X-ray imaging applications.

Halogen-Regulated Tc and X-ray Radiation Detection in 2D Hybrid Perovskite Ferroelastic Semiconductor

Organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites (OIHPs) have received particular attention due to their characteristic structural tunability and flexibility. These features make OIHPs behave with excellent modifications on macroscopic properties, such as ferroicity or semiconductor performances, etc. Herein, we report two 2D hybrid stibium-based halide perovskite (C3H7N)3Sb2X9 (X = Br, 1; Cl, 2) ferroelastic semiconductor possessing dual switching properties of dielectric and second harmonic generation (SHG). Notably, these two hybrids exhibit halogen-regulated ferroelasticity and semiconductor properties. There is a significant difference in Curie temperature (Tc) and X-ray radiation detection sensitivity (S), i.e., the ΔTc and ΔS are 38 K and 87 μC Gyair-1 cm-2, respectively. Meanwhile, crystals 1 and 2 do not show dark current drift in cyclic measurements of different radiation doses with stable switching ratios of 30 and 10, separately. Meanwhile, these results were proven by scientific experimental results and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Our work presents a facile and practical method to regulate macroproperties on the molecular level, providing a new vision to develop hybrid perovskite ferroic-photoelectric materials.

Efficient Direct X-ray Detection and Imaging Based on a Lead-Free Electron Donor-Acceptor MOF

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have recently gained extensive attention as potential materials for direct radiation detection due to their strong radiation absorption, long-range order, and chemical tunability. However, it remains challenging to develop a practical MOF-based X-ray direct detector that possesses high X-ray detection efficiency, radiation stability, and environmental friendliness. The integration of donor-acceptor (D-A) pairs into crystalline MOFs is a powerful strategy for the precise fabrication of multifunctional materials with unique optoelectronic properties. Herein, a new lead-free MOF, Cu2I2(TPPA) (CuI-TPPA, TPPA = tris[4-(pyridine-4-yl)phenyl]amine), with a 6-fold interpenetrated structure is designed and synthesized based on the electron donor-acceptor strategy. CuI-TPPA has a large mobility-lifetime (μτ) product of 5.8 × 10-4 cm2 V-1 and a high detection sensitivity of 73.1 μC Gyair-1 cm-2, surpassing that of commercial α-Se detectors. Moreover, the detector remains fairly stable with only a 2% reduction in photocurrent under continuous bias irradiation conditions with a total dose of over 42.83 Gyair. The CuI-TPPA/poly(vinylidene fluoride) flexible composite X-ray detector films are successfully manufactured with different thicknesses. Through multifaceted assessments, the optimal thickness is found with a high detection sensitivity of up to 143.6 μC Gyair-1 cm-2. As proof-of-concept, 11 × 9 pixelated X-ray detectors are fabricated on the same composite film to realize X-ray direct imaging. This work opens up potential applications of MOFs in environmentally friendly and wearable devices for direct X-ray detection and imaging.

Mapping Uncharted Lead-Free Halide Perovskites and Related Low-Dimensional Structures

Research on perovskites has grown exponentially in the past decade due to the potential of methyl ammonium lead iodide in photovoltaics. Although these devices have achieved remarkable and competitive power conversion efficiency, concerns have been raised regarding the toxicity of lead and its impact on scaling up the technology. Eliminating lead while conserving the performance of photovoltaic devices is a great challenge. To achieve this goal, the research has been expanded to thousands of compounds with similar or loosely related crystal structures and compositions. Some materials are "re-discovered", and some are yet unexplored, but predictions suggest that their potential applications may go beyond photovoltaics, for example, spintronics, photodetection, photocatalysis, and many other areas. This short review aims to present the classification, some current mapping strategies, and advances of lead-free halide double perovskites, their derivatives, lead-free perovskitoid, and low-dimensional related crystals.

Diffusion of Solute Atoms in an Evaporated Liquid Droplet

Controlling the evaporation of a solvent has made it possible to grow crystals, nanoparticles, and microparticles from liquid droplets. At the heart of this process is the evaporation-induced diffusion of solute atoms, causing the liquid solution of the solute atoms to be in a supersaturated state. In this work, we analyze the mass transport in a spherical liquid droplet, which experiences the loss or evaporation of the solvents across the droplet surface. Using a pseudo-steady-state method, two approximate solutions are derived for the moving boundary problem: one is a linear function of the square of radial variable with a constraint to the loss rate of the solvent, and the other is an exponential function of the square of radial variable without any constraint to the loss rate of the solvent. The numerical results obtained from both approximate solutions are in accord with the numerical results from the finite element method, validating the approximate solutions. The results reveal that a small evaporation/loss rate of the solvent is needed to maintain a relatively uniform distribution of solute atoms in a liquid droplet during the solvent evaporation/loss.

Trinity Strategy: Enabling Perovskite as Hydrophilic and Efficient Fluorescent Nanozyme for Constructing Biomarker Reporting Platform

Water instability and sensing homogeneity are the Achilles' heel of CsPbX3 NPs in biological fluids application. This work reports the preparation of Mn2+:CsPbCl3@SiO2 yolk-shell nanoparticles (YSNPs) in aqueous solutions created through the integration of ligand, surface, and crystal engineering strategies. The SN2 reaction between 4-chlorobutyric acid (CBA) and oleylamine (OAm) yields a zwitterionic ligand that facilitates the dispersion of YSNPs in water, while the robust SiO2 shell enhances their overall stability. Besides, Mn2+ doping in YSNPs not only introduces a second emission center but also enables potential postsynthetic designability, leading to the switching from YSNPs to MnO2@YSNPs with excellent oxidase (OXD)-like activity. Theoretical calculations reveal that electron transfer from CsPbCl3 to in situ MnO2 and the adsorption-desorption process of 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) synergistically amplify the OXD-like activity. In the presence of ascorbic acid (AA), Mn4+ in MnO2@YSNPs (fluorescent nanozyme) is reduced to Mn2+ and dissociated, thereby inhibiting the OXD-like activity and triggering fluorescence "turn-on/off", i.e., dual-mode recognition. Finally, a biomarker reporting platform based on MnO2@YSNPs fluorescent nanozyme is constructed with AA as the reporter molecule, and the accurate detection of human serum alkaline phosphatase (ALP) is realized, demonstrating the vast potential of perovskites in biosensing.

Composition dependence of X-ray stability and degradation mechanisms at lead halide perovskite single crystal surfaces

The multiple applications of lead halide perovskite materials and the extensive use of X-ray based techniques to characterize them highlight a need to understand their stability under X-ray irradiation. Here, we present a study where the X-ray stability of five different lead halide perovskite compositions (MAPbI3, MAPbCl3, MAPbBr3, FAPbBr3, CsPbBr3) was investigated using photoelectron spectroscopy. To exclude effects of thin film formation on the observed degradation behaviors, we studied clean surfaces of single crystals. Different X-ray resistance and degradation mechanisms were observed depending on the crystal composition. Overall, perovskites based on the MA+ cation were found to be less stable than those based on FA+ or Cs+. Metallic lead formed most easily in the chloride perovskite, followed by bromide, and only very little metallic lead formation was observed for MAPbI3. MAPbI3 showed one main degradation process, which was the radiolysis of MAI. Multiple simultaneous degradation processes were identified for the bromide compositions. These processes include ion migration towards the perovskite surface and the formation of volatile and solid products in addition to metallic lead. Lastly, CsBr formed as a solid degradation product on the surface of CsPbBr3.

Substrate Engineering for Chemical Vapor Deposition Growth of Large-Scale 2D Transition Metal Dichalcogenides

The large-scale production of 2D transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) is essential to realize their industrial applications. Chemical vapor deposition (CVD) has been considered as a promising method for the controlled growth of high-quality and large-scale 2D TMDs. During a CVD process, the substrate plays a crucial role in anchoring the source materials, promoting the nucleation and stimulating the epitaxial growth. It thus significantly affects the thickness, microstructure, and crystal quality of the products, which are particularly important for obtaining 2D TMDs with expected morphology and size. Here, an insightful review is provided by focusing on the recent development associated with the substrate engineering strategies for CVD preparation of large-scale 2D TMDs. First, the interaction between 2D TMDs and substrates, a key factor for the growth of high-quality materials, is systematically discussed by combining the latest theoretical calculations. Based on this, the effect of various substrate engineering approaches on the growth of large-area 2D TMDs is summarized in detail. Finally, the opportunities and challenges of substrate engineering for the future development of 2D TMDs are discussed. This review might provide deep insight into the controllable growth of high-quality 2D TMDs toward their industrial-scale practical applications.

Synthesis and Optical Properties of One Year Air-Stable Chiral Sb(III) Halide Semiconductors

Chiral hybrid metal-halide semiconductors (MHS) pose as ideal candidates for spintronic applications owing to their strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC), and long spin relaxation times. Shedding light on the underlying structure-property relationships is of paramount importance for the targeted synthesis of materials with an optimum performance. Herein, we report the synthesis and optical properties of 1D chiral (R-/S-THBTD)SbBr5 (THBTD = 4,5,6,7-tetrahydro-benzothiazole-2,6-diamine) semiconductors using a multifunctional ligand as a countercation and a structure directing agent. (R-/S-THBTD)SbBr5 feature direct and indirect band gap characteristics, exhibiting photoluminescence (PL) light emission at RT that is accompanied by a lifetime of a few ns. Circular dichroism (CD), second harmonic generation (SHG), and piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM) studies validate the chiral nature of the synthesized materials. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed a Rashba/Dresselhaus (R/D) spin splitting, supported by an energy splitting (ER) of 23 and 25 meV, and a Rashba parameter (αR) of 0.23 and 0.32 eV·Å for the R and S analogs, respectively. These values are comparable to those of the 3D and 2D perovskite materials. Notably, (S-THBTD)SbBr5 has been air-stable for a year, a record performance among chiral lead-free MHS. This work demonstrates that low-dimensional, lead-free, chiral semiconductors with exceptional air stability can be acquired, without compromising spin splitting and manipulation performance.

Metal-Free Hydrazinium Halide Perovskitoid Single Crystals for X-ray Detection

Metal-free perovskitoids (MFPs) with N2H5+ as B-site component possess higher crystal density and hydrogen bonding networks and have been recently expanded into X-ray detection. However, research on this material is in its infancy and lacks an understanding of the function of halide components on physical properties and device performance. Here, N2H5-based MFP single crystals (SCs) with different halides are fabricated, and the influence of halides on the crystal structure, band nature, charge transport characteristics, and final device performance is actively explored. Based on theory and experiments, the tolerance factor and octahedral factor jointly determine the octahedral composition. Further, halides with different electronegativities and ionic radii also affect octahedral distortion and energy band bending, further influencing carrier transport and device performance. Finally, a sensitivity of 1284 μC Gyair-1 cm-2 and low detection limits (LoD) of 5.62 μGyair s-1 were obtained by the Br-based device due to its superior physical properties.

Building Block-Inspired Hybrid Perovskite Derivatives for Ferroelectric Channel Layers with Gate-Tunable Memory Behavior

Ferroelectric photovoltaics driven by spontaneous polarization (Ps ) holds a promise for creating the next-generation optoelectronics, spintronics and non-volatile memories. However, photoactive ferroelectrics are quite scarce in single homogeneous phase, owing to the severe Ps fatigue caused by leakage current of photoexcited carriers. Here, through combining inorganic and organic components as building blocks, we constructed a series of ferroelectric semiconductors of 2D hybrid perovskites, (HA)2 (MA)n-1 Pbn Br3n+1 (n=1-5; HA=hexylamine and MA=methylamine). It is intriguing that their Curie temperatures are greatly enhanced by reducing the thickness of inorganic frameworks from MAPbBr3 (n=∞, Tc =239 K) to n=2 (Tc =310 K, ΔT=71 K). Especially, on account of the coupling of room-temperature ferroelectricity (Ps ≈1.5 μC/cm2 ) and photoconductivity, n=3 crystal wafer was integrated as channel field effect transistor that shows excellent a large short-circuit photocurrent ≈19.74 μA/cm2 . Such giant photocurrents can be modulated through manipulating gate voltage in a wide range (±60 V), exhibiting gate-tunable memory behaviors of three current states ("-1/0/1" states). We believe that this work sheds light on further exploration of ferroelectric materials toward new non-volatile memory devices.

Interfacial Engineering Enables Perovskite Heteroepitaxial Growth on Black Phosphorus for Flexible X-ray Detectors

2D materials with atomic-scale thickness and mechanical robustness are required for flexible devices. The superior optoelectronic properties and high-Z atoms in metal halide perovskites render them desirable for X-ray detection, but the intrinsic brittleness is an obstacle hampering the applications in flexible detectors. Herein, an interfacial engineering strategy is demonstrated for the epitaxial growth of methylammonium lead bromide (MAPbBr3 ) on black phosphorus (BP) for flexible X-ray detectors. The mechanically robust, high-quality heterostructure consisting of a Pb transition layer is synthesized for the two-way bridging of BP and MAPbBr3 . Excellent optoelectronic properties such as a high X-ray sensitivity of 1,609 ± 122 µC Gy-1  cm-2 (80 times higher than that of the commercial amorphous Se), a fast response time of 40 ± 5 ms, as well as a low detection limit of 3 µGys-1 (about a fifteenth of the medical chest X-ray dose rate) are achieved from the simple and planar direct X-ray detector fabricated on an organic filter membrane. More importantly, these flat and simple devices are bendable and mechanically durable by exhibiting only 10% photocurrent degradation after 200 bending cycles. The novel heterostructure has great potential in large-area, flexible, and sensitive X-ray detection applications.

Centimeter-Size Single Crystals of Halide Perovskite Photoferroelectric Solid Solution with Ultrahigh Pyroelectricity Boosted Photodetection

Photoferroelectrics, especially emerging halide perovskite ferroelectrics, have motivated tremendous interests owing to their fascinating bulk photovoltaic effect (BPVE) and cross-coupled functionalities. However, solid solutions of halide perovskite photoferroelectrics with controllable structure and enhanced performance are scarcely explored. Herein, through mixing cage cation, a homogeneous halide perovskite photoferroelectric PA2 FAx MA1-x Pb2 Br7 solid solution (PA, FA and MA are CH3 CH2 CH2 NH3 + , NH2 CHNH2 + and CH3 NH3 + , 0≤x≤1) has been developed, which demonstrates tunable Curie temperature in a wide range of 263-323 K and excellent optoelectrical features. As the component adjusted to x=0.7, the bulk crystal demonstrates ultrahigh pyroelectric coefficient up to 1.48 μC cm-2  K-1 around room temperature. Strikingly, benefiting from the light-induced pyroelectricity and remarkable BPVE, a self-powered and sensitive photodetector based solid solution crystals with boosted responsivity and detectivity over than 1300 % has been achieved. This pioneering work sheds light on the exploration of photoferroelectric solid solutions towards high-performance photoelectronic devices.

Unveiling the Fatigue Behavior of 2D Hybrid Organic-Inorganic Perovskites: Insights for Long-Term Durability

2D hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites (HOIPs) are commonly found under subcritical cyclic stresses and suffer from fatigue issues during device operation. However, their fatigue properties remain unknown. Here, the fatigue behavior of (C4 H9 -NH3 )2 (CH3 NH3 )2 Pb3 I10 , the archetype 2D HOIP, is systematically investigated by atomic force microscopy (AFM). It is found that 2D HOIPs are much more fatigue resilient than polymers and can survive over 1 billion cycles. 2D HOIPs tend to exhibit brittle failure at high mean stress levels, but behave as ductile materials at low mean stress levels. These results suggest the presence of a plastic deformation mechanism in these ionic 2D HOIPs at low mean stress levels, which may contribute to the long fatigue lifetime, but is inhibited at higher mean stresses. The stiffness and strength of 2D HOIPs are gradually weakened under subcritical loading, potentially as a result of stress-induced defect nucleation and accumulation. The cyclic loading component can further accelerate this process. The fatigue lifetime of 2D HOIPs can be extended by reducing the mean stress, stress amplitude, or increasing the thickness. These results can provide indispensable insights into designing and engineering 2D HOIPs and other hybrid organic-inorganic materials for long-term mechanical durability.

Extreme γ-Ray Radiation Tolerance of Spectrometer-Grade CsPbBr3 Perovskite Detectors

The perovskite compound CsPbBr3 has recently been discovered as a promising room-temperature semiconductor radiation detector, offering an inexpensive and easy-to-manufacture alternative to the current benchmark material Cd1-x Znx Te (CZT). The performance of CsPbBr3 sensors is evaluated under harsh conditions, such as high radiation doses often found in industrial settings and extreme radiation in space. Results show minimal degradation in detector performance after exposure to 1 Mrad of Co-60 gamma radiation, with no significant change to energy resolution or hole mobility and lifetime. Additionally, many of the devices are still functional after being exposed to a 10 Mrad dose over 3 days, and those that do not survive can still be refabricated into working detectors. These results suggest that the failure mode in these devices is likely related to the interface between the electrode and material and their reaction, or the electrode itself and not the material itself. Overall, the study suggests that CsPbBr3 has high potential as a reliable and efficient radiation detector in various applications, including those involving extreme fluxes and energies of gamma-ray radiation.

Response characteristics of MAPbBr3 direct conversion X-ray detectors based on measurements and Monte Carlo simulation

In recent years, higher requirements have been placed on the response characteristics of X-ray detectors in the field of medical diagnostic imaging. Due to this, high sensitivity, high attenuation coefficient and low cost detection materials need to be developed. In this paper, the geometric model of a detector was established by Geant4 code. The absorption efficiency and mass attenuation coefficient of MAPbBr3 crystals were calculated in the energy range of 30 keV to 100 keV. Compared with the mass attenuation coefficient of the NIST database, the deviation was within 1.39%. The signal charge number and detection sensitivity of the X-ray interaction with the MAPbBr3 crystal ware calculated. Compared with the CdTe crystal and α-Se, the MAPbBr3 crystal still had a larger detection sensitivity under a smaller applied electric field, which was approximately 9 times higher than that of α-Se. This result indicated that the detection sensitivity could be greatly improved by using a high atomic number and high charge mobility-lifetime product. Based on the simulation results, the 2 mm thick MAPbBr3 crystal exhibited the highest detection sensitivity at 60 keV X-rays, which was in agreement with the experimental results.

Centimeter-Sized Single Crystals of Dion-Jacobson Phase Lead-Free Double Perovskite for Efficient X-ray Detection

2D Dion-Jacobson (DJ) phase hybrid perovskites have shown great promise in the photoelectronic field owing to their outstanding optoelectronic performance and superior structural rigidity. However, DJ phase lead-free double perovskites are still a virgin land with direct X-ray detection. Herein, we have designed and synthesized a new DJ phase lead-free layered double perovskite of (HIS)2 AgSbBr8 (1, HIS2+  = histammonium). Centimeter-sized (18 × 10 × 5 mm3 ) single crystals of 1 are successfully grown via the temperature cooling technique, exhibiting remarkable semiconductive characteristics such as a high resistivity (2.2 × 1011  Ω cm), a low trap state density (3.56 × 1010 cm-3 ), and a large mobility-lifetime product (1.72 × 10-3 cm2 V-1 ). Strikingly, its single-crystal-based X-ray detector shows a high sensitivity of 223 µC Gy-1 air cm-2 under 33.3 V mm-1 , a low detection limit (84.2 nGyair s-1 ) and superior anti-fatigue. As far as we know, we firstly demonstrates the potential of 2D DJ phase lead-free hybrid double perovskite in X-ray detection, showing excellent photoelectric response and operational stability. This work will pave a promising pathway to the innovative application of hybrid perovskites for eco-friendly and efficient X-ray detection.
