Ionic Liquids Functionalized MOFs for Adsorption

Grain boundary/doping/architecture engineering in hierarchical N-doped CuO microflowers derived from Cu-based metal-organic framework architectures for highly efficient nonenzymatic glucose detection

Glucose detection is essential in clinical medicine, and the reasonable design of metal oxide electrocatalysts plays a crucial role in developing efficient nonenzymatic glucose (NEG) sensors. Herein, grain boundary/doping/architecture engineering is used to tailor the structures of CuO nanomaterials and tune their surface/electron-transfer properties toward enhanced electrocatalytic oxidation of glucose. Hierarchical N-doped CuO microflowers (N-CuO-MF) are synthesized using a facile hydrothermal method, followed by calcination. N-CuO-MF consist of ultrathin nanoflakes (ca. 20 nm), endowing them with a large specific surface area. Moreover, the nanoflakes are composed of ultrasmall nanoparticles, resulting in abundant grain boundaries. Notably, N-CuO-MF are derived from a precursor of Cu-based metal-organic framework (Cu-MOF) architectures, which is fabricated through a bottom-up route using glycerol as the capping agent/solvent and 1-hexadecyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide ([C16mim]Br) as the template/N source. Glycerol competitively coordinates with Cu2+, leading to the formation of 2D subunits. Moreover, [C16mim]+ cations attach to the subunit surfaces via electrostatic interaction, thus achieving Cu-MOF with a 3D hierarchical structure. As expected, the synergistic effect of rich grain boundaries, N doping, ultrathin nanoflakes, and hierarchical architecture enhances the adsorption of glucose on the electrode surfaces, accelerates electron transfer, and exposes more active sites for glucose oxidation. Accordingly, N-CuO-MF exhibit wide linear ranges, high sensitivity, fast response time, low detection limit, excellent selectivity, and good stability. Owing to their highly efficient electrocatalytic properties, N-CuO-MF could be explored as potential electrocatalysts in NEG sensors for rapid diagnostic tests and health monitoring.

Smart Textile: Electrohydrodynamic Jet Printing of Ionic Liquid-Functionalized Cu3(HHTP)2 Metal-Organic Frameworks for Gas-Sensing Applications

This study presents the development and characterization of a smart textile gas sensor based on the integration of ionic liquid (IL)-functionalized Cu3(HHTP)2 metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), using electrohydrodynamic jet (e-jet) printing. The sensor was designed for the detection of nitric oxide (NO) gas, a critical target in various environmental and safety applications. Cu3(HHTP)2 MOFs were synthesized and subsequently functionalized with 1-Ethyl-3-methylimidazolium trifluoromethanesulfonate (EMIM+ Otf-) ionic liquid to enhance their chemiresistive performance toward NO gas. The functionalized MOF was then e-jet printed onto electrospun polylactic acid (PLA) substrates to fabricate smart textile sensors. The IL-functionalized Cu3(HHTP)2 sensors demonstrated a 582× increase in conductivity compared to previously reported MOF-based sensors. Additionally, IL functionalization enhanced sensor sensitivity, with a response increasing from less than 5% in pristine MOF@PLA sensors to approximately 570% at 100 ppm of NO gas. Performance was systematically evaluated across NO concentrations ranging from 5 to 300 ppm, achieving a theoretical limit of detection of 3.7 ppm. The sensors exhibited partial reversibility and retained functionality over extended periods and under humid conditions. Comprehensive analyses using SEM, EDX, FTIR, and XRD were performed to assess the crystallinity of MOF deposits and elucidate the sensing mechanism. These findings highlight the potential of e-jet printing of IL-functionalized MOFs for the development of advanced, flexible gas sensors with applications in both civilian and military settings and implications for personal protective wearable technologies.

Stable Polyoxometalate-Based Metal-Organic Framework: Synthesis, Modification, and Catalytic Activity

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with polyoxometalates (POMs) as the nodes usually feature a high stability. Those with available space and modifiable groups are expected to serve as a catalytic platform. In this work, a polyoxometalate-based metal-organic framework (POMOF)-bearing channel with a transversal surface of ca. 1.1 × 1.8 nm, [Ni(en)2]4H{[Ni6(tris)(en)3(SIP)1.5][B-α-PW9O34]}2·32H2O (1), was resulted by the collaboration of multiple ligands. The channel was lined with abundant amino groups that bonded with water molecules in it via hydrogen bonds. Compound 1 exhibited excellent thermal and chemical stabilities, which was confirmed by immersion experiments, in situ variable temperature powder X-ray diffraction, and reversible dehydration-hydration behavior. Pristine 1 showed remarkable activity in the hydrogen evolution reaction. According to the presence of amino groups in the channel, 1 was modified by Pd species. Resultantly, Pd was loaded into the channel successfully. The yielding material 1-Pd smoothly catalyzed the Suzuki-Miyaura coupling reactions.

A recent overview of the application of emerging extraction medium-based sample preparation for the determination of aflatoxins and their precursors in food samples

Food safety problem caused by aflatoxins (AFs) has become a major concern worldwide. However, due to the complexity of food matrices and the low concentration of analytes, the accurate and sensitive determination of AFs and their precursors in the biosynthetic pathway is extremely challenging, so the development of efficient sample preparation techniques has been urgently required. This paper reviews the recent advances in sample preparation based on some emerging extraction media for the determination of AFs and their precursors in different food samples, including ionic liquids (ILs) and IL-based composites, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and covalent organic frameworks (COFs). These extraction media can be combined with different sample preparation techniques, such as dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction, solid-phase extraction, and magnetic/dispersive solid-phase extraction, mainly depending on their physicochemical properties. They exhibit efficient extraction and enrichment performance towards AFs and their precursors, which is attributed to their multiple-interaction mechanism and/or porous structure. This review also presents the current challenges and future prospects of these emerging extraction media for sample preparation of AFs and their precursors from food.

Ionic liquid-modified magnetic covalent organic framework for the extraction of four pyrethroids in traditional Chinese herbs

Efficient enrichment of analytes and purification of matrices are crucial for the highly sensitive detection and monitoring of pesticides in traditional Chinese herbs. This work prepared magnetic ionic liquid-controlled covalent organic framework (IL-COF@Fe3O4) as the sorbent via a simple in-situ precipitation polymerization and thiolene "click" strategy. The IL-COF@Fe3O4 exhibited remarkable adsorption performance towards pyrethroids within 5 min. The adsorption of four pyrethroids on the surface of IL-COF@Fe3O4 was according with Langmuir model and pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The adsorption energies were theoretically calculated, which were permethrin>cypermethrin>fenvalerate>bifenthrin. The modification of ILs improved extraction capacity mainly because of the interaction of imidazole and Cl or F and the pore size effect. This method was developed for the rapid extraction of four pyrethroids in Codonopsis pilosula and Angelica sinensis. The linear range was 0.05-200 μg L-1. Matrix effects were ranging from -16.14% to 9.53%, indicating the strong matrix anti-interference ability of IL-COF@Fe3O4.

Hierarchical Fibrous Metal-Organic Framework/Ionic Liquid Membranes for Efficient CO2/N2 Separation

The structural diversity and chemical functionality of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) render them promising candidates for CO2 adsorption and separation. However, their applications are often restricted by their intrinsic fragility and decreased processability. Herein, a hierarchical fibrous MOF/ionic liquid (IL) membrane was constructed by assembling well-ordered ZIF-8 nanounits with an encapsulated IL along the polyimide (PI) fibers. This design promotes the formation of an efficient three-dimensional gas transfer network and generates an abundance of nanopores decorated with CO2-philic units, thereby enhancing the separation of CO2 from N2. The hierarchical fibrous PI/ZIF-8/IL membranes exhibit remarkable structural features, including a large specific surface area of 79.89 m2 g-1, a high porosity of 93.28%, and excellent mechanical stability. Moreover, the PI/ZIF-8/IL membranes demonstrate an enhanced CO2 adsorption capacity of 3.32 mmol/g at 298 K and 1 bar, an excellent CO2/N2 selectivity of 28, and a stable recyclable regeneration capability. The integrated hierarchical pore structure proposed in this study provides a practical direction for the rational design of MOF/IL membranes for targeted gas separation applications.

Comparison of Hydrogen Bonded Organic Framework with Reduced Graphene Oxide-Pd Based Nanocatalyst: Which One Is More Efficient for Entrapment of Nitrophenol Pollutants?

In this study, a Pd nanoparticles@hydrogen-bonded organic framework (Pd NPs@HOF) thin film was fabricated at the toluene-water interface. The HOF was formed through the interaction of trimesic acid (TMA) and melamine (Mel) in the water phase, while Pd(0) was produced from the reduction of [PdCl2(cod)] in the organic phase. The as-synthesized Pd NPs@HOF thin film was demonstrated to be an effective catalyst for the selective reduction of p-nitrophenol and o-nitrophenol to p-aminophenol and o-aminophenol. The porous network of the Pd NPs@HOF introduced strong active sites between Mel, TMA, and Pd(0). Kinetic studies showed that the Pd NPs@HOF catalyst exhibited an enhanced rate of p-nitrophenol and o-nitrophenol reduction in comparison with Pd@reduced-graphene oxide (r-GO) with rates that were 1.7 times faster for p-nitrophenol and 1.5 times faster for o-nitrophenol or even 10 times faster than some Pd-based catalysts, with a maximum conversion of 97.1% which was attributed to the higher porosity and greater surface-to-volume ratio of the Pd NPs@HOF material. Furthermore, π-π stacking interactions enhance the catalytic activity of the Pd NPs@HOF catalyst by increasing the active sites, stabilizing the NPs and trapping the nitrophenols, facilitating the electron transfer, and providing the synergistic effect. Also, contributions of hydrogen bonding, van der Waals forces, electrostatic interactions, and π-σ noncovalent interactions are reasons for better performance of Pd NPs@HOF than Pd/r-GO catalyst with the reduced functional groups.

Thermodynamic regulation of carbon dioxide capture by functionalized ionic liquids

Carbon dioxide capture has attracted worldwide attention because CO2 emissions cause global warming and exacerbate climate change. Ionic liquids (ILs) have good application prospects in carbon capture due to their excellent properties, which provide a new chance to develop efficient and reversible carbon capture systems. This paper reviews the recent progress in CO2 chemical absorption by ILs, such as N-site, O-site, C-site, and multi-site functionalized ILs. The application of thermodynamic regulation methods in CO2 capture is discussed in detail. Among them, the methods of enthalpy regulation are mainly introduced, for which different regulatory targets are proposed for single sites and multiple sites. Furthermore, the strategies of achieving entropy compensation through the design of spatial configurations are discussed. Particular attention is paid to the application of thermodynamic regulation in direct air capture (DAC) due to its great significance. The methods to improve the absorption kinetics are also outlined. Finally, the future development of carbon capture by functionalized ILs is proposed.

Inhalable Metal-Organic Frameworks: A Promising Delivery Platform for Pulmonary Diseases Treatment

Inhalation delivery, offering a direct pathway for administering drugs to the lungs in the form of dry powders or aerosols, stands out as an optimal approach for the localized treatment of pulmonary diseases. However, the intricate anatomical architecture of the lung often poses challenges in maintaining effective drug concentrations within the lungs over extended periods. This highlights the pressing need to develop rational inhalable drug delivery systems that can improve treatment outcomes for respiratory diseases. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) assembled from inorganic metal ions and organic ligands, characterized by customizable porous architecture and chemical composition, modifiable porosity, vast surface area, straightforward surface modification, and adjustable biocompatibility, have garnered extensive attention in the biomedical sphere. The introduction of MOFs into inhalation therapy represents a promising avenue to navigate past the hurdles associated with traditional inhalation methods. Therefore, this review summarizes the characteristics of inhalation delivery together with the latest advances, challenges, and opportunities in utilizing inhalable MOFs for treating lung diseases and discusses prospects in this field alongside the potential pathways for translating this strategy into clinic.

Molecular Mechanism Behind the Capture of Fluorinated Gases by Metal-Organic Frameworks

Fluorinated gases (F-gases) play a vital role in the chemical industry and in the fields of air conditioning, refrigeration, health care, and organic synthesis. However, the direct emission of waste gases containing F-gases into the atmosphere contributes to greenhouse effects and generates toxic substances. Developing porous materials for the energy-efficient capture, separation, and recovery of F-gases is highly desired. Recently, as a highly designable porous adsorbents, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) exhibit excellent selective sorption performance toward F-gases, especially for the recognition and separation of different F-gases with highly similar properties, showing their great potential in F-gases control and recovery. In this review, we discuss the capture and separation of F-gases and their azeotropic, near-azeotropic, and isomeric mixtures in various application scenarios by MOFs, specifically classify and analyze molecular interaction between F-gases and MOFs, and interpret the mechanisms underlying their high performance regarding both adsorption capacity and selectivity, providing a repertoire for future materials design. Challenges faced in the transformation research roadmap of MOFs adsorbent separation technologies toward F-gases are also discussed, and areas for future research endeavors are highlighted.

Imidazole-Functionalized Zn-MOFs for One-Step C2H4 Purification from C2H2/C2H4/C2H6 Ternary Mixture

The discovery of new structures is very important for metal-organic framework (MOF) adsorbents and their application in gas separation, where the design of ligands and the selection of metal ions play a decisive role. Herein, we synthesized two isoreticular Zn-MOFs, UPC-250 and UPC-251, composed of imidazole-based tricarboxylic acid ligands and binuclear zinc clusters. The pore environment was regulated via modifying fluorine atoms at different positions of ligands, and one-step purification of ethylene from acetylene/ethylene/ethane ternary mixture was realized in UPC-251.

Development of the design and synthesis of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) - from large scale attempts, functional oriented modifications, to artificial intelligence (AI) predictions

Owing to the exceptional porous properties of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), there has recently been a surge of interest, evidenced by a plethora of research into their design, synthesis, properties, and applications. This expanding research landscape has driven significant advancements in the precise regulation of MOF design and synthesis. Initially dominated by large-scale synthesis approaches, this field has evolved towards more targeted functional modifications. Recently, the integration of computational science, particularly through artificial intelligence predictions, has ushered in a new era of innovation, enabling more precise and efficient MOF design and synthesis methodologies. The objective of this review is to provide readers with an extensive overview of the development process of MOF design and synthesis, and to present visions for future developments.

Imidazolium-based ionic liquid functionalized chiral metal-organic framework as an efficient catalyst for asymmetric catalytic sulfoxidation

Ionic liquid (IL) units in heterogeneous catalysts exhibit synergistic effects to enhance catalytic performance and stabilize catalytically active centers, while also preventing the degradation of catalysts during the reaction process. Ionic liquid units in IL-functionalized CMOF catalysts enhance their catalytic performance in a synergistic manner. However, not only are the yields of IL-functionalized CMOFs obtained with post-synthesis methods low, but they also lead to blocking of the MOF pores and leaching of the ionic liquid. Hence, we designed and synthesized IL-functionalized chiral Ti(salen)-derivatized dicarboxylic acid as a linker coordinated with zinc nitrate to form ionic liquid functionalized CMOF (IL-Ti(salen) CMOF-n) (n = 1 and 2) catalysts. The synthesised IL-Ti(salen) CMOF-n catalyst was characterized by FT-IR, PXRD, SEM, TEM, TGA and N2 adsorption-desorption, and the catalytic performance of the IL-Ti(salen) CMOF-n was assessed using the asymmetric oxidation of methyl phenyl sulfide as a model reaction and H2O2 as an oxidant. (R)-Methyl phenyl sulfoxide with remarkable chemoselectivity (93%) and enantioselectivity (>99%) was obtained under the optimal reaction conditions. Furthermore, the catalysts demonstrated excellent recyclability after seven consecutive reuses without obvious loss of activity. This work highlights the significance of developing a new type of ionic liquid functionalized chiral heterogeneous catalyst with remarkable catalytic performance, and provides valuable guidance for the design and preparation of novel catalysts for asymmetric catalysis.

Green preparation of magnetic porous carbon by high value utilization of metallurgical waste liquid for efficient extraction of pesticide residues in the environment

Metal-organic frameworks were prepared from Fe-containing waste liquid generated during the refining process of nickel metallurgical slag as a metal source, providing a green treatment method for industrial waste liquid. The Fe-containing waste liquid was used as a raw material for the coordination synthesis of MIL-100(Fe) with 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid, whereas the ionic liquid-modified magnetic porous carbon material (Fe3O4@C/[BMIM]PF6) was prepared by loading [BMIM]PF6 into the pore size of Fe3O4@C obtained by carbonization derivatization. Since Fe3O4@C/[BMIM]PF6 exhibits strong hydrophobicity and contains unsaturated functional groups as well as hydrogen bond acceptors in structure, and a large pore size, it was used as a highly efficient adsorbent for the extraction of trace pyrethroid insecticides in the environment. Fe3O4@C/[BMIM]PF6 demonstrated excellent extraction ability, and the recoveries of the four pyrethroid insecticides in the actual samples analyzed ranged from 85.75 to 112.13%. Fe3O4@C/[BMIM]PF6 has excellent reusability and batch-to-batch reproducibility, and the relative standard deviations for the extraction recoveries of pyrethroids insecticides from the five batches were 2.14%-3.65%. The MIL-100(Fe) synthesized from high-volume preparation experiments exhibited excellent physical/chemical properties. Therefore, the green prepared Fe3O4@C/[BMIM]PF6 based on waste liquid has excellent extraction properties, and the study provides a green and low-energy treatment method for waste liquids generated by metallurgy.

A Highly Selective Ammonia Ratiometric Fluorescence Sensor Based on Multifunctional Metal-Organic Framework Platform with Rich Brønsted Acidic Metal Clusters

Ammonia is a critical chemical in industry and our daily life, but its corrosiveness and toxicity also require enough attention. With the increasing pursuit of beauty, the safety of cosmetics has aroused widespread concern. Aqueous ammonia has been widely used as a universal additive in cosmetics, especially in different types of hair dye products. However, a high concentration of ammonia is toxic to human beings. In addition, improper treatment and discharge of substances with high ammonia content can also cause pollution of human domestic water. Therefore, it is of great significance to accurately monitor the level of aqueous ammonia in relative cosmetics for safe beauty and in our domestic water for daily health. In this work, a highly selective and sensitive ratiometric fluorescent sensor UiO-66-NH2@O170 was carefully designed to quickly and accurately detect the concentration of aqueous ammonia in different brands of hair dyes and human domestic water. The detection limit was as low as 83.5 nM, and the recovery rate ranged from 98.2 to 102.9%. In addition, while evaluating the actual application performance of the sensor, a novel detection mechanism based on the rich Brønsted acidic response sites on the metal clusters of the fluorescent MOF materials was demonstrated here.

Pyridyl/Pyrimidyl-Containing Ligands Modulating Two Cd(II)-MOFs with Distinct Architectures and Al3+ Sensing Abilities

It is a challenging task to develop metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with fascinating architectures and outstanding performance. In this work, two novel Cd(II)-MOFs, [Cd2(L1)(BDC)2·1.5i-PrOH]n (1) and [Cd(L2)0.5(BDC)(H2O)]n (2), with distinct sensing performances are successfully synthesized by pyridyl/pyrimidyl-containing functional ligands 9,10-bis(di(pyridine-4-yl)methylene)-9,10-dihydroanthracene (L1) and 9,10-bis(di(pyrimidin-5-yl)methylene)-9,10-dihydroanthracene (L2). 1 exhibits a 3D (4,6,10)-connected multicylindrical framework with compartments, constructed by 4-connected L1 and BDC2- in modes A and B, 6-connected Cd1, and 10-connected [Cd2(COO)2]2+. 2 is fabricated by 4-connected BDC2-, 7-connected Cd, and L2 bridges to generate a 3D (4,7)-connected pillar-layered framework with uncoordinated pyrimidyl N active sites. More importantly, their topologies have not been reported thus far. 1 and 2 have excellent water, pH, and thermal stabilities. 1 can efficiently sense TNP and MDZ in H2O, but its Al3+ sensing ability is relatively average. In sharp contrast, 2 has ultrahigh Al3+ sensitivity. Its limit of detection (LOD) toward Al3+ (2.93 × 10-7 M) is nearly 2 orders of magnitude and 25 times lower than that of 1 (1.18 × 10-5 M) and the WHO's maximum Al3+ limit (7.41 × 10-6 M) in drinking water, respectively. Their sensing mechanisms and different sensing performances are explored in depth.

Three in one: engineering MOF channels via coordinated water arrays for regulated separation of alkanes and alkenes

Purifying alkenes (mainly ethylene and propylene) by removing their corresponding alkanes is crucial yet challenging in the chemical industry. Selective physisorption shows promise for effective separation but demands precise pore dimensions and/or pore chemistry of adsorbents. We report an yttrium-based metal-organic framework, Y2(TCHB)(OH)2·2H2O (HIAM-317, TCHB = 3,3',5,5'-tetrakis(4-carboxyphenyl)-2,2',4,4',6,6'-hexamethyl-1,1'-biphenyl), that can separate ethylene/ethane and propylene/propane via mechanisms regulated by coordinated water arrays. In the presence of coordinated water arrays, HIAM-317 sieves alkanes from alkenes. When fully activated by removing coordinated water arrays, it selectively adsorbs ethane over ethylene and propylene over propane. This separation ability has been experimentally verified, and the underlying mechanism was uncovered through theoretical calculations and modeling.

Recent Advances of Carbon Capture in Metal-Organic Frameworks: A Comprehensive Review

The excessive emission of greenhouse gases, which leads to global warming and alarms the world, has triggered a global campaign for carbon neutrality. Carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) technology has aroused wide research interest as a versatile emission mitigation technology. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), as a new class of high-performance adsorbents, hold great potential for CO2 capture from large point sources and ambient air due to their ultra-high specific surface area as well as pore structure. In recent years, MOFs have made great progress in the field of CO2 capture and separation, and have published a number of important results, which have greatly promoted the development of MOF materials for practical carbon capture applications. This review summarizes the most recent advanced research on MOF materials for carbon capture in various application scenarios over the past six years. The strategies for enhancing CO2 selective adsorption and separation of MOFs are described in detail, along with the development of MOF-based composites. Moreover, this review also systematically summarizes the highly concerned issues of MOF materials in practical applications of carbon capture. Finally, future research on CO2 capture by MOF materials is prospected.

Defect-Engineered MOF-801/Sodium Alginate Aerogel Beads for Boosting Adsorption of Pb(II)

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are attractive adsorbents for heavy metal capture due to their superior stability, easy modification, and adjustable pore size. However, their inherent microporous structure poses challenges in achieving a higher adsorption capacity. Defect engineering is considered a simple method to create hierarchical MOFs with larger pores. Here, we employed l-aspartic acid as a mixed linker to bind Zr4+ clusters in competition with fumaric acid of MOF-801 to create defects, and the pore size was increased from 4.66 to 15.65 nm. Mercaptosuccinic acid was subsequently used as a postexchange ligand to graft the resultant MOF-801 by acid-ammonia condensation to further expand the pore size to 22.73 nm. Notably, the -NH2, -COOH, and -SH groups contributed by these two ligands increased the adsorption sites for Pb(II). The obtained defective MOF-801 with larger pores was thereafter loaded onto sodium alginate to form aerogel beads as adsorbents, and an adsorption capacity of 375.48 mg/g for Pb(II) was achieved, which is ∼51 times that of pristine MOF-801. The aerogel beads also exhibited outstanding reusability with a removal efficiency of ∼90.23% after 5 cycles of use. The adsorption mechanism of Pb(II) included ion-exchange interaction, as well as chelation interactions of Pb-O, Pb-NH2, and Pb-S. The versatile combination of defect engineering and composite beads provides novel inspirations for MOF modification for boosting heavy metal adsorption.

Rise of Metal-Organic Frameworks: From Synthesis to E-Skin and Artificial Intelligence

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have attained broad research attention in the areas of sensors, resistive memories, and optoelectronic synapses on the merits of their intriguing physical and chemical properties. In this review, recent progress on the synthesis of MOFs and their electronic applications is introduced and discussed. Initially, the crystal structures and properties of MOFs encompassing optical, electrical, and chemical properties are discussed in brief. Subsequently, advanced synthesis methods for MOFs are introduced, categorized into hydrothermal approach, microwave synthesis, mechanochemical synthesis, and electrochemical deposition. After that, the various roles of MOFs in widespread applications, including sensing, information storage, optoelectronic synapses, machine learning, and artificial intelligence, are discussed, highlighting their versatility and the innovative solutions they provide to long-standing challenges. Finally, an outlook on remaining challenges and a future perspective for MOFs are proposed.

Integrated "all-in-one" strategy to construct highly efficient Pd catalyst for CO2 transformation

The synthesis of high-value chemicals featuring C-C and/or C-heteroatom bonds via CO2 is critically important, yet efficiently converting thermodynamically stable and kinetically inert linear CO2 and propargylic amine to the heterocyclic compound 2-oxazolidinone with an integrated catalytic system continues to pose a considerable challenge. Herein, we have designed an "all-in-one" (AIO) palladium (Pd) catalyst (Cat1), distinguished by its co-coordination with acetylglucose (AcGlu) and bis(benzimidazolium) units at the Pd center, which promotes the cyclization of CO2 and propargylic amine achieving a highest turnover frequency (TOF) of up to 3456 h-1. Moreover, Cat1 demonstrates excellent stability across various temperatures, with its catalytic activity remaining unchanged even after 10 cycles. The catalyst Cat1 simultaneously activates propargylic amine and CO2, facilitating the formation of N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC)-CO2 adducts and AcGlu-CO2 philes from CO2 in simulated flue gas, a key factor in reaching unprecedented TOF values. The catalytic mechanism was elucidated through quasi-in-situ NMR and 13C-isotope labeling experiments. Notably, this is the first instance of an AIO Pd catalyst that enables the simultaneous capture, activation, and catalytic conversion of in-situ activated CO2 along with propargylic amine. The design strategy of this AIO catalyst introduces a novel approach to overcoming the challenges in the efficient conversion of inert CO2.

Reactive capture and electrochemical conversion of CO2 with ionic liquids and deep eutectic solvents

Ionic liquids (ILs) and deep eutectic solvents (DESs) have tremendous potential for reactive capture and conversion (RCC) of CO2 due to their wide electrochemical stability window, low volatility, and high CO2 solubility. There is environmental and economic interest in the direct utilization of the captured CO2 using electrified and modular processes that forgo the thermal- or pressure-swing regeneration steps to concentrate CO2, eliminating the need to compress, transport, or store the gas. The conventional electrochemical conversion of CO2 with aqueous electrolytes presents limited CO2 solubility and high energy requirement to achieve industrially relevant products. Additionally, aqueous systems have competitive hydrogen evolution. In the past decade, there has been significant progress toward the design of ILs and DESs, and their composites to separate CO2 from dilute streams. In parallel, but not necessarily in synergy, there have been studies focused on a few select ILs and DESs for electrochemical reduction of CO2, often diluting them with aqueous or non-aqueous solvents. The resulting electrode-electrolyte interfaces present a complex speciation for RCC. In this review, we describe how the ILs and DESs are tuned for RCC and specifically address the CO2 chemisorption and electroreduction mechanisms. Critical bulk and interfacial properties of ILs and DESs are discussed in the context of RCC, and the potential of these electrolytes are presented through a techno-economic evaluation.

Molecule Engineering Metal-Organic Framework-Based Organic Photoelectrochemical Transistor Sensor for Ultrasensitive Bilirubin Detection

The functionalization of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with organic small molecules by in situ postsynthetic modification has garnered considerable attention. However, the precise engineering of recognition sites using this method remains rarely explored in optically controlled bioelectronics. Herein, employing the Schiff base reaction to embed the small molecule (THBA) into a Zr-MOF, we fabricated a hydroxyl-rich MOF on the surface of titanium dioxide nanorod arrays (U6H@TiO2 NRs) to develop light-sensitive gate electrodes with tailored recognition capabilities. The U6H@TiO2 NR gate electrodes were integrated into organic photoelectrochemical transistor (OPECT) sensing systems to tailor a sensitive device for bilirubin (I-Bil) detection. In the presence of I-Bil, coordination effects, hydrogen bonding, and π-π interactions facilitated strong binding between U6H@TiO2 NRs and the target I-Bil. The electron-donating property of I-Bil influenced the gate voltage, enabling precise control of the channel status and modulation of the channel current. The OPECT device exhibited exceptional analytical performance toward I-Bil with wide linearity ranging from 1 × 10-16 to 1 × 10-9 M and a low limit detection of 0.022 fM. Leveraging the versatility of small molecules for boosting the functionalization of materials, this work demonstrates the great potential of the small molecule family for OPECT bioanalysis and holds promise for the advancement of OPECT sensors.

Microporous Materials in Polymer Electrolytes: The Merit of Order

Solid-state batteries (SSBs) have garnered significant attention in the critical field of sustainable energy storage due to their potential benefits in safety, energy density, and cycle life. The large-scale, cost-effective production of SSBs necessitates the development of high-performance solid-state electrolytes. However, the manufacturing of SSBs relies heavily on the advancement of suitable solid-state electrolytes. Composite polymer electrolytes (CPEs), which combine the advantages of ordered microporous materials (OMMs) and polymer electrolytes, meet the requirements for high ionic conductivity/transference number, stability with respect to electrodes, compatibility with established manufacturing processes, and cost-effectiveness, making them particularly well-suited for mass production of SSBs. This review delineates how structural ordering dictates the fundamental physicochemical properties of OMMs, including ion transport, thermal transfer, and mechanical stability. The applications of prominent OMMs are critically examined, such as metal-organic frameworks, covalent organic frameworks, and zeolites, in CPEs, highlighting how structural ordering facilitates the fulfillment of property requirements. Finally, an outlook on the field is provided, exploring how the properties of CPEs can be enhanced through the dimensional design of OMMs, and the importance of uncovering the underlying "feature-function" mechanisms of various CPE types is underscored.

Ultrasound-assisted synthesis of a Eu3+-functionalized ZnII coordination polymer as a fluorescent dual detection probe for highly sensitive recognition of HgII and L-Cys

A new ZnII coordination polymer (CP) based on 2,3-pyrazine dicarboxylic acid (H2pzdc) and 4,4'-bipyridine (bpy) (ZCP) was synthesized using a facile slow evaporation method. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction revealed that ZCP is a two-dimensional porous CP, [Zn2(pzdc)2(bpy)(H2O)2]n, with van der Waals forces as the dominant interaction within its layers forming a 63 network. Employing energetic ultrasound irradiation, nanoscale ZCP (nZCP) was successfully synthesized and Eu3+ ions were incorporated within its host lattice (Eu@nZCP). The resulting platform exhibits superior fluorescence characteristics and demonstrates notable optical durability. Therefore, it was used as a dual detection fluorescent sensing platform for the detection of mercury and L-cysteine (L-Cys) in aqueous media through a turn-off/on strategy. In the turn-off process, the fluorescence emission of Eu@nZCP progressively quenches by the addition of HgII via a photo-induced electron transfer (PET) mechanism. The fluorescence of Eu@nZCP is quenched to establish a low fluorescence background through the incorporation of HgII. This devised turn-on fluorescent system is suitable for the recognition of L-Cys (based on the strong affinity of L-Cys to the HgII ion) through a quencher detachment mechanism. This method attained a relatively wide linear range, spanning from 0.001 to 25 µM, with the low detection limit of 5 nM for the sensing of HgII. Also, the corresponding limit of detection (LOD) for L-Cys is 8 nM in a relatively wide linear range, spanning from 0.001 to 40 µM.

Ionic Liquid Modified Fe-Porphyrinic Metal-Organic Frameworks as Efficient and Selective Photocatalysts for CO2 Reduction

Porphyrin-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are ideal platforms for heterogeneous photocatalysts toward CO2 reduction. To further explore photocatalytic MOF systems, it is also necessary to consider their ability to fine-tune the microenvironments of the active sites, which affects their overall catalytic operation. Herein, a kind of ionic liquid (IL, here is 3-butyric acid-1-methyl imidazolium bromide, BAMeImBr) was anchored to iron-porphyrinic Zr-MOFs with different amounts to obtain ILx@MOF-526 (MOF-526 = Zr6O4(OH)4(FeTCBPP)3, FeTCBPP = iron 5,10,15,20-tetra[4-(4'-carboxyphenyl)phenyl]-porphyrin, x = 100, 200, and 400). ILx@MOF-526 series was designed to investigate the effects of the microenvironmental and electronic structural modification on the efficiency and selectivity of the photochemical reduction of CO2 after introducing IL fragments. Compared to parent MOF-526, the production and selectivity of CO were greatly improved in the absence of any photosensitizer under visible light by the ILx@MOF-526 series. Among them, the CO yield of IL200@MOF-526 was up to 14.0 mmol g-1 within 72 h with a remarkable CO selectivity of 97%, which is superior to that of MOF-526 without BAMeIm+ modification and other amounts of BAMeIm+ loaded. Furthermore, density functional theory calculations were performed to study the mechanism of the CO2 reduction.

Self-assembly of metal-polyphenolic network on biomass for enhanced organic contaminant capturing from water with a high cost-to-benefit ratio

Nanomaterials present a vast potential as functional materials in environmental engineering. However, there are challenges with nanocomplex for recyclability, reliable/stable, and scale-up industrial integration. Here, a versatile, low-cost, stable and recycled easily metal-polyphenolic-based material carried by wood powder (bioCar-MPNs) adsorption platform was nano-engineered by a simple, fast self-assembly strategy, in which wood powder is an excellent substrate serving as a scaffold and stabilizer to prevent the nanocomplex from aggregating and is easier to recycle. Life cycle analysis highlights a green preparation process and environmental sustainability for bioCar-MPNs. The metal-polyphenolic nanocomplex coated on the wood surface in bioCar-MPNs presents a remarkable surface adsorption property (1829.4 mg/g) at a low cost (2.4 US dollars per 1000 g bioCar-MPNs) for organic dye. Quartz crystal microbalance analysis (QCM) demonstrates an existing strong affinity between polyphenols and organic dyes. Furthermore, Independent Gradient Model (IGM) and Hirshfeld surface analysis reveal the presence of the electrostatic interactions, π-π interactions, and hydrogen bonding. Meanwhile, adsorption efficiency of bioCar-MPNs maintains over 95% in the presence of co-existing ions (Na+, 0.5 M). Importantly, the reasonable utilization of biomass for water treatment can contribute to achieving the high-value and resource utilization of biomass materials.

Improving the removal efficiency of oxygenated volatile organic compounds by defective UiO-66 regulated with water

The purification of oxygenated volatile organic compounds VOCs (OVOCs), important precursors of ozone and particulate matters, has triggered intensive research interests. UiO-66 with high photocatalytic activity have shown great potential. However, the lack of active sites severely limited the trapping and degradation of OVOCs. Herein, reo-UiO-66 with increased specific surface area, hierarchical porous structure and tunable acidic/basic sites was synthesized by simply adding water as the modulator. XRD, TGA and FTIR results confirmed the formation of reo-defects, which significantly affected the surface hydrophilicity and active sites of UiO-66. The adsorption of Lewis acidic acetaldehyde was enhanced by 265 times with coordinative unsaturated Zr acting as the dominant adsorption sites. The degradation efficiency of typical OVOCs (acetaldehyde and acetone) increased from 0% and 25% to 50% and 73%, respectively. This work provided a facile method to modulate the micro-environment in MOFs for the efficient capture and catalytic purification of OVOCs.

In-situ growth of metal-organic frameworks on cellulose nanofiber aerogels for rapid adsorption of heterocyclic aromatic amines

Heterocyclic aromatic amines (HAAs) are the main carcinogens produced during thermal processing of protein-rich foods. In this paper, a composite aerogel (TOCNFCa) with a stabilized dual-network structure was prepared via a template for the in-situ synthesis of UiO-66 on cellulose for the adsorption of HAAs in food. The dual-network structure of TOCNFCa provides the composite aerogel with excellent wet strength, maintaining excellent compressive properties. With the in-situ grown UiO-66 content up to 71.89 wt%, the hierarchical porosity endowed TOCNFCa@UiO-66 with the ability to rapidly adsorb HAAs molecules with high capacity (1.44-5.82 μmol/g). Based on excellent thermal stability, adsorption capacity and anti-interference, TOCNFCa@UiO-66 achieved satisfactory recoveries of HAAs in the boiled marinade, which is faster and more economical than the conventional SPE method. Moreover, TOCNFCa@UiO-66 could maintain 84.55 % of the initial adsorption capacity after 5 times of reuse.

Fundamental, mechanism and development of hydration lubrication: From bio-inspiration to artificial manufacturing

Friction and lubrication are ubiquitous in all kinds of movements and play a vital role in the smooth operation of production machinery. Water is indispensable both in the lubrication systems of natural organisms and in hydration lubrication systems. There exists a high degree of similarity between these systems, which has driven the development of hydration lubrication from biomimetic to artificial manufacturing. In particular, significant advancements have been made in the understanding of the mechanisms of hydration lubrication over the past 30 years. This enhanced understanding has further stimulated the exploration of biomimetic inspiration from natural hydration lubrication systems, to develop novel artificial hydration lubrication systems that are cost-effective, easily transportable, and possess excellent capability. This review summarizes the recent experimental and theoretical advances in the understanding of hydration-lubrication processes. The entire paper is divided into three parts. Firstly, surface interactions relevant to hydration lubrication are discussed, encompassing topics such as hydrogen bonding, hydration layer, electric double layer force, hydration force, and Stribeck curve. The second part begins with an introduction to articular cartilage in biomaterial lubrication, discussing its compositional structure and lubrication mechanisms. Subsequently, three major categories of bio-inspired artificial manufacturing lubricating material systems are presented, including hydrogels, polymer brushes (e.g., neutral, positive, negative and zwitterionic brushes), hydration lubricant additives (e.g., nano-particles, polymers, ionic liquids), and their related lubrication mechanism is also described. Finally, the challenges and perspectives for hydration lubrication research and materials development are presented.

Interfacial Engineering of Heterogeneous Reactions for MOF-on-MOF Heterostructures

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), as a subclass of porous crystalline materials with unique structures and multifunctional properties, play a pivotal role in various research domains. In recent years, significant attention has been directed toward composite materials based on MOFs, particularly MOF-on-MOF heterostructures. Compared to individual MOF materials, MOF-on-MOF structures harness the distinctive attributes of two or more different MOFs, enabling synergistic effects and allowing for the tailored design of diverse multilayered architectures to expand their application scope. However, the rational design and facile synthesis of MOF-on-MOF composite materials are in principle challenging due to the structural diversity and the intricate interfaces. Hence, this review primarily focuses on elucidating the factors that influence their interfacial growth, with a specific emphasis on the interfacial engineering of heterogeneous reactions, in which MOF-on-MOF hybrids can be conveniently obtained by using pre-fabricated MOF precursors. These factors are categorized as internal and external elements, encompassing inorganic metals, organic ligands, lattice matching, nucleation kinetics, thermodynamics, etc. Meanwhile, these intriguing MOF-on-MOF materials offer a wide range of advantages in various application fields, such as adsorption, separation, catalysis, and energy-related applications. Finally, this review highlights current complexities and challenges while providing a forward-looking perspective on future research directions.

A Multifunctional CaII-EuIII Heterometallic Organic Framework with Sensing and Selective Adsorption in Water

With increasing global industrialization, it is urgent and challenging to develop multifunctional species for detection and adsorption in the environment. For this purpose, a novel anionic heterometallic organic framework, [(CH3)2NH2][CaEu(CAM)2(H2O)2]·4H2O·4DMF (CaEuCAM), is hydrothermally synthesized based on chelidamic acid (H3CAM). Single crystal analysis shows that CaEuCAM features two different oxygen-rich channels along the c-axis in which one CAM3- bridges two sextuple-coordinated Ca2+ and two octuple-coordinated Eu3+ with a μ4-η1: η1: η1: η1: η1: η1 new chelating and bridging mode. The characteristic bright red emission and superior hydrostability of CaEuCAM under harsh acidic and basic conditions benefit it by acting as a highly sensitive sensor for Fe3+ and 3-nitrophenol (3-NP) with extremely low LODs through remarkable quenching. The combination of experiments and theoretical calculations for sensing mechanisms shows that the competitive absorption and interaction are responsible for Fe3+-induced selective emission quenching, while that for 3-NP is the result of the synergism of host-guest chemistry and the inner filter effect. Meanwhile, the assimilation of negative charge plus channels renders CaEuCAM a highly selective adsorbent for methylene blue (MB) due to a synergy of electrostatic affinity, ion-dipole interaction, and size matching. Of note is the reusability of CaEuCAM toward Fe3+/3-NP sensing and MB adsorption besides its fast response. These findings could be very useful in guiding the development of multifunctional Ln-MOFs for sensing and adsorption applications in water media.

New Adsorption Materials for Deep Desulfurization of Fuel Oil

In recent years, due to the rapid growth of mankind's demand for energy, harmful gases (SOx) produced by the combustion of sulfur-containing compounds in fuel oil have caused serious problems to the ecological environment and human health. Therefore, in order to solve this hidden danger from the source, countries around the world have created increasingly strict standards for the sulfur content in fuel. Adsorption desulfurization technology has attracted wide attention due to its advantages of energy saving and low operating cost. This paper reviewed the latest research progress on various porous adsorption materials. The future challenges and research directions of adsorption materials to meet the needs of clean fuels are proposed.

Ionic-liquid-modified MOFs incorporated in a mixed-matrix membrane by metal-site anchoring for gas separation

Through metal-site anchoring, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) were modified with ionic liquids (ILs) and used as a porous filler to prepare mixed-matrix membranes (MMMs). The targeted growth of the IL exposed more active sites and greatly enhanced CO2 transfer in the MMMs, which exhibited excellent gas separation performance and long durability.

On the Diffusion of Ionic Liquids in ILs@ZIF-8 Composite Materials: A Density Functional Theory Study

Recently, composite materials consisting of ionic liquids (ILs) and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have attracted a great deal of attention due to their fantastic properties. Many theoretical studies have been performed on their special structures and gas separation applications. Yet, the mechanism for the diffusion of ILs inside MOF channels still remains unclear. Here, the DFT calculations (e.g., rigid and relaxed potential energy surface, PES, scan) together with frontier orbital analysis, natural charge analysis, and energy decomposition analysis were performed to investigate the diffusion behavior of a typical IL, [C4mim][PF6], into the ZIF-8 SOD cage. The PES profiles indicate that it is quite difficult for the cation [C4min]+ to diffuse into the cage of ZIF-8 through the pristine pores because of the large imidazole steric hindrance, which results in a large energy barrier of ca. 40 kcal·mol-1 at the least. Interestingly, the PES reveals that a successful diffusion could be obtained by thermal contributions, which enlarge the pore size through swing effects at higher temperatures. For example, both [C4mim]+ and [PF6]- could easily diffuse through the channel of the ZIF-8 SOD cage when the pore size was increased to 6.9 Å. Subsequently, electronic structure analyses reveal that the main interactions between [PF6]- or [C4mim]+ and ZIF-8 are the steric repulsion interactions. Finally, the effects of the amounts of [C4mim][PF6] on the ZIF-8 structures were investigated, and the results show that two pairs of [C4mim][PF6] per SOD cage are the most stable in terms of the interaction between energies and structural changes. With these findings, we propose that the high-temperature technique could be employed during the synthesis of IL@MOF membranes, to enrich their family members and their industrial applications.

Fe, N, S co-doped carbon network derived from acetate-modified Fe-ZIF-8 for oxygen reduction reaction

In this work, potassium acetate (KAc) was added during the synthesis of a Zn-Fe based metal-organic framework (Fe-ZIF-8) to increase the fixed amount of Fe while simultaneously enhancing the number of pores. Electrospinning was utilized to embed KAc-modified Fe-ZIF-8 (Fe-ZIF-8-Ac) into the polyacrylonitrile nanofiber mesh, to obtain a network composite (Fe@NC-Ac) with hierarchical porous structure. Fe@NC-Ac was co-pyrolyzed with thiourea, resulting in Fe, N, S co-doped carbon electrocatalyst. The electrochemical tests indicated that the prepared catalyst displayed relatively remarkable oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalytic activity, with an onset potential (Eonset) of 1.08 V (vs. reversible hydrogen electrode, RHE) and a half-wave potential (E1/2) of 0.94 V, both higher than those of the commercial Pt/C (Eonset = 0.95 V and E1/2 = 0.84 V), respectively. Assembled into Zn-air batteries, the optimized catalyst exhibited higher open circuit voltage (1.698 V) and peak power density (90 mW cm-2) than those of the commercial 20 wt% Pt/C (1.402 V and 80 mW cm-2), respectively. This work provided a straightforward manufacturing strategy for the design of hierarchical porous carbon-based ORR catalysts with desirable performance.

Design and application of metal organic frameworks for heavy metals adsorption in water: a review

The growing apprehension surrounding heavy metal pollution in both environmental and industrial contexts has spurred extensive research into adsorption materials aimed at efficient remediation. Among these materials, Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) have risen as versatile and promising contenders due to their adjustable properties, expansive surface areas, and sustainable characteristics, compared to traditional options like activated carbon and zeolites. This exhaustive review delves into the synthesis techniques, structural diversity, and adsorption capabilities of MOFs for the effective removal of heavy metals. The article explores the evolution of MOF design and fabrication methods, highlighting pivotal parameters influencing their adsorption performance, such as pore size, surface area, and the presence of functional groups. In this perspective review, a thorough analysis of various MOFs is presented, emphasizing the crucial role of ligands and metal nodes in adapting MOF properties for heavy metal removal. Moreover, the review delves into recent advancements in MOF-based composites and hybrid materials, shedding light on their heightened adsorption capacities, recyclability, and potential for regeneration. Challenges for optimization, regeneration efficiency and minimizing costs for large-scale applications are discussed.

Potential of ionic liquids as emerging green solvent for the pretreatment of lignocellulosic biomass

Lignocellulosic biomass is available in abundance as a renewable resource, but the major portion of it is often discarded as waste without utilizing its immense potential as an alternative renewable energy resource. To overcome recalcitrance of lignocellulosic biomass, various pretreatment methods are applied to it, so that the complex and rigid polymeric structure can be broken down into fractions susceptible for enzymatic hydrolysis. Effective and efficient biomass processing is the goal of pretreatment methods, but none of the explored pretreatment methods are versatile enough to fulfil the requirement of biomass processing with greater flexibility in terms of operational cost and desired output efficiency. Deployment of green solvents such as ionic liquids for the pretreatment of lignocellulosic biomass has been a topic of discussion amongst the scientific community in recent times. The presented work provides a detailed overview on the deployment of ionic liquid for the pretreatment of lignocellulosic biomass coupled with a brief discussion on other pretreatments methods. The recyclability and reusability along with other unique properties makes an ionic liquid pretreatment different from the other traditional pretreatment methods. Also, this study explores diverse critical parameters that governs the dissolution process of biomass. Hazardous properties of ionic liquids have also been explored. Future perspective and recommendations have been given for an efficient, effective, and eco-friendly deployment of ionic liquid in biomass pretreatment process.

Studies on Composite Solid Electrolytes with a Dual Selective Confinement Interface Structure of Anions for High-Performance Lithium Metal Batteries

Solid-state lithium batteries (SSLBs) have attracted much attention due to their good thermal stability and high energy density. However, solid-state electrolytes with low conductivity and prominent interfacial issues have hindered the further development of SSLBs. In this research, inspired from a selective confinement structure of anions, a novel HMOF-DNSE composite solid electrolyte with a dual selective confinement interface structure is proposed based on the semi-interpenetrating structure generated by poly(vinylidene fluoride)-hexafluoropropylene (PVDF-HFP), poly(di-n-butylmethylammonium) bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (PDADMATFSI), and a metal-organic frameworks MOF derivative (HMOF) as a filler. The dual-network structure of PVDF-HFP/PDADMATFSI combined with HMOF formed a dual selective confinement interface structure to confine out the movement of large anions TFSI-, thereby enhancing the transfer ability of Li+. Subsequently, the addition of HMOF further improves the transfer of Li+ by binding up TFSI- through its crystal structure. The results show that HMOF-DNSE possesses a high room-temperature ionic conductivity (0.7 mS cm-1), a wide electrochemical window (up to 4.5 V), and a high Li+ transfer number (tLi+) (0.56). LiFePO4/HMOF-DNSE/Li cell shows an excellent capacity of 141.5 mAh g-1 at 1C rate under room temperature, with a high retention of 80.1% after 500 cycles. The material design strategy, which is based on selective confinement interface structures of anions, offers valuable insights into enhancing the electrochemical performance of solid-state lithium batteries.

Impact of Dye Encapsulation in ZIF-8 on CO2, Water, and Wet CO2 Sorption

The fast adsorption kinetics of zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) enable a wide range of sorption applications. The most commonly used framework, ZIF-8, is relatively non-polar. Increasing the polarity of ZIF-8 through the encapsulation of different polar species shows promise for enhancing the sorption performance for pure CO2. Recently, the outlook has re-focused on gas mixtures, mostly in the context of post-combustion CO2 capture from wet flue gasses. While water is known to sometimes have a synergistic effect on CO2 sorption, we still face the potential problem of preferential water vapor adsorption. Herein, we report the preparation of three ZIF-8/organic dye (OD) composites using Congo red, Xylenol orange, and Bromothymol blue, and their impact on the sorption properties for CO2, water, and a model wet CO2 system at 50% RH. The results show that the preparation of OD composites can be a promising way to optimize adsorbents for single gasses, but further work is needed to find superior ZIF@OD for the selective sorption of CO2 from wet gas mixtures.
