Novel Photocatalyst Based on Through-Space Charge Transfer Induced Intersystem Crossing Enables Rapid and Efficient Polymerization Under Low-Power Excitation Light

Currently, most photoredox catalysis polymerization systems are limited by high excitation power, long polymerization time, or the requirement of electron donors due to the precise design of efficient photocatalysts still poses a great challenge. Herein, we propose a new approach: the creation of efficient photocatalysts having low ground state oxidation potentials and high excited state energy levels, along with through-space charge transfer (TSCT) induced intersystem crossing (ISC) properties. A cabazole-naphthalimide (NI) dyad (NI-1) characterized by long triplet excited state lifetime (τT=62 μs), satisfactory ISC efficiency (ΦΔ=54.3 %) and powerful reduction capacity [Singlet: E1/2 (PC+1/*PC)=-1.93 eV, Triplet: E1/2 (PC+1/*PC)=-0.84 eV] was obtained. An efficient and rapid polymerization (83 % conversion of 1 mM monomer in 30 s) was observed under the conditions of without electron donor, low excitation power (10 mW cm-2) and low catalyst (NI-1) loading (<50 μM). In contrast, the conversion rate was lower at 29 % when the reference catalyst (NI-4) was used for photopolymerization under the same conditions, demonstrating the advantage of the TSCT photocatalyst. Finally, the TSCT material was used as a photocatalyst in practical lithography for the first time, achieving pattern resolutions of up to 10 μm.

Catalytic C(sp3)-H Trifluoroethylation of Amino Acids and Carboxylic Acids

Integrating of the trifluoroethyl (-CH2CF3) group into the organic compounds by activating the distal C(sp3)-H bond is a challenging but crucial task in organic chemistry. This transformation imparts unique physicochemical properties to the compounds, such as enhanced lipophilicity, metabolic stability, and altered electronic characteristics. In this study, we unveil a new palladium-catalyzed method to directly introduce the trifluoroethyl group into amino acid and carboxylic acid derivatives. Remarkably, this method effectively activates the β-C(sp3)-H bond across various substrates at room temperature. Utilizing mesityl(2,2,2-trifluoroethyl)iodonium triflate as a trifluoroethyl source, our approach selectively targets the distal β-C(sp3)-H bonds of amino and carboxylic acids, ensuring high chemoselectivity and enabling the straightforward synthesis of a diverse array of important γ-trifluoromethyl amino acid and carboxylic acid derivatives. Furthermore, the practical applicability of this methodology is demonstrated through its scalability for gram-scale synthesis.

Soft Actuators and Actuation: Design, Synthesis, and Applications

Soft actuators are one of the most promising technological advancements with potential solutions to diverse fields' day-to-day challenges. Soft actuators derived from hydrogel materials possess unique features such as flexibility, responsiveness to stimuli, and intricate deformations, making them ideal for soft robotics, artificial muscles, and biomedical applications. This review provides an overview of material composition and design techniques for hydrogel actuators, exploring 3D printing, photopolymerization, cross-linking, and microfabrication methods for improved actuation. It examines applications of hydrogel actuators in biomedical, soft robotics, bioinspired systems, microfluidics, lab-on-a-chip devices, and environmental, and energy systems. Finally, it discusses challenges, opportunities, advancements, and regulatory aspects related to hydrogel actuators.

Hydroxytrifluoroethylation and Trifluoroacetylation Reactions via SET Processes

Hydroxytrifluoroethyl and trifluoroacetyl groups are of utmost importance in biologically active compounds, but methods to tether these motifs to organic architectures have been limited. Typically, the preparation of these compounds relied on the use of strong bases or multistep routes. The renaissance of radical chemistry in photocatalytic, transition metal mediated, and hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) processes have allowed the installation of these medicinally relevant fluorinated motifs. This review provides an overview of the methods available for the direct synthesis of hydroxytrifluoroethyl- and trifluoroacetyl-derived compounds governed by single-electron transfer processes.

Synthesis and Properties of Cationic Core-Shell Fluorinated Polyurethane Acrylate

Vinyl-capped cationic waterborne polyurethane (CWPU) was prepared using isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI), polycarbonate diol (PCDL), N-methyldiethanolamine (MDEA), and trimethylolpropane (TMP) as raw materials and hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) as a capping agent. Then, a crosslinked FPUA composite emulsion with polyurethane (PU) as the shell and fluorinated acrylate (PA) as the core was prepared by core-shell emulsion polymerization with CWPU as the seed emulsion, together with dodecafluoroheptyl methacrylate (DFMA), diacetone acrylamide (DAAM), and methyl methacrylate (MMA). The effects of the core-shell ratio of PA/PU on the surface properties, mechanical properties, and heat resistance of FPUA emulsions and films were investigated. The results showed that when w(PA) = 30~50%, the stability of FPUA emulsion was the highest, and the particles showed a core-shell structure with bright and dark intersections under TEM. When w(PA) = 30%, the tensile strength reached 23.35 ± 0.08 MPa. When w(PA) = 50%, the fluorine content on the surface of the coating film was 14.75% and the contact angle was as high as 98.5°, which showed good hydrophobicity; the surface flatness of the film was observed under AFM. It is found that the tensile strength of the film increases and then decreases with the increase in the core-shell ratio and the heat resistance of the FPUA film is gradually increased. The FPUA film has excellent properties such as good impact resistance, high flexibility, high adhesion, and corrosion resistance.

Liquid Crystalline Nanoparticles via Polymerization-Induced Self-Assembly: Morphology Evolution and Function Regulation

Liquid crystalline nanoparticles (LC NPs) are a kind of polymer NPs with LC mesogens, which can form special anisotropic morphologies due to the influence of LC ordering. Owing to the stimuli-responsiveness of the LC blocks, LC NPs show abundant morphology evolution behaviors in response to external regulation. LC NPs have great application potential in nano-devices, drug delivery, special fibers and other fields. Polymerization-induced self-assembly (PISA) method can synthesize LC NPs at high solid content, reducing the harsh demand for reaction solvent of the LC polymers, being a better choice for large-scale production. In this review, we introduced recent research progress of PISA-LC NPs by dividing them into several parts according to the LC mesogen, and discussed the improvement of experimental conditions and the potential application of these polymers.

High-sensitivity and ultralow-hysteresis fluorine-rich ionogel strain sensors for multi-environment contact and contactless sensing

Information transduction via soft strain sensors under harsh conditions such as marine, oily liquid, vacuum, and extreme temperatures without excess encapsulation facilitates modern scientific and military exploration. However, most reported soft strain sensors struggle to meet these requirements, especially in complex environments. Herein, a class of fluorine-rich ionogels with tunable ultimate strain, high conductivity, and multi-environment tolerance are designed. Abundant ion-dipole and dipole-dipole interactions lead to excellent miscibility between the hydrophobic ionic liquid and the fluorinated polyacrylate matrix, as well as adhesion to diverse substrates in amphibious environments. The ionogel-based sensors, even in encapsulation-free form, exhibit stable operation with a negligible hysteresis (as low as 0.119%) and high sensitivity (gauge factor of up to 6.54) under amphibious conditions. Multi-environment sensing instances in contact and even contactless forms are also demonstrated. This study opens the door for the artificial syntheses of multi-environment tolerance ionic skins with robust sensing applications in soft electronics and robotics.

Fabrication of a photo-crosslinkable fluoropolymer-passivated flexible neural probe and acute recording and stimulation performances in vivo

Herein, we fabricated fluorine-containing, polymer-based, flexible neural probes with fluorinated ethylene propylene (FEP) films as the substrates and photo-crosslinkable fluoropolymers as the passivation material. For fabrication, metal-free Au layer formation on the FEP film, the simultaneous photo-adhesion and photo-patterning technique, and the pulsed-laser scanning probe shaping technique were combined, followed by Au electrode surface modification. The resultant probes achieved a charge injection limit equal to 5.18 mC cm-2 by implementing iridium oxide-modified nanoporous Au (IrOx/NPG) structures. We performed simultaneous in vivo micro-stimulations of the Schaffer collateral fibres and recorded the evoked field excitatory postsynaptic potentials (fEPSPs) in the stratum radiatum layer of the hippocampal Cornu Ammonis 1 region using a single probe. Inducing the fEPSP at very low charge per pulse settings (3.2-3.6 nC/pulse) indicates the efficient charge injection capability of the IrOx/NPG electrode, thereby enabling safe, prolonged, and thrifty micro-stimulations. Furthermore, the single probe-induced and recorded long-term potentiation persisted for periods longer than 60 min following theta-burst stimulation. The materials used in this study are all biocompatible and chemically robust. The fabricated neural probes can be applied in chronic clinical trials in vivo.

UV LED Curable Perfluoropolyether (PFPE)-Urethane Methacrylate Transparent Coatings for Photonic Applications: Synthesis and Characterization

The contribution aims to bring forth a novel synthesis route in developing transparent UV LED-curable coatings accounting for various exposure options. A selection of perfluoropolyether (PFPE)-urethane methacrylate and acrylate resins, free-radical photo-initiator Omnirad 2100, and two distinct silane-based crosslinking agents were blended under a weight ratio of 75:20:5 (without crosslinker) and 70:15:5:10, respectively. The coatings were cured under a UV LED 4 × 3 matrix light emitting source, in a chamber under a controlled atmosphere, by means of an in-house developed conveyor belt type platform, at different conveyor belt speeds (5, 50, 150, 250, and 500 mm/s). The morphologies of fabricated coatings were characterized by FTIR revealing high conversion rates (e.g., from 98 to 100%) for increased exposure time as a result of the 5 or 50 mm/s values, on all combinations. Dynamic-mechanical and optical properties of UV LED-cured transparent coatings were also investigated. A negative shift of the glass transition temperature values with a decrease in exposure time, in all combinations, from about 60 °C to 30 °C, along with storage moduli lowering in the glassy plateau further favors higher exposure times for curing. The refractive indices of poly-mers were from 1.38 to 1.40, whereas the thermo-optic coefficients are showing minor changes around the value of 2.55∙10^-4 K^-1.

Superior, Environmentally Tolerant, Flexible, and Adhesive Poly(ionic liquid) Gel as a Multifaceted Underwater Sensor

In recent years, gel-based sensors have been widely considered and fully developed. However, it is of vital importance, yet rather challenging to achieve a multifaceted gel, which can unify the advantages of favorable conductivity, high adhesion, excellent environmental resistance, and so forth and be applied in various harsh conditions. Herein, an ideal, extremely stable, adhesive, conductive poly(ionic liquid) gel (PILG) was designed via a one-step photoinitiated radical polymerization based on 1-vinyl-3-butylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide (VBIm-NTf₂) cross-linked with ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) in methyltributylammonium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (N₁₄₄₄-NTf₂) medium. There are abundant hydrophobic butyl chains and fluorinated groups in VBIm-NTf₂ and N₁₄₄₄-NTf₂, which can impart the PILG with stable conductivity, excellent environmental tolerance, and adhesion even in water due to the ion-dipole and ion-ion interactions. The resulting PILG can be assembled as a soft and smart sensor that can be applied in specific conditions such as underwater or undersea and even in dynamic water, achieving a stable signal transmission. Meanwhile, the PILG can be utilized as a flexible electrode to convey ECG signals in air or water whether it is in the static or dynamic state. Therefore, it is envisioned that this novel PILG will serve as a hopeful electrical device for signal detection and healthy management in specific environments.

Thermally resettable laser transmission induced transparency in polymer waveguides at 635 nm

Laser transmission induced transparency (LTIT) has been observed in a polymer waveguide using commercial perfluorinated acrylate-based materials when a continuous-wave laser at 635 nm is injected. The transmitted optical power increases continuously and follows a non-linear curve with respect to the laser injection time. Loss reduction over 13 dB is observed within 60 min at a moderate laser power of 5 mW. While higher injection power leads to a quicker change of the waveguide transparency, this loss reduction tends to saturate at a level irrelevant to the injection power. Further experiments demonstrate that a laser injection at 635 nm can also slightly improve the transparency at near-infrared wavelengths from 1500 nm to 1600 nm which is also the target wavelength range for this material. The state after a certain laser injection dose of 635 nm proves to be stable and the transmission characteristics of the polymer waveguide can be maintained and will continue after being stored at room temperature over a long period of time. By baking the waveguide at 200 °C for 20 min, the transparency property can be reset and the waveguide will return to the original high-loss state of 635 nm. These unique properties can be attributed to the photo-induced generation and thermally induced recombination of free radicals in the organic material. Our discovery may trigger interesting applications of polymer waveguides in the development of optical memory, clock, and encryption devices, beyond their target applications in optical communication.

Electrochemical Ring-Opening Dicarboxylation of Strained Carbon-Carbon Single Bonds with CO2: Facile Synthesis of Diacids and Derivatization into Polyesters

Diacids are important monomers in the polymer industry to construct valuable materials. Dicarboxylation of unsaturated bonds, such as alkenes and alkynes, with CO₂ has been demonstrated as a promising synthetic method. However, dicarboxylation of C─C single bonds with CO₂ has rarely been investigated. Herein we report a novel electrochemical ring-opening dicarboxylation of C─C single bonds in strained rings with CO₂. Structurally diverse glutaric acid and adipic acid derivatives were synthesized from substituted cyclopropanes and cyclobutanes in moderate to high yields. In contrast to oxidative ring openings, this is also the first realization of an electroreductive ring-opening reaction of strained rings, including commercialized ones. Control experiments suggested that radical anions and carbanions might be the key intermediates in this reaction. Moreover, this process features high step and atom economy, mild reaction conditions (1 atm, room temperature), good chemoselectivity and functional group tolerance, low electrolyte concentration, and easy derivatization of the products. Furthermore, we conducted polymerization of the corresponding diesters with diols to obtain a potential UV-shielding material with a self-healing function and a fluorine-containing polyester, whose performance tests showed promising applications.

C1 Polymerization of Fluorinated Aryl Diazomethanes

A library of fluorinated aryl diazomethanes were polymerized using BF₃·OEt₂ as a catalyst. The polymerization of 2,3,4,5,6-pentafluorophenyl diazomethane was found to be controlled, permitted chain extensions, and facilitated access to a series of block copolymers. Moreover, the polymer chains grew in one carbon increments (so-called "C1 polymerizations") and, as such, afforded highly substituted polymers that featured aryl units pendant to every carbon atom of the backbone. The polymers were characterized using size exclusion chromatography, various spectroscopic techniques, and a series of static and dynamic contact angle measurements. Compared to less-substituted analogues that were prepared using typical C2 polymerization methodologies, the C1 fluorinated polymers were found to be more hydrophobic while maintaining a sufficient solubility to be processed into robust films.

Visible light-driven iodine transfer polymerization provides efficient and unique access to novel poly(vinylcyclopropanes) with enhanced material properties.

Nucleophilic strategies to construct –CF2– linkages using borazine-CF2Ar reagents

Using nucleophilic, boron-based –CF2Ar reagents, we demonstrate three methods to form C–CF bonds: (1) nucleophilic aromatic substitution, (2) palladium catalyzed cross-coupling, and (3) nucleophilic substitution.

Polymers with multiple functions: α,ω-macromolecular photoinitiators/chain transfer agents used in aqueous photoinitiated polymerization-induced self-assembly

A series of α,ω-functionalized polymers with a photoinitiator end group and a RAFT end group were synthesized and employed as macromolecular photoinitiators/chain transfer agents in aqueous photoinitiated polymerization-induced self-assembly.

Antibiocorrosive Hybrid Materials with High Durability

We have developed novel antibiocorrosive multifunctional hybrid materials based on functionalizedperfluoroalkylmethacrylate copolymerswith epoxy groups in main chainsand selected biologically active compounds.The hybrids are transparent, showgood adhesion to various surfaces (plastic, wood),high viscoelastic recovery in scratch testing,low wear rates and glass transitions above 323 K. No phase separation is seen in scanning electron micrography. Enhanced mechanical strength and good abrasion resistance are advantages for uses of our protective and antibiocorrosive coatings in various applications including protection of cultural heritage.

A Transparent, Highly Stretchable, Solvent-Resistant, Recyclable Multifunctional Ionogel with Underwater Self-Healing and Adhesion for Reliable Strain Sensors

Ionogels have gained increasing attentions as a flexible conductive material. However, it remains a big challenge to integrate multiple functions into one gel that can be widely applied in various complex scenes. Herein, a kind of multifunctional ionogels with a combination of desirable properties, including transparency, high stretchability, solvent and temperature resistance, recyclability, high conductivity, underwater self-healing ability, and underwater adhesiveness is reported. The ionogels are prepared via one-step photoinitiated polymerization of 2,2,2-trifluoroethyl acrylate and acrylamide in a hydrophobic ionic liquid. The abundant noncovalent interactions including hydrogen bonding and ion-dipole interactions endow the ionogels with excellent mechanical strength, resilience, and rapid self-healing capability at room temperature, while the fluorine-rich polymeric matrix brings in high tolerance against water and various organic solvents, as well as tough underwater adhesion on different substrates. Wearable strain sensors based on the ionogels can sensitively detect and differentiate large body motions, such as bending of limbs, walking and jumping, as well as subtle muscle movements, such as pronunciation and pulse. It is believed that the designed ionogels will show great promises in wearable devices and ionotronics.

Revisiting the Balz-Schiemann Reaction of Aryldiazonium Tetrafluoroborate in Different Solvents under Catalyst- and Additive-Free Conditions

The thermal and photochemical Balz-Schiemann reaction in commonly used solvents was revisited under catalyst- and additive-free conditions. The study showed that using low- or non-polar solvents could improve the pyrolysis and photolysis of aryldiazonium tetrafluoroborates, enabling effective fluorination at a low temperature or under visible-light irradiation. PhCl and hexane were exemplified as cheap and reliable solvents for both reactions, providing good to excellent yields of aryl fluorides from the corresponding diazonium tetrafluoroborates. The combination of slight heating with visible-light irradiation was beneficial for the transformation of stable aryldiazonium tetrafluoroborates. Nevertheless, the electronic and steric nature of aryldiazonium tetrafluoroborates still had a pivotal effect on both fluorinations even in these solvents.

A highly transparent ionogel with strength enhancement ability for robust bonding in an aquatic environment

An underwater adhesive with strong, fast and stable adhesion ability has become an urgent requirement for various industrial applications. Herein, a highly transparent ionogel based on a fluorine-rich poly(ionic liquid) and the corresponding ionic liquid monomer has been developed and used as an underwater adhesive. Strong and stable underwater adhesion can be realized by taking advantage of the excellent interface adaptability and high mechanical strength of this ionogel. The underwater adhesion strength could reach as high as 5.18 ± 0.27 MPa. In addition, it can also realize robust bonding over a wide pH range (0-14). A waterproof transparent tape based on the ionogel has also been developed and it can carry out repair work in wet and aquatic environments.

Underwater Communication and Optical Camouflage Ionogels

Marine animals, such as leptocephalus and jellyfish, can sense external stimuli and achieve optical camouflage in the aquatic environment. Fabricating an intelligent soft sensor that can mimic the capabilities of transparent marine animals and function underwater can enable transformative applications in various novel fields. However, previously reported soft sensors struggle to meet the requirements of adhesion, self-healing ability, optical transparency, and stable conductivity in the aquatic environment. Herein, high-performance ionogels by virtue of ion-dipole and ion-ion interactions between fluorine-rich poly(ionic liquid) and ionic liquid are designed. The hydrophobic dynamic viscoelastic networks provide excellent properties for ionogels, including optical transparency, adjustable mechanical properties, underwater self-healing ability, underwater adhesiveness, conductivity, and 3D printability. A mechanically compliant and visually invisible underwater soft sensor based on ionogel is developed. This sensor can achieve optical camouflage, human-body-motion detection, and barrier-free communication in the aquatic environment. A novel contactless sensing mechanism based on changing the electron transfer pathway is proposed. Several interesting functions, such as detection of water environment changes, recognition of objects, delivery of information, and even identification of human standing posture can be realized. Importantly, the ionogel sensor can avoid fatigue and physical damage in the sensing process.

Constructing helical nanowires via polymerization-induced self-assembly

While reliable strategies for constructing block copolymer (BCP) nanowires have been developed, helical nanowires are rarely reported in polymerization-induced self-assembly (PISA). Herein, in this work, a new strategy for constructing helical nanowires was developed via PISA mediated by a fluorinated stabilizer block. Ultralong nanowires with helical structure can be readily produced in a wide range of block compositions. In addition, the generality of this strategy was well testified by expanding monomer types. The achiral BCP nano-objects underwent a morphology transition from spheres to helical nanowires during aging. We believe this work will provide a general strategy for producing helical nanowires through PISA of achiral BCPs.

Type I Photoinitiator-Functionalized Block Copolymer Nanoparticles Prepared by RAFT-Mediated Polymerization-Induced Self-Assembly

Type I photoinitiators have been widely used in UV-vis curing technology for the fabrication of functional polymer materials such as coatings, inks, and adhesives. To overcome the drawbacks of using small molecular type I photoinitiators and expand the potential applications of UV-vis curing technology, attaching type I photoinitiators onto the surface of polymer colloids is an attractive strategy. Here we report a robust strategy for the efficient preparation of type I photoinitiator-functionalized block copolymer nanoparticles with various morphologies via aqueous reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT)-mediated polymerization-induced self-assembly (PISA), in which the photoinitiating ability of the type I photoinitiator end group provides a landscape for further functionalization. These block copolymer nanoparticles could also be used as heterogeneous photoinitiators to generate hydrogels with nanoparticles embedded inside. Significantly, the properties and functionalities of these hydrogels could be further controlled by using different block copolymer nanoparticles. This study provides a robust strategy toward the preparation of type I photoinitiator-functionalized block copolymer nanoparticles with the capacity to be modified with varying functionalities.

Influence of Fluorinated Components on Perovskite Solar Cells Performance and Stability

Several valuable scientific investigations have been conducted these last few years in materials design and device engineering for perovskite solar cells (PSCs) to make them competitive compared to traditional silicon-based photovoltaic technologies. Consequently, high power conversion efficiency beyond 25% is nowadays reported. However, their long-term stability remains a significant challenge to overcome. Herein, the influence of fluorinated compounds on each layer of PSCs devices and their impact on the resulted device performances and stability is spotlighted. The fluorinated compounds exhibit attractive properties due to their very high electronegativity attributed to the fluorine atom, and their strong hydrophobicity. Thus, the introduction of these compounds is found to be a successful strategy to positively suppress the surface trap states, enhancing charge collection and reducing interfacial charge recombination. Besides, a better film quality and better energy level alignment is obtained, resulting in the improvement of device photovoltaic parameters such as the open-circuit voltage (V_oc ), short-circuit current (J_sc ), and fill factor (FF), and then, the device's overall power conversion efficiency (PCE). Their long-term stability is also found to further be improved.

Directional effect on the fusion of ellipsoidal morphologies into nanorods and nanotubes

Particle fusion is well-recognized as an important spontaneous process to produce higher-order nanostructures during morphology transition in polymerization-induced self-assembly (PISA). However, to our knowledge, the directional contact, adhesion, and fusion of adjacent nanoparticles have been rarely elucidated in PISA. Herein, a directional fusion of ellipsoidal morphologies was demonstrated during PISA of semi-fluorinated liquid-crystalline (SFLC) block copolymers. The ellipsoidal nanostructures, including micelles and vesicles, preferred to undergo a directional fusion in a head-to-head model, leading to the formation of nanorods and nanotubes, respectively. We believe the directional fusion will offer insightful guidance in PISA to the preparation of complicated functional nanostructures.
