Tris-Functionalized Polyoxotungstovanadate-Mediated Antitumor Efficacy Involves Multiple Cell Death Pathways

Polyoxometalates (POMs) are promising inorganic drug candidates for cancer chemotherapy. They are becoming attractive because of their easy accessibility and low cost. Herein, we report the synthesis and antitumor activity studies of four Lindqvist-type POMs with mixed-addenda atoms Na2[V4W2O16{(OCH2)3CR}] (R=-CH2OH, -CH3, -CH2CH3) and (Bu4N)2[V3W3{(OCH2)3CH2OOCCH2CH3}]. Compared with the current clinical applied antitumor drug 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) or Gemcitabine, analysis of MTT/CCK-8 assay, colony formation and wound healing assay revealed that the {V4W2} POMs had acceptable cytotoxicity in normal cells (293T) and significant inhibitory effects on cell proliferation and migration in three human tumor cell lines: human lung carcinoma cells (A549), human cervical carcinoma cells (HeLa), and human breast cancer cells (MCF-7). Interestingly, among the POMs analyzed, the therapeutic index (TI) of the {V4W2} POM with R= -CH2OH was relatively the most satisfactory. Thus, it was subsequently used for further studies. Flow cytometry analysis showed it prompted cellular apoptosis rate. qRT-PCR and Western blotting analysis indicated that multiple cell death pathways were activated including apoptosis, autophagy, necroptosis and pyroptosis during the POM-mediated antitumor process. In conclusion, our study shows that the polyoxotungstovanadate has great potential to be developed into a broad-spectrum antitumor chemotherapeutic drug.

Recent Progress and Future Prospects of Anions O-site Doped Perovskite Oxides in Electrocatalysis for Various Electrochemical Systems

With the rapid development of novel energy conversion and storage technologies, there is a growing demand for enhanced performance in a wide range of electrocatalysts. Perovskite oxides (ABO3 ) have caused widespread concerns due to their excellent electrocatalytic properties, low cost, stable and reliable performance. In recent years, the research on anion O-site doping of perovskite oxides has been a cynosure, which is considered as a promising route for enhancing performance. However, a systematic review summarizing the research progress of anion-doped perovskite oxides is still lacking. Therefore, this review mainly introduces the elements and strategies of various common anions doped at O-site of perovskite oxides, analyzes their influence on the physical and chemical properties of perovskites, and separately concludes their applications in electrocatalysis. This review will provide ideas and prospects for the development of subsequent anion doping strategies for high performance perovskite oxides.

Nephroprotective Effects of Cardamonin on Renal Ischemia Reperfusion Injury/UUO-Induced Renal Fibrosis

Acute kidney injury and chronic renal fibrosis are intractable pathological processes to resolve, yet limited strategies are able to effectively address them. Cardamonin (CAD) is a flavonoid with talented antioxidant, anti-inflammatory capacity, and satisfactory biosafety. In our study, animal and cellular models of renal ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) and unilateral ureteral obstruction (UUO) were successfully constructed to confirm whether CAD confers protective effects and underlying mechanisms. Animal experiments demonstrated that CAD application (100 mg/kg) distinctly ameliorated tissue damage and improved renal function. Meanwhile, the continuous oral administration of CAD after UUO surgery efficiently inhibited renal fibrosis as confirmed by hematoxylin-eosin (H&E), Sirius red, and Masson staining as well as the downregulated mRNA and protein expression of collagen I, α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA), collagen III, and fibronectin. Interestingly, in transforming growth factor β1 (TGF-β1)-stimulated and hypoxia/reoxygenation (H/R)-exposed human kidney-2 (HK-2) cells, protective effects of CAD were again authenticated. Meanwhile, we performed bioinformatics analysis and constructed the "ingredient-target-pathway-disease" network to conclude that the potential mechanisms of CAD protection may be through the regulation of oxidative stress, inflammation, apoptosis, and mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) pathway. Furthermore, experimental data validated that CAD evidently decreased the reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and malondialdehyde (MDA) content while depressing the mRNA and protein expression of inflammatory markers (tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin-6 (IL-6), and Il-1β) and inhibiting apoptosis as evidenced by decreased levels of P53, BAX, cleaved caspase-3, and apoptotic rate in renal I/R and UUO models. In addition, the impact of CAD on restraining oxidative stress and inflammation was attributed to its ability to elevate antioxidant enzyme activities including catalase, superoxide dismutase 1 (SOD1), and superoxide dismutase 2 (SOD2) and to inhibit the inflammation-associated MARK/nuclear factor-κB (MAPK/NF-κB) signaling pathway. In conclusion, cardamonin restored the antioxidative capacity to block oxidative stress and suppressed the MAPK/NF-κB signaling pathway to alleviate inflammatory response, thus mitigating I/R-generated acute kidney injury/UUO-induced renal fibrosis in vivo and in vitro, which indicated the potential therapeutic advantage of cardamonin in attenuating acute and chronic kidney injuries.

Change of the Petrographic Characteristics of Semi-Coke in the Iron Ore Sintering Process

This study focuses on the petrographic analysis method to evaluate semi-coke and its combustion behavior in the sintering process, which has been seldom conducted before. Semi-cokes are different in morphological features, porosity, pore structure, and wall thickness, because of differences in the vitrinite and inertinite of the raw coal. Semi-coke displayed isotropy, and even after the drop tube furnace (DTF) and sintering process, it still retained its optical properties. Eight kinds of sintered ash were observed using reflected light microscopy. Petrographic analyzes for the combustion properties of semi-coke were based on its optical structure, morphological development, and unburned char. The results indicated that microscopic morphology was an important characteristic when trying to understand the behavior and burnout of semi-coke. These characteristics can be used to trace the origin of the unburned char in fly ash. The unburned semi-coke mostly existed in the form of inertoid, mixed dense and mixed porous. Meanwhile, it was found that most of the unburned chars were melted into sinter, resulting in inefficient fuel combustion.

Effect of Vacuum-Sealed Annealing and Ice-Water Quenching on the Structure and Photocatalytic Acetone Oxidations of Nano-TiO2 Materials

In the current research, P25 TiO₂ materials sealed in quartz vacuum tubes were subject to annealing and ice-water post-quenching, with the effects on TiO₂ structures, morphology, and photocatalytic activity being studied. It is shown that the vacuum-sealed annealing can lead to a decrease in the crystallinity and temperature of anatase-to-rutile phase transition. A disorder layer is formed over TiO₂ nanoparticles, and the TiO₂ lattices are distorted between the disorder layer and crystalline core. The ice-water post-quenching almost has no effect on the crystalline structure and morphology of TiO₂. It can be seen that the vacuum-sealed annealing can generate more defects, and the electrons are mainly localized at lattice Ti sites, as well as the percentage of bulk oxygen defects is also increased. Although further ice-water post-quenching can introduce more defects in TiO₂, it does not affect the electron localization and defect distribution. The vacuum-sealed annealing process can increase the photocatalytic acetone oxidations of the anatase phase TiO₂ to some extent, possibly because of the defect generation and Ti³⁺ site formation; the further ice-water quenching leads to a decrease in the photocatalytic activity because more defects are introduced.

Smart Mushroom-Inspired Imprintable and Lightly Detachable (MILD) Microneedle Patterns for Effective COVID-19 Vaccination and Decentralized Information Storage

The key to controlling the spread of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and reducing mortality is highly dependent on the safe and effective use of vaccines for the general population. Current COVID-19 vaccination practices (intramuscular injection of solution-based vaccines) are limited by heavy reliance on medical professionals, poor compliance, and laborious vaccination recording procedures, resulting in a waste of health resources and low vaccination coverage, etc. In this study, we developed a smart mushroom-inspired imprintable and lightly detachable (MILD) microneedle platform for the effective and convenient delivery of multidose COVID-19 vaccines and decentralized vaccine information storage. The mushroom-like structure allows the MILD system to be easily pressed into the skin and detached from the patch base, acting as a "tattoo" to record the vaccine counts in situ without any storage equipment, offering quick accessibility and effortless readout, saving a great deal of valuable time and energy for both patients and health professionals. After loading inactivated SARS-CoV-2 virus-based vaccines, MILD system induced a high level of antibodies against the SARS-CoV-2 receptor-binding domain (RBD) in vivo without eliciting systemic toxicity and local damage. Collectively, this smart delivery platform serves as a promising carrier to improve COVID-19 vaccination efficacy through its dual capabilities of vaccine delivery and in situ data storage, thus exhibiting great potential for helping to contain the COVID-19 pandemic or a resurgence.

Adsorption of SF6 Decomposition Products by the S Vacancy Structure and Edge Structure of SnS2: A Density Functional Theory Study

Detecting the composition and concentration of SF6 decomposition products is an effective method to evaluate the state of gas-insulated switchgear. Based on density functional theory, in this work we investigated the adsorption properties of four typical SF6 decomposition products (H2S, SO2, SOF2, SO2F2) on an SnS2 S vacancy structure (SnS2-Sv) and SnS2 edge structure (SnS2-edge). By calculating the adsorption energy, charge transfer, and comparing the density of states (DOS) of each system before and after the adsorption of gas molecules, the physical and chemical interactions between SnS2 with different structures and gas molecules were investigated. The results show that SnS2-Sv has the largest adsorption energy for SO2 and has obvious chemical interactions. The S vacancy can effectively capture an O atom in SO2, causing SO2 to firmly adsorb in the S vacancy. In addition, the adsorption of the four gases on the SnS2-edge is physical adsorption, in which the 50% S edge structure has the largest adsorption energy for H2S, reaching -0.52 eV, and there is also a large charge transfer between the 50% S edge structure and H2S. Although the adsorption energy of SnS2-edge to the four gases is smaller than SnS2-Sv, it is still greater than the pristine SnS2. This paper explores the adsorption properties of SnS2-Sv and SnS2-edge for SF6 decomposition products, providing insights for the development of SnS2-based gas sensors.

Self-Assembled Hierarchical Cu x O@C18H36O2 Nanoflakes for Superior Fenton-like Catalysis over a Wide Range of pH

A novel copper-based catalyst supported by a long-chain hydrocarbon stearic acid (Cu _x O@C₁₈H₃₆O₂) was synthesized by a hydrothermal method and double replacement reactions. The as-prepared catalyst is shown as self-assembled hierarchical nanoflakes with an average size of ∼22 nm and a specific surface area of 51.4 m² g^-1. The catalyst has a good performance on adsorption as well as Fenton-like catalytic degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB). The catalyst (10 mg/L) showed an excellent adsorption efficiency toward RhB (20 mg/L) for pH ranging from 5 to 13, with the highest adsorption rate (99%) exhibited at pH 13. The Fenton-like catalytic degradation reaction of RhB (20 mg/L) by Cu _x O@C₁₈H₃₆O₂ nanoflakes was effective over a wide range of pH of 3-11, and ^•OH radicals were generated via Cu₂O/H₂O₂ interactions in acidic conditions and CuO/H₂O₂ reactions in a neutral solution. The highest efficiency catalytic degradation of RhB (20 mg/L) was 99.2% under acidic conditions (pH = 3, H₂O₂ = 0.05 M), with an excellent reusability of 96% at the 6th cycle. The results demonstrated that the as-prepared Cu _x O@C₁₈H₃₆O₂ nanoflakes are an efficient candidate for wastewater treatment, with excellent adsorption capacity and superior Fenton-like catalytic efficiency and stability for RhB.

Revisiting the Balz-Schiemann Reaction of Aryldiazonium Tetrafluoroborate in Different Solvents under Catalyst- and Additive-Free Conditions

The thermal and photochemical Balz-Schiemann reaction in commonly used solvents was revisited under catalyst- and additive-free conditions. The study showed that using low- or non-polar solvents could improve the pyrolysis and photolysis of aryldiazonium tetrafluoroborates, enabling effective fluorination at a low temperature or under visible-light irradiation. PhCl and hexane were exemplified as cheap and reliable solvents for both reactions, providing good to excellent yields of aryl fluorides from the corresponding diazonium tetrafluoroborates. The combination of slight heating with visible-light irradiation was beneficial for the transformation of stable aryldiazonium tetrafluoroborates. Nevertheless, the electronic and steric nature of aryldiazonium tetrafluoroborates still had a pivotal effect on both fluorinations even in these solvents.

First-principles Insights into Cu-Decorated GaN Monolayers for Sensing CO and HCHO in Dry-Type Transformers

This work using first-principles theory studies the sensing properties of Cu-decorated GaN (Cu-GaN) monolayers as a promising candidate for the detection of CO and HCHO in dry-type transformers. The Cu dopant prefers to be trapped on the TN site of the GaN surface with an E b of -1.13 eV. Chemisorption is identified for the two gas adsorption systems, given the large adsorption energy (E ad) of -1.35 and -1.09 eV. Caused by the chemisorption, the electronic property of the Cu-GaN monolayer is significantly deformed, narrowing its band gap of 0.548 eV to 0.00 eV, exhibiting metallic property, in two gas systems. Combined with the desirable recovery property for CO and HCHO desorption from the Cu-GaN surface, it could be proposed that the Cu-GaN monolayer is a promising gas sensor for toxic gas detection in dry-type transformers, so as to evaluate the operation status of the power system and guarantee safe working conditions for the maintenances.

Compatibility and Interaction Mechanism between EPDM Rubber and a SF6 Alternative Gas-C4F7N/CO2/O2

Among the numerous novel eco-friendly insulating gases, C₄F₇N has attracted much attention due to its excellent electrical performance. However, except for the electrical perfomance, the compatibility between the gas medium and the sealing materials is equally important for gas-insulated equipment. At present, studies about the compatibility between C₄F₇N and EPDM, a widely used sealing material in power systems, are available in some previous works, but few focused on the compatibility comparison between C₄F₇N gas mixtures and EPDM with different third monomers. In this paper, we carried out the thermal aging test on ENB-EPDM, DCPD-EPDM, and C₄F₇N gas mixture to perfect the compatibility mechanism between EPDM and C₄F₇N. It was found that both of the EPDM reacted with the gas mixture and led to the property changes in the solid samples and the decomposition of C₄F₇N. On the other hand, by coating silicone grease, the contact between gas and rubber was effectively blocked and the concentration of the decomposition product was significantly reduced. The performance comparison indicates that ENB-EPDM is more suitable for sealing the C₄F₇N gas mixture, which is due to the superior thermal stability of ENB.
