Structures of Metal-Organic Frameworks with Rod Secondary Building Units

Highly Stable MOF-Type Lead Halide Luminescent Ferroelectrics

Lead halide molecular ferroelectrics represent an important class of luminescent ferroelectrics, distinguished by their high chemical and structural tunability, excellent processability and distinctive luminescent characteristics. However, their inherent instability, prone to decomposition upon exposure to moisture and light, hinders their broader ferroelectric applications. Herein, for the first time, we present a series of isoreticular metal-organic framework (MOF)-type lead halide luminescent ferroelectrics, demonstrating exceptional robustness under ambient conditions for at least 15 months and even when subjected to aqueous boiling conditions. Unlike conventional metal-oxo secondary building units (SBUs) in MOFs adopting highly centrosymmetric structure with limited structural distortion, our lead halide-based MOFs occupy structurally deformable [Pb2X]+ (X=Cl-/Br-/I-) SBUs that facilitate a c-axis-biased displacement of Pb2+ centers and substantially contribute to thermoinducible structural transformation. Importantly, this class of MOF-type lead halide ferroelectrics undergo ferroelectric-to-paraelectric phase transitions with remarkably high Curie temperature of up to 505 K, superior to most of molecular ferroelectrics. Moreover, the covalent bonding between phosphorescent organic component and the light-harvesting inorganic component achieves efficient spin-orbit coupling and intersystem crossing, resulting in long-lived afterglow emission. The compelling combination of high stability, ferroelectricity and afterglow emission exhibited by lead halide MOFs opens up many potential opportunities in energy-conversion applications.

Biphenyl tetracarboxylic acid-based metal-organic frameworks: a case of topology-dependent thermal expansion

The large inherent flexibility and highly modular nature of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) make them ideal candidates for the study of negative thermal expansion (NTE). Among diverse organic ligands, the biphenyl unit, which can unrestrictedly rotate along its C-C single bond, can largely enhance the structural flexibility. Herein, we explored the thermal expansion behaviors of four indium biphenyl tetracarboxylates (BPTCs). Owing to the different dihedral angles of BPTC ligands and coordination mode of In3+, they show distinct topologies: InOF-1 (nti), InOF-2 (unc), InOF-12 (pts) and InOF-13 (nou). Intriguingly, it is found that the thermal expansion is highly dependent on the specific topology. The MOFs featuring mononuclear nodes show normal positive thermal expansion (PTE), and the magnitudes of coefficients follow the trend of InOF-2 < InOF-12 < InOF-13, inversely related to averaged molecular volumes. In contrast, the InOF-1, composed of a 1D chain of corner-shared InO6 octahedrons, shows pronounced NTE. Detailed high-resolution synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction and lattice dynamic analyses shed light on the fact that NTE in the InOF-1 is a synergy effect of the spring-like distortion of the inorganic 1D helical chain and twisting of the BPTC ligands. The present work shows how the topological arrangement of building blocks governs the thermal expansion behaviors.

Mechanical bonding of rigid MORFs using a tetratopic rotaxane

The preparation of highly rigid cobalt(II)- and copper(II)-organic frameworks incorporating a tetralactam [2]rotaxane as a ligand is described. The interlocked ligand is functionalized with two pairs of carboxylate groups placed at each counterpart, thus limiting its dynamics within the crystal. The solid structure of the metal-organic rotaxane frameworks showed different, unprecedented polycatenation modes of grids, depending on the employed metal, providing great rigidity to the structures. This rigidity has been evaluated by using single crystal X-ray diffraction analyses of the cobalt(II)-organic frameworks embedded in different solvents, observing that the lattices remain unchanged. Thus, this research demonstrates that rigid and robust materials with permanent porosity can be achieved using dynamic ligands.

Effects of Nanocomposite Derivatives of Ni-Fe, Ni-Co, Ni-Co-Fe Prussian Blue Analogues on the Thermal Decomposition Performance of Nitrocellulose

The incorporation of nanomaterials generated from Prussian blue (PB) derivatives has emerged as a promising strategy to significantly improve the properties of energetic materials. In this study, we comprehensively investigated the influence of nanomaterials derived from PB on the thermal decomposition characteristics of energetic materials. To achieve this goal, we prepared nanomaterials using coprecipitation and heat treatment methods with PB derivatives as catalysts. Advanced techniques such as X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analysis for specific surface area and pore size, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were employed to thoroughly characterize these nanomaterials. Differential scanning calorimetry was used to assess the thermal behavior of nitrocellulose (NC), and the relevant kinetic parameters were determined through thermal decomposition kinetics calculations and analysis. This work revealed the influence of catalysts on the NC decomposition process and provided comprehensive insights into the effect of integrating nanomaterials derived from PB derivatives on the thermal decomposition performance of NC. The results of this work demonstrated the possibility of using nanomaterials generated from PB derivatives as effective catalysts to enhance the thermal decomposition characteristics of NC, offering interesting opportunities for their application in the field of high-energy materials.

Phosphoramide-Based Metal-Organic Frameworks for Effective Gas Adsorption

Cost-effective and facile synthetic routes to organic ligands, along with porous materials that exhibit exceptional gas-storage properties, promise significant industrial applications. Here, a two-step synthesis of novel organophosphorus ligands without metal catalysts is reported. These ligands serve as versatile linkers for the construction of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) incorporating various metal ions, including zinc and copper. One of the zinc-based MOFs demonstrates remarkable gas-storage properties, with a hydrogen (H2) capacity exceeding 2.5 wt% at 77 K and 100 kPa as well as a carbon dioxide (CO2) capacity exceeding 20 wt% at 298 K and 100 kPa. Furthermore, this zinc-based MOF can be synthesized through a solvothermal process on the gram scale that yields high-quality single crystals.

Mechanochemical Synthesis and Three-Dimensional Electron Diffraction Structure Solution of a Novel Cu-Based Protocatechuate Metal-Organic Framework

Mechanochemical synthesis is a powerful approach to obtain new materials, limiting costs, and times. However, defected and submicrometrical-sized crystal products make critical their characterization through classical single-crystal X-ray diffraction. A valid alternative is represented by three-dimensional (3D) electron diffraction, in which a transmission electron microscope is used, like a diffractometer. This work matches a green water-based mechanochemical synthesis and 3D electron diffraction to obtain and characterize a Cu-based protocatechuate metal-organic framework (PC-MOF). Its structure has been fully refined through dynamical diffraction theory, and free water molecules could be detected in the channels of the framework. Thermal characterization, focused on the dehydration profile determination, leads to the formation of a novel high-temperature 2D coordination polymer, fully solved with 3D electron diffraction data. At last, the strong activity of the PC-MOF against cationic dyes like methylene blue has been reported.

A Three-Dimensionally Extended Metal-Organic Ladder Compound Exhibiting Proton Conduction

Ladder systems situated in the dimensional crossover region have attracted much attention because their electronic states and physical properties depend strongly on the electronic correlations among the constituent legs. Generally, two-/three-legged transition metal-oxide ladder compounds are studied as representative ladder systems, but two-/three-dimensional (2D/3D) extensions based on such ladder systems with a few numbers of legs are difficult because of the extreme synthesis conditions. Here, for the first time, we report the successful creation of a 3D extended two-legged ladder compound, [Pt(en)(dpye)I]2(NO3)4 ⋅ 2H2O (en=ethylenediamine; dpye=1,2-Di(4-pyridyl)ethane), which is obtained by simple oxidative polymerization of a small Pt macrocyclic complex using elemental I2. The unique 3D extended lattice consists of 1D mixed-valence halogen-bridged metal chains (⋅⋅⋅Pt-I-Pt-I⋅⋅⋅) and helically arranged macrocyclic units as the constituent legs and rungs, as confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Diffuse X-ray scattering analyses and optical measurements revealed that the out-of-phase mixed-valence Pt2+/Pt4+ arrangement arises from the weak interchain correlation among adjacent legs. In addition, this compound shows an increase in proton conductivity by a factor of up to 1000, depending on humidity.

Regulating luminescence thermal enhancement in negative thermal expansion metal-organic frameworks

Overcoming thermal quenching is generally essential for the practical application of luminescent materials. It has been recently found that frameworks with negative thermal expansion (NTE) could be a promising candidate to engineer unconventional luminescence thermal enhancement. However, the mechanism through which luminescence thermal enhancement can be well tuned remains an open issue. In this work, enabled by altering ligands in a series of UiO-66 derived Eu-based metal-organic frameworks, it was revealed that the changes in the thermal expansion are closely related to luminescence thermal enhancement. The NTE of the aromatic ring part favors luminescence thermal enhancement, while contraction of the carboxylic acid part plays the opposite role. Modulation of functional groups in ligands can change the thermal vibration of aromatic rings and then achieve luminescence thermal enhancement in a wide temperature window. Our findings pave the way to manipulate the NTE and luminescence thermal enhancement based on ligand engineering.

A redox active rod coordination polymer from tetrakis(4-carboxylic acid biphenyl)tetrathiafulvalene

An enlarged version of the ubiquitous tetrathiafulvalene-tetrabenzoic acid is described, with 4,4'-biphenyl moieties as spacers between the coordination moieties and the electroactive core. The obtained rectangular ligand has a 14 × 22 Å2 size and is combined with Zn(II) under solvothermal conditions to yield a coordination polymer endowed with large cavities of ca. 15 × 11 Å2/10 × 10 Å2. The topology of the material is discussed in detail using the Points of Extension and Metals (PE&M) or the Straight-rod (STR) representation, and the sqc1121 or tfo topological type of the structure is observed, respectively. Its stability towards solvent removal and electrical properties are discussed. The material does not present any permanent porosity upon desolvation according to nitrogen sorption measurements at 77 K. Nevertheless, a significant increase in conductivity is observed on compressed pellets of the material upon post-synthetic oxidation with iodine. Raman spectroscopy combined with density functional theory (DFT) calculations has been used to characterize the oxidation state of tetrakis(4-carboxylic acid biphenyl)tetrathiafulvalene for coordination polymers.

Highly Emissive and Robust Cd-Based MOF with an Unprecedented Topology for Tetracycline Sensing

Herein, an unprecedented cadmium-based metal-organic framework (JNU-106) fabricated by utilizing pyrazole-functionalized tetraphenylethylene ligands (Py-TPE) and rod-shaped secondary building units is reported, possessing a new (3,3,3,6,6,8)-connected topological network. Thanks to the ingeniously designed intramolecular charge transfer behavior, which originates from the congruent coplanarity between Py and TPE, JNU-106 exhibits intense green luminescence with a quantum yield increased by 1.5 times. The phenomenon of remarkable fluorescence quenching of JNU-106 reveals that it possesses extremely high anti-interference performance, superior sensitivity, and dedicated selectivity toward tetracycline antibiotics (TCAs) in aqueous solutions, which are comparable to those of the state-of-the-art porous sensing compounds. Taking the theoretical calculations and experimental results into account, the luminescence quenching is mainly attributed to the internal filtration effect and the static quenching effect. Considering the portable and rapid performance of JNU-106-based testing strips for sensing TCAs, the fabricated JNU-106 provides an alternative for ecological monitoring and environmental governance.

Alkoxy-Functionalized Hydroxamate/Zinc Metal-Organic Frameworks and the Effects of Substituents and Acid Addition on Their Structures

Single crystals of alkoxy-functionalized hydroxamate/zinc metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) were obtained by fixating the hydroxamate moiety via intramolecular hydrogen bonding. The resulting MOF structures depend on the steric demand of the alkoxy groups, whereby the incorporation of bulky isopropyl groups affords porous hydroxamate/zinc MOFs. The topological structures of the isopropyl-substituted MOFs could be controlled by adding acid.

Multistate structures in a hydrogen-bonded polycatenation non-covalent organic framework with diverse resistive switching behaviors

The inherent structural flexibility and reversibility of non-covalent organic frameworks have enabled them to exhibit switchable multistate structures under external stimuli, providing great potential in the field of resistive switching (RS), but not well explored yet. Herein, we report the 0D+1D hydrogen-bonded polycatenation non-covalent organic framework (HOF-FJU-52), exhibiting diverse and reversible RS behaviors with the high performance. Triggered by the external stimulus of electrical field E at room temperature, HOF-FJU-52 has excellent resistive random-access memory (RRAM) behaviors, comparable to the state-of-the-art materials. When cooling down below 200 K, it was transferred to write-once-read-many-times memory (WORM) behaviors. The two memory behaviors exhibit reversibility on a single crystal device through the temperature changes. The RS mechanism of this non-covalent organic framework has been deciphered at the atomic level by the detailed single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses, demonstrating that the structural dual-flexibility both in the asymmetric hydrogen bonded dimers within the 0D loops and in the infinite π-π stacking column between the loops and chains contribute to reversible structure transformations between multi-states and thus to its dual RS behaviors.

Revolutionizing the structural design and determination of covalent-organic frameworks: principles, methods, and techniques

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) represent an important class of crystalline porous materials with designable structures and functions. The interconnected organic monomers, featuring pre-designed symmetries and connectivities, dictate the structures of COFs, endowing them with high thermal and chemical stability, large surface area, and tunable micropores. Furthermore, by utilizing pre-functionalization or post-synthetic functionalization strategies, COFs can acquire multifunctionalities, leading to their versatile applications in gas separation/storage, catalysis, and optoelectronic devices. Our review provides a comprehensive account of the latest advancements in the principles, methods, and techniques for structural design and determination of COFs. These cutting-edge approaches enable the rational design and precise elucidation of COF structures, addressing fundamental physicochemical challenges associated with host-guest interactions, topological transformations, network interpenetration, and defect-mediated catalysis.

Shaping the Water-Harvesting Behavior of Metal-Organic Frameworks Aided by Fine-Tuned GPT Models

We construct a data set of metal-organic framework (MOF) linkers and employ a fine-tuned GPT assistant to propose MOF linker designs by mutating and modifying the existing linker structures. This strategy allows the GPT model to learn the intricate language of chemistry in molecular representations, thereby achieving an enhanced accuracy in generating linker structures compared with its base models. Aiming to highlight the significance of linker design strategies in advancing the discovery of water-harvesting MOFs, we conducted a systematic MOF variant expansion upon state-of-the-art MOF-303 utilizing a multidimensional approach that integrates linker extension with multivariate tuning strategies. We synthesized a series of isoreticular aluminum MOFs, termed Long-Arm MOFs (LAMOF-1 to LAMOF-10), featuring linkers that bear various combinations of heteroatoms in their five-membered ring moiety, replacing pyrazole with either thiophene, furan, or thiazole rings or a combination of two. Beyond their consistent and robust architecture, as demonstrated by permanent porosity and thermal stability, the LAMOF series offers a generalizable synthesis strategy. Importantly, these 10 LAMOFs establish new benchmarks for water uptake (up to 0.64 g g-1) and operational humidity ranges (between 13 and 53%), thereby expanding the diversity of water-harvesting MOFs.

Correlation in Structural Architecture toward Fabrication of Schottky Device with a Series of Pyrazine Appended Coordination Polymers

Energy is the center of importance for the survivability of civilization. Use of fossil fuel is going to be suspended, and renewable energy is technologically costlier. In the quest for new energy sources and to minimize fuel expenditure, the design of energy efficient devices is one of the solutions. Toward this objective, highly delocalized π-acidic N-hetreocycle pyrazine bridged Cd(II)-based coordination polymers (CPs), [Cd(tppz)(adc)(MeOH)] (1), [Cd(tppz)(trep)] (2), and [Cd(tppz)(2,6-ndc)] (3; tppz = 2,3,5,6-tetrakis(2-pyridyl)pyrazine) are synthesized in combination with π-accessible dicarboxylato linkers (acetylene dicarboxylic acid (H2adc), terephthalic acid (H2trep), and 2,6-naphthalene dicarboxylic acid (2,6 H2ndc)). The structures of the compounds, 1-3, have been confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction measurements. Analysis of electrical property demonstrates that light irradiation enhances the conductivity and follows the order 3 > 2 > 1; compound 3 possesses the highest conductivity (1.93 × 10-3 (light), 1.12 × 10-4 S m-1 dark)), than 2 (1.80 × 10-4 (light), 1.10 × 10-4 S m-1 (dark)) and 1 (5.06 × 10-5 (light), 4.72 × 10-5 S m-1 (dark)). This light-induced electrical conductivity can pave the way toward fabrication of an active electronic device by using the discussed materials.

Rational Design and Reticulation of Infinite qbe Rod Secondary Building Units into Metal-Organic Frameworks through a Global Desymmetrization Approach for Inverse C3 H8 /C3 H6 Separation

The development of reticular chemistry has enabled the construction of a large array of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with diverse net topologies and functions. However, dominating this class of materials are those built from discrete/finite secondary building units (SBUs), yet the designed synthesis of frameworks involving infinite rod-shaped SBUs remain underdeveloped. Here, by virtue of a global linker desymmetrization approach, we successfully targeted a novel Cu-MOF (Cu-ASY) incorporating infinite Cu-carboxylate rod SBUs with its structure determined by micro electron diffraction (MicroED) crystallography. Interestingly, the rod SBU can be simplified as a unique cylindric sphere packing qbe tubule made of [43 .62 ] tiles, which further connect the tritopic linkers to give a newly discovered 3,5-connected gfc net. Cu-ASY is a permanent ultramicroporous material featuring 1D channels with highly inert surfaces and shows a preferential adsorption of propane (C3 H8 ) over propene (C3 H6 ). The efficiency of C3 H8 selective Cu-ASY is validated by multicycle breakthrough experiments, giving C3 H6 productivity of 2.2 L/kg. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that C3 H8 molecules form multiple C-H⋅⋅⋅π and atypical C-H⋅⋅⋅ H-C van der Waals interactions with the inner nonpolar surfaces. This work therefore highlights the linker desymmetrization as an encouraging and intriguing strategy for achieving unique MOF structures and properties.

Improving curcumin bactericidal potential against multi-drug resistant bacteria via its loading in polydopamine coated zinc-based metal-organic frameworks

Multi-drug resistant (MDR) bactearial strains have posed serious health issues, thus leading to a significant increase in mortality, morbidity, and the expensive treatment of infections. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), comprising metal ions and a variety of organic ligands, have been employed as an effective drug deliveryy vehicle due to their low toxicity, biodegradability, higher structural integrity and diverse surface functionalities. Polydopamine (PDA) is a versatile biocompatible polymer with several interesting properties, including the ability to adhere to biological surfaces. As a result, modifying drug delivery vehicles with PDA has the potential to improve their antimicrobial properties. This work describes the preparation of PDA-coated Zn-MOFs for improving curcumin's antibacterial properties against S. aureus and E. coli. Powder X-ray diffraction (P-XRD), FT-IR, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and DLS were utilized to characterize PDA-coated Zn-MOFs. The curcumin loading and in vitro release of the prepared MOFs were also examined. Finally, the MOFs were tested for bactericidal ability against E. coli and S. aureus using an anti-bacterial assay and surface morphological analysis. Smaller size MOFs were capable of loading and releasing curcumin. The findings showed that as curcumin was encapsulated into PDA-coated MOFs, its bactericidal potential was significantly enhanced, and the findings were further supported by SEM which indicated the complete morphological distortion of the bacteria after treatment with PDA-Cur-Zn-MOFs. These studies clearly indicate that the PDA-Cur-Zn-MOFs developed in this study are extremely promising for long-term release of drugs to treat a wide range of microbial infections.

Expanding the horizons of porphyrin metal-organic frameworks via catecholate coordination: exploring structural diversity, material stability and redox properties

Porphyrin based Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) have generated high interest because of their unique combination of light absorption, electron transfer and guest adsorption/desorption properties. In this study, we expand the range of available MOF materials by focusing on the seldom studied porphyrin ligand H10TcatPP, functionalized with tetracatecholate coordinating groups. A systematic evaluation of its reactivity with M(iii) cations (Al, Fe, and In) led to the synthesis and isolation of three novel MOF phases. Through a comprehensive characterization approach involving single crystal and powder synchrotron X-ray diffraction (XRD) in combination with the local information gained from spectroscopic techniques, we elucidated the structural features of the solids, which are all based on different inorganic secondary building units (SBUs). All the synthesized MOFs demonstrate an accessible porosity, with one of them presenting mesopores and the highest reported surface area to date for a porphyrin catecholate MOF (>2000 m2 g-1). Eventually, the redox activity of these solids was investigated in a half-cell vs. Li with the aim of evaluating their potential as electrode positive materials for electrochemical energy storage. One of the solids displayed reversibility during cycling at a rather high potential (∼3.4 V vs. Li+/Li), confirming the interest of redox active phenolate ligands for applications involving electron transfer. Our findings expand the library of porphyrin-based MOFs and highlight the potential of phenolate ligands for advancing the field of MOFs for energy storage materials.

Electron density effect of aromatic carboxylic acids in naphthalenediimide-based coordination polymers: from thermal electron transfer and charge transfer to photoinduced electron transfer

Various naphthalenediimide (NDI) based electron donor-acceptor coordination polymers (D-A CPs) have been constructed and used to explore charge transfer (CT) and electron transfer (ET) behaviors. Up to now, significant progress has been made in the interface contact and electron donor-acceptor ability matching mechanism, while the electronic density effect of the electron donors on the CT and ET behaviors is still not known. Herein, two NDI-based D-A CPs, [Cd2(H2NDI)(IPA)2(H2O)2] (1) and [Cd2(H2NDI)(IPA-OH)2(H2O)2] (2), are constructed using an NDI-based ligand and two aromatic carboxylic acid ligands (H2NDI = 2,7-bis(3,5-dimethyl) dipyrazol-1,4,5,8-naphthalene tetracarboxydiimide, H2IPA = isophthalic acid; and H2IPA-OH = 5-hydroxyisophthalic acid). UV-vis and EPR spectroscopy and DFT calculations analyses reveal that the occurrence of themal electron transfer (TET) in 1 and 2 results from the HOMO of the IPA and IPA-OH lying higher than the LUMO of the NDI. Meanwhile, compared to 1, the UV-vis absorption spectrum of 2 exhibits a significant red shift, which suggests higher electron density of the donor and more electron transfer pathways are beneficial for the occurrence of intermolecular CT. After UV light irradiation, the comparison of the photochromic behavior of 1 and 2 confirms the negative effect of the stronger CT on photoinduced electron transfer (PET). The present study illustrates the delicate modulating effect of electron density on the CT and ET behaviors in D-A CPs.

A GPT-4 Reticular Chemist for Guiding MOF Discovery

We present a new framework integrating the AI model GPT-4 into the iterative process of reticular chemistry experimentation, leveraging a cooperative workflow of interaction between AI and a human researcher. This GPT-4 Reticular Chemist is an integrated system composed of three phases. Each of these utilizes GPT-4 in various capacities, wherein GPT-4 provides detailed instructions for chemical experimentation and the human provides feedback on the experimental outcomes, including both success and failures, for the in-context learning of AI in the next iteration. This iterative human-AI interaction enabled GPT-4 to learn from the outcomes, much like an experienced chemist, by a prompt-learning strategy. Importantly, the system is based on natural language for both development and operation, eliminating the need for coding skills, and thus, make it accessible to all chemists. Our collaboration with GPT-4 Reticular Chemist guided the discovery of an isoreticular series of MOFs, with each synthesis fine-tuned through iterative feedback and expert suggestions. This workflow presents a potential for broader applications in scientific research by harnessing the capability of large language models like GPT-4 to enhance the feasibility and efficiency of research activities.

Structure and properties of metal-organic frameworks modulated by sulfate ions

Anions play a significant role in the construction of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). Anions can affect coordination between metal ions and organic ligands, and the formation of crystal structures, thereby affecting the structure and properties of MOFs. Two novel 3D porous MOFs ({[Cd3(TIPE)2(SO4)1.6(H2O)2.4]·2.8OH·6.2H2O}n (MOF-1) and {[Cd3(TIPE)2(SO4)3(H2O)2]·10H2O}n (MOF-2)) were successfully synthesized, by introducing SO42- to design and adjust their structure and properties, in which the sulfate ions not only participated in coordination but also played a bridging role. Both MOF-1 and MOF-2 exhibited high stability and strong fluorescence properties, and their fluorescence properties also changed compared to those of previously reported 2D nonporous MOF-3 ({[Cd2(TIPE)2Cl3(ACN)]·CdCl3·3H2O}n) with an identical ligand. They could also be used in combination with MOF-3 to distinguish between Fe3+ and Cr2O72- ions, due to a change in their fluorescence properties. In this work, the structure was reshaped by introducing sulfate ions, and the role and function of the sulfate ions in the structure were studied, providing a feasible idea for the design and precise regulation of MOFs.

Smart Stimulation Response of a Pyrene-Based Lanthanide(III) MOF: Fluorescence Enhancement to HX (F and Cl) or R-COOH and Artificial Applicable Film on HCl Vapor Sensing

Toxic acids produced by industries are major hazards to the environment and human health, and luminescent pyrene-based crystalline metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) demonstrate promising performance in the detection of toxic acids. Herein, two novel isostructural 3D porous lanthanide MOFs, H3O·[Ln3(TBAPy)2(μ2-H2O)2(OH)2]·2DMA·2Diox·6.5H2O (Ln = Pr (1) and Ce (2); H4TBAPy (1,3,6,8-tetrakis(p-benzoic acid)pyrene); and DMA: N,N-dimethylacetamide) were synthesized, which showed alb topology. Based on the protonation and hydrogen bond mechanism, complex 1 could be used as a fluorescence recognition sensor for HX (X = F, Cl, Br, and I) acid solutions with different luminescence behaviors. It is worth noting that complex 1 exhibited high sensitivity in the fluorescence enhancement sensing of hydrofluoric acid, oxalic acid, and trichloroacetic acid. In particular, complex 1 had a low limit of detection (LOD) for OA (0.1 μM) and was applied to real monitoring of orange fruit samples. In addition, the PVA@1 film could selectively, sensitively, and quantitatively respond to hydrochloric acid (HCl) vapor through fluorescent quenching; due to its protonation and adsorption capacity, the LOD was 0.18 ppm. Therefore, the portable optical device, the PVA@1 film, can detect HCl gas in trace amounts, achieving the ultimate goal of real-time and rapid detection, which has potential application value for industrial production safety.

Gold(I)-Organic Frameworks as Catalysts for Carboxylation of Alkynes with CO2

Construction of gold-based metal-organic frameworks (Au-MOFs) would bring the merits of gold chemistry into MOFs. However, it still remains challenging because gold cations are easily reduced to metallic gold under solvothermal conditions. Herein, we present the first example of Au-MOFs prepared from the networking of cyclic trinuclear gold(I) complexes by formal transimination reaction in a rapid (<15 min) and scalable (up to 1 g) fashion under ambient condition. The Au-MOFs feature uniform porosity, high crystallinity, and superior chemical stability toward base (i.e., 20 M NaOH). With open Au(I) sites in the skeleton, the Au-MOFs as heterogeneous catalysts delivered good performance and substrate tolerance for the carboxylation reactions of alkynes with CO2. This work demonstrates a facile approach to reticularly synthesize Au-MOFs by combining the coordination and dynamic covalent chemistry.

Recent Advances in the Catalytic Conversion of Methane to Methanol: From the Challenges of Traditional Catalysts to the Use of Nanomaterials and Metal-Organic Frameworks

Methane and carbon dioxide are the main contributors to global warming, with the methane effect being 25 times more powerful than carbon dioxide. Although the sources of methane are diverse, it is a very volatile and explosive gas. One way to store the energy content of methane is through its conversion to methanol. Methanol is a liquid under ambient conditions, easy to transport, and, apart from its use as an energy source, it is a chemical platform that can serve as a starting material for the production of various higher-value products. Accordingly, the transformation of methane to methanol has been extensively studied in the literature, using traditional catalysts as different types of zeolites. However, in the last few years, a new generation of catalysts has emerged to carry out this transformation with higher conversion and selectivity, and more importantly, under mild temperature and pressure conditions. These new catalysts typically involve the use of a highly porous supporting material such as zeolite, or more recently, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and graphene, and metallic nanoparticles or a combination of different types of nanoparticles that are the core of the catalytic process. In this review, recent advances in the porous supports for nanoparticles used for methane oxidation to methanol under mild conditions are discussed.

Recent Advances in Multifunctional Reticular Framework Nanoparticles: A Paradigm Shift in Materials Science Road to a Structured Future

Porous organic frameworks (POFs) have become a highly sought-after research domain that offers a promising avenue for developing cutting-edge nanostructured materials, both in their pristine state and when subjected to various chemical and structural modifications. Metal-organic frameworks, covalent organic frameworks, and hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks are examples of these emerging materials that have gained significant attention due to their unique properties, such as high crystallinity, intrinsic porosity, unique structural regularity, diverse functionality, design flexibility, and outstanding stability. This review provides an overview of the state-of-the-art research on base-stable POFs, emphasizing the distinct pros and cons of reticular framework nanoparticles compared to other types of nanocluster materials. Thereafter, the review highlights the unique opportunity to produce multifunctional tailoring nanoparticles to meet specific application requirements. It is recommended that this potential for creating customized nanoparticles should be the driving force behind future synthesis efforts to tap the full potential of this multifaceted material category.

Mixed-ligand metal-organic frameworks as an effective photocatalyst for selective oxidation reaction

By incorporating tetrakis(4-carboxyphenyl)porphyrin and bis(3,5-dicarboxyphenyl)pyridine into one single metal-organic framework (MOF), a multifunctional mixed-ligand Zn-MIX with large pores was obtained. Under visible-light irradiation, Zn-MIX exhibits high photocatalytic activity for the oxidation of amines and sulfides.

Target-Driven Z-Scheme Heterojunction Formation for ppb H2S Detection from Exhaled Breath at Room Temperature

As a biomarker of periodontitis, sensitive and timely monitoring of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) in exhaled breath at room temperature (RT) is important for the early intervention of oral diseases. However, the required high operation temperature to achieve high sensitivity is still a technical challenge for directly monitoring exhaled breath. In this study, by integrating metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) into self-aligned TiO2 nanotube arrays (NTs), a chemiresistor gas sensor with outstanding sensitivity and selectivity was constructed for the detection of H2S at RT. The precise regulation of a Co(III)-based MOF CoBDC-NH2 (BDC-NH2 = 2-aminoterephthalic acid) not only induced more active surface for the preconcentration of the target gas but also caused a buildup of Z-scheme heterojunctions in the H2S atmosphere that induced an ultrahigh sensitivity at RT via 365 nm light-emitting diode irradiation. The response and recovery times decreased to ∼50 and ∼28%, respectively, when this system was exposed to UV light. The sensing chips based on the as-prepared TiO2/CoBDC-NH2 NTs exhibited the highest-ranking H2S sensing performance, i.e., a limit of detection of 1.3 ppb and excellent selectivity even to 100 times high concentration of interference gases, owing to the synergistic chemical environment provided by NH2-functionalized Co-MOFs and abundant photogenerated electrons provided by Z-scheme heterojunctions. This sensing chip was also used in a practical application for the timely monitoring of halitosis from direct exhaled breath. This study provides a reliable and sensitive design for clinically aiding the timely detection of H2S in a complex oral environment.

Supramolecular isomerism and structural flexibility in coordination networks sustained by cadmium rod building blocks

Bifunctional N-donor carboxylate linkers generally afford dia and sql topology coordination networks of general formula ML₂ that are based upon the MN₂(CO₂)₂ molecular building block (MBB). Herein, we report on a new N-donor carboxylate linker, β-(3,4-pyridinedicarboximido)propionate (PyImPr), which afforded Cd(PyImPr)₂via reaction of PyImPrH with Cd(acetate)₂·2H₂O. We observed that, depending upon whether Cd(PyImPr)₂ was prepared by layering or solvothermal methods, 2D or 3D supramolecular isomers, respectively, of Cd(PyImPr)₂ were isolated. Single crystal X-ray diffraction studies revealed that both supramolecular isomers are comprised of the same carboxylate bridged rod building block, RBB. We were interested to determine if the ethylene moiety of PyImPr could enable structural flexibility. Indeed, open-to-closed structural transformations occurred upon solvent removal for both phases, but they were found to be irreversible. A survey of the Cambridge Structural Database (CSD) was conducted to analyse the relative frequency of RBB topologies in related ML₂ coordination networks in order to provide insight from a crystal engineering perspective.

Synergy of Paired Brønsted-Lewis Acid Sites on Defects of Zr-MIL-140A for Methanol Dehydration

As a common defect-capping ligand in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), the hydroxyl group normally exhibits Brønsted acidity or basicity, but the presence of inherent hydroxyl groups in the MOF structure makes it a great challenge to identify the exact role of defect-capping hydroxyl groups in catalysis. Herein, we used hydroxyl-free MIL-140A as the platform to generate terminal hydroxyl groups on defect sites via a continuous post-synthetic treatment. The structure and acidity of MIL-140A were properly characterized. The hydroxyl-contained MIL-140A-OH exhibited 4.6-fold higher activity than the pristine MIL-140A in methanol dehydration. Spectroscopic and computational investigations demonstrated that the reaction was initiated by the respective adsorption of two methanol molecules on the terminal-OH and the adjacent Zr vacancy. The dehydration of the adsorbed methanol molecules then occurred in the Brønsted-Lewis acid site co-participated associative pathway with the lowest energy barrier.

Cu-MOFs with Rich Open Metal and F Sites for Separation of C2H2 from CO2 and CH4

Herein, we used the 4-fluoro-[1,1'-biphenyl]-3,4',5-tricarboxylic acid (H₃fbptc) ligand to design and construct a new metal-organic framework (MOF), [Cu₃(fbptc)₂(H₂O)₃]·3NMP (1), which possesses rich accessible metal sites and F functional groups in the porous walls and shows high uptake for C₂H₂ (119.3 cm³ g^-1) and significant adsorption selectivity for C₂H₂ over CH₄ (14.4) and CO₂ (3.6) at 298 K and 100 kPa. In particular, for the gas mixtures of C₂H₂-CH₄ and C₂H₂-CO₂, the MOF reveals large breakthrough time ratios (C₂H₂/CH₄ = 13, C₂H₂/CO₂ = 5.9), which are particularly prominent in dynamic breakthrough experiments, also confirming the excellent potential for the practical separation of C₂H₂ from two-component mixtures (C₂H₂-CH₄ and C₂H₂-CO₂) and even three-component mixtures (C₂H₂-CO₂-CH₄).

Innovative Metal-Organic Frameworks for Targeted Oral Cancer Therapy: A Review

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have proven to be very effective carriers for drug delivery in various biological applications. In recent years, the development of hybrid nanostructures has made significant progress, including developing an innovative MOF-loaded nanocomposite with a highly porous structure and low toxicity that can be used to fabricate core-shell nanocomposites by combining complementary materials. This review study discusses using MOF materials in cancer treatment, imaging, and antibacterial effects, focusing on oral cancer cells. For patients with oral cancer, we offer a regular program for accurately designing and producing various anticancer and antibacterial agents to achieve maximum effectiveness and the lowest side effects. Also, we want to ensure that the anticancer agent works optimally and has as few side effects as possible before it is tested in vitro and in vivo. It is also essential that new anticancer drugs for cancer treatment are tested for efficacy and safety before they go into further research.

Zeolites and metal-organic frameworks for gas separation: the possibility of translating adsorbents into membranes

Zeolites and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) represent an attractive class of crystalline porous materials that possesses regular pore structures. The inherent porosity of these materials has led to an increasing focus on gas separation applications, encompassing adsorption and membrane separation techniques. Here, a brief overview of the critical properties and fabrication approaches for zeolites and MOFs as adsorbents and membranes is given. The separation mechanisms, based on pore sizes and the chemical properties of nanochannels, are explored in depth, considering the distinct characteristics of adsorption and membrane separation. Recommendations for judicious selection and design of zeolites and MOFs for gas separation purposes are emphasized. By examining the similarities and differences between the roles of nanoporous materials as adsorbents and membranes, the feasibility of zeolites and MOFs from adsorption separation to membrane separation is discussed. With the rapid development of zeolites and MOFs towards adsorption and membrane separation, challenges and perspectives of this cutting-edge area are also addressed.

Temperature-dependent rearrangement of gas molecules in ultramicroporous materials for tunable adsorption of CO2 and C2H2

The interactions between adsorbed gas molecules within porous metal-organic frameworks are crucial to gas selectivity but remain poorly explored. Here, we report the modulation of packing geometries of CO₂ and C₂H₂ clusters within the ultramicroporous CUK-1 material as a function of temperature. In-situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction reveals a unique temperature-dependent reversal of CO₂ and C₂H₂ adsorption affinities on CUK-1, which is validated by gas sorption and dynamic breakthrough experiments, affording high-purity C₂H₂ (99.95%) from the equimolar mixture of C₂H₂/CO₂ via a one-step purification process. At low temperatures (<253 K), CUK-1 preferentially adsorbs CO₂ with both high selectivity (>10) and capacity (170 cm³ g^-1) owing to the formation of CO₂ tetramers that simultaneously maximize the guest-guest and host-guest interactions. At room temperature, conventionally selective adsorption of C₂H₂ is observed. The selectivity reversal, structural robustness, and facile regeneration of CUK-1 suggest its potential for producing high-purity C₂H₂ by temperature-swing sorption.

Near-infrared metal agents assisting precision medicine: from strategic design to bioimaging and therapeutic applications

Metal agents have made incredible strides in preclinical research and clinical applications in recent years, but their short emission/absorption wavelengths continue to be a barrier to their distribution, therapeutic action, visual tracking, and efficacy evaluation. Nowadays, the near-infrared window (NIR, 650-1700 nm) provides a more accurate imaging and treatment option. Thus, there has been ongoing research focusing on developing multifunctional NIR metal agents for imaging and therapy that have deeper tissue penetration. The design, characteristics, bioimaging, and therapy of NIR metal agents are covered in this overview of papers and reports published to date. To start with, we focus on describing the structure, design strategies, and photophysical properties of metal agents from the NIR-I (650-1000 nm) to NIR-II (1000-1700 nm) region, in order of molecular metal complexes (MMCs), metal-organic complexes (MOCs), and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). Next, the biomedical applications brought by these superior photophysical and chemical properties for more accurate imaging and therapy are discussed. Finally, we explore the challenges and prospects of each type of NIR metal agent for future biomedical research and clinical translation.

A Ni(II) Coordination Polymer as a Multifunctional Luminescent Sensor for Detection of UO22+, Cr2O72-, CrO42- and Nitrofurantoin

A new Ni coordination polymer [Ni(MIP)(BMIOPE)]_n (1) was constructed (BMIOPE = 4,4'-bis(2-methylimidazol-1-yl)diphenyl ether, and H₂MIP = 5-methylisophthalic acid), possessing two-dimensional (2D) twofold parallel interwoven net structure with a 4⁴∙6² point symbol. Complex 1 has been successfully obtained based on mixed-ligand strategy. The fluorescence titration experiments revealed that complex 1 could act as multifunctional luminescent sensor to simultaneously detect UO₂²⁺, Cr₂O₇^2- and CrO₄^2-, and NFT (nitrofurantoin). The limit of detection (LOD) values for complex 1 are 2.86 × 10^-5, 4.09 × 10^-5, 3.79 × 10^-5 and 9.32 × 10^-5 M for UO₂²⁺, Cr₂O₇^2-, CrO₄^2- and NFT. The K_sv values are 6.18 × 10³, 1.44 × 10⁴, 1.27 × 10⁴ and 1.51 × 10⁴ M^-1 for NFT, CrO₄^2-, Cr₂O₇^2- and UO₂²⁺. Finally, the mechanism of its luminescence sensing is studied in detail. These results manifest that complex 1 is a multifunctional sensor for sensitive fluorescent UO₂²⁺, Cr₂O₇^2-, CrO₄^2- and NFT detection.

Structural Compromise Between Conflicted Spatial-Arrangements of Two Linkers in Metal-Organic Frameworks

The structural control of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is essential for the development of superlative MOFs because the structural features of MOFs and their components play a critical role in determining their properties, and ultimately, their applications. The best components to endow the desired properties for MOFs are available via the appropriate choice from many existing chemicals or synthesizing new ones. However, to date, considerably less information exists regarding fine-tuning the MOF structures. Herein, a strategy for tuning MOF structures by merging two MOF structures into a single MOF, is demonstrated. Depending on the incorporated amounts and relative contributions of the two coexisting organic linkers, benzene-1,4-dicarboxylate (BDC^2- ) and naphthalene-1,4-dicarboxylate (NDC^2- ), which have conflicting spatial-arrangement preferences within an MOF structure, MOFs are rationally designed to have a Kagomé or rhombic lattice. In particular, MOFs with rhombic lattices are constructed to have specific lattice angles by compromising the optimal structural arrangements between the two mixed linkers. The relative contributions of the two linkers during MOF construction determine the final MOF structures, and the competitive influence between BDC^2- and NDC^2- is effectively regulated to produce specific MOF structures with controlled lattices.

Hydrogenation of Carbon Dioxide to Formate by Noble Metal Catalysts Supported on a Chemically Stable Lanthanum Rod-Metal-Organic Framework

The conversion of carbon dioxide to formate is of great importance for hydrogen storage as well as being a step to access an array of olefins. Herein, we have prepared a JMS-5 metal-organic framework (MOF) using a bipyridyl dicarboxylate linker, with the molecular formula [La₂(bpdc)_3/2(dmf)₂(OAc)₃]·dmf. The MOF was functionalized by cyclometalation using Pd(II), Pt(II), Ru(II), Rh(III), and Ir(III) complexes. All metal catalysts supported on JMS-5 showed activity for CO₂ hydrogenation to formate, with Rh(III)@JMS-5a and Ir(III)@JMS-5a yielding 4319 and 5473 TON, respectively. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy of the most active catalyst Ir(III)@JMS-5a revealed that the iridium binding energies shifted to lower values, consistent with formation of Ir-H active species during catalysis. The transmission electron microscopy images of the recovered catalysts of Ir(III)@JMS-5a and Rh(III)@JMS-5a did not show any nanoparticles. This suggests that the catalytic activity observed was due to Ir(III) and Rh(III). The high activity displayed by Ir(III)@JMS-5a and Rh(III)@JMS-5a compared to using the Ir(III) and Rh(III) complexes on their own is attributed to the stabilization of the Ir(III) and Rh(III) on the nitrogen and carbon atom of the MOF backbone.

Inner transition metal-modulated metal organic frameworks (IT-MOFs) and their derived nanomaterials: a strategic approach towards stupendous photocatalysis

Photocatalysis, as an amenable and effective process, can be adopted for pollution remediation and to alleviate the ongoing energy crisis. In this case, recently, metal organic frameworks (MOFs) have attracted increasing attention in the field of photocatalysis owning to their unique characteristics including large specific surface area, tuneable pore architecture, mouldable framework composition, tuneable band structure, and exceptional photon absorption tendency complimented with superior anti-recombination of excitons. Among the plethora of frameworks, inner transition metal based-MOFs (IT-MOFs) have started to garner significant traction as photocatalysts due to their distinct characteristics compared to conventional transition metal-based frameworks. Typically, IT-MOFs have the tendency to generate high nuclearity clusters and possess abundant Lewis acidic sites, together with mixed valency, which aids in easily converting redox couples, thereby making them a suitable candidate for various photocatalytic reactions. Therefore, in this contribution, we aim to summarise the excellent photocatalytic performance of IT-MOFs and their composites accompanied by a thorough discussion of their topological changes with a variation in the structure of the metal cluster, fabrication routes, morphological features, and physico-chemical properties together with a brief discussion of computational findings. Moreover, we attempt to explore the scientific understanding of the functionalities of IT-MOFs and their composites with detailed mechanistic pathways for in-depth clarity towards photocatalysis. Furthermore, we present a comprehensive analysis of IT-MOFs for various crucial photocatalytic applications such as H₂/O₂ evolution, organic pollutant degradation, organic transformation, and N₂ and CO₂ reduction. In addition, we discuss the measures employed to enhance their performance with some future directions to address the challenges with IT-MOF-based nanomaterials.

A Mixed Protonic-Electronic Conductor Base on the Host-Guest Architecture of 2D Metal-Organic Layers and Inorganic Layers

The key to designing and fabricating highly efficient mixed protonic-electronic conductors materials (MPECs) is to integrate the mixed conductive active sites into a single structure, to break through the shortcomings of traditional physical blending. Herein, based on the host-guest interaction, an MPEC is consisted of 2D metal-organic layers and hydrogen-bonded inorganic layers by the assembly methods of layered intercalation. Noticeably, the 2D intercalated materials (≈1.3 nm) exhibit the proton conductivity and electron conductivity, which are 2.02 × 10^-5 and 3.84 × 10^-4 S cm^-1 at 100 °C and 99% relative humidity, much higher than these of pure 2D metal-organic layers (>>1.0 × 10^-10 and 2.01×10^-8 S cm^-1 ), respectively. Furthermore, combining accurate structural information and theoretical calculations reveals that the inserted hydrogen-bonded inorganic layers provide the proton source and a networks of hydrogen-bonds leading to efficient proton transport, meanwhile reducing the bandgap of hybrid architecture and increasing the band electron delocalization of the metal-organic layer to greatly elevate the electron transport of intrinsic 2D metal-organic frameworks.

Supramolecular framework membrane for precise sieving of small molecules, nanoparticles and proteins

Synthetic framework materials have been cherished as appealing candidates for separation membranes in daily life and industry, while the challenges still remain in precise control of aperture distribution and separation threshold, mild processing methods, and extensive application aspects. Here, we show a two-dimensional (2D) processible supramolecular framework (SF) by integrating directional organic host-guest motifs and inorganic functional polyanionic clusters. The thickness and flexibility of the obtained 2D SFs are tuned by the solvent modulation to the interlayer interactions, and the optimized SFs with limited layers but micron-sized areas are used to fabricate the sustainable membranes. The uniform nanopores allow the membrane composed of layered SF to exhibit strict size retention for substrates with the rejection value of 3.8 nm, and the separation accuracy within 5 kDa for proteins. Furthermore, the membrane performs high charge selectivity for charged organics, nanoparticles, and proteins, due to the insertion of polyanionic clusters in the framework skeletons. This work displays the extensional separation potentials of self-assembled framework membranes comprising of small-molecules and provides a platform for the preparation of multifunctional framework materials due to the conveniently ionic exchange of the counterions of the polyanionic clusters.

A hexagon based Mn(II) rod metal-organic framework - structure, SF6 gas sorption, magnetism and electrochemistry

A manganese(II) metal-organic framework based on the hexatopic hexakis(4-carboxyphenyl)benzene, cpb^6-: [Mn₃(cpb)(dmf)₃], was solvothermally prepared showing a Langmuir area of 438 m² g^-1, rapid uptake OF sulfur hexafluoride (SF₆) as well as electrochemical and magnetic properties, while single crystal diffraction reveals an unusual rod-MOF topology.

Solvent-free mechanochemical multicomponent preparation of 4H-pyrans catalyzed by Cu2(NH2-BDC)2(DABCO) metal-organic framework

4H-pyrans have been prepared through a mechanochemical multicomponent reaction (MCR) of different aldehydes, malononitrile, and various 1,3-dicarbonyl compounds, catalyzed by an amine-functionalized metal-organic framework (MOF) Cu₂(NH₂-BDC)₂(DABCO) as a heterogeneous catalyst with good to excellent yields.

Morphology control through the synthesis of metal-organic frameworks

Designable morphology and predictable properties are the most challenging goals in material engineering. Features such as shape, size, porosity, agglomeration ratio significantly affect the final properties of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and can be regulated throughout synthesis parameters but require a deep understanding of the mechanisms of MOFs formation. Herein, we systematically summarize the effects of the individual synthesis factors, such as pH of reaction mixture, including acidic or basic character of modulators, temperature, solvents types, surfactants type and content and ionic liquids on the morphology of growing MOFs. We identified main mechanisms of MOFs' growth leading to different morphology of final particles and next systematically discuss the effect of miscellaneous parameters on MOFs morphology based on the main mechanisms related to the nucleation, growth and formation of final MOFs structure, including coordination modulation, protonation/deprotonation acting and modulation by surfactants or capping agents. The effect of microwaves and ultrasound employment during synthesis is also considered due to their affecting especially nucleation and particles growing steps during MOFs formation.

Polyaromatic Group Embedded Cd(II)-Coordination Polymers for Microwave-Assisted Solvent-Free Strecker-Type Cyanation of Acetals

In this work, two new 1D Cd(II) coordination polymers (CPs), [Cd(L1)(NMF)₂]_n (1) and [Cd(L2)(DMF)(H₂O)₂]_n·n(H₂O) (2), have been synthesized, characterized and employed as catalysts for the microwave-assisted solvent-free Strecker-type cyanation of different acetals. Solvothermal reaction between the pro-ligand, 5-{(pyren-1-ylmethyl)amino}isophthalic acid (H₂L1) or 5-{(anthracen-9-ylmethyl)amino}isophthalic acid (H₂L2), and Cd(NO₃)₂.6H₂O in the presence of NMF or DMF:THF solvent, produces the coordination polymer 1 or 2, respectively. These frameworks were characterized by single-crystal and powder X-ray diffraction analyses, ATR-FTIR, elemental and thermogravimetry analysis. Their structural analysis revealed that both CPs show one-dimensional structures, but CP 1 has a 1D double chain type structure whereas CP 2 is a simple one-dimensional network. In CP 1, the dinuclear {Cd₂(COO)₄} unit acts as a secondary building unit (SBU) and the assembly of dinuclear SBUs with deprotonated ligand (L1^2-) led to the formation of a 1D double chain framework. In contrast, no SBU was observed in CP 2. To test the catalytic effectiveness of these 1D compounds, the solvent-free Strecker-type cyanation reactions of different acetals in presence of trimethylsilyl cyanide (TMSCN) was studied with CPs 1 and 2 as heterogenous catalysts. CP 1 displays a higher activity (yield 95%) compared to CP 2 (yield 84%) after the same reaction time. This is accounted for by the strong hydrogen bonding packing network in CP 2 that hampers the accessibility of the metal centers, and the presence of the dinuclear Cd(II) SBU in CP 1 which can promote the catalytic process in comparison with the mononuclear Cd(II) center in CP 2. Moreover, the recyclability and heterogeneity of both CPs were tested, demonstrating that they can be recyclable for at least for four cycles without losing their structural integrity and catalytic activity.

Nanoscale molecular rectifiers

The use of molecules bridged between two electrodes as a stable rectifier is an important goal in molecular electronics. Until recently, however, and despite extensive experimental and theoretical work, many aspects of our fundamental understanding and practical challenges have remained unresolved and prevented the realization of such devices. Recent advances in custom-designed molecular systems with rectification ratios exceeding 10⁵ have now made these systems potentially competitive with existing silicon-based devices. Here, we provide an overview and critical analysis of recent progress in molecular rectification within single molecules, self-assembled monolayers, molecular multilayers, heterostructures, and metal-organic frameworks and coordination polymers. Examples of conceptually important and best-performing systems are discussed, alongside their rectification mechanisms. We present an outlook for the field, as well as prospects for the commercialization of molecular rectifiers.

Rational Synthesis of a Stable Rod MOF for Ultrasensitive Detection of Nitenpyram and Nitrofurazone in Natural Water Systems

Overuse of nitenpyram and nitrofurazone in agricultural products poses enormous risks to ecosystems, and effective detection and quantification of these residual pollutants are of great concern. Although several strategies have been established for detecting nitenpyram and nitrofurazone in water, searching for a new sensor material with great sensitivity, selectivity, and recyclability remains challenging. Here, we design and synthesize a stable metal-organic framework (MOF) (Zn-CPTA) by employing an organic linker based on the coordination features of benzene-1,4-dicarboxylate and picolinic acid. Zn-CPTA is a 3D framework built from Zn-O-Zn chains called rod secondary building units, which contains 1D open channels modified by uncoordinated carboxyl O atoms and exhibits impressive chemical stability in aqueous solutions within a pH range from 2 to 12. Especially, fluorescent Zn-CPTA can quickly and sensitively detect nitenpyram and nitrofurazone in aqueous solutions with a high quenching constant and low detection limit (LOD) (K_SV values for nitenpyram and nitrofurazone are 1.67 × 10⁴ and 1.02 × 10⁵ M^-1 with LOD of 0.625 and 0.126 μM, respectively), as well as outstanding selectivity and recyclability. Notably, the LOD value is the lowest among the reported MOFs used for nitrofurazone detection. Besides, experiments and density functional theory calculations are combined to explain the quenching mechanism. Finally, the practical application of Zn-CPTA was further explored in real environment samples with satisfactory recoveries.
