Rise of Conjugated Poly-ynes and Poly(Metalla-ynes): From Design Through Synthesis to Structure-Property Relationships and Applications

Characterization of Excited-State Electronic Structure in Diblock π-Conjugated Oligomers with Adjustable Linker Electronic Coupling

Diblock conjugated oligomers are π-conjugated molecules that contain two segments having distinct frontier orbital energies and HOMO-LUMO gap offsets. These oligomers are of fundamental interest to understand how the distinct π-conjugated segments interact and modify their excited state properties. The current paper reports a study of two series of diblock oligomers that contain oligothiophene (Tn) and 4,7-bis(2-thienyl)-2,1,3-benzothiadiazole (TBT) segments that are coupled by either ethynyl (-C≡C-) or trans-(-C≡C-)2Pt(II)(PBu3)2 acetylide linkers. In these structures, the Tn segment is electron rich (donor), and the TBT is electron poor (acceptor). The diblock oligomers are characterized by steady-state and time-resolved spectroscopy, including UV-visible absorption, fluorescence, fluorescence lifetimes, and ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopy. Studies are compared in several solvents of different polarity and with different excitation wavelengths. The results reveal that the (-C≡C-) linked oligomers feature a delocalized excited state that takes on a charge transfer (CT) character in more polar media. In the (-C≡C-)2Pt(II)(PBu3)2-linked oligomers, there is weak coupling between the Tn and TBT segments. Consequently, short wavelength excitation selectively excites the Tn segment, which then undergoes ultrafast energy transfer (~1 ps) to afford a TBT-localized excited state.

Pharmacokinetics study of ginsenoside Rg1 liposome by pulmonary administration

Ginsenoside Rg1 (Rg1), a monomer saponin component, is one of the components with the highest content in total saponins of Panaxnotoginseng. It had various pharmacological effects. The bioavailability of oral tablets is only 1-20 %, and it is eliminated quickly in the blood. The development of new dosage forms and new routes of administration of ginsenoside Rg1 with sustained release and high bioavailability has become a significant problem to be solved. The Rg1 liposomes study used a thin film dispersion ultrasound method for its preparation. This study focused the pharmacokinetic parameters of ginsenoside Rg1 liposomes in rats through the lung perfusion method. Ginsenoside Rg1 liposomes were round and uniform in shape, the particle size was 2-3 μm, and the encapsulation efficiency of ginsenoside Rg1 liposome was 51.2 %. Results showed that, after pulmonary administration of ginsenoside Rg1, the time of ginsenoside Rg1 detected by Rg1 liposomes was longer than that of Rg1 solution, the relative bioavailability of ginsenoside Rg1 liposome lung administration AUC liposome/AUC solution = 122.67 %. These results provided the scientific theoretical and experimental basis for further development of new dosage forms and new routes of administration of ginsenoside Rg1.

Design, Synthesis, and Characterization of Organometallic BODIPY-Ru(II) Dyads: Redox and Photophysical Properties with Singlet Oxygen Generation Capability†

A series of Ru(II)-acetylide complexes (Ru1, Ru2, and Ru1m) with alkynyl-functionalized borondipyrromethene (BODIPY) conjugates were designed by varying the position of the linker that connects the BODIPY unit to the Ru(II) metal center through acetylide linkage at either the 2-(Ru1) and 2,6-(Ru2) or the meso-phenyl (Ru1m) position of the BODIPY scaffold. The Ru(II) organometallic complexes were characterized by various spectroscopic methods, including nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, infrared (IR) spectroscopy, CHN, and high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) analyses. The Ru(II)-BODIPY conjugates exhibit fascinating electrochemical and photophysical properties. All BODIPY-Ru(II) complexes exhibit strong absorption (εmax = 29,000-72,000 M-1 cm-1) in the visible region (λmax = 502-709 nm). Fluorescence is almost quenched for Ru1 and Ru2, whereas Ru1m shows the residual fluorescence of the corresponding BODIPY core at 517 nm. The application of the BODIPY-Ru(II) dyads as nonporphyrin-based triplet photosensitizers was explored by a method involving the singlet oxygen (1O2)-mediated photo-oxidation of diphenylisobenzofuran. Effective π-conjugation between the BODIPY chromophore and Ru(II) center in the case of Ru1 and Ru2 was found to be necessary to improve intersystem crossing (ISC) and hence the 1O2-sensitizing ability. In addition, electrochemical studies indicate electronic interplay between the metal center and the redox-active BODIPY in the BODIPY-Ru(II) dyads.

Air Tolerant Cadiot-Chodkiewicz and Sonogashira Cross-Couplings

Cadiot-Chodkiewicz cross-couplings generate an unsymmetric buta-1,3-diyne by way of a Cu(I)-catalyzed coupling between a terminal alkyne and a 1-haloalkyne. Despite their widespread use, Cadiot-Chodkiewicz reactions are plagued by the generation of symmetric buta-1,3-diyne side products, formed through competing: (a) formal reductive homo-coupling of the 1-haloalkyne and (b) oxidative (Glaser-Hay/Eglinton) homo-coupling of the terminal alkyne. To overcome this issue, a large excess of one of the two reacting alkynes is commonly deployed, and difficult separations of cross- and homo-coupled products are often encountered. Here, we demonstrate that the use of ascorbate as a reductant leads to a suppression of these unwanted side reactions, hence permitting excellent yields with a roughly stoichiometric ratio of reactants. The procedure also avoids an inert gas atmosphere and uses a sustainable solvent. A similar approach is effective for cross-couplings involving a Pd(0)/Pd(II) catalytic cycle, with air tolerant Sonogashira couplings also established.

Ring Expansion Alkyne Metathesis Polymerization

The synthesis, characterization, and preliminary activity of an unprecedented tethered alkylidyne tungsten complex for ring expansion alkyne metathesis polymerization (REAMP) are reported. The tethered alkylidyne 7 is generated rapidly by combining alkylidyne W(CtBu)(CH2tBu)(O-2,6-i-Pr2C6H3)2 (6) with 1 equiv of an yne-ol proligand (5). Characterized by NMR studies and nuclear Overhauser effect spectroscopy, complex 7 is a dimer. Each metal center contains a tungsten-carbon triple bond tethered to the metal center via an alkoxide ligand. The polymerization of the strained cycloalkyne 3,8-didodecyloxy-5,6-dihydro-11,12-didehydrodibenzo[a,e]-[8]annulene, 8, to generate cyclic polymers was demonstrated. Size exclusion chromatography (SEC) and intrinsic viscosity (η) measurements confirm the polymer's cyclic topology.

A Simple and Practical Bis-N-Heterocyclic Carbene as an Efficient Ligand in Cu-Catalyzed Glaser Reaction

Conjugated diyne derivatives are important scaffolds in modern organic synthetic chemistry. Using the Glaser reaction involves the coupling of terminal alkynes which can efficiently produce conjugated diyne derivatives, while the use of a stoichiometric amount of copper salts, strong inorganic base, and excess oxidants is generally needed. Developing an environmentally friendly and effective method for the construction of symmetrical 1,3-diynes compounds by Glaser coupling is still highly desirable. In this study, we present an economical method for the production of symmetric diynes starting from various terminal acetylenes in a Glaser reaction. A simple and practical bis-N-heterocyclic carbene ligand has been introduced as efficient ligands for the Cu-catalyzed Glaser reaction. High product yields were obtained at 100 °C for a variety of substrates including aliphatic and aromatic terminal alkynes and differently substituted terminal alkynes including the highly sterically hindered substrate 2-methoxy ethynylbenzene or 2-trifluoromethyl ethynylbenzene and a series of functional groups, such as trifluoromethyl group, ester group, carboxyl group, and nitrile group. The established protocol is carried out in air under base-free condition and is operationally simple. These research work suggest that bis-N-heterocyclic carbene could also an appealing ligand for Glaser reaction and provide a reference for the preparation of symmetric 1,3-diynes in industrial filed.

Dual Functional Conjugated Acetylenic Polymers: High-Efficacy Modulation for Organic Photoelectrochemical Transistors and Structural Evolution for Bioelectronic Detection

Conjugated acetylenic polymers (CAPs) have emerged as a unique class of metal-free semiconductors with tunable electrical and optical properties yet their full potential remains largely unexplored. Organic bioelectronics is envisioned to create more opportunities for innovative biomedical applications. Herein, we report a poly(1,4-diethynylbenzene) (pDEB)/NiO gated enhancement-mode poly(ethylene dioxythiophene)-poly(styrene sulfonate) organic photoelectrochemical transistor (OPECT) and its structural evolution toward bioelectronic detection. pDEB was synthesized via copper-mediated Glaser polycondensation of DEB monomers on the NiO/FTO substrate, and the as-synthesized pDEB/NiO/FTO can efficiently modulate the enhancement-mode device with a high current gain. Linking with a sandwich immunoassay, the labeled alkaline phosphatase can catalyze sodium thiophosphate to generate H₂S, which will react with the diacetylene group in pDEB through the Michael addition reaction, resulting in an altered molecular structure and thus the transistor response. Exemplified by HIgG as the model target, the developed biosensor achieves highly sensitive detection with a linear range of 70 fg mL^-1-10 ng mL^-1 and a low detection limit of 28.5 fg mL^-1. This work features the dual functional CAP-gated OPECT, providing not only a novel gating module but also a structurally new rationale for bioelectronic detection.

Designing of new tetrahydro-β-carboline-based ABCG2 inhibitors using 3D-QSAR, molecular docking, and DFT tools

Human ATP-binding cassette superfamily G member 2 (ABCG2) protein is a member of the ABC transporter family, which is responsible for multidrug resistance (MDR) in cancerous cells. MDR reduces the effectiveness of chemotherapy in breast cancer, which is one of the leading causes of death in women globally. MDR in cancer cells is one of the immediate signs of progression of resistance; thus, various anticancer drugs can be designed. To reduce MDR, we utilized the tetrahydro-β-carboline (THβC) compound library. We accomplished a three-dimensional quantitative structure-activity relationship (3D-QSAR), scaffold hopping to design a new library of compounds of THβC, and further molecular docking, induced-fit docking (IFD), molecular mechanics energies combined with generalized born and surface area continuum solvation (MM-GBSA), drug-like features, ADMET properties, and density functional theory (DFT) studies were performed. From these studies, the best 3D-QSAR model (r2 = 0.99, q2 = 0.92) was found, and the necessity of electrostatic, steric, and hydrophobic field effects were determined that could modulate bioactivity. Moreover, based on electrostatic, steric, and hydrophobic field notations, new THβC derivatives (3409) were designed. These findings might provide new insight for researchers to perform in vitro and in vivo studies for better antagonists against MDR in treating breast cancer.Communicated by Ramaswamy H. Sarma.

Non-covalent interactions (NCIs) in π-conjugated functional materials: advances and perspectives

The design and development of functional materials with real-life applications are highly demanding. Understanding and controlling inter- and intra-molecular interactions provide opportunities to design new materials. A judicious manipulation of the molecular structure significantly alters such interactions and can boost selected properties and functions of the material. There is burgeoning evidence of the beneficial effects of non-covalent interactions (NCIs), showing that manipulating NCIs may generate functional materials with a wide variety of physical properties leading to applications in catalysis, drug delivery, crystal engineering, etc. This prompted us to review the implications of NCIs on the molecular packing, optical properties, and applications of functional π-conjugated materials. To this end, this tutorial review will cover different types of interactions (electrostatic, π-interactions, metallophilic, etc.) and their impact on π-conjugated materials. Attempts have also been made to delineate the effects of weak interactions on opto-electronic (O-E) applications.

Green carbon-carbon homocoupling of terminal alkynes by a silica supported Cu(II)-hydrazone coordination compound

A Cu(II) complex, [Cu(HL)(NO₃)(CH₃OH)]·CH₃OH (1), was obtained by the reaction of Cu(NO₃)₂·3H₂O and H2L in methanol solvent (H2L is (E)-4-amino-N'-(2-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzylidene)benzohydrazide). H2L and compound 1 were characterized by various spectroscopic analyses and the molecular structure of [Cu(HL)(NO₃)(CH₃OH)]·CH₃OH was determined by single-crystal X-ray analysis. The results indicated the product is a mononuclear Cu(II) complex and contains a free NH₂ functional group on the structure of the ligand. [Cu(HL)(NO₃)(CH₃OH)]·CH₃OH was used for the preparation of a heterogeneous catalyst by supporting it on functionalized silica gel. The heterogeneous catalyst (Si-Cu) was prepared by an amidification reaction of [Cu(HL)(NO₃)(CH₃OH)]·CH₃OH with functionalized silica gel. The resulting silica-supported catalyst (Si-Cu) was characterized by TGA, FT-IR, EPR, DRS, EDS, XRD, SEM and XPS analyses. Si-Cu was employed in a carbon-carbon coupling reaction and the effects of the amount of Si-Cu and temperature were investigated in the catalytic coupling. The structure of one of the products of the catalytic reactions (C₁₆H₂₂O₂, CP1) was determined by single-crystal X-ray analysis, which proved the formation of a C-C bond and the production of di-acetylene by homocoupling of terminal alkyne. This catalytic system is stable and it can be reused for a coupling reaction without a significant change in its catalytic activity.

Synthesis, characterization, anticancer and in silico studies of a pyrazole-tethered thiazolidine-2,4-dione derivative

A new pyrazole-tethered thiazolidine-2,4-dione derivative (8) has been synthesized by the Knoevenagel condensation of 3-(4-nitrophenyl)-1-phenyl-1H-pyrazole-4-carbaldehyde (4) and 3-(2,4-dioxothiazolidin-3-yl)propanenitrile (7). The structure of the final compound was confirmed by standard spectroscopic techniques including IR spectroscopy, ¹H-NMR spectroscopy, and ESI-MS mass spectrometry. Molecular features including frontier molecular orbital (HOMO-LUMO) energies, reactivity descriptors and molecular electrostatic potential (ESP) of the title molecule were determined using density functional theory (DFT) calculation. The in vitro cytotoxicity of both the intermediate (4) and final (8) compounds were investigated against cancerous (SW-480 and MCF-7) and normal (HEK-293) cell lines by MTT assay. Compound (8) displayed higher activity than (4) with higher sensitivity against breast cancer cell line and lesser toxicity. The experimental data were further complemented by docking and absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion (ADME) studies.Communicated by Ramaswamy H. Sarma.

Copper-catalyzed deacetonative Sonogashira coupling

A convenient Pd- and phosphine-free protocol for assembling internal alkynes from tertiary propargyl alcohols and (het)aryl halides has been developed. The proposed tandem approach includes the base-promoted retro-Favorskii fragmentation followed by Cu-catalyzed C(sp)-C(sp²) cross-coupling. The use of inexpensive reagents (e.g. a catalyst, additives, a base, and a solvent) and good functional group tolerance make the procedure practical and cost-effective. The synthetic utility of the method was demonstrated by a smooth alkynylation of vinyl iodides derived from natural steroidal hormones.

Bis-Alkynyl Complexes of Fe(III) Tetraaza Macrocycles─A Tale of Two Rings

Reported herein are new Fe bis-alkynyl complexes [Fe^III(L)(C₂R)₂]BPh₄ based on tetraimine macrocycle (L = HMTI = meso-5,5,7,12,12,14-hexamethyl-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradeca-1,3,8,10-tetraene; 1a-1c; R = C₆H₅ (a), C₁₀H₉ (b), SiMe₃ (c)) and tetraamine macrocycle (L = HMC = meso-5,5,7,12,12,14-hexamethyl-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane; 2a-2c). These complexes have been characterized using single-crystal X-ray diffraction, electronic absorption spectroscopy, and cyclic and differential pulse voltammetry. Spectroelectrochemical studies of 1a and 2a allowed for investigation of the Fe^II oxidation state, which revealed a strong dependence on the nature of the macrocycle for both the energies of the Fe^II to C₂Ph metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) and the ν(C≡C). The ν(C≡C) was further influenced by the oxidation state, though sensitivity to the formal metal oxidation state was much higher in the case of 2a than in 1a. These findings are rationalized on the basis of the relative energies of the formally metal-centered orbitals via density functional theory calculations.

Synthesis of Mixed Arylalkyl Tertiary Phosphines via the Grignard Approach

Trialkyl and triaryl phosphines are important classes of ligands in the field of catalysis and materials research. The wide usability of these low-valent phosphines has led to the design and development of new synthesis routes for a variety of phosphines. In the present work, we report the synthesis and characterization of some mixed arylalkyl tertiary phosphines via the Grignard approach. A new asymmetric phosphine is characterized extensively by multi-spectroscopic techniques. IR and UV–Vis spectra of some selected compounds are also compared and discussed. Density functional theory (DFT)-calculated results support the formation of the new compounds.

Phenylene as an efficient mediator for intermetallic electronic coupling

The new compound [(NC)Ru₂(ap)₄]₂(μ-1,4-C₆H₄) (ap = 2-anilinopyridinate) was prepared to address the open question of whether a 1,4-phenylene bridge can mediate intermetallic electronic coupling. As a manifestation of strong coupling, hole delocalization between the Ru₂ centers on the IR time scale (10^-14 s) was established using spectroelectrochemistry. An orbital mechanism for coupling was elaborated with DFT analysis.

The Search for Efficient True Blue and Deep Blue Emitters: An Overview of Platinum Carbene Acetylide Complexes

Despite significant strides achieved in organic light emitting diode (OLED) based display technologies during the last decade, the search for highly stable and efficient true blue/deep blue emitters continues to remain elusive. During the past decade, emitters with the basic molecular scaffold consisting of Pt(II) acetylides and N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands have opened interesting opportunities to tune the emission properties with desired chromaticity in the blue and deep blue region. With an aim to achieve the desired CIE coordinates along with low device roll-off efficiencies and satisfactory color purity, a number of variations on the basic molecular fragment have been made. A number of NHC Pt(II) alkyne complexes bearing monodentate, bidentate and tridentate ligands have been synthesized and their photophysical investigations have been reported. Although NHC Pt(II) alkyne complexes have been explored in other areas of applications, much of the investigations have been primarily focused for their interesting emission properties appearing particularly in the shorter wavelength (450-495 nm) part of the electromagnetic spectrum for organic light emitting diode (OLED) devices. In this review, we provide an overview of the investigated NHC Pt(II) acetylide complexes by detailing their synthesis, luminescence properties, performance in devices and future perspectives.

Azolium Aurates as Pre-Catalysts for the Oxidative Coupling of Terminal Alkynes under Mild Conditions

A simple and efficient method for the oxidative coupling of terminal alkynes is reported for the first time, making use of imidazol(in)ium aurates as pre-catalysts. This approach displays high functional group tolerance and leads to a broad range of 1,3-diyne compounds in moderate to excellent yields using low catalyst loading and is performed in air under mild and sustainable conditions.

Activatable fluorescence molecular imaging and anti-tumor effects investigation of GSH-sensitive BRD4 ligands

Overexpression of bromodomain 4 (BRD4) is closely correlated with a variety of human cancers by regulating the histone post-translational modifications, which renders BRD4 a promising target for pharmacological discoveries of novel therapeutic agents for cancer therapy. We herein present the design, chemical synthesis, cellular imaging and biological assessment of a novel tumor-sensitive BRD4 ligand (compound 4) by introducing anticancer BRD4 inhibitor into naphthalimide moiety (fluorescent reporter) via a sulfonamide unit as glutathione (GSH)-specific cleavable linker. Upon reaction with abundant intramolecular GSH in cancer cells or free GSH in aqueous solution (pH = 7.4), sulfonamide cleavage of 4 occurs, leading to the release of BRD4 inhibitor and concomitant fluorescence-on. This activatable fluorescence molecular imaging was demonstrated to preferentially occur in tumor cells. Moreover, towards cancer cell lines MGC-803 cells and THP-1, compound 4 was identified to show better antitumor efficacy than net BRD4 inhibitor. Collectively, this study presents a drug delivery strategy, wherein the drug release can be directly monitored in the cellular content by fluorescence imaging, and provides a valuable compound 4 as a potential antitumor agent. Compound 4 may represent a useful tool for explorative studies of BRD4 inhibition, such as an improved understanding of BRD4 inhibitor release-related information.

Electro-mechanically switchable hydrocarbons based on [8]annulenes

Pure hydrocarbons with shape and conjugation properties that can be switched by external stimuli is an intriguing prospect in the design of new responsive materials and single-molecule electronics. Here, we develop an oligomeric [8]annulene-based material that combines a remarkably efficient topological switching upon redox changes with structural simplicity, stability, and straightforward synthesis: 5,12-alkyne linked dibenzo[a,e]cyclooctatetraenes (dbCOTs). Upon reduction, the structures accommodate a reversible reorganization from a pseudo-conjugated tub-shape to a conjugated aromatic system. This switching in oligomeric structures gives rise to multiple defined states that are deconvoluted by electrochemical, NMR, and optical methods. The combination of stable electromechanical responsivity and ability to relay electrons stepwise through an extended (pseudo-conjugated) π-system in partially reduced structures validate alkyne linked dbCOTs as a practical platform for developing new responsive materials and switches based on [8]annulene cores.

Pure hydrocarbons with properties that can be switched by external stimuli are interesting for the design and development of new responsive materials. Here, the authors develop an oligomeric [8]annulene-based material that combines topological switching upon redox changes with structural simplicity, stability, and straightforward synthesis.

Efficient capture of airborne PM by nanotubular conjugated microporous polymers based filters under harsh conditions

The exploitation of high-performance filters which can capture and remove airborne particulate matter (PM) in harsh conditions is greatly important to limit the serious effect of PM on human health. Herein, we demonstrate a simple approach for the creation of robust and hierarchically porous filters based on conjugated microporous polymers (CMPs) nanotubes for efficient PM capture. Taking advantage of their inherently superhydrophobic wettability, the CMPs-based filters possess high filtration efficiency of higher than 99.4% for PM_0.3 and 99.9% for PM_2.5 and PM₁₀, respectively, even in high humidity environment (RH ≥ 94%). The CMPs-based filters show highly physicochemical and thermal stability, e.g., by calcination at 500 °C for 2 h, the filtration efficiency of the samples still reaches as great as 99.4% for both PM_2.5 and PM₁₀ with a low-pressure drop of only 10 Pa. In addition, these CMPs-based filters can be easily regenerated and their high PM filtration efficiency remains nearly unchanged by a simple methanol washing. More interestingly, the CMPs-based filters also exhibit superior antibacterial performance, which enables them to sterilize or eliminate the bacteria possibly loaded on PM pollutions, thus showing great potential for various applications such as PM removal, air purification and so on.

A new supramolecular bonding motif involving NH bonds of ammonium salts and macrocycles derived from platinum corners and butadiynediyl linkers

The title Pt4C16 species can give roughly planar geometries in crystals, but afford folded forms with ammonium cations, which are captured like unsuspecting prey and potentially fossilized as with the ancient creatures who once roamed the galaxy.

Advanced Organic Transistor-Based Sensors Utilizing a Solvatochromic Medium with Twisted Intramolecular Charge-Transfer Behavior and Its Application to Ammonia Gas Detection

Here, we designed and developed an organic field-effect transistor (OFET)-based gas sensor by applying solvatochromic dye (Nile red, NR) with twisted intramolecular charge-transfer (TICT) behavior depending on the polarity of the surrounding molecules, as an auxiliary NR sensing medium (aNR-SM). As a polar molecule approaches, intra-charge transfers from the donor diethylamine group to the ketone group occur in the NR molecule, resulting in the twisting of the donor functional group and thereby increasing its dipole moment. Using this characteristic, NR was applied as an auxiliary sensing medium to the OFET for detecting ammonia (NH₃), a representative toxic gas. The Top-NR case, where the aNR-SM covers only the top of the organic semiconductor layer, showed the best gas sensing performance, and its response and recovery rates were improved by 46 and 94%, respectively, compared to the pristine case. More importantly, a sensitivity of 0.87 ± 0.045 ppm^-1 % was measured, having almost perfect linearity (0.999) over the range of measured NH₃ concentrations, which is the result of solving the saturation problem in the sensing characteristics of the OFET-based gas sensor. Our result not only improved the sensing performance of the OFET-based sensor but also made an important advance in that the reliability of the sensing performance was easily secured by applying solvatochromic and TICT behaviors of an auxiliary sensing medium.

Heterometal Grafted Metalla-ynes and Poly(metalla-ynes): A Review on Structure-Property Relationships and Applications

Metalla-ynes and poly(metalla-ynes) have emerged as unique molecular scaffolds with fascinating structural features and intriguing photo-luminescence (PL) properties. Their rigid-rod conducting backbone with tunable photo-physical properties has generated immense research interests for the design and development of application-oriented functional materials. Introducing a second d- or f-block metal fragment in the main-chain or side-chain of a metalla-yne and poly(metalla-yne) was found to further modulate the underlying features/properties. This review focuses on the photo-physical properties and opto-electronic (O-E) applications of heterometal grafted metalla-ynes and poly(metalla-ynes).

2-Nitro- and 4-fluorocinnamaldehyde based receptors as naked-eye chemosensors to potential molecular keypad lock

New-generation chemosensors desire small organic molecules that are easy to synthesise and cost-effective. As a new interdisciplinary area of research, the integration of these chemosensors into keypad locks or other advanced communication protocols is becoming increasingly popular. Our lab has developed new chemosensor probes that contain 2-nitro- (1-3) and 4-fluoro-cinnamaldehyde (4-6) and applied them to the anion recognition and sensing process. Probes 1-6 are colorimetric sensors for naked-eye detection of AcO-/CN-/F-, while probes 4-6 could differentiate between F- and AcO-/CN- anions in acetonitrile. Using the density functional theory (DFT), it was found that probes 1-6 acted as effective chemosensors. By using Probe 5 as a chemosensor, we explored colorimetric recognition of multiple anions in more detail. Probe 5 was tested in combination with a combinatorial approach to demonstrate pattern-generation capability and its ability to distinguish among chemical inputs based on concentration. After pattern discrimination using principal component analysis (PCA), we examined anion selectivity using DFT computation. In our study, probe 5 demonstrates excellent performance as a chemosensor and shows promise as a future molecular-level keypad lock system.

Boraiminolithium: An Iminoborane-Transfer Reagent

BN/CC isosterism can give rise to attractive molecules with unique physical or chemical properties. We report here the synthesis, characterization, and reactivities of the boraiminolithium species 2, a room-temperature-stable crystalline solid accessible through a facile dehydrohalogenation/deprotonation reaction. This species, bearing a polarized B≡N triple bond and an anionic N center, is the first example of a BN analogue to the well-known alkynyllithium molecules (lithium acetylides). It has demonstrated a remarkable ability for iminoborane-transfer reactions, which allows for the isolation of a series of unprecedented N-functionalized iminoboranes as well as novel main-group heterocycles. Stable boraiminolithium reagents may become powerful tools in the exploration of new BN-containing building blocks for synthetic chemistry and materials science.

Editing Light Emission with Stable Crystalline Covalent Organic Frameworks via Wall Surface Perturbation

The ordered π skeletons of covalent organic frameworks make them viable light-emitting materials but their limited tunability has precluded further implementation. Here we report the synthesis of hydrazone-linked frameworks which are stable in water, acid, and base, and demonstrate their utility as a platform for light emission. The polygonal backbone is designed to be luminescent and partially π conjugated while the pore wall is docked with single atom or unit to induce resonance, hyperconjugation, and tautomerization effects. These effects can be transmitted to the backbone, so that the framework can emit three primary colors of light. The wall can be perturbated with multiple surface sites, rendering the material able to edit diverse emission colors in a predesignable and digital way. The systems show high activity, stability, tunability, and sensibility: a set of features attractive for light-emitting and sensing applications.

Panchromatic BODIPY dyes: Synthesis and optoelectronic properties

Panchromatic dyes covering the visible and near-infrared (Vis/NIR) region are of considerable interest in the fields of DSSCs and OPVs as well as infrared sensing due to their efficient solar energy harvesting. Herein, we report two BODIPY dyes displaying a panchromatic absorption with an extension to the near-infrared range, by the introduction of bis(4-methoxyphenyl)aminophenylvinyl unit at 3,5-position of BODIPY core through Knoevenagel condensation reactions. The optoelectronic properties were fully investigated by spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry (CV) measurements and DFT calculations. Our research provides a simple strategy to broaden the absorption spectrum of BODIPY dyes.

Functional Materials Based on Cyclometalated Platinum(II) β-Diketonate Complexes: A Review of Structure-Property Relationships and Applications

Square planar organoplatinum(II) complexes have garnered immense interest in the area of materials research. The combination of the Pt(II) fragment with mono-, bi- tri- and tetradentate organic ligands gives rise to a large variety of complexes with intriguing properties, especially cyclometalated Pt(II) complexes in which ligands are connected through covalent bonds demonstrate higher stability, excellent photoluminescence properties, and diverse applications. The properties and applications of the Pt(II)-based materials can be smartly fine-tuned via a judicious selection of the cyclometalating as well as ancillary ligands. In this review, attempts have been made to provide a brief review of the recent developments of neutral Pt(II) organometallic complexes bearing bidentate cyclometalating ligands and β-diketonate ancillary ligands, i.e., (C^N)Pt(O^O) and (C^C)Pt(O^O) derivatives. Both small (monomeric, dimeric) and large (polymeric) materials have been considered. We critically assessed the role of functionalities (ligands) on photophysical properties and their impact on applications.

Simple synthesis of poly (1,4-bis(dodecyloxy)-2,5-diethynylbenzene)/Pd composites with catalytic activity in Sonogashira coupling reaction

Palladium on the polymeric materials (Pd@polymer) as a catalyst is now very promising due to its great prospect for catalytic application. Such material in the form of composites is found to be stable and can be applied as catalyst in organic synthesis like Sonogashira coupling reaction. In the present work, Pd containing conjugated poly-ynes composites (Poly (1,4-bis(dodecyloxy)-2,5-diethynylbenzene) (Poly-DEB)/Pd) were synthesized by varying the addition of Pd in the range of equivalent weight of 8:4, 8:2 and 8:1, maintaining the fixed amount of 1,4-bis(dodecyloxy)-2,5-diethynylbenzene (DEB) through chemical oxidative polymerization technique. Both FTIR and UV-visible spectroscopy confirmed the interactions between DEB and Pd in the composites. The DSC data revealed the improved melting temperature as well as the crystallinity of the composites than the DEB. The PL spectra showed its florescence property. The catalytic capability of the Poly-DEB/Pd composites were examined using the Sonogashira coupling reactions, which demonstrated good yields. The suggested synthetic protocol is very facile, reproducible and beneficial for the fabrication of diverse mono and bimetallic composites with conjugated polymers. The present study also demonstrates the new example of Poly-DEB/Pd composites catalyzed Sonogashira coupling reaction. These composites have a possibility to develop as a commercial reagent in various organic synthesis subjects to its application prospects.

A unique series of chromium(iii) mono-alkynyl complexes supported by tetraazamacrocycles

Described herein is the synthesis and characterization of macrocyclic Cr^III mono-alkynyl complexes. By using the meso-form of the tetraazamacrocycle HMC (HMC = 5,5,7,12,12,14-hexamethyl-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane), trans-[Cr(HMC)(C₂Ph)Cl]OTf (1a), trans-[Cr(HMC)(C₂Np)Cl]OTf (2a), trans-[Cr(HMC)(C₂C₆H₄^tBu)Cl]OTf (3a), and trans-[Cr(HMC)(C₂(3,5-Cl₂C₆H₃))Cl]OTf (4a) complexes have been realized. These complexes were synthesized in high yield through the reaction of trans-[Cr(meso-HMC)(C₂Ar)₂]OTf (1b-4b) with stoichiometric amounts of methanolic HCl. Single crystal X-ray diffraction showed that the trans-stereochemistry and pseudo-octahedral geometry is retained in the desired mono-alkynyl complexes. The absorption spectra of complexes 1a-4a display d-d bands with distinct vibronic progressions that are slightly red shifted from trans-[Cr(HMC)(C₂Ar)₂]⁺ with approximately halved molar extinction coefficients. Time-delayed measurements of the emission spectra for complexes 1a-4a at 77 K revealed phosphorescence with lifetimes ranging between 343 μs (4a) and 397 μs (1a). The phosphorescence spectra of 1a-4a also exhibit more structuring than the bis-alkynyl complexes due to a strengthened vibronic coupling between the Cr^III metal center and alkynyl ligands.

Investigation of second-order nonlinear optical responses in a series of V-shaped binuclear platinum(ii) complexes

A series of four D-(π-Pt-π-A)₂ new V-shaped binuclear platinum(ii) complexes bearing a diphenylpyranylidene ligand as a pro-aromatic donor group (D) and various electron-attracting groups (A) separated by platinum bis-acetylide fragments have been synthesized, characterized and studied for their electrochemical, photophysical and second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) properties. The nonlinear optical properties of these complexes have been determined by using the Electric-Field-Induced Second Harmonic (EFISH) generation technique, and their optical properties have been rationalized by Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory (TD-DFT) calculations relying on a range-separated hybrid. All complexes display positive μβ₀ values. In addition, the second-order NLO responses of the complexes could be easily modulated by incorporating various end-capped electron-attracting groups, namely malononitrile, indane-1,3-dione, pyrimidine and pyrimidinium. Remarkably, complex 7 bearing a pyrimidinium fragment displays the highest μβ₀ value among all the complexes of this series. Its NLO response is twice as high as that of the mononuclear analogue complex RD2, which has been confirmed both experimentally and theoretically.
