Abstract
With the increasing demand for water in hydroponic systems and agricultural irrigation, viral diseases have seriously affected the yield and quality of crops. By removing plant viruses in water environments, virus transmission can be prevented and agricultural production and ecosystems can be protected. But so far, there have been few reports on the removal of plant viruses in water environments. Herein, in this study, easily recyclable biomass-based carbon nanotubes catalysts were synthesized with varying metal activities to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS). Among them, the magnetic 0.125Fe@NCNTs-1/PMS system showed the best overall removal performance against pepper mild mottle virus, with a 5.9 log10 removal within 1 min. Notably, the key reactive species in the 0.125Fe@NCNTs-1/PMS system is 1O2, which can maintain good removal effect in real water matrices (river water and tap water). Through RNA fragment analyses and label free analysis, it was found that this system could effectively cleave virus particles, destroy viral proteins and expose their genome. The capsid protein of pepper mild mottle virus was effectively decomposed where serine may be the main attacking sites by 1O2. Long viral RNA fragments (3349 and 1642 nt) were cut into smaller fragments (∼160 nt) and caused their degradation. In summary, this study contributes to controlling the spread of plant viruses in real water environment, which will potentially help protect agricultural production and food safety, and improve the health and sustainability of ecosystems.

Abstract
Rotavirus (RV) causes severe gastroenteritis in infants and young children worldwide. Fresh produce has been reported as a source of RV infection during production and harvesting, leading to foodborne illness. Cases of contamination from contact surfaces have also been reported. Therefore, this study applied chemical methods (chlorine dioxide [ClO2], peracetic acid [PAA]), physical methods (gamma irradiation), and a combination of methods (disinfectants + gamma irradiation) to inactivate RV on food contact surfaces (stainless steel) and food (lettuce). Furthermore, the changes in food quality after the combined treatments were assessed. The results of the chemical treatment showed that RV was reduced below the detection limit after treatment for 1 min with 20 ppm ClO2 or 120 ppm PAA in RV suspension. On stainless steel, treatment with 200 ppm ClO2 or 2,000 ppm PAA reduced contaminated RV by more than 4 log. A 5 min treatment with 50 ppm ClO2 or 80 ppm PAA on lettuce reduced the RV by 1.79 and 0.75 log, respectively. Treatment with 4 kGy of gamma irradiation resulted in more than 5 log reduction in suspensions and 3.27 log reduction on food. The sequential treatments, including 30 ppm ClO2 followed by 1.5 kGy gamma irradiation and 80 ppm PAA followed by 1.5 kGy gamma irradiation, showed additional inactivation effects (p < 0.05) compared to each single treatment. No changes in food quality (color difference and texture) were observed after any treatments, suggesting that the combined treatment of both ClO2 and gamma irradiation and PAA and gamma irradiation can be applied in the fresh food industry to reduce RV contamination.

Abstract
In recent years, the peracetic acid (PAA)-based advanced oxidation process (AOPs) has garnered significant attention in the field of water treatment due to rapid response time and environmentally-friendliness. The activation of PAA systems by diverse carbon-based materials plays a crucial role in addressing emerging environmental contaminants, including various types, structures, and modified forms of carbon materials. However, the structural characteristics and structure-activity relationship of carbon-based materials in the activation of PAA are intricate, while the degradation pathways and dominant active species exhibit diversity. Therefore, it is imperative to elucidate the developmental process of the carbon-based materials/PAA system through resource integration and logical categorization, thereby indicating potential avenues for future research. The present paper comprehensively reviews the structural characteristics and action mechanism of carbon-based materials in PAA system, while also analyzing the development, properties, and activation mechanism of heteroatom-doped carbon-based materials in this system. In conclusion, this study has effectively organized the resources pertaining to prominent research direction of comprehensive remediation of environmental water pollution, thereby elucidating the underlying logic and thought process. Consequently, it establishes robust theoretical foundation for future investigations and applications involving carbon-based materials/PAA system.

Abstract
SUMMARYUnderstanding how commonly used chemical microbicides affect pathogenic microorganisms is important for formulation of microbicides. This review focuses on the mechanism(s) of action of chemical microbicides commonly used in infection prevention and control. Contrary to the typical site-specific mode of action of antibiotics, microbicides often act via multiple targets, causing rapid and irreversible damage to microbes. In the case of viruses, the envelope or protein capsid is usually the primary structural target, resulting in loss of envelope integrity or denaturation of proteins in the capsid, causing loss of the receptor-binding domain for host cell receptors, and/or breakdown of other viral proteins or nucleic acids. However, for certain virucidal microbicides, the nucleic acid may be a significant site of action. The region of primary damage to the protein or nucleic acid is site-specific and may vary with the virus type. Due to their greater complexity and metabolism, bacteria and fungi offer more targets. The rapid and irreversible damage to microbes may result from solubilization of lipid components and denaturation of enzymes involved in the transport of nutrients. Formulation of microbicidal actives that attack multiple sites on microbes, or control of the pH, addition of preservatives or potentiators, and so on, can increase the spectrum of action against pathogens and reduce both the concentrations and times needed to achieve microbicidal activity against the target pathogens.

Abstract
Widespread outbreaks of threatening infections caused by unknown pathogens and water transmission have spawned the development of adsorption methods for pathogen elimination. We proposed a biochar functionalization strategy involving ε-polylysine (PLL), a bio-macromolecular poly(amino acid)s with variable folding conformations, as a "pathogen gripper" on biochar. PLL was successfully bridged onto biochar via polydopamine (PDA) crosslinking. The extension of electropositive side chains within PLL enables the capture of both nanoscale viruses and micrometer-scale bacteria in water, achieving excellent removal performances. This functionalized biochar was tentatively incorporated into ultrafiltration (UF) system, to achieve effective and controllable adsorption and retention of pathogens, and to realize the transfer of pathogens from membrane surface/pore to biochar surface as well as flushing water. The biochar-amended UF systems presents complete retention (∼7 LRV) and hydraulic elution of pathogens into membrane flushing water. Improvements in removal of organics and anti-fouling capability were observed, indicating the broken trade-off in UF pathogen removal dependent on irreversible fouling. Chemical characterizations revealed adsorption mechanisms encompassing electrostatic/hydrophobic interactions, pore filling, electron transfer, chemical bonding and secondary structure transitions. Microscopic and mechanical analyses validated the mechanisms for rapid adsorption and pathogen lysis. Low-concentration alkaline solution for used biochar regeneration, facilitated the deprotonation and transformation of PLL side chain to folded structures (α-helix/β-sheet). Biochar regeneration process also promoted the effective detachment/inactivation of pathogens and protection of functional groups on biochar, corroborated by physicochemical inspection and molecular dynamics simulation. The foldability of poly(amino acid)s acting like dynamic arms, significantly contributed to pathogen capture/desorption/inactivation and biochar regeneration. This study also inspires future investigation for performances of UF systems amended by poly(amino acid)s-functionalized biochar under diverse pressure, temperature, reactive oxygen species of feeds and chemical cleaning solutions, with far-reaching implications for public health, environmental applications of biochar, and UF process improvement.

Abstract
Combinations of UV with oxidants can initiate advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) and enhance bacterial inactivation. However, the effectiveness and mechanisms of UV-AOPs in damaging nucleic acids (e.g., antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs)) and cell integrity represent a knowledge gap. This study comprehensively compared ARG degradation and cell membrane damage under three different UV-AOPs. The extracellular ARG (eARG) removal efficiency followed the order of UV/chlorine > UV/H2O2 > UV/peracetic acid (PAA). Hydroxyl radical (•OH) and reactive chlorine species (RCS) largely contributed to eARG removal, while organic radicals made a minor contribution. For intracellular ARGs (iARGs), UV/H2O2 did not remove better than UV alone due to the scavenging of •OH by cell components, whereas UV/PAA provided a modest synergism, likely due to diffusion of PAA into cells and intracellular •OH generation. Comparatively, UV/chlorine achieved significant synergistic iARG removal, suggesting the critical role of the RCS in resisting cellular scavenging and inactivating ARGs. Additionally, flow cytometry analysis demonstrated that membrane damage was mainly attributed to chlorine oxidation, while the impacts of radicals, H2O2, and PAA were negligible. These results provide mechanistic insights into bacterial inactivation and fate of ARGs during UV-AOPs, and shed light on the suitability of quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) and flow cytometry in assessing disinfection performance.

Abstract
Excessive proliferation of algae in water depletes dissolved oxygen, resulting in the demise of aquatic life and environmental damage. This study delves into the effectiveness of the dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma activated peracetic acid (PAA) system in deactivating Chlorella. Within 15 min, the algae removal effectiveness reached 89 % under ideal trial conditions. DBD plasma activation of PAA augmented the concentration of reactive species such as ·OH, 1O2, and organic radicals (RO·) in the solution, which are involved in the process of cell inactivation. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) within Chlorella cells continued to rise as a result of treatment-induced damage to the morphological structure and cell membrane of the organism. DNA and chlorophyll-a (Chl-a), were oxidized and destroyed by these invasive active compounds. This study presents an efficient advanced oxidation method to destroy algal cells and adds an alternative strategy for algal control in areas where eutrophication occurs.

Abstract
The sensitivity of enteroviruses to disinfectants varies among genetically similar variants and coincides with amino acid changes in capsid proteins, although the effect of individual substitutions remains unknown. Here, we employed reverse genetics to investigate how amino acid substitutions in coxsackievirus B5 (CVB5) capsid proteins affect the virus' sensitivity to free chlorine and heat treatment. Of ten amino acid changes observed in CVB5 variants with free chlorine resistance, none significantly reduced the chlorine sensitivity, indicating a minor role of the capsid composition in chlorine sensitivity of CVB5. Conversely, a subset of these amino acid changes located at the C-terminal region of viral protein 1 led to reduced heat sensitivity. Cryo-electron microscopy revealed that these changes affect the assembly of intermediate viral states (altered and empty particles), suggesting that the mechanism for reduced heat sensitivity could be related to improved molecular packing of CVB5, resulting in greater stability or altered dynamics of virus uncoating during infection.

Abstract
Three lipid-enveloped viruses (bovine viral diarrhea virus [BVDV], vaccinia virus, and severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 [SARS-CoV-2]) were evaluated in side-by-side liquid inactivation efficacy studies of low pH (3.0 to 3.1) treatment and of the non-formulated microbicidal actives sodium hypochlorite (100 ppm), ethanol (70%), quaternary ammonium compound BTC® 835 (100 ppm), and peracetic acid (100 ppm). Low pH was evaluated at 10 and 60 min contact times, and the microbicides were evaluated at 1 min contact time at room temperature per the ASTM E1052 standard. In each case, 5% animal serum was included in the viral inoculum as a challenge soil load. The three viruses displayed similar susceptibility to sodium hypochlorite and ethanol, with complete inactivation resulting. Significant differences in susceptibility to BTC® 835 and peracetic acid were identified, with the ordering of the three viruses for susceptibility to BTC® 835 being SARS-CoV-2 > vaccinia virus = BVDV, and the ordering for peracetic acid being vaccinia virus > SARS-CoV-2 > BVDV. The ordering for susceptibility to low pH treatment (60 min contact time) was vaccinia virus > SARS-CoV-2 > BVDV. Not all enveloped viruses display equivalent susceptibilities to inactivation approaches. For the chemistries evaluated here, BVDV appears to represent a worst-case enveloped virus.

Abstract
Bacillus spp. are often used as probiotics; however, they can be infected by phages, leading to significant economic losses. Biocidal and thermal treatments are considered rapid and effective methods for controlling microbial contamination. To prevent viral contamination in industrial dairy production, the impact of temperature and biocides on the viability of Bacillus methylotrophic phage BM-P1 was assessed. The results demonstrated that reconstituted skim milk (RSM) as a medium showed the most effective protective effect on phage BM-P1. Treatment at 90°C for 5 min or 72°C for 10 min inactivated it to nondetectable levels from the initial titer of 7.19 ± 0.11 log, regardless of the culture medium. Sodium hypochlorite exhibited the best inactivating effect, which could reduce the phage titer below the detection level in 4 min at 50 ppm. Additionally, treatment with 75% ethanol for 20 min or 50% isopropanol for 30 min could achieve inactivation to nondetectable levels. The inactivating effect of peracetic acid was limited; even when treated at the highest concentration (0.45%) for 60 min, only a 2.47 ± 0.17 log reduction was observed. This study may provide some theoretical basis and data support for establishing measures against Bacillus spp. phages.

Abstract
Peracetic acid (PAA) disinfection is an emerging wastewater disinfection process. Its advantages include excellent pathogen inactivation performance and little generation of toxic and harmful disinfection byproducts. The objective of this review is to comprehensively analyze the experimental data and scientific information related to PAA-based disinfection processes. Kinetic models and modeling frameworks are discussed to provide effective tools to assess pathogen inactivation efficacy. Then, the efficacy of PAA-based disinfection processes for pathogen inactivation is summarized, and the inactivation mechanisms involved in disinfection and the interactions of PAA with conventional disinfection processes are elaborated. Subsequently, the risk of pathogen regrowth after PAA-based disinfection process is clearly discussed. Finally, to address ecological risks related to PAA-based disinfection, its impact on the spread of antibiotic-resistant bacteria and the transfer of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) is also assessed. Among advanced PAA-based disinfection processes, ultraviolet/PAA is promising not only because it has practical application value but also because pathogen regrowth can be inhibited and ARGs transfer risk can be significantly reduced via this process. This review presents valuable and comprehensive information to provide an in-depth understanding of PAA as an alternative wastewater disinfection technology.

Abstract
Peroxyacids (POAs) are a promising alternative to chlorine for reducing the formation of disinfection byproducts. However, their capacity for microbial inactivation and mechanisms of action require further investigation. We evaluated the efficacy of three POAs (performic acid (PFA), peracetic acid (PAA), and perpropionic acid (PPA)) and chlor(am)ine for inactivation of four representative microorganisms (Escherichia coli (Gram-negative bacteria), Staphylococcus epidermidis (Gram-positive bacteria), MS2 bacteriophage (nonenveloped virus), and Φ6 (enveloped virus)) and for reaction rates with biomolecules (amino acids and nucleotides). Bacterial inactivation efficacy (in anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR) effluent) followed the order of PFA > chlorine > PAA ≈ PPA. Fluorescence microscopic analysis indicated that free chlorine induced surface damage and cell lysis rapidly, whereas POAs led to intracellular oxidative stress through penetrating the intact cell membrane. However, POAs (50 μM) were less effective than chlorine at inactivating viruses, achieving only ∼1-log PFU removal for MS2 and Φ6 after 30 min of reaction in phosphate buffer without genome damage. Results suggest that POAs' unique interaction with bacteria and ineffective viral inactivation could be attributed to their selectivity toward cysteine and methionine through oxygen-transfer reactions and limited reactivity for other biomolecules. These mechanistic insights could inform the application of POAs in water and wastewater treatment.

Abstract
Virucidal efficacies of disinfectants are typically assessed by infectivity assay utilizing a single type of host cell. Enteroviruses infect multiple host cells via various entry routes, and each entry route may be impaired differently by a given disinfectant. Yet, it is unknown how the choice of host cells affects the observed inactivation kinetics. Here, we evaluated the inactivation kinetics of echovirus 11 (E11) by free chlorine, ultraviolet (UV) irradiation, and heat, using three different host cells (BGMK, RD, and A549). Inactivation rates were independent of the host cell for treatment of E11 by UV or heat. Conversely, E11 inactivation by free chlorine occurred 2-fold faster when enumerated on BGMK cells compared with RD and A549 cells. Host cell-dependent inactivation kinetics by free chlorine were also observed for echovirus 7, 9, and 13, and coxsackievirus A9. E11 inactivation by free chlorine was partly caused by a loss in host cell attachment, which was most pronounced for BGMK cells. BGMK cells lack the attachment receptor CD55 and a key subunit of the uncoating receptor β2M, which may contribute to the differential inactivation kinetics for this cell type. Consequently, inactivation kinetics of enteroviruses should be assessed using host cells with different receptor profiles.

Abstract
While SARS-CoV-2 is generally under control, the question of variants and infections still persists. Fundamental information on how the virus interacts with inanimate surfaces commonly found in our daily life and when in contact with the skin will be helpful in developing strategies to inhibit the spread of the virus. Here in, a critically important review of current understanding of the interaction between virus and surface is summarized from chemistry point-of-view. The Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek and extended Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek theories to model virus attachments on surfaces are introduced, along with the interaction type and strength, and quantification of each component. The virus survival and transfer are affected by a combination of biological, physical, and chemical parameters, as well as environmental parameters. The surface properties for virus and virus survival on typical surfaces such as metals, plastics, and glass are summarized. Attention is also paid to the transfer of virus to/from surfaces and skin. Typical virus disinfection strategies utilizing heat, light, chemicals, and ozone are discussed together with their disinfection mechanism. In the last section, design principles for virus repelling surface chemistry such as surperhydrophobic or surperhydrophilic surfaces are also introduced, to demonstrate how the integration of surface property control and advanced material fabrication can lead to the development of functional surfaces for mitigating the effect of viral infection upon contact.

Abstract
The occurrence of a viable but nonculturable (VBNC) state in antibiotic-resistant E. coli (AR E. coli) and inefficient degradation of their antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) may cause potential health risks during disinfection. Peracetic acid (PAA) is an alternative disinfectant for replacing chlorine-based oxidants in wastewater treatment, and the potential of PAA to induce a VBNC state in AR E. coli and to remove the transformation functionality of ARGs were investigated for the first time. Results show that PAA exhibits excellent performance in inactivating AR E. coli (over 7.0-logs) and persistently inhibiting its regeneration. After PAA disinfection, insignificant changes in the ratio of living to dead cells (∼4%) and the level of cell metabolism, indicating that AR E. coli were induced into VBNC states. Unexpectedly, PAA was found to induce AR E. coli into VBNC state by destroying the proteins containing reactive amino acids at thiol, thioether and imidazole groups, rather than the result of membrane damage, oxidative stress, lipid destruction and DNA disruption in the conventional disinfection processes. Moreover, the result of poor reactivity between PAA and plasmid strands and bases confirmed that PAA hardly reduced the abundance of ARGs and damaged the plasmid's integrity. Transformation assays and real environment validation indicated that PAA-treated AR E. coli could release large abundance of naked ARGs with high-efficiency transformation functionality (∼5.4 × 10-4 - ∼8.3 × 10-6) into the environment. This study has significant environmental implications for assessing the transmission of antimicrobial resistance during PAA disinfection.

Abstract
Feline panleukopenia (FPL) is a highly contagious acute infectious disease caused by feline parvovirus (FPV). FPV has also been found in giant pandas with clinical signs of vomiting and mild diarrhea, posing a threat to this vulnerable species. Cleaning and disinfection may be one of the most efficacious ways to prevent FPV spread in the habitat of giant pandas. This study evaluated the inactivation effect of peracetic acid (PAA), povidone-iodine (PVP-I), glutaral and deciquam solution (JM) and Virkon S. The tissue culture infective dose (TCID50) assay indicated that the virus may be totally inactivated by JM, PAA and Virkon S. Meanwhile, the hemagglutination (HA) assay showed a high inactivation efficiency of PAA and Virkon S. The analysis of Western blot revealed that PAA, Virkon S and JM can inhibit the structural protein synthesis. Taken together, our findings demonstrated that PAA could rapidly and efficiently inactivate FPV, representing an efficacious disinfectant for FPV control.

Abstract
Limosilactobacillus fermentum is a bacterium widely used in food production, medicine, and industrial fermentation. However, fermentation could fail due to phage contamination. L. fermentum bacteriophage LFP02 can be induced from L. fermentum IMAU 32579 using mitomycin C. To better understand the characteristics of this phage, its physiological and genomic characteristics were evaluated. The results showed that its optimal multiplicity of infection was 0.01, and the burst size was 148.03 ± 2.65 pfu/infective center. Compared to temperature, pH had a more obvious influence on phage viability, although its adsorption capacity was not affected by the divalent cations (Ca2+ and Mg2+) or chloramphenicol. Its genome size was 43,789 bp and the GC content was 46.06%, including 53 functional proteins. Compared to other L. fermentum phages, phage LFP02 had chromosome deletion, insertion, and inversion, which demonstrated that it was a novel phage. This study could expand the knowledge of the biological characteristics of L. fermentum bacteriophages and provide some theoretical basis for bacteriophage prevention during fermentation.

Abstract
Performic acid (PFA) has received increasing attention in water disinfection due to its high disinfection efficiency and fewer formation of disinfection by-products. However, the inactivation of fungal spores by PFA has not been investigated. In this study, the results showed that the log-linear regression plus tail model adequately described the inactivation kinetic of fungal spores with PFA. The k values of A. niger and A. flavus with PFA were 0.36 min-1 and 0.07 min-1, respectively. Compared to peracetic acid, PFA was more efficient in inactivating fungal spores and caused more serious damage on cell membrane. Compared to neutral and alkaline conditions, acidic environments demonstrated a greater inactivation efficiency for PFA. The increase of PFA dosage and temperature had a promoting effect on the inactivation efficiency of fungal spores. PFA could kill the fungal spores by damaging cell membrane and penetration of cell membranes. In real water, the inactivation efficiency declined as a result of the existence of background substances such as dissolved organic matter. Moreover, the regrowth potential of fungal spores in R2A medium were severely inhibited after inactivation. This study provides some information for PFA to control fungi pollution and explores the mechanism of PFA inactivation.

Abstract
In this study, Fe(Ⅱ)/peracetic acid (PAA) and Fe(Ⅱ)/sodium hypochlorite (NaClO) systems were applied as the combined preoxidation and coagulation process to enhance algae removal. A high removal rate of algae and turbidity could be achieved, with most algal cells keeping intact when adding reasonable concentrations of PAA and NaClO to enhance Fe(Ⅱ) coagulation. The variations of chlorophyll a, malondialdehyde, and intracellular reactive oxygen species suggested that moderate oxidation with only destroying surface-adsorbed organic matter rather than cell integrity was realized. The generated organic radicals, Fe(Ⅳ), and hydroxy radical played the major roles in the Fe(Ⅱ)/PAA system for the moderate oxidation of algal cells, but direct oxidation by NaClO rather than producing reactive species in the Fe(Ⅱ)/NaClO process contributed to the preoxidation. Concurrently, the in-situ formed Fe(Ⅲ) greatly promoted the agglomerating and settling of algae. The analysis of cell integrity, biochemical compositions, and fluorescence excitation-emission matrices spectra demonstrated that excess NaClO but not PAA would seriously damage the algal cells. This might be because that NaClO would directly oxidize the cell wall/membrane, while PAA mainly permeates into the cell to inactivate algae. These results suggest that Fe(Ⅱ)/PAA is an efficient strategy for algae-laden water treatment without serious algae lysis.

Abstract
Phage contamination is one of the significant problems in the food fermentation industry, which eventually causes economic losses to the industry. Here, we investigated the viability of Lactobacillus plantarum phage P1 and P2 using various biocides treatments (ethanol, isopropanol, sodium hypochlorite and peracetic acid). Results indicated that phage P1 and P2 could be completely inactivated by treatment with 75% ethanol for 5 min, followed by 400 ppm of sodium hypochlorite treatment for 5 min. Phage P2 could be completely inactivated in the reverse sequence, while 800 ppm of sodium hypochlorite was required to achieve a similar effect for phage P1. Moreover, 100% isopropanol could increase the inactivating effect of 75% ethanol. This study may provide basic information on using multiple antimicrobials for phage control in laboratories and food plants.

Abstract
Peracetic acid (PAA) disinfectants are effective against a wide range of pathogenic microorganisms, including bacteria, fungi, and viruses. Several studies have shown the efficacy of PAA against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2); however, its efficacy in SARS-CoV-2 variants and the molecular mechanism of action of PAA against SARS-CoV-2 have not been investigated. SARS-CoV-2 infection depends on the recognition and binding of the cell receptor angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) via the receptor-binding domain (RBD) of the spike protein. Here, we demonstrated that PAA effectively suppressed pseudotyped virus infection in the Wuhan type and variants, including Delta and Omicron. Similarly, PAA reduced the authentic viral load of SARS-CoV-2. Computational analysis suggested that the hydroxyl radicals produced by PAA cleave the disulfide bridges in the RBD. Additionally, the PAA treatment decreased the abundance of the Wuhan- and variant-type spike proteins. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay showed direct inhibition of RBD-ACE2 interactions by PAA. In conclusion, the PAA treatment suppressed SARS-CoV-2 infection, which was dependent on the inhibition of the interaction between the spike RBD and ACE2 by inducing spike protein destabilization. Our findings provide evidence of a potent disinfection strategy against SARS-CoV-2.

Abstract
Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2), the cause of the COVID-19 outbreaks, is transmitted by respiratory droplets and has become a life-threatening viral pandemic worldwide. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of different chemical (chlorine dioxide [ClO2] and peroxyacetic acid [PAA]) and physical (ultraviolet [UV]-C irradiation) inactivation methods on various food-contact surfaces (stainless steel [SS] and polypropylene [PP]) and foods (lettuce, chicken breast, and salmon) contaminated with human coronavirus 229E (HCoV-229E). Treatments with the maximum concentration of ClO2 (500 ppm) and PAA (200 ppm) for 5 min achieved >99.9% inactivation on SS and PP. At 200 ppm ClO2 for 1 min on lettuce, chicken breast, and salmon, the HCoV-229E titers were 1.19, 3.54, and 3.97 log10 TCID50/mL, respectively. Exposure (5 min) to 80 ppm PAA achieved 1.68 log10 reduction on lettuce, and 2.03 and 1.43 log10 reductions on chicken breast and salmon, respectively, treated with 1500 ppm PAA. In the carrier tests, HCoV-229E titers on food-contact surfaces were significantly decreased (p < 0.05) with increased doses of UV-C (0-60 mJ/cm2) and not detected at the maximum UV-C dose (Detection limit: 1.0 log10 TCID50/coupon). The UV-C dose of 900 mJ/cm2 proved more effective on chicken breast (>2 log10 reduction) than on lettuce and salmon (>1 log10 reduction). However, there were no quality changes (p > 0.05) in food samples after inactivation treatments except the maximum PAA concentration (5 min) and the UV-C dose (1800 mJ/cm2).

Abstract
The disinfection of pathogenic microorganisms in water treatment by peracetic acid (PAA)-based advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) has been gaining increasing concern. In this work, the inactivation mechanism, influencing factors and regrowth of two pathogenic Aspergillus species in the system of CuO-activated PAA were studied for the first time. The k values of A. niger and A. flavus inactivated by PAA/CuO system were 3.9 and 2.1-fold higher than those inactivated by PAA alone. PAA concentration and CuO dose were positively correlated with the inactivation efficiency, while humic acid and pH were negatively correlated. The main active species that contributed to the inactivation of fungal spores in PAA/CuO system were •OH, CH3C(O)OO• and 1O2. PAA/CuO system had more intense oxidative stimulation and more serious damage to fungal spores according to the analysis of cell membrane integrity and intracellular ROS levels. In addition, the PAA/CuO system was less impacted by the water matrix and kept a good inactivation efficiency in real water samples. The regrowth potential of fungal spores after disinfection was also reduced in PAA/CuO system so as to avoid the risk of biological regrowth. This study provides a feasible PAA-based advanced oxidation method for activating PAA and inactivating fungal spores.

Abstract
To prevent the spread of SARS-CoV-2 in cold-chain transportation in China, we developed specific cryogenic disinfectants. Carrier tests were performed against SARS-CoV-2 at - 20 °C for the four cryogenic disinfectants developed and qRT-PCR was used to test the virus RNA. Peracetic acid, chlorine disinfectants (two different concentrations), and quaternary ammonium disinfectant with their antifreeze can all inactivate SARS-CoV-2 in 5 min at - 20 °C. However, after 2-3 h of exposure, only chlorine disinfectant could destroy SARS-CoV-2 RNA. The viruses treated with peracetic acid and quaternary disinfectants showed positive Ct values even after 3 h detected with qRT-PCR. The conclusion was that the cold-chain disinfectants we tested could inactivate SARS-CoV-2 quickly and effectively, but only chlorine disinfectants could destroy nucleic acids in 3 h. Our study also illustrated that using qRT-PCR detection of viral nucleic acids to assess disinfection was inappropriate.
