Catalytic Membrane with Copper Single-Atom Catalysts for Effective Hydrogen Peroxide Activation and Pollutant Destruction

Cobalt single-atom catalyst tailored ceramic membrane for selective removal of emerging organic contaminants

Water reuse is an effective way to solve the issues of current wastewater increments and water resource scarcity. Ultrafiltration, a promising method for water reuse, has the characteristics of low energy consumption, easy operation, and high adaptability to coupling with other water treatment processes. However, emerging organic contaminants (EOCs) in municipal wastewater cannot be effectively intercepted by ultrafiltration, which poses significant challenges to the effluent quality and sustainability of ultrafiltration process. Here, we develop a cobalt single-atom catalyst-tailored ceramic membrane (Co1-NCNT-CM) in conjunction with an activated peroxymonosulfate (PMS) system, achieving excellent EOCs degradation and anti-fouling performance. An interfacial reaction mechanism effectively mitigates membrane fouling through a repulsive interaction with natural organic matter. The generation of singlet oxygen at the Co-N3-C active sites through a catalytic pathway (PMS→PMS∗→OH∗→O∗→OO∗→1O2) exhibits selective oxidation of phenols and sulfonamides, achieving >90% removal rates. Our findings elucidate a multi-layered functional architecture within the Co1-NCNT-CM/PMS system, responsible for its superior performance in organic decontamination and membrane maintenance during secondary effluent treatment. It highlights the power of integrating Co1-NCNT-CM/PMS systems in advanced wastewater treatment frameworks, specifically for targeted EOCs removal, heralding a new direction for sustainable water management.

External redox couple enhanced anammox sludge activity at low temperature: Insight into intracellular resource synthesis

Anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox), an energy-efficient deamination biotechnology, faces operational challenges in low-temperature environments. Enhancing the metabolic activity of anammox bacteria (AnAOB) is pivotal for advancing its application in mainstream municipal wastewater treatment. Inspired by the metabolic adaptability of AnAOB and based on our previous findings, this work investigated the enhancement of intracellular ATP and NADH synthesis through the exogenous supply of reduced humic acid (HAred) and H2O2 redox couple, aiming to augment AnAOB activity under low-temperature conditions. Our experimental setup involved continuous dosing of 0.0067 μmol g-1 volatile suspended solid of H2O2 and 10 mg g-1 volatile suspended solid of HAred into a mainstream anammox reactor operated at 15 °C with an influent TN content of 60 mg/L. The results showed that HAred / H2O2 couple succeeded in maintaining the effluent TN at 10.72 ± 0.91 mg l-1. The specific anammox activity, ATP and NADH synthesis levels of sludge increased by 1.34, 2.33 and 6.50 folds, respectively, over the control setup devoid of the redox couple. High-throughput sequencing analysis revealed that the relative abundance of Candidatus Kuenenia after adding HAred / H2O2 couple reached 3.65 % at the end of operation, which was 5.14 folds higher than that of the control group. Further metabolomics analysis underscored an activation in the metabolism of amino acids, nucleotides, and phospholipids, which collectively enhanced the availability of ATP and NADH for the respiratory processes. These findings may provide guidance on strategy development for improving the electron transfer efficiency of AnAOB and underscore the potential of using redox couples to promote the mainstream application of anammox technology.

Electrochemical filtration for drinking water purification: A review on membrane materials, mechanisms and roles

Electrochemical filtration can not only enrich low concentrations of pollutants but also produce reactive oxygen species to interact with toxic pollutants with the assistance of a power supply, making it an effective strategy for drinking water purification. In addition, the application of electrochemical filtration facilitates the reduction of pretreatment procedures and the use of chemicals, which has outstanding potential for maximizing process simplicity and reducing operating costs, enabling the production of safe drinking water in smaller installations. In recent years, the research on electrochemical filtration has gradually increased, but there has been a lack of attention on its application in the removal of low concentrations of pollutants from low conductivity water. In this review, membrane substrates and electrocatalysts used to improve the performance of electrochemical membranes are briefly summarized. Meanwhile, the application prospects of emerging single-atom catalysts in electrochemical filtration are also presented. Thereafter, several electrochemical advanced oxidation processes coupled with membrane filtration are described, and the related working mechanisms and their advantages and shortcomings used in drinking water purification are illustrated. Finally, the roles of electrochemical filtration in drinking water purification are presented, and the main problems and future perspectives of electrochemical filtration in the removal of low concentration pollutants are discussed.

Emerging single-atom catalysts in the detection and purification of contaminated gases

Single atom catalysts (SACs) show exceptional molecular adsorption and electron transfer capabilities owing to their remarkable atomic efficiency and tunable electronic structure, thereby providing promising solutions for diverse important processes including photocatalysis, electrocatalysis, thermal catalysis, etc. Consequently, SACs hold great potential in the detection and degradation of pollutants present in contaminated gases. Over the past few years, SACs have made remarkable achievements in the field of contaminated gas detection and purification. In this review, we first provide a concise introduction to the significance and urgency of gas detection and pollutant purification, followed by a comprehensive overview of the structural feature identification methods for SACs. Subsequently, we systematically summarize the three key properties of SACs for detecting contaminated gases and discuss the research progress made in utilizing SACs to purify polluted gases. Finally, we analyze the enhancement mechanism and advantages of SACs in polluted gas detection and purification, and propose strategies to address challenges and expedite the development of SACs in polluted gas detection and purification.

Exploring the Roles of Single Atom in Hydrogen Peroxide Photosynthesis

This comprehensive review provides a deep exploration of the unique roles of single atom catalysts (SACs) in photocatalytic hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) production. SACs offer multiple benefits over traditional catalysts such as improved efficiency, selectivity, and flexibility due to their distinct electronic structure and unique properties. The review discusses the critical elements in the design of SACs, including the choice of metal atom, host material, and coordination environment, and how these elements impact the catalytic activity. The role of single atoms in photocatalytic H2O2 production is also analysed, focusing on enhancing light absorption and charge generation, improving the migration and separation of charge carriers, and lowering the energy barrier of adsorption and activation of reactants. Despite these advantages, several challenges, including H2O2 decomposition, stability of SACs, unclear mechanism, and low selectivity, need to be overcome. Looking towards the future, the review suggests promising research directions such as direct utilization of H2O2, high-throughput synthesis and screening, the creation of dual active sites, and employing density functional theory for investigating the mechanisms of SACs in H2O2 photosynthesis. This review provides valuable insights into the potential of single atom catalysts for advancing the field of photocatalytic H2O2 production.

Mechanistic insight into single-atom Fe loaded catalytic membrane with peracetic acid and visible light activation

Advanced oxidation is an effective method for removing hard-to-degrade organic pollutants from water. In this paper, a novel structure of a single atom Fe anchored g-C3N4 (FeCN) membrane was proposed to remove pollutants from water by coupling membrane technology with photocatalytic and peroxyacetic acid oxidation. The presence of zero-dimensional Fe atoms in FeCN membranes allows for the removal of acetaminophen (APAP) in mobile membrane filtration systems without compromising permeation performance by simultaneously possessing visible photocatalytic capability and peroxyacetic acid (PAA) activation. Existence of inter-membrane domain-limiting conditions led to 100 % degradation of APAP within 10.5 ms, which is 5 orders of magnitude faster than conventional catalytic systems. Notably, photo-generated electrons/holes generated by light and HClO generated by Cl- promote the conversion of Fe(V) and the removal of pollutants during the catalytic process. The spatial separation ability of the membrane catalytic layer surface mitigates the catalyst's passivation by macromolecular organics. Furthermore, surface photocatalysis of the membrane and interlayer catalysis generated by PAA mitigate the surface and interlayer pollutants of the membrane, respectively. This study explores a novel approach for the development of highly efficient atom-catalyzed membrane systems with multiple purposes.

Multi-pathway on peroxymonosulfate activation by single cobalt atoms incorporated on CuO with enriched oxygen vacancies for high-efficient oxidation of tetracycline

The development of single atom catalysts (SACs) with superior catalytic performance is a long-term goal for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation in advanced oxidation processes (AOPs). A novel SACs that single Co atoms anchored on CuO with enriched oxygen vacancies (Ov) is synthesized successfully by choosing a metal oxide as the carrier creatively. 100% of tetracycline (TC) can be removed by Co-CuO (Ov)/PMS system within 3 min. The corresponding reaction rate constant is 3.1068 min-1, which is much higher than that of CuO (Ov), ZIF-CoN4-C, Co-CuO (without Ov) and CoNP-CuO (Ov), respectively. Co(II) is the primary source of radical pathway (·OH and SO4·-), and its regeneration is promoted by Cu(Ⅰ). The enriched Ov is the major contribution to the nonradical pathway, which promotes the singlet oxygen (1O2) generation together with accelerates the electron transfer from TC to catalyst-PMS*. Besides, the Co-CuO (Ov) exhibits an excellent stability and anti-interference capability. This study highlights a novel strategy to promote PMS activation by incorporating the single metal atoms on a metal oxide carrier with defects to accelerate the redox of dominate metal and stabilize the metal atoms simultaneously, which may inform the design for the next generation of SACs in AOPs.

Robust self-cleaning membrane with superhydrophilicity and underwater superoleophobicity for oil-in-water separation

The discharge of oily wastewater has increased dramatically and will bring serious environmental problems. In this work, a self-cleaning and anti-fouling g-C₃N₄/TiO₂/PVDF composite membrane was fabricated via the layer-by-layer approach. The surface of as-prepared composite membrane displayed a superhydrophilic and underwater superoleophobic behavior under irradiation with visible light. Also, upon irradiation with visible light, the fabricated g-C₃N₄/TiO₂/PVDF composite membrane displayed enhanced permeation flux and improved oil removal efficiency as a result of the generation of hydroxyl free radicals during the photocatalytic filtration process. Significantly, irradiation with visible light remarkably improved reusability of the composite membrane by initiating photocatalytic decomposition of deposited oil foulants, which enabled removal of over 99.75% of oils, thus reaching a nearly 100% flux recovery ratio. Furthermore, the g-C₃N₄/TiO₂/PVDF composite membrane exhibited great anti-fouling behavior in photocatalysis-assisted filtration. The mechanistic study revealed that underwater superhydrophobicity and the generation of free hydroxyl radicals jointly contributed to membrane anti-fouling. The greatest advantages of this g-C₃N₄/TiO₂/PVDF composite membrane are that not only does it degrades the oil pollutants, but it also makes the membrane less vulnerable to fouling.

Gravity-driven rattan-based catalytic filter for rapid and highly efficient organic pollutant removal

Metal organic frameworks hold great promise as heterogeneous catalysts in sulfate radical (SO₄^∙-) based advanced oxidation. However, the aggregation of powdered MOF crystals and the complicated recovery procedure largely hinder their large-scale practical applications. It is important to develop eco-friendly and adaptable substrate-immobilized metal organic frameworks. Based on the hierarchical pore structure of the rattan, gravity-driven metal organic frameworks loaded rattan-based catalytic filter was designed to degrade organic pollutants by activating PMS at high liquid fluxes. Inspired by the water transportation of rattan, ZIF-67 was in-situ grown uniformly on the rattan channels inner surface using the continuous flow method. The intrinsically aligned microchannels in the vascular bundles of rattan acted as reaction compartments for the immobilization and stabilization of ZIF-67. Furthermore, the rattan-based catalytic filter exhibited excellent gravity-driven catalytic activity (up to 100 % treatment efficiency for a water flux of 10173.6 L·m^-2·h^-1), recyclability, and stability of organic pollutant degradation. After ten cycles, the TOC removal of ZIF-67@rattan was 69.34 %, maintaining a stable mineralisation capacity for pollutants. The inhibitory effect of the micro-channel promoted the interaction between active groups and contaminants, increasing the degradation efficiency and improving the stability of the composite. The design of a gravity-driven rattan-based catalytic filter for wastewater treatment provides an effective strategy for developing renewable and continuous catalytic systems.

A passive-active combined strategy for ultrafiltration membrane fouling control in continuous oily wastewater purification

Membrane-based technology has been confirmed as an effective way to treat emulsified oily wastewater, however, membrane fouling is still one of practical challenges in long-term operation. Herein, a novel passive-active combined strategy was proposed to control membrane fouling in continuous oily wastewater purification, where the δ-MnO₂ decoration layer helped to reduce the total fouling ratio (passive strategy for fouling mitigation) and the catalytic cleaning effectively removed the irreversible oil fouling (active strategy for fouling removal). The functional membrane was prepared via in-situ modification, referred to as δ-MnO₂@TA-PES. The morphology, crystalline phase, chemical structure and surface properties of the membranes were systematically characterized. Compared with PES, the δ-MnO₂@TA-PES possessed superhydrophilicity, enhanced electronegativity and narrowed pore size. The δ-MnO₂@TA-PES achieved high water permeation flux of 723.9 L·m ^- 2·h ^- 1·bar^-1, excellent oil rejection with separation efficiency above 98.5% for various emulsions, and durable anti-oil-fouling performance with FRR_b of 98.0%. Notably, the oil cake layer fouling on δ-MnO₂@TA-PES was greatly alleviated owing to its enhanced surface properties. In addition, δ-MnO₂@TA-PES showed high cleaning efficiency in the peroxymonosulfate (PMS) cleaning process, where the radical and nonradical pathways occurred simultaneously. And the active substances generated in the nonradical process (especially ¹O₂) were considered as the main contributor to the reduction of irreversible fouling. Overall, the novel strategy of fouling control ensured the efficient operation of ultrafiltration membranes for the continuous oily wastewater purification.
