Effective Toluene Ozonation over δ-MnO2: Oxygen Vacancy-Induced Reactive Oxygen Species

Oxygen vacancy-mediated Mn2O3 catalyst with high efficiency and stability for toluene oxidation

Oxygen vacancy engineering in transition metal oxides is an effective strategy for improving catalytic performance. Herein, defect-enriched Mn2O3 catalysts were constructed by controlling the calcination temperature. The high content of oxygen vacancies and accompanying Mn4+ ions were generated in Mn2O3 catalysts calcined at low temperature, which could greatly improve the low-temperature reducibility and migration of surface oxygen species. DFT theoretical calculations further confirmed that molecular oxygen and toluene were easily adsorbed over defective α-Mn2O3 (222) facets with an energy of -0.29 and -0.48 eV, respectively, and corresponding OO bond length is stretched to 1.43 Å, resulting in the highly reactive oxygen species. Mn2O3-300 catalyst with abundant oxygen vacancies exhibited the highest specific reaction rate and lowest activation energy. Furthermore, the optimized catalyst possessed the outstanding stability, water tolerance and CO2 yield. In comparison with the fresh Mn2O3-300 catalyst, the physical structure and surface property of the used catalyst remained almost unchanged regardless of whether undergoing the stability test at consecutive catalytic runs as well as high temperature, and water resistance test. In situ DRIFTS spectra further elucidated that introducing the water vapor had little effect on the reaction intermediates, indicating the excellent durability of the defect-enriched catalyst.

Enhanced Photocatalytic Ozonation Using Modified TiO2 With Designed Nucleophilic and Electrophilic Sites

Photocatalytic ozonation is considered to be a promising approach for the treatment of refractory organic pollutants, but the design of efficient catalyst remains a challenge. Surface modification provides a potential strategy to improve the activity of photocatalytic ozonation. In this work, density functional theory (DFT) calculations were first performed to check the interaction between O3 and TiO2-OH (surface hydroxylated TiO2) or TiO2-F (surface fluorinated TiO2), and the results suggest that TiO2-OH displays better O3 adsorption and activation than does TiO2-F, which is confirmed by experimental results. The surface hydroxyl groups greatly promote the O3 activation, which is beneficial for the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Importantly, TiO2-OH displays better performance towards pollutants (such as berberine hydrochloride) removal than does TiO2-F and most reported ozonation photocatalysts. The total organic carbon (TOC) removal efficiency reaches 84.4 % within two hours. This work highlights the effect of surface hydroxylation on photocatalytic ozonation and provides ideas for the design of efficient photocatalytic ozonation catalysts.

Crystal phase-driven performance of MnO2 in aqueous phase low-temperature thermal catalysis: Synergistic interactions between Mn3+ and surface lattice oxygen

Catalytic oxidation at mild conditions is crucial for mitigating the high pressure and high temperature challenges associated with current catalytic wet air oxidation (CWAO) technologies in wastewater treatment. Among potential materials for catalytic oxidation reactions, polycrystalline MnO2 existed in natural minerals holds considerable promise. However, the relationships between different crystal phases of MnO2 and their catalytic activity sources in aqueous phase remain uncertain and subject to debate. In this research, we synthesized various MnO2 crystal phases, comprising α-, β-, δ-, γ-, ε-, and λ-MnO2, and assessed their catalytic oxidation efficiency during low-temperature heating for treatment of organic pollutants. Our findings demonstrate that λ-MnO2 exhibits the highest catalytic activity, followed by δ-MnO2, γ-MnO2, α-MnO2, ε-MnO2, and β-MnO2. The variations in catalytic activity among different MnO2 are attributed to variances in their oxygen vacancy abundance and redox activity. Furthermore, we identified the primary active species, which include Mn3+ and superoxide radicals (•O2-) generated by surface lattice oxygen of MnO2. This research highlights the critical role of crystal phases in influencing oxygen vacancy content, redox activity, and overall catalytic performance, providing valuable insights for the rational design of MnO2 catalysts tailored for effective organic pollutant degradation in CWAO applications.

Transforming Plain LaMnO3 Perovskite into a Powerful Ozonation Catalyst: Elucidating the Mechanisms of Simultaneous A and B Sites Modulation for Enhanced Toluene Degradation

Herein, we propose preferential dissolution paired with Cu-doping as an effective method for synergistically modulating the A- and B-sites of LaMnO3 perovskite. Through Cu-doping into the B-sites of LaMnO3, specifically modifying the B-sites, the double perovskite La2CuMnO6 was created. Subsequently, partial La from the A-sites of La2CuMnO6 was etched using HNO3, forming novel La2CuMnO6/MnO2 (LCMO/MnO2) catalysts. The optimized catalyst, featuring an ideal Mn:Cu ratio of 4.5:1 (LCMO/MnO2-4.5), exhibited exceptional catalytic ozonation performance. It achieved approximately 90% toluene degradation with 56% selectivity toward CO2, even under ambient temperature (35 °C) and a relatively humid environment (45%). Modulation of A-sites induced the elongation of Mn-O bonds and decrease in the coordination number of Mn-O (from 6 to 4.3) in LCMO/MnO2-4.5, resulting in the creation of abundant multivalent Mn and oxygen vacancies. Doping Cu into B-sites led to the preferential chemisorption of toluene on multivalent Cu (Cu(I)/Cu(II)), consistent with theoretical predictions. Effective electronic supplementary interactions enabled the cycling of multiple oxidation states of Mn for ozone decomposition, facilitating the production of reactive oxygen species and the regeneration of oxygen vacancies. This study establishes high-performance perovskites for the synergistic regulation of O3 and toluene, contributing to cleaner and safer industrial activities.

Unveiling the activity difference cause and ring-opening reaction routes of typical radicals induced degradation of toluene

This study employs five UV-AOPs (PMS, PDS, H2O2, NaClO and NaClO2) to produce radicals (•OH, SO4•-, ClO•, O2•- and 1O2) and further comparatively studies their activity sequence and activity difference cause in toluene degradation. The toluene mineralization efficiency as a descending order is 73 % (UV-PMS) > 71 % (UV-PDS) > 70 % (acidified-UV-NaClO) > 55 % (UV-H2O2) > 36 % (UV-NaClO) > 35 % (UV-NaClO2); that of conversion efficiency is 99 % (acidified-UV-NaClO) > 95 % (UV-PMS) > 90 % (UV-PDS) > 74 % (UV-H2O2) > 44 % (UV-NaClO) > 41 % (UV-NaClO2). Acidic pretreatment significantly boosts the reactivity of UV-NaClO. ESR combined with radical quenching tests reveals the radicals' generation and evolution, and their contribution rates to toluene conversion, i.e. ClO• > SO4•- > O2•- > 1O2 > •OH. Theoretical calculations further unveil the ring-opening reaction routes and the nature of the activity difference of different radicals. The minimum energy required for ring-opening reaction is 116.77, 150.63, 168.29 and 191.92 kJ/mol with respect to ClO•, SO4•-, 1O2 and •OH, and finding that the ClO•-HO• pair is the best for toluene mineralization. The difficulty for eliminating typical VOCs by using UV-AOPs method is determined as toluene > chlorobenzene > benzene > ethyl acetate.

Ultrasound-driven radical chain reaction and immunoregulation of piezoelectric-based hybrid coating for treating implant infection

The poor efficiency of US-responsive coatings on implants restricts their practical application. Immunotherapy that stimulates immune cells to enhance their antibacterial activity is expected to synergize with sonodynamic therapy for treating implant infection effectively and safely. Herein, US-responsive hybrid coatings composed of the oxygen-deficient BaTiO3 nanorod arrays and l-arginine (BaTiO3-x/LA) are designed and prepared on titanium implants for sonocatalytic therapy-cooperated immunotherapy to treat Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infection. BaTiO3-x/LA can generate more oxidizing reactive oxygen species (ROS, hydroxyl radical (·OH)) and reactive nitrogen species (RNS, peroxynitrite anion (ONOO-)). The construction of nanorod arrays and oxygen defects balances the piezoelectric properties and sonocatalytic capability during US treatment. The generated piezoelectric electric field provides a sufficient driving force to separate electrons and holes, and the oxygen defects attenuate the electron-hole recombination efficiency, consequently increasing the yield of ROS during the US treatment. Moreover, nitric oxide (NO) released by l-arginine reacts with the superoxide radical (·O2-) to produce ONOO-. Since, this radical chain reaction improves the oxidizing ability between bacteria and radicals, the cell membrane (argB, secA2) and DNA (dnaBGXN) are destroyed. The bacterial self-repair mechanism indirectly accelerates bacterial death based on the transcriptome analysis. In addition to participating in the radical chain reaction, NO positively affects macrophage M1 polarization to yield potent phagocytosis to MRSA. As a result, without introducing an extra sonosensitizer, BaTiO3-x/LA exhibits excellent antibacterial activity against MRSA after the US treatment for 15 min. Furthermore, BaTiO3-x/LA facilitates macrophage M2 polarization after implantation and improves osteogenic differentiation. The combined effects of sonodynamic therapy and immunoregulation lead to an effective and safe treatment method for implant-associated infections.

In-Depth Understanding of the Oxidative Compatibility of Volatile Organic Compounds with Mn2O3 and Pt-Loaded Catalysts

Designing suitable catalysts for efficiently degrading volatile organic compounds (VOCs) is a great challenge due to the distinct variety and nature of VOCs. Herein, the suitability of different typical VOCs (toluene and acetone) over Pt-based catalysts and Mn2O3 was investigated carefully. The activity of Mn2O3 was inferior to Pt-loaded catalysts in toluene oxidation but showed superior ability for destroying acetone, while Pt loading could boost the catalytic activity of Mn2O3 for both acetone and toluene. This suitability could be determined by the physicochemical properties of the catalysts and the structure of the VOC since toluene destruction activity is highly reliant on Pt0 in the metallic state and linearly correlated with the amount of surface reactive oxygen species (Oads), while the crucial factor that affects acetone oxidation is the mobility of lattice oxygen (Olat). The Pt/Mn2O3 catalyst shows highly active Pt-O-Mn interfacial sites, favoring the generation of Oads and promoting Mn-Olat mobility, leading to its excellent performance. Therefore, the design of abundant active sites is an effective means of developing highly adaptive catalysts for the oxidation of different VOCs.

Highly Dispersed Ni Atoms and O3 Promote Room-Temperature Catalytic Oxidation

Transition metal oxides are promising catalysts for catalytic oxidation reactions but are hampered by low room-temperature activities. Such low activities are normally caused by sparse reactive sites and insufficient capacity for molecular oxygen (O2) activation. Here, we present a dual-stimulation strategy to tackle these two issues. Specifically, we import highly dispersed nickel (Ni) atoms onto MnO2 to enrich its oxygen vacancies (reactive sites). Then, we use molecular ozone (O3) with a lower activation energy as an oxidant instead of molecular O2. With such dual stimulations, the constructed O3-Ni/MnO2 catalytic system shows boosted room-temperature activity for toluene oxidation with a toluene conversion of up to 98%, compared with the O3-MnO2 (Ni-free) system with only 50% conversion and the inactive O2-Ni/MnO2 (O3-free) system. This leap realizes efficient room-temperature catalytic oxidation of transition metal oxides, which is constantly pursued but has always been difficult to truly achieve.

Synergetic Manipulation Mechanism of Single-Atom M-N4 and M-OH (M = Mn, Fe, Co, Ni) Sites for Ozone Activation: Theoretical Prediction and Experimental Verification

Carbon-based single-atom catalysts (SACs) have been gradually introduced in heterogeneous catalytic ozonation (HCO), but the interface mechanism of O3 activation on the catalyst surface is still ambiguous, especially the effect of a surface hydroxyl group (M-OH) at metal sites. Herein, we combined theoretical calculations with experimental verifications to comprehensively investigate the O3 activation mechanisms on a series of conventional SAC structures with N-doped nanocarbon substrates (MN4-NCs, where M = Mn, Fe, Co, Ni). The synergetic manipulation effect of the metal atom and M-OH on O3 activation pathways was paid particular attention. O3 tends to directly interact with the metal atom on MnN4-NC, FeN4-NC, and NiN4-NC catalysts, among which MnN4-NC has the best catalytic activity for its relatively lower activation energy barrier of O3 (0.62 eV) and more active surface-adsorbed oxygen species (Oads). On the CoN4-NC catalyst, direct interaction of O3 with the metal site is energetically infeasible, but O3 can be activated to generate Oads or HO2 species from direct or indirect participation of M-OH sites. The experimental results showed that 90.7 and 82.3% of total organic carbon (TOC) was removed within 40 min during catalytic ozonation of p-hydroxybenzoic acid with MnN4-NC and CoN4-NC catalysts, respectively. Phosphate quenching, catalyst characterization, and EPR measurement further supported the theoretical prediction. This contribution provides fundamental insights into the O3 activation mechanism on SACs, and the methods and ideals could be helpful for future studies of environmental catalysis.

Monolithic Catalyst of Ni Foam-Supported MnOx for Boosting Magnetocaloric Oxidation of Toluene

Catalytic oxidation has been considered an effective technique for volatile organic compound degradation. Development of metal foam-based monolithic catalysts coupling electromagnetic induction heating (EMIH) with efficiency and low energy is critical yet challenging in industrial applications. Herein, a Mn18.2-NF monolithic catalyst prepared by electrodeposition exhibited superior toluene catalytic activity under EMIH conditions, and the temperature of 90% toluene conversion decreased by 89 °C compared to that in resistance furnace heating. Relevant characterizations proved that the skin effect induced by EMIH encouraged activation of gaseous oxygen, leading to superior low-temperature redox properties of Mn18.2-NF under the EMIH condition. In situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy results showed that skin effect-induced activation of oxidizing species further accelerated the conversion of intermediates. As a result, the Mn18.2-NF monolithic catalyst under EMIH demonstrated remarkable performance for the toluene oxidation, surpassing the conventional nonprecious metal catalyst and other reported monolithic catalysts.

Engineering the Crystal Facet of Monoclinic NiO for Efficient Catalytic Ozonation of Toluene

Modulating oxygen vacancies of catalysts through crystal facet engineering is an innovative strategy for boosting the activity for ozonation of catalytic volatile organic compounds (VOCs). In this work, three kinds of facet-engineered monoclinic NiO catalysts were successfully prepared and utilized for catalytic toluene ozonation (CTO). Density functional theory calculations revealed that Ni vacancies were more likely to form preferentially than O vacancies on the (110), (100), and (111) facets of monoclinic NiO due to the stronger Ni-vacancy formation ability, further affecting O-vacancy formation. Extensive characterizations demonstrated that Ni vacancies significantly promoted the formation of O vacancies and thus reactive oxygen species in the (111) facet of monoclinic NiO, among the three facets. The performance evaluation showed that the monoclinic NiO catalyst with a dominant (111) facet exhibits excellent performance for CTO, achieving a toluene conversion of ∼100% at 30 °C after reaction for 120 min under 30 ppm toluene, 210 ppm ozone, 45% relative humidity, and a space velocity of 120 000 h-1. This outperformed the previously reported noble/non-noble metal oxide catalysts used for CTO at room temperature. This study provided novel insight into the development of highly efficient facet-engineered catalysts for the elimination of catalytic VOCs.

Size Effect of Platinum Nanoparticles over Platinum-Manganese Oxide on the Low-Temperature Oxidation of Toluene

The effect of size of Pt nanoparticles has an important influence on the performance of supported Pt-based catalysts for the elimination of toluene. Herein, uniform Pt nanoparticles with average sizes of 1.5, 2.0, 2.5, 2.9, and 3.6 nm were obtained and supported on manganese oxide octahedral molecular sieves (OMS-2), and their catalytic performances for toluene oxidation were evaluated. Benefiting from the moderate interfacial interaction between nanoparticles and manganese oxide support, Pt/OMS-2-3 with the Pt particle size of 3.0 nm showed the best catalytic performance owing to the highest content of Pt2+ species. It also facilitates the formation of more abundant Mnδ+ (Mn2+ and Mn3+) and oxygen vacancies than that of the other sizes of the OMS-2-supported Pt nanoparticles, which can be filled by a large amount of adsorbed oxygen and converted into reactive oxygen species. We further showed that the resulting surface synergetic oxygen vacancies (Pt2+-Ov-Mnδ+) play a decisive part in catalyzing the complete oxidation of toluene. The result will provide new insights for designing efficient Pt-based catalysts for deep purification of toluene.

Electrochemical CNT filter functionalized with metal-organic framework for one-step antimonite decontamination

Currently, there is a lack of advanced nanotechnology designed to efficiently remove antimony (Sb) from contaminated water systems. Sb most commonly appears as antimonite (Sb(III)) or as the anion antimonate (Sb(V)). Sb(III) is approximately ten times more toxic than Sb(V), and Sb(III) is also harder to eliminate because of its motility and charge neutrality. The work presented here developed an electrochemical filtration technology for the direct elimination of Sb(III) from contaminated water. The primary components of the filtration system are an electroactive carbon nanotube (CNT) membrane that are functionalized with the Sb-specific UiO-66(Zr), an organometallic framework. In an electric field, the UiO-66(Zr)/CNT nanohybrid filter enabled in situ transformation of Sb(III) to less harmful Sb(V). The Sb(V) was then effectively adsorbed by the UiO-66(Zr). The removal efficiency (90.5%) and rate constant (k₁ = 0.0272 min^-1) toward Sb(III) removal was 1.3 and 1.4 times greater than that of CNT filter. The filter's abundance of available adsorption sites, flow-through construction, and electrochemical activity combined to rapidly remove Sb(III) from water. The underlying functioning of the nanohybrid filter was determined with a series of process experiments and structural characterizations. The filter was effective over a broad range of pH values and in a variety of complex aqueous environments. Once loaded with Sb, the UiO-66(Zr)/CNT filter could be washed with a dilute NaOH solution to efficiently refresh its activity. The results of this work offer a direct, efficient strategy that integrates nanotechnology, electrochemistry, and membrane separation to remove antimony and potentially other heavy metals from contaminated water.
