Impact of Redox Reactions on Colloid Transport in Saturated Porous Media: An Example of Ferrihydrite Colloids Transport in the Presence of Sulfide

Facilitated transport of ferrihydrite with phosphate under saturated flow conditions

With increasing phosphate (P) entering the environment during agricultural application, the subsurface flow of particular P has been recently discussed as a vital P transport pathway. Iron (oxyhydr)oxide colloid-facilitated P transport is critical for iron and P biogeochemical processes in the subsurface. This study investigated the ferrihydrite colloid-facilitated P transport through adsorption and column experiments under different P concentrations and three pH conditions. Increased P loading on ferrihydrite colloids decreased the transport of ferrihydrite colloids (< 8.0%) under acid conditions through pore straining and irreversible attachment. Under neutral and alkaline conditions, ferrihydrite colloids exhibited more negative surfaces and smaller diameters with increasing P, which further enhanced ferrihydrite colloid transport (maximum to 95.6%). Ferrihydrite colloid-facilitated P transport was limited under acid conditions, and it was 10% - 57% enhancement under neutral and alkaline conditions with increasing P adsorption. Under neutral conditions, ferrihydrite colloid-facilitated P transport was strongest (maximum to 68.84%) because of its stronger ferrihydrite colloid transport than under acid conditions and larger P adsorption capacity than under alkaline conditions. Our findings indicate that the facilitated transport of ferrihydrite colloids in the presence of P may be appreciable in iron and phosphate-rich soil and subsurface systems, which is essential for evaluating the fate of iron and iron-facilitated P and potential environmental risks of P transport in the subsurface.

A Critical Look at Colloid Generation, Stability, and Transport in Redox-Dynamic Environments: Challenges and Perspectives

Colloid generation, stability, and transport are important processes that can significantly influence the fate and transport of nutrients and contaminants in environmental systems. Here, we critically review the existing literature on colloids in redox-dynamic environments and summarize the current state of knowledge regarding the mechanisms of colloid generation and the chemical controls over colloidal behavior in such environments. We also identify critical gaps, such as the lack of universally accepted cross-discipline definition and modeling infrastructure that hamper an in-depth understanding of colloid generation, behavior, and transport potential. We propose to go beyond a size-based operational definition of colloids and consider the functional differences between colloids and dissolved species. We argue that to predict colloidal transport in redox-dynamic environments, more empirical data are needed to parametrize and validate models. We propose that colloids are critical components of element budgets in redox-dynamic systems and must urgently be considered in field as well as lab experiments and reactive transport models. We intend to bring further clarity and openness in reporting colloidal measurements and fate to improve consistency. Additionally, we suggest a methodological toolbox for examining impacts of redox dynamics on colloids in field and lab experiments.

A Critical Review of Groundwater Table Fluctuation: Formation, Effects on Multifields, and Contaminant Behaviors in a Soil and Aquifer System

The groundwater table fluctuation (GTF) zone is an important medium for the hydrologic cycle between unsaturated soil and saturated aquifers, which accelerates the migration, transformation, and redistribution of contaminants and further poses a potential environmental risk to humans. In this review, we clarify the key processes in the generation of the GTF zone and examine its links with the variation of the hydrodynamic and hydrochemistry field, colloid mobilization, and contaminant migration and transformation. Driven by groundwater recharge and discharge, GTF regulates water flow and the movement of the capillary fringe, which further control the advection and dispersion of contaminants in soil and groundwater. In addition, the formation and variation of the reactive oxygen species (ROS) waterfall are impacted by GTF. The changing ROS components partially determine the characteristic transformation of solutes and the dynamic redistribution of the microbial population. GTF facilitates the migration and transformation of contaminants (such as nitrogen, heavy metals, non-aqueous phase liquids, and volatile organic compounds) through colloid mobilization, the co-migration effect, and variation of the hydrodynamic and hydrochemistry fields. In conclusion, this review illustrates the limitations of the current literature on GTF, and the significance of GTF zones in the underground environment is underscored by expounding on the future directions and prospects.

Structure and composition of natural ferrihydrite nano-colloids in anoxic groundwater

Fe-rich mobile colloids play vital yet poorly understood roles in the biogeochemical cycling of Fe in groundwater by influencing organic matter (OM) preservation and fluxes of Fe, OM, and other essential (micro-)nutrients. Yet, few studies have provided molecular detail on the structures and compositions of Fe-rich mobile colloids and factors controlling their persistence in natural groundwater. Here, we provide comprehensive new information on the sizes, molecular structures, and compositions of Fe-rich mobile colloids that accounted for up to 72% of aqueous Fe in anoxic groundwater from a redox-active floodplain. The mobile colloids are multi-phase assemblages consisting of Si-coated ferrihydrite nanoparticles and Fe(II)-OM complexes. Ferrihydrite nanoparticles persisted under both oxic and anoxic conditions, which we attribute to passivation by Si and OM. These findings suggest that mobile Fe-rich colloids generated in floodplains can persist during transport through redox-variable soils and could be discharged to surface waters. These results shed new light on their potential to transport Fe, OM, and nutrients across terrestrial-aquatic interfaces.

Phosphorus-Enhanced and Calcium-Retarded Transport of Ferrihydrite Colloid: Mechanism of Electrostatic Potential Changes Regulated via Adsorption Speciation

The transport of ferrihydrite colloid (FHC) through porous media is influenced by anions (e.g., PO₄^3-) and cations (e.g., Ca²⁺) in the aqueous environment. This study investigated the cotransport of FHC with P and P/Ca in saturated sand columns. The results showed that P adsorption enhanced FHC transport, whereas Ca loaded onto P-FHC retarded FHC transport. Phosphate adsorption provided a negative potential on the FHC, while Ca added to P-FHC led to electrostatic screening, compression of the electric double layer, and formation of Ca₅(PO₄)₃OH followed by heteroaggregation at pH ≥ 6.0. The monodentate and bidentate P surface complexes coexisted, and Ca mainly formed a ternary complex with bidentate P (≡(FeO)₂PO₂Ca). The unprotonation bidentate P at the Stern 1-plane had a considerable negative potential at the Van der Waals molecular surface. Extending the potential effect to the outer layer of FHC, the potential at the Stern 2-plane and zeta potential exhibited a corresponding change, resulting in a change in FHC mobility, which was validated by comparison of experimental results, DFT calculations, and CD-MUSIC models. Our results highlighted the influence of P and Ca on FHC transport and elucidated their interaction mechanisms based on quantum chemistry and colloidal chemical interface reactions.

Mobilization of colloids during sediment resuspension and its effect on the release of heavy metals and dissolved organic matter

Natural colloids are important in mobilizing pollutants in aquatic environments. This study investigated the mobilization and aggregation of natural colloids during the sediment resuspension and re-sedimentation processes using nanoparticle tracking analysis. The metals and organic matter in overlying water were divided and examined in dissolved (<0.45 μm), colloidal (3 kDa - 0.45 μm), and truly dissolved (<3 kDa) forms. Excitation emission matrix-parallel factor analysis (EEM-PARAFAC) was used to characterize the dissolved organic matter (DOM). In overlying water, most natural colloids were < 200 nm before resuspension. An evident mobilization of colloids and an increase in colloid size were observed during resuspension. The formation of particles (>0.45 μm) and decreases of small colloids (<200 nm) indicated that resuspension promoted the aggregation of colloids. Mobilization of colloids was accompanied by increases in concentrations of Fe, Al, and organic carbon in colloidal fractions, which could be related to the formation of mineral-organic complexes under an oxic environment. The release of DOM from sediments mainly contributed to the truly dissolved humic-like fraction, and colloidal organic carbon accounted for, on average, 20 % of the total dissolved organic carbon (DOC). Fe and Al had the highest colloidal proportions as they are major compositions of inorganic colloids. Substantial removal of dissolved Al, Fe, Pb, and Zn occurred when colloids aggregated in the overlying water. Although the adsorption of suspended particles may also decrease the concentrations of dissolved metals, the increased proportions of colloidal metals indicated a possible role of colloids in this process. These findings provide insight into the behavior of colloids during the resuspension process and indicate that the aggregation of colloids could promote the removal of dissolved matter.

Vanadate Bio-Detoxification Driven by Pyrrhotite with Secondary Mineral Formation

Vanadium(V) is a redox-sensitive heavy-metal contaminant whose environmental mobility is strongly influenced by pyrrhotite, a widely distributed iron sulfide mineral. However, relatively little is known about microbially mediated vanadate [V(V)] reduction characteristics driven by pyrrhotite and concomitant mineral dynamics in this process. This study demonstrated efficient V(V) bioreduction during 210 d of operation, with a lifespan about 10 times longer than abiotic control, especially in a stable period when the V(V) removal efficiency reached 44.1 ± 13.8%. Pyrrhotite oxidation coupled to V(V) reduction could be achieved by an enriched single autotroph (e.g., Thiobacillus and Thermomonas) independently. Autotrophs (e.g., Sulfurifustis) gained energy from pyrrhotite oxidation to synthesize organic intermediates, which were utilized by the heterotrophic V(V) reducing bacteria such as Anaerolinea, Bacillus, and Pseudomonas to sustain V(V) reduction. V(V) was reduced to insoluble tetravalent V, while pyrrhotite oxidation mainly produced Fe(III) and SO₄^2-. Secondary minerals including mackinawite (FeS) and greigite (Fe₃S₄) were produced synchronously, resulting from further transformations of Fe(III) and SO₄^2- by sulfate reducing bacteria (e.g., Desulfatiglans) and magnetotactic bacteria (e.g., Nitrospira). This study provides new insights into the biogeochemical behavior of V under pyrrhotite effects and reveals the previously overlooked mineralogical dynamics in V(V) reduction bioprocesses driven by Fe(II)-bearing minerals.

Sulfide-induced repartition of chromium associated with schwertmannite in acid mine drainage: Impacts and mechanisms

The cycling of Fe/S is often related to the formation and fate of schwertmannite which is particularly suitable as a scavenger for heavy metals and metalloids in acid mine drainage (AMD). However, the interactions between reactivity of S(-II) and schwertmannite with structurally incorporated Cr(VI) remain elusive. This work evaluated dissolution experiments in combination with XRD, SEM, FTIR, TEM, and XPS characterization to provide detailed information regarding the transformation of schwertmannite induced by S(-II) following changes in pH, Cr loading, and S(-II) concentration. Our results found that the presence of sulfide significantly decreased the stabilization of schwertmannite under acidic conditions. The reactivity of the three schwertmannite samples depended on the contents of Cr(VI) that were structurally incorporated and followed the order Sch > 0.13Cr-Sch > 0.17Cr-Sch. High S(-II) concentrations and low Cr doping favored the release of Fe and SO₄^2- from schwertmannite. Attenuation of Cr mobility occurred via elevating the S(-II) concentrations and pH values resulting in Cr concentrations spanning ∼1.39 to ∼0.10 mg L^-1 and ∼1.58 to ∼0.12 mg L^-1 for 0.13Cr-Sch and 0.17Cr-Sch, respectively. Combining the results of characterization, goethite was the dominant end product constituted secondary phase together with sulfide minerals (FeS, FeS₂), iron oxides (Fe₃O₄, Fe₂O₃), and CrFe minerals on the bulk mineral surface. The substituted Cr significantly inhibited the reductive transformation of schwertmannite by sulfide and led to the formation of lepidocrocite. Thus, we concluded that a three-stage transformation mechanistic pathway governed partial conversion of schwertmannite to goethite. This finding provides new understanding of the biogeochemical processes of iron minerals affected by reducing substances that control the transport and fate of immobilizing contaminants in an AMD-polluted area.

Transport of silver nanoparticles coated with polyvinylpyrrolidone of various molecular sizes in porous media: Interplay of polymeric coatings and chemically heterogeneous surfaces

Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are usually capped with stabilizing agents to protect their activities and improve stability. Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) is one of the most used capping agents of AgNPs, and may affect the transport of AgNPs in porous media. The transport and retention of AgNPs capped with PVPs of different molecular weights (PVP10-AgNP, PVP40-AgNP and PVP360-AgNP) in uncoated, and humic acid (HA)-, kaolinite (KL)- and ferrihydrite (FH)-coated sand porous media were investigated. Among the three AgNPs, PVP360-AgNP exhibited the highest mobility and eluted from all types of porous media. This is because PVPs of higher molecular weight provided stronger steric effect and electrostatic repulsive forces among PVP-AgNPs, inducing stronger blocking and shadow effects. The transport of the PVP-AgNPs increased in the HA-Sand columns, while decreased in the KL- and FH-Sand columns, especially for PVP10-AgNP and PVP40-AgNP. The simulation results using one-site kinetic model indicated that HA-Sand reduced the maximum retention capacity (Smax), while KL- and FH-Sand increased the Smax as well as the first-order attachment rate coefficients (katt), particularly at high ionic strength. The results shed light on the interplay of the capping agents of AgNPs and the surface heterogeneity on the transport of AgNPs in porous media.

Effect of phytic acid and morphology on Fe (oxyhydr)oxide transport under saturated flow condition

Phytic acid (myo-inositol hexaphosphate, IHP) is a dominant form of organic phosphate (OP) in organic carbon-rich surface soil. The IHP impact on Fe (oxyhydr)oxide transport is critical for iron and phosphorus (bio)geochemical processes in iron and phosphorus rich soil and subsurface systems. Three typical Fe (oxyhydr)oxides (ferrihydrite, hematite, and goethite) were studied in this research. The effects of IHP and morphology on Fe (oxyhydr)oxide transport and IHP cotransport had been investigated using saturated sand columns. The results showed that IHP significantly enhanced the mobility of Fe (oxyhydr)oxide by 30-90% due to the stronger electrostatic repulsion. At low IHP concentration (< 50 µM IHP), the rod-like goethite and goethite-facilitated IHP showed high mobility due to their orientation and motion along the water flow, which is 70% faster than ferrihydrite and hematite at pH 5 and 90% faster at pH 10. The mobility of amorphous ferrihydrite was slowest among three selected iron oxides (< 37% at pH 5 and < 72% at pH 10). At high IHP concentration (> 50 μM IHP), the surface precipitation might have occurred on ferrihydrite because of its poorly ordered crystallinity, contributing to its less negatively charged surface and weak transport. The new insight provided in this study is essential for evaluating the fate and transport behavior of iron and iron-facilitate OP in soil rich in iron and OP.

Extracellular electron transfer influences the transport and retention of ferrihydrite nanoparticles in quartz sand coated with Shewanella oneidensis biofilm

Microbial biofilm has been found to impact the mobility of nanoparticles in saturated porous media by altering physicochemical properties of collector surface. However, little is known about the influence of biofilm's biological activity on nanoparticle transport and retention. Here, the transport of ferrihydrite nanoparticles (FhNPs) was studied in quartz sands coated with biofilm of Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 that is capable of reducing Fe(III) through extracellular electron transfer (EET). It was found that MR-1 biofilm coating enhanced FhNPs' deposition under different pH/ionic strength conditions and humic acid concentrations. More importantly, when the influent electron donor (glucose) concentration was increased to promote biofilm's EET activity, the breakthrough of FhNPs in biofilm-coated sands was inhibited. A lack of continuous and stable supply of electron donor, on the contrary, led to remobilization and release of the originally retained FhNPs. Column experiments with biofilm of EET-deficient MR-1 mutants (ΔomcA/ΔmtrC and ΔcymA) further indicated that the impairment of EET activity decreased the retention of FhNPs. It is proposed that the effective surface binding and adhesion of FhNPs that is required by direct EET cannot be neglected when evaluating the transport of FhNPs in sands coated with electroactive biofilm.

Transport of nanoparticles in porous media and its effects on the co-existing pollutants

Nanomaterials are widely used in daily life owing to their superior characteristics. The release and transport of nanoparticles (NPs) in the environment is inevitable during their entire life cycle, posing a risk to the aquatic environment. Thus, considerable attention has been focused on the fate and behavior of NPs in porous media, as well as the co-transport of NPs with other pollutants. In this review, current knowledge about the retention and transport behavior of NPs in porous media is summarized. NP transport in porous media is dominated by various internal and external factors, including the characteristics of NPs, porous media, and water flow. Generally, NPs with high density, small particle size, and surface coating are easily transported in porous media with the characteristics of large size, smooth surface, and low water saturation. Meanwhile, high pH and velocity, low temperature, and natural organic matter-containing fluids are also conducive to NP transport. Aggregation, adsorption, straining, and blocking are the primary mechanisms by which NPs affect the transport of co-existing pollutants in porous media. Current research on NP transport has been performed predominantly using modal porous media (e.g., sand and glass beads); however, there is a large gap between simulated and natural porous media. Further studies should focus on the transport, fate, and interaction of NPs and coexistent pollutants in natural porous media, as well as the coupling mechanisms under actual environmental conditions.

Hazardous Solid Waste Confined in Closed Dump of Morelia: An Urgent Environmental Liability to Attend in Developing Countries

In developing countries, landfills of urban solid waste (USW) are a major source of contamination. One reason is the common practice of the illegal confinement of hazardous waste (HW). The contamination is mainly due to deficitary design location, operation and lack of liner, which enables the dispersion of pollutants. The aim of our work is to demonstrate the presence of heavy metals (HM) and arsenic (As) in USW of the closed dump of Morelia, which clandestinely confined HW for 20 years. Solid samples of USW were collected from eight opencast wells with different age of confinement. Composition, degradation status, physical-chemical characterization and analysis of HM and As were carried out. The results showed the presence of Pb, Cu, Ni, Zn, Cr, Fe and high concentrations of As. This study provides evidence about the usual and illegal practice of landfill HW together with USW; the hazard due to the presence of HM and As; the deficiency in the operation and closure; and, the lack of competent legislation on the subject. This information is essential to establish background information for improving laws and help decision makers in territorial planning to improve public and environment health.

Formation and Transport of Cr(III)-NOM-Fe Colloids upon Reaction of Cr(VI) with NOM-Fe(II) Colloids at Anoxic-Oxic Interfaces

Natural organic matter-iron (NOM-Fe) colloids are ubiquitous at anoxic-oxic interfaces of subsurface environments. Fe(II) or NOM can chemically reduce Cr(VI) to Cr(III), and the formation of Cr(III)-NOM-Fe colloids can control the fate and transport of Cr. We explored the formation and transport of Cr(III)-humic acid (HA)-Fe colloids upon reaction of Cr(VI) with HA-Fe(II) colloids over a range of environmentally relevant conditions. Cr(VI) was completely reduced by HA-Fe(II) complexes under anoxic conditions, and the formation of Cr(III)-HA-Fe colloids depended on HA concentration (or molar C/Fe ratio) and redox conditions. No colloids formed at HA concentrations below 3.5 mg C/L (C/Fe ratio below 1.6), but Cr(III)-HA-Fe colloids formed at higher HA concentrations. In column experiments, Cr(III)-HA-Fe(III) colloids formed under oxic conditions were readily transported through sand-packed porous media. Colloidal stability measurements further suggest that Cr(III)-HA-Fe colloids are highly stable and persist for at least 20 days without substantial change in particle size. This stability is attributed to the enrichment of free HA adsorbed on the Cr(III)-HA-Fe colloid surfaces, intensifying the electrostatic and/or steric repulsion interactions between particles. The new insights provided here are important for evaluating the long-term fate and transport of Cr in organic-rich redox transition zones.

Transport and retention of Shewanella oneidensis strain MR1 in water-saturated porous media with different grain-surface properties

Bacterium Shewanella oneidensis strain (MR1), a facultative microorganism that plays critical role in contaminant transformation and degradation, was used as an example to decipher the transport and retention of microorganisms in water-saturated porous media with different grain-surface properties and under different ionic compositions (i.e. Na⁺, Ca²⁺, and Mg²⁺). Dolomite and quartz sands, which contained different surface charge properties, were used as the representative minerals. Dolomite was selected because its surface charges are significantly affected by solution composition. The mobility of MR1 in the dolomite column was lower than that in the quartz column, because the lower energy barrier between MR1 and dolomite than that between MR1 and quartz, resulting in the larger retention of MR1 in the dolomite column. The breakthrough curves were well simulated by the two sites kinetic model with HYDRUS-1D. The maximum concentration of attached bacteria (S_max) were positively correlated to the ionic strength regardless of mineral types. The values of S_max were about 1.1-4.0 times larger in the MR1-dolomite system than that in the MR1-quartz system under different ionic strength conditions. The retention of the MR1 on dolomite surfaces in the presence of divalent cations Ca²⁺ is significantly higher than that on quartz surfaces primarily due to the larger electrostatic attraction energy between the MR1 and dolomite grains. The findings demonstrate that the porous media with the lower negative charge has the higher capacity for the retention and deposition of MR1, potentially affecting the transport of MR1 and other bacteria in the subsurface.

Elucidating the Role of Sulfide on the Stability of Ferrihydrite Colloids under Anoxic Conditions

While the reaction mechanisms between ferrihydrite and sulfide are well-documented, the role of redox reactions on the particle-particle stability of ferrihydrite colloids is largely overlooked. Such reactions are critical for a number of (bio)geochemical processes governing ferrihydrite-based colloid processing and their associated role in nutrient and contaminant subsurface dynamics. Taking a fundamental colloid chemistry approach, along with a complementary suite of characterization techniques, here, we explore the stability mechanisms of ferrihydrite colloids over a wide range of environmentally relevant sulfide concentrations at pH 6.0. Results show that sulfide lowered the stability of both ferrihydrite colloids in a concentration-dependent fashion. At lower sulfide concentrations (15.6-62.5 μM), ferrihydrite colloids are apparently stable, but their critical coagulation concentration (CCC) in NaCl linearly decreases with increasing sulfide concentration. This is attributed to the formation of negatively charged elemental sulfur (S(0)) nanoparticles on the surfaces of positively charged ferrihydrite, intensifying the electrostatic attractions between oppositely charged regions on adjacent ferrihydrite surfaces. Further increasing sulfide concentration generates more S(0) attaching to the ferrihydrite surface. This results in effective surface charge neutralization and then subsequent charge reversal, leading to extensive aggregation of ferrihydrite (core) colloids. Interestingly, for the ferrihydrite colloids with higher hydrodynamic diameter, aggregation rates linearly decreases with increasing sulfide concentration from 156.3 to 312.5 μM, which is likely due to the formation of substantial amounts of negatively charged S(0) and FeS. Findings highlight the significance of sulfidation products in controlling the stability of ferrihydrite colloids in sulfidic environments.

Cotransport and Deposition of Iron Oxides with Different-Sized Plastic Particles in Saturated Quartz Sand

The present study was designed to investigate the cotransport and deposition of different-sized plastic particle from nano- (0.02 μm) to micrometer-scale (0.2 and 2 μm) with goethite and hematite (two types of representative iron oxides abundant in natural environment) in porous media at both low (5 mM) and high ionic strength (25 mM) in NaCl solutions. We found that through different mechanisms (i.e., modification of surface properties of iron oxides, steric repulsion, or alteration in deposition sites on quartz sand), different-sized plastic particles induced different effects on the transport and deposition behaviors of iron oxides in quartz sand. Likewise, via different mechanisms such as change of surface properties or alteration in deposition sites on quartz sand, different transport behaviors for different sized plastic particles induced by the copresence of iron oxides were also observed. The results of this study suggested that cotransport of iron oxides and plastic particles in porous media is far more complex than those of individual colloid transport. Since both plastic particles and iron oxides are ubiquitous presence in natural environment, it is expected that they would interact with each other and thus alter the surface properties, leading to the change of transport behaviors in porous media.

Cotransport of biochar and Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 in saturated porous media: Impacts of electrostatic interaction, extracellular electron transfer and microbial taxis

Biochar widely applied to soil can influence microbial community composition and participate in extracellular electron transfer (EET). However, little is known about the cotransport behaviors of bacteria and biochar in aquifer and soil-water environments, which can affect the fate and application performance of biochar. In this study, we found that in comparison to their individual transport behaviors, the mobilities of cotransporting Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 and biochar colloid (BC) were significantly inhibited. The decreasing colloidal mobilities at higher ionic strengths signified the importance of electrostatic interaction between cell and BC in cotransport. Moreover, the less suppressed cotransport of BC and mutants defective of EET and the elevated inhibition effects on cotransport by adding exogenous electron donor suggested the importance of EET. Difference in cotransport behavior was also observed with BC having different redox states. Compared with oxidized BC, reduced BC with higher hydrophobicity led to easier aggregation with cell and higher retention in column. More importantly, MR-1 exhibited EET-dependent taxis towards biochar, which also contributed to the enhanced heteroaggregation and decreased mobilities of cell and biochar. Our results highlight that metabolic activities of microbes towards abiotic colloids cannot be neglected when assessing their transport behaviors, especially in subsurface environments abounded with redox-active inorganic particles and microbes performing extracellular respiration.

Impacts of leachate of landfill on the groundwater hydrochemistry and size distributions and heavy metal components of colloids: a case study in NE China

Colloids associated with heavy metals are ubiquitous in contaminated groundwater; waste accumulation at imperfectly sealed landfills can produce large amounts of leachate with colloids and heavy metal contaminants, which can pollute the downstream groundwater. In this study, three sites in a landfill were sampled to reveal heavy metal particle size distributions and their chemical compositions. The > 220 nm particle sizes were the predominant size in the downstream groundwater, while the < 10 nm particle sizes were the predominant size in the upstream groundwater. Total Fe increased from 35.5 μg/L in the upstream groundwater to 107 μg/L in the downstream groundwater. This increase was attributed to the enhanced migration and accumulation of colloids in the aqueous phase. The elements and the colloid size distribution in the landfill indirectly reflected the composition and degradation of the waste. Colloids played a key role in distribution of both solid particles and aqueous contaminants in the landfill. The results of this study will contribute to the knowledge of the effect of different contaminants in the vicinity of landfills without appropriate sealing systems.

Effect of reduced humic acid on the transport of ferrihydrite nanoparticles under anoxic conditions

Humic acid (HA) occurs ubiquitously in the subsurface environments and is well-known to play a critical role in the fate and transport of ferrihydrite nanoparticles (NPs) and NPs-associated contaminants. Under anoxic conditions, HA can readily be reduced by microorganisms or geochemical reducing species, and the mechanisms and kinetics of ferrihydrite reduction by reduced HA (HA_red) are well-documented; however, the role of these redox reactions on the transport of ferrihydrite NPs is largely underestimated. This study provides new knowledge regarding the role of HA (both reduced HA (HA_red) and oxidized HA (HA_ox)) of environmentally relevant concentrations (0-50 mg C/L) on the transport of ferrihydrite NPs in anoxic sand columns. Our findings show that, regardless of the redox state, the presence of a low concentration of HA (3 mg C/L) inhibited ferrihydrite NP's transport due to enhanced aggregation (and deposition) between positively charged ferrihydrite NPs and negatively charged HA molecules. In contrast, higher HA (both HA_red and HA_ox) concentration (≥10 mg C/L) significantly enhanced the mobility of ferrihydrite NPs, primarily due to the enhanced electrostatic and steric stabilization originating from excessively adsorbed HA molecules. Interestingly, the transport of ferrihydrite NPs is substantially lower in the presence of HA_red than in the presence of HA_ox. This distinct effect (HA_red vs. HA_ox) on the particle transport is attributed to the fact that reductive dissolution of ferrihydrite NPs occurs in the presence of HA_red (ferrihydrite dissolves and thus total breakthrough decreases), but not in the presence of HA_ox. Furthermore, the abatement extent of ferrihydrite NPs transport triggered by the presence of HA_red is dependent on dissolved HA_red concentration. Taken together, our findings provide direct, and much needed insights into the distinct roles of redox state of HA on the transport of redox-sensitive metal-bearing NPs in porous media.
