Electrospun Magnetic Nanoparticle-Decorated Nanofiber Filter and Its Applications to High-Efficiency Air Filtration

Fluorine-Free Amphiphobic SBS/PAN Micro/Nanofiber Membrane by Integrating Click Reaction with Electrospinning for Efficient and Recyclable Air Filtration

The membrane fouling derived from the accumulated dust pollutants and highly viscous oily particles causes irreversible damage to the filtration performance of air filters and results in a significant reduction in their service life. However, it is still challenging to construct high-efficiency and antifouling air filtration membranes with recyclable regeneration. Herein, the fluorine-free amphiphobic micro/nanofiber composite membrane was controllably constructed by integrating click chemistry reaction and electrospinning technique. Low-surface-energy fibers were constructed by a thiol-ene click chemical reaction between mercaptosilane and vinyl groups of polystyrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS), combined with hydroxyl-terminated poly(dimethylsiloxane) during the electrospinning process. The functional air filter is then prepared by the two-layer composite strategy. Because of the advantages of liquid-like fibrous surface and micro/nanofibrous porous structure, SBS/PAN composite membrane simultaneously shows superior antifouling performances of pollutants and filtration efficiency of over 97% PM0.3 removal. More importantly, the antifouling fibrous membrane still presents a stable and efficient filtration efficiency after multiple washes. Its service life in dust filtration environments is approximately 1.7 times longer than that of the substrate membrane. This work may provide a significant reference for the design of antifouling fiber membranes and high-efficiency air filters with long life spans and reusability.

Indoor air quality in subway microenvironments: Pollutant characteristics, adverse health impacts, and population inequity

Rapidly increasing urbanization in recent decades has elevated the subway as the primary public transportation mode in metropolitan areas. Indoor air quality (IAQ) inside subways is an important factor that influences the health of commuters and subway workers. This review discusses the subway IAQ in different cities worldwide by comparing the sources and abundance of particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10) in these environments. Factors that affect PM concentration and chemical composition were found to be associated with the subway internal structure, train frequency, passenger volume, and geographical location. Special attention was paid to air pollutants, such as transition metals, volatile/semi-volatile organic compounds (VOCs and SVOCs), and bioaerosols, due to their potential roles in indoor chemistry and causing adverse health impacts. In addition, given that the IAQ of subway systems is a public health issue worldwide, we calculated the Gini coefficient of urban subway exposure via meta-analysis. A value of 0.56 showed a significant inequity among different cities. Developed regions with higher per capita income tend to have higher exposure. By reviewing the current advances and challenges in subway IAQ with a focus on indoor chemistry and health impacts, future research is proposed toward a sustainable urban transportation systems.

Three-Dimensional Printable Magnetic Microfibers: Development and Characterization for Four-Dimensional Printing

This study proposes a novel and simple fabrication method of magnetic microfibers, employing filament stretching three-dimensional (3D) printing, and demonstrates the capacity of four-dimensional (4D) printing of the proposed magnetic microfibers. A ferromagnetic 3D printing filament is prepared by the mixture of neodymium-iron-boron (NdFeB) and polylactic acid (PLA), and we investigate the characteristics of the ferromagnetic filament by mixing ratio, magnetic properties, mechanical properties, and rheological properties through experiments. By thermal extrusion of the ferromagnetic filament through a 3D printer nozzle, various thicknesses (80-500 μm) and lengths (less than ∼5 cm) of ferromagnetic microfibers are achieved with different printing setups, such as filament extrusion amount and printing speed. The printed ferromagnetic microfibers are magnetized to maintain a permanent magnetic dipole moment, and 4D printing can be achieved by the deformations of the permanently magnetized microfibers under magnetic fields. We observe that the mixing ratio, the thickness, and the length of the magnetized microfibers provide distinct deformation of the microfiber for customization of 4D printings. This study exhibits that the permanently magnetized microfibers have a great potential for smart sensors and actuators. Furthermore, we briefly present an application of our proposed magnetic microfibers for bionic motion actuators with various unique undulating and oscillating motions.

Preparation of an innovative series of respiratory nano-filters using polystyrene fibrous films containing KCC-1 dendrimer and ZnO nanostructures for environmental assessment of SO2, NO2 and CO2

Air pollution has become a major challenge that threatens human health. The use of respiratory filters is one of the proposed solutions. In this study, using polystyrene (PS) fibers and various nanomaterials, improved respiratory filters were fabricated to remove air pollutants. In this context, ZnO nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) integrated into dendritic structures of KCC-1 silica were used to improve the filters' ability to absorb pollutants. For the first time, the removal of gasses by modified filters with a novel polymeric nanocomposite (PS/ZnO-KCC-1) stabilized on the surface of respiratory filters was investigated. Moreover, two different methods including stabilized- and solution-based techniques were used to prepare the filters with different amounts of ZnO NPs and their efficiency was evaluated. All synthesized nanocomposites and developed filters were characterized by FT-IR, FESEM, TGA and XRD methods. The successful stabilization of nanostructures on the fibers was proved and the performance of the fibers was investigated with some tests, such as pressure drop and removal of suspended particles and CO2 (89%), NO2 (86%), and SO2 (83%) gases. PS/KCC-1-ZnO (5%) has better performance than other prepared fibers. The results showed that the removal of suspended particles in the filter containing ZnO and KCC-1 (M5) nanostructures was improved by 18% compared to the filter consisting of polystyrene fibers. The pressure drop increased with the addition of nanostructures and reached 180 Pa in the M5 filter. The filter containing ZnO NPs showed antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus (S.) aureus and Escherichia (E.) coli as Gram-positive and Gram-negative model bacteria using the Agar disk-diffusion method. Based on the results, the use of improved respiratory filters is recommended as an effective solution for combating air pollution and protecting human health.

ZnO-PLLA/PLLA Preparation and Application in Air Filtration by Electrospinning Technology

With the increasing environmental pollution caused by disposable masks, it is crucial to develop new degradable filtration materials for medical masks. ZnO-PLLA/PLLA (L-lactide) copolymers prepared from nano ZnO and L-lactide were used to prepare fiber films for air filtration by electrospinning technology. Structural characterization of ZnO-PLLA by H-NMR, XPS, and XRD demonstrated that ZnO was successfully grafted onto PLLA. An L₉(4³) standard orthogonal array was employed to evaluate the effects of the ZnO-PLLA concentration, ZnO-PLLA/PLLA content, DCM(dichloromethane) to DMF(N,N-dimethylformamide) ratio, and spinning time on the air filtration capacity of ZnO-PLLA/PLLA nanofiber films. It is noteworthy that the introduction of ZnO is important for the enhancement of the quality factor (QF). The optimal group obtained was sample No. 7, where the QF was 0.1403 Pa^-1, the particle filtration efficiency (PFE) was 98.3%, the bacteria filtration efficiency (BFE) was 98.42%, and the airflow resistance (Δp) was 29.2 Pa. Therefore, the as-prepared ZnO-PLLA/PLLA film has potential for the development of degradable masks.

A review on characteristics and mitigation strategies of indoor air quality in underground subway stations

Due to the rapidly increasing ridership and the relatively enclosed underground space, the indoor air quality (IAQ) in underground subway stations (USSs) has attracted more public attention. The air pollutants in USSs, such as particulate matter (PM), CO₂ and volatile organic compounds (VOCs), are hazardous to the health of passengers and staves. Firstly, this paper presents a systematic review on the characteristics and sources of air pollutants in USSs. According to the review work, the concentrations of PM, CO₂, VOCs, bacteria and fungi in USSs are 1.1-13.2 times higher than the permissible concentration limits specified by WHO, ASHRAE and US EPA. The PM and VOCs are mainly derived from the internal and outdoor sources. CO₂ concentrations are highly correlated with the passenger density and the ventilation rate while the exposure levels of bacteria and fungi depend on the thermal conditions and the settled dust. Then, the online monitoring, fault detection and prediction methods of IAQ are summarized and the advantages and disadvantages of these methods are also discussed. In addition, the available control strategies for improving IAQ in USSs are reviewed, and these strategies are classified and compared from different viewpoints. Lastly, challenges of the IAQ management in the context of the COVID-19 epidemic and several suggestions for underground stations' IAQ management in the future are put forward. This paper is expected to provide a comprehensive guidance for further research and design of the effective prevention measures on air pollutants in USSs so as to achieve more sustainable and healthy underground environment.

Application of Electrospun Water-Soluble Synthetic Polymers for Multifunctional Air Filters and Face Masks

The worsening of air quality is an urgent human health issue of modern society. The outbreak of COVID-19 has made the improvement of air quality even more imperative, both for the general achievement of major health gains and to reduce the critical factors in the transmission of airborne diseases. Thus, the development of solutions for the filtration of airborne pollutants is pivotal. Electrospinning has gained wide attention as an effective fabrication technique for preparing ultrafine fibers which are specifically tailored for air filtration. Nevertheless, the utilization of harmful organic solvents is the major barrier for the large-scale applicability of electrospinning. The use of water-soluble synthetic polymers has attracted increasing attention as a 'green' solution in electrospinning. We reported an overview of the last five years of the scientific literature on the use of water-soluble synthetic polymers for the fabrication of multifunctional air filters layers. Most of recent studies have focused on polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). Various modifications of electrospun polymers have been also described. The use of water-soluble synthetic polymers can contribute to the scalability of electrospinning and pave the way to innovative applications. Further studies will be required to fully harness the potentiality of these 'greener' electrospinning processes.

Processing Nomex Nanofibers by Ionic Solution Blow-Spinning for Efficient High-Temperature Exhausts Treatment

Hard-to-dissolve polymers provide next-generation alternatives for high-performance filter materials owing to their intrinsically high chemical stability, superior mechanical performance, and excellent high-temperature resistance. However, the mass production of hard-to-dissolve nanofibers still remains a critical challenge. A simple, scalable, and low-cost ionic solution blow-spinning method has herein been provided for the large-scale preparation of hard-to-dissolve Nomex polymeric nanofibers with an average diameter of nearly 100 nm. After rapidly dissolving Nomex microfibers in the lithium chloride/dimethylacetamide (LiCl/DMAc) solution system, the conductive solution can be stably and conductivity-independently processed into nanofibers. The method optimizes electrospinning and avoids spinnability degradation and potential safety hazards caused by high electrical conductivity. Owing to nanofibrous structure and high dipole moment, Nomex nanofibrous filters show a stable high filtration efficiency of 99.92% for PM_0.3 with a low areal density of 4.6 g m^-2, as well as a low-pressure drop of 189.47 Pa. Moreover, the flame-retardant filter can work at 250 °C and 280 °C for a long and short time without shrinking or burning, respectively, exhibiting a high filtration efficiency of 99.50% for PM_0.3-10.0. The outstanding properties and low cost enable the efficient capture of PM from various high-temperature exhausts, making Nomex nanofibrous membrane an even more ideal industrial-grade air filter than polypropylene, polytetrafluoroethylene, polyimide, and ceramic nanofibrous filters.

Simple fabrication of an electrospun polystyrene microfiber filter that meets N95 filtering facepiece respirator filtration and breathability standards

During the global spread of COVID-19, high demand and limited availability of melt-blown filtration material led to a manufacturing backlog of N95 Filtering Facepiece Respirators (FFRs). This shortfall prompted the search for alternative filter materials that could be quickly mass produced while meeting N95 FFR filtration and breathability performance standards. Here, an unsupported, nonwoven layer of uncharged polystyrene (PS) microfibers was produced via electrospinning that achieves N95 performance standards based on physical parameters (e.g., filter thickness) alone. PS microfibers 3-6 μm in diameter and deposited in an ~5 mm thick filter layer are favorable for use in FFRs, achieving high filtration efficiencies (≥97.5%) and low pressure drops (≤15 mm H₂O). The PS microfiber filter demonstrates durability upon disinfection with hydroxyl radicals (•OH), maintaining high filtration efficiencies and low pressure drops over six rounds of disinfection. Additionally, the PS microfibers exhibit antibacterial activity (1-log removal of E. coli) and can be modified readily through integration of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) during electrospinning to enhance their activity (≥3-log removal at 25 wt% AgNP integration). Because of their tunable performance, potential reusability with disinfection, and antimicrobial properties, these electrospun PS microfibers may represent a suitable, alternative filter material for use in N95 FFRs.

Anchoring silver nanoparticles on nanofibers by thermal bonding to construct functional surface

Generally, the anchoring of inorganic nanoparticles onto the surface of fibers faces the problem of poor stability, which limits the wide application of nanoparticle functionalized fibers. Herein, nanofibers with shell-core structures were constructed by coaxial electrospinning of two polymers with different melting points (T_m). Polyglycolic acid (PGA, T_m = 225 °C) was employed as the core layer, while polycaprolactone (PCL, T_m = 60 °C) was used as the shell layer. Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were electrosprayed on the nanofibers and the shell layer (PCL) was heated and melted to bond the AgNPs, thus realizing a stable AgNP-composited nanofiber for the construction of antibacterial functional surface. By regulating the shell-core flow ratio and the condition for heat treatment, the appropriate thickness of the shell layer was obtained with a flow ratio of 3:1 (PCL:PGA). The optimal composite structure was constructed when the thermal bonding was taken under 80 °C for 5 min. Furthermore, it was found that the composite nanofibers prepared by thermal bonding had better hydrophilicity, mechanical property, and AgNPs bonding stability, and their antibacterial rate against Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) reached over 97%. Overall, a facile and universal method for the preparation of nanoparticle-anchored nanofibers was established in this study. The robust nanoparticle-composited nanofibers are promising for applications in optoelectronic devices, electrode materials, and so on.

Preparation and characterization of electrospun nanofibers-based facial mask containing hyaluronic acid as a moisturizing component and huangshui polysaccharide as an antioxidant component

A novel nanofiber material incorporating hyaluronic acid (HA), crude huangshui polysaccharide (cHSP) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) were prepared to obtain dry facial masks (PVA/HA/cHSP) via electrospinning. The facial mask was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), water absorption and retention evaluation, in vitro release study, DPPH and hydroxyl free radical scavenging measurements, red blood cell hemolysis and chick embryo chorioallantoic membrane assay. The results suggested that the fiber mask was densely homogeneous, uniform and well distributed with a diameter <260 nm. Meanwhile, the water absorption rate was >300 %, DPPH and hydroxyl free radical half-inhibitory concentrations of cHSP aqueous solution scavenging were 0.2781 and 1.029 mg/mL, respectively. The PVA/HA/cHSP could retain the antioxidant capacity of cHSP, possessing simultaneous excellent moisture retention and oxidation resistance. Importantly, the mucous membrane irritation experiment indicated that it was mild and safe.

Preparation of Various Nanomaterials via Controlled Gelation of a Hydrophilic Polymer Bearing Metal-Coordination Units with Metal Ions

We investigated the gelation of a hydrophilic polymer with metal-coordination units (HPMC) and metal ions (PdII or AuIII). Gelation proceeded by addition of an HPMC solution in N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) to a metal ion aqueous solution. An increase in the composition ratio of the metal-coordination units from 10 mol% to 34 mol% (HPMC-34) increased the cross-linking rate with AuIII. Cross-linking immediately occurred after dropwise addition of an HPMC-34 solution to the AuIII solution, generating the separation between the phases of HPMC-34 and AuIII. The cross-linking of AuIII proceeded from the surface to the inside of the HPMC-34 droplets, affording spherical gels. In contrast, a decrease in the ratio of metal-coordination units from 10 mol% to 4 mol% (HPMC-4) decreased the PdII cross-linking rate. The cross-linking occurred gradually and the gels extended to the bottom of the vessel, forming fibrous gels. On the basis of the mechanism for the formation of gels with different morphologies, the gelation of HPMC-34 and AuIII provided nanosheets via gelation at the interface between the AuIII solution and the HPMC-34 solution. The gelation of HPMC-4 and PdII afforded nanofibers by a facile method, i.e., dropwise addition of the HPMC-4 solution to the PdII solution. These results demonstrated that changing the composition ratio of the metal-coordination units in HPMC can control the gelation behavior, resulting in different types of nanomaterials.

Fabrication and evaluation of electrospun polyacrylonitrile/silver nanofiber membranes for air filtration and antibacterial activity

Particulate matter and airborne microorganisms are two of the most severe indoor air problems due to their significant risks to human health. Comprehensive research on air filtration with good filtration performance for fine particles and antibacterial function is essential. In this study, after some experimentations and optimization of conditions, polyacrylonitrile (PAN) 10–1% silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) membranes with suitable morphology and uniform diameter distribution are fabricated by an electrospinning method. These electrospun mats exhibited antibacterial activity toward Staphylococcus aureus (Gram-positive bacteria) and Escherichia coli (Gram-negative bacteria). With its small pore size, high porosity, the high specific surface area of 42 m²/g, and robust mechanical strength of 7.14 MPa properties, the resultant PAN10%-1%Ag membranes exhibit high filtration efficiency of 99.27%, the low pressure drop of 33 Pa, and higher quality factor compared to the two standard commercial masks including, the three-ply surgical mask and the respirator face mask. After 24 h of the filtration process in a simulated living environment, the obtained air filter still displayed a high filtration efficiency and a less pressure drop variation. In addition, the R² value was 0.99, which indicates that the calculation results are in good agreement with the measured results. The fabrication of PAN-Ag membranes will have broad applications, including face masks, indoor air filtration and clean room.

Viscosity Simulation of Glass Microfiber and an Unusual Air Filter with High-Efficiency Antibacterial Functionality Enabled by ZnO/Graphene-Modified Glass Microfiber

The current global pandemic of new coronary pneumonia clearly reveals the importance of developing highly efficient filtration and fast germicidal performance of multifunctional air filters. In this study, a novel air filter with a controllable morphology based on the rod-like to flower-like zinc oxide/graphene-based photocatalytic composite particles loaded on glass microfiber was prepared by one-step microwave rapid synthesis. The multifunctional air filter shows the following special functions: the 10 mg·L^-1 organic pollutant solution RhB was completely degraded within 2 h under a 500 W xenon lamp, and also 99% of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus were inactivated under a 60 W light-emitting diode lamp. Furthermore, after introducing the controllable morphology zinc oxide/graphene-based photocatalytic composite particles, the filtration efficiency of the multifunctional air filter was also kept at the same level (99.8%) as the one without any addition, indicating no loss of high-efficiency filtration while obtaining the rapid bactericidal function. The rapid antibacterial principle of the multifunctional air filter has also been proposed through the UV-vis spectroscopies, photoluminescence, and electron-spin resonance spectrum. The zinc oxide/graphene-based photocatalytic composite particles tightly coated on the glass microfiber surface could increase the active sites by changing the morphology of zinc oxide and, in the meantime, promote the separation of zinc oxide photo-generated electron-hole pairs to improve the rapid sterilization ability of the multifunctional air filters. In addition, an empirical formula to evaluate the relationship between the composition, viscosity, and viscosity modulus of glass microfiber was proposed by testing the viscosity of glass microfiber composed of 14 different compositions at 1300 and 1400 °C, which can be used as a criterion to evaluate the production technology of glass microfiber filters.

Electrospun Nanofiber Membranes for Air Filtration: A Review

Nanomaterials for air filtration have been studied by researchers for decades. Owing to the advantages of high porosity, small pore size, and good connectivity, nanofiber membranes prepared by electrospinning technology have been considered as an outstanding air-filter candidate. To satisfy the requirements of material functionalization, electrospinning can provide a simple and efficient one-step process to fabricate the complex structures of functional nanofibers such as core-sheath structures, Janus structures, and other multilayered structures. Additionally, as a nanoparticle carrier, electrospun nanofibers can easily achieve antibacterial properties, flame-retardant properties, and the adsorption properties of volatile gases, etc. These simple and effective approaches have benefited from the significate development of electrospun nanofibers for air-filtration applications. In this review, the research progress on electrospun nanofibers as air filters in recent years is summarized. The fabrication methods, filtration performances, advantages, and disadvantages of single-polymer nanofibers, multipolymer composite nanofibers, and nanoparticle-doped hybrid nanofibers are investigated. Finally, the basic principles of air filtration are concluded upon and prospects for the application of complex-structured nanofibers in the field of air filtration are proposed.

A Hierarchical Structure of Flower-Like Zinc Oxide and Poly(Vinyl Alcohol-co-Ethylene) Nanofiber Hybrid Membranes for High-Performance Air Filters

In this article, we reported a hierarchical structure of flower-like zinc oxide (ZnO) and poly(vinyl alcohol-co-ethylene) (PVA-co-PE) nanofiber (ZnO@NF) hybrid membranes for high-performance air filters. Monodispersed flower-like ZnO superstructures were fabricated using a template-free and surfactant-free hydrothermal method, and PVA-co-PE nanofiber yarns were prepared using a melt extrusion phase separation approach. The PVA-co-PE nanofiber yarns were subjected to high-speed shearing in a mixed aqueous solution of isopropanol and water to obtain a stably dispersed nanofiber suspension. The ZnO@NF hybrid air filter was obtained by coating the mixture of flower-like ZnO superstructures and the PVA-co-PE nanofiber suspension on the surface of the polypropylene (PP) meltblown nonwoven with the electret charge eliminated. The filtration efficiency of the ZnO@NF hybrid air filter increases with increasing loading amount of the flower-like ZnO superstructures, while the pressure drop decreases. The flower-like ZnO superstructures were incorporated into the nanofiber-interconnected networks, which significantly reduces the pressure drop of the pure PVA-co-PE nanofiber air filter. The filtration efficiency of the ZnO@NF hybrid air filter is much higher than that of PP meltblown nonwoven with eliminated electret charge, solving the hidden problem of electret charge dissipation during the protection process. It is demonstrated that these nanofiber hybrid air filters have great application potential in some special areas such as high-temperature and high-humidity environments.

Ambient Air Purification by Nanotechnologies: From Theory to Application

Air pollution has been a recurring problem in northern Chinese cities, and high concentrations of PM2.5 in winter have been a particular cause for concern. Secondary aerosols converted from precursor gases (i.e., nitrogen oxides and volatile organic compounds) evidently account for a large fraction of the PM2.5. Conventional control methods, such as dust removal, desulfurization, and denitrification, help reduce emissions from stationary combustion sources, but these measures have not led to decreases in haze events. Recent advances in nanomaterials and nanotechnology provide new opportunities for removing fine particles and gaseous pollutants from ambient air and reducing the impacts on human health. This review begins with overviews of air pollution and traditional abatement technologies, and then advances in ambient air purification by nanotechnologies, including filtration, adsorption, photocatalysis, and ambient-temperature catalysis are presented—from fundamental principles to applications. Current state-of-the-art developments in the use of nanomaterials for particle removal, gas adsorption, and catalysis are summarized, and practical applications of catalysis-based techniques for air purification by nanomaterials in indoor, semi-enclosed, and open spaces are highlighted. Finally, we propose future directions for the development of novel disinfectant nanomaterials and the construction of advanced air purification devices.

A superfine glass fibre air filter with rapid response to photocatalytic antibacterial properties under visible light by loading rGO/ZnO

The development of high-performance air filter has become more and more important to public health. However, it has always been very challenging for developing a multifunctional air filter to simultaneously achieve excellent filtration and antibacterial properties. Herein, a versatile air filter was prepared with loading the reduced graphene (rGO) and zinc oxide on the superfine glass fibre (s-GF) with the three-dimensional network structure by in situ sol-gel process followed by calcination, which aims to achieve synergistic high-efficiency air filtration and rapid response to photocatalytic antibacterial properties under visible light. The air filter showed a three-dimensional network structure based on a rGO/ZnO/s-GF multilayer and exhibited the highest catalytic performance by achieving a 95% degradation effect on rhodamine B within 2 h and achieving 100% antibacterial inactivation of the Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus within 4 h under visible light when the weight ratio of rGO in rGO/ZnO is 1.6%. The air filtration efficiency can also be maintained at 99% after loading ZnO and rGO photocatalytic particles. The spectrum of the photoluminescence (PL), UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectra (DRS) and electron spin resonance (ESR) indicate that the combination of rGO and ZnO on the s-GF can increase the separation of photogenerated carriers and the specific surface area of the air filter, thereby increasing the photocatalytic response and antibacterial properties of the s-GF air filter under visible light in a short time.

Application of Electrospinning in Antibacterial Field

In recent years, electrospun nanofibers have attracted extensive attention due to their large specific surface area, high porosity, and controllable shape. Among the many applications of electrospinning, electrospun nanofibers used in fields such as tissue engineering, food packaging, and air purification often require some antibacterial properties. This paper expounds the development potential of electrospinning in the antibacterial field from four aspects: fiber morphology, antibacterial materials, antibacterial mechanism, and application fields. The effects of fiber morphology and antibacterial materials on the antibacterial activity and characteristics are first presented, then followed by a discussion of the antibacterial mechanisms and influencing factors of these materials. Typical application examples of antibacterial nanofibers are presented, which show the good prospects of electrospinning in the antibacterial field.

Bumpy structured nanofibrous membrane as a highly efficient air filter with antibacterial and antiviral property

Recently, the pandemic infectious diseases caused by coronavirus have prompted the development of air filter membranes to against infectious agents and protect human health. This research focuses on air filter membrane with antibacterial and antiviral property for high-efficiency particulate matter (PM) removal. Herein, polyamide-6 electrospun nanofibers were anchored with silver nanoparticles through hydrogen-bond. Bumpy nanorough surface and multilevel structure contribute to improve capture capacity, and silver nanoparticles provide a strong ability to inactivate bacteria and virus. In conclusion, this membrane exhibits high PM_2.5 filtration efficiency of 99.99% and low pressure drop of 31 Pa; simultaneous removal of multiple aerosol pollutants, e.g., SO_x, NO_x, methylbenzene, L-Nicotine; superior antibacterial performance against Escherichia coli (Gram negative bacteria) and Staphylococcus aureus (Gram positive bacteria), antiviral property against Porcine Deltacoronavirus and not significant cytotoxicity. Research of air filtration material is important to remove air pollutants and to prevent infection and spread of respiratory infectious diseases.

Electrospun Nanofiber Mats for Filtering Applications-Technology, Structure and Materials

Air pollution is one of the biggest health and environmental problems in the world and a huge threat to human health on a global scale. Due to the great impact of respiratory viral infections, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, lung cancer, asthma, bronchitis, emphysema, lung disease, and heart disease, respiratory allergies are increasing significantly every year. Because of the special properties of electrospun nanofiber mats, e.g., large surface-to-volume ratio and low basis weight, uniform size, and nanoporous structure, nanofiber mats are the preferred choice for use in large-scale air filtration applications. In this review, we summarize the significant studies on electrospun nanofiber mats for filtration applications, present the electrospinning technology, show the structure and mechanism of air filtration. In addition, an overview of current air filtration materials derived from bio- and synthetic polymers and blends is provided. Apart from this, the use of biopolymers in filtration applications is still relatively new and this field is still under-researched. The application areas of air filtration materials are discussed here and future prospects are summarized in conclusion. In order to develop new effective filtration materials, it is necessary to understand the interaction between technology, materials, and filtration mechanisms, and this study was intended to contribute to this effort.

Structural design toward functional materials by electrospinning: A review

Electrospinning as one of the most versatile technologies have attracted a lot of scientists’ interests in past decades due to its great diversity of fabricating nanofibers featuring high aspect ratio, large specific surface area, flexibility, structural abundance, and surface functionality. Remarkable progress has been made in terms of the versatile structures of electrospun fibers and great functionalities to enable a broad spectrum of applications. In this article, the electrospun fibers with different structures and their applications are reviewed. First, several kinds of electrospun fibers with different structures are presented. Then the applications of various structural electrospun fibers in different fields, including catalysis, drug release, batteries, and supercapacitors, are reviewed. Finally, the application prospect and main challenges of electrospun fibers are discussed. We hope that this review will provide readers with a comprehensive understanding of the structural design and applications of electrospun fibers in different fields.

Hybrid membrane with controllable surface microroughness by micro-nano structure processing for diluted PM2.5 capture

Tremendous efforts have been devoted by researchers on air particulate matter pollution for the increasing harm, however, the Air Pollution Index (API) from "good" to "excellent" is something hard to achieve. Here, halloysite nanotubes/polyvinyl alcohol (HNTs/PVA) hybrid membrane with surface micro-nano structure processing using a one-step method for efficient PM_2.5 capture was prepared. The filtration efficiency is 45.35% and the pressure drop is 41.57 Pa of composite membrane with a 60 wt% halloysite dosage. Specially, it resulted in a relatively safer PM index value of about 16.54, which tends to be more stringent than the restriction by Government of China (PM_2.5 < 35 μg/m³). The filtration performance was mainly attributed to the controllable microroughness surface as well as the hierarchical structure constructed by one-step method, which has a functional role in obstruction and adsorption for diluted PM_2.5. The methodology can employ halloysite onto various polymers, like polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), polyacrylonitrile (PAN) and also polycaprolactone (PCL) to yield hybrid membranes with the similar modification of surface and structure. Such versatile membrane filters can be purposely designed and scaled up, which endows the existing hybrid membrane with great potentials in both residential and public areas pollution control to achieve a healthier living environment.

Experimental and Computational Investigation of Intra- and Interlayer Space for Enhanced Depth Filtration and Reduced Pressure Drop

The buildup of pressure drop with mass loading of particles aggravates the breathing resistance and energy consumption of filters. This study investigated the role of intra- and interlayer space of filter media on the pressure drop development with continued particle loading. Five basic morphologies, including microfibers, nanofibers, microbeads-on-strings, and a mix of those morphologies were fabricated via electrospinning. Then the variations of layered constructions were made, to include a total 14 different filter structures. For a single layer filter media, the pore size rather than the percent porosity had a major impact on the pressure drop. For dual layers, the space between the layers and the placement order of webs were important factors affecting the pressure drop and depth loading of particles. Computational modeling was used to interpret the role of the interlayer space on the pressure drop, by monitoring the air flow and particle movement within the filter constructions, where the computational prediction corresponded to the tendency of the experimental findings. The novelty of this study lies in the combined approach of the experimental and computational work to understand the particle capture phenomenon during the mass loading.

Advanced Design of Fiber-Based Particulate Filters: Materials, Morphology, and Construction of Fibrous Assembly

With increasing air pollution and sporadic outbreaks of epidemics, there is ramping attention on the filtration devices. The main constituents of airborne pollutants are particulate matters of solid particles, liquid aerosol, bioaerosol/bio-droplets, and gas/vapor. With the growing demand for high-performance filters, novel materials and functionalities are being developed applying advanced technologies. In this paper, recent developments of fiber-based particulate filters are reviewed, with a focus on the important performance parameters and material properties. Trends in technology and research activities are briefly reviewed, and the evaluative measures of filtration performance are reported. Recent studies on the advanced filter materials are reviewed in the aspect of polymers and the fabrication process of fibrous assembly. The characterization method including 3D modeling and simulation is also briefly introduced. Multifunctional filters such as antimicrobial filter and gas and particulate filters are briefly introduced, and efforts for developing environmentally sustainable filters are noted.

Needle-disk Electrospinning: Mechanism Elucidation, Parameter Optimization and Productivity Improvement

BACKGROUND

Nanofiber's productivity plagues nanofibrous membranes' applications in many areas. Herein, we present the needle-disk electrospinning to improve throughput. In this method, multiple high-curvature mentals are used as the spinning electrode.

METHODS

Three aspects were investigated: 1) mechanism elucidation of the needle-disk electrospinning; 2) parameter optimization of the needle-disk electrospinning; 3) productivity improvement of the needle-disk electrospinning.

RESULTS

Results show that high-curvature electrode evokes high electric field intensity, making lower voltage supply in spinning process. The needle number, needle length and needle curvature synergistically affect the spinning process and nanofiber morphology. Additionally, higher disk rotation velocity and higher voltage supply can also result in higher nanofiber's productivity.

CONCLUSION

Compared with previous patents related to this topic, the needle-disk electrospinning is featured with the merits of high throughput, low voltage supply, controllable spinning process and nanofiber morphology, benefiting the nanofiber practical industrial employment and further applications of nanofiber-based materials.

Facile Functionalization via Plasma-Enhanced Chemical Vapor Deposition for the Effective Filtration of Oily Aerosol

With the growing concern about the health impacts associated with airborne particles, there is a pressing need to design an effective filter device. The objective of this study is to investigate the effect of plasma-based surface modifications on static charges of electrospun filter media and their resulting filtration performance. Polystyrene (PS) electrospun web (ES) had inherent static charges of ~3.7 kV due to its electric field-driven process, displaying effective filtration performance. When oxygen species were created on the surface by the oxygen plasma process, static charges of electret media decreased, deteriorating the filter performance. When the web surface was fluorinated by the plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD), the filtration efficiency against oily aerosol significantly increased due to the combined effect of decreased wettability and strong static charges (~-3.9 kV). Solid particles on the charged media formed dendrites as particles were attracted to other layers of particles, building up a pressure drop. The PECVD process is suggested as a facile functionalization method for effective filter design, particularly for capturing oily aerosol.

Surface Energy of Filtration Media Influencing the Filtration Performance against Solid Particles, Oily Aerosol, and Bacterial Aerosol

Particulate airborne pollutants are a big concern to public health, and it brings growing attention about effective filtration devices. Especially, particulate matters smaller than 2.5 µm can reach the thoracic region and the blood stream, and the associated health risk can be exacerbated when pathogenic microbials are present in the air. This study aims at understanding the surface characteristics of nonwoven media that influence filtration performance against solid particles (sodium chloride, NaCl), oily aerosol (dioctyl phthalate, DOP), and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) bacteria. Nonwoven media of polystyrene (PS) fibers were fabricated by electrospinning and its pristine surface energy (38.5 mN/m) was modified to decrease (12.3 mN/m) by the plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) of octafluorocyclobutane (C4F8) or to increase (68.5 mN/m) by the oxygen (O2) plasma treatment. For NaCl particles and S. aureus aerosol, PS electrospun web showed higher quality factor than polypropylene (PP) meltblown electret that is readily available for commercial products. The O2 plasma treatment of PS media significantly deteriorated the filtration efficiency, presumably due to the quick dissipation of static charges by the O2 plasma treatment. The C4F8 treated, fluorinated PS media resisted quick wetting of DOP, and its filtration efficiency for DOP and S. aureus remained similar while its efficiency for NaCl decreased. The findings of this study will impact on determining relevant surface treatments for effective particulate filtration. As this study examined the instantaneous performance within 1-2 min of particulate exposure, and the further study with the extended exposure is suggested.

Effective Formation of Well-Defined Polymeric Microfibers and Nanofibers with Exceptional Uniformity by Simple Mechanical Needle Spinning

The fabrication of nanofibers with a mechanical force has attracted increasing attention owing to its facile and easy fabrication. Herein, we demonstrate a novel and facile fabrication technique with the mechanical force, needle spinning, which utilizes a needle tip to draw a polymer solution to form fibrous structures. We studied the effect of the processing parameters to the nanofiber structure, namely, the pulling away speed, pulling away distances, needle size, and polymer concentration, which were systemically controlled. As the needle spinning provides an effective route to adjust those parameters, highly uniform nanofibers can be achieved. There are clear tendencies in the diameter; it was increased as the polymer concentration and needle size were increased, and was decreased as the pulling away distance and pulling away speed were increased. Needle spinning with a precise control of the processing parameter enables us to readily fabricate well-defined nanofibers, with controlled dimensions in diameter and length; plus, single nanofibers also can be easily formed. Those features cannot be realized in common spinning process such as electrospinning. Therefore, this technique will lead to further development of the use of mechanical force for nanofiber fabrication and will expand the range of nanofibers applications.
