The Genesis of a Critical Environmental Concern: Cannabinoids in Our Water Systems

Enzyme polymer engineered structure strategy to enhance cross-linked enzyme aggregate stability: a step forward in laccase exploitation for cannabidiol removal from wastewater

Despite all its advantages and potential, cross-linking enzyme aggregate (CLEA) technology is still not applied at an industrial scale for enzyme insolubilization for bioremediation purposes. In this study, the enzyme polymer engineered structure (EPES) method was used to enhance CLEA stability and reuse. A crude laccase from Trametes hirsuta was successfully insolubilized to form EPES-CLEAs. The polymeric network provided excellent stability (> 90%) to CLEAs after a 24-h incubation in a non-buffered municipal wastewater effluent (WW), and the biocatalysts were recycled using a centrifugation process. While CLEAs activity dropped to 17%, EPES-CLEAs showed a laccase activity retention of 67% after five cycles of 2,2'-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) oxidation. After 8 h of treatment in WW, the EPES-CLEAs were equally as effective in removing cannabidiol (CBD) as the free-LAC (~ 37%). This research demonstrates that the EPES method is a promising alternative for CLEA stabilization and reuse in environmental conditions.

A critical review on the detection, occurrence, fate, toxicity, and removal of cannabinoids in the water system and the environment

Cannabinoids are a group of organic compounds found in cannabis. Δ⁹-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD), the two major constituents of cannabinoids, and their metabolites are contaminants of emerging concern due to the limited information on their environmental impacts. As well, their releases to the water systems and environment are expected to increase due to recent legalization. Solid-phase extraction is the most common technique for the extraction and pre-concentration of cannabinoids in water samples as well as a clean-up step after the extraction of cannabinoids from solid samples. Liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry is the most common technique used for the analysis of cannabinoids. THC and its metabolites have been detected in wastewater, surface water, and drinking water. In particular, 11-nor-9-carboxy-Δ⁹-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC-COOH) has been detected at concentrations up to 2590 and 169 ng L^-1 in untreated and treated wastewater, respectively, 79.9 ng L^-1 in surface water, and 1 ng L^-1 in drinking water. High removal of cannabinoids has been observed in wastewater treatment plants; this is likely a result of adsorption due to the low aqueous solubility of cannabinoids. Based on the estrogenicity and cytotoxicity studies and modelling, it has been predicted that THC and THC-COOH pose moderate risk for adverse impact on the environment. While chlorination and photo-oxidation have been shown to be effective in the removal of THC-COOH, they also produce by-products that are potentially more toxic than regulated disinfection by-products. The potential of indirect exposure to cannabinoids and their metabolites through recreational water is of great interest. As cannabinoids and especially their by-products may have adverse impacts on the environment and public health, more studies on their occurrence in various types of water and environmental systems, as well as on their environmental toxicity, would be required to accurately assess their impact on the environment and public health.

Photocatalytic activity of micron-scale brass on emerging pollutant degradation in water: mechanism elucidation and removal efficacy assessment

Alloys or smelted metal mixtures have served as cornerstones of human civilization. The advent of smelted copper and tin, i.e., bronze, in the 4^th millennium B.C. in Mesopotamia has pioneered the preparation of other metal composites, such as brass (i.e., mixture of copper and zinc), since the bronze age. The contemporary use of these alloys has expanded beyond using their physical strength. The catalytic chemistry of micron-scale brass or copper–zinc alloy can be utilized to effectively degrade emerging contaminants (ECs) in water, which are presenting significant risks to human health and wildlife. Here, we examine the photocatalytic activity of a commercially available micro-copper–zinc alloy (KDF® 55, MicroCuZn), made with earth abundant metals, for oxidative removal of two ECs. The micron-scale brass is independently characterized for its morphology, which confirms that it has the β-brass phase and that its plasmonic response is around 475 nm. Estriol (E3), a well-known EC, is removed from water with ultraviolet (UV) radiation catalyzed by MicroCuZn and H₂O₂–MicroCuZn combinations. The synergy between H₂O₂, UV, and MicroCuZn enhances hydroxyl radical (˙OH) generation and exhibit a strong pseudo-first-order kinetic degradation of E3 with a decay constant of 1.853 × 10⁻³ min⁻¹ (r² = 0.999). Generation of ˙OH is monitored with N,N-dimethyl-4-nitrosoaniline (pNDA) and terephthalic acid (TA), which are effective ˙OH scavengers. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis has confirmed ZnO/CuO–Cu₂O film formation after UV irradiation. The second EC studied here is Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol or THC, a psychotropic compound commonly consumed through recreational or medicinal use of marijuana. The exceptionally high solids–water partitioning propensity of THC makes adsorption the dominant removal mechanism, with photocatalysis potentially supporting the removal efficacy of this compound. These results indicate that MicroCuZn can be a promising oxidative catalyst especially for degradation of ECs, with possible reusability of this historically significant material with environmentally-friendly attributes.

Micron-scale brass is a catalyst that can be activated with ultraviolet radiation to remove emerging contaminants from water via oxidation by hydroxyl radicals.

Pesticides and trace elements in cannabis: Analytical and environmental challenges and opportunities

Cannabis is increasingly used for both medicinal and recreational purposes with an estimate of over 180 million users annually. Canada has recently legalized cannabis use in October 2018, joining several states in the United States of America (e.g., Colorado, California, and Oregon) and a few other countries. A variety of cannabis products including dry flowers, edibles, and oil products are widely consumed. With high demand for cannabis products worldwide, the quality of cannabis and its related products has become a major concern for consumer safety. Various guidelines have been set by different countries to ensure the quality, safety, and efficacy of cannabis products. In general, these guidelines require control of contaminants including pesticides, toxic elements, mycotoxins, and pathogens, as well as residual solvents in regard to cannabis oil. Accordingly, appropriate analytical methods are required to determine these contaminants in cannabis products for quality control. In this review, we focus on the current analytical challenges and method development for detection of pesticides and toxic elements in cannabis to meet various guidelines.
