Hospital waste incinerator ash: characteristics, treatment techniques, and applications (A review)

The amount of medical waste generated has increased enormously since the COVID-19 outbreak. An incineration process is the main method that is usually used to treat this waste, causing an increase in both medical waste bottom ash (MWBA) and medical waste fly ash (MWFA). In this work, the physical and chemical characteristics of MWFA and MWBA were reviewed. This ash contains high levels of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxin (PCDD), dibenzofurans (PCDFs), and heavy metals. Furthermore, medical waste ash appears to have high leachability in the toxicity characteristics leaching procedure (TCLP) test and the European standard test (EN 12457). Owing to its toxicity, medical ash can be treated using various methods prior to disposal based on the covered review. These techniques include chemical, supercritical fluid, cement-based, melting, microwave, and mechanochemical techniques. The shortcomings of some of these treatment methods have been identified, such as the emission of high levels of chlorine from the melting technique, limited applications of the flotation method on the industrial scale, long-term stability of leachate treated by cement-based methods that have not been confirmed yet, and high energy consumption in the supercritical technique. This review also covers possible applications of medical waste ash in cement production, agriculture, and road construction.

Rapid Determination of Mercury Ions in Environmental Water Based on an N-Rich Covalent Organic Framework Potential Sensor

In this article, an N-rich covalent organic framework (COFTFPB-TZT) was successfully synthesized using 4,4′,4′-(1,3,5-triazine-2,4,6-triyl) trianiline (TZT), and 4-[3,5-bis (4-formyl-phenyl) phenyl] benzaldehyde (TFPB). The as-prepared COFTFPB-TZT possesses irregular cotton wool patches with a large specific surface area. A novel selective electrode based on COFTFPB-TZT was used for the determination of Mercury ions. The abundance of N atoms in COFTFPB-TZT provides more coordination sites for Hg2+ adsorption, resulting in a change in the surface membrane potential of the electrode to selectively recognize Hg2+. Under optimal experimental conditions, the ion-selective electrode shows a good potential response to Hg2+, with a linear range of 1.0 × 10−9∼1.0 × 10−4, a Nernst response slope of 30.32 ± 0.2 mV/-PC at 25°C and a detection limit of 4.5 pM. At the same time, the mercury-ion electrode shows a fast response time of 10 s and good reproducibility and stability. The selectivity coefficients for Fe2+, Zn2+, As3+, Cr6+, Cu2+, Cr3+, Al3+, Pb2+, NH4+, Ag+, Ba2+, Mg2+, Na+, and K+ are found to be small, indicating no interference in the detection system. The proposed method can be successfully applied to the determination of Hg2+ in 3 typical environmental water samples, with a recovery rate of 98.6–101.8%. In comparison with the spectrophotometric method utilizing dithizone, the proposed method is simple and fast and holds great potential application prospects in environmental water quality monitoring and other fields.

Investigation of Mechanochemically Treated Municipal Solid Waste Incineration Fly Ash as Replacement for Cement

Municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) fly ash has been classified as hazardous waste in China because of the leachable toxic heavy metals and high concentrations of chlorides and polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs). Currently, the main treatment method is still landfilling after chemical treatment or cement solidification, and an effective approach to realize fly ash utilization is still lacking. In the present work, the fly ash was firstly water-washed to remove the soluble chlorine salts, which can improve the performance of the produced cement mortar in later work. Mechanochemical pre-treatment was adopted to destroy the PCDD/Fs and improve the heavy metals’ stabilization. The results show that 75% of PCDD/Fs can be degraded and that most of the heavy metals are stabilized. After the mechanochemical pre-treatment, the average particle size of the fly ash decreases to 2–5 μm, which is beneficial for promoting the activation energy and accelerating the hydration process in cement mortar production. The compressive and flexural strengths of the fly ash cement mortar improve to 6.2 MPa and 32.4 MPa, respectively, when 35% of the OPC is replaced by treated fly ash. The similarity in the 3-day and 28-day strength with or without the addition of the treated ash shows the light influence of the fly ash addition. Thus, the mechanochemical process can stabilize the heavy metals and activate the fly ash, allowing it to partly substitute ordinary Portland cement in building materials, such as cement raw materials and concrete.
