Abstract
A unique fluorescent molecule (ND-S) was obtained from Eosin Y in two simple yet high yielding steps (1). ND-S has special metal ion sensing ability, such that it can selectively detect toxic Hg2+ present in very low concentration in aqueous solutions in the presence of other competing metal ions. The host-guest complexation is ratiometric and is associated with significant increase in fluorescence during the process. Isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) experiments provided thermodynamic parameters related to interaction between ND-S and Hg2+. Using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), the Hg2+(aq) removal efficiency of ND-S was estimated to be 99.88%. Appreciable limit of detection (LOD = 7.4 nM) was observed. Other competing ions did not interfere with the sensing of Hg2+ by ND-S. The effects of external stimuli (temperature and pH) were studied. Besides, the complex (ND-M), formed by 1:1 coordination of ND-S and Hg2+ was found to be effective against the survival of Gram-positive bacteria (S. aureus and B. subtilis) with a high selectivity index. Moreover, bacterial cell death mechanism was studied systematically. Overall, we have shown the transformation of a toxic species (Hg2+), extracted from polluted water by a biocompatible sensor (ND-S), into an effective and potent antibacterial agent (ND-M).

Abstract
As one of the most toxic metals, Mercury ions cause serious environmental pollution and threaten the health of living organisms. Hence, we designed and synthesised a new near-infrared (NIR) ratiometric fluorescent probe toward monitoring of Hg2+ based on quinoline-fused rhodamine dye. Owing to the specific spirolactam ring-opening reaction, the probe exhibits a ratiometric fluorescent change after treatment of Hg2+ with increased emission in NIR and significantly reduced emission in visible region. The specific response mechanism and dual-channel fluorescence change allow the probe to have remarkable detection selectivity, fast response and high detection sensitivity. Moreover, with the properties of excellent cell permeability and low cytotoxicity, probe can be applied as detection tool for mercury ions with dual-channel ratiometric fluorescence imaging in living cell.

Abstract
To develop efficient tools for monitoring toxicant Hg2+ in aqueous solution attracts great attention because the abnormal distribution of Hg2+ in environment poses great threat to human health. We here report the preparation of a novel quinoline-rhodamine hybrid fluorescent probe P7RHg for ratiometricly sensing of Hg2+ in water, with a spirolactam-thiosemicarbazide reaction group. Upon treatment by Hg2+, the ratio of fluorescence intensity (F600/F460) exhibits nearly 90-fold enhancement, presenting two well-resolved emission peaks (140 nm). Meanwhile, the specific Hg2+-induced desulfurization provides probe P7RHg an excellent selectivity to Hg2+, with a detection limit of 8.6 nM. Moreover, the low cytotoxicity allows P7RHg to be employed for tracing Hg2+ in living cells by confocal fluorescence imaging.

Abstract
Three fluorescent glycosyl-rhodamine probes with good selectivity and sensitivity toward Hg2+ were developed. The detection limit of the probes toward Hg2+ is as low as 94.6 nM, which can be used to detect trace Hg2+ in solution. 1 : 1 stoichiometry was the most possible recognition mode of the probes toward Hg2+, and the OFF/ON mechanism of the probes toward Hg2+ could be attributed to the closing or opening of the rhodamine spiral structure caused by Hg2+. The detection of Hg2+ is reversible, which is beneficial for the recycling of probes. Moreover, these low cytotoxic probes can be safely and selectively applied to monitor Hg2+ levels in hepatocytes, and the fluorescence response follows a trend of Rho-Gal > Rho-Lac > Rho-Glu in HepG2 cells because the galactose group in Rho-Gal can selectively recognize ASGPR overexpressed on HepG2 cells.

Abstract
A novel fluorescent probe L with a rhodamine B lactam structure modified with 3-methyl-2-thiophenecarboxaldehyde has been prepared based on the thiophilicity of Hg2+. The probe L exhibits a unique response with an “off–on-type” mode towards Hg2+ among other biologically relevant metal cations. The limit of detection (LOD) for probe L is 1.5 ppb. In addition, in the presence of Hg2+, the probe L shows a colorimetric response from colorless to pink. The recognition behavior of probe L towards Hg2+ has been investigated by 1H NMR titration experiments, Job's plot, and MS and IR analyses. As a result, the ligation between the probe and Hg2+ leads to the scission of the spirolactam bond of free L and the restoration of its conjugated structure, which can give rise to the fluorescence enhancement of the probe L. Besides, it also can be used as a sensitivity probe in living cells for Hg2+ sensing, which can meet various needs in genetic and environmental samples. A novel colorimetric fluorescent probe with low detection limits has been designed and synthesized, which shows an unique response for Hg2+ in living cells.![]()

Abstract
A novel dicyanoisophorone-based red-emissive fluorescence probe (YT) with large Stokes shift (230 nm) was synthesized for rapid (<20 s) and selective detection of hypochlorite ions in nearly 100% aqueous medium. YT responded to hypochlorite ions via the ClO--promoted oxidative deprotection of thioacetal, leading to a red shift in its fluorescence maximum from 590 nm to 640 nm accompanied by naked-eye color change from orange to red. The emission response of the probe toward ClO- presented a good linear relationship in the 5-160 μM concentration range, with the LOD of 4.64 μM. Further, the probe YT was successfully employed in exogenous and LPS-induced endogenous imaging of ClO- in live cells and zebrafish, demonstrating its potential applications in biological science.

Abstract
A new fluorescence probe based on [5]helicene derivative (MT) was designed and synthesized. The chemical structure of the probe was fully characterized by NMR, mass spectrometry and X-ray crystallography. MT which is the combination of thioamide[5]helicene with Schiff base-thiophene moiety, exhibited a high selectivity to detect Hg2+ through irreversible desulfurization reaction with "TurnON" fluorescence response and large Stokes shift of 110 nm in aqueous methanol solution. The detection limit of MT was 1.2 ppb (6.0 × 10-3 µM), which is lower than the limit of Hg2+ level in drinking water, as specified by WHO (6.0 ppb) and U.S. EPA (2.0 ppb). The Hg2+ detection range of the probe was 0.07-1.6 µM with good linearity. Under UV irradiation, MT possessed the capability to detect Hg2+ in diverse context of real samples, including drinking and sea waters, vegetable tissue and brain tumor cell. In addition, MT could be used as a paper test strip for monitoring and screening of Hg2+ contamination in environment.

Abstract
Mercury has complex biological toxicity and can cause a variety of physiological diseases and even death, so it is of great importance to develop novel strategies for detecting trace mercury in environmental and biological samples. In this work, we designed a new coumarin-based colorimetric and fluorescent probe CNS, which could be obtained from inexpensive starting materials with high overall yield in three steps. Probe CNS could selectively respond to Hg2+ with obvious color and fluorescence changes, and the presence of other metal ions had no effect on the fluorescence changes. Probe CNS also exhibited high sensitivity against Hg2+, with a detection limit as low as 2.78 × 10-8 M. More importantly, the behavioral tracks of zebrafish had no obvious changes upon treatment with 10 μM probe CNS, thus indicating its low toxicity. The probe showed potential application value and was successfully used for detecting Hg2+ in a test strip, HeLa cells and living zebrafish larvae.

Abstract
Mercury(II) ions (Hg2+) and silver ions (Ag+) are two of the most hazardous pollutants causing serious damage to human health. Here, we constructed surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS)-active nanofibers covered with 4-mercaptopyridine (4-Mpy)-modified gold nanoparticles to detect Hg2+ and Ag+. Experimental evidence suggests that the observed spectral changes originate from the combined effect of (i) the coordination between the nitrogen on 4-Mpy and the metal ions and (ii) the 4-Mpy molecular orientation (from flatter to more perpendicular with respect to the metal surface). The relative intensity of a pair of characteristic Raman peaks (at ∼428 and ∼708 cm-1) was used to quantify the metal ion concentration, greatly increasing the reproducibility of the measurement compared to signal-on or signal-off detection based on a single SERS peak. The detection limit of this method for Hg2+ is lower than that for the Ag+ (5 vs 100 nM), which can be explained by the stronger interaction energy between Hg2+ and N compared to Ag+ and N, as demonstrated by density functional theory calculations. The Hg2+ and Ag+ ions can be masked by adding ethylenediaminetetraacetate and Cl-, respectively, to the Hg2+ and Ag+ samples. The good sensitivity, high reproducibility, and excellent selectivity of these nanosensors were also demonstrated. Furthermore, detection of Hg2+ in living breast cancer cells at the subcellular level is possible, thanks to the nanometric size of the herein described SERS nanosensors, allowing high spatial resolution and minimal cell damage.

Abstract
Mercury, as a highly toxic heavy metal, can cause very serious harm to human health and even death in severe cases. Therefore, we synthesized a novel ratiometric fluorescent probe for detecting mercury ions, with mercaptoethanol as the recognition receptor. Probe CMER could determine mercury ions in 0-1.6 μM and the detection limit is 7.6 nM. Moreover, CMER manifested a fast response for Hg2+ (within 5 s) and simultaneously observed that the color changed from light yellow to orange by naked eye. In addition to these preeminent spectral properties, the probe also had satisfactory bioimaging results in RAW 264.7 macrophage cells and zebrafish.

Abstract
A rhodamine B-based sensor (RS) was designed and synthesized by a combination of the spirolacton rhodamine B (fluorophore) and multidentate chelates (ionophore) with high affinity towards Hg2+. In the presence of Hg2+, the resulting red-orange fluorescence (under UV light) and naked eye red color of RS are supposed to be used for quantitative and qualitative measurement of Hg2+. Further fluorescent titration and analysis demonstrate that RS can selectively detect Hg2+ within 1 s with a low limit of detection (LOD) of 16 nM in acetonitrile media, meanwhile, the association constant (Ka) was calculated to be 0.32 × 105 M-1. More importantly, the resultant complex (RSHg) of RS and Hg2+ has also been successfully applied to detect limited water content in acetonitrile solution.

Abstract
A commercial cyanine dye IR-780 and a thioether-containing dicarboxylic acid ligand were used to construct the near-infrared fluorescent probe, which was used as a near-infrared fluorescent indicator for the determination of mercury ions in water and in living cells. This indicator displayed high specificity towards Hg2+ without any interference from other detecting species. Especially, the emission at 790 nm dramatically increased more than 25 times after interacting with Hg2+. The binding experiment showed that the indicator formed 1:1 complex with Hg2+. More, this indicator could be applied in the visualization of Hg2+ in living cells and measuring the Hg2+ concentration of tap-water sample.

Abstract
Azulene is a bicyclic aromatic chromophore that absorbs in the visible region. Its absorption maximum undergoes a hypsochromic shift if a conjugated electron-withdrawing group is introduced at the C1 position. This fact can be exploited in the design of a colorimetric chemodosimeter that functions by the transformation of a dithioacetal to the corresponding aldehyde upon exposure to Hg2+ ions. This chemodosimeter exhibits good chemoselectivity over other metal cations, and responds with an unambiguous colour change clearly visible to the naked eye. Its synthesis is concise and its ease of use makes it appropriate in resource-constrained environments, for example in determing mercury content of drinking water sources in the developing world.

Abstract
Mercury (Hg) is a heavy metal with high toxicity and easy migration; it can be enriched through the food chain, and cause serious threats to the natural environment and human health. So, the development of a method that can be used to detect mercury ions (Hg2+ ) in the environment, in cells, and in organisms is very important. Here, a new 7-hydroxycoumarin-derived carbonothioate-based probe (CC-Hg) was designed and synthesized for detection of Hg2+ . After addition of Hg2+ , a large fluorescence enhancement was observed due to the formation of 7-hydroxyl, which reinforced the intramolecular charge transfer process. The CC-Hg probe had good water solubility and selectivity. Moreover, the probe was able to detect Hg2+ quantitatively over the concentration range 0-2 μM and with a detection limit of 7.9 nM. Importantly, we successfully applied the probe to detect Hg2+ in water samples, in living cells, and in zebrafish. The experimental results demonstrated its potential value in practical applications.

Abstract
An excellent spectral sensor for Hg2+ named 2-(2-((2-aminoethyl)thio)ethyl)-3',6'-bis(diethylamino)spiro[isoindoline-1,9'-xanthen]-3-one (RMTE) was achieved by a one-step reaction between rhodamine B and thiobisethylamine. RMTE could detect Hg2+ in nearly pure water reversibly and highly selectively, indicated by a new increasing absorption peak at 561 nm and 170-fold enhanced fluorescence at 578 nm coupled with remarkable visual and fluorescence color changes. When the Hg2+ concentration ([Hg2+]) varied from 0 to 120 μM, the absorbance and fluorescence intensity of the RMTE solution responded linearly to [Hg2+] with the detection limits of 2.08 and 0.14 μM, respectively. RMTE could work in ecologically and biologically favorable pH values of 6.41-8.33. The binding mode of RMTE toward Hg2+ was 1 : 1. RMTE could monitor Hg2+ in environmental water and living cells effectively with low cytotoxicity.
