New Chemistry for Mixed Matrix Membranes: Growth of Continuous Multilayer UiO-66-NH2 on UiO-66-NH2-Based Polyacrylonitrile for Highly Efficient Separations

High-selectivity turn-on fluorescence-based fluoride ion detection using histidine-functionalized UiO-66-NH2

Hisditine-functionalized UiO-66-NH2 (UiO-66-NH2@Hst) as a novel "turn-on" fluorescent probe to detect fluoride ions has been successfully synthesized using the solvothermal method. The results showed that fluoride ion detection gave the best fluorescence response in water media and no response was observed in non-polar solvents. Detection at pH 3-10 produces a relatively similar fluorescence response and decreases quite significantly at pH 11-13. UiO-66-NH2@Hst is very selective and stable towards fluoride ions as evidenced by the appearance of blue luminescence under UV light (λ 365 nm) compared to other ions. A possible mechanism for detecting fluoride ions is through the formation of hydrogen bonds, which results in incremental electron transfer from organic ligands to Zr-oxo clusters. The LoD value obtained in this study was 0.013 ppm, which is smaller than the maximum concentration of fluoride ions in drinking water samples (1.5 ppm) set by the World Health Organization (WHO). Therefore, UiO-66-NH2@Hst can be a candidate fluorescence-based sensor for fluoride ions.

Nitrogen-rich and core-sheath polyamide/polyethyleneimine@Zr-MOF for iodine adsorption and nerve agent simulant degradation

Radioactive nuclides and highly toxic organophosphates are typical deadly threats. Materials with the function of radioactive substances adsorption and organophosphates degradation provide double protection. Herein, dual-functional polyamide (PA)/polyethyleneimine (PEI)@Zr-MOF fiber composite membranes, fabricated by in-situ solvothermal growth of Zr-MOF on PA/PEI electrospun fiber membranes, are designed for protection against two typical model compounds of iodine and dimethyl 4-nitrophenyl phosphate (DMNP). Benefiting from the unique core-sheath structure composed of inner nitrogen-rich fibers and outer porous Zr-MOF, the composite membranes rapidly enrich iodine through abundant active sites of the outer sheath and form complexes with the amine of inner PEI, exhibiting a highly competitive adsorption capacity of 609 mg g-1. Moreover, it can adsorb and degrade DMNP with the synergy of PEI component and Zr-MOF, achieving an 80 % removal of DMNP within 7 min without any additional co-catalyst. This work provides a feasible strategy to fabricate dual-functional materials that protect against radioactive and organophosphorus contaminants.

In Situ Synthesis of NH2-MIL-53-Al/PAN Nanofibers for Removal Co(II) through an Electrospinning Process

In this study, researchers developed a novel composite material called NH2-MIL-53-Al/PAN, which consists of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) grown on electrospun PAN nanofibers (NFs). The successful formation of the composite was confirmed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), and the hydrophilicity of NH2-MIL-53-Al/PAN was demonstrated by the water contact angle (WCA). Batch experiments were conducted to investigate the adsorption performance of Co(II) under different conditions. The maximum adsorption capacity reached 58.72 mg/g, and almost 95% of the adsorption was achieved within the first 6 h. The adsorption process was found to be spontaneous and endothermic and followed the pseudo-second-order kinetics and Langmuir models. Chemisorption and molecular layer adsorption are the main mechanisms of adsorption, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis further reveals that the interaction between the adsorbent and cobalt is a coordination interaction. In this study, NH2-MIL-53-Al was grown in situ on PAN to ensure effective loading of MOFs and prevent agglomeration during the NF mixing process. This approach successfully addressed the challenge of exposing active sites within the embedded MOF crystals. Additionally, it overcame the difficulty of recycling traditional MOF adsorbents. As a result, the exceptional performance of MOF NFs offers a promising solution for the efficient removal of cobalt-containing wastewater.

Synchronous fluorescence detection of nitrite in meat products based on dual-emitting dye@MOF and its portable hydrogel test kit

A novel ratiometric fluorescent nanoprobe (Rh6G@UIO-66-NH2) was fabricated for efficient nitrite (NO2-) detection in the present study. When NO2- was introduced, it interacted with the amino groups on the surface of Rh6G@UIO-66-NH2, forming diazonium salts that led to the quenching of blue fluorescence. With this strategy, a good linear relationship between NO2- concentration and the fluorescent intensity ratio of the nanoprobe in the range of 1-100 μM was established, with a detection limit of 0.021 μM. This dual-readout nanosensor was applied to analyze the concentration of NO2- in real meat samples, achieving satisfactory recovery rates of 94.72-104.52%, highlighting the practical potential of this method. Furthermore, a portable Gel/Rh6G@UIO-66-NH2 hydrogel test kit was constructed for on-spot dual-mode detection of NO2-. This kit allows for convenient colorimetric analysis and fluorometric detection when used in conjunction with a smartphone. All the photos taken with the portable kit was converted into digital information using ImageJ software. It provides colorimetric and fluorescent visual detection of NO2- over a range of 0.1-1.5 mM, achieving a direct quantitative tool for NO2- identification. This methodology presents a promising strategy for NO2- detection and expands the application prospects for on-spot monitoring of food safety assessment.

Construction of a molecularly imprinted fluorescent sensor based on an amphiphilic block copolymer-metal-organic framework for the detection of oxytetracycline in milk

A metal-organic framework (MOF) is a good carrier for molecular imprinting due to its high surface area and strong adsorption capacity, but its poor dispersibility in aqueous solution is one of the significant drawbacks, which can severely impede its effectiveness. Amphiphilic block copolymers are good hydrophilic materials and have the potential to overcome the shortcomings of MOFs. In order to improve the hydrophilicity of molecularly imprinted fluorescent materials, we have applied a combination of molecularly imprinted technology and amphiphilic block copolymers on MOFs for the first time. Amphiphilic PAVE copolymer is selected as the molecular imprinted functional monomer to improve the hydrophilicity of UiO-66-NH2. The synthesized PAVE-MOF-MIP has adequate water dispersion ability and fluorescence activity. When encountering oxytetracycline, PAVE-MOF-MIP will produce fluorescence quenching, it is used to construct a fluorescence detection platform for oxytetracycline detection. Compared with traditional MIP@MOF, PAVE-MOF-MIP has better water dispersion ability and detection accuracy. Under optimal conditions, the linear range of oxytetracycline detection is 10-100 μmol L-1, and the minimum limit of detection (LOD) is 86 nmol L-1. This paper proposes a novel approach to use amphiphilic block copolymers as molecularly imprinted monomers on MOFs, providing an innovative idea that has not been previously explored.

High Proton Conductivity of the UiO-66-NH2-SPES Composite Membrane Prepared by Covalent Cross-Linking

A sulfonated poly(ethersulfone) (SPES)-metal-organic framework (MOF) film with excellent proton conductivity was synthesized by anchoring UiO-66-NH₂ to the main chain of the aromatic polymer through the Hinsberg reaction. The chemical bond was formed between the amino group in MOFs and the -SO₂Cl group in chlorosulfonated poly(ethersulfones) to conduct protons in the proton channel of the membrane, making the membrane have excellent proton conductivity. UiO-66-NH₂ is successfully prepared as a result of the consistency of the experimental and simulated powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) patterns of MOFs. The existence of absorption peaks of characteristic functional groups in Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra proved the successful preparation of SPES, PES-SO₂Cl, and a composite film. The results of the AC impedance test indicate that the composite film with a 3% mass fraction has the best proton conductivity of 0.215 S·cm^-1, which is 6.2 times higher than that of the blended film without a chemical bond at 98% RH and 353 K. To our knowledge, there are rarely any reports on the preparation of a composite membrane by directly linking MOFs and the membrane matrix with chemical bonds. This work provides a good way to synthesize the highly conductive proton exchange film.

Lateral flow immunoassay based on polydopamine-coated metal-organic framework for the visual detection of enrofloxacin in milk

Herein, we report a new polydopamine (PDA)-coated metal-organic framework (MOF) as a label to improve the sensitivity of lateral flow immunoassay (LFIA). The MOF, UiO-66-NH₂, was synthesized via the hydrothermal method, and it exhibited the advantageous features of ordered pore structure, strong absorbance, and high specific surface area. Subsequently, UiO-66-NH₂ was coated with PDA to improve the antibody coupling effectivity and light absorption ability. The optical intensity and antibody coupling efficiency of UiO-66@PDA were superior to those of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). Under the optimum condition, the limit of detection and cutoff value of UiO-66@PDA-LFIA in detecting enrofloxacin were 0.045 and 1.0 ng/mL, respectively, which were lower than those of AuNPs-LFIA (0.095 and 5 ng/mL). The recoveries of UiO-66@PDA-LFIA in low-fat milk and whole milk were 85.6-107.4% and 79.3-115.5%, respectively, with coefficients of variation of 2.91-9.59% and 3.91-11.8%, respectively, as further confirmed by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. These results indicate that UiO-66@PDA can be used as a novel probe for LFIA development and applications. Graphical abstract.

Zirconium-Based MOFs and Their Biodegradable Polymer Composites for Controlled and Sustainable Delivery of Herbicides

Adsorption and controlled release of agrochemicals has been studied widely using different nanomaterials and a variety of formulations. However, the potential for application of high surface-area metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) for the controlled release of agrochemicals has not been thoroughly explored. Herein, we report controlled and sustainable release of a widely used herbicide (2-methyl-4-chlorophenoxyacetic acid, MCPA) via incorporation in a range of zirconium-based MOFs and their biodegradable polymer composites. Three Zr-based MOFs, viz., UiO-66, UiO-66-NH₂, and UiO-67 were loaded with MCPA either postsynthetically or in situ during synthesis of the MOFs. The MCPA-loaded MOFs were then incorporated into a biodegradable polycaprolactone (PCL) composite membrane. All three MOFs and their PCL composites were thoroughly characterized using FT-IR, TGA, SEM, PXRD, BET, and mass spectrometry. Release of MCPA from each of these MOFs and their PCL composites was then studied in both distilled water and in ethanol for up to 72 h using HPLC. The best performance for MCPA release was observed for the postsynthetically loaded MOFs, with PS-MCPA@UiO-66-NH₂ showing the highest MCPA concentrations in ethanol and water of 0.056 and 0.037 mg/mL, respectively. Enhanced release of MCPA was observed in distilled water when the MOFs were incorporated in PCL. The concentrations of herbicides in the release studies provide us with a range of inhibitory concentrations that can be utilized depending on the crop, making this class of composite materials a promising new route for future agricultural applications.

Recent progress in nanomaterial-functionalized membranes for removal of pollutants

Membrane technology has gained tremendous attention for removing pollutants from wastewater, mainly due to their affordable capital cost, miniature equipment size, low energy consumption, and high efficiency even for the pollutants present in lower concentrations. In this paper, we review the literature to summarize the progress of nanomaterial-modified membranes for wastewater treatment applications. Introduction of nanomaterial in the polymeric matrix influences membrane properties such as surface roughness, hydrophobicity, porosity, and fouling resistance. This review also covers the importance of functionalization strategies to prepare thin-film nanocomposite hybrid membranes and their effect on eliminating pollutants. Systematic discussion regarding the impact of the nanomaterials incorporated within membrane, toward the recovery of various pollutants such as metal ions, organic compounds, dyes, and microbes. Successful examples are provided to show the potential of nanomaterial-functionalized membranes for regeneration of wastewater. In the end, future prospects are discussed to develop nanomaterial-based membrane technology.

Defective MOFs-based electrocatalytic self-cleaning membrane for wastewater reclamation: Enhanced antibiotics removal, membrane fouling control and mechanisms

In order to resolve the poor antibiotics rejection and serious fouling of ultrafiltration (UF) membrane during municipal wastewater reclamation, a novel anodic membrane (defective UiO-66 (D-UiO-66)/Graphite/Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF)) with high pure water flux (596.1 L•h ^- 1•m ^- 2•bar^-1) was fabricated by incorporating defective zirconium based metal-organic framework (D-UiO-66) and conductive graphite particles into PVDF matrix and applied in the coupling of electro-oxidation and membrane filtration process. Compared to the other anodic membranes (i.e., Graphite/PVDF and UiO-66/Graphite/PVDF), D-UiO-66/Graphite/PVDF possesses superior anti-fouling and self-cleaning abilities (flux recovery=100%, model foulant: bovine serum albumin) in both intermittent and continuous supply of electric field under current density of 0.01 mA/cm²; moreover, efficient antibiotics (tetracycline, norfloxacin, tylosin and sulfamethoxazole) removal (> 96.6%) and bactericidal efficiency against E. coli and S. aureus (100%) were achieved simultaneously without the addition of chemical reagents due to the higher electrocatalytic activity of anodic membrane for oxidation of pollutants by •OH and •O₂^- free radicals. Three degradation pathways of antibiotics were proposed and the self-cleaning mechanism of membrane was dominated by the synergy of the partial mineralization and the reduced fouling potential of foulants after oxidation as revealed by the increase in hydrophilicity, and decrease in negative charge and molecular weight. The fabricated membrane also presents excellent electrochemical stability, separation and self-cleaning performance for treatment of municipal secondary effluent during long-term filtration with low electric energy consumption, which is promising in wastewater reclamation.

Applications of Metal-Organic Frameworks in Water Treatment: A Review

The ever-expanding scale of industry and agriculture has led to the gradual increase of pollutants (e.g., heavy metal ions, synthetic dyes, and antibiotics) in water resources, and the ecology and wastewater are grave problems that need to be solved urgently and has attracted widespread attention from the research community and industry in recent years. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a type of organic-inorganic hybrid material with a distinctive 3D network crystal structure. Lately, MOFs have made striking progress in the fields of adsorption, catalytic degradation, and biomedicine on account of their large specific surface and well-developed pore structure. This review summarizes the latest research achievements in the preparation of pristine MOFs, MOF composites, and MOF derivatives for various applications including the removal of heavy metal ions, organic dyes, and other harmful substances in sewage. Furthermore, the working mechanisms of utilizing adsorption, photocatalytic degradation, and membrane separation technologies are also briefly described for specific pollutants removal from sewage. It is expected that this review will provide inspiration and references for the synthesis of pristine MOFs as well as their composites and derivatives with excellent water treatment performance.

Synthesis and evaluation of UiO-66@MIP towards norfloxacin in water

Norfloxacin (NOX), a kind of quinolone antibiotic, is widely used in disease treatment and the control of human and livestock products. Due to overuse, norfloxacin has become a common organic pollutant in water. We combine the high specific surface area and high stability of metal–organic frameworks with the high selectivity of molecularly imprinted polymers. By grafting a carbon–carbon double bond on the surface of UiO-66–NH₂, a molecularly imprinted layer is formed on the surface of UiO-66–NH₂ upon free radical polymerization. The saturated adsorption capacity of UiO-66@MIP reaches 58.01 mg g⁻¹. UiO-66@MIP exhibits high adsorption performance in real water samples and its recoveries range from 96.7% to 98.3%, which demonstrates a higher adsorption capacity and recovery than other molecularly imprinted materials and has potential applications in the removal of norfloxacin in real life.

In this study, UiO-66@MIP was synthesized to remove NOX. The ability of UiO-66@MIP to adsorb norfloxacin in actual wastewater was also explored.

High-Quality Thin Films of UiO-66-NH2 by Coordination Modulated Layer-by-Layer Liquid Phase Epitaxy

We report the fabrication of macroscopically and microscopically homogeneous, crack-free metal-organic framework (MOF) UiO-66-NH2 (UiO: Universitetet i Oslo; [Zr6 O4 (OH)4 (bdc-NH2 )6 ]; bdc-NH2 2- : 2-amino-1,4-benzene dicarboxylate) thin films on silicon oxide surfaces. A DMF-free, low-temperature coordination modulated (CM), layer-by-layer liquid phase epitaxy (LPE) using the controlled secondary building block approach (CSA). Efficient substrate activation was determined as a key factor to obtain dense and smooth coatings by comparing UiO-66-NH2 thin films grown on ozone and piranha acid-activated substrates. Films of 2.60 μm thickness with a minimal surface roughness of 2 nm and a high sorption capacity of 3.53 mmol g-1 MeOH (at 25 °C) were typically obtained in an 80-cycle experiment at mild conditions (70 °C, ambient pressure).

Boronate affinity imprinted hydrogel sorbent from biphasic synergistic high internal phase emulsions reactor for specific enrichment of Luteolin

The dynamic coexistence of heterostructures is crucial for the synergistic function of molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) derived from high internal phase emulsions (HIPEs). In this work, hydrophilic boronate affinity imprinted hydrogel sorbents (H-UIO-66-NH₂-IHIPEs) were prepared by biphasic synergistic HIPEs droplet reactors filled with reactive microencapsulation system, and used to capture and separate cis-diol containing luteolin (LTL) from complex extraction samples with high selectivity. As the main solid emulsifier, UiO-66-NH₂, prototype zirconium-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) greatly improves the mechanical performance of the hydrogel, whilst preventing overuse of surfactants. Space-confined formation of imprinted sites in the external phase is realized in the presence of hydrophilic acrylamide phenylboric acid monomer (H-BA), which endows the specific affinity with pH responsiveness to LTL. In addition, the filled microinclusion compound containing elastic monomer octadecyl methacrylate (SMA) and functional monomer glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) simultaneously added interfacial cross-linking reaction to provide stable pore volume and pore shape. Combined with these excellent properties, H-UIO-66-NH₂-IHIPEs showed fast capture kinetics (75 min) and large uptake amount (39.77 mg g^-1) at 298 K, and confirmed the existence of a uniform chemisorption monolayer. Moreover, excellent recyclability of 6.24% loss in adsorption amount after five adsorption-desorption cycles was observed. Finally, the LTL content of the purified product (about 97.38%) was higher than that of the crude extract (about 85.0%). This study sheds a new light for the design of novel imprinted hydrogel sorbents combined with binary synergistic components.

Incorporation of lanthanum particles to polyethersulfone ultrafiltration membrane for specific phosphorus uptake: Method comparison and performance assessment

It is known that phosphorus is a major contributor to the occurrence of eutrophication. As such, it is of importance to remove it from water. Nanofiltration (NF) has low phosphorus selectivity and requires a relatively high pressure to achieve the separation, though it is capable of removing phosphorus. In this paper, we report our findings of method development on fabrication and application of a lanthanum (La)-incorporated polyethersulfone (PES)/sulfonated polyphenylenesulfone membrane for phosphorus treatment. The performances of membranes fabricated by the in situ and ex situ methods were examined in a series of batch adsorption and dead-end filtration experiments. The membrane fabricated by the in situ method demonstrated higher adsorption capacity (48.0 mg/g), faster kinetics (equilibrium in 6 h) and higher water permeance (>100 LMH/bar), which outperformed that by the ex situ method. Furthermore, the PES/La (in situ) membrane showed a comparable phosphate removal with a much higher permeance (about 20 times) than the NF90 (a nanofiltration commercial membrane). Moreover, the multiple cycles of filtration study showed that the membrane was reused satisfactorily in treating low-phosphate contaminated water and meeting the stringent phosphate standard limit of 0.15 mg/L. The removal of phosphate by the membranes was attributed to the mechanisms of ion exchange and electrostatic attraction/complexation. The study reported here provides a better approach in fabrication of functionalized membrane for water treatment, such as phosphate removal in either batch adsorption or membrane filtration process.
