EXAFS Study on the Coordination Chemistry of the Solvated Copper(II) Ion in a Series of Oxygen Donor Solvents

In Situ Study of the Activation Process of MOF-74 Using Three-Dimensional Electron Diffraction

Metal-organic framework (MOF)-74 is known for its effectiveness in selectively capturing carbon dioxide (CO2). Especially the Zn and Cu versions of MOF-74 show high efficiency of this material for CO2. However, the activation of this MOF, which is a crucial step for its utilization, is so far not well understood. Here, we are closing the knowledge gap by examining the activation using, for the first time in the MOF, three-dimensional electron diffraction (3DED) during in situ heating. The use of state-of-the-art direct electron detectors enables rapid acquisition and minimal exposure times, therefore minimizing beam damage to the very electron beam-sensitive MOF material. The activation process of Zn-MOF-74 and Cu-MOF-74 is systematically studied in situ, proving the creation of open metal sites. Differences in thermal stability between Zn-MOF-74 and Cu-MOF-74 are attributed to the strength of the metal-oxygen bonds and Jahn-Teller distortions. In the case of Zn-MOF-74, we observe previously unknown remaining electrostatic potentials inside the MOF pores, which indicate the presence of remaining atoms that might impede gas flow throughout the structure when using the MOF for absorption purposes. We believe our study exemplifies the significance of employing advanced characterization techniques to enhance our material understanding, which is a crucial step for unlocking the full potential of MOFs in various applications.

Understanding the relationship between pore size, surface charge density, and Cu2+ adsorption in mesoporous silica

This research delved into the influence of mesoporous silica's surface charge density on the adsorption of Cu2+. The synthesis of mesoporous silica employed the hydrothermal method, with pore size controlled by varying the length of trimethylammonium bromide (CnTAB, n = 12, 14, 16) chains. Gas adsorption techniques and transmission electron microscopy characterized the mesoporous silica structure. Surface charge densities of the mesoporous silica were determined through potentiometric titration, while surface hydroxyl densities were assessed using the thermogravimetric method. Subsequently, batch adsorption experiments were conducted to study the adsorption of Cu2+ in mesoporous silica, and the process was comprehensively analyzed using Atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), and L3 edge X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES). The research findings suggest a positive correlation between the pore size of mesoporous silica, its surface charge density, and the adsorption capacity for Cu2+. More specifically, as the pore size increases within the 3-4.1 nm range, the surface charge density and the adsorption capacity for Cu2+ also increase. Our findings provide valuable insights into the relationship between the physicochemical properties of mesoporous silica and the adsorption behavior of Cu2+, offering potential applications in areas such as environmental remediation and catalysis.

Theoretical insights into the adsorption and gas sensing performance of Fe/Cu-adsorbed graphene

The binding mechanism of gas molecules on material surfaces is essential for understanding adsorption and sensing performance. In the present study, we examine the interaction of some volatile organic compounds (VOCs), including HCHO, C2H5OH, and CH3COCH3, on pristine graphene and its Fe/Cu-adsorbed surfaces using first-principles calculations. The results indicate that the adsorption of these molecules on graphene is regarded as physisorption, while chemisorption is observed for Fe/Cu attached surfaces. The binding of sites on molecules and surfaces primarily involves hydrogen bonds for the pure form of graphene. In contrast, stable interactions occur at functional groups such as >CO, -OH with Fe/Cu atoms, as well as CC bonds of π-rings on modified structures of graphene. It is noticeable that stronger adsorption is observed in the case of Fe addition (Gr-Fe) compared to Cu (Gr-Cu), enhancing the gas adsorption and sensing performance on graphene. Remarkably, the graphene surfaces supported by Fe and Cu improved selectivity in detecting VOC molecules, particularly C2H5OH and CH3COCH3 for Gr-Fe, and HCHO for Gr-Cu. Quantum chemical analyses reveal that the Fe/Cu⋯O/C contacts are covalent interactions, contributing significantly to the stability of configurations and sensing properties of Fe/Cu-adsorbed graphene. In summary, the observed improvements in selectivity, enhanced adsorption strength, and the identification of crucial interactions at the surface offer valuable insights into designing highly efficient gas sensors and developing advanced sensing materials.

Fingerprint of Dipole Moment Orientation of Water Molecules in Cu2+ Aqueous Solution Probed by X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy

The electronic structure and geometrical organization of aqueous Cu2+ have been investigated by using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) at the Cu L-edge combined with state-of-the-art ab initio molecular dynamics and a quantum molecular approach designed to simulate the Cu 2p X-ray photoelectron spectrum. The calculations offer a comprehensive insight into the origin of the main peak and satellite features. It is illustrated how the energy drop of the Cu 3d levels (≈7 eV) following the creation of the Cu 2p core hole switches the nature of the highest singly occupied molecular orbitals (MOs) from the dominant metal to the dominant MO nature of water. It is particularly revealed how the repositioning of the Cu 3d levels induces the formation of new bonding (B) and antibonding (AB) orbitals, from which shakeup mechanisms toward the relaxed H-SOMO operate. As highlighted in this study, the appearance of the shoulder near the main peak corresponds to the characteristic signature of shakeup intraligand (1a1 → H-SOMO(1b1)) excitations in water, providing insights into the average dipole moment distribution (≈36°) of the first-shell water molecules surrounding the metal ion and its direct impact on the broadening of the satellite. It is also revealed that the main satellite at 8 eV from the main peak corresponds to (metal/1b2 → H-SOMO(1b1) of water) excitations due to a bonding/antibonding (B/AB) interaction of Cu 3d levels with the deepest valence O2p/H1s 1b2 orbitals of water. This finding underscores the sensitivity of XPS to the electronic structure and orientation of the nearest water molecules around the central ion.

Coordination chemistry effects of the space-demanding solvent molecule N,N'-dimethylpropyleneurea

Crystallographic investigations of eight homoleptic N,N'-dimethylpropyleneurea (dmpu) coordinated metal ions in the solid state, [Mg(dmpu)5]I2 (1), [Ca(dmpu)6]I2 (2), [Ca(dmpu)6](ClO4)2 (3), [Ca(dmpu)6](CF3SO3)2 (4), [Sr(dmpu)6](CF3SO3)2 (5), [Ba(dmpu)6](CF3SO3)2 (6), [Sc(dmpu)6]I3 (7), and [Pr(dmpu)6]I(I3)2 (8), and the complex [CoBr2(dmpu)2] (9) as well as the structures of the dmpu coordinated calcium, strontium, barium, scandium(III) and cobalt(II) ions and the cobalt(II) bromide complex in dmpu solution as determined by EXAFS are reported. The methyl groups in the dmpu molecule are close to the oxygen donor atom, causing steric restrictions, and making dmpu space-demanding at coordination to metal ions. The large volume required by the dmpu ligand at coordination contributes to crowdedness around the metal ion with often lower coordination numbers than for oxygen donor ligands without such steric restrictions. The crowdedness is seen in M⋯H distances equal to or close to the sum of the van der Waals radii. To counteract the space-demand at coordination, the dmpu molecule has an unusual ability to increase the M-O-C bond angle to facilitate as large coordination numbers as possible. M-O-C bond angles in the range of 125-170° are reported depending on the crowdedness caused by the coordination figure and the M-O bond distance. All reported structures of dmpu coordinated metal ions in both the solid state and dmpu solution are summarized to study the relationship between the M-O-C bond angle and the crowdedness around the metal ion. However, highly symmetric complexes seem to be favoured in the solid state due to favourable lattice energies. As a result, the dmpu coordinated lanthanoid(III) ions are octahedral in the solid state, while they, except lutetium, are seven-coordinate in the dmpu solution.

G0W0 Ionization Potentials of First-Row Transition Metal Aqua Ions

We report computations of the vertical ionization potentials within the GW approximation of the near-complete series of first-row transition metal (V-Cu) aqua ions in their most common oxidation states, i.e., V3+, Cr3+, Cr2+, Mn2+, Fe3+, Fe2+, Co2+, Ni2+, and Cu2+. The d-orbital occupancy of these systems spans a broad range from d2 to d9. All of the structures were first optimized at the density functional theory level using a large cluster of explicit water molecules that are embedded in a continuum solvation model. Vertical ionization potentials were computed with the one-shot G0W0 approach on a range of transition metal ion clusters (6, 18, 40, and 60 explicit water molecules), wherein the convergence with respect to the basis set size was evaluated using the systems with 40 water molecules. We assess the results using three different density functional approximations as starting points for the vertical ionization potential calculations, namely, G0W0@PBE, G0W0@PBE0, and G0W0@r2SCAN. While the predicted ground-state structures are similar to all three exchange-correlation functionals, the vertical ionization potentials were in closer agreement with experiment when using the G0W0@PBE0 and G0W0@r2SCAN approaches, with the r2SCAN-based calculations being significantly less expensive. Computed bond distances and vertical ionization potentials for all structures are in good agreement with available experimental data.

Hydroxytyrosol Counteracts Triple Negative Breast Cancer Cell Dissemination via Its Copper Complexing Properties

Polyphenols have gained increasing attention for their therapeutic potential, particularly in conditions like cancer, due to their established antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Recent research highlights their ability to bind to transition metals, such as copper. This is particularly noteworthy given the key role of copper both in the initiation and progression of cancer. Copper can modulate the activity of kinases required for the epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT), a process fundamental to tumor cell dissemination. We have previously demonstrated the copper-binding capacity of oleuropein, a secoiridoid found in Olea europaea. In the present study, we investigated the effect of hydroxytyrosol, the primary oleuropein metabolite, on the metastatic potential of three triple-negative breast cancer cell lines (MDA-MB-231, MDA-MB-468, and SUM159). We found that hydroxytyrosol modulated the intracellular copper levels, influencing both the epithelial and mesenchymal markers, by downregulating copper-dependent AKT phosphorylation, a member of the EMT signaling cascade, through Western blot, RT-qPCR, and immunofluorescence. Indeed, by optical spectra, EPR, and in silico approaches, we found that hydroxytyrosol formed a complex with copper, acting as a chelating agent, thus regulating its homeostasis and affecting the copper-dependent signaling cascades. While our results bring to light the copper-chelating properties of hydroxytyrosol capable of countering tumor progression, they also provide further confirmation of the key role of copper in promoting the aggressiveness of triple-negative breast cancer cells.

Cu(II) assisted peroxymonosulfate for antibiotic resistant bacteria inactivation: A potential disinfection technology in swimming pool

Alternative disinfection technology to chlorination is required to control the risk of antibiotic resistance in swimming pools. In this study, copper ions (Cu(II)), which often exist in swimming pools as algicides, were used to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for the inactivation of ampicillin-resistant E. coli. Cu(II) and PMS showed synergistic effects on E. coli inactivation in weak alkaline conditions, obtaining 3.4 log inactivation in 20 min with 10 μM Cu(II) and 100 μM PMS at pH 8.0. Quenching experiments indicated that radicals (i.e., OH and SO₄^-) were not the main disinfectors for E. coli inactivation. Based on the structure of Cu(II) and density functional theory calculations, the Cu(II)-PMS complex (Cu(H₂O)₅SO₅) was recommended as the active species for E. coli inactivation. Under the experimental conditions, the PMS concentration had a greater influence on E. coli inactivation than the Cu(II) concentration, possibly because increasing PMS concentration accelerates ligand exchange reaction and facilitates active species generation. By forming hypohalous acids, halogen ions could improve the disinfection efficiency of Cu(II)/PMS. The addition of HCO₃^- concentration (from 0 to 1.0 mM) and humic acid (0.5 and 1.5 mg/l) did not significantly inhibit the E. coli inactivation. The feasibility of adding PMS to waters containing Cu(II) for the inactivation of antibiotic-resistant bacteria was validated in actual swimming pool waters, where 4.7 log inactivation of E. coli was achieved in 60 min.

Transformation of a copper-based metal-organic polyhedron into a mixed linker MOF for CO2 capture

A new mixed linker metal-organic framework (MOF) has been synthesized from a copper-based metal-organic polyhedron (MOP-1) and 2,2'-bipyridine (2,2'-bipy). The CuMOF-Bipy with a formula of [Cu₂(2,2'-bpy)₂(m-BDC)₂]_n is comprised of a binuclear Cu(II) node coordinated to 2,2'-bipy, and isophthalic acid (m-BDC), which bridges to neighboring nodes. The crystal structure of CuMOF-Bipy consists of a stacked two-dimensional framework with the sql topology. CuMOF-Bipy was characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SC-XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and CO₂ sorption. CuMOF-Bipy was shown to have one-dimensional sinusoidal channels that allow diffusion of CO₂ but not N₂.

Synthesis, Structure, and Antiproliferative Action of 2-Pyridyl Urea-Based Cu(II) Complexes

Relying on a recently suggested protocol that furnishes convenient access to variously substituted 2-pyridyl ureas, twelve hitherto unknown Cu(II) complexes have been synthesized in the present work and their structures were evaluated by elemental analysis, HRMS, IR spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction study. Two structural motifs ([Cu(L)2Cl]+[Cl]− or (Cu(L)2Cl2) depending on the substitution pattern on the 2-pyridine fragment were revealed. In addition, antiproliferative action of the obtained compounds have been investigated against lung cancer cell lines (A549, NCI-H460, NCI-H1975), and healthy WI-26 VA4 cells were used to monitor non-specific cytotoxicity. Two nitro-group substituted complexes Cu(U3)2Cl2 (IC50 = 39.6 ± 4.5 μM) and Cu(U11)2Cl2 (IC50 = 33.4 ± 3.8 μM) demonstrate enhanced activity against the drug resistant NCI-H1975 cells with moderate selectivity toward normal WI-26 VA4 cells. The antiproliferative mechanism of cell death underlying the growth inhibitory effect of the synthesized complexes was studied via additional experiments, including the cell cycle analysis and the apoptosis induction test. Reassuringly, certain 2-pyridyl urea-based Cu(II) complexes exerted cell line-specific antiproliferative effect which renders them valuable starting points for further unveiling the anticancer potential of this class of coordination compounds.

An Atomistic Model Describing the Structure and Morphology of Cu-Doped C-S-H Hardening Accelerator Nanoparticles

Calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H) is the main binding phase in Portland cement. The addition of C-S-H nanoparticles as nucleation seeds has successfully been used to accelerate the hydration process and the precipitation of binding phases either in conventional Portland cement or in alternative binders. Indeed, the modulation of the hydration kinetics during the early-stage dissolution-precipitation reactions, by acting on the nucleation and growth of binding phases, improves the early strength development. The fine-tuning of concrete properties in terms of compressive strength and durability by designed structural modifications can be achieved through the detailed description of the reaction products at the atomic scale. The nano-sized, chemically complex and structurally disordered nature of these phases hamper their thorough structural characterization. To this aim, we implement a novel multi-scale approach by combining forefront small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and synchrotron wide-angle X-ray total scattering (WAXTS) analyses for the characterization of Cu-doped C-S-H nanoparticles dispersed in a colloidal suspension, used as hardening accelerator. SAXS and WAXTS data were analyzed under a unified modeling approach by developing suitable atomistic models for C-S-H nanoparticles to be used to simulate the experimental X-ray scattering pattern through the Debye scattering equation. The optimization of atomistic models against the experimental pattern, together with complementary information on the structural local order from ²⁹Si solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance and X-ray absorption spectroscopy, provided a comprehensive description of the structure, size and morphology of C-S-H nanoparticles from the atomic to the nanometer scale. C-S-H nanoparticles were modeled as an assembly of layers composed of 7-fold coordinated Ca atoms and decorated by silicate dimers and chains. The structural layers are a few tens of nanometers in length and width, with a crystal structure resembling that of a defective tobermorite, but lacking any ordering between stacking layers.

Copper-coordinated cellulose ion conductors for solid-state batteries

Although solid-state lithium (Li)-metal batteries promise both high energy density and safety, existing solid ion conductors fail to satisfy the rigorous requirements of battery operations. Inorganic ion conductors allow fast ion transport, but their rigid and brittle nature prevents good interfacial contact with electrodes. Conversely, polymer ion conductors that are Li-metal-stable usually provide better interfacial compatibility and mechanical tolerance, but typically suffer from inferior ionic conductivity owing to the coupling of the ion transport with the motion of the polymer chains^1-3. Here we report a general strategy for achieving high-performance solid polymer ion conductors by engineering of molecular channels. Through the coordination of copper ions (Cu²⁺) with one-dimensional cellulose nanofibrils, we show that the opening of molecular channels within the normally ion-insulating cellulose enables rapid transport of Li⁺ ions along the polymer chains. In addition to high Li⁺ conductivity (1.5 × 10^-3 siemens per centimetre at room temperature along the molecular chain direction), the Cu²⁺-coordinated cellulose ion conductor also exhibits a high transference number (0.78, compared with 0.2-0.5 in other polymers²) and a wide window of electrochemical stability (0-4.5 volts) that can accommodate both the Li-metal anode and high-voltage cathodes. This one-dimensional ion conductor also allows ion percolation in thick LiFePO₄ solid-state cathodes for application in batteries with a high energy density. Furthermore, we have verified the universality of this molecular-channel engineering approach with other polymers and cations, achieving similarly high conductivities, with implications that could go beyond safe, high-performance solid-state batteries.

Symmetry Breaking in Solution-Phase [Cu(tsc)2(H2O)2]2+: Emergent Asymmetry in Cu-S Distances and in Covalence

The structure of aqueous Cu(II)-bis-thiosemicarbazide, [Cu(tsc)₂]²⁺, is reported following EXAFS and MXAN analyses of the copper K-edge X-ray absorption (XAS) spectrum. The rising K-edge feature at 8987.1 eV is higher energy than those of crystalline models, implying unique electronic and structural solution states. EXAFS analysis (k = 2-13 Å^-1; 2 × Cu-N = 2.02 ± 0.01 Å; 2 × Cu-S = 2.27 ± 0.01 Å; Cu-O_ax = 2.41 ± 0.04 Å) could not resolve 5- versus 6-coordinate models. However, MXAN fits converged to an asymmetric broken symmetry 6-coordinate model with cis-disposed TSC ligands (Cu-O_ax = 2.07 and 2.54 Å; Cu-N = 1.94 Å, 1.98 Å; Cu-S = 2.20 Å, 2.41 Å). Transition dipole integral evaluation of the sulfur K-edge XAS 1s → 3p valence transition feature at 2470.7 eV yielded a Cu-S covalence of 0.66 e^-, indicating Cu^1.34+. The high Cu-S covalence and short Cu-S bond in aqueous [Cu(tsc)₂(H₂O)₂]²⁺ again contradict the need for a protein rack to explain the unique structure of the blue copper active site. MXAN models of dissolved Cu(II) complex ions have invariably featured broken centrosymmetry. The potential energy ground state for dissolved Cu(II) evidently includes the extended solvation field, providing a target for improved physical theory. A revised solvation model for aqueous Cu(II), |[Cu(H₂O)₅]·14H₂O|²⁺, is presented.

Fabrication and characterisation of a silicon-borosilicate glass microfluidic device for synchrotron-based hard X-ray spectroscopy studies

Some of the most fundamental chemical building blocks of life on Earth are the metal elements. X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) is an element-specific technique that can analyse the local atomic and electronic structure of, for example, the active sites in catalysts and energy materials and allow the metal sites in biological samples to be identified and understood. A microfluidic device capable of withstanding the intense hard X-ray beams of a 4th generation synchrotron and harsh chemical sample conditions is presented in this work. The device is evaluated at the K-edges of iron and bromine and the L ₃-edge of lead, in both transmission and fluorescence mode detection and in a wide range of sample concentrations, as low as 0.001 M. The device is fabricated in silicon and glass with plasma etched microchannels defined in the silicon wafer before anodic bonding of the glass wafer into a complete device. The device is supported with a well-designed printed chip holder that made the microfluidic device portable and easy to handle. The chip holder plays a pivotal role in mounting the delicate microfluidic device on the beamline stage. Testing validated that the device was sufficiently robust to contain and flow through harsh acids and toxic samples. There was also no significant radiation damage to the device observed, despite focusing with intense X-ray beams for multiple hours. The quality of X-ray spectra collected is comparable to that from standard methods; hence we present a robust microfluidic device to analyse liquid samples using synchrotron XAS.

Structure prediction of neutral physiological copper(II) compounds with l-cysteine and l-histidine

Bis(aminoacidato)copper(II) [Cu^II(aa)₂] coordination compounds are the physiological species of copper(II) amino acid compounds in blood plasma. Since there are no experimental data in the literature about the geometries that physiological Cu^II(aa)₂ could form with l-cysteine (Cys), that is, for bis(l-cysteinato)copper(II) [Cu(Cys)₂] and the ternary (l-histidinato)(l-cysteinato)copper(II) [Cu(His)(Cys)], this paper computationally examines the possible conformations that the two compounds could form with the Cys ligand having a protonated sulfur, as in the conventional zwitterion, which was determined to be prevailing in aqueous solution. These two amino acids can bind metals in a tridentate fashion and thus form many possible coordination patterns. Density functional calculations were performed for the conformational analyses in the gas phase and in implicitly modeled aqueous solution using a polarizable continuum model. Additionally, we examine which coordination mode, with thiol or thiolate group, is more stable. The Cys coordination via the amino N and carboxylato O atoms (a glycinato mode) is obtained as the most stable one in aqueous Cu(Cys)₂, and also in Cu(His)(Cys) when the His glycinato or histaminato mode combines with the intact thiol group. Whereas the conformers with N and thiol S as the copper(II) donor atoms are predicted to be the least stable, those with the Cu-N and Cu-S(thiolate) bonding (and protonated carboxylato group) are the most stable. The differences are explained by different covalent and ionic contributions of Cu-S(thiol) vs. Cu-S(thiolate). The study can contribute to the insight into formation and reactivity of the copper(II) cysteinato complexes in solution.

Short Strong Hydrogen Bonds can Hinder Complex Formation: A Stability and Structure Study of Copper(II) Alkyl-N-iminodiacetic Acid Complexes in Aqueous Systems and Solid State

In the present study the solution and coordination chemistry of copper(II)–alkyl-N-iminodiacetate systems are studied in aqueous solution by potentiometry, using ion selective copper and pH electrodes, EXAFS (extended X-ray absorption fine structure) and dye probe molecular absorption spectrophotometry. Alkyl-N-iminodiacetates with varying alkyl chain length, methyl (CH3–), n-hexyl (C6H13–), n-dodecyl (C12H25–) and n-octadecyl (C18H37–) were used to tune the amphiphilic properties of the ligands. The polar head groups have both oxygen (hard Lewis base) and nitrogen donor (border-line Lewis base) atoms. This means that metal ions with different bonding characteristics may bind these ligands differently. Furthermore, the chelating properties of the polar head group may be regulated by pH as the acid–base properties of the imine and carboxylic acid groups are different. Copper(II) forms two stable complexes with alkyl-N-iminodiacetates with short alkyl chains, present as monomers in aqueous solution, log10β1 = 11.10(2), log10β2 = 19.5(2) for methyl-N-iminodiacetate, and log10β1 = 12.22(4), log10β2 = 21.9(2) for n-hexyl-N-iminodiacetate. n-Octadecyl-N-iminodiacetic acid, present as large aggregates in acidic aqueous solution, has short strong hydrogen bonds between carboxylic acid and carboxylate groups in the surface of the aggregates, which hinder complex formation at pH values below 4, obstructs it in the pH region 4–7, while the complex formation behaves as for short-chained alkyl-N-iminodiacetates at pH > 7. The structure around copper in copper(II)–alkyl-N-iminodiacetate complexes in aqueous solution and solid state formed at different pH values and copper(II):alkyl-N-iminodiacetate ratios has been determined by EXAFS. The coordination chemistry of copper(II) shows four strong bonds in the equatorial plane, and two different Cu–O/N bond distances, ca. 0.2 Å apart, in the axial positions of a non-centrosymmetric tetragonally elongated octahedron.

The temperature during sulfur poisoning affects the relation between total sulfur content and the fraction of sulfur-free copper in poisoned and regenerated Cu-SSZ-13 catalysts.
