Structural and Lattice-Dynamical Properties of Tb2O3 under Compression: A Comparative Study with Rare Earth and Related Sesquioxides

Tailored (La0.2Pr0.2Nd0.2Tb0.2Dy0.2)2Ce2O7 as a Highly Active and Stable Nanocatalyst for the Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Designing highly active and robust catalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction is key to improving the overall efficiency of the water splitting reaction. It has been previously demonstrated that evaporation induced self-assembly (EISA) can be used to synthesize highly porous and high surface area cerate-based fluorite nanocatalysts, and that substitution of Ce with 50% rare earth (RE) cations significantly improves electrocatalyst activity. Herein, the defect structure of the best performing nanocatalyst in the series are further explored, Nd2Ce2O7, with a combination of neutron diffraction and neutron pair distribution function analysis. It is found that Nd3 + cation substitution for Ce in the CeO2 fluorite lattice introduces higher levels of oxygen Frenkel defects and induces a partially reduced RE1.5Ce1.5O5 + x phase with oxygen vacancy ordering. Significantly, it is demonstrated that the concentration of oxygen Frenkel defects and improved electrocatalytic activity can be further enhanced by increasing the compositional complexity (number of RE cations involved) in the substitution. The resulting novel compositionally-complex fluorite- (La0.2Pr0.2Nd0.2Tb0.2Dy0.2)2Ce2O7 is shown to display a low OER overpotential of 210 mV at a current density of 10 mAcm-2 in 1M KOH, and excellent cycling stability. It is suggested that increasing the compositional complexity of fluorite nanocatalysts expands the ability to tailor catalyst design.

Tb- and Eu-doped yttrium oxyselenides as novel absorber layers for superstrate thin-film photovoltaics: improved spectral optical absorption and green-red phosphor activation

To generate and deliver alternative sustainable energy in the face of the current energy crisis, new materials that can capture solar energy and transform it into other useful energies are required. Rare-earth (RE) oxychalcogenides are now being used more frequently as up/down-conversion materials in established photovoltaic (PV) devices to boost their PV performance. Here, through an efficient microwave assisted synthesis procedure, novel nanoplate/sheet shaped nanomaterials of yttrium oxyselenide (YOSe) and its analogues doped with Tb and Eu (YOSe:Tb and YOSe:Eu) were successfully synthesized. Analyses of the structure, stability, morphology, light absorption, and electrochemistry were performed. This work showed that the parent YOSe exhibited green (543 nm) and red (615 nm) emission luminescence when doped with Tb and Eu with a luminescence quantum yield (LQY) of 0.56 and 0.53 for YOSe:Tb and YOSe:Eu nanomaterials, respectively. The surface and material conductivity of YOSe improved with the addition of the dopant elements, with the best outcome shown in YOSe:Eu, according to electrokinetic research evidenced by the enhanced current peaks, reduced charge-transfer resistance (Rct) and low impedance magnitude (Zmag) through electrochemical experiments. These improvements were induced by the distinctive properties of the dopant elements. PCEs of 0.25%, 0.67%, and 1.20% were obtained for YOSe, YOSe:Tb, and YOSe:Eu-based PV devices, respectively, using the nanomaterials as novel absorber layers in a superstrate device design. Our results can initiate further exploitation of the doped host structure for effective down-conversion NIR luminescence for applications in PV devices and to boost the PV performance of existing solar cells.

Layered Sol-Gel Deposition of a Sn, Ti, Zn, and Pr Mixed Oxide Thin Film with Electrical Properties for Gas Sensing

This article presents a layered mixed oxide thin film composed of Sn, Ti, Zn, and Pr obtained by sol-gel deposition for gas sensing applications. The film was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Raman spectroscopy, UV-Vis spectroscopy, Scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDX), and Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). X-ray diffraction results showed the presence of a single crystalline phase with a cassiterite-like structure. Raman spectroscopy revealed characteristic bands of oxygen-deficient SnO2-based nanocrystallites. The band gap energy calculated from UV-Vis spectroscopy is Eg = 3.83 eV. The XPS proved the presence on the surface of all elements introduced by the inorganic precursors as well as their oxidation states. Thus, Sn4+, Ti4+, Zn2+, and Pr3+ were detected on the surface. Moreover, by XPS, we highlighted the presence of OH groups and water adsorbed on the surface. SEM showed the five-layer morphology of the film after five successive depositions. Electrochemical properties were determined by EIS-impedance spectroscopy. The selectivity for gas sensing was also investigated for methane, propane, and formaldehyde and the gas sensing mechanism was explained. The results indicated that the mixed oxide thin film exhibited high sensitivity and selectivity towards specific gases.

Laser Ablation Synthesis and Characterization of Tb2O3 Nanoparticles for Magneto-Optical Ceramics

In this study, nano-sized individual Tb2O3 particles synthesized by the laser ablation method were extensively characterized and assessed as suitable precursors for the fabrication of transparent magneto-optical ceramics without requiring the introduction of grain growth inhibitors and stabilizing additives. The as-produced powder comprised 13 nm particles with a spherical shape and monoclinic crystal structure, whose full transformation into cubic phase was achieved after heating at 950 °C and 700 °C under vacuum and Ar gas, respectively. After subjecting the nanopowder compact to pre-sintering at 1350 °C, the microstructural features were investigated along with their correlation to the optical transmittance of Tb2O3 ceramic hot isostatically pressed (HIPed) for 2 h at 1450 °C under 200 MPa. The as-HIPed sample had a brownish color, with an optical transmittance of 65.3% at a wavelength of 1060 nm and an average grain size of 14 μm. The Verdet constant measured at wavelengths of 633 nm and 1060 nm was 471 rad T−1 m−1 and 142 rad T−1 m−1 to confirm a very high content of magneto-active Tb3+ ions. The obtained results indicate that laser ablation synthesis of nanoparticles followed by pre-sintering and HIP is a promising approach for the manufacture of magneto-optical Tb2O3 ceramics without specific sintering aids.

The special case of the spectral emission of a Tb3+ mono metal complex

The fine structure in the spectral lines of the visible fluorescence of Tb 3+  complexes are replaced by a single peak in the case of a singular molecular complex Tb(H 3 PTC) 3  , where H 4 PTC represents perylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylic acid, and its emission wavelength depends on the film thickness. This single peak challenges the old creed that the f-orbital electrons of Tb 3+  are always protected from the influence of the surrounding atoms. We perform density functional theory calculations to show that the wavefunction of the ground state is localized and in addition, spin-polarized, and this facilitates fluorescent transitions under UV to the first excited state instead of the fundamental state. We discuss the possibility of making a spintronic device with the molecule, Tb(H 3 PTC) 3  .

Combined Experimental and Theoretical Studies: Lattice-Dynamical Studies at High Pressures with the Help of Ab Initio Calculations

Lattice dynamics studies are important for the proper characterization of materials, since these studies provide information on the structure and chemistry of materials via their vibrational properties. These studies are complementary to structural characterization, usually by means of electron, neutron, or X-ray diffraction measurements. In particular, Raman scattering and infrared absorption measurements are very powerful, and are the most common and easy techniques to obtain information on the vibrational modes at the Brillouin zone center. Unfortunately, many materials, like most minerals, cannot be obtained in a single crystal form, and one cannot play with the different scattering geometries in order to make a complete characterization of the Raman scattering tensor of the material. For this reason, the vibrational properties of many materials, some of them known for millennia, are poorly known even under room conditions. In this paper, we show that, although it seems contradictory, the combination of experimental and theoretical studies, like Raman scattering experiments conducted at high pressure and ab initio calculations, is of great help to obtain information on the vibrational properties of materials at different pressures, including at room pressure. The present paper does not include new experimental or computational results. Its focus is on stressing the importance of combined experimental and computational approaches to understand materials properties. For this purpose, we show examples of materials already studied in different fields, including some hot topic areas such as phase change materials, thermoelectric materials, topological insulators, and new subjects as metavalent bonding.

Synthesis of Ilmenite-type ε-Mn2O3 and Its Properties

In contrast to the corundum-type A₂X₃ structure, which has only one crystallographic site available for trivalent cations (e.g., in hematite), the closely related ABX₃ ilmenite-type structure comprises two different octahedrally coordinated positions that are usually filled with differently charged ions (e.g., in Fe²⁺Ti⁴⁺O₃ ilmenite). Here, we report a synthesis of the first binary ilmenite-type compound fabricated from a simple transition-metal oxide (Mn₂O₃) at high-pressure high-temperature (HP-HT) conditions. We experimentally established that, at normal conditions, the ilmenite-type Mn²⁺Mn⁴⁺O₃ (ε-Mn₂O₃) is an n-type semiconductor with an indirect narrow band gap of E_g = 0.55 eV. Comparative investigations of the electronic properties of ε-Mn₂O₃ and previously discovered quadruple perovskite ζ-Mn₂O₃ phase were performed using X-ray absorption near edge spectroscopy. Magnetic susceptibility measurements reveal an antiferromagnetic ordering in ε-Mn₂O₃ below 210 K. The synthesis of ε-Mn₂O₃ indicates that HP-HT conditions can induce a charge disproportionation in simple transition-metal oxides A₂O₃, and potentially various mixed-valence polymorphs of these oxides, for example, with ilmenite-type, LiNbO₃-type, perovskite-type, and other structures, could be stabilized at HP-HT conditions.

Lattice Dynamics and Structural Phase Transitions in Eu2O3

Using the density functional theory, we study the structural and lattice dynamical properties of europium sesquioxide (Eu₂O₃) in the cubic, trigonal, and monoclinic phases. The obtained lattice parameters and energies of the Raman modes show a good agreement with the available experimental data. The Eu-partial phonon density of states calculated for the cubic structure is compared with the nuclear inelastic scattering data obtained from a 20 nm thick Eu₂O₃ film deposited on a YSZ substrate. A small shift of the experimental spectrum to higher energies results from a compressive strain induced by the substrate. On the basis of lattice and phonon properties, we analyze the mechanisms of structural transitions between different phases of Eu₂O₃.

The phase transitions of rare-earth sesquioxide Eu₂O₃ are very complicated. Analyzing dynamical properties of this compound for experimentally observed C-, A-, and B-type phases and extracting key symmetry elements common for these phases, we describe transition mechanisms and their sequence. Our DFT first-principles predictions are supported by the nuclear inelastic scattering measurements.

A Comparative Study on Luminescence Properties of Y2O3: Pr3+ Nanocrystals Prepared by Different Synthesis Methods

Pr³⁺-doped Y₂O₃ nanocrystals (NCs) have been obtained via five wet-chemistry synthesis methods which were optimized in order to achieve superior optical properties. To this end, a systematic study on the influence of different reaction parameters was performed for each procedure. Specifically, precursor concentration, reaction temperature, calcination temperature, and time, among others, were analyzed. The synthesized Y₂O₃: Pr³⁺ NCs were characterized by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and reflectance and Raman spectroscopy. In addition, the optical properties of such NCs were investigated by excitation, emission, and luminescence decay measurements. Concretely, emission from the ¹D₂ level was detected in all samples, while emission from ³P_J was absent. Finally, the effect of the synthesis methods and the reaction conditions on the luminescence decay has been discussed, and a comparative study of the different methods using the fluorescence lifetime of so-obtained Y₂O₃: Pr³⁺ NCs as a figure of merit has been carried out.
