Lanthanide-Titanium Oxo Clusters as the Luminescence Sensor for Nitrobenzene Detection

Utilizing excited-state proton transfer fluorescence quenching mechanism, layered rare earth hydroxides enable ultra-sensitive detection of nitroaromatic

Convenient, rapid, and accurate detection of nitroaromatic organic toxins and harmful substances is of great significance in research. In the present study, two-dimensional layered rare-earth hydroxides (LYH) were used as ion-exchange matrix materials, and the anionic fluorescent dye molecules (HPTS) were successfully introduced into the LYH structures in situ via a simple and effective "plug-and-play" strategy, which gave the compounds ultra-sensitive fluorescence sensing detection of nitrobenzene, p-nitrotoluene and p-nitrophenol (Fluorescence response time < 1 sec, and the LOD for nitrobenzene, p-nitrophenol and p-nitrotoluene reached an impressive 349 ppb, 22 ppb and 98 ppb, respectively). Combined with theoretical calculations, we elucidated in detail the fluorescence quenching response mechanism of the LYH-HPTS towards nitroaromatic. Additionally, we also constructed fluorescent paper sensor, which effectively transformed the LYH-HPTS from theoretical detection to device application. The LYH-HPTS material is not only simple to synthesize, cost-effective and stable, but also has the features of fast response, excellent sensitivity and selectivity, and good reproducibility, which provides a new approach for the rapid and accurate detection of nitroaromatic.

A porous and photoactive Ti-MOF based on a novel tetranuclear [Ti2Tb2] cluster

A robust and porous titanium metal-organic framework (Ti-MOF; LCU-505) has been solvothermally synthesized based on an unprecedented tetranuclear Ti2(μ3-O)2Tb2(μ2-CH3COO)2(H2O)4(OOC-)8 cluster (abbreviated as [Ti2Tb2]) and tritopic 4,4',4''-s-triazine-2,4,6-triyl-tribenzoic acid ligand (H3TATB). LCU-505 shows remarkable water stability and permanent porosity for N2 and CO2 gas adsorption. Moreover, LCU-505 demonstrates n-type semiconductor behavior and good photocatalytic activity in the degradation of organic dyes.

A facile strategy of using MoS2 quantum dots for fluorescence-based targeted detection of nitrobenzene

We present a simple approach for producing photoluminescent MoS₂ quantum dots (QDs) using commercial MoS₂ powder as a precursor along with NaOH and isopropanol. The synthesis method is particularly easy and environmentally friendly. The successful intercalation of Na⁺ ions into MoS₂ layers and subsequent oxidative cutting reaction leads to the formation of luminescent MoS₂ QDs. The present work, for the first time, shows the formation of MoS₂ QDs without any additional energy source. The as-synthesized MoS₂ QDs were characterized using microscopy and spectroscopy. The QDs have a few layer thicknesses and a narrow size distribution with an average diameter of ∼3.8 nm. Nitrobenzene (NB), an industrial chemical, is both toxic to human health and dangerously explosive. The present MoS₂ QDs can be used as an effective photoluminescent probe, and a new turn-off sensor for NB detection. The selective quenching was operated via multiple mechanisms; electron transfer between the nitro group and MoS₂ QDs through dynamic quenching and the primary inner filter effect (IFE). The quenching has a linear relationship with NB concentrations from 0.5 μM to 11 μM, with a calculated detection limit of 50 nM.

Circularly polarized luminescence and performance modulation of chiral europium-titanium (Eu2Ti4)-oxo clusters

The designed synthesis of chiral luminescent molecules with excellent circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) performance and high quantum yield (QY) levels has attracted great interest but remains very challenging. Herein, we report three pairs of chiral europium-titanium-oxo clusters featuring both modest CPL characteristics and high QY levels (up to 79%), which can be regulated by switching between different ligand substituents.

Thiacalix[4]arene-Sandwiched Sandglass-like Ln9 Clusters (Ln = Tb and Eu): Insights into the Selective Luminescence Quenching Properties by p-Nitrobenzene Derivatives

Nonanuclear lanthanide clusters Ln₉ (Ln = Tb and Eu) based on p-tert-butylthiacalix[4]arene (H₄TC4A) have been synthesized by the solvothermal reaction and were structurally determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The framework of Ln₉ can be termed as a sandglass-like structure whose two Ln₄-TC4A polynuclear secondary building units are bridged by one octa-coordinate {Ln(μ₃-O)₈} unit. Efficient TC4A-to-Ln energy transfer was observed for Tb₉ but not for Eu₉. The luminescence quantum yield (QY) of Tb₉ in the solid state at room temperature was determined to be 17.6%, while its highest QY in a methanolic solution (2 × 10^-5 mol/L) is 59.2% upon excitation at 318 nm. The luminescence of Tb₉ was quenched selectively by derivatives of p-nitrobenzene, as demonstrated by the results of photoluminescence and UV-vis titration experiments and supported by density functional theory calculations. We believe that the interactions between the analyte molecules and the pocket of Tb₉ are primarily responsible for the observed quenching. As such, this work represents one of the few examples of utilizing structurally interesting lanthanide cluster complexes as a sensory platform for the recognition of meaningful analytes and portends the further development of lanthanide-calixarene-complex-based functional materials.

Bifunctional Temperature and Oxygen Dual Probe Based on Anthracene and Europium Complex Luminescence

In this work, we synthesized a polydimethylsiloxane membrane containing two emitter groups chemically attached to the membrane structure. For this, we attached the anthracene group and the [Eu(bzac)₃] complex as blue and red emitters, respectively, in the matrix via hydrosilylation reactions. The synthesized membrane can be used as a bifunctional temperature and oxygen ratiometric optical probe by analyzing the effects that temperature changes and oxygen levels produce on the ratio of anthracene and europium(III) emission components. As a temperature probe, the system is operational in the 203-323 K range, with an observed maximum relative sensitivity of 2.06% K^-1 at 290 K and temperature uncertainties below 0.1 K over all the operational range. As an oxygen probe, we evaluated the ratiometric response at 25, 30, 35, and 40 °C. These results show an interesting approach to obtaining bifunctional ratiometric optical probes and also suggest the presence of an anthracene → europium(III) energy transfer, even though there is no chemical bonding between species.

Photoluminescence of Lanthanide-Titanium-Oxo Clusters and Based on a β-Diketone Ligand

A series of acetylacetone-protected lanthanide-titanium-oxo clusters (LTOCs), formulated as [La₆Ti(μ₃-OH)₈(acac)₁₂(CH₃O)₂(CH₃OH)₆] (La₆Ti; Hacac = acetylacetone) and [Ln₉Ti₂(μ₄-O)(μ₃-OH)₁₄(acac)₁₇(CH₃O)₂(CH₃OH)₃] [Ln = Eu (Eu₉Ti₂) and Tb (Tb₉Ti₂)], were synthesized through the reactions of LnCl₃·6H₂O (Ln = La, Eu, and Tb), Hacac, Ti(OⁱPr)₄, and triethylamine in methanol. Crystal structural analysis shows that La₆Ti exhibits an hourglass-like structure consisting of two La₃Ti cubane subunits by sharing one Ti⁴⁺ ion, while Eu₉Ti₂ can be viewed as a combination of four Eu₃Ti cubane subunits by sharing three corners and one side. The photoluminescence (PL) measurements show that Tb₉Ti₂ exhibits excellent PL properties with a high quantum yield (QY) of 34.8%, while Eu₉Ti₂ only has a QY of 1.4% because of the different photosensitizations of ligands to Eu³⁺ and Tb³⁺ ions in the photophysical process.

Asymmetric Activation of the Nitro Group over a Ag/Graphene Heterointerface to Boost Highly Selective Electrocatalytic Reduction of Nitrobenzene

The electrocatalytic reduction of nitrobenzene to aniline normally faces high overpotential and poor selectivity because of its six-electron redox nature. Herein, a Ag nanoparticles/laser-induced-graphene (LIG) heterointerface was fabricated on polyimide films and employed as an electrode material for an efficient nitrobenzene reduction reaction (NBRR) via a one-step laser direct writing technology. The first-principles calculations reveal that Ag/LIG shows the lowest activation barriers for the NBRR, which could be attributed to the optimum adsorption of the H atom realized by the appropriate interaction between Ag/LIG heterointerfaces and nitrobenzene. As a result, the overpotential of the NBRR is reduced by 217 mV after silver loading, and Ag/LIG shows a high aniline selectivity of 93%. Furthermore, an electrochemical reduction of nitrobenzene in tandem with an electrochemical oxidative polymerization of aniline was designed to serve as an alternative method to remove nitrobenzene from the aqueous solution. This strategy highlights the significance of heterointerfaces for efficient electrocatalysts, which may stimulate the development of novel electrocatalysts to boost the electrocatalytic activity.

Cd (II) coordination polymer as a strip based fluorescence sensor for sensing Fe3+ ions in aqueous system

The design and construction of a sensor that can sensitively and conveniently recognize metal ions are essential for the treatment of industrial wastewater. In this work, {[Cd₄(HL)₂(pyp)₂(H₂O)₂]·2H₂O·1.5Diox}_n (1) was synthesized under solvothermal condition and presented a 2D 3,5-connected layered network with the point symbol of {3.4.5} {3².4.5.6².7⁴}, which was coated on the surface of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) to construct a novel paper sensor (1@PVDF). Meanwhile, the stability of 1@PVDF was characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). In addition, fluorescence sensing experiments of 1@PVDF sensor for cations in aqueous system indicated that it has high sensitivity for sensing Fe³⁺ ions with the detection limit (DL) of 4.0 × 10^-8 M. By the characterization of PXRD, UV-vis spectra, ICP, XPS, time-resolved excited-state decay measurements, the sensing mechanisms of 1@PVDF for Fe³⁺ ions were attributed to the competitive absorption and interaction between 1 and Fe³⁺. And the sensing process of 1@PVDF for Fe³⁺ ions was static in the Fe³⁺ concentration of 0 to 0.05 mM. In addition, the binding energies of Fe³⁺ and Zn²⁺ with the framework of 1 were calculated by density functional theory (DFT), which further proved that there was an obvious interaction between Fe³⁺ and the uncoordinated O atom in 1. Based on the thin film technology, a portable and convenient paper-based probe has been developed for practical applications.

Syntheses, structures, and luminescence properties of five new coordination polymers based on 3-carboxy-1-(3′-carboxybenzyl)-2-oxidopyridinium and neutral ligands

Five CPs have been synthesized by a new semi-rigid dicarboxyl ligand and neutral ligands under hydrothermal conditions, and their luminescent sensing experiments for different small molecules/ions were studied in detail.

Ratiometric detection of p-nitrophenol and its derivatives using a dual-emissive neuron cell-like carbonized probe based on a ππ stacking quenching mechanism

p-Nitrophenol and its derivatives can cause serious harm to the health of mankind and the earth's ecosystem. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a novel and rapid detection technology for p-nitrophenol and its derivative. Herein, excellent water-soluble, large-size and dual-emissive neuron cell-analogous carbon-based probes (NCNPs) have been prepared via a solvothermal approach, using o-phenylenediamine as the only precursor, which exhibit two distinctive fluorescence (FL) peaks at 420 and 555 nm under 345 nm excitation. The NCNPs show a neuron cell-like branched structure, are cross-connected, and are in the range of 10-20 nm in skeleton diameter. Interestingly, their blue-green dual-colour fluorescence is quenched by p-nitrophenol or its derivative due to the specific mechanism of the ππ stacking interactions or internal filtration effect. Accordingly, a simple, rapid, direct and free-label ratiometric FL detection of p-nitrophenol is proposed. An excellent linear relationship shows linear regions over the range of 0.1-50 μM between the ratio of the FL intensity (FL555 nm/FL420 nm) and the concentrations of p-nitrophenol. The detection limit is as low as 43 nM (3σ). Importantly, the NCNP-based probe also shows acceptable repeatability and reproducibility for the detection of p-nitrophenol and its derivatives, and the recovery results for p-nitrophenol in real wastewater samples are favourable.

Visual Detection of Triethylamine and a Dual Input/Output Logic Gate Based on a Eu3+-Complex

A series of Ln³⁺-metal centered complexes, Ln(TTA)₃(DPPI) (Ln = La, 1; Ln = Eu, 2; Ln = Tb, 3; or Ln = Gd, 4) [(DPPI = N-(4-(1H-imidazo [4,5-f][1,10]phenanthrolin-2-yl)phenyl)-N-phenylbenzenamine) and (TTA = 2-Thenoyltrifluoroacetone)] have been synthesized and characterized. Among which, the Eu³⁺-complex shows efficient purity red luminescence in dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) solution, with a Commission International De L’ Eclairage (CIE) coordinate at x = 0.638, y = 0.323 and Φ_Eu^L = 38.9%. Interestingly, increasing the amounts of triethylamine (TEA) in the solution regulates the energy transfer between the ligand and the Eu³⁺-metal center, which further leads to the luminescence color changing from red to white, and then bluish-green depending on the different excitation wavelengths. Based on this, we have designed the IMPLICATION logic gate for TEA recognition by applying the amounts of TEA and the excitation wavelengths as the dual input signal, which makes this Eu³⁺-complex a promising candidate for TEA-sensing optical sensors.

Three Silver(I) Coordination Polymers Based on Pyridyl Ligands and Auxiliary Carboxylic Ligands: Luminescence and Efficient Sensing Properties

Easily producible sensors for harmful industrial waste compounds are of significant interest for both human health and the environment. Three novel coordination polymers, [Ag(μ-aca)(μ₄-bztpy)_1/2] (1), [Ag(μ-bza)(μ-bpa)] (2), and [Ag₂(μ-aca)₂(μ-bpa)₂]·EtOH·2H₂O (3), were assembled in this study by reactions using Ag⁺ as a node with the pyridyl ligand 1,2,4,5-tetrakis(4-pyridyl)benzene (bztpy) or 9,10-bis(4-pyridyl)anthracene (bpa) and an auxiliary chelating carboxylic ligand. Single-crystal X-ray structural analyses revealed that compound 1 has a 3D framework consisting of 1D [Ag(aca)]_∞ chains and bztpy linkers, while 2 and 3 have 2D layered structures consisting of binuclear Ag-carboxylate units and bpa linkers, respectively. Topological studies revealed that 1 has a bbf topology, while 2 and 3 are 2D [4,4] rhombic grids. The compounds were further characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, IR, elemental analysis, thermogravimetric analysis, and a luminescence study. The solids of 1-3 exhibited intense photoluminescent emission with λ_em^max at ca. 493, 472, and 500 nm, respectively. Remarkably, due to their excellent framework stability, 1 and 2 can act as multiresponsive luminescent sensors for nitrobenzene, Fe³⁺, and Cr₂O₇^2- with a high selectivity and sensitivity ascribed to their quenching effect.

Synthesis, Structural, and Physicochemical Characterization of a Ti6 and a Unique Type of Zr6 Oxo Clusters Bearing an Electron-Rich Unsymmetrical {OON} Catecholate/Oxime Ligand and Exhibiting Metalloaromaticity

The chelating catechol/oxime ligand 2,3-dihydroxybenzaldehyde oxime (H₃dihybo) has been used to synthesize one titanium(IV) and two zirconium(IV) compounds that have been characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and ¹H and ¹³C NMR, solid-state UV-vis, and ESI-MS spectroscopy. The reaction of TiCl₄ with H₃dihybo and KOH in methanol, at ambient temperature, yielded the hexanuclear titanium(IV) compound K₂[Ti^IV₆(μ₃-O)₂(μ-O)₃(OCH₃)₄(CH₃OH)₂(μ-Hdihybo)₆]·CH₃OH (1), while the reaction of ZrCl₄ with H₃dihybo and either ⁿBu₄NOH or KOH also gave the hexanuclear zirconium(IV) compounds 2 and 3, respectively. Compounds 1-3 have the same structural motif [M^IV₆(μ₃-Ο)₂(μ-Ο)₃] (M = Ti, Zr), which constitutes a unique example with a trigonal-prismatic arrangement of the six zirconium atoms, in marked contrast to the octahedral arrangement of the six zirconium atoms in all the Zr₆ clusters reported thus far, and a unique Zr₆ core structure. Multinuclear NMR solution measurements in methanol and water proved that the hexanuclear clusters 1 and 3 retain their integrity. The marriage of the catechol moiety with the oxime group in the ligand H₃dihybo proved to be quite efficient in substantially reducing the band gaps of TiO₂ and ZrO₂ to 1.48 and 2.34 eV for the titanium and zirconium compounds 1 and 3, respectively. The application of 1 and 3 in photocurrent responses was investigated. ESI-MS measurements of the clusters 1 and 3 revealed the existence of the hexanuclear metal core and also the initial formation of trinuclear M₃ (M = Ti, Zr) building blocks prior to their self-assembly into the hexanuclear M₆ (M = Ti, Zr) species. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations of the NICS_zz scan curves of these systems revealed that the triangular M₃ (M = Ti, Zr) metallic ring cores exhibit pronounced metalloaromaticity. The latter depends upon the nature of the metallic center with NICS_zz(1) values equal to -30 and -42 ppm for the Ti (compound 1) and Zr (compound 2) systems, respectively, comparable to the NICS_zz(1) value of the benzene ring of -29.7 ppm calculated at the same level of theory.
