Assembly of Two Mesoporous Anionic Metal–Organic Frameworks for Fluorescent Sensing of Metal Ions and Organic Dyes Separation

Composite Eu@Cd-CP as a fluorescent probe for the detection of some food additives

A transition metal coordination polymer (CP), [Cd(Hdpcp)]n (Cd-CP) was prepared based on 3-(2,4-dicarboxyphenyl)-6-carboxypyridine ligand (H3dpcp), and then its composite Eu@Cd-CP was synthesized by the post-modification through loading Eu3+ ions on Cd-CP. Eu@Cd-CP has outstanding fluorescence stability in aqueous solution with a wide range of pH. Furthermore, Eu@Cd-CP can distinguish sodium salicylate (SS) and sodium dehydroacetate (SA) in some food additives by quenching the characteristic fluorescence of Eu3+ ion. Eu@Cd-CP is the first known CP-based fluorescent probe for selective detection of SS and SA. In addition, the fluorescence mechanisms of discerning above analytes by Eu@Cd-CP have been thoroughly evaluated. It has found that synergistic effect of the dynamic process, photoinduced electron transfer (PET) process, energy absorption competition, and formation of Eu-O bonding interactions in sensing SA lead to the fluorescence quenching of Eu@Cd-CP. The fluorescence response mechanism of Eu@Cd-CP with SA is ascribed to the combination of the dynamic process, PET process, and energy absorption competition. A series of portable devices based on Eu@Cd-CP including fluorescence test strips, lamp beads, and composite films were developed to discern SS and SA via visual changes in luminescence color. This composite material can be potentially used as a multifunctional fluorescent probe for practical applications.

An Anionic Porous Indium-Organic Framework with Nitrogen-Rich Linker for Efficient and Selective Removal of Trace Cationic Dyes

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with porosity and functional adjustability have great potential for the removal of organic dyes in the wastewater. Herein, an anionic porous metal-organic framework (MOFs) [Me₂NH₂]₂In₂[(TATAB)₄(DMF)₄]·(DMF)₄(H₂O)₄ (HDU-1) was synthesized, which is constructed from a [In(OOC)₄]^- cluster and a nitrogen-rich linker H₃TATAB (4,4',4″-s-triazine-1,3,5-triyltri-p-aminobenzoic acid). The negatively charged [In(OOC)₄]^- cluster and uncoordinated -COOH on the linker result in one unit cell of HDU-1 having 8 negative sites. The zeta potential of -20.8 mV dispersed in pure water also shows that HDU-1 possesses negatively charged surface potential. The high electronegativity, water stability, and porosity of HDU-1 can facilitate the ion-exchange and Coulombic interaction. As expected, the HDU-1 exhibits high selectivity and removal rates towards trace cationic dyes with suitable size, such as methylene blue (MB) (96%), Brilliant green (BG) (99.3%), and Victoria blue B (VB) (93.6%).

A functional cobalt-organic framework constructed by triphenylamine tricarboxylate: Detect nitroaromatics by fluorescence sensing and UV-shielding

Luminescent metal-organic frameworks (LMOF) with ligand-modified are a promising strategy to be applied to fabricate chemical sensors. Herein, a novel Co (II) metal-organic framework (Co-MOF), namely Co [(NTB) bpy] (NTB = 4,4'4″-tricarboxylic acid triphenylamine, bpy = 4,4 '-bipyridyl), was successfully synthesized with excellent water stability and fluorescence properties. Due to the propeller structure of NTB ligands, a special topological structure of Co-MOF was shown: {2⁴.4¹⁶.6⁸}{2}4. It was proved that Co-MOF has great stability by soaking in different solvents for two weeks. Remarkably, the fluorescence quenching experiment verified that Co-MOF has excellent fluorescence sensor performance. Trinitrophenol, 2,4-dinitrophenol, and 2-amino-4-nitrotoluene (10^-5 M) with LOD of 9.00 × 10^-5, 5.40 × 10^-5 and 5.07 × 10^-6 M can be detected via the process of fluorescence enhancement and quenching. Throughout the investigation, the mechanics of fluorescence quenching was performed. Due to the excellent UV absorption capacity of Co-MOF, it was a promising application to combine low-dimensional nanomaterials with sustainable biomass materials. A hybrid films of Co-MOF and cellulose acetate (CA) was generated. The hybrid films had highly transparency in the visible wavelength range and excellent UV-shielding ability owing to the CA/Co-MOF hybrid films enhanced the UV absorption capacity of Co-MOF.

Construction of Cu(I)-Organic Frameworks with Effective Sorption Behavior for Iodine and Congo Red

The assembly of a tetradentate pyridine-derived ligand with CuX has afforded two isostructural Cu(I)-organic frameworks [Cu₂X₂(TBD)·DMF]_n (X = Cl for 1 and Br for 2) in this work. Structural analysis indicates that the compounds feature hybrid layered architectures, and the three-dimensional supramolecular frameworks are finally fabricated through the alternative stacking of adjacent layers wherein large open channels are simultaneously constructed. The chemical stability has been studied showing the excellent skeleton maintenance of the prepared solids in various solvents and even in water. Moreover, the iodine and dye sorption performance for compound 1 has been further tested. The Cu(I)-based metal-organic framework exhibits outstanding sorption and separation abilities on the targeted species, which could be considered as a promising adsorbent with high efficiency and selectivity.

A new three-dimensional zinc(II) metal-organic framework as a fluorescence sensor for sensing the biomarker 3-nitrotyrosine

3-Nitrotyrosine (3-NT), an oxidative stress biomarker, is closely associated with various diseases. Thus, rapid and sensitive detection of 3-NT is of great significance for preventing and treating diseases. Herein, we reported a new 3D zinc-based metal-organic framework (Zn-MOF) [Zn(L)(HBTC)] (L = (E)-4,4'-(ethene-1,2-diyl)bis[(N-pyridin-3-yl)benzamide], H₃BTC = 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid), which was structurally characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction, IR, PXRD and TG. The Zn-MOF can be used as a highly efficient fluorescence sensing material to provide a direct and low-cost method for the rapid detection of 3-NT and shows high sensitivity with a K_SV value of 6.596 × 10⁴ M^-1, a rapid luminescence response within 24 s, excellent selectivity, high anti-interference ability and good recyclability. It is the first example of a MOF being used to directly detect 3-NT as a luminescence sensor to our knowledge. The sensing mechanism of the Zn-MOF towards 3-NT is discussed in detail, which provides a basis for the rational design of MOF sensing materials and their application in biomarker detection.

Stable Zinc(II) Coordination Polymer as a Rapid and Highly Sensitive Fluorescence Sensor for the Discriminative Sensing of Biomarker 2-(2-Methoxyethoxy) Acetic Acid

A novel two-dimensional bilayer Zn-based luminescent coordination polymer (LCP) [Zn₂(μ₂-OH)(4-dptp)(3,4',5-bpt)] (LCP 1) [4-dptp = N³,N⁴-bis(pyridin-4-ylmethyl)thiophene-3,4-dicarboxamide and 3,4',5-H₃bpt = biphenyl-3,4',5-tricarboxylic acid] was successfully prepared under hydrothermal conditions and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, IR spectroscopy, powder X-ray diffraction, and luminescence spectroscopy. LCP 1 displayed excellent fluorescence-quenching efficiency toward a biomarker 2-(2-methoxyethoxy) acetic acid (MEAA) with a high K_sv (5.153 × 104 M^-1), a low limit of detection (0.244 μM), and a rapid response time (28 s). Additionally, LCP 1 can repeatedly detect MEAA at least eight times with excellent stability. The sensing mechanism was also carefully investigated through UV-vis absorption spectroscopy, density functional theory calculations, and fluorescence lifetime analysis.

A New Mn(II) Complex: Magnetic Property and Application Values in Foot and Ankle Arthritis

The solvothermal reactions of C3-symmerical 4,4 ${}^{\prime }$ ,4 ${}^{\prime }$ -nitrilotribenzoic acid and MnCl2 afforded a novel Mn(II) compound, and its formula is [Mn3(TCA)2(e-urea)2(DMA)2]n·n(urea)·n(DMA) (1, H3TCA=4,4 ${}^{\prime }$ ,4 ${}^{\prime }$ -nitrilotribenzoic acid, e-urea=2-imidazaolidone, DMA=N,N ${}^{\prime }$ -dimethylacetamide). Magnetic property investigation of 1 indicates weak antiferromagnetic mutual effects exist between neighboring Mn(II) ions. Serial biological tests were adopted to discover new compound activity. Firstly, the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was conducted to measure the content of inflammatory cytokines released into the synovial fluid. In addition, we also studied adenosine 5 ${}^{\prime }$ -monophosphate- (AMP-) activated protein kinase (AMPK) inflammatory signaling pathway activation through real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR).

Subtle Ligand Spacer Change in 2D Metal-Organic Framework Sheets for Dual Turn-On/Turn-Off Sensing of Acetylacetone and Turn-On Sensing of Water in Organic Solvents

Metal-organic framework (MOF)-based sensors for the detection of various analyte molecules has been a subject of absolute importance. However, most of these sensors rely on the turn-off (quenching) transduction response, while those reporting turn-on response are very rare. In this article, we have synthesized two new MOF-based sensors, {[Zn₂(oxdz)₂(tpbn)]·14H₂O}_n (1) and {[Zn₂(oxdz)₂(tpxn)]·10H₂O·2C₂H₅OH}_n (2), via the self-assembly of Zn(II) metal ions, a fluorogenic oxdz^2- linker, and bis(tridentate) ligands (tpbn and tpxn) under ambient conditions. Their formation from such a self-assembly process has been evaluated on the basis of the geometry around the five-coordinated Zn(II), preferential meridional binding of the bis(tridentate) ligands, and diverse binding of the carboxylate groups in oxdz^2-. Although 1 and 2 are isostructural, a difference in the transduction mechanism for the sensing of acetylacetone in organic solvents (turn-on for 1 and turn-off for 2) is observed and can be attributed to the spacer in the bis(tridentate) ligands. We have demonstrated the competing effect of the nonradiative interactions and photoinduced electron transfer toward the sensing mechanism. The results are well-supported by the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy study, intensity versus concentration plots, spectral overlap measurements, time-resolved fluorescence studies, and MM2 and density functional theory calculations. Furthermore, we have showcased the utilization of 1 for the sensing of trace amounts of water in organic solvents.

Two bis-ligand-coordinated Zn(ii)-MOFs for luminescent sensing of ions, antibiotics and pesticides in aqueous solutions

Two organometallic complexes with two and three-dimensional architectures were constructed by using multiple ligands and Zn(ii) ions: [Zn₃(BTC)₂(DTP)₄(H₂O)₂]·(H₂O)₄ (Zn-1) (BTC = benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylic acid and DTP = 3,5-di(1,2,4-triazol-1-yl)pyridine) and [Zn₂(NTD)₂(DTP)] (Zn-2) (NTD = 1,4-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid). The as-prepared complexes were characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD), elemental analysis, powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and fluorescence analysis. Fluorescence sensing tests revealed that the two complexes are effective, sensitive and selective toward cationic Fe³⁺ and anionic MnO₄ ^- and Cr₂O₇ ^2-. During the antibiotic sensing process, cefixime (CFX) for Zn-1 and nitrofurantoin (NFT) for Zn-2 exhibited the highest quenching efficiencies. For sensing pesticides, the highest quenching efficiencies were exhibited by imidacloprid (IMI) toward Zn-1 and Zn-2. The fluorescence quenching of the complexes that was induced by antibiotics, pesticides and MnO₄ ^- was attributed to both the inner filter effect (IFE) and the fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) effect.

A hydrostable CuII coordination network prepared hydrothermally as a "turn-on" fluorescent sensor for S2- and a selective adsorbent for methylene blue

The effective monitoring of water pollution and further purification are pressing yet challenging issues for guaranteeing the health of human beings and the stabilization of ecological systems. For this purpose, the development of efficient sensing and adsorption materials as a result of supramolecular interactions, including coordination and H-bonding etc., have been attracting increasing attention. With the aid of a coordination-driven self-assembly strategy, a new nonporous 2D CuII coordination network, [Cu2L(H2O)2]n (donated as CuCP), based on H4L, where H4L = 4-(4-(3,5-di-carboxy-pyridin-4-yl)phenyl)pyridine-2,6-dicarboxylic acid, was afforded hydrothermally. Structural analysis indicated that CuCP featured a wrinkled network similar to the ancient Chinese folding screens and constructed by the fully deprotonated ligand L4- with the coordination mode of bis(μ2-η1:η1:η2) and penta-coordinated Cu2+, which could be further upgraded to a supramolecular 3D framework as a result of the synergism of multiple C-H⋯O hydrogen bonds. The hydrostability of CuCP could be maintained within a wide pH range from 2 to 12 as verified by PXRD determination, endowing it with potential environmental applications. Thanks to the combination of the soft Lewis acidity of Cu2+ and its large conjugated structure, CuCP could be used as a turn-on fluorescence sensor for S2- and exhibited a different fluorescence response when Na2S, (NH4)2S or H2S were incorporated, even in actual water samples. The sensing mechanisms were disclosed in detail by the combination of experiments and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Furthermore, CuCP was shown to be a selective and recoverable adsorbent with a maximum adsorption capacity of 379 mg g-1 in 60 minutes for methylene blue (MB). The adsorption mechanism could be a combination of π⋯π stacking, n⋯π interaction, aggregation effects and Soft and Hard Acid-Base theory (HSAB). The results presented herein open up new perspectives for CuII species in environmental applications.

Facile fabrication and luminescence properties of a new ZnII coordination polymer-based fluorescent sensor toward antibiotics

A new ZnII-based coordination polymer could selectively and sensitively recognize NFT and DCN via turn-off effect. Interestingly, a mixed matrix film for visualizable sensing has been successfully developed.

Three new POM-based coordination polymers with 1,3,5-tris(1-imidazolyl)benzene ligand: syntheses, structures and proton conductivity

Three POM-based coordination polymers with 1,3,5-tris(1-imidazolyl)benzene have been synthesized. 1 exhibits a rare 3,6-connected pyr topology; 2 and 3 reveal 3D hydrogen-bonded structures with good proton conductivity.

A New (3, 6)-Connected Heterometallic Coordination Polymer: Therapeutic and Protective Effect on Ischemic Cerebral Infarction

Solvothermal reaction of 4,4’,4’-nitrilotribenzoic acid (H3TCA) with Ca(NO3)2·4H2O and Cd(NO3)2·4H2O successfully afforded a heterometallic compound, that is, [Cd2Ca(TCA)2(DMA)2(H2O)3]n·2n(DMA) (1, DMA = N,N’-dimethylacetamide). The structure of 1 was further characterized through EA, diffraction of single crystal X-ray, and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) together with powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD). Moreover, complex 1’s luminescent performance in solid state was also discussed at environmental temperature. The applications on the ischemic cerebral infarction therapy were evaluated, and the specific mechanism was investigated at the same time. Firstly, the hypersensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) content in human brain microvascular endothelial cell (HBMEC) was measured with real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). Then, interleukin-18 and interleukin-1β content released through the HBMEC was detected with enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA).

Multifunctional Zn-Ln (Ln = Eu and Tb) heterometallic metal-organic frameworks with highly efficient I2 capture, dye adsorption, luminescence sensing and white-light emission

A new family of isostructural 3d-4f heterometallic metal-organic frameworks (HMOFs), [Zn₃Eu_xTb_2-x(TZI)₄(DMA)₅(H₂O)₃]·4DMA [x = 0 (1), 0.3 (2), 0.6 (3), 0.9 (4), 1 (5), 1.2 (6), 1.5 (7), 1.8 (8), 2 (9)], has been synthesized using the 5-(4-(tetrazol-5-yl) phenyl)isophthalic acid (H₃TZI) ligand, Ln^III ions and Zn^II ions under solvothermal conditions. All HMOFs exhibit a (3,3,4,5,5)-connected 6³·6³(4²·6²·8²)(4·6⁵·8)(4·6⁶·8³) topology, which features three different types of motifs: one is a mononuclear Zn^II ion and the other two motifs are binuclear [Zn(COO)₃Ln] clusters. The adsorption experiments indicate that Zn₃Tb₂ (1) could efficiently remove almost all I₂ from cyclohexane solution after 12 h and also showed better adsorption towards neutral red (NR) dye (adsorption: only the Zn₃Tb₂ (1) was taken as one representative). Simultaneously, the luminescence sensing showed that Zn₃Tb₂ (1) and Zn₃Eu₂ (9) have excellent response and sensitivity towards pollutants such as Fe³⁺ ions and 2,4,6-trinitrophenol (TNP) with high selectivity and a fairly low limit of detection through luminescence quenching effect. Moreover, seven trimetallic-doped HMOFs 2-8 analogues of Zn₃Ln₂ (single) HMOFs were designed and prepared, showing different changes of luminescent color. More interestingly, Zn₃Eu_1.5Tb_0.5 (7) with white-light emission was fabricated by doping relative concentrations of Eu³⁺ and Tb³⁺ ions. To the best of our knowledge, Zn₃Eu_1.5Tb_0.5 (7) represents a novel kind of heterometallic Zn₃Ln₂ HMOFs with white-light emission. It could be deduced that the excellent characteristics, namely strong typical luminescence emission of Zn^II and Ln^III ions, microporous channels, active open metal sites (tetra-coordinated Zn^II-metal sites), and uncoordinated carboxylate O atoms and uncoordinated tetrazolate N atoms, made the above HMOFs an ideal platform for adsorption, luminescence sensing, and white-light emission. More significantly, these HMOFs are the first reported Zn-Ln heterometallic materials with the H₃TZI ligand.

Angle-Dependent Polarized Emission and Photoelectron Performance of Dye-Encapsulated Metal-Organic Framework

Molecule-based crystalline materials with angle-dependent polarized emission have attracted considerable attention owing to their extensive applications in displays and anticounterfeiting. Herein, one anionic metal-organic framework (MOF) {[Zn_2.5(μ₃-OH)(NDC)₂(HNDC)](HPIM)}_n was constructed on the basis of an excellent photoactive ligand naphthalene-1,4-dicarboxylic acid (H₂NDC). The protonated 2-propylimidazole (HPIM) guests residing in the nanochannels of MOF can be exchanged by a D-π-A cationic dye. The resulted host-guest system shows a rare example of ratiometric fluorescent polarizations and highly enhanced photoelectron performance in comparison with the pristine MOF.

Mixed Solvothermal Synthesis of Tn Cluster-Based Indium and Gallium Sulfides Using Versatile Ammonia or Amine Structure-Directing Agents

Metal chalcogenide supertetrahedral Tn clusters are of current interest for their unique compositions and structures, which rely highly on the structure-directing agents. Herein, we report four novel Tn cluster-based indium and gallium sulfides, namely, [NH(CH₃)₃]₄In₄S₁₀H₄ (1), (NH₃)₄Ga₄S₆ (2), [NH₃CH₂CH₃]₅(NH₂CH₂CH₃)₂Ga₁₁S₁₉ (3), and [NH₃CH₂CH₂OH]₆Ga₁₀S₁₈·2NH₂CH₂CH₂OH (4). All four compounds were solvothermally synthesized in mixed amine-ethanol solutions or deep eutectic solvent (DES), where ammonia/amine molecules play significant structure-directing roles in the speciation and crystal growth. (1) Being protonated, the trimethylamine and ethanolamine molecules surround the T2-[In₄S₁₀H₄]^4- clusters (for 1) and [Ga₁₀S₁₈]_n^6n- open framework (for 4), respectively, compensating for the negative charge of the inorganic moieties. (2) With the lone pair of electrons, the ammonia molecules in 2 coordinate directly to corner Ga³⁺ ions of the {Ga₄S₆} cage to give a neutral T2-(NH₃)₄Ga₄S₆ cluster. (3) For compound 3, part of the ethylamine molecules act as terminating ligands for the T1 and T3 units in the [Ga₁₁S₁₉(NH₂CH₂CH₃)₂]_n^5n- layer, while the rest act as interlamellar countercations upon protonation. Theoretical studies reveal the contributions of N, C, and H to the density of states (DOS) for 2 and 3 because of their hybrid structures that combine the ammonia/amine ligands with sulfide moieties together.
