A Photoluminescent Cd(II) Coordination Polymer with Potential Active Sites Exhibiting Multiresponsive Fluorescence Sensing for Trace Amounts of NACs and Fe3+ and Al3+ Ions

Synthesis of Cu and Zr-based coordination polymers with N/O donors and investigation of their photocatalytic activity against dye

The coordination polymers (CPs) of Cu and Zr were synthesized by the hydrothermal method. The orotic acid potassium salt (H3KL) was used as a linker, which coordinates via O-O. Whereas, 4,4'-trimethylenedipyridine (4,4'-TMDP) was used as a bifunctional monomer, which coordinates via N-N. The synthesized CPs were characterized by FTIR, P-XRD, TGA, DSC and SEM. The photocatalytic activity was investigated against methylene blue (MB) under sunlight irradiation. Both Cu-CP and Zr-CP exhibited potential activity for the degradation of MB, which was 72 % for Cu-CP and 93 % for Zr-CP. The band gap of the CPs was also investigated, and the observed value was 2.2 eV. The band gap indicates that these compounds could bring breakthroughs as photocatalysts instead of semiconductors. These kinds of CPs could be used for multiple purposes in industry and in a green environment.

Cu(II)-based complex loaded with drug paclitaxel hydrogels against thyroid cancer and optimizing novel derivatives

This study introduces a novel approach for synthesizing a Cu(II)-based coordination polymer (CP), {[Cu(L)(4,4´-OBA)]·H2O}n (1), using a mixed ligand method. The CP was successfully prepared by reacting Cu(NO3)2·3H2O with the ligand 3,6-bis(benzimidazol-1-yl)pyridazine in the presence of 4,4´-H2OBA, demonstrating an innovative synthesis strategy. Furthermore, a novel hydrogel composed of hyaluronic acid (HA) and carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS) with a porous structure was developed for drug delivery purposes. This hydrogel facilitates the encapsulation of CP1, and enables the loading of paclitaxel onto the composite to form HA/CMCS-CP1@paclitaxel. In vitro cell experiments demonstrated the promising modulation of thyroid cancer biomarker genes S100A6 and ARID1A by HA/CMCS-CP1@paclitaxel. Finally, reinforcement learning simulations were employed to optimize novel metal-organic frameworks, underscoring the innovative contributions of this study.

Terbium alginate encapsulated CsPbI3@Pb-MOF: a ratiometric fluorescent bead for detection and adsorption of Fe3

Halide perovskite nanocrystals are innovative luminescent materials for fluorescent probes with high quantum yield and narrow emission bandwidth. However, the limited stability, single-signal response, and separation challenges obstruct their widespread use in water ion detection. Herein, a ratiometric fluorescence sensor based on terbium alginate gel beads (green fluorescent, namely Tb-AG) embedded with powdered CsPbI3@Pb-MOF (red fluorescent) was prepared for fluorescent determination and adsorption of Fe3+. Pb-MOF's protection notably enhances the water stability of CsPbI3, while the energy transfer between CsPbI3@Pb-MOF and Tb3+ elevates the optical performance of CsPbI3@Pb-MOF@Tb-AG. Significantly, Fe3+ markedly suppresses CsPbI3@Pb-MOF red fluorescence at 647 nm, while not noticeably affecting Tb-AG green emission at 528 nm. The sensor exhibited a strong linear response to Fe3+ concentrations ranging from 0 to 90 μM, with a detection limit of 0.44 μM and high selectivity. The CsPbI3@Pb-MOF@Tb-AG-based sensor has been effectively validated through its successful use in detecting Fe3+ in tap and river water samples. Furthermore, CsPbI3@Pb-MOF@Tb-AG demonstrates a notable adsorption capacity of 325.4 mg g-1 Fe3+. Finally, the mechanism of Fe3+ detection and adsorption was determined.

In Situ Conversion of Ligand to a Coordination Polymer via a Core@Shell Crystal: A Multi-Step Phase-Dependent Structural Transformation

Two pseudopolymorphic 1D coordination polymers of the formulas [Cd(3,3'-pytz)(CH3OH)2(ClO4)2]n (1) and [Cd(3,3'-pytz)(CH3CN)2(ClO4)2]n (2) have been prepared using the electron-deficient 3,6-bis(pyridin-3-yl)-1,2,4,5-tetrazine (3,3'-pytz) ligand and cadmium perchlorate in the chloroform/methanol and chloroform/acetonitrile solvent system, respectively. It was observed that compounds 1 and 2 experienced one-step (CPreagent → CPproduct) single-crystal-to-powder structural transformation to the pure water-coordinated compound [Cd(3,3'-pytz)(H2O)2(ClO4)2]n (3) by absorbing water vapor from air (solid-gas phase transformation). Interestingly, compounds 1, 2, and 3 undergo a different transformation path and show an in situ unique three-step (CPreagent → CPproduct → Ligandintermediate → CPproduct) single-crystal-to-single-crystal (SCSC) structural transformation process through soaking in deionized water (solid-liquid phase transformation). In this fascinating transformation, we report for the first time the direct conversion of a ligand into a coordination polymer by a rare core-shell pathway in a solid-liquid phase transformation. In this process, we obtained compound {[Cd(3,3'-pytz)(H2O)4](3,3'-pytz)2(ClO4)2(H2O)6}n (4) (single-crystal = S, crystal = C, or microcrystal = P) as mixed compounds of core-shell L@4C and 4S or core-shell L@4P and 4P for compounds (1 and 2) and 3, respectively.

A summary of calixarene-based fluorescent sensors developed during the past five years

Calixarenes are "chalice like" phenol-based macrocycles that are one of the most fascinating studied scaffolds in supramolecular chemistry. Their preorganized nonpolar cavities and ion binding sites, and their well-defined conformations all lay important foundations for forming host-guest complexes. Conjugation of calixarene scaffolds with various fluorophores at either upper or lower rims has led to the development of smart fluorescent probes for inorganic molecules or ions, aliphatic or aromatic compounds, biomolecules, temperature and hypoxia, even multi-component traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). Moreover, significant advancements have been made for biological applications. This review critically summarizes the recent advances made in these areas.

pH-Stable Zn(II) Coordination Polymer as a Multiresponsive Turn-On and Turn-Off Fluorescent Sensor for Aqueous Medium Detection of Al(III) and Cr(VI) Oxo-Anions

Nowadays, coordination polymers (CPs) are promising candidates as sensory materials for their high sensitivity, improved selectivity, fast responsive nature, as well as good recyclability. However, poor chemical stability often makes their practical usage limited. Herein, employing a mixed ligand approach, we constructed a chemically robust CP, {[Zn2L2(DPA)2]·3H2O}n (IITKGP-70, IITKGP stands for the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur), which exhibited excellent framework robustness not only in water but also over a broad range of pH solutions (pH = 3-11). The developed framework displayed high selectivity and sensitivity for the detection of trivalent Al3+ ions and toxic hexavalent Cr(VI)-oxo anions in an aqueous medium. The developed framework exhibited an aqueous medium Al3+ turn-on phenomenon with a limit of detection (LOD) value of 1.29 μM, whereas a turn-off effect was observed for toxic oxo-anions (Cr2O72- and CrO42-) having LOD values of 0.27 and 0.71 μM, respectively. Both turn-on and turn-off mechanisms are speculated via spectroscopic methods coupled with several ex situ studies. Such a multiresponsive nature (both turn-on and turn-off) for aqueous medium detection of targeted cations and anions simultaneously in a single platform coupled with high robustness, ease of scalability, recyclability, and fast-responsive nature makes IITKGP-70 highly fascinating as a sensory material for real-world applications.

Zinc(II)-Based Ring-and-Rod Coordination Layer as an Excitation-Wavelength-dependent Dual-Emissive Chemosensor for Discriminating Fe3+, Cr3+, and Al3+ in Water

The reactions of Zn(NO3)2, 3,6-bis(pyridin-3-yl)-9H-carbazole (bpycz), and 2,5-dihydroxyterephthalic acid (H4dhbdc) or 2-bromoterephthalic acid (Br-1,4-H2bdc) under hydro(solvo)thermal conditions yielded corresponding coordination polymers (CPs) {[Zn(H2dhbdc)(bpycz)]•0.5H2O}n (1) and [Zn(Br-1,4-bdc)(bpycz)]•2DMAc•H2O (2), respectively, with high thermal stability approaching 350 °C. CP 1 adopts a ring-and-rod layer structure, which is topologically described as a 4-connected net with the point symbol of 2•65. Two layers are interpenetrated in parallel interlocking mode to form a double 2D → 2D polyrotaxane entanglement with extra-framework void space of 19.6%. CP 2 has a non-interpenetrating ring-and-rod layer structure of 4-connected 2•65 net topology, with extra-framework void space of 16.6%. Thermally activated 1 and 2 revealed CO2 uptakes of 101.1 and 98.6 cm3 g-1, respectively, at P/P0 = 1 and 195 K. X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) patterns confirmed that 1 and 2 both possessed high chemical stability in H2O, CH3OH, acetone, and DMF, and framework stability during gas adsorption-desorption. The H2O suspension of 1 displayed excitation-dependent dual-emissive properties, appearing at 432 nm upon excitation at 300 nm and at 528 nm upon excitation at 365 nm. Of note, 1 was capable of detection of Fe3+, Cr3+, and Al3+ ions in H2O, showing good anti-interference ability, excellent selectivity, and high sensitivity. More interesting, the dual-emissive properties make 1 to be an excellent luminescence chemosensor to screen Fe3+, Cr3+, and Al3+ from a pool of metal ions in H2O upon excitation at 300 nm via luminescence quenching effect and then discriminate Fe3+, Cr3+, and Al3+ upon excitation at 365 nm via luminescence quenching, unaltered, and enhancement responses, respectively. On the other hand, the H2O suspension of 2 demonstrated an excitation-independent emission appearing at around 430 nm, which could be utilized to sensitively detect Fe3+ and Cr3+ ions with good anti-interference ability and excellent selectivity via luminescence quenching effect. Further, 1 and 2 were recyclability and possessed cycling stability. The plausible sensing mechanisms for 1 and 2 toward Fe3+, Cr3+, and Al3+ were also explored in detail.

SCSC Transformation and Post-Synthesis Modification of MOFs with Proton Conduction and Ratiometric Fluorescence-Sensing Properties

The modification of metal-organic framework (MOF) materials to facilitate their practical applications is an extremely challenging and meaningful topic. In this work, two stepwise modification strategies for MOFs were conducted. First, we have demonstrated a single-crystal-to-single-crystal (SCSC) transformation from a microporous three-dimensional (3D) MOF to a two-dimensional (2D) coordination polymer (CP). The centrosymmetric [Cd(3-bpdb)(MeO-ip)]_n (1) transforms into a chiral [Cd₂(3-bpdb)(MeO-ip)₂(CH₃OH)₂]_n (2), which is triggered by the reaction time with methanol that acts as a structure-directing agent. The conversion relationship of 1 to 2 at different reaction times was studied in detail. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations clearly state that the irreversible formation of 2 is thermodynamically favorable. Intriguingly, 2 exhibits good proton conduction of 1.34 × 10^-3 S cm^-1 under 363 K and 98% relative humidity (RH) due to unique H-bond network characteristics. To the best of our knowledge, there are very few cases of 3D to 2D SCSC transformation stimulated by reaction time. The results have important implications for understanding the SCSC transformation mechanism and synthetic chemistry. On the other hand, the lanthanide³⁺-functionalized hybrids (Ln³⁺-MOF), Ln³⁺@1, were continuously prepared by incorporating luminescent Ln³⁺ ions into the structure of 1 through encapsulating post-synthesis modification (PSM). Tb³⁺@1 exhibits double emission in water and shows visual ratiometric fluorescence behavior for sensing glutamic acid (Glu), tryptophan (Trp), and Al³⁺, which is more reliable and accurate than single emission. Our work may not only provide new insights into the multiple modification of MOF materials but also promote the practical application of such materials.

Solvothermal synthesis and device fabrication of a Eu3+-based metal-organic framework as a turn-on and blue-shift fluorescence sensor toward Cr3+, Al3+ and Ga3

A novel three-dimensional Eu³⁺-based metal-organic framework with the formula {[(CH₃)₂NH₂][Eu(BTDI)]·H₂O·DMF}_n (JXUST-25) was prepared by solvothermal method based on Eu³⁺ and 5,5'-(benzothiadiazole-4,7-diyl)diisophthalic acid (H₄BTDI) with benzothiadiazole (BTD) luminescent groups. Due to the presence of Eu³⁺ and organic fluorescence ligand, JXUST-25 displays turn-on and blue-shift fluorescence toward Cr³⁺, Al³⁺ and Ga³⁺ with limits of detection (LOD) of 0.073, 0.006 and 0.030 ppm, respectively. Interestingly, the alkaline environment can change the fluorescence of JXUST-25 toward Cr³⁺/Al³⁺/Ga³⁺ and the addition of HCl solution realizes the reversible change of the fluorescence of JXUST-25 toward Cr³⁺/Al³⁺/Ga³⁺. It is noteworthy that the fluorescent test paper and light-emitting diode lamp based on JXUST-25 can effectively detect Cr³⁺, Al³⁺ and Ga³⁺ by the visual changes. In addition, the turn-on and blue-shift fluorescence between JXUST-25 and M³⁺ ions may be caused by the host-guest interaction and the absorbance caused enhancement mechanism.

Selective Low-Level Detection of a Perilous Nitroaromatic Compound Using Tailor-Made Cd(II)-Based Coordination Polymers: Study of Photophysical Properties and Effect of Functional Groups

Three coordination polymers (CPs 1-3) are prepared based on diverse electron-donating properties and coordination arrangements of conjugated ligands. Interestingly, this is also reflected in their photophysical properties. The distinguishable high emissive nature of the luminescent coordination polymer shows its potentiality toward the detection of the perilous substance 2,4,6-trinitrophenol (TNP) or picric acid (PA). TNP has a higher propensity among explosive nitroaromatic compounds (epNACs) due to its significant π···π interaction with the free benzene moieties present in the CPs. Among CPs 1-3, 2 exhibits the highest sensitivity and selectivity toward TNP because of the most favorable π-π stacking with the conjugated organic linker. The calculated limit of detection (LOD) and corresponding quenching constant (K_SV) from the Stern-Volmer (SV) plot for 1, 2, and 3 are found to be 0.68 μM and 7.49 × 10⁴ M^-1, 0.41 μM and 8.01 × 10⁴ M^-1, and 1.18 μM and 8.1 × 10⁴ M^-1, respectively. The fluorescence quenching mechanism is also highly influenced by their structure and coordination arrangement.

Luminescent Cd coordination polymer based on thiazole as a dual-responsive chemosensor for 4-nitroaniline and CrO42- in water

A novel highly fluorescent cadmium metal-organic framework, [Cd (DPTTZ) (OBA)] (IUST-3), synthesized by using two linkers 2, 5-di (pyridine-4-yl) thiazolo [5, 4-d] thiazole (DPTTZ) and 4, 4'-oxybis (benzoic acid) (OBA) simultaneously, which exhibits a two-dimensional framework. The characteristics of this Cd-MOF were investigated by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, elemental analysis, powder X-ray diffraction, and thermogravimetry analysis. The IUST-3 exhibits excellent luminescence property and good stability in water. Luminescent experiments indicate that the IUST-3 has remarkable sensitivity and selectivity for the detection of 4-nitroaniline (4-NA), and CrO₄^2- anion with K_SV = 1.03 × 10⁵ M^-1 (4-NA) and K_SV = 2.93 × 10⁴ M^-1 (CrO₄^2-) and low limit of detection 0.52 µM (4-NA) and 1.37 µM (CrO₄^2-). In addition, the possible fluorescence quenching mechanism was explored in this paper.

Metal-Organic Framework-Based Selective Molecular Recognition of Organic Amines and Fixation of CO2 into Cyclic Carbonates

Synthesis and structural depiction of two new metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), namely, [{Zn(L)(oba)}·4H₂O]_α (Zn-MOF-1) and [{Cd_1/2(L)_1/2(nipa)_1/2(H₂O)_1/2}·(DMF)_1/2(H₂O)]_α (Cd-MOF-2) (where L = N²,N⁶-di(pyridin-4-yl)naphthalene-2,6-dicarboxamide, 4,4'-H₂oba = 4,4'-oxybisbenzoic acid, and 5-H₂nipa = 5-nitroisophthalic acid) are reported. Both Zn-MOF-1 and Cd-MOF-2 have been prepared by reacting ligand L and coligand 4,4'-H₂oba or 5-H₂nipa with the respective dihydrates of Zn(OAc)₂ and Cd(OAc)₂ (OAc = acetate). Crystal structure X-ray analysis discloses that Zn-MOF-1 displays an overall 2D → 3D interpenetrated framework structure. The topological analysis by ToposPro suggests a (4)-connected uninodal sql topology with a point symbol of {4⁴·6²} having 2D + 2D parallel polycatenation. However, crystal packing of Cd-MOF-2 adapted a porous framework architecture and was topologically simplified as (3,4)-connected binodal 2D net. In addition, both Zn-MOF-1 and Cd-MOF-2 were proved to be multifunctional materials for the recognition of organic amines and in the fixation of CO₂ to cyclic carbonates. Remarkably, Zn-MOF-1 and Cd-MOF-2 showed very good fluorescence stability in aqueous media and have shown 98 and 97% quenching efficiencies, respectively, for 4-aminobenzoic acid (4-ABA), among all of the researched amines. The mechanistic study of organic amines recognition proposed that fluorescence quenching happened mainly through hydrogen-bonding and π-π stacking interactions. Additionally, cycloaddition of CO₂ to epoxide in the presence of Zn-MOF-1 and Cd-MOF-2 afforded up to 96% of cyclic carbonate within 24 h. Both Zn-MOF-1 and Cd-MOF-2 exhibited recyclability for up to five cycles without noticing an appreciable loss in their sensing or catalytic efficiency.

A Benzothiadiazole-Based Eu3+ Metal-Organic Framework as the Turn-On Luminescent Sensor toward Al3+ and Ga3+ with Potential Bioimaging Application

The design and preparation of novel multifunctional lanthanide metal-organic frameworks (Ln-MOFs) have been arisen widespread attention. In particular, Ln-MOFs have shown great luminescence potential in chemical sensing. Herein, a new benzothiadiazole-based Eu-MOF {[(CH₃)₂NH₂][Eu(BTDB)₂]·2H₂O}_n (JXUST-11) was obtained based on 4,4'-(benzo[c][1,2,5]thiadiazole-4,7-diyl)dibenzoic acid (H₂BTDB), which exhibits a chain-based three-dimensional framework. Moreover, JXUST-11 is considered as a photoluminescent sensor to identify Al³⁺ and Ga³⁺ ions by fluorescence enhancement with the detection limits of 2.9 and 10.2 ppm, severally. Importantly, Al³⁺ and Ga³⁺ can be discerned with the naked eye by color change under a natural lamp. In addition, a portable MOF film based on JXUST-11 was developed for Al³⁺ and Ga³⁺ detection. This is the first Ln-MOF that can be employed as a naked-eye fluorescent probe to identify Ga³⁺. Interestingly, JXUST-11 is also capable of detecting Al³⁺ and Ga³⁺ in living cells.

Coordination Polymers as a Functional Material for the Selective Molecular Recognition of Nitroaromatics and ipso-Hydroxylation of Arylboronic Acids

We report the synthesis and structural characterization of two coordination polymers (CPs), namely; [{Zn(L)(DMF)₄ } ⋅ 2BF₄ ]_α (1) and [{Cd(L)₂ (Cl)₂ } ⋅ 2H₂ O]_α (2) (where L=N² ,N⁶ -di(pyridin-4-yl)naphthalene-2,6-dicarboxamide). Crystal packing of 1 reveals the existence of channels running along the b- and c-axis filled by the ligated DMF and lattice anions, respectively. Whereas, crystal packing of 2 reveals that the metallacycles of each 1D chain are intercalating into the groove of adjacent metallacycles resulting in the stacking of 1D loop-chains to form a sheet-like architecture. In addition, both 1 and 2 were exploited as multifunctional materials for the detection of nitroaromatic compounds (NACs) as well as a catalyst in the ipso-hydroxylation of aryl/heteroarylboronic acids. Remarkably, 1 and 2 showed high fluorescence stability in an aqueous medium and displayed a maximum 88% and 97% quenching efficiency for 4-NPH, respectively among all the investigated NACs. The mechanistic investigation of NACs recognition suggested that the fluorescence quenching occurred via electron as well as energy transfer process. Furthermore, the ipso-hydroxylation of aryl/heteroarylboronic acids in presence of 1 and 2 gave up to 99% desired product yield within 15 min in our established protocol. In both cases, 1 and 2 are recyclable upto five cycles without any significant loss in their efficiency.

The Structure and Property of Two Different Metal-Organic Frameworks Based on N/O-Donor Mixed Ligands

Two different metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) [Cd2(AZN)(HAZN)(btc)(Hbtc)·4H2O]·2H2O (1), and [Zn3(AZN)2(btc)2·4H2O] (2) were synthesized by the reactions of different metal salts with mixed ligands of 1-(4-(1H-imidazol-5-yl)phenyl)-1H-1,2,4-triazole (AZN) and trimesic acid (H3btc). The different metal centers in the reaction condition have important impact on the resulting structures of MOFs 1 and 2. Compound 1 is a one-dimensional (1D) chain structure, while 2 features a three-dimensional (3D) framework with 3-fold interpenetration topology of Point (Schläfli) symbol of (6·82)4(62·82·102). Furthermore, the luminescent properties have been studied for MOFs 1 and 2.

Catalytic C-H Bond Activation and Knoevenagel Condensation Using Pyridine-2,3-Dicarboxylate-Based Metal-Organic Frameworks

Three 1D coordination polymers (CPs) [M(pdca)(H2O)2] n (M = Zn, Cd, and Co; 1-3), and a 3D coordination framework {[(CH3)2NH2][CuK(2,3-pdca)(pa)(NO3)2]} n (4) (2,3-pdca = pyridine-2,3-dicarboxylate and pa = picolinic acid), have been synthesized adopting a solvothermal reaction strategy. The CPs have been thoroughly characterized using various spectral techniques, that is, elemental analyses, FT-IR, TGA, DSC, UV/vis, and luminescence. Structural information on 1-4 was obtained by PXRD and X-ray single-crystal analyses, whereas morphological insights were attained through FESEM, AFM, EDX, HRTEM, and BET surface area analyses. Roughness parameters were calculated from AFM analysis, whereas dimensions of small domains and interplanar spacing were defined with the aid of HRTEM. CPs 1-3 are 1D isostructural networks, whereas 4 is a 3D framework. Moreover, 1-4 display moderate luminescence at rt. In addition, 1-4 have been applied as economic and efficient porous catalysts for the Knoevenagel condensation reaction and C-H bond activation under mild conditions with good yields (95-98 and 97-99%), respectively. Notably, 1-3 can be reused up to seven cycles, whereas 4 can be reused up to five catalytic cycles with retained catalytic efficiency. Relative catalytic efficacy toward the Knoevenagel condensation reaction follows in the order 2 > 1 > 3 > 4, whereas 2 > 4 > 1 > 3 for C-H activation. The present result demonstrates synthetic, structural, optical, morphological, and catalytic aspects of 1-4.

Polytorsional-amide/carboxylates-directed Cd(ii) coordination polymers exhibiting multi-functional sensing behaviors

By rational assembly of polytorsional-amide [N,N′-bis(4-methylenepyridin-4-yl)-1,4-naphthalene dicarboxamide (L)] and polytorsional-carboxylates [H₂ADI = adipic acid, H₂PIM = pimelic acid, H₂SUB = suberic acid], three new Cd-based coordination polymers (CPs) C₃₀H₃₀CdN₄O₇ (1), C₃₁H₃₂CdN₄O₇ (2) and C_31.03H_30.55CdCl_0.24N₄O_5.52 (3) were successfully synthesized. CPs 1–2 and 3 are 2D networks and a 3D framework, which all display 3,5-connected topologies with different structural details. The effects of carboxylates with different carbon chains on the structure of the complexes were studied. Fluorescence experiments show that CPs 1–3 have good multi-functional sensing ability for metal cations (Fe³⁺), anions (MnO₄⁻, CrO₄²⁻, Cr₂O₇²⁻) and organochlorine pesticides (2,6-dichloro-4-nitroamine) with good anti-interference and recyclable characteristics. The possible sensing mechanism is also investigated in detail.
